- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me covering one piece the
- 0:13live action Netflix series Season one, Episode one, Romance Dawn. In this
- 0:24episode, we're getting some of Loofy's origins, We're getting some of Roano's Oru's
- 0:29origins, We're getting some of Nami's origins, and very excitingly, we're getting
- 0:34our first glimpse of Buggy the Clown. Welcome to spoil Me. Welcome to
- 1:00the show everyone. I am Natasha. Thank you so much to Gabriella for
- 1:03commissioning this episode. Gabriella, I'm very very grateful to you for commissioning this
- 1:08show. I wanted to watch it so bad when it first came out,
- 1:12and I'm really grateful that I'm gonna be able to watch it and talk about
- 1:18it with everybody. And I'm really very interested to hear the opinions of UOG
- 1:26fans of this mini series and how it compares and how like, because you
- 1:32know, there are a lot of things that are done slightly differently and a
- 1:37lot of compressions of the overall story, but the spirit of it feels very
- 1:47much the same. It's just all been tightened up a lot, which is
- 1:51you know, really the main thing that one piece needs is tightening. So
- 1:59despite those changes and you know, the things that are necessary to alter for
- 2:04live action, a lot of things that are based on a particular existing,
- 2:09super popular property have like shots in them that are meant to be homages to
- 2:15specific moments, and I'm really just curious those of you who are super familiar
- 2:22either with the original episodes and like know them shot for shot, or with
- 2:25the manga, which I would guess if this was going to be paying homages
- 2:30it would be to manga panels specifically instead of like the show, the animated
- 2:35show. But also I am not entirely sure how much the animation from the
- 2:40show mimics what the manga panels have either, So you know, it's it's
- 2:46I'm just really curious for some side by side comparisons. And I'm sure that
- 2:53there are a bunch of like YouTube videos out there already doing that sort of
- 2:57like frame by frame analysis, But oh my god, I'm sorry. If
- 3:01you guys can hear that, I have Sam sitting beside me in an armchair
- 3:06during this recording, because today is his last day with me. Tomorrow,
- 3:10at two thirty I will be bringing him to his forever home, and I'm
- 3:16really glad for him and really excited, but I'm going to miss him so
- 3:20much. He's a big, sweet pie, and I just want to spend
- 3:23every second with him that I can so, and he's been really wanting a
- 3:27lot of affection today, so I decided to bring my armchair over and he's
- 3:30kind of resting his head on my desk a little bit. So I apologize
- 3:38if you hear some things, but there's a good likelihood that from today on
- 3:45I will rarely have a dog in my office again while I record, because
- 3:50I will only have Pip to take care of, and I don't think that
- 3:53he's going to want to be confined and hear that often. So anyway,
- 3:58that's what's going on. And if you hear some interruptions and weird noises,
- 4:02it's probably Sammy, so forgive me ahead of time. But anyway, all
- 4:06right, let's start this off, because you guys, I am so pleased
- 4:11with this first episode. I'm I don't recall. I assume that the way
- 4:16Netflix dropped it was the entire series at once. I could be wrong about
- 4:20that, because there are times where they'll release something one episode at a time,
- 4:26excuse me and others where they do you know, mostly they seem to
- 4:31do the like whole season drop and I have to imagine most people just binge
- 4:39this because it feels really, really bingeable. So let's start things off.
- 4:46I also want to mention, like, these episodes are about an hour long.
- 4:48This one was sixty four minutes, so it was really quite like in
- 4:56depth. It looks like a lot of the other episodes aren't as long,
- 5:00and it makes sense that they're setting the scene with a really long one.
- 5:03To me, that's a good move. So we start things off with a
- 5:12voiceover by Ian McShane. And I remember when Owen told me it was going
- 5:18to be Ian McShane doing the voiceover for this, how excited I got because
- 5:23that man is just so good. And yeah, he really brings something to
- 5:29this voiceover. It's very atmospheric, and the last line of it is you
- 5:38know that it was that it was becoming a land of pirates and he says
- 5:45it with this like growl in his voice, and it's really this man is
- 5:49really bringing it. I feel everybody seems to be giving one hundred percent,
- 5:56you know, everybody is hearts completely in it, which I really appreciate,
- 6:00because this is the sort of thing that if you don't come at it with
- 6:04the right attitude as an actor, if you feel silly about it, or
- 6:11you try and like dial it back, it's just going to seem wrong.
- 6:16The whole point of one piece is how over the top it is. You
- 6:20know, you need to be giving one hundred and ten. So I'm just
- 6:26seeing there's a comment from Florian that he left before I started. Can't be
- 6:30here today, but super excited to hear your thoughts, so I dropped this
- 6:32comment in advance. I'll try to be at the next one. I think
- 6:35they did a great job. And by the way, if you were worried
- 6:38about this, there are no spoilers for you in the live action for the
- 6:41anime. Yay. I wasn't worried. I figured if it had been commissioned,
- 6:45it was unlikely that there were spoilers to worry about. But I'm glad
- 6:47to have that confirmed. So we start off in Logtown twenty two years ago.
- 6:58And something else that I would be very interested in finding out is where
- 7:04they filmed a lot of these town shots. How many of these are straight
- 7:11up CGI? How many of them are actual towns? That have been altered
- 7:17a little bit to get rid of modern technology and whatnot, and how many
- 7:24of them are models things like that. I'm always really curious about that because
- 7:29Lowtown looks very much like a real place and it doesn't resemble in almost any
- 7:34way to me what it looked like in the show. But I really don't
- 7:39care. I want to be clear, like, that's not the sort of
- 7:42thing I'm going to be persnickety about. I am not a purist in that
- 7:46sense. So they, you know, you got to do what you've got
- 7:49to do. And I'm sure that the type of budget they were working with
- 7:54for this show did not lend itself to just like building an entire town set,
- 7:59you know. So there is this, uh, what seems to be
- 8:03sort of like a city hall, and it is That's the one that I
- 8:09think is cgi. Everything else looks real, and we have got the execution
- 8:15of gold d Roger, and y'all, this dude is eating this scenery up.
- 8:24It is a really interesting because, like when I first saw goldde Roger
- 8:31in the trailers, I was a little bit like, really because that dude
- 8:35did not to me seem to have that like lantern jaw sort of look,
- 8:43he's got a bit of a babyface, you know. And yet once I
- 8:48saw him in this scene and the swagger, I was convinced. I was
- 8:54like, okay, you know what, You've won me over again. And
- 8:56of course we're getting the execution at the top of that huge platform. It's
- 9:01all done really really close to the show, and I hadn't really put it
- 9:09together the way that this like how this worked out for the military here.
- 9:20But the point of what they were trying to do with this public execution of
- 9:24Goldie Roger, as he puts it in this scene, is they are trying
- 9:28to send a message to all pirates out there that it won't be tolerated.
- 9:35And yet the whole point of what Goldie Roger does is attempt to instigate even
- 9:46more piracy than they were performing before. So it's kind of delightful also knowing
- 9:56as we do now that spoilers for the show. By the way, those
- 10:00of you who are like, if there's anybody who has found this podcast and
- 10:05hasn't watched the One Piece animated series, I have been covering that for the
- 10:11past few years. I'm currently on episode I think four, like four forty
- 10:16something like that, So I'm gonna be referencing some spoilers from later on in
- 10:22the animated series, So if you don't want to get spoiled on that sort
- 10:24of thing, definitely wait until you've either watched up to the point that I'm
- 10:31at by now or read up on some of that stuff. But I just
- 10:35want to make it clear because I'm sure there are gonna be folks that are
- 10:37specifically searching like live action in the title and then come across my podcast and
- 10:43don't know. So those of you who haven't made it to the end and
- 10:50don't mind spoilers, gold d Roger had turned himself in, as it turns
- 10:56out, and you know, the world government attempted this parading of him to
- 11:05make it seem like they were really cracking down and you know, managing to
- 11:11have control, when in fact, this dude was dying already and was just
- 11:18like, I'm gonna go out with a bang. You know what I'm gonna
- 11:20fucking do. I'm gonna turn myself in and I'm gonna tell everybody about this
- 11:26shit I buried and they are going to go fucking bananas, and they do.
- 11:33He is correct. So this whole execution, the uh, there's somebody
- 11:43in the audience who yells pirate King, tell us where your treasure is and
- 11:48where you hit it? And it's not the person who says that line.
- 11:54But there is a guy out in the audience here in the crowd. I
- 12:01am trying to remember his name because he has those crazy sideburns. This man
- 12:07is Foign, by the way, and he looks so anime. I am
- 12:11loving this look. I cannot recall though he looks so familiar, like I
- 12:16can picture the animation in my head. I can't remember who this is,
- 12:20so if anybody wants to remind me of what character this is. But anyway,
- 12:24they ask where have you buried your treasure? And he starts laughing.
- 12:28He's got those fucking brown teeth. You want to know where my treasure is?
- 12:35And we have another like sweep of the camera over the whole crowd,
- 12:43zeroing in on some certain faces. In particular, there is a woman who
- 12:50has dark hair, dark skin, and this coppery lipstick and eye makeup and
- 12:58lots of gold jewelry, so cool. We see a very young Shanks and
- 13:05he has a much more mournful look than everybody else, which makes sense because
- 13:11you know, as it turns out, there's connection there, and he says,
- 13:18I found everything else the world has to offer. Free yourselves, take
- 13:24to the seas. My treasure is yours to find. And as he says
- 13:31this, he never says one piece. I just really want to point this
- 13:39out. It's a weird choice in light of the fact that Loofy later on
- 13:45uses the phrase one piece to describe this treasure over and over again. So
- 13:50I do think it's sort of weird that they didn't have him say it in
- 13:56his speech, because I know what it is Lufy's talking about. But I've
- 14:01got to be honest, I said this when I first started the show.
- 14:05One piece is a really, really weird term to begin with. You get
- 14:13used to it because the show goes on for so long using this term that
- 14:16you just accept it. But when you stop and think about, like the
- 14:20fact that gold Roger was supposed to have said, I left all of my
- 14:24treasure in one piece, that's a weird way to say that. So it
- 14:30feels like the show is sort of acknowledging that that's a weird thing to say
- 14:35by leaving it out of his speech. But they that's the name of the
- 14:39show, so they can't entirely leave it behind, and it is something that
- 14:41Lufy talks about enough that they decide they're not going to cut it from his
- 14:46dialogue. And I'm sort of like, look, either you keep it or
- 14:50you don't, Like I think if you have, if you've decided you're gonna
- 14:54have Lufy say it, you've got to keep it in his speech. So
- 14:58that's the only thing that I've finding really weird about the live action so far,
- 15:03is like you can't distance yourself from the thing and then like also try
- 15:07and hold on to the thing. That's not gonna work for me. I
- 15:13accept that it's just going to This is the probably only place that this is
- 15:20going to wind up being an issue, because when Lufy mentions the one piece
- 15:24later on to Kobe, Kobe knows what he's talking about. So I think
- 15:30we're all meant to accept that in the wider world, everybody refers to the
- 15:35treasure as the one piece. But I just really just I found it weird
- 15:39because I, you know, watching this speech again and I was watching the
- 15:46show the first time, thinking I swear he didn't actually say one piece,
- 15:50So Lufy's saying it and seeing it here, Yeah, exactly, he doesn't
- 15:52say it but yeah, the effect of his saying all of this, it's
- 15:58very clear how the craw is starting to react. So the man in charge
- 16:03his name, I'm forgetting just signals for the execution, and he is killed.
- 16:08But instead of everybody standing there somberly, they all just immediately begin to
- 16:15flee from the square in what's obviously a mad dash to get to their ships
- 16:22so that they can start the search. And this is when we go back
- 16:27to the narrator. His words change the world forever, A new age was
- 16:32born, the Great Pirate Era, setting off a race across the seas to
- 16:37find the Pirate King's hidden treasure. And he says the one piece, and
- 16:47I was just sort of like, okay, still sounds super weird, but
- 16:52I accept it. So that's the opening I don't feel like I quite grasped
- 16:59in then the animation when I watched that version of it, how this was
- 17:06supposed to be a suppression event for pirates and how Roger turned it completely on
- 17:14its head and used it to create a new Pirate era nightmare for the Marines.
- 17:19So I really liked this tightening up because I felt like, oh,
- 17:25I see he was really giving them the finger here, which I don't feel
- 17:29like I was quite grasping before. And I don't know if that's just me
- 17:32or there's a lot sort of when you're watching the animated series for the first
- 17:37time, it's very overwhelming. You know, there's a lot of strange character
- 17:41designs. There's turns of phrase, especially because I was watching the SUB.
- 17:44I've since switched to the dub, and I find that to be far superior
- 17:49in terms of conveying tone, especially jokes. But I was watching the sub
- 17:56to begin with, and I think that I was just struggling so much to
- 17:59like keep the overall plot together in my head and keep track of names and
- 18:04stuff that I wasn't able to let my brain relax enough to see the patterns.
- 18:11And this is solidifying some things for me in a way that I really
- 18:15appreciate. So then we go to East Blue present day, and we are
- 18:22with Loofy, who is wearing the straw hat and he is trying to shovel
- 18:30water out of this tiny, sad, little sailboat, and he is talking
- 18:36to someone about following his dream to find the one piece, and the way
- 18:41he looks at the camera, it feels like he's talking to us for just
- 18:45a second. But then it pulls back and it turns out that there is
- 18:51a seagull here, one of those like messengers seagulls listening to him, and
- 18:56I love that He's just it's one of the ones that has the the newspapers.
- 19:03I just love that gimmick, these fucking seabirds. But yeah, he
- 19:07says, so what do you say? And the bird just looks at him,
- 19:11tilts its head, and then flies away, and he says to himself,
- 19:17mutiny. And this was in the trailer, and I gotta admit that
- 19:22got a chuckle out of me in the trailer. Like I, I'm gonna
- 19:26talk about each actor individually as we go along, but we're gonna talk about
- 19:32Loufy first, and I want to look up the names of the actors.
- 19:37I'm a little afraid to do that, but I don't feel like it's you
- 19:41know, I am. How much can I really be spoiled for this?
- 19:48I'm guessing not that much. So I'm gonna IMDb the one piece live action
- 19:55and just see if I can pull that easily. And if it's too much
- 19:57of a you know, pain, I will just lay off. But I
- 20:02would like to give actual credit by name. Okay, so it looks like
- 20:07his name. Lufy's actor is in Yaki Godoy. I hope I'm saying that
- 20:11correctly. This kid is killing it what I love him. I can't get
- 20:26over the sheer sweetness that rolls off him. I feel like there is something
- 20:41about the loofy in the subs that missed for me so bad that when I
- 20:49accidentally watched with the dub and I was suddenly like, oh, I feel
- 20:53like I get Loufy a lot better now. I couldn't go back. And
- 21:00he feels like he's taking it one step further. There is a sunniness to
- 21:06him, and he's indefagotable, you know. I just completely unflagging in a
- 21:18way that doesn't feel silly or obnoxious, at least not yet. Lufy can
- 21:25be obnoxious, don't get me wrong, but is managing to seem pure and
- 21:30real, very genuine, and I just this is a difficult thing to pull
- 21:37off, and I just want to express how totally delighted I am by him
- 21:45already. We're one episode in this dude is loofy, and this is the
- 21:51sort of thing that I'm like, Good luck, kid, because if you
- 21:53decide you want to do literally anything else, You're gonna be lofy forever.
- 21:57This is like Daniel reha Cliff being Harry Potter. Like Daniel Radcliffe has gone
- 22:02on to do so many other things and act in so many other things,
- 22:04he will never shake that he was Harry Potter. That's immediately what everybody's going
- 22:08to think of every time they hear his name. And and Yaki, I
- 22:12don't think this is a bad thing because you are just killing it. Man.
- 22:18Oh canness is in the chat Yeah, hey, cannas saying he is
- 22:21so good, Yeah, he really really is. And the delivery of that
- 22:26line just saying mutiny that is that could so easily fall flat, that could
- 22:37fail so easily. And he mixed me. Even after the first time I
- 22:44actually laughed out loud when I saw the trailer, My lips still quirk.
- 22:48I still smirk a little like he still gets me because that's how good the
- 22:52delivery is on this very silly joke. And that is what he manages to
- 22:57keep doing, is just getting me to like laugh in spite myself, you
- 23:04know what I'm saying. So anyway, this is when he uh feels his
- 23:10ship beginning to genuinely sinc climbs into a barrel this is from the show,
- 23:17and winds up falling asleep in the barrel and getting picked up by a pirate
- 23:23ship that we all recognize, you guys when I tell you all how excited
- 23:33I was. So you know, there's a lot of things in this show
- 23:42that they're having to like really slow down on or do a lot more simply,
- 23:48but Alvida being in the first episode. I really wasn't sure when I
- 23:55first heard about the show if they were gonna do Alvida at all, because
- 23:59like, yes, that's how he meets Kobe, But you could have it
- 24:02be kind of anybody, and I would have understood the choice to have it
- 24:07be somebody of more overall significance. Now I say that with a full understanding
- 24:14that I haven't finished watching the animated show, so it's possible Alvida will have
- 24:18a much much bigger role to play in the animated one than she does currently.
- 24:22But she's kind of a side villain, she's not really a main player.
- 24:27But you guys know, I have such a soft spot for Alvida,
- 24:32Like she's so ridiculous. They really toned down her outfit for the show,
- 24:37and this was something I was extremely curious about because the costumes in one piece
- 24:41are banana pants, fucking bonkers and thinge the kind of shit. I could
- 24:49not see how you would have a person actually wear this and mebe able to
- 24:55take it at all seriously. And yet at the same time it was a
- 25:00big part of me that was sort of like, I don't want them to
- 25:04completely ignore what the costumes are either. And for the record, Alvida's costume
- 25:14like it's toned down. Really the overall thing that they they pull back on
- 25:21is the color scheme. The bright bright blues and pinks of her outfit are
- 25:30much more subdued. There's it's all sort of done like it's really been worn
- 25:36in the sun and in the weather and just over time has lost some of
- 25:41its luster. It's not like they're doing the make everything gray like the DC
- 25:47universe has done. I'm not trying to accuse it of that, but everything
- 25:52has a more weathered look, so to a degree, the outfit's going to
- 25:56be different because of that. But you know, Alvida in the in the
- 26:03show, she has like a navy blue with gold trim jacket. She's got
- 26:11white shorts. Like the whole thing is really really goofy looking, and in
- 26:18this they have her in a black sort of cowboy hat. She's got a
- 26:25brown leather jacket that's like this a similar style. It's I always think of
- 26:30this as like a marching band style because of the way the buttons go straight
- 26:34across. But I know that's not what it's called. It's just what I
- 26:37think of she is. The coat is like a sort of similar military look,
- 26:42but it doesn't have lapels. It's got a pretty different cut overall.
- 26:47It's just the effect is similar. And they have her in this like pink.
- 26:53It's like a pink blouse, but it also has either sleeves that come
- 26:57all the way down over her hands, or she's got gloves that are made
- 27:02out of a similar material. They leave her fingers free their fingerless gloves.
- 27:06But I really am so excited about her because she being a fat, curly
- 27:15haired girl. I mean, I have to cause player at some point,
- 27:19you know I do. It's just a fucking requirement. So someday, when
- 27:26I have actually finished the show and I can go to cons and not worry
- 27:32about spoilers and shit, I am going to be Elvida and nobody can stop
- 27:37me and I'm gonna have to decide whether I want to be show Elvida or
- 27:45well, they're both show. I guess do I want to be animation Alvida
- 27:49or live action Alvida? And part of me kind of wants to go the
- 27:53animation route because the costume is so crazy, But I'm I was really happy
- 28:00to see her, and I was really happy that she manages to carry off
- 28:06the vibe of somebody who is like, not, okay, this bitch is
- 28:10crazy. She swings across at one point while swinging a flail, and she
- 28:15looks so bad as she was truly scary, you know. And then there's
- 28:21a great moment about, like, you know, a few minutes after the
- 28:26whole taking of this other ship ends, they've loaded all kinds of stuff onto
- 28:33her ship, and one of them is the barrel that Lufy is in.
- 28:38She starts walking around talking about roanoa Zorro and the fact that he was definitely
- 28:42on their ship and she believes that they are hiding him. And one of
- 28:48these guys is not reading the fucking room. So when she says where is
- 28:57he and he's like, well, he went to six Island, She's like,
- 29:02that's definitely not true, because I'm out here, I don't know if
- 29:07you noticed, and I'm extremely dangerous and intimidating. There's nobody else he would
- 29:15chase. Why would he go to Six's That doesn't even make sense. And
- 29:21then he says something about how Zoro had a list of pirates and their bounties,
- 29:26and she said, and of course I was at the top. And
- 29:30this guy says, actually, your name wasn't on it, and I'm just
- 29:36like, kid, what why would you tell her that? Why would you
- 29:40tell her the truth? Just be like yeah, literally, what difference would
- 29:45it make if you just said, yeah, yeah, yeah, your name
- 29:48was definitely on it, just saying oh yeah, he heard a you know,
- 29:56a rumor you were on Six's Island, So that's why he went there,
- 29:59Like dude, But now he has to get his head bashed in with
- 30:04this duck flail is what would you call this just a I don't know the
- 30:12word a club? Is it just a club? Anyway? This is when
- 30:18we get our first look at Kobe, because she bashes this guy's head in
- 30:21and then she summons Kobe to clean up the blood, and he is so
- 30:30Kobe is so well cast. He's got that really anxious, nervous energy that
- 30:36Kobe has, but also you can see the sort of like desire to think
- 30:41better of the world and make it better in him. And there's something Kobe's
- 30:48face is so sweet and soft, like there's a femininity to his face.
- 30:57And I was just very struck by how familiar an actor he felt. And
- 31:04I looked into his IMDb eventually, and I could not find anything that I
- 31:10had seen him in. So the familiarity, I don't know where that's coming
- 31:14from, but they are reminding me of some other actor and I can't place
- 31:18it. Candice is saying, he's so earnest. Yes, that's the thing
- 31:25about the show in general, is how earnest it tends to be so.
- 31:32One other thing I want to touch on in terms of like the difference between
- 31:36the show here and the animation. The animation it's not like there's not blood
- 31:41in it, but there's really a sense that nobody ever actually dies, you
- 31:48know, like even people who whatever happened to them should definitely have killed them,
- 31:52even when they're on the ground with their eyes like white it out.
- 31:57Sometimes those people it jumps the scene and they're back and it's like it never
- 32:04happened. Sometimes they really are dead, you know, like there are big
- 32:09beads who I wasn't sure if we were going to go with the fact that
- 32:13they were really dead or not because of how the show is very indecisive about
- 32:16that. But then I would hear them reference that person later and be like,
- 32:22well you killed him, and I'd be like, okay, fine,
- 32:24we're gonna say he was dead then. And because of the way the live
- 32:30action works, it's so much more bloody and more obvious. And so the
- 32:36guy who's like head she bashes and this dude is dead, like you could
- 32:38see the brain matter on the deck that he's swabbing up. And later on
- 32:43when Zoro fights that guy and chops him into halves, that's pretty gruesome.
- 32:51You know. It's not like over the top. I wouldn't call it.
- 32:53It's not like the camera lingers on the you know, pulsing veins bleeding out
- 33:00on the ground or anything. But it certainly feels like it's much much more
- 33:06direct than some of the shows choices with the animation. So we go below
- 33:14decks to Kobe, who is washing her her mallet keep forgetting the word I'm
- 33:22looking for, and it's with this little spiked like mohawk and he's got a
- 33:28toothbrush to scrub all of the brains out of the cracks. Ugh, what
- 33:32a gross job. And this is when one of the barrels begins to move
- 33:39and he goes and just as he gets up to the barrel, like Loofy
- 33:44pops out of it and he starts screaming, and Lufy is telling him just
- 33:47shit, because he's trying to figure out where he is, if there's food,
- 33:53what he should do to like, you know, there's just trying to
- 33:57establish the overall situation, and the whole vibe between these two is very,
- 34:05very true to the show, with Kobe being kind of owed by Loofy and
- 34:10Lufy being genuinely puzzled why Kobe's in this position with Alvida when he doesn't want
- 34:17to be. There's just a real well then you just leave, and Kobe
- 34:22says something like she would never let me leave, and you can almost hear
- 34:25Lufy going let you, like, you just leave. I don't even understand
- 34:30the relationship between what you're saying and what I'm saying. But obviously Kobe has
- 34:36been like there have been very few options open to him and Alvida would take
- 34:44it personally in a way that would be like, I'll I will find you,
- 34:46just to punish you so that other people don't get the idea they can
- 34:50just leave. So when Kobe mentions to him that Alvida is a pirate,
- 34:59Luf He's like, oh great, I'm a pirate too, And Kobe's like,
- 35:04you don't seem like a pirate because their pieces as shit, and Lufy
- 35:07says, not the pirates I know, And then we get a flashback to
- 35:14very young, adorable Loofy. This kid's quite good, and this is the
- 35:19whole establishing of him and Shanks as friends that he wants to like emulate Shanks
- 35:25so bad, and yet doesn't really fully understand what it is he's getting into.
- 35:32And yet he doesn't have a lot of options open to him either.
- 35:36So it's like, even if he knew what he was getting into, is
- 35:38that going to change his plan? He's got exactly two options, throw himself
- 35:45into piracy or stay on this god forsaken island. He doesn't have any family,
- 35:49there's nobody like watching over him who would notice him gone, so there's
- 35:54no motivation for him to stay here. And he's like talking about joining the
- 36:00crew, but Shanks is not interested, and at one point somebody is like,
- 36:07Shanks are being a little hard on him, and Shanks says, it's
- 36:10better to have a kid now who's disappointed than a kid who's dead later,
- 36:16which is pretty much the whole Like, that's what it comes down to.
- 36:22Now, let's talk about Shanks. Shanks is the only like disappointment for me
- 36:31so far. It's not that the actor isn't good, but Shanks had a
- 36:37certain swagger to him that I don't feel this actor is quite bringing. And
- 36:45also this fucking wig they have on him. Now, the show is littered
- 36:52with bad, crazy wigs because the show, the fucking what are you supposed
- 36:58to do? Anime? Is impossible most of the time, Like it has
- 37:01to be a wig, so I get it, But this in particular looks
- 37:08like it's just some strands that were ripped out of a wig, like a
- 37:14couple of lefts that somebody sewed to the inside of the hat. It's bad.
- 37:20I really really hate this look, and that look combined with this dude
- 37:27just not quite packing the charisma I was hoping for. It's not a good
- 37:34combination. I feel like he's just a little bit of a letdown, so
- 37:39we'll see maybe he will grow on me, maybe there'll be a point which
- 37:44I'm like, oh, okay, no, I see it now, But
- 37:47I'll say by the end of this episode, I was just kind of like,
- 37:52I guess, okay, I guess that's supposed to be Shanks like that
- 37:57wig guys, I would swear I see natural hair poking out from underneath it
- 38:01in the back, like it just doesn't even look like it's put on correctly.
- 38:05So anyway, this is a moment where we get Loofy stabbing himself in
- 38:09the face. He was aiming for his eye and missed, apparently because he's
- 38:15a lunatic and I forgot about this whole thing and that he's like trying to
- 38:22prove himself. So later on he's getting stitches and complaining and Shanks is like,
- 38:30I thought you were supposed to be tough, and he's like, well,
- 38:31yeah, I am, but you know, and he says, you're
- 38:36lucky you didn't put out your eye, and he says, well, I
- 38:37was aiming for it, but you know, sometimes she just doesn't work out
- 38:42like you meant it to work out. So we go back to the present
- 38:49and Lufy is talking about how he wants to be a pirate because that means
- 38:52you're free, and Kobe is like, dude, that's not my life.
- 38:55I'm told what to do every second of the day. And Lufi is genuinely
- 39:02like, what you just don't let people tell you what to do. If
- 39:07I listen to what people say, I would never have left to try and
- 39:12find the one piece. And this is when Kobe is like, what are
- 39:17is that what you're doing? Are you kidding me? No, everybody's looking
- 39:22for that. You're not gonna go find it. I mean, there's like
- 39:25there's simply no way. And they begin kind of like going back and forth
- 39:32about dreams, and this comes up later on, but I'll address it now.
- 39:37When Kobe finally admits his dream that he thinks is stupid is to become
- 39:44a marine. So Loofy is like, all right, well let's make that
- 39:49happen. I need a map to the Grand Line, and you want to
- 39:52become a marine. So we'll just stop at a marine headquarters and I'll get
- 39:55my map and you can join up, and it'll be good. We'll have
- 39:59each got and what we wanted. For now we have the bit with Lufy
- 40:04trying to get a a what do you call it? Life raft he's about
- 40:09to take off. He picks up an oar and accidentally turns and hits something
- 40:15metal and wakes up the entire ship, and Alvida thinks that Lufy is a
- 40:22bounty hunter. So she's thinking here that Kobe betrayed her to him. But
- 40:30once she finds out like that he wants to be king of the pirates,
- 40:34she's just like, yeah, that's not going to happen. There's already a
- 40:38most powerful pirate of the seas here and it's me, And of course they
- 40:44all begin to chant for her. So then she brings out her huge mace
- 40:51and says, oh, so weird, Kobe, I didn't hear you saying
- 40:55anything, And Lufy is like, Kobe is his own man, it's fine,
- 41:04he doesn't have to say it, and she says, no, no,
- 41:06he's not, he's mine. And Lufy says, he said you were
- 41:12mean and cruel and each of the things that he says here. Her smile
- 41:16gets bigger. But then when he says and that you're as dumb as a
- 41:22sea cow, that's when she loses it and she goes for Kobe, and
- 41:25we get our first fight, getting to see what Lufy's power looks like.
- 41:31Now, this is always going to be a really, really big question because
- 41:39some of the Devil Fruit powers are completely bizarre, and I genuinely don't know
- 41:49how you make them look like anything in a live action without it being like
- 41:54so laughable that you could never you know what I'm saying. So Lufy's power,
- 42:00I feel like, is one that's relatively easy in a lot of ways
- 42:07to do. It has a very strong Roger Rabbit sort of feel to it,
- 42:13and we see it the first time with him getting shot and the bullet
- 42:17just like bouncing out of his chest into the other guy, and then she
- 42:23slams him in the middle and he you know, bows outward and she says,
- 42:28what kind of monster are you? And he says, the stretchy kind.
- 42:31Long story short, She goes overboard and he looks around and says,
- 42:37does anybody else have a problem with Kobe? And the place is on fire
- 42:44at this point, and this is the moment that I really was like,
- 42:50oh, Okay, yeah, here's Loofy. Because he's been sunshine, he's
- 42:54been positivity, he's been following your dreams. But when he gets serious and
- 43:00says, does anybody else have a problem with Kobe? He is genuinely intimidating,
- 43:07like this is a dude. If I ran up on him on the
- 43:09street, I would be like whatever, look at this string bean. He
- 43:15comes at me with that kind of bass in his voice, and I'm going,
- 43:17nah, I'm good, I don't want that smoke, thank you,
- 43:22but no, I'll pass. Like there's just a whole energy shift when he's
- 43:30getting like it's here, and also when she starts to really go after Kobe,
- 43:36he stands in front of Kobe and says that's enough, and it's just
- 43:42a complete like, yeah, I am not to be fucked with. I
- 43:46will handle the situation. And I was like, all right, well there,
- 43:54uh okay. Candace says there was something about the way he delivered that
- 44:01line, the stretchy kind that absolutely killed me. I cackled. He gave
- 44:07Lufy some depth and I really just love him definitely. And this is the
- 44:10thing about Lufy in the anime as a character is that he is a complete
- 44:15goofball. And then something we'll just like set him off because somebody went after
- 44:22his friend. Somebody went after an innocent and all of a sudden smiling.
- 44:27Lufy is gone, and there's just this like shadowed, gripped dude standing there,
- 44:34going what did you just say? And You're like, oh, they
- 44:38went after the wrong one, and I'm really glad that he's able to like
- 44:43do that convincingly here. So anyway, I have to jump ahead here to
- 44:51Roanoa's Oro, y'all. I really am so oh sorry, I apologize ahead
- 45:02of time, but most of my coverage of this show is just going to
- 45:09be me thirsting over Zoro. So just sorry, but I don't really know
- 45:19what I'm supposed to do, Like, how am I not? You know
- 45:24what I'm saying? I M so it says this actor's name is mken Yu
- 45:39one name, no last. I can not with this guy. What's happening
- 45:52here is he is at a sight that seems like it is of worship.
- 45:55He's lighting a candle, and he is being approached by mister seven of the
- 46:02Baroque Works. So they're bringing in the Baroque works really quick, because this
- 46:07was not how early this all happened, unless I'm wrong and they were mentioned
- 46:12real early, but I don't remember that. And he turns his back on
- 46:17this guy and it's just like now thanks, I kind of got my own
- 46:21thing going on. And when he turns this back, you really see the
- 46:24shape of this man and the shoulders and the dip between his shoulders and the
- 46:32way his shirt like he just turns his fully clothed back to this man,
- 46:42and I was already going, oh my god, and it just got worse.
- 46:49It just kept getting worse. Everything this dude does is hotter than the
- 46:55thing he just did. I don't know how well I'm supposed to watch this
- 47:00show. What am I? You know, Like, come on, so
- 47:07we get a fucking dope ass sword fight, and forgive me, guys,
- 47:10because I'm running out of time and I'm barely I'm not even halfway through,
- 47:15but I'm gonna have to speed shit up this sword fight. I will say.
- 47:19The fight coordinating and the editing I think is done really well. It's
- 47:24not like it's not like we're at the levels of like John Wick or something.
- 47:30Okay, there are certain things that I feel like have given me some
- 47:34unrealistic expectations, but I think that they've done a pretty fucking impressive job with
- 47:42the fight scenes here and then the one later in the navy yard and Zoro.
- 47:50Really especially the fight in the bar when everything first begins to pop off,
- 47:55where it just feels like he's strolling with very little need to like pay
- 48:04attention to what's around him because everybody is so slow and predictable that he doesn't
- 48:09have to worry. It's done excellently. There's just a very strong sense with
- 48:17zoro of he simply has nothing to worry about because he is that good and
- 48:27if he strolls in that shit's over already, you know. And I love
- 48:30him going up against mister seven and this dude. There comes a point where
- 48:34he really realizes, oh, this was a mistake, and then he gets
- 48:38cut in half and his has go to different sides and it's just it's a
- 48:45great, great moment. So this is when we have the flashback with Shanks
- 48:52and the pirate who he gets in a fight with, and Loofy says that
- 48:55he's not a man because he lets this guy walk all over him, and
- 49:00that's when Shank says that he's not ready. And we cut then to Nami,
- 49:06who does the thing where she pretends that she just escaped with her life
- 49:12and this one chest of treasure and these two dudes, these guys are wearing
- 49:19much much more one piece to me style outfits than anybody on the show so
- 49:25far. They're absolutely out of pocket. The guy's wig, the black man
- 49:32has a wig that's like combed parted in the center into these two lumps,
- 49:38and the other dude has this weird hat on, and they're both wearing bright
- 49:43colors that are like striped and patterned in ways that feel really silly. Overall
- 49:49the fact that they I believe these two wind up being with Buggy later.
- 49:54You can see that in their costuming here. But yeah, yeah, this
- 50:00whole bit is very accurate to the anime, and I loved seeing her sail
- 50:07away with their ship. Then let's go the bar scene with Zoro. Nami
- 50:13is also at this bar and she is she tells one guy that he's too
- 50:16tall and goes after this other dude, and it turns out this is because
- 50:21she wants to steal the uniform, so she's looking for somebody who is going
- 50:23to be a good fit. And we get a sequence that I just love
- 50:29so much. So first we have uh, what is the name of this
- 50:32the helmepo I think is his name. I just really want to give him
- 50:38some props as well, So let's see if he's here in the IMDb Aiden
- 50:43Scott Aiden Scott fucking amazing. I am into it. He does such a
- 50:52good job with the weird mouth and laughter and the like. He's just really,
- 51:00really, really great. There's a sequence later where he's naked in his
- 51:04in his room, like practicing with the sword in front of the mirror,
- 51:07and that was so it felt like so accurate to the type of person he
- 51:13is. The whole way he carried himself. It was great. And yeah,
- 51:17this fight between him and Zoro is of course when Loofy steps in and
- 51:24well not steps in, it's sort of like he zeros in and sees,
- 51:29oh, here's a guy who's like a really good fighter and also is standing
- 51:32up for this little girl. And I just again can't handle it with Zoro,
- 51:42y'all. How Mepo does not have the hair, and at first and
- 51:46I was sort of like, that's weird. I mean, that's actually bad
- 51:52hair. That would be pretty easy to carry off in without a wig,
- 51:58you know. And then he had a later and I was like, oh,
- 52:00that's a pretty good joke. Okay, I like that actually, but
- 52:05yeah, this whole fight sequence, this is the sort of thing that I'm
- 52:08planning to rewatch this with Owen, and I'm gonna be very much looking forward
- 52:15to seeing Owen's reaction to this fight scene. It's just I mean, Zora's
- 52:21like I said, strolling through it, He's practically one handed. There's no
- 52:25weapon even drawn. Like It's very good. So let's jump ahead a little
- 52:31bit here to the point where he meets axe hand iron Jaw. What the
- 52:37fuck is his name? This guy is one of my least favorite antagonists in
- 52:45the show. He just feels so one note to me in a lot of
- 52:49ways. So I'm glad that he winds up sort of becoming less of a
- 52:53thing. But for right now, I think this actor is doing a decent
- 53:00job with what the character is, and you know what to expect from somebody
- 53:07like this. And he gives Ro the option of becoming a marine and going
- 53:15out into the yard for seven days, which I thought it was funny that
- 53:20he assumes it's just seven days when I'm like, well, for striking a
- 53:23marine, how many marines did you strike those? Orro? But that winds
- 53:28up not being an issue later. So Zoro, who is constantly people are
- 53:32trying to recruit him because he's such a fucking badass, is like, nah,
- 53:36I have my own thing going on again, which is what he also
- 53:40repeats to Loofy when he's out in the yard. He's talking tell him Epo
- 53:45about how like, oh, you know, when I'm let out of here
- 53:46and now I'm up, is like, dude, you're not getting out of
- 53:49here. I can't believe you think my dad's letting you go. And he
- 53:52seems to sort of realize, like, oh shit, maybe I should have
- 53:55thought of that. And when Loofy comes in and it's just like you should
- 54:02become one of my pirate crew, He's like, well I hunt you guys,
- 54:08Like, no, I don't want to do that once again. I've
- 54:14got my own thing going on. But what happens later is Loufy unties him
- 54:24from the spot that he is being kept and then doesn't demand anything of him
- 54:32in repayment. What Lufy says is, it just seems like a pretty big
- 54:37waste of time for you to be here when there's something that you want out
- 54:43there. What he says is, I made a promise to somebody a long
- 54:46time ago that I would become the best swordsman in the world. And Lufy
- 54:52is nothing but a sucker for a dream, so of course this is the
- 54:59magic world to get him to help you, And you can tell that Zora's
- 55:02genuinely sort of moved by the fact that Lufy's helping him just because he respects
- 55:07his dream and not because he's trying to get something in return. So we
- 55:14go then to Nami, who is you know, poking around wearing this uniform
- 55:17trying to find the map. We have her and Lufy running into one another,
- 55:23and the two of them eventually accidentally like they are walked right into axe
- 55:32hand, and she manages to sweet talk him and give him just enough of
- 55:38a compliment that he's flattered, but it doesn't seem totally over the top.
- 55:45It's like it's a compliment but it's so subdued that it works for a guy
- 55:52like this really well. And Lufy is getting extremely impressed with how she's handling
- 55:59the situation. I love that, He's like, she's the best, and
- 56:01then realizes, like best of the worst. I hate marines. Oh my
- 56:07god. So eventually, by teaming up, they do indeed find the safe
- 56:15where the map would be, but they can't get it open in time,
- 56:19so Lufy has to use his wild powers to yank the uh safe out of
- 56:27the floor, and what's the word I want? The like the force of
- 56:34that pulls them through like the window and into the yard outside, where we
- 56:39get the whole fight scene with all of these marines and Zoro is walking by
- 56:45them, clearly intending to just fucking leave. But he turns around and he
- 56:50sees Nami, and he sees Loofy, the dude who helped him, who's
- 56:54kind of starting to get thrown around a little bit. It's clear they're holding
- 56:58their own, but this might be too many people for the two of them,
- 57:01and he's like, uh fine, and he just sails in there like
- 57:07a goddamned force of nature and just takes all of them out. And this
- 57:15whole thing is so like the posturing and everything is very very fun. We
- 57:22have the mention of the Black Cat pirates here, and I'm just sort of
- 57:25like there as defeated as this dude seems to think. I'm interested to see
- 57:30how that's going to happen, what's gonna go on there? But yeah,
- 57:35then we have the you know, one on one with I keep wanting to
- 57:42call him axe Hand, but it's Morgan, right, It's ax Hand.
- 57:46Morgan, I think, but yeah, they this whole thing is fun because
- 57:52it's the first time you get to Cazoro using the three sword technique, and
- 57:55Lucy says, so that's where it goes because he could not figure out what
- 58:00the point of three swords was. And you see a moment where that third
- 58:05sword does indeed seem to come in handy, which I appreciate because sometimes that
- 58:09three sword technique is lost on me. You know, there are points where
- 58:14I'm just sort of like that feels like it's more of a nuisance than a
- 58:17help. But okay, and Loofy decks Morgan and he apparently gets knocked out.
- 58:27I don't think he's dead if I'm not mistaken. And they're looking at
- 58:30the safe and talking about how they're going to open it, and Zoro just
- 58:35picks that shit up and begins to walk with it, and it looks like
- 58:39it weighs like two hundred pounds. So they head over to the docks and
- 58:47he drops it onto Nami's ship and she like, there was a big part
- 58:53of me that was expecting her to be like, you guys aren't coming with
- 58:58me, but for now she's like, I guess we're all in this together
- 59:02and he's looking for his friend. Lufy is like, well, where's you
- 59:06know? Where's my bro? I can't leave without Kobe. This is when
- 59:08how Mepo shows up and he's got a gun because he got two guns.
- 59:15I think it's two guns, and Lufy's pointing out his hair. Oh my
- 59:20god, it's so good you guys. How Meppo tries to fire a shot
- 59:28at Zoro but it's like way off and he starts talking about how if he
- 59:34catches them, he's gonna get a medal, and then out of nowhere here
- 59:37comes Kobe and he decks him in the face and it's a real moment of
- 59:45triumph for Kobe. Good for you, Bud appreciates you. And when Lufy's
- 59:51like all right, it's time for us to go, Kobe says I'm not
- 59:54coming with you, and Lufy has like, oh shit, but he remembers
- 1:00:00what his goal is and earlier, after seeing the way that Helmepo treated that
- 1:00:06little girl, Kobe was like, this doesn't make any sense. They are
- 1:00:09the Marines, they're supposed to be defending people like her. What is the
- 1:00:15fucking deal? And Lufy has to be like they're good and bad people.
- 1:00:19In the pirates and good and bad people in the Marines. You would be
- 1:00:22one of the good ones. And Kobe says, here, I want to
- 1:00:27help people who can't defend themselves. Next time we meet, we might be
- 1:00:30enemies, and Lufy says, but for now we're friends. And it's really
- 1:00:37sweet. I loved it. I love this so much. He just gives
- 1:00:42Kobe a shove on the shoulder and it's just like, ah, right,
- 1:00:45buddy, ever, like, you know, parting as friends. It's sweet.
- 1:00:50I liked it. And they sail away on this little sailboat. I
- 1:00:55really really like the look of the sailboat, the way that it's designed.
- 1:01:00I just I don't know, there's something about it that feels really like warm
- 1:01:04and cozy to me. And I sort of wish this was gonna be the
- 1:01:09ship that they're on for the whole show, and it may be, like
- 1:01:15I don't know how long it takes for them to meet Oosop, you know.
- 1:01:21And then we get a moment here where there's a ship with like a
- 1:01:24bulldog on the helm and we have got the guy who was in charge of
- 1:01:29the execution of Roger. He's picking up the phone and it's Garp. You
- 1:01:35guys, I had not put together that this dude was supposed to be Garp,
- 1:01:40not until this very instant. That's weird. Huh okay, you know,
- 1:01:52like spoilers again for the anime, Garp is Lufy's grandfather, so huh
- 1:02:04okay, well this is surprising. I didn't think they were gonna loop him
- 1:02:09in on things quite this early. But okay, but yeah, he hears
- 1:02:15that there is a pirate in a straw hat that got a map to the
- 1:02:22grand line and clearly this, you know, is very meaningful to him.
- 1:02:30His face falls, he hangs up, and when he is talking to his
- 1:02:36like second man in command, that guy brings up baroque works and he's like,
- 1:02:42is that what this is about? And he's like, nope, it
- 1:02:44is about somebody in a straw hat. And that is the end of the
- 1:02:50episode. I think, is oh no, no, no, my bad.
- 1:02:52The end of the episode. How could I forget? Is us getting
- 1:02:57to see Buggy the clown and he is being reported to by I'm trying to
- 1:03:04remember what this character's name is, but he's got the stripey hair and I
- 1:03:09believe in the anime he has like a pet lion. Correct me if I'm
- 1:03:15wrong, but this dude is probably like you know in the anime. He
- 1:03:25has such a distinctive look that when I saw him in the bar as he
- 1:03:31just like walks away to go to inform to his boss, I immediately recognized
- 1:03:38who he was. And I there's just certain looks that they fucking nailed for
- 1:03:45the live action, and he's really one of them. And yeah, we
- 1:03:52get to see Buggy and he is so creepy. I'm very very excited.
- 1:03:58I love Buggy then he is such a fun, weird character, and I
- 1:04:04feel like they have really found an actor who is embracing the true bonker's nature
- 1:04:13of this dude. So I'm looking forward to this a lot. Candace says,
- 1:04:19Garp is so hot. Yeah, I could see that. I'm really
- 1:04:23interested in how Sonji's going to be because I felt like in the preview I
- 1:04:29saw Sanji was really giving, So we'll see. I'm excited to meet the
- 1:04:33whole rest of the crew. And of course, you know, this season
- 1:04:35we don't have a Chopper, So if we're getting season two, I assume
- 1:04:40we have to have Chopper, and that is going to be a challenge because
- 1:04:45I don't know how you do Chopper. Are you going to do a puppet?
- 1:04:48Are you going to do CGI? Are you like gonna have somebody in
- 1:04:51a suit? Like? Genuinely, I don't know what I I would prefer
- 1:05:00they do. I feel like I would like a puppet more than I would
- 1:05:03like Cegi, But I can't even say that with total certainty, so we'll
- 1:05:13have to see. I'm over time, so I've got to wrap this up.
- 1:05:16But guys, I'm so excited. Thank you all for joining me.
- 1:05:18Thank you Gabby again for commissioning this, and until next week to lou motherfuckers,
- 1:05:54that was an unspoiled network podcast.
