- 0:05Welcome to The Hypnotist, the show that gives you inside
- 0:09access to cutting edge hypnosis with real clients facing
- 0:12genuine. Issues.
- 0:13Brought to you by The Hypnotherapist, Demanded by
- 0:16celebrities, CEOs and even royalty, Adam Cox.
- 0:20These recordings took place live from Adam Smith in London's
- 0:24world famous Harley Street. So get yourself comfortable and
- 0:31enjoy today's episode of The Hypnotist.
- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. And in this session of the
- 0:42hypnotist, you're going to be listening to a hypnosis session
- 0:45all about intrusive thoughts. And I was working with a.
- 0:48Client that had an event that had made them think about stuff
- 0:53in a really emotive way. And since that point, every
- 0:57thought that related to their relationship felt like a really
- 1:00high stakes, really serious thought.
- 1:02And they also felt that they had to do something about that,
- 1:06whereas in the past they would think about things and it
- 1:08wouldn't really be that much of a big deal.
- 1:11So in this particular session, you're going to hear various
- 1:13metaphors from something called Acceptance and Commitment
- 1:16Therapy. And that's.
- 1:18Fused within a hypnosis session to really give them a feeling of
- 1:22detaching from the thoughts and suggestions about considering
- 1:26these thoughts to be low stakes. Rather.
- 1:28Than high stakes, If you have intrusive thoughts and it really
- 1:33seems to put you in a spiral and things seems to amplify and
- 1:38really exaggerate and catastrophize, then I think
- 1:40you'll get some value from this session.
- 1:42Just be aware of course that it was created for an individual
- 1:45and some of the suggestions might be perfect for them and
- 1:47not quite right for you. But if you do like the idea of
- 1:50something more bespoke, there will be a link in the
- 1:53description where you can get a free 30 minute consultation call
- 1:56to discuss me being your hypnotherapist and then we can
- 1:59actually do a session together. For now, though, find a quiet,
- 2:02comfortable place where you won't be disturbed.
- 2:04Relax and enjoy the session. Take a deep breath in, and as
- 2:35you breathe in, breathe in that long, calm, relaxing breath.
- 2:41And as you exhale, just feel a wonderful feeling of release, as
- 2:53if any tension, stress or worries are leaving your body in
- 3:00that outward breath. Breathing in relaxation and
- 3:08exhaling tension, each breath taking you deeper and deeper.
- 3:18Relaxed. And I want you to think.
- 3:25Think of that part of your mind responsible for being vigilant,
- 3:34being on edge. Maybe you could imagine a
- 3:41bodyguard on high alert or a guard dog expecting a problem,
- 3:50but as you breathe in that resourceful relaxation, send a
- 3:56message that it's time to stand down.
- 4:04They don't need to be on high alert.
- 4:08There is no threat. There is No Fear, there is no
- 4:14danger, so for now they can just go off duty and notice when it
- 4:29feels like they're no longer with anything they have to do or
- 4:38need to do. It's a signal to yourself that
- 4:45everything is manageable now, and I want you to feel that
- 4:55sensation in your body of being able to cope easily, that
- 5:05feeling that everything will be all right, everything is
- 5:13manageable, everything will be fine.
- 5:25So as you breathe in and breathe out on every outward breath,
- 5:30just imagine tension leaving your body and look for clues in
- 5:36your body, like the tiny muscles in your forehead relaxing,
- 5:43shoulders loosening, jaw releasing any tension until your
- 5:52body feels just a little lighter, a little freer.
- 6:00As your mind opens up, becoming more receptive and curious.
- 6:11And I wonder if you can use the power of your imagination to
- 6:18imagine that you are sitting by a quiet stream somewhere in
- 6:22nature. And maybe you could imagine
- 6:26sunlight flickering through the leaves, and you notice the
- 6:33gentle sound of water flowing. And on this stream you notice
- 6:43leaves drifting by, one after another, slowly carried along by
- 6:52the current. And I'd like you to place a
- 6:56thought, any thought at all, onto a leaf and watch it as it
- 7:04drifts away without effort, without resistance.
- 7:14That you don't need to do anything with that leaf.
- 7:18You don't need to distract yourself from it.
- 7:23You don't need to submerge the leaf underwater.
- 7:28Just allow it to float on by. And then imagine another thought
- 7:36comes, and just imagine picking it out of your head, placing it
- 7:42on the leaf. And again it floats away.
- 7:49And some leaves drift quickly and some more slowly, but all of
- 7:58them keep moving. And as you notice this, you
- 8:06realise that thoughts can come and go without you needing to
- 8:13hold them, fight them or chase them.
- 8:18And then I want you to imagine there by the stream, there's an
- 8:28old fashioned radio. And you might imagine that your
- 8:35mind is like a radio station on that old radio, and sometimes it
- 8:44plays music you enjoy and other times static, noise or a genre
- 8:52of music you don't really like. You don't have to be annoyed.
- 9:02The radio can just play in the background while you go about
- 9:07your life connected to what matters most, and you don't have
- 9:19to turn it off. You can choose to have it
- 9:24playing while your attention is elsewhere and suddenly by that
- 9:32stream, a bus turns up to take you somewhere.
- 9:42And I want you to imagine that the bus driver, instead of
- 9:48asking for your ticket, offers if you would like to drive the
- 9:53bus. And just imagine you're driving
- 9:58that bus in the direction of what you value most in your
- 10:05future. Consider yourself driving
- 10:09towards love, connection, playfulness and intimacy.
- 10:18And sometimes there's noisy passengers that climb aboard
- 10:23that bus. Doubts, worries, what ifs.
- 10:32And they may shout and they may distract, but only you can steer
- 10:38the bus. They can try and distract,
- 10:46provoke, or perhaps just be there making noise, but it
- 10:57doesn't change the direction that you're driving towards.
- 11:04They cannot steer the bus, only you can.
- 11:09And the more you keep driving towards where you want to go,
- 11:15the less power those passengers really have.
- 11:23And you may imagine leaving that bus.
- 11:31And I want you to imagine seeing a monster, a cartoon monster,
- 11:41perhaps in the style of The Simpsons cartoon, you know, the
- 11:47style of animation. And imagine that monster is
- 11:53holding a rope. And for a while, it feels like
- 11:58you've been on the other end of that rope, pulling against a
- 12:04monster of worry, straining, exhausting yourself, believing
- 12:16you must win. And I wonder how long, how many
- 12:23weeks or months you've been playing that tug of war with
- 12:27that monster. But as you let go of the rope,
- 12:34you realize that you're free. The monster may still be there,
- 12:42but now it's just holding a rope, and that rope is no longer
- 12:48connected to you. So without your grip, your
- 12:54effort, your focus, your energy, that monster loses its pull over
- 13:01you. And in this calm, resourceful
- 13:09state, you can remember the feelings of love, attraction or
- 13:16arousal can flow naturally when there is no pressure, no test to
- 13:25pass. And I want you to think of the
- 13:31person you love the most and feel a connection between you
- 13:37and them. And that connection is also
- 13:44connected to life and with yourself.
- 13:51And every now and then a thought will try and break that
- 13:56connection, but it can only do it if you allow it to happen.
- 14:06I want you to imagine drifting back to perhaps 5 or 6 months
- 14:09ago and to feel how you felt back then.
- 14:16Feel that connection and feel that when thoughts and worries
- 14:21came up, it kind of felt that they were no big deal, that it
- 14:29will be all right. That even if a challenge comes
- 14:34up, I want you to get that feeling, that sensation that
- 14:41it's a piece of piss to just deal with that issue as you
- 14:47consider yourself dialling everything down, leaving a high
- 14:53stakes environment to a low stakes environment.
- 15:02I want you to imagine if you were in a casino and your entire
- 15:07life savings was dependent on one spin of the roulette wheel.
- 15:17That would feel that whatever happens is so important, but if
- 15:24it was a tiny amount, no big deal.
- 15:29Even if it doesn't land on the number you want, it will be all
- 15:33right. And I want you to think for a
- 15:37while now that you've been treating something like it's a
- 15:42high stakes environment. And I want you to feel that you
- 15:47are reducing your stake. Because actually, when you
- 15:52reduce the stake, the emotional investment in the thought, the
- 15:58idea, the memory, it will be all right, it will be manageable.
- 16:10Everything is no big deal. And maybe you can recall times
- 16:18in your past when you felt that way, when a thought was just a
- 16:23thought, when it was no big deal, it would pass like a cloud
- 16:31in the sky. And I want you to feel that you
- 16:35are reawakening all of those neural pathways and taking them
- 16:46all the way into the present. So you don't have to distract
- 16:53yourself or suppress a thought. You can notice thought.
- 17:01Thank you for showing up. Extract the wisdom, the inside
- 17:06if there is any, and let it drift away while you return to
- 17:12living. And I wonder if you could
- 17:19imagine seeing a short movie on a screen about how you've been
- 17:28these last few months on edge, hyper vigilant, spiraling.
- 17:37And I want you to see you on that screen like you're a
- 17:39cartoon character, maybe with exaggerated features or yellow
- 17:46skin. But I want you to play this
- 17:51short summary of what it's been like and then imagine watching
- 17:57it backwards in reverse, like everything's happening
- 18:03backwards. Just rewind it as I go.
- 18:08You rewind it all and just imagine what that would look
- 18:13like if you rewound everything to before it all started.
- 18:23Just rewind it, seeing yourself do everything backwards, all the
- 18:29worrying in reverse, the thinking in reverse, see it all
- 18:36happening backwards, and then imagine stepping into the end of
- 18:45that movie and feeling what it would feel like of three or four
- 18:51months worth of worry all happening backwards.
- 19:02When you've got to the beginning, jump back to the end
- 19:04and just rewind it again, thinking backwards, walking
- 19:08backwards, moving backwards. And then imagine doing it one
- 19:19more time, but going all the way back to when you felt absolutely
- 19:24fine, that everything would be all right, that these thoughts
- 19:31were no big deal. So in the end of that movie, and
- 19:38find yourself back in your body maybe six months ago, and
- 19:43imagine having the same thought and feeling that this is
- 19:47nothing. Nothing to do, nothing to think
- 19:52about. Consider it the opposite of
- 19:56spiralling insignificance. And if your unconscious feels
- 20:03that you've messed up a current pattern and reactivated a
- 20:08previous pattern, let me know by nodding your head.
- 20:22And let's reawaken it even more as you imagine two or three days
- 20:28from now, having a thought, the kind of thought that may have
- 20:33spiraled you in the past and now it almost makes you smile.
- 20:40It's so low stakes, it's a piece of piss.
- 20:44It's no big deal. It will be fine and allow it to
- 20:50pass like a leaf on a stream. And if it feels like that's what
- 20:58your future is, that even if the thought does come up, it has no
- 21:08significance over you anymore, let me know by nodding your head
- 21:16and let's test it out. One month forwards now, one
- 21:21month from now, imagine having an intrusive thought about a
- 21:28relationship or a big event. Allow the thought to come up and
- 21:40allow it to pass. No big deal.
- 21:45Nothing to do, nothing to dwell on, no one to talk to.
- 21:53No big deal. And imagine it perhaps one or
- 22:04two days before a wedding, and just imagine there's a thought
- 22:16of a doubt. Call it a second thought, and
- 22:23just allow it to pop up in your mind and float away.
- 22:33Because there's a part of you that already knows that you've
- 22:35been feeding these thoughts. You've been feeding these
- 22:39thoughts emotions, and that's what's made them bigger and more
- 22:45frequent. But I want you to feel that you
- 22:49can starve these thoughts of your attention and your emotion.
- 22:56You can have a thought and you can allow it to pass and
- 23:02everything will be all right. And if you could imagine
- 23:10something like that, where not only does it not spiral, but it
- 23:18hardly becomes a blip on your radar.
- 23:21Let me know about nodding your head.
- 23:24That's it. And then imagine going back to
- 23:32that stream, realizing that you've been playing a tug of war
- 23:40with a monster, pouring petrol on a frame.
- 23:48You've been feeding thoughts to make them bigger and treating it
- 23:54like it's a high stakes casino. But now all of those things are
- 24:01undone. It's low stakes, the monster has
- 24:07the rope by itself, the stream is carrying away your thoughts,
- 24:16they're on the leaves and you are driving your bus in the
- 24:23direction that you want to take it.
- 24:31It's time to leave this place realizing that you've been on a
- 24:36journey in your imagination, a journey of thoughts within
- 24:40thoughts, ideas within ideas, and dreams within dreams.
- 24:46But it's time to return now to the here and the now as I count
- 24:51from 1:00 to 10:00 to awaken you.
- 24:58Starting to count 123 Waking up 456.
- 25:04More alert 7-8 Open your eyes. Open your eyes 910.
- 25:10Wide awake, Wide awake. Wide awake.
