• 0:06
  Speaker 1: Hey, guys.
• 0:07
Speaker 2: We are back on Normally, the show with normal-ish takes
• 0:09
Speaker 2: for when the news gets weird. I am Mary Katherine Hamm.
• 0:12
  Speaker 3: I'm Carol Markowitz.
• 0:13
Speaker 4: How are you, Mary Katherine?
• 0:15
Speaker 2: I'm doing good. We're having, you know, pre-Halloween festivities. We
• 0:19
Speaker 2: went to a Hogwarts-themed event yesterday. I put my little
• 0:24
Speaker 2: kids in, like, black cardigans that dragged the floor because
• 0:29
Speaker 2: I didn't have robes. And a Waffle House soccer scarf.
• 0:36
  Speaker 3: I love it.
• 0:37
Speaker 2: That's a look. Which house are you in? Gryffindor, Slytherin, Waffle?
• 0:41
  Speaker 2: We're in Waffle.
• 0:43
Speaker 4: I love the Waffle House, actually.
• 0:44
Speaker 3: I would absolutely join Hogwarts to be in Waffle House.
• 0:48
Speaker 2: Right? That's the missing house. That's an SNL skit right there.
• 0:53
Speaker 2: I still have no kitchen and I just ate five
• 0:55
Speaker 2: Slim Jims for lunch.
• 0:57
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 0:57
Speaker 3: Well, you know, once you have a kitchen, though, it'll
• 1:00
Speaker 3: feel so much better than ever before. Like I have
• 1:04
Speaker 3: been cooking nonstop since getting a kitchen back after like
• 1:07
Speaker 3: months and months of renovation.
• 1:08
  Speaker 2: I love it.
• 1:09
Speaker 3: I wish you the same.
• 1:10
Speaker 4: I baked bread this morning. That's where we are.
• 1:12
Speaker 2: Oh, wow. Look at you.
• 1:14
  Speaker 5: I know.
• 1:15
  Speaker 6: I know.
• 1:16
Speaker 3: It's really ever since my I tweeted about this. It
• 1:18
Speaker 3: was like a super viral tweet where I accidentally bought
• 1:21
Speaker 3: $ 18 bread at the farm. But ever since then, I have,
• 1:27
Speaker 3: you know, either thought about where to buy my bread
• 1:30
Speaker 3: a little bit more carefully or baked or whatever.
• 1:33
Speaker 2: Yes, that is smart. That is smart. I like that.
• 1:36
Speaker 2: I love fresh baked bread. I don't make fresh baked
• 1:39
Speaker 2: bread or try to get good at it because I
• 1:40
Speaker 2: feel like that would be a lot of self-sabotage for
• 1:43
Speaker 2: me because I would just eat nothing but.
• 1:45
Speaker 3: Fresh baked bread. I mean, am I going to have
• 1:48
Speaker 3: bread and butter for like all three meals today? Right,
• 1:50
  Speaker 3: of course.
• 1:53
  Speaker 1: Of course.
• 1:53
Speaker 3: Yeah. And the fancy butter was like, buy one, get
• 1:56
Speaker 3: one free at Publix.
• 1:57
Speaker 4: So I stocked up on that. Doing real great around
• 2:00
Speaker 4: here with the fitness.
• 2:02
Speaker 2: Economic and fitness wins all over the place. I can
• 2:05
Speaker 2: feel it. I can feel it. When it's homemade, it's
• 2:08
Speaker 2: good for you. I love it. Exactly.
• 2:10
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 2:11
Speaker 3: It doesn't even count.
• 2:12
  Speaker 4: And I saved $ 18.
• 2:14
Speaker 2: So win-win. Oh my goodness. Well, what's going on?
• 2:20
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 2:20
  Speaker 4: Election's coming.
• 2:21
Speaker 3: I mean, it is coming. Obama has been on the trail,
• 2:25
Speaker 3: and he has been fired up. He loves to go
• 2:29
Speaker 3: low and then go lower.
• 2:34
Speaker 2: Well, look, he is really feeling himself when he's out
• 2:38
Speaker 2: on the trail, as are his fellow party travelers who
• 2:46
Speaker 2: get this little zing of nostalgia when he's out there.
• 2:51
Speaker 2: It all feels very tired to me and dated. And
• 2:55
Speaker 2: I think a lot of Democrats actually feel that way, too.
• 2:57
Speaker 2: But they can't help but sort of time travel to
• 3:00
  Speaker 2: 2008 and 12, which I understand.
• 3:03
Speaker 3: When things were good for him, for them.
• 3:06
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know.
• 3:07
Speaker 3: I thought he's like he talked talking about Donald Trump.
• 3:10
Speaker 3: He said he's got the White House looking like Saddam
• 3:13
Speaker 3: Hussein opened up a cheesecake factory. Now, I am all
• 3:17
Speaker 3: in to make fun of Donald Trump's style. Pre-presidency, I
• 3:22
Speaker 3: found his gold buildings hilarious and ridiculous. But I did
• 3:27
Speaker 3: not get this reference. Meets a cheesecake factory? Okay, Saddam Hussein,
• 3:32
Speaker 3: I get it. Gold, everything, gold toys, fine.
• 3:34
Speaker 4: But what's the cheesecake factory got.
• 3:36
Speaker 2: To do with anything? I think cheesecake factory just indicates gaudy, leaning, tacky.
• 3:43
Speaker 2: And there's been a big discourse now because Evan Barker,
• 3:49
Speaker 2: I believe, said, hey, this is a place that a
• 3:52
Speaker 2: lot of people go for a fancy meal, which is real. Yeah,
• 3:55
Speaker 2: it's like a special treat. For me, Cheesecake Factory and
• 3:58
Speaker 2: Macaroni Grill were top of the heap for a very
• 4:01
Speaker 2: long time. And so there's this discussion of whether this
• 4:04
Speaker 2: joke is out of touch or snobbish. It might be
• 4:08
Speaker 2: a touch. I actually think it was a decent line.
• 4:13
Speaker 3: You know, I've been to Cheesecake Factory and it was
• 4:16
Speaker 3: recently too. So I just don't, what's the style there?
• 4:20
Speaker 3: Is there a Cheesecake Factory gaudy style?
• 4:23
  Speaker 4: I didn't see that.
• 4:25
Speaker 2: Well, now here we've come to a Cracker Barrel discourse discussion.
• 4:31
Speaker 2: Did a Cheesecake Factory revamp in some way? Because in
• 4:34
Speaker 2: my experience, it has been very like marble floors with
• 4:39
Speaker 2: designs on them and sort of like a a faux
• 4:42
Speaker 2: Italian villa situation with a lot of filigree. And so,
• 4:49
Speaker 2: but I don't, it didn't bother me that much on
• 4:51
Speaker 2: the class level, the way that people are talking about it.
• 4:54
Speaker 2: I just don't like his deliver things in sort of
• 5:00
Speaker 2: a cadence that sounds like comedy, but it doesn't quite land.
• 5:04
Speaker 2: Cause he's like, he leaves the space between cheese, cake factory.
• 5:12
Speaker 2: It does just feel like the old hits, and I
• 5:15
Speaker 2: was never a fan of the old hits the first time.
• 5:18
Speaker 4: I never thought he was a great speaker.
• 5:20
Speaker 3: I get that he had a smoothness to him, but
• 5:26
Speaker 3: I always said, you know, name one speech. Give me
• 5:30
Speaker 3: a line that you remember from his speeches. And it
• 5:32
Speaker 3: was always negative lines. It was like, if you like
• 5:35
Speaker 3: your doctor, you can keep your doctor.
• 5:37
  Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good one. You know, that's a great
• 5:40
Speaker 2: segue because he did have a little riff on health care.
• 5:43
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 5:44
Speaker 2: And and he was pretty he was energetic out there.
• 5:48
Speaker 2: So let's hear what he had to say about health care.
• 5:50
Speaker 1: Because after spending the past couple of years just singing
• 5:55
Speaker 1: this president's praises, doing his bidding, they've now come to
• 6:01
Speaker 1: realize everybody's pretty upset about all these broken promises. So
• 6:09
Speaker 1: what are they doing? First of all, they're pretending like
• 6:13
Speaker 1: they've never heard of the guy. Donald who? I'm sorry. Who?
• 6:26
Speaker 1: And then, of course, they're also doing what they always do,
• 6:30
Speaker 1: which is running all kinds of scary ads to make
• 6:33
Speaker 1: you think Democrats are radicals and communists and That the
• 6:37
Speaker 1: woke police will arrest you and force-feed you tofu? You know,
• 6:46
Speaker 1: we are not going to fall for that. They run
• 6:50
Speaker 1: that same okey-doke every election, and we're not going to.
• 6:55
  Speaker 2: It's tired.
• 6:56
  Speaker 5: Tired.
• 6:58
Speaker 1: We're clear about the choice in this election. John Houston
• 7:03
Speaker 1: is a guy who, as Sherrod already mentioned, voted not once,
• 7:08
Speaker 1: not twice, voted 14 times to support the Iran war
• 7:12
Speaker 1: that's helping drive up gas prices here in Ohio.
• 7:16
Speaker 3: He just seems like he has missed this. I think
• 7:20
Speaker 3: probably being home with Michelle as she tells him how
• 7:22
Speaker 3: terrible he is has not been the best time for him.
• 7:26
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 7:27
Speaker 2: What struck me is, you know, over the course of
• 7:31
Speaker 2: these stump speeches, three main things he hits are, one,
• 7:37
Speaker 2: the idea that woke is fake, some sort of fake threat,
• 7:41
Speaker 2: like this never happened. Like, oh, so silly. They think
• 7:45
Speaker 2: they're going to force feed you tofu. Well, they fired
• 7:47
Speaker 2: people from their jobs. and destroyed their lives over vaccine
• 7:53
Speaker 2: uptake that in some cases was mandated. They forced people
• 7:58
Speaker 2: out of schools and jobs and livelihoods during the pandemic
• 8:02
Speaker 2: and violated a bunch of civil liberties. They destroyed people's
• 8:06
Speaker 2: lives and families and jobs over tweets they didn't like.
• 8:10
Speaker 2: I mean, this was all systematic and definitely of the
• 8:14
Speaker 2: left and definitely happened.
• 8:18
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 8:18
Speaker 3: This whole haha woke one was so funny.
• 8:22
Speaker 4: It really wasn't funny.
• 8:24
Speaker 3: And again, it leads us to ask what woke two
• 8:27
Speaker 3: will be like when they have more power.
• 8:30
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 8:31
Speaker 3: Also, the communist line, like you literally have communists in
• 8:35
Speaker 3: your party now. So this this pretense that, oh, ha ha,
• 8:39
  Speaker 3: they think we're a communist. Well, that's because a lot
• 8:42
Speaker 3: of you are a communist, actually.
• 8:43
Speaker 2: Yes, that has a lot to do with it.
• 8:45
Speaker 4: Let's go back to Obamacare.
• 8:46
Speaker 3: The fact was that his original proposal forced you to
• 8:51
Speaker 3: buy health insurance, forced you to buy a product. That
• 8:55
Speaker 3: kind of authoritarianism is... you know, a sign of that leftism.
• 8:59
Speaker 3: It's all part of one thing where they force you
• 9:02
Speaker 3: to do what they want you to do. And I
• 9:04
Speaker 3: don't find any of that funny.
• 9:06
  Speaker 7: No.
• 9:06
Speaker 2: Also, uh, he does the thing where it's like, Oh yeah,
• 9:10
Speaker 2: it's so extreme to want everyone to have healthcare. I
• 9:12
Speaker 2: thought everyone had healthcare.
• 9:14
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 9:15
  Speaker 2: What happened?
• 9:16
Speaker 4: It had your name on it.
• 9:17
Speaker 2: Very affordable healthcare. And yet what has happened is that, uh,
• 9:23
Speaker 2: not only does not everyone have health care because it
• 9:26
Speaker 2: doesn't make sense economically. Why doesn't it make sense economically?
• 9:29
Speaker 2: Because if you are young and healthy and try to
• 9:31
Speaker 2: get health care, it is now so loaded up with mandates,
• 9:34
Speaker 2: thanks to Obamacare, that it is extremely expensive. And your
• 9:38
  Speaker 2: deductible is now $ 13, 000 sometimes.
• 9:40
  Speaker 5: It's a wild, wild uptick.
• 9:40
Speaker 2: The Cost of care has gone up. The cost of
• 9:50
Speaker 2: insurance has gone up. The cost of deductibles has gone up.
• 9:53
Speaker 2: All the things that he told us would curve down
• 9:56
Speaker 2: went up. We also all, many of us lost. plans
• 10:00
Speaker 2: yeah he told us we would not and that's the
• 10:04
Speaker 2: thing about the Obamacare pitch is like he does this
• 10:06
Speaker 2: weird contradiction. The cognitive dissonance is wild, where it's like
• 10:11
Speaker 2: the wild success of Obamacare means that you need to
• 10:14
Speaker 2: put Abdul El-Sayed in office so that he can radically
• 10:18
Speaker 2: change the health care system again to fix all the
• 10:20
Speaker 2: things that Obamacare broke, huh?
• 10:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's amazing. And look, and he liked that Obamacare label.
• 10:27
Speaker 3: A lot of people think that it was you know,
• 10:29
Speaker 3: something negative that the Republicans used. And maybe it started
• 10:33
Speaker 3: that way, but he completely used it himself during his
• 10:36
Speaker 3: 2012 reelection. He loved the fact that his health care
• 10:39
Speaker 3: plan was called Obamacare. And he thought it was a
• 10:42
Speaker 3: wild success. So if it was a wild success, why
• 10:44
  Speaker 3: isn't it anymore?
• 10:46
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 10:46
Speaker 2: It just needs to be totally overhauled and taken over
• 10:49
Speaker 2: by the government, which, as we know, whenever the government
• 10:52
Speaker 2: takes charge of an industry sector, it gets so much cheaper.
• 10:55
  Speaker 2: That's what happens.
• 10:57
  Speaker 3: Better and cheaper.
• 10:58
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 10:59
  Speaker 2: Better and cheaper.
• 11:01
Speaker 4: Trump loves big butts and he cannot lie.
• 11:04
  Speaker 2: True. True.
• 11:07
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 11:07
Speaker 2: Trump can't stop talking about people's butts. Last week he
• 11:09
Speaker 2: was talking about John Husted's.
• 11:12
  Speaker 3: Ass.
• 11:13
Speaker 2: All right. I think we have a quick clip of
• 11:16
Speaker 2: that from last week.
• 11:19
Speaker 7: So he's over here.
• 11:20
  Speaker 3: I'm over here.
• 11:21
Speaker 7: And I'm studying his body. I've never studied the body
• 11:25
Speaker 7: of a man before. It's not my thing. Nothing wrong
• 11:28
Speaker 7: with it, of course.
• 11:29
  Speaker 3: Of course.
• 11:31
Speaker 7: I always proceeded by saying, nothing wrong. But it's never
• 11:34
Speaker 7: been my thing, to be honest with you. But I
• 11:38
Speaker 7: looked at his ass. And then I looked at his legs.
• 11:45
Speaker 7: And I said, his ass is like, it's like a
• 11:49
Speaker 7: pile of muscle. Then I looked at his legs. And
• 11:53
Speaker 7: I said, man, his feet are big. Then I looked
• 11:56
Speaker 7: at his shoulders and I tapped him on the shoulder
• 11:59
Speaker 7: and it actually hurt my hand. It was like a
• 12:02
  Speaker 7: piece of steel.
• 12:06
Speaker 4: Nothing wrong with that.
• 12:08
Speaker 2: Look, I do think whenever you think Trump is just
• 12:12
Speaker 2: doing the old hits, he'll bring something like this and
• 12:14
Speaker 2: you go, oh, that's... That's more detailed than we've had
• 12:19
Speaker 2: in the past. Although Josh Barrow, who is himself gay,
• 12:22
Speaker 2: says regarding the Cheesecake Factory discourse and on top of
• 12:26
Speaker 2: the several butt praising clips. what the president's White House
• 12:30
Speaker 2: signage actually recalls is the signage of the Beverly Hilton,
• 12:33
Speaker 2: which makes sense because Trump is the first gay president,
• 12:35
Speaker 2: but he's Merv Griffin gay, not Andre Leon Talley gay.
• 12:41
Speaker 2: He's many gendered in his appreciation because then he addressed
• 12:46
Speaker 2: Nicki Minaj's butt as well. So here he is doing that.
• 12:51
Speaker 5: By the way, I looked at one hell of a
• 12:53
Speaker 5: beautiful ass before Nicki Minaj. That's That's hard to miss.
• 13:04
  Speaker 5: That's stand-up. That's hard to miss. Okay, I'm going to
• 13:19
Speaker 5: get back to my story. I hope Nikki wasn't insulted,
• 13:22
Speaker 5: but we love Nikki.
• 13:23
Speaker 7: She's been with us.
• 13:24
Speaker 3: For a long time.
• 13:25
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 13:25
Speaker 4: I mean, Nikki, you know, gets a lot of praise
• 13:28
  Speaker 4: for her butt.
• 13:28
Speaker 3: So Donald Trump is recognizing greatness here. Drake has many
• 13:33
Speaker 3: songs about Nikki's butts.
• 13:35
Speaker 2: Yes. There's a great meme template out now where he's
• 13:40
Speaker 2: just standing behind her doing a Bill Clinton-esque glance at Nikki. See,
• 13:46
Speaker 2: now that's bipartisan appreciation. Yeah, that's absolutely right. So I
• 13:52
Speaker 2: will say, look, It's not exactly an economic message, but
• 13:56
Speaker 2: I don't think anybody's mad at all of it. So
• 13:59
Speaker 2: that's what Trump's got going on on the trail while
• 14:01
Speaker 2: he's trying to boost turnout.
• 14:04
Speaker 3: You know, Trump is going to be Trump. He's going
• 14:06
Speaker 3: to talk about whatever he wants on stage. He likes
• 14:09
Speaker 3: to ramble. The audience loves it. I've spoken to people
• 14:13
Speaker 3: who have been to his live events and they absolutely
• 14:16
Speaker 3: love when he goes off on various tangents. That's the
• 14:19
Speaker 3: whole appeal for them. They're not there to hear a
• 14:22
Speaker 3: stump speech. They're there to hear Donald Trump talk about butts.
• 14:28
  Speaker 1: It's true.
• 14:29
Speaker 2: That's how you boost turnout. That's how you do it.
• 14:31
  Speaker 3: I did.
• 14:32
Speaker 2: I had one other clip that I wanted to play
• 14:34
Speaker 2: just because I I want to give us a quick
• 14:37
Speaker 2: update on the Al-Sayed Muslim Brotherhood discussion, which has devolved
• 14:41
Speaker 2: into everyone on the left, even people who should know better,
• 14:44
Speaker 2: center left, saying this is just an attack on Muslims.
• 14:48
Speaker 2: This is an attack on his faith. And I just
• 14:51
Speaker 2: want to say I never once talked about whether Mehmet
• 14:53
Speaker 2: Oz was aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood. I didn't ask
• 14:56
Speaker 2: that he disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood because he had never
• 15:00
  Speaker 2: avowed them.
• 15:01
Speaker 4: So that's exactly right.
• 15:02
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 15:03
Speaker 3: I saw somebody say, you know, Mehmet Oz is a Muslim.
• 15:08
Speaker 3: Abdul El-Sayed is an Islamist. And there is a difference.
• 15:11
  Speaker 3: And that's where I am.
• 15:13
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 15:13
Speaker 2: And so and also just having something in your own
• 15:18
Speaker 2: hand signed, signed an open letter to a Muslim Brotherhood
• 15:23
Speaker 2: candidate who's taking over a whole country in the political
• 15:25
Speaker 2: project that is Islamism and telling him, recommending that he
• 15:29
Speaker 2: should take out the press and like, you know, clamp
• 15:32
Speaker 2: down on everybody. You don't even have to go to
• 15:34
Speaker 2: his relatives to establish this connection, but they're just pretending
• 15:38
Speaker 2: it doesn't exist. And here's what Mike Rogers, his opponent,
• 15:41
Speaker 2: had to say to Kristen Welker of Meet the Press
• 15:45
Speaker 2: this week because she just took El-Sayed's word for it.
• 15:51
Speaker 2: And he has this to say.
• 15:53
Speaker 8: President Trump posted overnight calling Abdul Al-Sayed a Muslim Brotherhood
• 16:00
Speaker 8: jihadist who hates Jews and blacks and Americans. As you know,
• 16:05
Speaker 8: there's no evidence to support any of those claims. Do
• 16:08
Speaker 8: you agree with the president, Congressman?
• 16:10
  Speaker 5: Yes or no?
• 16:13
Speaker 6: Boy, I don't understand the national press. They have to
• 16:17
Speaker 6: work and twist themselves in knots not to understand Abdul's
• 16:23
Speaker 6: relationship with the thinking of the Muslim Brotherhood. When you
• 16:27
Speaker 6: write a letter... It's supporting of Morrissey in 2012 and 2013,
• 16:33
Speaker 6: saying you should purge the police and purge the media.
• 16:37
Speaker 6: And by the way, he will not answer this question.
• 16:39
Speaker 6: Look at the New York Times, who said he just
• 16:41
Speaker 6: won't answer this question. There's a reason. He has getting
• 16:45
Speaker 6: money from groups that support the Muslim Brotherhood, money from
• 16:49
Speaker 6: groups that support Hamas and Hezbollah. That's a thinking issue.
• 16:53
Speaker 6: I wore the uniform in the United States, Kristen, so
• 16:55
Speaker 6: that people could vote any way that they want to
• 16:58
Speaker 6: in this country. It's not how you pray. It's how
• 17:01
Speaker 6: you think. And that has a consequence.
• 17:04
  Speaker 1: OK.
• 17:04
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 17:05
Speaker 8: Congressman, he has denied. and denounced the Muslim Brotherhood and
• 17:10
Speaker 8: denied any ties to them. For context, I just want to.
• 17:13
Speaker 6: He dismissed the question. No, he did not, Kristen. He
• 17:16
Speaker 6: did in an interview with me.
• 17:18
Speaker 5: I don't know why you give.
• 17:19
Speaker 6: This guy a pass.
• 17:19
  Speaker 1: He has not.
• 17:20
Speaker 6: He won't answer the New York Times. He won't answer
• 17:22
  Speaker 6: a local newspaper. No, I just don't buy that. Let's
• 17:25
Speaker 6: talk about the 2012 letter. You're giving him a pass
• 17:27
Speaker 6: on something he should be held accountable for.
• 17:28
Speaker 8: Okay, let's talk about that 2012 letter. I want to
• 17:31
Speaker 8: give folks some context.
• 17:33
  Speaker 6: I get it.
• 17:33
  Speaker 2: I get it.
• 17:34
Speaker 7: Listen, I get it.
• 17:35
Speaker 6: You guys want to defend this guy?
• 17:36
  Speaker 8: No.
• 17:36
Speaker 6: I think it's unbelievable that you would not hold him accountable.
• 17:41
Speaker 8: For his beliefs and what.
• 17:42
Speaker 6: He thinks America ought to look like.
• 17:45
Speaker 8: Let me just give some context to the 2012 letter
• 17:47
Speaker 8: that you're talking about. Egyptians were rising up against a
• 17:50
Speaker 8: brutal dictatorship. Al-Sayed, as you said, he joined that letter,
• 17:54
Speaker 8: which supported the protesters against Egypt's dictator. Not the Muslim
• 17:59
Speaker 8: Brotherhood as a group, but this is what you said, Congressman,
• 18:01
Speaker 8: in 2012. I want to put up what you said
• 18:04
Speaker 8: at the time. Do I think there are moderate Muslim
• 18:07
Speaker 8: Brotherhood individuals we are going to have to reach out
• 18:11
Speaker 8: to and talk to? Yes, but we are going to
• 18:15
Speaker 8: have to watch it carefully. Do you acknowledge that at
• 18:19
Speaker 8: the time in 2012, you were willing to work with
• 18:22
Speaker 8: some moderate members, as you said, of the Muslim Brotherhood?
• 18:27
Speaker 6: That is so much. I wish you would have done
• 18:29
Speaker 6: this for Abdul El-Said. That would have been a great interview.
• 18:31
Speaker 6: But what you're doing now is trying to twist this
• 18:33
Speaker 6: thing to defend your position for letting him lie to you.
• 18:37
  Speaker 2: I don't have a position.
• 18:38
  Speaker 6: Congressman, respectfully, I don't.
• 18:40
  Speaker 2: Have a position.
• 18:40
Speaker 6: Let me tell you what that was about. I'm happy
• 18:42
Speaker 6: to talk to you about what that was about.
• 18:44
Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, they never ask follow up questions of
• 18:48
Speaker 3: Democrats like this ever.
• 18:49
Speaker 2: I mean, so this is this is the allegation is
• 18:52
Speaker 2: against El-Sayed. Right. She has more questions about it.
• 18:57
Speaker 4: Mike Rogers supported the Muslim Brotherhood.
• 19:00
  Speaker 3: That's right.
• 19:00
  Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah.
• 19:02
Speaker 2: I just it's so ridiculous the extent to which people
• 19:08
Speaker 2: will just say this isn't real when there's documented evidence.
• 19:12
Speaker 2: evidence of it. As you know, there's no evidence of this. Yeah, sure,
• 19:15
Speaker 2: you don't have a position. I did appreciate him just saying,
• 19:18
Speaker 2: this is you coming up with a way to defend
• 19:21
Speaker 2: your position, which is that you let him lie to you.
• 19:23
  Speaker 1: Yep.
• 19:24
Speaker 4: That was a great line.
• 19:26
  Speaker 2: He's getting better, which I appreciate. It's a good time
• 19:29
Speaker 2: to get better. Mike Rogers, between the first and second debate,
• 19:33
Speaker 2: improved his performance. I think he nailed her on that line.
• 19:39
Speaker 2: And it's been bothersome to watch people who know better
• 19:42
Speaker 2: just go, this is obviously Islamophobia.
• 19:45
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 19:46
Speaker 3: He's the, you know, that's the race to watch, in
• 19:48
  Speaker 3: my opinion.
• 19:49
Speaker 4: That's the one. I'm most worried about.
• 19:51
Speaker 3: I don't think Tallarico wins in Texas, but I could
• 19:56
Speaker 3: see El Sayed pulling it out in Michigan and hopefully not.
• 20:00
Speaker 2: In Michigan, though, his former competitor, Haley Stevens, who I
• 20:06
Speaker 2: think would have had this easily in the bag. She
• 20:10
Speaker 2: was on a Sunday show this weekend and was kind
• 20:11
Speaker 2: of a little like, you know, like I'm voting for
• 20:14
Speaker 2: the ticket. Just like just like Paxton's ex-wife. It's kind
• 20:19
Speaker 2: of that message. And people are all over her for it.
• 20:22
Speaker 2: And I'm like, I don't know. He kind of just
• 20:23
Speaker 2: spent the whole campaign calling her a dumb broad with
• 20:26
Speaker 2: dual loyalties to Israel. So, yeah, I don't know if
• 20:29
Speaker 2: I'd be excited either.
• 20:30
  Speaker 4: All right.
• 20:32
Speaker 3: We're going to take a short break and be right
• 20:33
Speaker 3: back with more on Normally.
• 20:43
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 20:43
Speaker 2: We are back on normally with some news on the
• 20:47
Speaker 2: transgender politics issue. There happened to be a couple that
• 20:51
Speaker 2: popped for me today. It's interesting as we head into
• 20:55
Speaker 2: this midterm and a lot of the storyline is about
• 20:57
Speaker 2: the loss of power of the formerly ascendant right and
• 21:01
Speaker 2: all that stuff. And perhaps we're going to have a
• 21:05
Speaker 2: condition where everybody gives way to 2020 redux after this pandemic.
• 21:10
Speaker 2: election if Democrats take control. It's nice to see a win,
• 21:13
Speaker 2: which I saw today across my feed at Texas Children's Hospital,
• 21:18
Speaker 2: which has launched a detransition clinic. Under a settlement, they
• 21:22
Speaker 2: must provide, this is according to Vanessa Savage, they must
• 21:27
Speaker 2: provide multidisciplinary detransition-related care free of charge for five years,
• 21:31
Speaker 2: including endocrinology, surgery, primary care, fertility counseling, mental health services,
• 21:35
Speaker 2: social work, and speech pathology. This was, I think, a
• 21:40
Speaker 2: can paxton move to sue these folks um and uh
• 21:46
Speaker 2: this is a good this is good news because if
• 21:48
Speaker 2: you do harm against your oath you should have to
• 21:52
  Speaker 2: help undo the.
• 21:53
Speaker 3: Harm yeah and that's like such an obvious thing but
• 21:57
Speaker 3: to say that during woke one when which obama thinks
• 21:59
Speaker 3: was no big deal you were literally wanting children to
• 22:02
  Speaker 3: kill themselves so.
• 22:04
Speaker 2: Yes and they will continue to tell you that uh
• 22:07
Speaker 2: on the uh trans activist side in fact uh I
• 22:10
Speaker 2: believe AOC got an earful this week from a trans activist,
• 22:14
  Speaker 2: a male-to-female transitioner, who she then informed, she's a girl's girl.
• 22:20
Speaker 3: And I was like, are the girls in the room
• 22:21
  Speaker 3: with us?
• 22:26
Speaker 2: Second story on this front, Brandi Cruz, who is a
• 22:29
Speaker 2: right-leaning independent journalist, out in Seattle, really in the thick
• 22:34
Speaker 2: of things, went to a Portland Thorns match and wore
• 22:38
Speaker 2: an XXXY Athletics t-shirt. Our friend Jennifer Say is the...
• 22:42
Speaker 2: I saw this, yes. of that brand that supports women
• 22:46
Speaker 2: in sports, women in sports. And Stadium Security escorted her
• 22:51
Speaker 2: out bodily, along with other supporters from that match, for
• 22:56
  Speaker 2: wearing these shirts.
• 22:57
  Speaker 3: I don't understand how that's okay.
• 23:00
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 23:01
Speaker 3: What are you like?
• 23:02
Speaker 4: What else are you not allowed to wear?
• 23:04
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 23:05
Speaker 2: Well, this is the thing. And every every event where
• 23:07
Speaker 2: they are given troubles about their T-shirt messaging, which is,
• 23:11
Speaker 2: of course, cast as like over overly political and that,
• 23:15
Speaker 2: you know, they use some random rule or why they
• 23:18
Speaker 2: can't stay there. You'll always see very overtly political messages
• 23:21
Speaker 2: on everyone else's shirts, too. They're just of the left.
• 23:25
  Speaker 3: Exactly.
• 23:25
  Speaker 2: That's OK.
• 23:26
  Speaker 3: It doesn't matter.
• 23:30
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know.
• 23:31
  Speaker 3: I don't know how that's acceptable. And I don't know
• 23:34
Speaker 3: if she's going to pursue some kind of... I don't
• 23:37
Speaker 3: know if she could sue or anything. I guess they
• 23:38
Speaker 3: could do whatever they want at their own venue. But
• 23:41
  Speaker 3: it's wrong.
• 23:42
  Speaker 4: It's just wrong.
• 23:43
Speaker 3: I saw her being yelled at. I saw her being
• 23:44
Speaker 3: spit at. It was really inappropriate that they let that
• 23:48
Speaker 3: happen to her. Right.
• 23:50
Speaker 2: And if there are no political displays allowed, then the
• 23:54
Speaker 2: rules should... apply to everyone and not just in a
• 23:59
Speaker 2: t-shirt with a rather actually neutral message on it, which
• 24:01
Speaker 2: is that men and women exist.
• 24:03
  Speaker 3: Right, right.
• 24:06
Speaker 2: Well, Brandy will continue. Yeah, I imagine Brandy will continue
• 24:09
Speaker 2: to cover this issue closely as she has an outlet
• 24:12
Speaker 2: to do so and a pretty big platform. And I
• 24:16
Speaker 2: just think it, again, it illustrates two things, the tendency
• 24:20
Speaker 2: of the left to really overplay its hand and want
• 24:23
Speaker 2: to go back to this very authoritarian vibe that it
• 24:26
Speaker 2: had in 2020 to 2023 in service of all sorts
• 24:30
Speaker 2: of extremism. And two, that, like, gosh, they can't handle
• 24:34
Speaker 2: a person being in a stadium who disagrees with them.
• 24:39
  Speaker 4: That's right.
• 24:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's definitely a signature of that left.
• 24:48
Speaker 2: One last thing on this front. Josh Turek, who's running
• 24:50
Speaker 2: for Senate in Iowa... which is a red Midwestern state
• 24:55
Speaker 2: that is looking less red than it should in this year, 2026,
• 24:57
Speaker 2: because of some of the backlash against economic issues and
• 25:01
Speaker 2: tariffs and diesel prices, etc. He is moderating in the
• 25:06
Speaker 2: closing parts of his Senate run against Ashley Henson, who
• 25:11
Speaker 2: is a very strong candidate out there, but it's a
• 25:13
Speaker 2: close race. He's moderating on boys and women's sports. Here's
• 25:18
Speaker 2: his ad. He's an athlete himself.
• 25:20
Speaker 9: As a kid in a wheelchair, I faced my share
• 25:22
Speaker 9: of bullying. That's why I believe that no Iowan should
• 25:25
Speaker 9: face discrimination. As a Paralympian, I also know it's important
• 25:28
Speaker 9: to have rules. It's why I oppose males competing in
• 25:31
Speaker 9: female sports, something that is already illegal in Iowa. I'm
• 25:34
Speaker 9: against taxpayers paying for sex changes too. Anyone tells you
• 25:37
Speaker 9: any different is lying. I'm Josh Turek.
• 25:40
Speaker 3: I approve this message.
• 25:42
Speaker 9: It's time to stop the nonsense from both extremes. and
• 25:45
Speaker 9: start to focus on lowering costs for Iowans.
• 25:50
  Speaker 2: Wild, right?
• 25:51
Speaker 3: Like, that's something that did not exist in woke one
• 25:54
Speaker 3: at all, where anybody would step up on the Democratic
• 25:57
Speaker 3: side and say, this is not appropriate. This is not acceptable.
• 26:01
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 26:01
Speaker 2: And since it has become slightly more acceptable, those who
• 26:05
Speaker 2: have stepped out have been punished severely, including a representative
• 26:10
Speaker 2: who later recanted his very reasonable position. So one wonders
• 26:15
Speaker 2: what Turek will get.
• 26:18
Speaker 3: Or maybe it doesn't matter in Iowa, you know, or
• 26:21
Speaker 3: I don't know. I always think that any Democrat that
• 26:24
Speaker 3: doesn't walk the line perfectly gets shunned so hard that
• 26:28
Speaker 3: they either leave politics or they become a Republican.
• 26:31
Speaker 2: Right. Annie Andrews in South Carolina, who's running against Lindsey
• 26:34
Speaker 2: Graham's sister, also ran an ad that moderated on this issue.
• 26:40
Speaker 2: It does tell me that counter what the left will
• 26:43
Speaker 2: tell you, which is like, no, no, this isn't, it's
• 26:45
Speaker 2: a very small issue. It's a very small population. No,
• 26:48
  Speaker 2: this is a, it's a gauge for whether a Democrat
• 26:52
Speaker 2: can be even slightly normal on a very popular issue
• 26:56
Speaker 2: and whether they will get hounded out of this position,
• 26:58
Speaker 2: even if they truly hold it. And that's the worry
• 27:01
Speaker 2: with someone like a Turek or an Annie Andrews, is
• 27:03
Speaker 2: that I appreciate the attempt at moderation. A couple weeks
• 27:07
Speaker 2: before an election, is it real? Does it matter? Will
• 27:10
Speaker 2: you be kicked out of it as soon as you're
• 27:11
  Speaker 2: in office?
• 27:13
Speaker 3: That's the best point about it, that if you're only
• 27:16
Speaker 3: doing it to win an election, that might not be
• 27:20
  Speaker 3: good enough here.
• 27:21
Speaker 2: But I do like to have more people say it.
• 27:23
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 27:24
  Speaker 3: I mean, that's the thing.
• 27:25
Speaker 4: We're in this tough thing where.
• 27:27
Speaker 3: We don't believe them, but we also want them to
• 27:30
  Speaker 3: get to sanity faster. So it's it's a really it's
• 27:34
Speaker 3: a double edged sword because I do think Democrats need
• 27:37
Speaker 3: to be speaking up and saying, look, reality is reality.
• 27:40
Speaker 3: I mean, if we could just all agree on what
• 27:42
Speaker 3: something is, what a woman is, what a man is,
• 27:45
Speaker 3: that would be super. But they are only doing it
• 27:49
Speaker 3: for the election and not for anything else.
• 27:52
  Speaker 6: So.
• 27:53
Speaker 3: All right, we're going to take a short break and
• 27:55
Speaker 3: be right back with more on Normally. We are back
• 28:02
Speaker 3: on Normally where Marissa Meyer, and you may remember her name,
• 28:07
Speaker 3: she had a stint at Yahoo that was fairly controversial.
• 28:12
Speaker 3: She is now working on a new AI assistant called Dazzle.
• 28:17
Speaker 3: And she had this interview with the New York Times
• 28:20
Speaker 3: that my jaw actually dropped as I read it. Here
• 28:23
Speaker 3: it goes. Late last year, Marissa Mayer was struggling with
• 28:26
Speaker 3: what felt like an impossible task. Her daughter, Marielle, was
• 28:30
Speaker 3: turning 10, and Marielle's teacher wanted three bullet points summarizing
• 28:34
Speaker 3: what made her special. Mayer, the former chief executive of
• 28:37
Speaker 3: Yahoo and a pioneer at Google, where she was the
• 28:40
Speaker 3: first female engineer, likes cracking a hard problem. But she
• 28:44
Speaker 3: felt overwhelmed by the range and complexity of potential answers.
• 28:48
Speaker 3: So Mayer asked her personal AI assistant, Dazzle, Within a
• 28:51
Speaker 3: few seconds, Dazzle delivered an answer. It came back and
• 28:54
Speaker 3: was like, your daughter is empathetic, creative, and an animal lover,
• 28:57
Speaker 3: Mayer said. She thought it was perfect. I thought it
• 29:01
  Speaker 3: was terrifying.
• 29:07
  Speaker 4: I mean, I am pro-AI.
• 29:09
Speaker 3: Like, yeah, use AI to make your life better so
• 29:13
Speaker 3: that you're able to hang out with your daughter and
• 29:15
Speaker 3: then able to describe.
• 29:16
Speaker 2: Her in three words.
• 29:18
  Speaker 9: Right?
• 29:18
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 29:20
Speaker 4: Like, use it for the grocery.
• 29:22
Speaker 3: Lists so that you spend time with your daughter and
• 29:25
Speaker 3: know that she's into pets. Like, it's just what?
• 29:29
Speaker 2: I found it shocking that someone would tell a major
• 29:33
Speaker 2: news outlet that this was their move. I get these
• 29:36
Speaker 2: little questionnaires about my kids every year to start the year.
• 29:39
Speaker 2: It's part of my bit of the homework when everything
• 29:43
  Speaker 2: goes back.
• 29:44
Speaker 3: I make my husband do it, but sure.
• 29:45
Speaker 2: Sometimes you have a busy day and you're like, oh,
• 29:47
Speaker 2: I got to do the questionnaire on my kid. But luckily,
• 29:51
Speaker 2: shall we say, I've done the homework.
• 29:54
Speaker 3: You know your children.
• 29:56
Speaker 2: Children. I don't need to cram for the questionnaire about
• 29:59
  Speaker 2: my children. And I do, I also think it's a
• 30:02
Speaker 2: nice opportunity to be able to tell someone my experience
• 30:05
Speaker 2: with my child and the things that make them cool
• 30:07
Speaker 2: because they haven't met them yet. And so to miss
• 30:12
Speaker 2: that opportunity and to replace it with this just seems
• 30:15
Speaker 2: so bleak. And yes, as you say, I use AI,
• 30:21
Speaker 2: sometimes enthusiastically for things like, for instance, will you make
• 30:24
Speaker 2: me a practice test for chapter seven of this book
• 30:27
Speaker 2: of math or social studies we've been working on? So
• 30:30
Speaker 2: I have those generated when I used to generate them
• 30:33
  Speaker 2: by hand.
• 30:33
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 30:34
Speaker 2: And that is, really helpful to me, but it's helpful
• 30:37
Speaker 2: to me to spend time with my kids and to
• 30:40
Speaker 2: free up time to do cooler things with them.
• 30:44
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's amazing. I don't remember who said it, or
• 30:49
Speaker 3: I might be butchering the line, but it was like,
• 30:51
Speaker 3: AI is not there to make art for you while
• 30:54
Speaker 3: you do tasks. It's there to do the tasks while
• 30:57
Speaker 3: you make art. It's really not meant to be your friend.
• 31:02
Speaker 3: And look, empathetic creative and an animal lover like that
• 31:06
Speaker 3: could describe any of our children no like what child
• 31:10
Speaker 3: is not empathetic creative and an animal lover I I'm
• 31:13
Speaker 3: not sure I met one of these.
• 31:14
Speaker 2: Yet Marissa's like generic Marissa's like nailed it as far
• 31:19
  Speaker 2: as I know.
• 31:19
Speaker 3: That sounds good right And then so the piece goes
• 31:24
Speaker 3: on because it's really just an ad for this, you know,
• 31:26
Speaker 3: AI thing called Dazzle. And so they go along with
• 31:30
Speaker 3: some other things that Dazzle could do. It can analyze
• 31:32
Speaker 3: images and users camera rolls to answer questions, perform tasks
• 31:36
Speaker 3: and make suggestions. Mayors aiming to build an AI tool
• 31:39
Speaker 3: that can handle everyday hassles like buying a pair of
• 31:41
Speaker 3: pants you took a photo of or finding a birthday
• 31:44
Speaker 3: present for your picky spouse.
• 31:46
Speaker 4: Now, they lost me again there. I was I'm fully
• 31:50
Speaker 4: with it for your.
• 31:52
Speaker 3: Analyzing images in the camera roll to answer question, performing tasks, whatever,
• 31:57
Speaker 3: finding a pair of pants that you liked. Okay. Birthday
• 32:00
Speaker 3: present for your spouse? I don't know.
• 32:03
Speaker 4: You know what I kind of think of this as?
• 32:04
Speaker 3: Like, think of AI as the woman in your husband's
• 32:09
Speaker 3: office who, like, is fine, but, like, you don't need
• 32:11
Speaker 3: them being super close.
• 32:13
Speaker 4: Would you like her picking out your birthday present?
• 32:16
  Speaker 2: No?
• 32:16
  Speaker 1: Then.
• 32:17
Speaker 3: Then no, you know, AI shouldn't be doing it either.
• 32:20
Speaker 3: Anything that you wouldn't want the woman in your husband's
• 32:23
Speaker 3: office involved in, AI is the same. Like, would you
• 32:26
Speaker 3: want him asking her, like, describe my daughter? No, then
• 32:29
Speaker 3: don't do it to AI either.
• 32:31
Speaker 2: Well, and also I just think, like, your brain needs practice, right?
• 32:35
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 32:36
Speaker 2: You have to do some things. You have to continue practicing.
• 32:40
Speaker 2: to use your brain. And most studies show that as
• 32:43
Speaker 2: you get older, being both physically and mentally nimble allows
• 32:49
Speaker 2: you to retain instead of lose. And if we are
• 32:52
Speaker 2: all just deciding to hand over all of the thinking,
• 32:55
Speaker 2: even in the most personal areas of our lives, to
• 33:00
Speaker 2: the robots, I don't think that will go well for
• 33:02
Speaker 2: our brains, even if the robots are perfectly benign.
• 33:05
Speaker 4: They will, our brains will atrophy very quickly. You need
• 33:08
  Speaker 4: to practice.
• 33:09
Speaker 3: You need to use it. I mean, I don't know.
• 33:12
Speaker 3: I'm not even at the stage where I can trust
• 33:15
Speaker 3: AI to deliver me the correct answers on like factual stuff.
• 33:18
  Speaker 4: I cannot imagine.
• 33:20
Speaker 3: Turning over, I don't know, things I want to be
• 33:23
Speaker 3: working on, things I want to be thinking about.
• 33:25
Speaker 4: You know, save that for yourself. Save that for your
• 33:28
Speaker 4: actual brain. Don't give it to your AI.
• 33:30
  Speaker 1: Yep.
