- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyon. This episode number two and twenty four,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and today in the podcast, we're talking about the joys
- 0:22Speaker 1: and challenges and lessons learned and hopes and dreams and
- 0:26Speaker 1: fears of raising an outdoor kid. All right, welcome to
- 0:46Speaker 1: the Wired to Hunt podcast, brought to you by Onyx.
- 0:49Speaker 1: And today in the show, before we do anything else,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I want to read you a few reviews of the
- 0:56Speaker 1: Wired Hunt podcast. Ready for this, Dan, There there are.
- 1:04Speaker 1: There are over one thousand, eight hundred five star reviews
- 1:08Speaker 1: of this podcast. I'm proud to say. But yeah, but
- 1:11Speaker 1: we've got a couple of doozyes thrown in there too
- 1:13Speaker 1: that I wanted to share. For for example, quote enough
- 1:19Speaker 1: of the family talk. If I wanted to learn how
- 1:21Speaker 1: to be a father, I listened to a different podcast
- 1:24Speaker 1: and end quote. Or or how about this one quote?
- 1:28Speaker 1: It would be five stars. But the obnoxious guy won't
- 1:31Speaker 1: shut up about his kids, so annoying. Oh man, this
- 1:37Speaker 1: is just building my confidence. These are these are just
- 1:42Speaker 1: a few of the rave reviews that we've gotten about
- 1:44Speaker 1: our parenting related talks, Dann. So since people are asking
- 1:49Speaker 1: for it, I thought we'd doubled down on the family talk.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Good idea, right, Oh yeah, I can't wait till these
- 1:59Speaker 1: people they're they're so excited. Here's the Wired podcast. It's
- 2:04Speaker 1: on my phone. It's about freaking kids. Are you know
- 2:09Speaker 1: one star review? Now? Are those one star reviews? I
- 2:13Speaker 1: think there were two star reviews, those two we have it.
- 2:16Speaker 1: We haven't done our job then, yeah. Yeah, But thankfully, thankfully,
- 2:20Speaker 1: there's been actually a lot more positive feedback about about
- 2:24Speaker 1: these kinds of talks in our urbs sessions where we
- 2:26Speaker 1: kind of share our everyday life stories and struggles and whatnot.
- 2:31Speaker 1: And um, for a long time it was just you
- 2:33Speaker 1: with the kids. But now I've got a little bundle
- 2:36Speaker 1: of joy and um that's got me thinking about all
- 2:38Speaker 1: this kind of stuff too, And especially most recently here,
- 2:42Speaker 1: I've been out on this several week excursion with my
- 2:45Speaker 1: little boy out west. That's got me thinking more and
- 2:47Speaker 1: more about introducing our kids to the outdoors and stuff
- 2:50Speaker 1: like that. So I had this idea, Dan, and in
- 2:53Speaker 1: the second here, I'm gonna bring in another friend of
- 2:54Speaker 1: mine who's gonna be able to join us talk about
- 2:56Speaker 1: this too. But I thought we could just talk about
- 2:58Speaker 1: this whole idea of raising an outdoor kid, and um,
- 3:02Speaker 1: talking through our experiences so far, more so your experiences
- 3:05Speaker 1: in mind, since I'm really new into it. And then
- 3:08Speaker 1: my friend Andy Bradley is going to join us. He
- 3:10Speaker 1: has a seven year old and a nine year old boy. UM,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and I think I think this is fair to say
- 3:16Speaker 1: that all three of us want our kids to grow up,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you know, being exposed to the outdoors. UM, hopefully having
- 3:22Speaker 1: an interest in something like hunting or fishing or some
- 3:26Speaker 1: of the other outdoor things we like to do. I
- 3:28Speaker 1: know that's something that's definitely high on my on my
- 3:31Speaker 1: list of of hopes and dreams that ever it's going
- 3:33Speaker 1: to be getting into that stuff. So so I thought
- 3:35Speaker 1: we could just kind of talk through all that kind
- 3:36Speaker 1: of stuff, what we've been doing so far, what we've learned.
- 3:39Speaker 1: Maybe if you were, Andy, have any other advice for
- 3:41Speaker 1: me since I've got the youngest. Um. It's funny I
- 3:44Speaker 1: told my wife about this idea, and she said, why,
- 3:47Speaker 1: I don't think you guys are terribly qualified because none
- 3:50Speaker 1: of you have successfully converted a child to a to
- 3:53Speaker 1: an official adult Hunter or anything like that. So she's like,
- 3:56Speaker 1: you don't have much, you have much to stand by,
- 3:59Speaker 1: but for whatever it's worth, we're going to share our perspectives.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I guess from where we are. Um, so I'm five
- 4:04Speaker 1: and a half months in your how old's avant dans
- 4:08Speaker 1: like five and a half five and a half A right,
- 4:09Speaker 1: so you're five and a half with three kids, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: Andy's nine years in with two kids. So we can
- 4:15Speaker 1: talk about the young child experiences and then you can
- 4:18Speaker 1: come back to this podcast ten years from now and
- 4:20Speaker 1: we will tell you about what it's like to have
- 4:22Speaker 1: a teenage Hunter, hopefully like um. So, yeah, that's us thinking,
- 4:28Speaker 1: dan Um. Before we do all that, though, I do
- 4:32Speaker 1: think we need to take a little bit of time
- 4:34Speaker 1: for our pregame show like we usually do, but instead
- 4:37Speaker 1: of a kid related pregame show like so many of
- 4:39Speaker 1: them are. Do you have anything worth talking about this
- 4:42Speaker 1: non kid related today? Well? I guess I do, but
- 4:47Speaker 1: I was hoping for some kind of grand announcement like
- 4:51Speaker 1: like congratulations, Dan, am I allowed to do that. I
- 4:56Speaker 1: don't know if I don't know, if I don't know,
- 4:57Speaker 1: if you wanted to do it. Okay, if I can
- 4:59Speaker 1: do it, then then yes, you can do it. This
- 5:02Speaker 1: has been decades in the making, ladies and gentlemen. This
- 5:08Speaker 1: man has come from the bottom to the top. He
- 5:11Speaker 1: is grinded and worked and slaved over his computer and
- 5:18Speaker 1: his laptop and his desk. He has posted notes strewn
- 5:21Speaker 1: all over across his computer, monitors, his desktop, his cubicle walls,
- 5:26Speaker 1: everything to inspire him to be what he is now,
- 5:30Speaker 1: which is one of the leaders in the hunting community
- 5:34Speaker 1: and the white tail space as a communicator, as a podcaster.
- 5:39Speaker 1: It is my privilege to announce to you that Dan
- 5:43Speaker 1: nine fingers Johnson was named the two thousand eighteen Quality
- 5:48Speaker 1: Dear Management Association Communicator of the Year. Congrats, dude, Yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 1: I appreciate that, man, I appreciate that. Was that was
- 5:57Speaker 1: that was that announcement up to par. It is it's
- 6:00Speaker 1: up to par and uh if you did, proud of you,
- 6:05Speaker 1: if you did that announcement off the top of your head.
- 6:07Speaker 1: That was really good. By the way. That was all
- 6:09Speaker 1: ed lib Man just came to me, just came to me.
- 6:11Speaker 1: But as this is and this is the first and
- 6:16Speaker 1: only podcast in the world to be hosted by two
- 6:21Speaker 1: Communicator of the Year. There, I'm just following your footsteps, buddy.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Well you're doing you're doing awesome stuff, man, so well deserved.
- 6:29Speaker 1: It's been it's been awesome to see what you're doing
- 6:31Speaker 1: with nine Finger Chronicles and the podcasts and Sportsman's Nation
- 6:35Speaker 1: and giving back to qt May and two percent for
- 6:38Speaker 1: Conservation and all the things you're doing to make sure
- 6:41Speaker 1: that that, um, you know, that giving back to the
- 6:44Speaker 1: resources top of mind, and that's something that we've talked
- 6:47Speaker 1: a lot about here. But it's been just as a
- 6:50Speaker 1: friend that kind of watching from afar um without getting
- 6:52Speaker 1: too cheesy, it is a it's a proud friend, proud
- 6:56Speaker 1: proud moments. So keep up the good work, man. I'm
- 6:59Speaker 1: excited for you. I appreciate that, and you know, I
- 7:03Speaker 1: do have to say that I owe you a little
- 7:04Speaker 1: bit of thanks as well, because you know, I was
- 7:07Speaker 1: in a spot when when you started this podcast and
- 7:10Speaker 1: when you said, hey, Dan, uh you want to be
- 7:13Speaker 1: my co host? And I said, yes, let's do that,
- 7:15Speaker 1: and then I kind of got I was in kind
- 7:18Speaker 1: of a low spot, not knowing if I wanted to
- 7:21Speaker 1: do anything in the hunting media space anymore. Uh, just
- 7:26Speaker 1: kind of sitting in a state of idle. An idle state,
- 7:30Speaker 1: I guess. And then when I started the podcast with
- 7:34Speaker 1: you here as the co host, I felt like I
- 7:36Speaker 1: got some you know, some rejuvenation into it. So I had,
- 7:40Speaker 1: you know, I owe maybe you were the little snowball
- 7:43Speaker 1: at the top that pushed down the mountain and turned
- 7:46Speaker 1: into a big snowball, you know, down the ways. But
- 7:49Speaker 1: so I owe you a thanks as well many you
- 7:52Speaker 1: are welcome, and um, if you could please refer to
- 7:54Speaker 1: me from now on as the little snowball for the
- 7:56Speaker 1: rest of our relationship. I appreciate that there's my little snowball,
- 8:02Speaker 1: but can't you rubbed the top of my head? Give me?
- 8:07Speaker 1: That's so cool though, man, Um, it's a bummer that
- 8:09Speaker 1: you're not down there in New Orleans like we were
- 8:11Speaker 1: last year. That would have been great if we could
- 8:12Speaker 1: have been there for the announcement. Um. Yeah, but we
- 8:16Speaker 1: got further representing us down there. I wish I don't
- 8:19Speaker 1: know if I guess this is coming out after that
- 8:22Speaker 1: will happen, um, but I wish we could have had
- 8:24Speaker 1: further go up on stage and accept the award for
- 8:26Speaker 1: you and Lindsay Thomas Jr. He's the director of communications
- 8:32Speaker 1: for the Quality Deer Management Association, and I asked him, Uh,
- 8:36Speaker 1: is there anybody that I need to pick to go
- 8:39Speaker 1: and accept the word on my behalf? And I wanted
- 8:42Speaker 1: to have further go and do it with maybe like
- 8:44Speaker 1: a cardboard cutout of me there. It just it happened
- 8:49Speaker 1: all so fast, and I didn't find out until last week,
- 8:52Speaker 1: and unfortunately, just with my schedule, UM and the family,
- 8:56Speaker 1: I wasn't able to make the trip down there, which sucks.
- 8:59Speaker 1: But uh, you know, I'll wrap the qd M a
- 9:02Speaker 1: proud regardless. Yeah. Man, that's awesome, great organization, great people
- 9:06Speaker 1: involved with it, and um lucky we've got some people
- 9:09Speaker 1: like you that are helping spread the good word and
- 9:12Speaker 1: good stuff up in the future. So that's exciting. Anything else,
- 9:18Speaker 1: I mean, all my news as far as my life
- 9:20Speaker 1: is just kids related. Now. I've been out doing this
- 9:23Speaker 1: Montana adventure and we can talk about that once Andy
- 9:25Speaker 1: joins us. Well, that's what I wanna talk to you about.
- 9:28Speaker 1: So your wife posted a picture of you changing a
- 9:32Speaker 1: car tire and you guys were sitting there. It's like,
- 9:35Speaker 1: but but the thing about it it was, here's a
- 9:37Speaker 1: picture of you changing a car tire, but in the
- 9:40Speaker 1: background was just this beautiful mountainscape right, just this gorgeous,
- 9:46Speaker 1: gorgeous view, and it's like, uh, freaking car tires. My
- 9:50Speaker 1: day sucks. Boo. Look at me. I'm just like And
- 9:53Speaker 1: as I'm sitting in this cubicle smelling the person behind
- 9:58Speaker 1: me is like livering Neians for lunch. I just was like,
- 10:02Speaker 1: I'd rather change a car tire there every day for
- 10:05Speaker 1: the rest of my life than sit in this cubicle
- 10:09Speaker 1: one more day. Yeah, you're right, I can't complain too much.
- 10:13Speaker 1: But I'm just the least handy person. And I think
- 10:15Speaker 1: I've mentioned this before, So even changing a car tire
- 10:18Speaker 1: was a very intendating proposition at the moment. And it
- 10:22Speaker 1: was like we were just about to head up for
- 10:23Speaker 1: the evening to go. We had plans this nice night
- 10:26Speaker 1: in Yellowstone National Park. We're gonna go in there, We're
- 10:29Speaker 1: gonna have like a nice hike. I was gonna go
- 10:32Speaker 1: fish for a little bit. We're gonna go get dinner
- 10:33Speaker 1: in this place just outside of the park and drive
- 10:36Speaker 1: through this valley and look at Buffalo and all that
- 10:38Speaker 1: kind of fun stuff and um, and then yeah, we
- 10:41Speaker 1: we loaded up the car where we got ever in
- 10:42Speaker 1: the car seat. We're about to pull out, and I
- 10:44Speaker 1: turned on the car and then the low tire pressure
- 10:47Speaker 1: gage was flashing. I'm like, what, I look back there
- 10:50Speaker 1: in that back right tira is flat. But I had
- 10:53Speaker 1: like a thirty second like meltdown where I just like
- 10:55Speaker 1: put my head down and just stare at the ground
- 10:57Speaker 1: for like thirty seconds, taking deep breaths, and said, all right,
- 11:00Speaker 1: you just need to fix it. Go get the tire
- 11:02Speaker 1: replaced and we'll get back to the plan. And uh
- 11:06Speaker 1: was able to do that, and that the tire shop
- 11:08Speaker 1: about twenty minutes away was able to They had to
- 11:10Speaker 1: replace all my tires. Actually, um, which is a bummer,
- 11:14Speaker 1: totally blew out the one. These are crazy batter roads
- 11:16Speaker 1: out here, and that just totally ruptured one. So had
- 11:19Speaker 1: to get on the tires. But we got everything done
- 11:21Speaker 1: in time to still get out for our evening plans.
- 11:23Speaker 1: They're a little rushed, but we still got out, so
- 11:27Speaker 1: it's Uh. These trips are always a little challenging just
- 11:30Speaker 1: from you just don't know what's going to happen when
- 11:33Speaker 1: you're on the road for so long, driving all over
- 11:35Speaker 1: the place and pulling this tin can of a camper
- 11:39Speaker 1: all over they're The awning ripped again earlier this week
- 11:43Speaker 1: in a wind storm. I forgot to put the awning
- 11:45Speaker 1: down and we went out to go look at some
- 11:47Speaker 1: places and came back and the awning was ripped, so
- 11:50Speaker 1: duct taped that. Um so kind of just part of
- 11:54Speaker 1: for the course. Now. I don't know if we're gonna
- 11:56Speaker 1: talk about this in the upcoming podcast, but how is
- 12:00Speaker 1: met transitioned from being a stay at home baby to
- 12:03Speaker 1: a baby on the go. Everett is doing very good.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I say Emmett, You said Emmett, but it's Everett Everett.
- 12:10Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I got a buddy's friends name in it.
- 12:13Speaker 1: That happens to the best listening. But he's he's doing
- 12:15Speaker 1: really good. And I'll definitely share a whole bunch more
- 12:18Speaker 1: about what that transition has been like. But knock on wood,
- 12:21Speaker 1: so far, I've been We've been very lucky. So it
- 12:25Speaker 1: looks like we've got on the road baby, which has
- 12:28Speaker 1: been cool. We sometimes just like kind of pinch ourselves,
- 12:30Speaker 1: like how do we get so lucky that we have
- 12:32Speaker 1: a kid that's like so adaptable to our kind of
- 12:34Speaker 1: weird lifestyle. Um So, I do we we keep on
- 12:38Speaker 1: like telling ourselves, all right, the next one, we're not
- 12:40Speaker 1: gonna we can't expect the next one to be like this,
- 12:42Speaker 1: so you should. Yeah, we're just gonna enjoy this and
- 12:46Speaker 1: prepare ourselves for more difficulties with with the next one.
- 12:50Speaker 1: But so far, so good. So I guess now that
- 12:55Speaker 1: we're on the kid topic, should we should we hit
- 12:57Speaker 1: time out really fast and get Andy in here and
- 13:00Speaker 1: then just dive into this full steam. Yeah, this is
- 13:03Speaker 1: a perfect, perfect transition. All right, Let's take a quick
- 13:06Speaker 1: break and then we'll get Andy in the line. All right.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Before we do that, though, we need to take a
- 13:11Speaker 1: quick break to thank our partners at White Tailed Properties.
- 13:14Speaker 1: And today our producer Spencer new Heart is checking in
- 13:17Speaker 1: with a White Tailed Properties land specialist to talk about
- 13:19Speaker 1: summer food plots. This week with White Tailed Properties, we
- 13:24Speaker 1: are joined by Tom James did land Specialists out of Indiana,
- 13:27Speaker 1: and Tom has some advice for those who had intentions
- 13:30Speaker 1: of putting in a food plot but still haven't gotten
- 13:32Speaker 1: around to it at this point in time mids Alive
- 13:37Speaker 1: going forward, I would say the best plan would be
- 13:39Speaker 1: a strategized and plan for in August planning. Here in
- 13:43Speaker 1: the Midwest. By the time you get to mid July,
- 13:46Speaker 1: the only thing you see going in the ground is
- 13:48Speaker 1: double crop where a farmer will cut when are weed
- 13:51Speaker 1: oft and go back in and drill soylbeans, and they
- 13:53Speaker 1: can do that successfully. As far as food plot guys go,
- 13:56Speaker 1: we're just looking at a really drowny, hot, stressful time
- 13:59Speaker 1: at this season. But you're only a month away from
- 14:02Speaker 1: prime time fall planning gates, which is mid all August
- 14:05Speaker 1: all the way through mid September here in the Midwest.
- 14:08Speaker 1: So my best advice for anybody would be just to
- 14:10Speaker 1: go ahead and plan on mowing your field, getting the
- 14:14Speaker 1: existing vegetation sprained and burned down with round up, and
- 14:18Speaker 1: and maybe do a soil test, knowing what your soil
- 14:20Speaker 1: amenities are gonna need. But just be geared up and
- 14:23Speaker 1: planning ahead for killing crops, excuse me, killing competitive vegetation.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Had your seat selections done and ready to rock and
- 14:31Speaker 1: roll in about three or four weeks. If you'd like
- 14:34Speaker 1: to learn more and to see the properties that time
- 14:37Speaker 1: currently has listed for sale, visit White Tailed Properties dot com.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Backslash James that's j A. M. E. S All right,
- 14:47Speaker 1: so we're back and with us, is my buddy, Andy Bradley,
- 14:51Speaker 1: you've been on the podcast before. I think I'm one
- 14:53Speaker 1: of our shed hunting episodes, right, didn't you. Yeah? So
- 14:59Speaker 1: that not last or a year before. Yeah, I always
- 15:01Speaker 1: shed camp. I think you showed up just after Dan
- 15:05Speaker 1: had to leave to do kids stuff, Isn't that right? Dan?
- 15:08Speaker 1: I think you would believe early I got I had
- 15:11Speaker 1: a window to shed hunt. I shed hunted in that window,
- 15:14Speaker 1: and I made it back before that window closed. So
- 15:17Speaker 1: this perfectly ties into the top of good discussion then.
- 15:21Speaker 1: And uh, just before we pulled you in, Andy, we
- 15:23Speaker 1: were just talking a little bit about um, you know
- 15:25Speaker 1: how I've been out here with Everett and the family,
- 15:28Speaker 1: trying to do some camping and hiking with him, UM,
- 15:31Speaker 1: and I figured you'd be a good guy to add
- 15:33Speaker 1: to this though if we as we talk about this
- 15:35Speaker 1: whole idea of raising an outdoor kid. Because of all
- 15:38Speaker 1: the of all my friends I have children, I've always
- 15:40Speaker 1: kind of looked at you and Becca as having like
- 15:43Speaker 1: really done a good job raising your boys and like
- 15:45Speaker 1: doing neat things with them outdoors. I'd love seeing all
- 15:48Speaker 1: the different things you've done with um with the boys.
- 15:51Speaker 1: So I kind of want to start with you, Andy,
- 15:54Speaker 1: I'm just kind of curious, like, what what was it
- 15:57Speaker 1: like when you began, you know, when the boys were
- 16:00Speaker 1: really young? I mean, how do you begin this or
- 16:02Speaker 1: what was your thought process? Because like for me right now,
- 16:04Speaker 1: I'm so eager and like I so badly want Everett
- 16:07Speaker 1: to be into the outdoors and like these things I'm
- 16:09Speaker 1: so passionate about, Like I find myself having to try
- 16:12Speaker 1: to temper my expectations because I'm already like finding myself
- 16:15Speaker 1: already thinking, oh, well, I gotta do this, I gotta
- 16:16Speaker 1: do this. Like what was it like for you when
- 16:18Speaker 1: when the boys were younger? Because there's seven and nine, right,
- 16:21Speaker 1: Levi and Lukey and that right right? Yeah, So what
- 16:24Speaker 1: what was like your mindset like early on? I mean
- 16:28Speaker 1: identical to what you're what you're describing. I think it's
- 16:31Speaker 1: just one of those things where you like it too much,
- 16:34Speaker 1: I think, and you just want them to enjoy it
- 16:36Speaker 1: like you do. And that was that was the hardest
- 16:38Speaker 1: thing for me, is when they're not old enough to
- 16:39Speaker 1: kind of understand how awesome some of these things are,
- 16:42Speaker 1: to try to kind of pitch it to them on
- 16:45Speaker 1: their at their speed, because I want to show them
- 16:48Speaker 1: and look how cool that is, And they're looking in
- 16:49Speaker 1: Turkey that's yards away and they're like, well, that's awesome.
- 16:53Speaker 1: But when you when you slow it down and figure
- 16:55Speaker 1: out what's you know, a crayfish is cool when they're little,
- 16:59Speaker 1: not sev Look how big is this beard is? I
- 17:01Speaker 1: don't care to take me back Christian, you know. So
- 17:05Speaker 1: that was kind of my experience of the same thing.
- 17:07Speaker 1: You want to like, your mind just racist for all
- 17:09Speaker 1: these things that I can't wait to do this, do this,
- 17:12Speaker 1: do this, and then you realize that the things that
- 17:15Speaker 1: kind of get you going right now aren't. It's gonna
- 17:18Speaker 1: take a while for that to be what gets them going.
- 17:20Speaker 1: So that was kind of my first experience kind of
- 17:23Speaker 1: that I had to temperate as well. So, yeah, do
- 17:25Speaker 1: you feel like you fall in the same boat, Dan,
- 17:27Speaker 1: as far as like I think in our past conversations
- 17:30Speaker 1: you've kind of shared some of the thoughts, right, Yeah.
- 17:32Speaker 1: I mean I was just excited, you know, like when
- 17:36Speaker 1: my daughter was born. She was the first kid I had,
- 17:38Speaker 1: and even in the hospital the couple of nights that
- 17:42Speaker 1: we were there, I was talking to my wife Sarah,
- 17:44Speaker 1: and I was just like, hey, man, I can't wait
- 17:47Speaker 1: to get her and a tree stand with me. I
- 17:48Speaker 1: can't wait to take her shed hunting with me. I
- 17:50Speaker 1: can't wait to do all these things with me. And
- 17:52Speaker 1: next thing, you know, it's just like you realize that
- 17:56Speaker 1: that is at a much slower pace. You know, they
- 18:00Speaker 1: for them, you could go out and do it, but
- 18:03Speaker 1: to take them and to get them to enjoy it
- 18:05Speaker 1: without burning them out is at a much slower pace. Yeah.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Do you guys ever you guys ever had like any
- 18:11Speaker 1: any worry about like what if they don't like any
- 18:14Speaker 1: of this stuff? Is that something that you have ever
- 18:15Speaker 1: thought about? Like what if you know, ten years, fiften
- 18:19Speaker 1: years down the road, but no interest in this kind
- 18:21Speaker 1: of stuff? Man? You know, And that's why I think
- 18:26Speaker 1: not pushing it on them is so important. If you
- 18:29Speaker 1: want to share with them your passion, I guess you
- 18:34Speaker 1: have to be able to share with them what their
- 18:38Speaker 1: interests are and that may not be hunting all the time.
- 18:42Speaker 1: So for me, like I have to take like I
- 18:48Speaker 1: kind of really liked baseball growing up, and my dad
- 18:51Speaker 1: was all about baseball and sports and stuff, and it
- 18:54Speaker 1: kind of burnt me out a little bit, turned me off,
- 18:57Speaker 1: and so I kind of pulled away in baseball, and
- 19:00Speaker 1: I don't want that to happen with my kids from
- 19:04Speaker 1: a outdoor standpoint, So just I'm basically baby stepping, you know,
- 19:10Speaker 1: like check this bug out and then play up this,
- 19:13Speaker 1: play it up like this bug is the greatest thing ever.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Or go out in the backyard recently and we're catching
- 19:19Speaker 1: fireflies and digging in the dirt and just getting dirty
- 19:23Speaker 1: and getting used to being outside where all this all
- 19:26Speaker 1: this nature happens. I think that's that's kind of the
- 19:31Speaker 1: path I'm going to take. Yeah, yeah, what about you, Andy, Yeah,
- 19:37Speaker 1: well definitely. I think scared is like the first the
- 19:41Speaker 1: first notion I had is like what if they don't
- 19:43Speaker 1: like this stuff that I just wanted to And I
- 19:46Speaker 1: sometimes I described the stuff to my wife and Mark
- 19:48Speaker 1: knows this. Like we've started planning on going somewhere on
- 19:51Speaker 1: some trip or something, and I start talking. My wife
- 19:54Speaker 1: doesn't even want me to start planning it until about
- 19:56Speaker 1: a month before we go because she doesn't want to
- 19:58Speaker 1: listen to all my plans and my ideas. So so
- 20:02Speaker 1: it's kind of with them. I was so scared that
- 20:05Speaker 1: like what if they don't like it? And now it's
- 20:07Speaker 1: kind of after you have and not like my kids
- 20:09Speaker 1: are almost one of them ten almost in seven. So
- 20:12Speaker 1: it's at the point now where it's not I'm not
- 20:14Speaker 1: scared that they're not gonna like it. I'm more like
- 20:18Speaker 1: it's almost like I'm gonna be sad if they don't
- 20:20Speaker 1: enjoy it like I do, because it's such an enjoyable
- 20:22Speaker 1: you know, everything about it, from fishing to hunt, whatever
- 20:24Speaker 1: it is. It's it's so much fun. And I just
- 20:27Speaker 1: hope because I know a lot of people that just
- 20:29Speaker 1: they don't have that in their life times. Oh man,
- 20:31Speaker 1: I hope I enjoy it like I did for their sake.
- 20:33Speaker 1: It used to be like I was afraid I'm not
- 20:34Speaker 1: gonna be able to take them, but now it's like, oh,
- 20:37Speaker 1: for their own sake, I hope that they love this
- 20:39Speaker 1: or at least something. But I'm with Dan on that
- 20:42Speaker 1: one for sure, that you realize that you really gotta,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know, slow it down and just let let them
- 20:47Speaker 1: love it at their own pace. Because if the same
- 20:50Speaker 1: thing with sports. You know, I was that kid that
- 20:52Speaker 1: was begging their dad to go outside and play baseball,
- 20:54Speaker 1: and I think I burned my dad out. But the
- 20:56Speaker 1: home on their stories so so so what what kind
- 20:59Speaker 1: of stuff because I'm I'm obviously very early. Still he's five,
- 21:04Speaker 1: and he's five and a half months old, pushing six
- 21:07Speaker 1: months old, I guess almost next week will be six.
- 21:09Speaker 1: And um, what kind of stuff you kind of alluded
- 21:12Speaker 1: to a little bit, damn, But what were like the
- 21:13Speaker 1: earliest things you guys were doing to kind of like
- 21:16Speaker 1: try to introduce introduce the kids to it. I mean, Andy,
- 21:20Speaker 1: what were the things that you were kind of first
- 21:22Speaker 1: starting out with the kind of you know, get him
- 21:24Speaker 1: introduced this whole world. Well, we've always had all kinds
- 21:29Speaker 1: of dogs, so that was the first, like the first
- 21:32Speaker 1: thing that they were exposed to, is we had coon
- 21:35Speaker 1: dogs and bird dogs and all kinds of and they
- 21:38Speaker 1: would be down there and they'd always want to go
- 21:39Speaker 1: check those out. But I think that was just something
- 21:42Speaker 1: that they always wanted to be around. But as as
- 21:45Speaker 1: it got all it went by, the time went by
- 21:47Speaker 1: a little bit. I think fishing was probably the first thing.
- 21:50Speaker 1: My parents live on the Kalamazoo River, so we can
- 21:52Speaker 1: go down there, and you know, I can distinctly remember him,
- 21:57Speaker 1: one of them sitting in the car seat and it
- 21:58Speaker 1: was kind of a half joke, but putting a fishing
- 22:01Speaker 1: rod in his lap in the car seat when we
- 22:03Speaker 1: were sitting at the edge of the on the edge
- 22:04Speaker 1: of the river. Just part of that for the kid,
- 22:08Speaker 1: for me, just so I can see it done. But
- 22:11Speaker 1: I think I think the water is probably the first
- 22:13Speaker 1: thing that really because they can there's just I don't
- 22:16Speaker 1: know what it is about the water, but it just
- 22:17Speaker 1: draws them to it. So probably that you've kind of
- 22:20Speaker 1: I feel like you've kind of done the same thing. Damn,
- 22:22Speaker 1: would you say, because I've I've seen you guys taking
- 22:24Speaker 1: the kids out a lot fishing. Yeah, And I think
- 22:29Speaker 1: it's what's easy first, right, being quiet in a turkey
- 22:34Speaker 1: blind or in a tree stand is not easy to do, right,
- 22:38Speaker 1: So anything where they can be loud and they can
- 22:41Speaker 1: show their excitement. And when they're young, like my my
- 22:45Speaker 1: son is three now and my daughter's five, and you know,
- 22:48Speaker 1: just like their dad, they're both loud and and and
- 22:52Speaker 1: so they are. They get excited when they see like
- 22:57Speaker 1: a water bug or the bomber goes under the water,
- 23:00Speaker 1: they scream in there. And that you have to capitalize
- 23:03Speaker 1: on that. I feel you can't tell them maybe quiet,
- 23:06Speaker 1: be quiet. You gotta oh that's awesome, good job, you know,
- 23:09Speaker 1: all that stuff and get him excited about the little things.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And then I think, as those little things get just
- 23:15Speaker 1: as even this time of year. Example two years ago
- 23:19Speaker 1: is when I started taking my daughter with me on
- 23:22Speaker 1: these nighttime drives looking for deer out in the fields.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Hand them the binoculars. It's not about you looking at
- 23:29Speaker 1: the deer, it's about them holding it, even if they're
- 23:32Speaker 1: looking at the wrong way, and you have these pretend
- 23:34Speaker 1: conversations with them, right like, hey, what do you see,
- 23:37Speaker 1: oh dad, that's a big buck. Dad. You know, it's
- 23:39Speaker 1: not about you know, it's not about at all. It's
- 23:41Speaker 1: probably a dog or a piece of wood out in
- 23:44Speaker 1: the field. But but they're excited about it, and that's
- 23:48Speaker 1: what you have to capitalize on. I feel, yeah, I've
- 23:51Speaker 1: got I've got a niece or several nieves, three nieces
- 23:53Speaker 1: now who who all whenever they come to my house,
- 23:55Speaker 1: they want to look at the deer mounts, or look
- 23:57Speaker 1: at the shed antlers, or I've got binoculars on my
- 24:00Speaker 1: back window. We're you know, we're always looking at the
- 24:02Speaker 1: fields behind the house. Same thing. And they always put
- 24:04Speaker 1: the binoculars the wrong way and look through the big
- 24:06Speaker 1: holes and always I don't mind. You know, they can't
- 24:12Speaker 1: see anything, but just like you said, Dan, they'll they'll
- 24:16Speaker 1: be like, oh yeah, I see it, I see imagination.
- 24:20Speaker 1: Uh huh, yeah, that's it's so much fun. I agree,
- 24:23Speaker 1: it's like and I guess I have got a little
- 24:26Speaker 1: bit of training with with my nieces because it's been
- 24:28Speaker 1: neat to see them from little aty biddies to now
- 24:31Speaker 1: the oldest is I don't know, seven or eight, and
- 24:35Speaker 1: getting to introduce them to, you know, just what I
- 24:39Speaker 1: do and talking about like when we eat venison, when
- 24:41Speaker 1: they come visit, talk about that, and tell them the
- 24:43Speaker 1: stories about all the different you know things I'm doing.
- 24:45Speaker 1: How we got this, what this deer? You know where
- 24:48Speaker 1: this deer was, and pointing out this one and we're
- 24:51Speaker 1: like back during the hunting seasons sometimes like we would
- 24:53Speaker 1: babysit them, um and you know, you know Dan, how
- 24:56Speaker 1: often I would have my wife come pick me up
- 24:57Speaker 1: on that one property drive the truck through the corn
- 25:00Speaker 1: So sometimes she would bring all the nieces with her,
- 25:02Speaker 1: so they'd be all piled in the truck and then
- 25:05Speaker 1: come driving the truck into the cornfield. And then I
- 25:07Speaker 1: come sneaking up to the truck to hop in the
- 25:08Speaker 1: back and then Kylie opened the window and all three
- 25:11Speaker 1: girls start screaming at the top of their lungs, like Mark,
- 25:16Speaker 1: like no quiet, right, Holy fields here. Uh but yeah,
- 25:22Speaker 1: like that kind of stuff. I'm I can see how
- 25:25Speaker 1: just introducing them those kinds of ways, um makes a
- 25:29Speaker 1: makes a big difference. And there's a lot of fun um.
- 25:32Speaker 1: But I want to talk more about fishing. Give me,
- 25:34Speaker 1: give me some more advice from both of you guys
- 25:35Speaker 1: as far as introducing kids to fishing, because that's gonna
- 25:38Speaker 1: be top on top of my mind, and I'm already
- 25:40Speaker 1: thinking I probably want to just introduce Everett to fishing
- 25:44Speaker 1: by going on like a seven day float trip fly fishing. Um, Right,
- 25:49Speaker 1: that's the right way to do it, right, something a
- 25:53Speaker 1: little hard, more hardcore, maybe like you could parachute in
- 25:55Speaker 1: or something. Maybe the Yukon River going through Alaska. I mean,
- 26:00Speaker 1: we're gonna do it, do it right, You don't exactly
- 26:07Speaker 1: in all seriousness though, someday, Andy, how cool it be
- 26:10Speaker 1: to take our boys back on that float trip that
- 26:13Speaker 1: we did in Montana last summer, Right? I thought about
- 26:19Speaker 1: that ever since we went Dude, Yeah, yeah, Son and
- 26:23Speaker 1: go oh man, Dude, that's the place. Yeah. Remember when
- 26:27Speaker 1: I did that pack rafting trip last summer, Dan, that
- 26:29Speaker 1: was with Andy, Um, and that would be I mean,
- 26:32Speaker 1: if the kids did learn how to fly fish, that
- 26:34Speaker 1: would be an amazing place to take him because there
- 26:36Speaker 1: were just so many fish and they were so eager
- 26:38Speaker 1: to feed. But um, that's a long ways down the
- 26:40Speaker 1: road for me at least. But yeah, yeah, yeah, okay,
- 26:46Speaker 1: But back to the beginning though, give me a talk.
- 26:48Speaker 1: How did you end up getting the boys into fishing? Andy?
- 26:50Speaker 1: Any uh, any lessons learned there? What was the story? Yeah? Absolutely,
- 26:57Speaker 1: it's gonna go a direction. You weren't thinking ice fishing.
- 27:00Speaker 1: That's it. It's the easiest thing. And I know you're
- 27:03Speaker 1: gonna say so, You're gonna say no flies and there's
- 27:05Speaker 1: no orbust or nothing. But I'm telling you, set him
- 27:08Speaker 1: on a bucket with that flasher in front of them,
- 27:10Speaker 1: and they are hooked. My kids have zero video games,
- 27:14Speaker 1: so the closest thing to a video game they have
- 27:16Speaker 1: is my VEX slide that flashes in front of them.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Were ice fishing in the shanty. So that that was
- 27:20Speaker 1: how my kid got hooked. Because it's it's that easy.
- 27:24Speaker 1: You can find him in shallow water and they're sitting
- 27:26Speaker 1: right over top of them, and you know they're there,
- 27:28Speaker 1: but you aren't gonna fish, probably at least the first
- 27:31Speaker 1: three years when you're taking them, because they're not real
- 27:35Speaker 1: equipped to take all those responsibilities on. They kind of
- 27:38Speaker 1: they require a lot of help. Well yeah, and like
- 27:41Speaker 1: how do you manage just the elements? I mean you
- 27:44Speaker 1: just you bring him in the shanty, bund them up
- 27:46Speaker 1: with a thousand layers and just let them play. Well,
- 27:51Speaker 1: that's what just like Dan was saying a little bit earlier.
- 27:55Speaker 1: It's not they're not. I was really hardcore. I feel
- 27:58Speaker 1: like I was when I was a kid, and I
- 28:00Speaker 1: feel like I was into it. But I was probably
- 28:02Speaker 1: just exactly like my oldest son. Probably as time goes by,
- 28:05Speaker 1: I'm starting to realize that I probably was just like him.
- 28:08Speaker 1: But a lot of the time they're just playing like out, we'll,
- 28:13Speaker 1: we'll be bundled up, we take the shanty, I set
- 28:15Speaker 1: the shandy up, I set their rods up. I don't
- 28:17Speaker 1: even set one up for myself because I'm not capable
- 28:20Speaker 1: of work in mine and helping them. So I just
- 28:23Speaker 1: sit between them and they catch a few fish, and
- 28:26Speaker 1: after an hour, if they're not biting really good, they're
- 28:29Speaker 1: ready to and then next thing you know, they're they're
- 28:32Speaker 1: outside the shandy. I can hear him wrestling whatever two
- 28:35Speaker 1: brothers do. They're fighting and doing whatever they do. But
- 28:38Speaker 1: that's the hardest part is to just and And I
- 28:41Speaker 1: don't have that Mark knows this. I'm not the stand
- 28:44Speaker 1: and watch kind of guy. I'm more of a hands on,
- 28:47Speaker 1: let's do this, let's do and and I have to
- 28:50Speaker 1: just take a step back because they want to do
- 28:51Speaker 1: what they want to do. And I feel like, and
- 28:54Speaker 1: I've always tried to describe like how they get to
- 28:57Speaker 1: know and anything that that we do. I try to
- 29:00Speaker 1: make it as organic as possible. I don't try to
- 29:02Speaker 1: push them and make them and force them. I just
- 29:05Speaker 1: let them do what they want to do. And if
- 29:06Speaker 1: sometimes when we're fishing, an hour of its fishing or less,
- 29:09Speaker 1: and the other two hours they're out chasing each other
- 29:12Speaker 1: and throwing snowballs, I guess you know they're having fun.
- 29:15Speaker 1: I feel like that's a memory that they can have
- 29:17Speaker 1: when they get older. It's a good experience. And I hope,
- 29:20Speaker 1: you know, I hopefully that that you know translates to
- 29:24Speaker 1: I'm wanting to do it more as they get older
- 29:25Speaker 1: and they're more focused on it. And if you know what, though,
- 29:28Speaker 1: when you have kids, you realize that as long as
- 29:31Speaker 1: you have them, if they want to throw snowballs, go
- 29:34Speaker 1: fishing and throw snowballs the whole time, as long as
- 29:36Speaker 1: they want to go, you'll be happy for them to
- 29:37Speaker 1: do that. You know. Yeah, what what is the evolution been?
- 29:41Speaker 1: Have you seen? Like, yeah, since you started doing that
- 29:44Speaker 1: with with them, are they you know, have they picked
- 29:48Speaker 1: it up the way you hope they would do? They
- 29:50Speaker 1: want to go ice fishing or fishing on the lake
- 29:52Speaker 1: and stuff. Now are they getting more into the actual
- 29:54Speaker 1: fishing part of it? Like have you seen that grow
- 29:55Speaker 1: at all? Or what's that look like? It kind of
- 29:58Speaker 1: comes and goes, Man, it really wavers. Some days they're
- 30:00Speaker 1: into it and they want to do it for hours,
- 30:02Speaker 1: and other days they just want to goof off. And
- 30:06Speaker 1: I don't know, you know, I don't know if so,
- 30:08Speaker 1: it's definitely progressed now, like I can. It's at the
- 30:13Speaker 1: point where I LEVI we just like we actually went
- 30:15Speaker 1: fishing yesterday and he's got his own open face, you know,
- 30:19Speaker 1: he he doesn't have zep CO two oh two anymore.
- 30:22Speaker 1: It's he's done open face and cast it, you know,
- 30:25Speaker 1: and all that jazz. You know. He can take the
- 30:28Speaker 1: fish off the hook, he can do anything that he
- 30:30Speaker 1: needs to do, put the bait on. But it definitely
- 30:33Speaker 1: has progressed. But there's times where you go, You're like,
- 30:35Speaker 1: I want him to just fish, but sometimes he just
- 30:38Speaker 1: wants to google. He was fascinated yesterday after we fished
- 30:41Speaker 1: and didn't do very well, we pulled he pulled a
- 30:43Speaker 1: lily pad up and it was about twelve ft long
- 30:46Speaker 1: and the stock of it was and that was a
- 30:49Speaker 1: that was a fascination. We had to talk about for
- 30:51Speaker 1: fifteen or twenty minutes. But it's still it's still a blast.
- 30:55Speaker 1: But back to what you were saying, Yeah, I definitely
- 30:57Speaker 1: think they've progressed, you know, but I I don't want
- 31:01Speaker 1: to push him, but I think they have progressed. Yeah.
- 31:03Speaker 1: Do you think that it is either one of them
- 31:05Speaker 1: more into it than the other, Luke versus Levi, or
- 31:07Speaker 1: they both kind of the same place. They both have
- 31:11Speaker 1: their own little uh niches where they kind of fit in.
- 31:14Speaker 1: So Lukey is the youngest one and he's the baby,
- 31:16Speaker 1: so that's why he's Lukey. But um, he's like we
- 31:21Speaker 1: call him the slops okay, so his his mentality is
- 31:23Speaker 1: totally different. Levi is a hummingbird and and lukey' is
- 31:27Speaker 1: a slapt So we when we have different activities, that
- 31:30Speaker 1: one of them. So trapping is Lukey think he absolutely
- 31:35Speaker 1: loves it. And it's perfect because he's methodical and everything
- 31:38Speaker 1: he does in his life, he's slow. He just takes
- 31:41Speaker 1: his time and I've learned that from him. Why we
- 31:44Speaker 1: I take him? It's like, there's no reason to hurry,
- 31:46Speaker 1: just take your time. And and he loves trapping, and
- 31:49Speaker 1: Levi not so much. It's not ac ipact enough. I
- 31:52Speaker 1: don't think it doesn't you know, really get him, get
- 31:55Speaker 1: him charged up. And Levi wants to fish and do
- 31:58Speaker 1: things like that. And Luke likes love sitting in a
- 32:01Speaker 1: true stand Leavi not so much. He wants to play
- 32:03Speaker 1: on my phone. And if we sit in a deer
- 32:06Speaker 1: blind for too long, and it's like, so I think
- 32:08Speaker 1: they you know, definitely have to navigate different you know,
- 32:12Speaker 1: paths for each one of them because they they have
- 32:14Speaker 1: different interests or interests in different uh you know, different
- 32:18Speaker 1: things that they like. I guess, yeah, that's kinda be
- 32:21Speaker 1: so cool to see those different unique interests. Grill though, Yeah,
- 32:27Speaker 1: that's crazy. What about you, Dan, What are you seeing
- 32:29Speaker 1: from the kids so far as far as their interests
- 32:31Speaker 1: in this stuff? I'm sure, I'm sure. I'm sure Knox
- 32:34Speaker 1: is really the big outdoors of the minority. But what
- 32:36Speaker 1: about the altar two? No, it's it's it's cool to
- 32:39Speaker 1: see this because she gave us five. Now. So when
- 32:45Speaker 1: she was too, you know, she would we would go
- 32:47Speaker 1: fishing for blue gills and she would basically just be
- 32:52Speaker 1: sitting on my lap and I would she would maybe
- 32:54Speaker 1: hold the pole and reel in. To last summer, she would,
- 32:59Speaker 1: you know, she was four, and she you know, she
- 33:03Speaker 1: could start reeling the fish in when the bobera would
- 33:07Speaker 1: go under water. And now this year, oh my god,
- 33:11Speaker 1: the last time we went fishing, she did not want
- 33:14Speaker 1: to leave. And I was pretty pumped about that. I mean,
- 33:17Speaker 1: she is putting the worm on the hook, she is casting,
- 33:21Speaker 1: she's reeling it in when it goes under. She can't
- 33:23Speaker 1: take the fish off by herself quite yet, but she
- 33:27Speaker 1: is gun hoe about fishing. And it's just been the
- 33:33Speaker 1: thing that I've been doing is letting her do all
- 33:35Speaker 1: of this at her own speed. Because um, she would
- 33:40Speaker 1: want a real like three years ago, she would want
- 33:42Speaker 1: a reel, or two years ago, she just reel just
- 33:44Speaker 1: real the whole time, and real and real and real,
- 33:47Speaker 1: and it's not even enough time for the worm to
- 33:49Speaker 1: sink yet. And I'm just like, no, sweetie, don't do that.
- 33:52Speaker 1: You can't do that. You gotta let it sit. And
- 33:54Speaker 1: then she would go and she wouldn't want to do
- 33:55Speaker 1: it anymore. So then when we would go fishing, I
- 33:59Speaker 1: didn't care if the bomber went under one time. I
- 34:02Speaker 1: just let her reel in every time. Did you get one? No?
- 34:05Speaker 1: I didn't get one, Dad, Okay, Well maybe just try
- 34:07Speaker 1: letting the letting the bomber sit there for a little bit. Okay, okay,
- 34:11Speaker 1: I'll try, Dad, And then they and then she would
- 34:13Speaker 1: realize that you have to let it sit there for
- 34:16Speaker 1: just a second, and then it would go over. And
- 34:19Speaker 1: I think what really got her hooked was the being
- 34:25Speaker 1: able to just play around with some of the stuff
- 34:27Speaker 1: like the worms, hold the worms in her hand and
- 34:30Speaker 1: just play around and look at them and get dirty
- 34:33Speaker 1: and in some and being in some clear water. We
- 34:36Speaker 1: have a pond that we fish and it's crystal clear
- 34:39Speaker 1: water and you can see the fish swim up to
- 34:41Speaker 1: the to the worm and pull the bomber under and
- 34:45Speaker 1: that is and the kids get a really big kick
- 34:48Speaker 1: out of that. So that that's how go ahead. I
- 34:54Speaker 1: was just gonna ask Dan the milestone. This is a
- 34:57Speaker 1: huge milestone in our house. The hook sat. Yeah, that happened.
- 35:01Speaker 1: It was like when people potty train, Like he sets
- 35:04Speaker 1: the hook. I called my wife when he sets the
- 35:05Speaker 1: hook knowledge like, you don't have to. He catches his
- 35:08Speaker 1: own fish when he when he set the hook, it
- 35:10Speaker 1: was his own fish. Things you get proud of when
- 35:13Speaker 1: you have kids. That's right, people, But we had to
- 35:16Speaker 1: have a talk about that because my my wife dad
- 35:22Speaker 1: is a huge angler, huge fit bass fisherman, and when
- 35:26Speaker 1: he sets the hook, it's almost like he's trying to
- 35:29Speaker 1: rip a manhole cover off of a street, just like
- 35:33Speaker 1: and he just he rips. Like the the term ripping
- 35:37Speaker 1: lips literally happens, you know when you when you're real
- 35:39Speaker 1: in it's just the lips of a fish on a hook.
- 35:41Speaker 1: Because he's setting the hook so hard. So my my
- 35:43Speaker 1: daughter is trying to mimic him, and she's just ripping.
- 35:47Speaker 1: It almost throws the pole so fall over, so I'm like, sweetie,
- 35:51Speaker 1: you don't have to do what grandpa does. Just really
- 35:54Speaker 1: in the pool. You're gonna be fine. Now, what about
- 35:58Speaker 1: what about Mac? What's his interest on the fishing side.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Is he getting yet? I saw that he was like
- 36:02Speaker 1: watching your I think it was your father in law
- 36:04Speaker 1: cleaning fish the other day. Up is that? Is he
- 36:07Speaker 1: getting into it? He's kind of on the same pace,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I would say, just a little bit behind. He doesn't
- 36:13Speaker 1: like to touch the fish or touch the worms as
- 36:15Speaker 1: much as Ava did. But um, he caught his I'm
- 36:19Speaker 1: gonna say he caught it his first fished. Uh. My
- 36:21Speaker 1: father in law threw the bober out bluegill, took it
- 36:25Speaker 1: under and uh then he he kind of helped reel
- 36:29Speaker 1: it into to the shore and then he got his
- 36:32Speaker 1: picture taken with it, and he was pretty pumped about that.
- 36:35Speaker 1: But he was um. This last fishing trip was kind
- 36:39Speaker 1: of a milestone because he used to be afraid of
- 36:41Speaker 1: worms and touching the fish and stuff like that. But
- 36:44Speaker 1: now when sister would catch a fish and he needed
- 36:49Speaker 1: or she needed a new worm for her hook, he
- 36:52Speaker 1: would get the worm for her. So they had kind
- 36:54Speaker 1: of a system worked out. I'll get you the worm,
- 36:57Speaker 1: you catch the fish and then I'll get you another
- 36:58Speaker 1: worm and tready. So whatever he wanted to do, whether
- 37:02Speaker 1: it was just real like she did a couple of
- 37:04Speaker 1: years ago, it's like she's he's two years behind where
- 37:08Speaker 1: she's at and he's three. So um, you know it's
- 37:11Speaker 1: it's always And I don't know about you, Andy, but
- 37:15Speaker 1: when you had your first boy, like having a boy,
- 37:19Speaker 1: it's like if my daughter didn't want to go hunting
- 37:23Speaker 1: or fishing, you know, there's a part of me that's
- 37:26Speaker 1: just like, ah, oh well, but when you have it's
- 37:29Speaker 1: like you have these expectations for my my son, and
- 37:32Speaker 1: maybe you do to Mark with your first child being
- 37:35Speaker 1: a boy, where it's like, Okay, he's a boy. He's
- 37:39Speaker 1: gonna hunt, he's gonna fish, he's gonna do all these
- 37:42Speaker 1: things and and you know, hell he may be into
- 37:47Speaker 1: you know, designing clothes. Yeah. That and Mark said, it's
- 37:54Speaker 1: a very good chance. There's the really, Mark, I know
- 38:01Speaker 1: it's usually not recorded what I'm insulting you usually, so
- 38:04Speaker 1: please let its on the record. But but yeah, I'm
- 38:09Speaker 1: sure you probably felt the same way too, Andy into Yeah,
- 38:13Speaker 1: for sure, man, it's it's a wild ride, for sure.
- 38:17Speaker 1: What what about the you mentioned trapping that Luke, he's
- 38:20Speaker 1: really been into that. How how did you go about that?
- 38:23Speaker 1: What's the process introducing them to that whole that whole deal.
- 38:28Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know, maybe it's certain personalities, but
- 38:31Speaker 1: I think that's one of the first things that I
- 38:33Speaker 1: can remember doing with my dad, and it's something I mean,
- 38:38Speaker 1: there's a million different things you can try to trap.
- 38:40Speaker 1: I mean, different ways of water, if different things, and
- 38:44Speaker 1: if you how I would describe, just from my point
- 38:47Speaker 1: of view, trapping. My dad told me when I was
- 38:49Speaker 1: a kid, he said, when we're trapping, we're trapped muscats
- 38:52Speaker 1: and mink and all different kinds of stuff. But it's
- 38:54Speaker 1: like Christmas morning, he said, you go up there and
- 38:57Speaker 1: that it's like every time you unwrapped the present Christmas morning,
- 39:00Speaker 1: and it it was like that to me, like it
- 39:02Speaker 1: didn't start out that way. But with my younger son,
- 39:05Speaker 1: he who loves it. I mean, when we go check traps,
- 39:09Speaker 1: I mean we and you got to check them every day.
- 39:11Speaker 1: And there were some some traps that I would check
- 39:13Speaker 1: and these are things that I didn't know i'd have
- 39:14Speaker 1: to do until I had kids. Some of them are
- 39:17Speaker 1: kind of a painting, you know, in the butt to
- 39:19Speaker 1: to check. So I would check all those in the
- 39:22Speaker 1: morning at four thirty in the morning, before before work.
- 39:25Speaker 1: But if I had like drounding sets or things like that,
- 39:27Speaker 1: or kind of bears that it's you know, that they
- 39:30Speaker 1: could be checked in the afternoon. I would say, all
- 39:32Speaker 1: those traps and I would find myself actually setting traps
- 39:35Speaker 1: that maybe weren't real. I'd like thehood of catching something,
- 39:40Speaker 1: but if they were, it would be in areas where
- 39:42Speaker 1: I could use conna. Bears are different things, so I
- 39:43Speaker 1: could come back and check them with the kids. And
- 39:46Speaker 1: there was many times where I would catch stuff in
- 39:48Speaker 1: the morning and then I wouldn't mess with it. I
- 39:51Speaker 1: just want to work and come back. And obviously these
- 39:53Speaker 1: these you know, animals are dead, so it's not like
- 39:56Speaker 1: they were suffering or anything like that all day. But
- 39:58Speaker 1: I would come back in the afternoon and you know,
- 40:00Speaker 1: play dumb. We'd come driving up and I'd let him
- 40:03Speaker 1: get in front of me and oh and he'd run out,
- 40:05Speaker 1: you know, and those kind of things like that. I
- 40:07Speaker 1: mean that he just he lives for the coon trapping
- 40:10Speaker 1: and you know, mink. Mink is the funnest I think
- 40:12Speaker 1: he likes that the best because they leave a little
- 40:14Speaker 1: you know sign in the mud and different things like that,
- 40:16Speaker 1: or in the snow it's you know, snow on the ground.
- 40:18Speaker 1: So there's a lot of clues to look for. And
- 40:20Speaker 1: even if there's not a lot of clues, like you
- 40:22Speaker 1: were saying, then you can talk about the bug being
- 40:26Speaker 1: the coolest thing in the world. You can you can
- 40:28Speaker 1: turn it into fun no matter what. You can find
- 40:30Speaker 1: something that you know, look at these tracks over here,
- 40:32Speaker 1: what do you think this is? And they and it's
- 40:34Speaker 1: to the point now where like my little boys are
- 40:36Speaker 1: the little sponges of information, Like what do you think
- 40:38Speaker 1: that is? That's the raccoon trap. For sure. You can
- 40:41Speaker 1: see different things, you know, different his feet look like this,
- 40:43Speaker 1: and if it was a possible, it would have this,
- 40:45Speaker 1: So that I think trapping is a really good one
- 40:48Speaker 1: to uh for them to you know, see the wild world,
- 40:52Speaker 1: like like I do. I guess, yeah, I know nothing
- 40:55Speaker 1: about trapping, so I'm leaning on you here. And um,
- 40:59Speaker 1: you mentioned few things that stuff to me, like just
- 41:01Speaker 1: the way that you know, you're setting some traps now
- 41:04Speaker 1: not necessary for their effectiveness, but more so for like
- 41:06Speaker 1: the ability to get there with the kids and that
- 41:08Speaker 1: kind of stuff. Is there anything else that you've learned
- 41:11Speaker 1: to that's helped you as far as like, if someone
- 41:14Speaker 1: else was listening and they want to introduce their kids
- 41:15Speaker 1: to trapping, any other things that you kind of picked
- 41:17Speaker 1: up along the way that you'd recommend. Yeah, I mean
- 41:23Speaker 1: trapping is one of those things. Everything is now there's
- 41:26Speaker 1: an unlimited resource on the internet for any you can
- 41:29Speaker 1: cook on YouTube and watch one after another after another
- 41:33Speaker 1: different methods people are doing to catch, you know, different things.
- 41:37Speaker 1: But muskrat traps. Man, if you've got muskrats, and then
- 41:41Speaker 1: granted they're not worth a whole lot of money, but
- 41:43Speaker 1: they might be the kind of thing to get your
- 41:44Speaker 1: kid hooked on the outdoors for the rest of his life.
- 41:46Speaker 1: So there worth something you know that way. But you
- 41:50Speaker 1: can trap muscrats on a little pond, almost every little
- 41:54Speaker 1: pond you could ever finds them, and you can trap
- 41:56Speaker 1: them with a one time kind of bear. There's no
- 41:59Speaker 1: you know, even if it's somebody that's never trapped before,
- 42:01Speaker 1: you can't really screw up the counter bear. If the
- 42:03Speaker 1: cond of bear goes off something in it, it must
- 42:05Speaker 1: got that tenant. He's dead. So and those are you know,
- 42:08Speaker 1: just stuff like that. You can't You got to not
- 42:11Speaker 1: be afraid to just go do it. I guess, you know,
- 42:13Speaker 1: go do it and try it and get on YouTube
- 42:15Speaker 1: if you have to, you know what I mean. Books obviously,
- 42:18Speaker 1: but this this brings up another thing, um that as
- 42:23Speaker 1: hunters too, will I think I think you've probably had
- 42:26Speaker 1: this already happened Dan, I'm sure you have, Andy, But
- 42:29Speaker 1: I know it's like I imagine it would be an
- 42:31Speaker 1: interesting thing when you first introduced the child to a
- 42:35Speaker 1: dead animal, Like, how will they process that? What that means? Um?
- 42:41Speaker 1: What was that like for you Andy, whether it was
- 42:43Speaker 1: that was trapping, was that with the deer hunting? You
- 42:45Speaker 1: know what? How have you approached all that? Well? I
- 42:49Speaker 1: have there's one that kind of stands out in my
- 42:51Speaker 1: mind and I kind of have a picture of that
- 42:54Speaker 1: same day that kind of reminds me of every time
- 42:56Speaker 1: I see it. But I think LEVI was probably our
- 42:59Speaker 1: oldest is probably he was probably two and a half maybe,
- 43:04Speaker 1: and I had killed a deer, shot a deer behind
- 43:08Speaker 1: the house. There's a little bit snow on the ground,
- 43:10Speaker 1: and uh, I took him out there with me, and
- 43:14Speaker 1: so he was like, I mean he's less than two
- 43:17Speaker 1: ft tall. He's just a little I got him all
- 43:19Speaker 1: bundled up, and it's cold out, you know, and it's
- 43:21Speaker 1: and i'd already know the DearS down. It's kind of
- 43:23Speaker 1: similar to the track being setting it up for him
- 43:25Speaker 1: and the years down. And I actually drug it to
- 43:27Speaker 1: this little two track that I could drive too. And
- 43:29Speaker 1: I hadn't got it the deer yet. So I come
- 43:32Speaker 1: back to the house and I bundle him all up
- 43:34Speaker 1: and I go, you know, the whole song and dance
- 43:37Speaker 1: I shot a deer, and I don't know if we're
- 43:39Speaker 1: gonna be able to find it and this and that,
- 43:40Speaker 1: and he's just like three years old. He's talking blabb
- 43:43Speaker 1: and you know, he wants to go, and so we
- 43:45Speaker 1: get them all dressed up, you know, and he goes
- 43:47Speaker 1: out there with me and we we quote unquote find
- 43:50Speaker 1: the deer and he's really excited. Man, he's just like
- 43:53Speaker 1: and I don't know if that was the first experience
- 43:55Speaker 1: you've had was something that was dead, but I can
- 43:57Speaker 1: distinctly remember he was watching and I say, all right,
- 44:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna go to you know, I'm gonna get the
- 44:04Speaker 1: steer and now we're gonna feel dressed it, and so
- 44:07Speaker 1: he's like, okay, yeah, and he's just kind of watching
- 44:09Speaker 1: there and I start to feel dressed the deer and
- 44:11Speaker 1: I opened this dough up and he I hear him say,
- 44:15Speaker 1: I'm getting back in the truck, Dad, even as he
- 44:17Speaker 1: thought like he wasn't quite ready for that yet, and
- 44:19Speaker 1: I don't. He wasn't freaked out, and there's been no
- 44:22Speaker 1: lingering effects of that trauma that I put him through.
- 44:25Speaker 1: But he's standing there just like I mean, he's just
- 44:27Speaker 1: this little baby staying there, all bundled up. Well, I'm
- 44:30Speaker 1: getting back in the truck, Dad, And he goes back
- 44:31Speaker 1: to the truck. I let him back in the truck
- 44:35Speaker 1: and I go back out there. I'm like, that's one
- 44:37Speaker 1: of those moments where it just goes through your mind.
- 44:38Speaker 1: You're like, man, am I gonna regret that later? I don't.
- 44:41Speaker 1: But there was no ill effects. He's fine. He's but
- 44:44Speaker 1: we have like a hobby farm kind of a thing
- 44:47Speaker 1: going out of our house too, so that kind of
- 44:49Speaker 1: helps we have. I think it's important that kids to
- 44:52Speaker 1: get to see, you know, how where food comes from.
- 44:55Speaker 1: So and that that's something I've always been very much,
- 44:59Speaker 1: you know, I wanted to make that very available to
- 45:01Speaker 1: them to see, you know a lot of people and
- 45:03Speaker 1: talk about that with with them. That a lot of
- 45:05Speaker 1: people like that guy on that sign right there, smiling
- 45:07Speaker 1: eating that hamburger. And people don't like hunting, but they
- 45:10Speaker 1: don't mind people eating hamburgers. And you know, it doesn't
- 45:14Speaker 1: make sense that people, you know, and just that whole
- 45:16Speaker 1: song and dance that you've heard a million times that
- 45:18Speaker 1: you know, that animal lives, it's a free life, it
- 45:21Speaker 1: lives the life that it was intended until maybe thirty
- 45:24Speaker 1: seconds thirty seconds of whatever it is we're eating has
- 45:28Speaker 1: anything to do with the human while it's alive. And
- 45:30Speaker 1: that cow, it's entire existence stood there. You know, not
- 45:33Speaker 1: that I'm against farming, because I don't want to sound
- 45:34Speaker 1: like I am at all, but I just we make
- 45:37Speaker 1: it very clear. My wife's very onboard with it too,
- 45:40Speaker 1: that that the best is part of life. That's that's
- 45:43Speaker 1: you know, everything's gonna die, and we're you know, we're
- 45:45Speaker 1: taking advantage of the resources that we can get our
- 45:48Speaker 1: hands on, you know, and it's it's not anything that
- 45:50Speaker 1: we don't take serious. But at the same time, you know,
- 45:53Speaker 1: it's been it's been all positive. I think I don't.
- 45:56Speaker 1: I don't think I can think of at the time
- 45:58Speaker 1: that Lukey was exposed to time is something that, like
- 46:01Speaker 1: I said, we've always got pigs that are getting ready.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I mean they nicknamed their pigs, you know how kids
- 46:05Speaker 1: will name their pigs that we we had pigs that
- 46:08Speaker 1: were and they're not four age pigs or show pigs
- 46:10Speaker 1: or any of that. They're just gonna be going in
- 46:12Speaker 1: the freezer. And we talked about it the entire time,
- 46:13Speaker 1: and they're probably four, maybe four and three, maybe three
- 46:18Speaker 1: and five when we first they first had one, they
- 46:21Speaker 1: named their pigs bacon and sausage, so they kind of
- 46:27Speaker 1: have a grip on it at this point. I mean,
- 46:29Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to insult anybody, but I my five
- 46:33Speaker 1: and seven or seven and nine year olds have a
- 46:34Speaker 1: better grip on where their food comes from than a
- 46:37Speaker 1: lot of people. So, you know, I think it can
- 46:39Speaker 1: be a really good lesson for for the rest of
- 46:42Speaker 1: your life about you know, your relationship with food. Do
- 46:44Speaker 1: so no, like I I'm blabbing on now, but it's uh,
- 46:48Speaker 1: I don't have any real bad stories for do you hopefully?
- 46:51Speaker 1: Do you think that do you think the key though
- 46:53Speaker 1: to having them so comfortable with that was then just
- 46:55Speaker 1: the fact that you had them exposed to it early
- 46:57Speaker 1: and often, and then that you can't just explain aimed
- 47:00Speaker 1: it as you went. Would you say, that's kind of
- 47:02Speaker 1: what's been like the key of that success? Do you think? Yeah?
- 47:06Speaker 1: I think I think so, because we've had a lot
- 47:09Speaker 1: of I mean they've had a lot of experience. We
- 47:11Speaker 1: do process a lot of you know, wild game and here,
- 47:14Speaker 1: and they're they're into that, like the idea of getting
- 47:17Speaker 1: our own food and and things like that. Is they
- 47:20Speaker 1: like that idea of eating fish. That would be the
- 47:22Speaker 1: first thing that like, I don't know what it is
- 47:25Speaker 1: about fish, but they don't. Nobody's like, oh that poor fish.
- 47:29Speaker 1: When you're cleaning the fish for some reason, and whenever
- 47:31Speaker 1: something has for people tend to do that. But I
- 47:33Speaker 1: mean my kids and like I said, me and Dan
- 47:37Speaker 1: have talked about we were talking about no no pressure
- 47:39Speaker 1: on them at all, but Luke will help me clean
- 47:43Speaker 1: like when we're skinning. For instance, we had uh a
- 47:48Speaker 1: couple of links that we caught one day and we
- 47:49Speaker 1: went down to the basement and it was bedtime and
- 47:52Speaker 1: this is something my wife was actually we were talking
- 47:54Speaker 1: about yesterday at our house. We there's no Martin knows
- 47:58Speaker 1: this bedtime is kind fluid with the brad Lea's I
- 48:02Speaker 1: think everything is, yeah, pretty much. But no, if they're
- 48:11Speaker 1: doing something that we in our minds deemed like productive,
- 48:15Speaker 1: they don't have to go to beat or they don't
- 48:16Speaker 1: have to take a napper. It doesn't have to be
- 48:18Speaker 1: dinner time. For like, if if we're working on something outside,
- 48:21Speaker 1: if we're messing with the pigs, or if we're if
- 48:23Speaker 1: I'm skinning a deer, or if I'm tracking a deer
- 48:25Speaker 1: or anything like that. They if they're just playing outside,
- 48:28Speaker 1: if that's if that's what it is, they don't have
- 48:31Speaker 1: to come in to go to bed if they're outside
- 48:33Speaker 1: and enjoying it outside. Now, if they're inside watching TV,
- 48:36Speaker 1: like if they want to watch TV, and they asked
- 48:39Speaker 1: him that sometimes we let him. If it's eight o'clock,
- 48:42Speaker 1: it's like all right, the bedtime, and like we'll go outside,
- 48:44Speaker 1: we'll go outside, We'll go outside. And they know that
- 48:46Speaker 1: at this point. But if even with like skinning the
- 48:49Speaker 1: mink in the basement downstairs, if if if Luke wants
- 48:52Speaker 1: to do that, when I had a bunch of stuff
- 48:53Speaker 1: that I wanted to skin and I started working on it.
- 48:55Speaker 1: And Becca is real good about it. She doesn't have
- 48:57Speaker 1: a problem with with them coming down there, and if
- 49:00Speaker 1: they want to stay down there and if they're engaged
- 49:02Speaker 1: and whatever is going on, if they just want to
- 49:03Speaker 1: play in the basement, you know, off in the other room,
- 49:06Speaker 1: you know, in time for bad guys, but if they're
- 49:08Speaker 1: engaged in there and and something you know that that
- 49:11Speaker 1: they can be learning about, we just let it roll
- 49:13Speaker 1: and let them, let them continue to do that until
- 49:16Speaker 1: they lose interest in it, and when they're ready to go,
- 49:18Speaker 1: be done, you know, hopefully. And that in particular night
- 49:21Speaker 1: I skinned I don't know, I think to mink and
- 49:24Speaker 1: I don't know, a couple of coons or something. And
- 49:25Speaker 1: he was down there the whole time he was helping.
- 49:27Speaker 1: He was hanging onto this and hanging onto that, you know,
- 49:29Speaker 1: and it took me three times as long to skin
- 49:31Speaker 1: them all because he wanted to help. But you know,
- 49:34Speaker 1: that's something that we try to do, is make sure
- 49:35Speaker 1: that we don't you know, hamper their interest in something
- 49:40Speaker 1: by something like bedtime, right, Yeah, something arbitrary. It's funny.
- 49:44Speaker 1: That's such a good point. That's that's something that my
- 49:47Speaker 1: parents did. My dad especially with me, that I think
- 49:49Speaker 1: really helped me get into the things that I'm into.
- 49:52Speaker 1: He always later in years, he would always say that
- 49:54Speaker 1: I always just knew how to feed the habit, always
- 49:56Speaker 1: feed the habit. So if ever I was showing any
- 49:58Speaker 1: interest in like hunting or fishing of the outdoor is
- 50:00Speaker 1: he would, you know, he would always help feed that habit. So,
- 50:03Speaker 1: like you said, he would never stop him. He would
- 50:05Speaker 1: never if I if I want to go out for
- 50:06Speaker 1: the weekend to go hunting, he wouldn't. You know. He
- 50:08Speaker 1: put aside things because that was always something he prioritized.
- 50:11Speaker 1: Or if he if he was gonna spoil me to something,
- 50:14Speaker 1: it was gonna be hunting gear or fishing gear, like
- 50:16Speaker 1: he would he would. He he was really tough in
- 50:18Speaker 1: a lot of ways, but when it came to like
- 50:19Speaker 1: a new fishing pole or something like that, he's like, well,
- 50:21Speaker 1: I'll feed the habit for this one special thing. Um.
- 50:25Speaker 1: And I think you know that was something whatever it
- 50:27Speaker 1: was helped encourage it. Yeah, and it it certainly worked.
- 50:30Speaker 1: He fed the habit to what's now an obsession across
- 50:33Speaker 1: the board for me. Um what so, Yeah, that was
- 50:37Speaker 1: a that was a tip I've kept with me. Um Dan,
- 50:41Speaker 1: what about you? Back to what would originally asked Andy
- 50:43Speaker 1: about though, when it comes to introducing them or exposing
- 50:46Speaker 1: them to you know, to death a dead animal something
- 50:49Speaker 1: like that. What's what's that been like for you and
- 50:51Speaker 1: the kids. Yeah, so I'm pretty blunt with him right
- 50:55Speaker 1: at the beginning. I mean I tell them that if
- 51:00Speaker 1: we're eating meat an animal dies fly, you know, like
- 51:03Speaker 1: a spider will eat a fly, a snake will eat
- 51:06Speaker 1: a frog or a mouse, and we will eat a deer.
- 51:10Speaker 1: And I've kind of compared what we do with other
- 51:13Speaker 1: things in nature, right, So, uh and then uh, this
- 51:17Speaker 1: past turkey season was a perfect example. I'm you know,
- 51:19Speaker 1: I shot my turkey. There was blood involved, and I
- 51:22Speaker 1: took the turkey back home and I was, you know,
- 51:24Speaker 1: cleaning the meat off of it and whatnot. And my
- 51:26Speaker 1: daughter was sitting there and kind of watching me do it.
- 51:30Speaker 1: And instead of just like doing it, I kind of
- 51:34Speaker 1: explained to her and I showed her, Hey, look at this,
- 51:37Speaker 1: We're gonna turn this into turkey nuggets, or we're gonna
- 51:40Speaker 1: turn this into something or you know something, or hey,
- 51:45Speaker 1: we're gonna make fish sticks out of this fish. Or something,
- 51:48Speaker 1: and then she relates it to food, and that way,
- 51:51Speaker 1: when we do have supper or eat that meat, then
- 51:55Speaker 1: she can have a conversation with me. She's like, oh, Dad,
- 51:58Speaker 1: you shot this buck, didn't you. Now we're gonna eat it. Yeah? Yeah,
- 52:01Speaker 1: Oh hey Dad, is this the fish that I caught? Yes,
- 52:04Speaker 1: it is. It is the fish that you caught, you know,
- 52:06Speaker 1: and and and and so that you can have those conversations.
- 52:10Speaker 1: But man, we've I followed a blood trail with her
- 52:13Speaker 1: before my stepdad shot up Um shot a deer a
- 52:16Speaker 1: while back. It was not this season, but the last season,
- 52:19Speaker 1: and I had her. We kind of walked through the timber,
- 52:22Speaker 1: followed the blood and talked to her about how I
- 52:25Speaker 1: mean I got Sometimes it's best to be really detailed
- 52:29Speaker 1: about it. Um. That way, it's almost like it goes
- 52:32Speaker 1: over their head a little bit, but they're they're engaged
- 52:35Speaker 1: with you still, like, yeah, he put that arrow right
- 52:38Speaker 1: through the vitals, and loss of blood is gonna gonna
- 52:41Speaker 1: stop it, and and and you know all this stuff.
- 52:43Speaker 1: And they look at you a little confused, but they're like, yeah, yeah, okay, yeah,
- 52:47Speaker 1: that's cool. Yeah, even though they don't they don't really
- 52:49Speaker 1: understand that. You know, we found the buck. There's blood
- 52:52Speaker 1: in it, and she's like, Dad, is that buck? Is
- 52:55Speaker 1: that buck dead? Yeah? It's dead. Grandpa shot it. Okay,
- 52:59Speaker 1: Now what are we going to do? I'm like, well,
- 53:01Speaker 1: do you want to sit here and watch us? You know,
- 53:04Speaker 1: we have to take its guts out, because we're gonna
- 53:06Speaker 1: take the guts out so it doesn't ruin the meat. Well, Dad,
- 53:09Speaker 1: I don't want to watch that. Okay, you don't have to.
- 53:12Speaker 1: You know, we'll go go with grand grandma. You know,
- 53:14Speaker 1: don't force him to do anything really that they don't
- 53:16Speaker 1: want to do, because that day was great for her,
- 53:20Speaker 1: but maybe taking the guts out would have been too much.
- 53:24Speaker 1: So let's just you know that there that bridge will
- 53:27Speaker 1: be crossed another time. Yeah. Yeah, that that makes a
- 53:31Speaker 1: lot of sense. Um, what about the actual hunting part
- 53:36Speaker 1: of things? I know that you you haven't taken a
- 53:38Speaker 1: va out to sit yet right down, Nope, just fishing
- 53:42Speaker 1: thus far. She found her first shed the spring. That
- 53:46Speaker 1: was pretty cool. Um, But Andy, you you've been getting
- 53:50Speaker 1: the boys out now with all sorts of stuff. How
- 53:53Speaker 1: how did that begin? Did you? What was their first hunt?
- 53:56Speaker 1: How is that evolution? Kind of looked. I think I
- 54:00Speaker 1: gotta think about that a little bit, but I'm thinking
- 54:02Speaker 1: that it was probably in a pop up you know,
- 54:04Speaker 1: pop up blind. I used to have a food plot
- 54:07Speaker 1: that I had planned just for that reason, Like I
- 54:09Speaker 1: would spend hours and hours on it, and the chances
- 54:13Speaker 1: of seeing the buck in it were very slim, but
- 54:15Speaker 1: I did it just for that reason. And I actually
- 54:17Speaker 1: never I have I've yet to kill a deer with
- 54:20Speaker 1: them with me yet, but I've in you know, a
- 54:23Speaker 1: recent couple last couple of years, I've kind of transitioned
- 54:25Speaker 1: away from the compound bow and back to the recurve,
- 54:28Speaker 1: which I shot in the past, but um, it kind
- 54:31Speaker 1: of opens up the parameters for me and what I
- 54:34Speaker 1: feel comfortable shooting. And so now I've actually last year,
- 54:38Speaker 1: I took him a few times and I have a
- 54:40Speaker 1: couple of three stands set up for them to get into.
- 54:42Speaker 1: And that's that's it, man, that's I mean, that's obviously
- 54:46Speaker 1: not where I started, but um, that's where I'm at
- 54:49Speaker 1: right now, and it is it is something else like
- 54:51Speaker 1: they I can't wait till the day that I happened.
- 54:54Speaker 1: Last year, I had a really close encounter with a
- 54:56Speaker 1: buck that was probably not, you know, wouldn't be a
- 54:59Speaker 1: shooter for most people, but when you got your like
- 55:02Speaker 1: five year old, six year old with you, it would be.
- 55:05Speaker 1: Lukey was with me and it was like five yards
- 55:08Speaker 1: away and I had my recruit and I'm like, I'm
- 55:09Speaker 1: gonna shoot this buck and it just turned and ran away.
- 55:12Speaker 1: And I was like, I've never been so bummed that
- 55:16Speaker 1: a deer, you know, blew me up. Ever, I was
- 55:19Speaker 1: just like and it was like probably a two year old,
- 55:22Speaker 1: you know, it was a small deer, but it was
- 55:24Speaker 1: one of those things like I just can't I can't
- 55:27Speaker 1: explain how much fun And I can't even imagine what
- 55:29Speaker 1: it's going to be like someday when they're shooting deer
- 55:31Speaker 1: or turkeys or whatever is they're doing. But um, yeah,
- 55:34Speaker 1: that that would be. I would have to say probably
- 55:37Speaker 1: the pop up blindness, the transition, how I got him
- 55:39Speaker 1: into hunting, what what What was Lukey's reaction to that
- 55:42Speaker 1: close call last year? Man, It's just I don't know
- 55:46Speaker 1: what I explain it. They just they have a and
- 55:49Speaker 1: and his the way he is, he's so like his
- 55:53Speaker 1: brother is very cereebral and asked one million questions and
- 55:57Speaker 1: then Luky it just looks at you and he's like
- 55:59Speaker 1: and he's like kind of squint his ee and he's
- 56:00Speaker 1: just thinking. It's like all his questions. It's almost like
- 56:03Speaker 1: you've answered himself. I don't know what's going on in there,
- 56:05Speaker 1: but but he he just looked at me and he's
- 56:08Speaker 1: just like that deer was close, Dad, And I'm like,
- 56:11Speaker 1: it was five yards away. I'm like, yeah, but it
- 56:13Speaker 1: was close. He's like, were you gonna shoot it? And
- 56:15Speaker 1: he was sitting there and there's still as a stone,
- 56:17Speaker 1: you know, and nobody moved. I don't know if it
- 56:19Speaker 1: so were the Wind's world or you know, who knows.
- 56:22Speaker 1: The place that I hunt's got a lot of human activity.
- 56:24Speaker 1: No hunters, but a lot of people. They like to
- 56:26Speaker 1: take walks with their ship too and stuff, which you know,
- 56:29Speaker 1: it is what it is. But it might have been
- 56:31Speaker 1: something like that they ran him off, but I mean
- 56:33Speaker 1: it was It was really cool just to see his
- 56:35Speaker 1: reaction and I could I could like I hugged him
- 56:38Speaker 1: after the deer ran off. I'm like, what do you
- 56:40Speaker 1: think of that? And when I hugged him, I could
- 56:41Speaker 1: feel a little heartbeating fast. I was like, oh my gosh,
- 56:44Speaker 1: like and I wanted to just tear up right then,
- 56:46Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't know, I think he gets it.
- 56:48Speaker 1: I'm not gonna get my tow ahead of myself, but
- 56:50Speaker 1: I think you might get it, you know. So it's
- 56:52Speaker 1: pretty amazing, man, do they are they? So? They do
- 56:55Speaker 1: they have like the itch now from the hunting? Do
- 56:57Speaker 1: the gig excited about wanting to sit out there with
- 56:59Speaker 1: you when it's the deer turkeys or something like that? Yes? Absolutely, Um,
- 57:04Speaker 1: I remember I was listening to to I don't know
- 57:07Speaker 1: if it was. I think it might have been the
- 57:08Speaker 1: mediatory that you were on. They were talking about um,
- 57:11Speaker 1: Steve was talking about his kids and when he was
- 57:14Speaker 1: a kid that his dad it was laughable to think
- 57:16Speaker 1: that you weren't welcomed to go whenever here's his dad
- 57:19Speaker 1: was hunting and I and I've I've kind of thought
- 57:22Speaker 1: like that's a good way to do it, and I'm
- 57:23Speaker 1: kind of trying to as time has gone by. Now
- 57:26Speaker 1: I'm thinking like that's the way I have to do it.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Any time that I'm gonna go do anything outdoors, I'm
- 57:31Speaker 1: never gonna And there's been times when I said, nobody,
- 57:32Speaker 1: you can't go today because it's too cold. Or to
- 57:34Speaker 1: this or to that, or you know, I feel like
- 57:36Speaker 1: I got a good shot at the buck that I
- 57:37Speaker 1: got on the trail camera or something, and I've kind
- 57:40Speaker 1: of put all that and basically and scrapped all of that.
- 57:44Speaker 1: Now it's just if they want to go, I don't
- 57:47Speaker 1: care what it is we're going, and sent controls kind
- 57:50Speaker 1: of out the window. Too. Was two boys, but I don't.
- 57:52Speaker 1: I don't. One thing I don't do is I don't
- 57:54Speaker 1: take them both at the same time, because I feel
- 57:56Speaker 1: like it's just it's easier for them to not get
- 57:59Speaker 1: distracted with you by each other and things like that,
- 58:01Speaker 1: and I prefer to, you know, try to keep it
- 58:04Speaker 1: one on one. That way, I can make sure I'm
- 58:06Speaker 1: doing the right things too, you know. Yeah. So your
- 58:09Speaker 1: philosophy that you never they're never not invited on a
- 58:13Speaker 1: hunting trip, does that mean that one of your kids
- 58:15Speaker 1: might show up at our boundary waters back country whitetail
- 58:18Speaker 1: hunt in Minnesota. Well, not be surprised. For the first
- 58:26Speaker 1: thing that are in our household. You witnessed system. The
- 58:30Speaker 1: very first thing that our kids learned in the word no.
- 58:33Speaker 1: They learned that very quick around you, and that's how
- 58:36Speaker 1: we do it, so I can't say no, and there
- 58:38Speaker 1: are times that I have to and that might be one,
- 58:42Speaker 1: but I guess I guess I'll tell them all this time.
- 58:44Speaker 1: I guess you don't want my kids coming? I guess no.
- 58:47Speaker 1: I just think that based on my history of canoes,
- 58:49Speaker 1: it wouldn't be safe for them. Yeah, that's true, that's true.
- 58:56Speaker 1: What am I getting myself into that one? That's for
- 58:57Speaker 1: another day, I guess. Yeah. Now, Hey, Mark, I got
- 59:00Speaker 1: a question for you, right. So we talked a little
- 59:04Speaker 1: bit earlier about how, um, like what was going through
- 59:10Speaker 1: my mind and how I was going to have to
- 59:13Speaker 1: adapt to my children kind of living this this lifestyle
- 59:19Speaker 1: and you this year is a huge change for you.
- 59:23Speaker 1: You know, you're you went out west, You're doing all
- 59:25Speaker 1: this outdoor activity, but now you have a how old
- 59:27Speaker 1: is he? Six months old? Just about you? Okay, so
- 59:30Speaker 1: now you're you're bringing a six month old with you.
- 59:33Speaker 1: So how has your outdoor life kind of changed with
- 59:39Speaker 1: the addition of a six month old? Yeah? You know,
- 59:42Speaker 1: it's one of those things that I definitely had like
- 59:44Speaker 1: a lot of apprehension about, like even before having kids,
- 59:47Speaker 1: it was how will kids impact all the stuff that
- 59:50Speaker 1: we want to do and all these plans I have, UM,
- 59:52Speaker 1: So I kind of selfishly was like thinking about that
- 59:54Speaker 1: a lot um. But then once we had it, once
- 59:57Speaker 1: we had Everett, you know, my wife and I were
- 59:59Speaker 1: both kind of on the same page that we never
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: believe that we had to change our lifestyle to commendate
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: like yeah, like we never felt like there's some people
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: you see that they have a kid and they never
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: leave the house again, and like it's always like, oh,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: you can't do this, you can't do that, you can't
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: do this too hard. We had so many people telling
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: us that kind of stuff, like, oh, you'll never be
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: able to do this again. Or last summer when we're
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: out west, and after we had told people that we
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: were pregnant, we had so many people say, oh, we'll
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: enjoy your trip out there. You're not gonna go out
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: there again. Um, we're good luck you know this backpacking
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: trip and it will be a long time till you
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: can do that anymore. And we always kind of thought
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: in the back of our minds like no, like we
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: can still like we can just incorporate him into these things,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: um and make it a really cool thing for him,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: And that was our goal and our hope before all this,
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: but um, you know, this summer was like the testing
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: grounds for that theory. Though. Can we still do some
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: of these things? Um? So yes. We We've been out
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: now on the road out west for almost three weeks
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: camping um with a little guy, and the week before
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: that we took him on his first camping trip. Before that,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: and we've done a lot of hikes and stuff and
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: Michigan and now here in Montana, and um, you know,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: overall it's going really well. And I'd say, like, I'd
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: say that I think we're right, like we can still
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: do we can still live the lifestyle that we have
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: been and we can still be very outdoors focused. We
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: can still do a lot of these things and travel
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: a lot um. But it is definitely different too. Um.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: I think the big things have changed is that everything
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: just takes longer. Like I can't prioritize like my goals anymore.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: It's much more so about like the minimum, like it's
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: just okay, let's just get there, or let's just have
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: a little bit of an experience. Let's just test the
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: waters and if we can at least if we can,
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: if we can hike for half hour, that might be
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: all it is, and if that's all it is, and
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: that's great, we just just enjoy it for whatever it
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: was we got. So, you know, we had on the
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: drive out here. Usually I like to burn rubber and
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: get out here as fast as I can drive straight through,
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: but that definitely wasn't happening with a five and a
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: half month old in the car seat. So you know,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: it took us three days and we took like long
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: hour and a half two hour breaks that rest stops
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: and let him play and you know, just everything takes
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: a long time with feeding him and changing him and
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: letting him nap and play and all this kind of stuff. Um,
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: So that was an adjustment as far as like traveling.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: And then the same thing like when we're out here,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: like trying to go for hikes and things like that,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: everything just takes longer. So I set much lower expectations
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: for what we're gonna do, and um, lots and lots
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: of breaks, and then I'm just you know, I having
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: to think about different things. You know, before when it
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: came like if I was gonna do some big hike,
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: I was just thinking about, Okay, how far can be?
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: And Kylie hike and you know what's the elevation gonna gang,
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: gonna be alrightet ten miles? All right, let's go do
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: it now. Obviously, all those things are much different because
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: you know, you don't want to be too far from
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: the trailhead and then have the baby throw connection because
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: he hasn't adjusted to the elevation yet or something like that,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: or him get sick and be too far away from
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: the car um, or the sun get too hot in
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: him be overheating. And there's all these new things that
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: I'm trying to learn about now too, So it's a
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: much more aware of things like sun and weather and
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: rain and wind and bugs, um, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: So we've had a lot of hikes that we've started
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: and then to turn around. So we've done a lot
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: of like our longest like we've done with him was
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: like seven miles. UM. We've done a lot of like
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: two to three to four mile things with him, UM
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: a couple of hours. But it's been cool. I mean,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: even though we're not doing anything like quote unquote epic,
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: like the stuff I used to think I always want
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: to do. UM, just taking like a little walk down
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: the road with him and like see him get excited
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: about you know whatever, a dog running by that that
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: is that is super cool. Um. So it's been it's
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: been awesome. I mean he's been great. Like I mentioned
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: at the beginning, we've been really lucky with him. He
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: sleeps really well. He's just a happy, chill baby. Um.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: He really enjoys being outside. It seems like that he
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: just enjoys looking around. He's very observational. He's just constantly scanning,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: looking at things, taking in the world around him. Um.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: And then this past weekend we actually took it on
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: his first tent camping trip. So everything before this has
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: been in the camper, you know. Um, this this weekend
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: we did a tent camping trip. We actually found a
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: really cool place. There's this road that actually goes up
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: to the top of this kind of um, this relatively
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: moderate mountain range here in Montana, and you can drive
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: this road up to the top and you're kind of
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: above tree line, like beautiful, beautiful views this National Force.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: So it's like you can camp anywhere. And it's kind
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: of place that we would usually hike to, but we're
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: not gonna do like a ten mile backpacking trip with
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: him yet. This is the kind of thing that we could.
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: We could drive up there, it was pretty comfortable. We
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: could camp right out of the truck. We could set
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: up the tent and still be like in a really
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: pretty place and feel like we're out there. So it's
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: like a really great opportunity to you know, still be
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: doing like a something that felt like exciting for me
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: and Kylie but was accessible for him. And he had
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: a blast and he just kind of hangs out and
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: he slept in the tent. Great, we have a set
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: up um. That was one of the things we didn't
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: know what tent camping was gonna be like, because not
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: only is it myself and Kylie, but we also have
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: our two dogs. So I've got my big lab and
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: then Kylie's little dog, Cooper, So we have two dogs,
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: two people and him. So we bought a bigger tent
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: in the spring to accommodate a bigger family. So we
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: bought a four person backpacking tent. And then because like Boone,
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: the lab is so just I mean, you know, Andy,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: he's just not I know exactly, he's not self aware,
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: like he's just spinning around and jumping exactly, and he's
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: definitely not so one of our words always like him
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: stepping on Everett, We're bumping him and smashing him or something.
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: So we got this little play like this little mini
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: kid tent that we actually use for a lot of things,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: like if we're hanging out outside. Imagine this is like
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: a little I don't know, Like it's a three ft
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: long by one ft tall mini tent um that just
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: pops up like a pop up blind kind of thing.
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: And so when we're outside hanging out, and like if
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: there's too much sun and he needs a little bit
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: of shade or we wanted to set him where while
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: we're cooking or whatever, you can put him in that
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: little thing and he can roll around and play, but
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: he's not gonna, you know, get stepped on by the
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: dog or the same thing in the tent. So we
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: put him in that inside of our tent so that
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: when Buoner jumps in, there's run around trying to get settled.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: He's not going to step on ever. So that worked
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: out really good. Um, and then for like a sleeping
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: bag tip situation. Oh and let me take a step back.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: That baby tent. If anyone's curious, it's called the kid
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: co Peapod. I had some people ask me on Instagram
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: about that, um, and then we put him in this
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: little like Patagonia full down suit that um it's you know,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: it's like a snowsuit almost. But we used as like
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: a sleeping bag. We've seen some other people online that
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: use this for their little babies, taking them backpacking and stuff.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: And that worked awesome. I mean, he stayed warm, he
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: slept through the night like like just perfect, and you know,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: he he heard coyotes howl for the first time and
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: we had a wolf howl in the middle of the night.
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure, yeah it was. It was one of
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: those things like me and Kylie both, Yeah, we woke
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: up in the middle of night and like like we
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: woke up to it and then you just kind of
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: heard the tail end of it and then you're like,
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: was that what I think it was? Because we both
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: the kind of staff and looked at each other talking
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: about that all the nights. Yeah, what were we just
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: talking about? That you that I was talking about? Yeah, yeah,
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: it was, yeah, talking about you all the nights that
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: you've spent and I have never heard one either, and
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: you've never heard one. That's cool. Yeah, And so we
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: actually one once before last summer. I heard one once, Um,
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: it was the first time, and then yet this this
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: time was the was the second time, and obviously ever
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: start gonna remember. But still kind of cool that you
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: can say that on your very first time tank camping. Yeah. Um,
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: so that's been really sweet. And then, um, I don't know,
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: I mean it does pay to have some helpful gear
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: like we have had this like baby backpack carry it's
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: um the Osprey Poco a G is the one we
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: were using, and that's been great for carrying them around
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: all over the place. Um, don't you have some kind
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: of backpack carrying into that you've used? Yeah, I have.
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: I don't even know the name of it right now,
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: but it was we bought it a garage tale and
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: it's it's been used for all three kids. Yeah, I
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: feel like having something like that that's comfortable is nice
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: if you're gonna do a bunch of hiking with the kiddo.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: That's been huge for us because he's just been kind
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: of toted around all over the place and it's comfortable
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: and it has like a pull up sunshades, so kind
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: of like a sunroof deal that pulls up over him.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Um My wife is really paranoid about him getting sunburned
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: because he's like very fair skin like her. He's got
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: very light skin tone, so she's always saying he's gonna
- 1:08:28Speaker 1: get burns, gonna get burns. So having a little sun
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: cover is is good. Um, but yeah, I don't know,
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: it's been it's been awesome. It's very different, but it's
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: been so exciting. Different, isn't it. You can't You can't
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: explain how it's different to somebody that doesn't have kids.
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: I remember telling you that, Like it's like when somebody
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: just explains the mountains to you and you're like, yeah,
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: I get it, man, I get it, and you're the
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: person telling you's going now you don't get it. And
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: then the first time you lady to get your eyes
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: on and you're like, oh, that's what are you mean? Kids?
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: It's like that too, Like it's so cool, and you're
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: tell them the story, how cool it was it, whatever
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: your kid did, and you can see it in their
- 1:09:03Speaker 1: eyes that you're telling. The person you're telling, they're just like,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: I don't want to listen to this, But you don't
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: care that they don't want to listen to it. You're
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: so happy about it. You can keep telling them, you know, yeah,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: I can definitely relate to that now. And I so
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: I always was that guy. I was that guy. I
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: was like, Oh, they're talking about the kids again, blah
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: blah blah. But now I told you I've seen that
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: look in your Here goes Andy on his baby rants
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: talking about kids. Yeah. But but yeah, now I'm on
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: the other side. Um. And that's one thing that I
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: really that's one thing that I really had to learn
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: to do. Like what you said, Mark was slowed down
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: anytime I wanted to, uh, bring my kids with me.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: You know, It's like you can't just go out and
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: check a trail camera or go out and glass for deer.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: You have to make sure their sippy cups. You have
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: to make sure their shoes are on. You have to
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: make sure they've gone to the bathroom before they get
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: in the drunk. You have to make sure there's you know,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: if they get hungry, you might need to grab a snack,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: you might need to go look for your extra pair
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: of binoculars. You might need to you know, and then
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: by the time you get it ready to go, oh dad,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: I gotta go potty. Well I thought I just asked
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: you to go potty. No, Dad, I don't. I didn't
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: have to go, but now I do, Okay, so then
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: you gotta go potty again. And it's just like you
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: can't just hop in, hop out go you you have
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: to prepare for everything. That's that's definitely definitely been my
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: big take home probably from this this summer so far
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: with him. It's uh, yeah, it's just it's just get
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: I think it gets easier though, Yeah, would you say that, Dan,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: Like it gets you don't expect like even though Mark
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: you said you didn't um, your expectations are you know,
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: maybe lowered. But as it goes by, like as time
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: goes by now, like every time you go do something,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: you're not like ready gung ho, and then oh shoot,
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: I gotta I forgot, I gotta pump the brakes here.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: It's like now I I'm kind of tempered, like I
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: know when we go do Yeah, absolutely, I feel that
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: I have to do the you know, I'm I'm changed.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I have changed to expect that it's you know, I
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: have to be slow. Yeah, and it's probably worth it, right,
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: you don't mind so much now, No, I don't mind,
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: not at all. Yeah, you know, speaking of changes you
- 1:11:15Speaker 1: have to make for kids. Because my wife and I
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: and my baby all share a twenty by ten camper
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: right now out here in Montana. I I can't record
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: my podcast in the camper because he's either napping or
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: he's gabbing away and making all sorts of noise. I'm
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: recording this podcast in the front seat of my truck
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: in the middle of a rain storm. Can you hear
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: that at all? Dan? Can you hear the rain and thunder? Yeah?
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: I can hear the rain on top of the car,
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: but I can't hear I didn't hear any thunder. Yeah.
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: So kids always always changing things up. But um, back
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: to the camping thing. Um, Andy, you took your you
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: took your family out for their first Western trip last year,
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: so with a six and eight year old, uh, to
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: Yellowstone and stuff? Right? What was that like? That was awesome? Man,
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: it was an awesome experience. I'd never been out to
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: Yellowstone or Granti Con so for you know, and I
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: didn't want to. I kind of didn't want to go
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: without them. And I've been waiting for you, like, you know,
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: ever since they were born, thinking like we should we
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: go this year? And then we're like, yeah, they're probably
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: not old enough. And and we waited until they were,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: you know, this last year, so you know, eight and six,
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: I guess, And it was it was the perfect age
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: to take them because everything they can, you know, you
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: can point out and on the side of the road
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: and say look at that, you know, whatever it is,
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: and they can they can take it in, you know.
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: And uh, but they're not so young that it's not
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: all about you know, no, there's no diapers involved or
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: you know, any of that, which, you know, not to
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: say it wouldn't have been fun, but I think for
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: their sake, they enjoyed it because they they were just
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: you know, they got to ride in the back seat,
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: they weren't all strapped into a car seat, and they
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: you know, read books, and it was it was an
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: awesome experience. But not just just yellow Stort of Grand Teatown.
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: I mean everything that we went throughout there, We saw
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: the bad Lands and different things like that, and and
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: I mean they're absolutely hooked at it, like they if
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: if a week goes by and one of them doesn't say,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: remember when we were in Yellowstone or when we were
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: in Grand Tea Town, or you know, not a week
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: goes by, that one of them doesn't bring that up
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: or I always will hear him talking to their son,
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: like the neighbor kids come over that we're talking about it.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: We went to Yellowstone. It was so cool, and so
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: I definitely think that another one of those trips is
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: in our our future real shortly. I think that's awesome.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: That's that's what I I just can't wait to yea
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: once he you know, recognizes stuff and he like, you know,
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: right now, it's cool that he's in these places, but
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: it's mostly just cool for me and Kylie, but he's
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: just kind of like oblivious. But it'll be it'll be
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: really exciting when he actually recognizes what's happening. And I do.
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: I was thinking about this the other day. I still
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: think there might be something like positive for him in
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: having these experiences. Now absolutely, you know, if this energy
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: that you guys are shooting when you're in those places,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: I think he benefits from that. I mean, I think,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: don't you know what you think? Yeah, that's a that's
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: a good point. I think you think you're right. I mean,
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: how happy are you when you're in those places? And
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: I mean I don't it's not like he's reading your
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: mind or anything like that. Nothing weird like that, but
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: I mean I feel like, you know, there's probably a
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: good vibes coming off you guys when you're out there.
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: I would think, yeah, that makes sense. And even you know,
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: even if it's like four years from now or something
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: and we're just telling him the stories of this stuff
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: or he's looking back at the pictures, and I feel
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: like that's something like, oh, yeah, I was doing that stuff.
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: Yeah that was me. I was that kid, And I
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: think that's yeah, that's maybe that builds some kind of
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: like identity or confidence or something that you know will
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: positively impact him. I hope. So I don't know anything
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: from your trip taking them camping, like any uh, any
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: lessons you learned from that first big family road trip
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: with with that age of kids. You know, our kids
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: are they're they're awesome, man. I mean not just trying
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: to brag about my kids, but they don't have electronics.
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: They don't know anything about I mean, they don't how
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: to run an iPad better than I do, or any
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: any electronics that you could ever get your hands on.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: They're better at it than anybody that's our age. But
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: at the same time, like we don't have. We we've
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: never put something in front of them to occupy them.
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: We've taught them and I think this is, you know,
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: gonna do them a service in the future for the
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: outdoors because we've taught them to entertain themselves when when
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: there's nothing going on, figure out something to do. Like
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: if if there's nothing going on, they go outside, they play,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: they take their b B guns out there. You know,
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: whatever it is they're doing, they're they're doing it on
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: their own. So that's what, you know, what I learned
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: about it. Just let them enjoy it, because if they're
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: staring at at a iPad or whatever it is, they're
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: not going to enjoy They're not gonna even remember it.
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: It's gonna be another time in the car. And we
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: didn't do that. And we got a lot of books
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: can check out things. That was something that you kind
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: of recommended, getting books for the Western reading like type things.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: Didn't really get anything specifics for myself, but I thought
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: we thought about that with them. So we had like
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: books that we had running from the library. I checked
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: out from the library that we could you know, that
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: they could read all the way out There are different
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: things and and it was pretty amazing. I think, uh, like,
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: I can't wait to go do it again. We've been
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: talking about what we're gonna do next, but it all
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: takes money. So yeah, that's that's the trick. That did
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: seem like you guys had such a cool trip though,
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: that was that was fun to see the pictures. Man,
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: that's awesome. So Dan went, Dan wins the first big
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: family road trip for you guys out to the mountains
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: going to be I think next summer um potentially going
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: to Colorado. Nice, so gonna My brother went out there
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: with his son, uh this past summer, and he drove
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: throughout the entire night, so it didn't really like change
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: his son's sleeping pattern. And I think I talked to
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: you a little bit about that. So I think that's
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: what I'm gonna try to do, is you know, put
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: the car, kids in the car at like I don't know,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: eight o'clock at night, drive all the way through the
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: night to uh Colorado or a stop somewhere, or break
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: the trip down into like go to the o Maha
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: Zoo and spend the night and then get up early
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the next morning and drive to Colorado. And but you
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: know that's still not gonna happen until next summer. So
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: I'm excited. Though the logistics are gonna be weird, but
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: I'm excited. Yeah, that'll be awesome. And and and that
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: was something we did do, Like the first day we
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: took off, we started like two thirty in the morning
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: or something, and so we did have a really good
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: long spell that where he just slept all the way through.
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: And that does help just cut some time, because if
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: it's during the middle of the day, they're just gonna
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: there's gonna be more times when you have to stop.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: And so the nighttime driving is a is a key
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: idea for sure. Um. I think we gotta wrap this
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: one up here pretty quick, but I want to get
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: one more thing um out there, one more talk. And
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: this is something that I'm now having to encountering. This
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: is something that me and Dan have talked about a
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: lot over the years. Um. But I'm particularly interested in
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: your thoughts on this, Andy, and then maybe Dan, where
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: your latest thoughts are on this? But what about what
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: about Andy when it comes to balancing right, balancing your hunts,
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: balancing your hunting trips with you know, with the obligations
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: you have as a father. Um, I know you you
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: you and me take offer some eltcutting trips. We've done
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: some fishing trips. Um. You know, it seems like that's
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: something you're able to You're able to take off for
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: for those types of things. And I know you hunt
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: a pretty good amount of home. How do you manage
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: to keep you know, that balance in the right place though, Well,
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: I think you've heard the term, uh what is it
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: a political capital that we say sometimes you gotta you
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: gotta be home when you can be home, and when
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: it's time to be in the wood, you gotta you
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: gotta be in the woods. So I try to be
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: be take care of business when I'm home. So the
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: mama is glad, doesn't isn't mad at me when I leave.
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: So I don't know, I I you know how because
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: she's my wife, is is super understanding, like she doesn't
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: want to hear me tell her every detail about everything
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: that we're gonna do, every hunt, every trail we're gonna
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: go down. But at the same time, she she wants,
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: she likes for me to go and enjoy those things.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: So and I think she he's the kids enjoyment and too,
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: And I think and I've not really gotten like stucked
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: her into that world so much. She loves kayak and encampment.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: She camps probably forty days out of the year without me,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: the kids. They go all over different state parks and
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: stuff all the summer long because she's off in the summer.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: So um, it's it's uh, it is a balancing act.
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: But at the same time, I mean, she understands that
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: what it what it is, what it means to me,
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: and how good it is. You know what it does
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: to you, man, it gets your back to zero when
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: you can go out and do stuff like that. It
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: makes you feel alive. So I mean, that's that's the
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: biggest thing I fant is do what you gotta do
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: when you can't be hunting and fish, because you know,
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: make make their life good when you're here, and then
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: they don't they want want you to go. They won't
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: be mad when you leave. I guess yeah. I think
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: to something you said there about how it kind of
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: does you good. And I don't know if this is
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: I've always thought, is this just me trying to come
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: with like a self serving explanation or is there truth
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: to this? But I've always thought that these types of
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: things when we go out and do our own hunts
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: or trips or whatever it might be. Um while it
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: might take you away from your kids of the family
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: for some period of time, it puts you in a
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: better place. You are more engaged more. They're a better parent,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: a better husband, a better person with them, I think afterwards,
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: because that's a part of your life. Do you think
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: that's reasonable? I think absolutely true. I mean, adel new
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: wrinkle when you go now because the kids are like,
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: what I miss my wife when I go, for sure.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: But if there's just something about those little boys, man,
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: they just they just want to watch TV. And you know,
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: you're sitting there and they come in the room and
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: what do you see? What are you watching? Bed? And
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: they come walking over and climb up on you and
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: they're sitting there watching TV with you. You know, it's
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: like you missed that stuff, you know. But I definitely
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: think that you it kind of recenters you. You're getting
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: the in the grind of just working all the time,
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: and it feels like, you know, if you have other
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: obligations or things on the weekends and stuff, it doesn't
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: you don't get to, you know, recharge your batteries. But
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: when you want to do something like that. I feel
- 1:21:17Speaker 1: like it just kind of puts you back to back
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: to zero, and you can you know, I definitely think
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: that there's some truth to that. Is there is there
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: anything other than, like you said, just kind of racking
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: up the capitol in the off season. Is there anything
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: else you've done to make it, you know, better, maybe
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: for the kids or anything that. Is there anything you've
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: done to just make that work a little bit better
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: for everybody else? Which I can't. I wish I had,
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: like the the silver bullet right here, but I feel
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: like I'm I'm letting you down. I don't know, I
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: feel like you than I am, and it probably isn't
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: a silver bullet, but so I you know, I think
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: I think a lot of times, and I've kind of
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: read what I said. You gotta take care of business
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: when you're here. Do the things that you can't do
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: when you're gone. I mean, as simple and stupid as
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: that sound, but that's that's what I do. I don't.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: I can't if if you got us thinking leaky roof,
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: don't go hunting and wait for that text when you
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: get back into cell service somewhere. And so there's water dripping,
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: I mean not that that's happened that hasn't happened here,
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: but that type of thing. If you've got something that's
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: gonna manifest when you're gone, you better take care of
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: that because you're never gonna go again. If that's something
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: like that happens, you know, that's a good point. I
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: guess that would be my best advice. Take care of
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: business when you can take care of business, because when
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: you're out there in the middle of Idaho and you
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: don't get service and you get seventy two texts when
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: you get back to town, Hey, what do I do
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: in the hot water or whatever? You know? I don't.
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: I don't want that. That's my nightmare right there. So
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: I try to prevent all those things from happening. Yeah,
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: what about you, Dan, anything anything new now? In in
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: this fifth or sixth year now of of dealing with
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: this stuff, your head anywhere different than it was last
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: time we talked about during last fall, Give me something good, man,
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: because I feel like I didn't have anything good. So
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: give me. Here's what I will say, and that is
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: early season hunting has now become a go when my
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: wife is happy type of thing. Right If she's in
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: a bad mood. I probably won't go hunting the first
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: week in October because you know, if she's having a
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: bad day and she's like, well, I don't care what
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: you do. If she knows that I am going to
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: be gone for a night or two nights or gone
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: for even four hours to go on a hunt, she
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: has to sit with my kids. And our kids are crazy, right,
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: and they do put stress on on people. This is
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: not a joke, this is nothing new. But I have
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: to make sure that I take care of my wife
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: like this. The trip I went out to California with
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: that was for her to let her know that I
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: was happy. You know, I'm happy with her and that
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: you know, basically, these trips that I do, although I'm
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: I don't know. My wife doesn't suffer in silence, if
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: that makes sense. So she will tell you, well, yeah,
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: she she tells you exactly. Yeah. Yeah, she tells you
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: exactly how she feels at all time, which is good. Right.
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: She's not the kind of person where you have to say, so,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: what's wrong and then she says nothing. If I say
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: what's wrong, you better be prepared because she's gonna tell
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: you what's wrong. Right. So so that's my life too, man.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: I think, yeah, similar. So when I you know, when
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: I go for you know, when I go on my
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: two week vacation, she's gonna I'm like, hey, is everything okay? Well,
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: uh yeah, everything's fine. I mean she's come to expect that.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: But it's not gonna be fun. I'm gonna be here
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: with three kids. I'm gonna be a single parent, and
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: it's not easy raising three kids because you have basically
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: everything else gets put on hold until I get back,
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: and you know, stuff doesn't get done, maybe laundry or cleaning,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: or the kids have to eat hot dogs for you know, uh,
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: five out of ten days or whatever, because that's just
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: simple and I don't know it's and it's one of
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: those things. Here's one thing that I have to have
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: to say is I think that once men get married,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: and I don't know where this is coming from, but
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: once once men get married, there something is happening in
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: today's world where they are it's just like, okay, now
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: you are no longer a man. And I think these
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: I think these trips when when for me, anyway, when
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: I can go out and like you said, Andy, get recentered,
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: I think that is needed. I think men need that. Uh,
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: they need to be challenged, they need to be um
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: out in nature. They need to you know, basically beat
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: on their chest and be like him Taylor, right, you know,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: be I think obviously the definition of a man has
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: changed over the years, but I think that the core
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: definition is still the same. There's a there's a physical part,
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: and I think that that concludes it right there, Dan,
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: But it's gonna get deep, you know what I mean,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: just like you know, the metro sexual I don't I
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: do what. I don't have those What are you talking about?
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: You know what I mean? But I'm just like I think, Uh,
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: I come back on something like this. I've able, I've
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: been able to vent. I'm a better dad, I'm a
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: better husband. Maybe she sees that, maybe she doesn't, but
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: I feel I feel it, and and um, I just
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: got to make sure that she's happy throughout the rest
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: of the year so that she can be pissed for
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: you know, the rest of the what I am hunting.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: So it's better to happen we pissed three or four
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: weeks out of the year as opposed to you know,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: months on end. So that's true, that's true. You know,
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: I've been thinking about this a lot. Oh sorry, any good. No.
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: I was just gonna say, have you there one of
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: you ever like just been sitting there and your tree standing,
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: nothing's going on? Or maybe I think this instance, I
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: was ice fishing and I sitting there, nothing's going on.
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: I picked my phone up, my A D D kicks
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: hand and I instantly pull up something Facebook or Instagram
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: or something, and I looked down and I scrolled this
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: lady post my husband went Elcott in September. Has anybody
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: seen him? Since? It was like January second? And I
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: look up Bradley Yep, time to go home. Halfway through January.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: I'm like, that's one of one of those times when
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: you're like, okay, yeah, I think it's time. Have either
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: you had that experience that where you just social media
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: you found out that you you were just you know,
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: just a father, uh absent father. Have you ever had
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: that been that? I've had a couple of those. One
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: was my wife posted a picture of my truck as
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: I'm backing out to go on my my vacation and
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: she's like, hello, hello fall widow, here I am or
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: something like that. She said, you know, the next two
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: weeks I will be a fall widow. And then um,
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: the the other times you're sitting in a tree stand
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: and then you know it's bad at home when you
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: just get you know, you set your tree stand up,
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: you climb in, you hang your bow up, you set down,
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: take that deep breath you're hunting, and then check your
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: text and it's from your wife and it says, when
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: are you coming home? She knows, she knows when you're
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: coming home. But you know, all she's saying is it's
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: that's that's code for it's crazy as ship here, Please
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: get your ass home. That's a bad feeling your stomach
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: when you see that text. Absolutely, yeah, yeah, I've been
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: thinking about all this a lot. I don't know how
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: it's going to change things for me this year, especially
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: because I've got, you know, a lot on the schedule.
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: So I'm trying to figure out if it's if it's
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: shorter trips, you know, maybe by planning instead like week
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: long trips, they're like four day long trips coming back
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: more often like that, so so it isn't as long
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: periods of times being gone or I don't know. I
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: feel like I've got a lot to learn this year.
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: But but you guys have thoroughly scared me in some
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: ways as you you are. How's this conversation though, because
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: I know you've had it. I don't try to lie
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: and tell me you haven't because I know you've had
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: it when your wife has says something to you about
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: the amount of time you've been gone or you're getting
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: ready to go out again, and then your current counter
- 1:29:36Speaker 1: argument is something along the lines with with this is
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: my business now, like this is how I make my
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: money now, right, I don't. Yeah, I mean I'm trying
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: to learn how to get to use that. I know, Mark,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: you have a legitimate you know you have a legitimate Uh.
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: I was backing on that statement, but like, I'm sure
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: there's comes points where there comes a point where she's
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: just like, yeah, I've heard that too many times. It's
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: not going to count this time. Yeah. No, we definitely
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: have had that conversation. And and so yeah, I do
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: have like the ultimate get out of jail free card
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: for a lot more stuff than a lot of people.
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: Um So because of that, she is like very understanding
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: of a lot of the stuff I do. But they're there.
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: It gets to the point now where there's always one
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: usually it's like the third week of November where if
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: it's been going two and a half months straight, you know,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: you had a trip her two in September, and then
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: you know a lot during October, and then after the
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: big two weeks of the rut. Usually there there finally
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: gets that snapping point. That's where it's like you're just
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: you're you're not even here, like you're not not not
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: not just that you're not physically here. But even when
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: when I'm physically here, she'll say that I'm not even
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: mentally there. And and so there usually is like a
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: reset where we have to have kind of talking and
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: she's like, all right, I really need some help here
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: on stuff for you need to be kind of mentally
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: checked back in. Um. But but for the most part
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: of the rest of the year, you usually she is
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: pretty understanding of the fact that it is business related
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: and she's she's really she's really good about it. UM.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: But I am always trying to like, I don't want
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: to use that as like I don't care what your
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: situation is, Like I don't care how you feel, I
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: don't care how hard is for you. It's my job,
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: so I'm gonna do whatever I want. That's definitely not
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: the tact I take. So even though yeah, it's my job,
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: I am trying. I always am trying to find ways
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: to make sure that I can make it as you know,
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: as doable for her, as non painful for her, um
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: and and and and the thing is that, yes, I
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: am not around as much during the fall, but the
- 1:31:34Speaker 1: benefit of what I do is that I'm present all
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: the time the rest of the year, Like we spend
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: all day together every day, Like I don't have to
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: go to day. Yeah, maybe that's the downstad. Maybe I
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: need to really look at this theory, something like golf
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: or something, get out of the house. So so, yeah,
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: there's pros and kind um, but I am constantly trying
- 1:32:02Speaker 1: to find ways to to to make it work for
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: her to um. So I'm sure this year there'll be
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: some some relearning, some figuring out how to balance things better.
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: And I've always wanted to make sure that I'm carrying
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: my you know, my my side of the bargain too.
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: I never want to just throw off everything on her,
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: like managing the household and the baby and everything. So
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: I'm sure we'll have a new challenge with that this year.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: But we'll figure it out. We've gotten a lot better.
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: I think for us, A big thing was like communicating
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: about it all. Like my wife isn't as much like
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: like my wife is more so she'll kind of just
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: hold on to stuff. She won't bring it up until
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: I forced the issue. So we've kind of I've learned
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: to like forced the issue early on versus like early
- 1:32:44Speaker 1: on in our relationship, I knew like she wasn't super
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: talkative with I could tell that she was irritated about something.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: I knew it was probably about my hunting, but I
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: just didn't want to deal with it. So I was like,
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: I don't want to get in a fighter. I don't
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: want to get you know, have this like uncomfortable conversation.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: So I just let it go. And then we'd go
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: like a week and you could just tell there's like
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: this tension or anythings, um and that was never good
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: and it would lead to some kind of blow up fight,
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: you know, a month later or something. But now I
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: just nip in the butt, so I will just force
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: the issue on. Okay, I know that something's bothering you,
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: it's probably X. Is that is that the case? And
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: if so, let's talk about it, and once we've kind
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: of figured out that we need to do that, UM,
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: that that's related to a lot of things in our relationship,
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: but especially with like hunting and balancing all those kinds
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: of things. Now that we get that stuff out on
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: the table, it's so much better. And then she could
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: be like, Okay, I understand you've gotta be gone for
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: a week for this. I understand you gotta be gone
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: for a week for this, But maybe instead of being
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: gone two weeks straight, what if we what if you
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: came back for three days, Like that'd be really helpful.
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: Or I've got this thing going on, I really could
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: use some help during that period, and like, once we
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: talk through that way, we can find a way to
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: make it work a little bit better for both of us.
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: So that's it's simple. But just communication, I think UM
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: helps absolutely, That's all I got. I guess we out,
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: like I said, five years from out, ten years from
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: I we'll have to reconvene once we have older children
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: and see if any of this helped us out right?
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: Any anything? Don't hate me? Yeah? Your ruined? Any dear?
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: One time? Was any any final thoughts? Uh? And you
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: want to add on this no, I I don't have
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: a lot. I guess I guess I would say that, Um,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: don't be afraid to not kill huge bucks, or not
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: kill as many ducks, or do whatever. If your kid
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: wants to go, take them, man, just take them fish
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: and don't catch anything. Just take something with you if
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: that's what, If that's what, it doesn't matter, you know
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: what I mean. Just take them out. And that's where
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: I'm at now. I used to take things like not
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: that I don't take it serious, but I at this
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: point now what I take serious is any interest they
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: haven't going if they want to go hunt, and I
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: will take them. I'll put them in that tree stand
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: and we will sit there and be cold, go home
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: if we have to, or whatever we have to do.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: That would be my advice. Just to take a man
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: whatever you can, whenever you can. Yeah, I'm right there
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: with you, Dan. Anything else, no, man, just you know,
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: baby steps. Um, that's what I mean. That's that's the
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: only thing that I know how to do. And and
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: and I don't want to ever burn them out because
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: even going once or twice is better than not going
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: at all. And that's that's really what I'm looking forward to. Yeah, Well,
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to experiencing all these things you guys
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: are talking about it. Uh, it was like the scariest
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: thing ever, you know, having a baby, but it has
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: been the coolest thing ever too, and everything, all these
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: new things ahead of us. I just I'm just looking
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: forward to it so much. So raising out towards kid
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: I think is probably gonna be the coolest outdoor adventure
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: of of our lives. Right, So, um, I think so
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: I can't. I can't ask her anything more, And that's
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: gonna do it for us today. So if you haven't yet,
