- 0:00Speaker 1: When you lean into struggle and really hard times with
- 0:07Speaker 1: hope and a growth mindset, something really beautiful is on
- 0:12Speaker 1: the other side.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Hey everyone, Emily and Body here bringing you Part three
- 0:31Speaker 2: of the Turning the Page series, a special five day
- 0:37Speaker 2: event from Hurdle, a wellness focused podcast where I sit
- 0:41Speaker 2: down with inspiring individuals to talk about everything from their
- 0:45Speaker 2: big wins to how they've gotten through some of life's
- 0:47Speaker 2: toughest moments.
- 0:49Speaker 3: On the show, you.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Can expect vulnerability, motivation, and candid discussions with everyone from
- 0:56Speaker 2: top athletes to aspiring entrepreneurs on what it really takes
- 1:00Speaker 2: to follow your passions.
- 1:02Speaker 3: My mission is simple to.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Inspire you to be your best self, move with intention,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and have some fun along the way.
- 1:11Speaker 3: And we're having a lot of fun today.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I am so excited, so so excited to be catching
- 1:16Speaker 2: up with none other than Sadie Lincoln. She is the
- 1:20Speaker 2: founder of Bar three and she was one of my
- 1:23Speaker 2: first ever guests on the show. We are reminiscing all
- 1:27Speaker 2: about that in today's episode. Literally, when Sadie gave me
- 1:31Speaker 2: her time back when Hurdle was a little, itty bitty
- 1:34Speaker 2: baby show, I was just so humbled, so blown away,
- 1:40Speaker 2: so appreciative, and it's fun because this was, you know,
- 1:44Speaker 2: such a decent chunk of time ago that to have
- 1:47Speaker 2: her back on the show is really special because a
- 1:50Speaker 2: lot of you who may be listening to this now
- 1:53Speaker 2: may not have heard her original story. So if you
- 1:55Speaker 2: haven't listened to Sadie's first episode, it.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Is linked in the show note.
- 2:00Speaker 2: All of the details on how Bar three came to be,
- 2:04Speaker 2: and today, like I said, we're catching up about all
- 2:07Speaker 2: of the things, not necessarily every single thing from the
- 2:11Speaker 2: last three years since we sat down last, but certainly
- 2:14Speaker 2: about the last nine to ten months and what twenty
- 2:17Speaker 2: twenty has been like for Sadie has been like for
- 2:20Speaker 2: Bar three. She talks about teaching classes from her bathroom,
- 2:25Speaker 2: which I absolutely love and can totally relate to, although
- 2:29Speaker 2: my bathroom, as I insinuate in this episode, is quite small,
- 2:34Speaker 2: and we also chat about how it's been interesting for
- 2:38Speaker 2: her as an entrepreneur to see how the Bar three
- 2:41Speaker 2: fanatics have taken to this workout over the pandemic, understanding
- 2:46Speaker 2: the importance of being in sync with their body and mind,
- 2:49Speaker 2: and also leaning into Zoom classes, maybe more so than
- 2:53Speaker 2: other on demand content, because they want that community.
- 2:56Speaker 3: They want to be back on.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Video the people that they're used to hitting up the studio.
- 3:03Speaker 3: With so found that really interesting.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I find Sadie's perspective as always super refreshing. It is
- 3:09Speaker 2: clear that she has had many a learning in her time,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and again just so grateful for her perspective.
- 3:16Speaker 3: This episode will definitely put you at ease.
- 3:19Speaker 2: And give you some essential confidence that you can handle
- 3:24Speaker 2: whenever it is that twenty twenty one and beyond throws
- 3:28Speaker 2: your way. Before we get into it today, I do
- 3:31Speaker 2: want to give some love to my friends at Athletic
- 3:34Speaker 2: Greens for making this turning the.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Page series possible.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I nearly fell off my chair when Sadie brought up
- 3:42Speaker 2: in today's episode that I got her hooked on Athletic Greens.
- 3:48Speaker 3: It's so funny to me.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I gift every year, for the most part, guests that
- 3:52Speaker 2: have been on the show their own box, and sometimes.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I hear about it, sometimes I don't.
- 3:57Speaker 2: But in Sadie's case, she told me that, just like me,
- 4:01Speaker 2: the daily drink completely transformed per morning routine.
- 4:06Speaker 3: And you know it's not a surprise to me.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Once you give this stuff a shot, it may be
- 4:12Speaker 2: hard to remember what life was like without it. It's
- 4:14Speaker 2: got seventy five full food sourced ingredients, the antioxid and
- 4:18Speaker 2: equivalent of twelve servings of fruits and vegetables, as well
- 4:23Speaker 2: as so many other great things prebiotics, probiotics, adaptogens, superfoods.
- 4:29Speaker 2: The lista's endless. You have got to try it for yourself.

- 5:20Speaker 3: And with that, let's get to hurdling today.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I am sitting down with Sadie Lincoln that She is
- 5:34Speaker 2: the founder of Bar three. Sadie, I'm so excited to
- 5:38Speaker 2: have you back on the show. How are you doing today.
- 5:41Speaker 1: I'm doing, I'm you know what, I'm just I'm doing Okay,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I'll go with okay today.
- 5:47Speaker 3: I think Okay, there's a strong start.
- 5:49Speaker 2: And I think that's something that's really beautiful about this year,
- 5:52Speaker 2: is that maybe we think a little bit more about
- 5:55Speaker 2: answering that question truthfully.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Yeah, because there's no more errors about like, no one's
- 6:04Speaker 1: really crushing it right now.
- 6:05Speaker 4: You know that.
- 6:07Speaker 3: I totally yeah, I can totally relate.
- 6:10Speaker 2: It's interesting to me as I think about you know,
- 6:13Speaker 2: you and I catching up today because I started this
- 6:16Speaker 2: show about three years ago from when this episode will
- 6:20Speaker 2: be coming out. You were one of the first guests
- 6:23Speaker 2: I had on the show, and man, so much has
- 6:27Speaker 2: changed since then.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I can't believe it's been three years. I remember sitting
- 6:31Speaker 1: in that in that little we work sound booth.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Oh my god, I miss it.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I miss like even like the subpar sound booth right now,
- 6:39Speaker 2: The things I would do, it's it's crazy and reflecting
- 6:43Speaker 2: on that time, I mean, for me as an entrepreneur,
- 6:48Speaker 2: as someone who was so passionate about this thing.
- 6:51Speaker 3: I was so overwhelmed and grateful for.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Your time and that you would come and sit down
- 6:59Speaker 2: with me because you were coming into the city and
- 7:01Speaker 2: doing all these interviews and I was like, come do.
- 7:04Speaker 3: This thing that is completely unheard of, and you were like.
- 7:07Speaker 4: Okay, absolutely, yeah, absolutely.
- 7:10Speaker 2: So I mean, we don't need to completely catch up
- 7:13Speaker 2: on all of the last three years, but talk to
- 7:17Speaker 2: me about what's going on with bar three.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Where are you guys at now?
- 7:23Speaker 1: Yeah, well, just to catch you up, We're at we
- 7:26Speaker 1: have one hundred and seventy two franchise studios now, actually
- 7:30Speaker 1: six of them are owned, but the rest are franchised.
- 7:33Speaker 1: We're an owner operated model, so all owned by women,
- 7:37Speaker 1: one hundred percent women run and owned. And how we
- 7:42Speaker 1: model franchises, each owner basically has one studio. The most
- 7:46Speaker 1: an owner has this five in the DC area, but
- 7:48Speaker 1: most most of our owners have one studio, and so
- 7:51Speaker 1: she's really at the heart of the business in her community.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And so I'm speaking on behalf of all those incredible owners.
- 8:02Speaker 1: They are incredible, and I have to say I'm so
- 8:06Speaker 1: proud of them because this model is in a sense
- 8:11Speaker 1: paying off for us because they've built such an emotional
- 8:14Speaker 1: connection with the communities that they serve that.
- 8:18Speaker 4: We're hanging in.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You know, people are taking our live stream classes. Many
- 8:23Speaker 1: of our studios have had to close our doors again
- 8:25Speaker 1: once again because of COVID, so we're doing live stream
- 8:28Speaker 1: classes from our studios, and our clients in those communities
- 8:33Speaker 1: are choosing those live stream classes even over our much
- 8:37Speaker 1: more premium digital online subscription product, which we've had since
- 8:41Speaker 1: I don't know, twenty twelve. I think because they have
- 8:44Speaker 1: an emotional connection with those owners and the instructors that
- 8:47Speaker 1: they love. And you know, it's kind of like Brady
- 8:49Speaker 1: Bunch style on the Zoom with your fellow clients doing
- 8:55Speaker 1: bar three together. So really troubleshooting as an organization and
- 9:00Speaker 1: leaning big time into collective wisdom and learning from each
- 9:04Speaker 1: other and best practices, and it's been it's been a
- 9:08Speaker 1: remarkable era for sure.
- 9:11Speaker 2: Yeah, And you know, I think you bring up a
- 9:13Speaker 2: really interesting point. And obviously everyone is different in their
- 9:17Speaker 2: consumption habits and you know what it is that they
- 9:20Speaker 2: like from a digital streaming workout. But I do think
- 9:25Speaker 2: there's something to be said for, you know, feeling like
- 9:28Speaker 2: a part of something when so many of us are
- 9:31Speaker 2: spending so much time you know, either alone or just
- 9:35Speaker 2: with one partner or with our families and not doing
- 9:37Speaker 2: what we used to do, like just being able to
- 9:40Speaker 2: be in an environment where it feels safe to be vulnerable.
- 9:43Speaker 2: And I think vulnerability is such a big part of
- 9:46Speaker 2: like fitness and sweating with other people. So it's interesting
- 9:50Speaker 2: to me the point that you brought up, knowing that
- 9:52Speaker 2: you have had that greater digital streaming service for some
- 9:56Speaker 2: time now that these clients are still excited more so
- 10:01Speaker 2: maybe about that you know at home zoom with my
- 10:05Speaker 2: buddy's kind of fitness.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Yeah, there's so many surprises underneath this really trying time
- 10:14Speaker 1: that are beautiful, and one of them is just the
- 10:16Speaker 1: sweetness of getting to know each other in our homes.
- 10:20Speaker 1: You know, I'm doing bar three for example, in my bathroom,
- 10:24Speaker 1: like on my bathroom counter, and at this point I
- 10:26Speaker 1: don't care, Like maybe in the beginning I would like,
- 10:29Speaker 1: you know, clean up a little bit, but now it's
- 10:31Speaker 1: just like it doesn't even matter anymore.
- 10:34Speaker 4: And you know, and I video on like I like
- 10:39Speaker 4: that I can.
- 10:40Speaker 1: You know, I'm I'm seeing I'm part of something I
- 10:44Speaker 1: can and you know, I'm not focusing on everybody else,
- 10:47Speaker 1: but I know that they're there in their sweet living
- 10:49Speaker 1: rooms and you know, wherever they're doing their workout with
- 10:52Speaker 1: their kids running around and their dogs and you know whatever.
- 10:57Speaker 1: And just those moments when the instructor calls us out
- 11:00Speaker 1: and you know, before and after is it's really a
- 11:03Speaker 1: special sweet moment. Yeah, and and quite surprising. I mean
- 11:09Speaker 1: when we had to shut down the first time, there
- 11:13Speaker 1: was such a there was.
- 11:15Speaker 4: So much grief.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I mean, we really I turned to Chris, who's my
- 11:20Speaker 1: husband and co founder. I was like, are we gonna
- 11:21Speaker 1: make it?
- 11:22Speaker 3: This?
- 11:23Speaker 1: Is this it?
- 11:24Speaker 3: You know?
- 11:24Speaker 4: There was that moment of is this it?
- 11:27Speaker 1: And then within seventy two hours all of our owners
- 11:29Speaker 1: had rallied and we were doing live streams and we
- 11:31Speaker 1: knew we were going to be okay. But yeah, it's
- 11:34Speaker 1: been amazing, truly a part of something.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I'm envisioning your bathroom to be like much bigger than
- 11:41Speaker 2: my Like I'm not even exaggerating here. I think my
- 11:44Speaker 2: bathroom might be like four feet by four feet.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Well, that's all you really need.
- 11:51Speaker 1: The nice thing is with bar three, all you need
- 11:54Speaker 1: is the real estate of a yoga mat.
- 11:55Speaker 4: And maybe your yoga mat would have to fold in half.
- 11:58Speaker 2: A yoga Oh man, I'm like thinking about doing bar
- 12:03Speaker 2: in my bathroom and loving it. But I mean, you're
- 12:05Speaker 2: not the only founder that does fitness in their bathroom,
- 12:08Speaker 2: that's for sure. I think I read recently that John
- 12:11Speaker 2: Foley has a peloton tread in his downstairs bathroom.
- 12:16Speaker 1: We're just making it work people, all right. A lot
- 12:19Speaker 1: of people do Bar three in their closets, that's for sure.
- 12:22Speaker 1: It's where they can hide from their children.
- 12:25Speaker 3: I appreciate that. I have so much respect for that.
- 12:27Speaker 2: So outside of I mean the resilience that you have
- 12:31Speaker 2: seen in the Bar three community, talk to me a
- 12:34Speaker 2: little bit more about how things have been going for
- 12:37Speaker 2: you at home during this year.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Wow.
- 12:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm a mother of two teenagers.
- 12:44Speaker 4: I have a fifteen year old and a sixteen.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Year old, and that's been, you know, epic, just trying
- 12:51Speaker 1: to get them out of their bedrooms.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Are you tick talking a lot?
- 12:55Speaker 4: Am I tiktoking?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Are you tiktoking with them? Are they tiktoking?
- 12:59Speaker 1: They TikTok, but they do it like they really like
- 13:02Speaker 1: their separation of space.
- 13:03Speaker 4: For me, so I kind of stay. You know, it's
- 13:06Speaker 4: just so not.
- 13:07Speaker 1: Cool to be a part of that world, you know,
- 13:11Speaker 1: So I try to give them like some boundaries, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 1: allow them to have their own space that way, but
- 13:17Speaker 1: they certainly are and that's been interesting managing social media.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Oh it era when they can't physically see their friends
- 13:27Speaker 1: and just navigating Okay, what's healthy and what's not healthy?
- 13:33Speaker 1: You know, how far can we go here? Because you know,
- 13:37Speaker 1: it is in critical that they're connected.
- 13:39Speaker 2: For all of us like social media, like setting some
- 13:42Speaker 2: like smart boundaries on the fact that like we want
- 13:46Speaker 2: this connection, but we also like cannot live our lives
- 13:50Speaker 2: behind like looking at screens. It's been such an interesting,
- 13:54Speaker 2: you know, effort to find this balance.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I did a big kind of so media cleanse at
- 14:01Speaker 1: the beginning of this where I went through and just
- 14:03Speaker 1: got read like, as I was scrolling through my my like,
- 14:07Speaker 1: what Instagram is really truly feeding me? Like I'm in
- 14:13Speaker 1: control of this experience? And I let go. I kind
- 14:17Speaker 1: of liked a cleanse. I let go of a lot
- 14:19Speaker 1: of people I followed because I just it didn't make
- 14:23Speaker 1: me feel good. And I think that's really important to
- 14:29Speaker 1: consciously intentionally be in control of our feed and what
- 14:33Speaker 1: we're digesting. I just I rarely do this, but I
- 14:39Speaker 1: just commented on an ad I saw, for example, in
- 14:43Speaker 1: my Twitter feed, and it was a graphic and illustration
- 14:48Speaker 1: of and it said like wanted, and it was like
- 14:51Speaker 1: like wanted, and it was alcohol, and there was a
- 14:54Speaker 1: graphic of a woman with a huge like bloated belly
- 14:57Speaker 1: gluten and it was a different kind of bloated belly,
- 15:01Speaker 1: and then sugar and that was a little different, like
- 15:05Speaker 1: it was depending on what they were eating. That's what
- 15:07Speaker 1: the ad was. And then the fourth image was mommy,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and it showed an image of a woman with this
- 15:14Speaker 1: like sagging belly. Oh, and it was selling fitness. And
- 15:20Speaker 1: that's the kind of outrageous imagery that goes into our
- 15:25Speaker 1: unconscious even if just seeing that gets in there, right
- 15:31Speaker 1: and is such an assault on our like self confidence,
- 15:36Speaker 1: ability to be honest and compassionate in our bodies and
- 15:41Speaker 1: obviously showing like for any new mom to see that
- 15:45Speaker 1: is outrageous, right, And so those are the kinds of
- 15:49Speaker 1: things I think the reason I commented on it on
- 15:51Speaker 1: my Twitter feed was just to give people that awareness,
- 15:54Speaker 1: like if you see something like this, delete it.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Take a moment to.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Know this is not real, this is this is manipulated
- 16:03Speaker 1: and not healthy, Like just kind of even acknowledging versus
- 16:08Speaker 1: just kind of scrolling by it quickly. I think that
- 16:10Speaker 1: that acknowledgment is really important.
- 16:13Speaker 2: I think that oftentimes we like can play a little
- 16:17Speaker 2: bit of the victim, right We're like, oh, I'm just
- 16:19Speaker 2: I'm not feeling good about X or Y, but we
- 16:21Speaker 2: keep scrolling and we don't take ownership over the fact
- 16:24Speaker 2: that we have input as to what we see there.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Just like you're saying.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Yes and just affirming it is a practice of rewiring
- 16:34Speaker 1: your brain. And there's there's studies on that if you
- 16:37Speaker 1: affirm it, if you say it out loud like that
- 16:41Speaker 1: is this is not healthy, and it's imagined like if
- 16:44Speaker 1: you kind of just say that out loud and then
- 16:46Speaker 1: delete right and then you see something that makes you
- 16:50Speaker 1: feel good, Wow, this is true. This makes me feel good.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Just the practice of acknowledging your truth. You know, it's
- 16:58Speaker 1: something I talk to the kids about. Is why I
- 17:00Speaker 1: think it's so important.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Right now, Oh for sure, let's chat then about now,
- 17:05Speaker 2: let me know what builds us up, what we need
- 17:07Speaker 2: to focus on, where we should give our energy. Talk
- 17:11Speaker 2: to me about you know, twenty twenty from a I.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Learned this perspective.
- 17:17Speaker 2: I know that you learned the importance of what we're
- 17:19Speaker 2: taking in what else really hit home with you this year?
- 17:27Speaker 1: I learned that you cannot subtract social connectedness from the
- 17:35Speaker 1: equation of our health and well being, that social connectedness,
- 17:41Speaker 1: physical and mental connectedness act together as a tripod, as
- 17:47Speaker 1: a three legged stool, And how incredibly important it is
- 17:53Speaker 1: to stay unified and intentionally figure out a way to
- 17:59Speaker 1: show up in the world where you're surrounded by community
- 18:04Speaker 1: and people who see you and hear you.
- 18:07Speaker 2: And.
- 18:10Speaker 1: A firm that you belong. I've learned that I'm just
- 18:14Speaker 1: speaking even promise. I've learned that like the just even
- 18:18Speaker 1: like again, like letting go of the people that maybe
- 18:21Speaker 1: didn't serve me in the past and really consciously invite
- 18:26Speaker 1: in people who elevate and inspire me. And then and
- 18:30Speaker 1: then for me as a leader, creating an environment and
- 18:33Speaker 1: an organization that invites that. And I mean, I feel
- 18:39Speaker 1: such a sisterhood with all of our owners. For example,
- 18:43Speaker 1: when we come together, we are unstoppable, you know, And
- 18:49Speaker 1: there's something so powerful in that. And I think the
- 18:53Speaker 1: other thing I've learned is that universally, we all struggle.
- 18:57Speaker 1: It's so easy to feel alone and struggle, and that's
- 19:01Speaker 1: so imagined. I mean, we it is human to struggle,
- 19:05Speaker 1: and because we're all going through this together, I think
- 19:09Speaker 1: that's been a huge recognition for so many people. And
- 19:15Speaker 1: I would say the third thing that I've affirmed and
- 19:18Speaker 1: this has been my life's work, so it's it's just
- 19:21Speaker 1: been beautiful to practice in a new way. But I
- 19:23Speaker 1: love the idea of and truth that whatever it is
- 19:27Speaker 1: we practice, we become. Like my daughter can practice playing
- 19:31Speaker 1: the piano, she becomes a great piano player. We can
- 19:35Speaker 1: practice being at home in our bodies literally and figuratively.
- 19:39Speaker 4: The race is.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Canceled, the wedding's canceled, canceled sadly, you know, the beach vacation,
- 19:44Speaker 1: all the things are canceled right now. And the good
- 19:47Speaker 1: thing about that is we are now exercising to be
- 19:50Speaker 1: present and honest in our bodies and what we need
- 19:53Speaker 1: in the moment versus trying to get ready for something.
- 19:56Speaker 1: And that's a new way of relating to fitness that
- 20:01Speaker 1: we need, and I think is a real gift right now.
- 20:06Speaker 4: It's a real gift, and it is.
- 20:08Speaker 3: A real gift.
- 20:09Speaker 2: And I love what you're saying, Like you practice what
- 20:12Speaker 2: you become like, that's so big, it's so much bigger
- 20:17Speaker 2: than you know, just the pianist or just someone like
- 20:20Speaker 2: I'm more than a runner because I run. Like, let's
- 20:23Speaker 2: talk about practicing who you want to become as a human, right,
- 20:29Speaker 2: like taking this time over the past eight nine months
- 20:33Speaker 2: and reflecting on how we are showing up, how you
- 20:38Speaker 2: have become you know, that leader, that person that welcomes
- 20:43Speaker 2: and invites others and makes them feel safe.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Yeah, it's it's really an an interesting lens to put
- 20:52Speaker 1: blend into fitness.
- 20:53Speaker 4: And that's one.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Thing that we've been doing Bar three for many years,
- 20:58Speaker 1: but now it's like it's next level for us. Is
- 21:03Speaker 1: this idea of combining traditional fitness with mindfulness. You think
- 21:07Speaker 1: of mindfulness, My definition of mindfulness is pain, attention on purpose.
- 21:13Speaker 3: In the moment.
- 21:14Speaker 1: And when you combine that idea with traditional fitness, you
- 21:19Speaker 1: gain body You practice body wisdom, so you practice honoring
- 21:23Speaker 1: what your body needs in the moment while moving. And
- 21:26Speaker 1: when you do that, two things are taken away from
- 21:30Speaker 1: the fitness experience that contribute to why the vast majority
- 21:35Speaker 1: of us struggle with fitness. And the first is pain.
- 21:39Speaker 1: You take away negative pain when you combine traditional fitness
- 21:43Speaker 1: with mindfulness, because what you do is you start to
- 21:46Speaker 1: observe and notice, oh, I have negative joint pain during
- 21:50Speaker 1: this plank.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Let's just say.
- 21:52Speaker 1: And when you notice that and observe it, honestly, it's like, oh,
- 21:55Speaker 1: I need to get out a plank. But I think
- 21:57Speaker 1: our mindset has been around fitness is no, I'm going
- 21:59Speaker 1: to stay plank because I want to get the result,
- 22:02Speaker 1: So I'm going to ignore the joint pain, and then
- 22:05Speaker 1: we anchor fitness to pain. And that's not a good
- 22:07Speaker 1: relationship with fitness. That's why so many people don't do
- 22:10Speaker 1: fitness because I think it's like fifty one percent of
- 22:12Speaker 1: people with injury attribute their injury to exercise to fitness, right,
- 22:17Speaker 1: But it's so much bigger than that, I know, but
- 22:21Speaker 1: think about it. So many people think of it. Like
- 22:23Speaker 1: I don't know about you, Emily, but like if I
- 22:25Speaker 1: jump in a lift and I like tell the lift
- 22:27Speaker 1: driver what I do for a living. If I say
- 22:29Speaker 1: anything with fitness, usually people cringe, Like the vast majority
- 22:32Speaker 1: of people cringe like, ooh, yeah, you're a fitness person.
- 22:35Speaker 1: I'm not one of those. The other is shame, like
- 22:38Speaker 1: they're not working out in a way that's like mindful
- 22:42Speaker 1: and congruent with what your body needs in the moment.
- 22:46Speaker 1: And when you do that, it becomes an expression of
- 22:49Speaker 1: who you are versus like pretending to be a fit person.
- 22:52Speaker 2: And I think that a lot of the time with shame,
- 22:55Speaker 2: it's the people that are so focused on maybe what
- 22:57Speaker 2: they want to lose instead of what they're trying to
- 23:00Speaker 2: gain from their fitness or wellness experience.
- 23:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and again back to that graphic that I was
- 23:09Speaker 1: talking about. Of course we have shame. We are that's
- 23:14Speaker 1: a learned behavior, a learned feeling. We aren't born into
- 23:19Speaker 1: the world with shame in our bodies, but we are
- 23:21Speaker 1: taught to shame our bodies every day because it's a
- 23:25Speaker 1: great way to manipulate someone to buy a product is
- 23:28Speaker 1: by saying, oh, you have that bloated belly. You need
- 23:31Speaker 1: this so that you'll be attractive, worthy, sexy, so that
- 23:36Speaker 1: you will belong. And so we're taught that we're taught shame,
- 23:40Speaker 1: and we're taught that shame is anchored to fitness, and
- 23:43Speaker 1: that fitness will make us have you know, the body
- 23:48Speaker 1: that will finally allow us to be happy. And that's
- 23:52Speaker 1: a myth. It's completely not true. It's imagined and it
- 23:57Speaker 1: doesn't work. It's why so many of us struggle with
- 24:01Speaker 1: being dissatisfied in our bodies. Ninety one percent of women
- 24:04Speaker 1: in North America report body dissatisfaction. The vast majority of
- 24:08Speaker 1: us are not happy in our bodies. That's learned, and
- 24:13Speaker 1: just like I mentioned, whatever it is you practice you become.
- 24:16Speaker 1: We can practice unlearning that story, and we can practice
- 24:21Speaker 1: being honest and compassionate in our bodies. And when we
- 24:24Speaker 1: do that, we're truly empowered.
- 24:27Speaker 4: And that's that's.
- 24:29Speaker 1: What gets me out of bed every day, is kind
- 24:32Speaker 1: of unlearning that.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Whether or not someone you know is actively turning on
- 24:38Speaker 2: Bar three programming, they hear you say that they you know,
- 24:42Speaker 2: they want that they're part of the ninety one percent.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I would, I mean, please, I would say that I'm
- 24:46Speaker 2: part of the ninety one percent. So the question that
- 24:50Speaker 2: comes up is what, like, how can you start that
- 24:55Speaker 2: conversation with yourself?
- 24:58Speaker 1: The first It's a really simple question that I ask myself,
- 25:02Speaker 1: and this is something we do in our studios as well,
- 25:06Speaker 1: is ask yourself. Just take one moment to ask yourself,
- 25:09Speaker 1: what do I need right now? Then press play for
- 25:13Speaker 1: your workout. Whatever it is and honor that and practice
- 25:18Speaker 1: achieving what you need during that workout. And it might change,
- 25:23Speaker 1: like halfway through the workout, it might be something different.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Keep asking yourself, like, as you're doing burpies, what do
- 25:29Speaker 1: I need right now? You know, if you're if the
- 25:32Speaker 1: burpies are giving you what you need, keep going. If
- 25:35Speaker 1: they are counter to what you need, then modify, change
- 25:40Speaker 1: it up, have exercise be a practice of being congruent
- 25:45Speaker 1: with what you need, and that combination is beautiful. When
- 25:49Speaker 1: you are your own best teacher, in partnership with a guide,
- 25:53Speaker 1: an instructor who really knows about alignment and technique and
- 25:56Speaker 1: it's motivational and has a great playlist, you know, that
- 26:00Speaker 1: is when the magic happens. But it truly is a
- 26:02Speaker 1: partnership with your instructor versus just copying what the instructor
- 26:07Speaker 1: is doing or what everybody else is doing in the room.
- 26:10Speaker 4: It's a game changer. It's a total game changer.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I mean personally or professionally either here if you had
- 26:19Speaker 2: to reflect on some of the best advice that you
- 26:22Speaker 2: have been offered over the past eight nine months, what
- 26:25Speaker 2: would you say that it has been?
- 26:29Speaker 1: You know, I think for me, it's been around self
- 26:32Speaker 1: esteem and less advice but more like affirmation. Are We
- 26:43Speaker 1: hired our new COO and president, Bruce Edwards right before
- 26:48Speaker 1: COVID struck, and he has been an incredible leader and
- 26:53Speaker 1: partner for me. And I would say just him reminding
- 26:57Speaker 1: me that my voice matters and to not shy away
- 27:02Speaker 1: from speaking my truth and everything we're talking about on
- 27:06Speaker 1: this podcast, for example, that that matters just as much
- 27:09Speaker 1: as our financials our ability to scale and operate, you know,
- 27:14Speaker 1: it's equally important. And that's always a thing for me
- 27:18Speaker 1: because honestly, I'll go into a meeting and get advice
- 27:22Speaker 1: counter to that, like in so many ways, just like okay, Sadie,
- 27:28Speaker 1: just you know, you kind of just just tame your
- 27:31Speaker 1: part of the meeting and we're the financials are way
- 27:34Speaker 1: more important, you know, Like and just reminding myself, no,
- 27:39Speaker 1: I need to keep speaking up for all these people,
- 27:41Speaker 1: you know, I need to be the voice of this
- 27:44Speaker 1: problem in the fitness industry. And it's really fascinating. I
- 27:51Speaker 1: think I ignored how muted my voice has been over
- 27:55Speaker 1: the years, or I notice more now when people mute
- 27:58Speaker 1: my voice or don't really understand me. And it's just
- 28:03Speaker 1: such a lesson and remembering no, like trust your instinct,
- 28:09Speaker 1: trust what you have to offer, and be courageous and
- 28:13Speaker 1: show up that way. And Bruce has really really been
- 28:17Speaker 1: a cheerleader for me that way, And yeah, I kind
- 28:21Speaker 1: of wish that for every woman, to be honest.
- 28:26Speaker 3: What excites you about the new year?
- 28:31Speaker 4: Anything but twenty.
- 28:32Speaker 3: Twenty both, sister.
- 28:38Speaker 1: I'm really excited to put all this to practice, Like
- 28:41Speaker 1: everything we've learned, whether it's basic human rights and becoming
- 28:46Speaker 1: more attuned to that, or the importance of community and connection,
- 28:51Speaker 1: or the accountability of our own health and well being.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Getting to put everything that we've learned during this era
- 28:59Speaker 1: to work in a more normal economy is what I'm
- 29:02Speaker 1: most excited about.
- 29:04Speaker 2: What I'm most excited about what has been And I'm
- 29:08Speaker 2: going to say, aside from bar three, like something whether
- 29:11Speaker 2: it be like a product or a person that this
- 29:15Speaker 2: year using this thing has helped you stay more sane,
- 29:19Speaker 2: or it's been good for your health or.
- 29:21Speaker 3: Something like that.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Okay, I'm just going to tell you the first thing
- 29:24Speaker 1: that popped into my head. Yeah, Deepak Chopra and Oprah
- 29:28Speaker 1: have a meditation series on Hope and it's beautiful.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I think it's on his website.
- 29:39Speaker 1: It's I think, and I want to say, it's like
- 29:41Speaker 1: twenty one days and it starts with Oprah talking about
- 29:45Speaker 1: a concept, whether it be like forgiveness, and her take
- 29:49Speaker 1: on forgiveness and what she's learned about it, and then
- 29:52Speaker 1: Deepak deepens the idea and then gives you a mantra
- 29:57Speaker 1: around it, and then it's a guided meditation to music
- 30:01Speaker 1: around that theme.
- 30:02Speaker 4: It's really cool. Yeah, it's really cool.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Final question for you here, Sadie, You right now have
- 30:09Speaker 2: the opportunity to give the Sadie Lincoln back in April
- 30:15Speaker 2: a piece of advice. When she's looking at her husband
- 30:18Speaker 2: and co founder and she is saying, are we going
- 30:21Speaker 2: to make it? You get to offer her a piece
- 30:23Speaker 2: of advice. What do you tell her? Looking back on
- 30:25Speaker 2: it now?
- 30:29Speaker 1: I think I would just tell her because the experience
- 30:32Speaker 1: was so in so many ways beautiful, and I would
- 30:36Speaker 1: just remind her that when you lean into struggle and
- 30:44Speaker 1: really hard times with hope and a growth mindset, something
- 30:52Speaker 1: really beautiful is on the other side. And just to
- 30:55Speaker 1: trust that, lean into struggle, constraint and even despair with
- 31:03Speaker 1: an openness to learning, and that's you know, all we
- 31:09Speaker 1: can really do and and when we do that, that's
- 31:11Speaker 1: when change happens. That's an innovation happens. So that's what
- 31:15Speaker 1: I would remind her.
- 31:17Speaker 3: I am so happy that we got to have this chat.
- 31:21Speaker 2: I love a woman with a growth mindset philosophy, and
- 31:24Speaker 2: I appreciate you so so much, Sadie.
- 31:28Speaker 1: I appreciate you and the inspiration and work you do
- 31:31Speaker 1: in the world so much.
- 31:32Speaker 3: Emily.
- 31:32Speaker 4: This podcast is amazing.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 31:35Speaker 2: How do the hurdlers keep up with you? How do
- 31:38Speaker 2: they keep up with bar three? Give me some details.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Sure, we have a challenge coming up in January and February.
- 31:46Speaker 1: That's that everyone can check out if you go to

- 32:15Speaker 1: don't know if you have to go three years ago.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Love, it's my fave.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Do you use that as you do?
- 32:22Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 32:22Speaker 3: Oh, I'm a sucker. I mean, obviously I'm a sucker
- 32:24Speaker 3: for it, but.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and it's so it's one of those things.
- 32:28Speaker 1: It's like you give someone a gift and I just
- 32:29Speaker 1: want to make sure you know, like it wasn't wasted
- 32:31Speaker 1: on me, and I'm gifting it to my whole team
- 32:33Speaker 1: this year, so, oh my godness, I had to let
- 32:37Speaker 1: you know, Oh my god.
- 32:39Speaker 2: First of all, I'm sure if the team from Athletic
- 32:40Speaker 2: Greens is listening to this, they're going to totally geek out.
- 32:42Speaker 3: But that makes me so happy.
- 32:44Speaker 2: I Mean, the thing is, and I'm sure that you
- 32:46Speaker 2: feel this way as well, like whenever you talk about
- 32:49Speaker 2: something like you just want to make sure that people
- 32:51Speaker 2: know that it's something that like you actually use. And
- 32:54Speaker 2: that's how I feel about all the sponsors I have
- 32:56Speaker 2: on Hurdle, but especially Athletic Greens because I literally drink
- 32:59Speaker 2: it every single morning.
- 33:01Speaker 1: Yeah, it's awesome. I sneak get in my kids smoothies
- 33:04Speaker 1: and they love it too, So it's a sneak.
- 33:07Speaker 3: It's a sneak attack. I love that.
