- 0:15And here we go the third and final hour at least for today of the
- 0:19Morning Show with Preston Scott. That is Grant Ellen. I am Preston.
- 0:23It is August thirty, first show number forty nine ninety eight. Show five
- 0:29thousand comes next Tuesday. But you know what we have between now and then
- 0:37F s U Football, Ladies and gentlemen. The twenty twenty three season kicks
- 0:43off on Sunday night. Sadly, it's going to be a Camping World Stadium
- 0:47in Orlando. What a detestable venue that is. But joining us to talk
- 0:52about the new season fits Hue Football is Ira Chaffel of war Chant dot Com.
- 0:57He's the managing editor. Ira. Hello, good morning. How are
- 1:00you president? I am great because I'm not going to Camping World Stadium.
- 1:06You, sir, are gonna have to go to Camping World Stadium. I
- 1:08can't stand that place. It's a it's not you wouldn't call it the Rose
- 1:15Bowl of the Southeast, not necessarily the most picturesque of college football stadium.
- 1:22You know, the stadium is fine. It's getting to the stadium, it's
- 1:26parking at the stadium, it's getting out of that stadium. It's awful.
- 1:33Yeah, it's not exactly big time. Why did we agree to Orlando and
- 1:37not just I mean, why not? Why not Tampa? Why not Jacksonville?
- 1:41Why not heck Miami. That's a great question, you know, to
- 1:45be honest with you, I know that the idea originally was ESPN. I
- 1:49think in LSU wanted to have a game in New Orleans. That was a
- 1:52big draw, and so then they were trying to find a location in Florida.
- 1:56They wanted to do outside a neutral site game. That's a good question.
- 1:59I thought a game in Tampa. The last time Floors they played in
- 2:01Tampa, I think I thought was awesome, and you know, I'd like
- 2:06to see them get back there. And I know they want to play elsewhere
- 2:07around the state besides just Tallassi in Miami. Orlando wouldn't be necessarily my top
- 2:13choice, but that's where we're at, all right. Even mother nature tried
- 2:17to stop us from going to Orlando yesterday, but I guess there's enough time
- 2:23to clear the roads. So ira the build up. Everybody knows that's an
- 2:27FSU fan. They've been waiting for it for a few years now. The
- 2:30return, I think a lot of us might be pleasantly surprised at how quickly
- 2:35Mike Norvell was able to cobble together a team that might actually compete for a
- 2:39conference title and maybe even a spot in the College Football Playoff. Are they
- 2:44living up to that based on your observations of practice, I think they are.
- 2:50I think it's been a really good camp, especially well, really both
- 2:53sides of the ball. I think the defense has been better than what we
- 2:57saw a year ago. I think there's a lot of potential for that group
- 2:59to be. I don't know that it's gonna be a dominant defense. There
- 3:02aren't really a lot of dominant defenses in college football anymore. But I think
- 3:06it's gonna be a good defense, and the offense has been Honestly, it
- 3:10looks like it could be spectacular. You know, Jordan Travis keeps getting better
- 3:15and better. You've got these skilled position players that they return, and Johnny
- 3:17Wilson and Tray Benson and some of those guys. But then you add in
- 3:21Kean Coleman who transferred in from Michigan State, Joheen Bell, who transferred in
- 3:24the tight end from South Carolina, and it's when you look at this offense,
- 3:29man, there's just weapons everywhere. Is it possible that? I mean,
- 3:34I go back to when Bobby Bowden first came to Florida State IRA,
- 3:38and I think about the fact that Bowden was a good coach. We knew
- 3:42that going in, but you wonder when you get the incredible talent, if
- 3:46you can rise to the level of your talent as a coach. How do
- 3:51you feel about Mike Norvell. He was a great coach before coming here,
- 3:53but this is the first time he's had this kind of talent on all sides
- 3:59of the ball. What are your thoughts about him rising to the level of
- 4:01the talent he's recruited. That's a question I had about him, to be
- 4:05honest with you, One of the big questions I had when he took the
- 4:10job and then after the first couple of years, is you know, would
- 4:13he be able to manage you know, this level of player. And it's
- 4:15not just from a Okay, you've got a better you've got a more talented
- 4:18player. But a lot of times when you're dealing with more talented players,
- 4:21guys who have been five star recruits and been stars their whole lives. Uh,
- 4:27you know, it's just different. You've got to manage those personalities.
- 4:29It's different coaching. You know, a guy like Derek Brooks even than than
- 4:33a guy that maybe Cush Bouton had it on his first teams, and so,
- 4:38you know, I was curious how Mike Norvell would handle that. I
- 4:41think what's worked out perfectly for him is he's been because he's been here for
- 4:45now two or three or four years. Those other players know what he's about,
- 4:49and they know what he's like, and he's had success. So now
- 4:53when when those higher ranked players have come in, they've adapted. You know,
- 4:57they have. Hiki Williams is a five star wide receiver they signed in
- 5:00this last class. That was the kind of guy I was curious how it
- 5:02would handle. And he has totally assimilated himself. He was not ready from
- 5:08day one in the spring when he came in, But now he looks like
- 5:11a completely different guy, looks like just like he operates just like these other
- 5:15other guys do. And I think that's given Norvella chance to kind of put
- 5:17his imprint on the program, and those other guys that have been here for
- 5:20two or three years really buy in, and that's made it easier for these
- 5:24new guys to adjust. It's the Morning Show with Preston Scott Florida State football.
- 5:35You can watch the game if you're not traveling in the course, you
- 5:39can listen on your iHeart radio stations to the broadcast. Joining me is Iras
- 5:45Chaffelaborchant dot Com. Ira. As you look at this edition of FSU football
- 5:51and the potential that it has, how is it that people are looking at
- 5:59LSU is being perhaps a better team than Florida State this year. And I'm
- 6:02not necessarily talking about the close call win last year, but when I watched
- 6:09LSU play the rest of the season, I don't see a team that should
- 6:13be five or better in the nation. There's a there's certainly a lot of
- 6:17Florida State fans who are asking that question, you know. To me,
- 6:21I just I just put a lot of it to the you know what,
- 6:25people first perspectives are on the SEC as a football conference, and I think
- 6:30wins in that conference, you know, and they got some nice wins in
- 6:32that conference last year, are just valued much more than wins in the conference
- 6:38like the a SEC. So while Florida State finished the year with six straight
- 6:41wins, you know, I think that they they're just not valued at the
- 6:45same level. And I think if you if you were going to look at
- 6:46Florida State and say, like, let's poke some holes in the resume,
- 6:50Well, you have that three game losing streak against probably the three const conference
- 6:55teams you played, and then you know, your wins late in the year
- 6:58were against the Florida in Oklahoma teams that were both about five hundred. So
- 7:01that so that diminished this Florida State a little bit. And then from an
- 7:04LSHO standpoint, you could point to, you know, they got blown out
- 7:08in some games late last year. They were not very consistent, but I
- 7:11think it's those wins they had that, for whatever reason, are just valued
- 7:15and higher. If you look at Florida State this year, what's better the
- 7:20offense or the defense? I think the offense is definitely better. I mean,
- 7:25I think this offense is gonna be one of the best offenses in college
- 7:28football. But the defense has held its own. And that's what I think
- 7:30should get Fishing fans a lot of excitement is that it's not like the offense
- 7:35goes up and down the field. The defense wins more than their share,
- 7:39will at least their share of battles in practice, and you know, I
- 7:42think that group's gonna be good. To look. They brought in, you
- 7:45know, Brandon Fisk on the defensive line is a force. They also brought
- 7:48in Fenseral Cyprus, a cornerback who was an All acc guy at Virginia,
- 7:54and then you have a ton of other guys back. So I just I
- 7:56think this defense is gonna be really good, but the offense is better.
- 7:59I think I still hold Bobby Bowden as the gold standard, not Jimbo Fisher
- 8:05because of longevity. One of the things that I think back on is that
- 8:09coach Bowden was very good at at giving backup quarterbacks the air apparent if you
- 8:16will time on the field before they would take over. Do you see that
- 8:20in Mike Norvelle Or is it important to keep Jordan Travis on the field as
- 8:26long as possible for the purposes of, you know, Jordan's possible Heisman Trophy
- 8:31candidacy. I don't think that that's going to factor into it too much,
- 8:37to be honest with you, because I don't know that Jordan in Florida State.
- 8:39You know, they've been doors Jordan Traviss the Heisman candidate that they created
- 8:43a little website, But I don't think that that's going to be a top
- 8:46priority because he's you know, he is so gifted that I don't think you're
- 8:50gonna want to take any chances with him. And on any play can turn
- 8:54into a from a pass play to now a running play because he's so athletic
- 8:58and now he might be in harm's way. So I think if they can
- 9:01get him out of games and get him on the sideline and put that baseball
- 9:05cap on, they're gonna do it. And if that happens, I think
- 9:07you're gonna see a lot of Tate Radamaker. And then what's also going to
- 9:11be interesting to see is do you get one of those other young quarterbacks on
- 9:15the field, and if you do, which one. Aj Duffy has been
- 9:18in the system now for two years. But Brock Glenn, who's a true
- 9:20freshman who you think you would like the red shirt, has really looked outstanding
- 9:24and I think some people would like to see what he looks like in mop
- 9:28up duty. So that's gonna be interesting to see when they go to those
- 9:31backups. Is it all Tate or does he give one of those younger guys
- 9:35for opportunities as well? FLA on your phone with the iHeart radio app and
- 9:39on hundreds of devices like Alexa, Google Home, Xbox, and Sonos.
- 9:43Heay. So here we go. Radio season it's our go to for Intel
- 9:54on FSU athletics. Definitely, football season is upon us and that's where we
- 10:00go. It's war chand dot Com Managing editor is Irah Chaffel recommend you to
- 10:05subscribe and get the details that you want on the Garnet and Gold Ira true
- 10:11or false, We're gonna know everything we need to know about this football team
- 10:16at the end of September. True. Yeah, I mean this game,
- 10:20I mean, this game is huge, But then you have Clemson at the
- 10:22end of the month. If Florida State, you know, is three and
- 10:26one at the end of this month, I think they're in great shape to
- 10:28make a run to maybe win the ACC and still get into the playoff.
- 10:33If they're two and two, man, it's just gonna be a tough year
- 10:35to see. It's gonna be interesting to see how this teamers were bounced from
- 10:39that four and oh. Obviously you're in great shape. So yeah, I
- 10:43think this month is going to be a huge for Flooria State. All right,
- 10:46let's say the four and oh. Because I'm an eternal optimist. Florida
- 10:48State goes four and oh in the month of September. Are they going to
- 10:52the College Football Playoff? I think they are. You know, I just
- 10:56think that, you know, you look at there's of the games remaining.
- 11:01Look, I don't think Florida is going to be very good this year.
- 11:03I'm not sure Miami is going to be very good this year. I think
- 11:07those are two games are gonna win. Pitt on the road is a little
- 11:09concerning well, especially late in the year. It could be a cold weather
- 11:13game. That game could be a little fluky. But I like Florida State
- 11:16And if they have a rematch with Clemson in the HC Championship game, I
- 11:20like them in that game too. So yeah, I think if they don't
- 11:24have some some unfortunate luck in this first month, I think they have a
- 11:28great chance to get there. For the fans that are going to be watching
- 11:31going to the games, we know the guys from last year that are back.
- 11:35It's it's an incredible roster on both sides of the ball of guys that
- 11:37turned down NFL money or the chance at NFL money to play another year in
- 11:43this system and to take a shot at at maybe some titles. Who are
- 11:46the newcomers era that are standing out to you that you expect are going to
- 11:52be difference makers that we should look for in the field. Well, I
- 11:56mean, I think there's three on offense and one or two on defense.
- 12:00And on offense, Number four Kian Coleman, a wide receiver, is elite.
- 12:03I mean he's he's not quite astallised Johnny Wilson, he's six foot four,
- 12:07but he's he's probably a more polished receiver. He's been outstanding. I
- 12:11think you're gonna see big plays out of him. And then the two tight
- 12:16ends they brought in Joheen Bell, who mentioned earlier from South Carolina number six,
- 12:18and then Kyle Morlock because they brought him from his Division two school,
- 12:22number eighty four. They're both harry. I think they're both big upgrades at
- 12:26tight end and defense. The guy to me is Brandon Fisk at number fifty
- 12:31five on defense the defensive line. He is relentless as a pass rusher.
- 12:35Just he's gonna be a guy. I think Florid State fans love to watch
- 12:39play because he plays all out on every play. Plus he's you know,
- 12:43six point four, six point five three hundred pounds and he can make a
- 12:46lot of plays. I'm just curious when when you talk about the defense and
- 12:54you look at a guy coming in who's an All Conference cornerback but changes school.
- 13:01Have we put the woes of our secondary kind of in the rearview mirror
- 13:03now? And I'm gonna ask the same question about the offensive line last couple
- 13:07of years greatly improved? Is that now in the rearview mirror a decade of
- 13:11difficulty at the old line? I definitely think so. You know, starting
- 13:16with the defensive backfield, not only did you bring in, like you said,
- 13:18Petrol Cypress, who was an All Conference player, but Bernardo Greene played
- 13:22really well last year at the other corner. And then you have several other
- 13:26dbs Kevin Knowles and Greed Events and some of those guys who played well last
- 13:31year. Plus you have a new defensive backs coach, Patrick Sartine, who
- 13:35is Patrick Surtain, who has been really I think a big boost for that
- 13:39defensive backfield. Absolutely. Now on the offensive line, there's no question.
- 13:43I mean, you brought in three more transfers this offseason and you return basically
- 13:46four starters. So now I mean they Mike Norvelle and Alex Adkins have both
- 13:52said they have eight offensive lineman that they know they can win with. They
- 13:54have eight guys who've started twenty or more college football games at various school rules,
- 14:00and uh, yeah, it's the deepest and best offensive line they've had
- 14:03in a long time. And uh and they've got a couple other guys that
- 14:05are that are good too, just haven't proven it yet. So yeah,
- 14:09the miseries on the offensive line I think are along in the past. Has
- 14:13Mike Norvelle and the staff found the secret sauce in the balance of bringing in
- 14:18transfers and recruiting freshmen, because it looks from the outside that they have I
- 14:24think. So, you know, he kind of got lucky with the portal
- 14:28because you know that the first year, I don't know that Mike Norvell would
- 14:31have jumped all into the portal the way he did unless he had to.
- 14:33You know, he had to change this roster. The ROSTERI inheritive was in
- 14:37really bad shape both in terms of talent but also just mentality and in chemistry.
- 14:45And so he went heavy in the portal, but had so much success
- 14:48early that now they've kind of become the destination program in the portal where you
- 14:52have all these players who put Florida State at the top of their list if
- 14:56they want to transfer, and they're getting to choose who they want. And
- 14:58then now with this last class and this class coming up, you're starting to
- 15:03see him have the success with the high school recruits. And now, I
- 15:05mean they've got multiple five star commitments. They've got three five star commitments that
- 15:11FLOORI State hasn't had that in a long time, and they might get one
- 15:13or two more. There's a chance they're gonna have one of the top five
- 15:16or six recruiting classes in the country. And again, that used to be
- 15:20the standard, but it hasn't been the standard here in quite a time.
- 15:22So they've turned it around. Okay, Ira, we're it's money time.
- 15:26Now. Who are you picking? What's your what's your score pick for Sunday
- 15:31Night. I do like Florida State in this game. I just I have
- 15:35a hard time believe in LSU. If LSU's defense Florid States offense under twenty
- 15:39eight or thirty points, then they may have an all time great defense.
- 15:43So I think flori State's gonna win the game. I'm gonna put it at
- 15:46about thirty eight to twenty seven. I think Florist State's gonna gonna be the
- 15:52story of the opening weekends. Yeah, I'm a pragmatic homer. I'm picking
- 15:56the knolls by seventeen and I don't think it's gonna be close. And I'm
- 16:00looking forward to talking with you when we get back after that first week,
- 16:03Ira, Thanks so much, safe travels to and from, Thanks pressing,
- 16:07Congratulations on show five thousand, when you get there,
