- 4:20Speaker 1: Today by the by musician k Wetzel. Hey, tell um
- 4:24Speaker 1: a little about yourself. Man, Uh yeah, I'll play music. Um,
- 4:30Speaker 1: you know who else plays music? Chester next to you?
- 4:34Speaker 1: A dabbled man, not even close to the scale of
- 4:40Speaker 1: what you guys, I want to I want to lay
- 4:42Speaker 1: out a scenario for you know, we'll get on with
- 4:44Speaker 1: our introductions. Um, I want you to think, Oh, either
- 4:46Speaker 1: muster up a piece of advice. Chester learned how to
- 4:50Speaker 1: play guitar a couple of years ago because he wanted
- 4:52Speaker 1: to be able to serenade his wife at their wedding. Okay,
- 4:56Speaker 1: one thing to let do another. And we did a
- 4:58Speaker 1: live show and Chester out up and warmed up the
- 5:01Speaker 1: crowd with some singing mediocre. Then me, I'm just laying
- 5:07Speaker 1: out the facts, dude. Then there's a band, there's a
- 5:12Speaker 1: there's a musician we've had on um from the band
- 5:16Speaker 1: Trampled by Turtles, and they have invited Chester down to
- 5:19Speaker 1: Atlanta to open on what's the date, December one, So
- 5:26Speaker 1: keep getting six days before the anniversary of Pearl Harbor
- 5:30Speaker 1: at the Buckhead Theater. So he's gonna go down his
- 5:35Speaker 1: second ever, like right, and he's gonna go down and
- 5:38Speaker 1: open and then he's do a set for how many people?
- 5:41Speaker 1: How big is that place? It's not huge, but big
- 5:44Speaker 1: enough for me. I think people like, we almost played Bookhead.
- 5:48Speaker 1: We're supposed to, Yeah, we were supposed to. Then COVID
- 5:51Speaker 1: hit and kind of funk everything up. So what's your advice?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Give Chester a great piece of advice. Stop playing music.
- 6:02Speaker 1: You know, it's it's a lot of fun. Man, it's
- 6:04Speaker 1: just the ground of it is. It's really hard unless
- 6:07Speaker 1: you're like super super super passionate about it. Just stay married.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And you know, well, I about some kids. I like,
- 6:16Speaker 1: he just did that. He's not even supposed to be
- 6:20Speaker 1: here yet, and he's like old yeah Benjamin Button. Oh man,
- 6:27Speaker 1: I just like playing music. I do not see myself
- 6:32Speaker 1: making a career out of it. So, you know, just
- 6:35Speaker 1: once you get a once in a lifetime opportunity to
- 6:37Speaker 1: open up for somebody. Tramplin was trampline Turtles trampled by turtles,
- 6:41Speaker 1: trampled My dad calls him stampeding turtles. Uh so there's
- 6:48Speaker 1: your advice. Just or stop just stop, give up. Also
- 6:55Speaker 1: joined today by Max barta good morning, Um I can't remember.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Not related to tread barter, not even spelled the same way,
- 7:05Speaker 1: No spelled the same way, but not related to tread barter.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Phil Phil got a little testy this morning. Well here's
- 7:15Speaker 1: a here's a piece of peek behind the curtain. My
- 7:17Speaker 1: I mixed audio for a living and they put me
- 7:20Speaker 1: by the front door, and everyone walks in and catches up,
- 7:24Speaker 1: talks about their weekend, what they're having for dinner that night. Uh.
- 7:28Speaker 1: And I can't hear a goddamn thing, Karen, Uh. JP,
- 7:35Speaker 1: tell everybout what you do? JP? Is this my um? So?
- 7:40Speaker 1: I do UM video and stuff for co UM. I'm
- 7:46Speaker 1: kind of a creative director sometimes. I've done a few
- 7:48Speaker 1: music videos tour with the guy and all the We're
- 7:52Speaker 1: just a big family. And are you from a music background? Um, well,
- 7:58Speaker 1: a little bit. My dad's a song writer, and so
- 8:01Speaker 1: I kind of grew up around it, um and so
- 8:05Speaker 1: I guess I just naturally kind of came. I don't
- 8:08Speaker 1: know how I got into it, but I just did.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It just kind of worked out that way. Is that
- 8:13Speaker 1: row probably one of the most famous wedding songs that
- 8:16Speaker 1: would think for like your father, father and father and
- 8:19Speaker 1: daughter dances like you look wonderful tonight first? That's cool? Yeah, yeah,
- 8:32Speaker 1: I had to. Anytime someone figures it out, will just
- 8:35Speaker 1: bring it up in rooms quiet. I'll bust that one
- 8:39Speaker 1: out real quick. Yeah, has that about that song? And
- 8:41Speaker 1: it's like someone will either be like, oh I love
- 8:44Speaker 1: that song and they'll be like, that's cool, but yeah,
- 8:49Speaker 1: Kylie Archer is your first time on the show, Carl,
- 8:51Speaker 1: I think second, but the first one was just a
- 8:54Speaker 1: I think, just a regular with all of us, just
- 8:57Speaker 1: our staff, So first time with guests. Kylie's just a
- 9:01Speaker 1: man off the street because she's a cold wettele fan.
- 9:03Speaker 1: So we thought we would bring down someone who's been
- 9:05Speaker 1: at the concerts. I appreciate you've got any critiques for
- 9:08Speaker 1: how he could do a better concert. No, no, like
- 9:12Speaker 1: everything about wasn't like the restrooms and it was easy
- 9:17Speaker 1: walk out of this room. No. We were in San Antonio.
- 9:21Speaker 1: We were at the Cowboy Hall. Cowboys. Yes, um uh
- 9:26Speaker 1: there was a Santa getting a tattoo. I just like
- 9:29Speaker 1: that remember so vaguely that was that was read South Hall.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Me and him. We did a like two weeks acoustic
- 9:37Speaker 1: tour and yeah, we we have a guy that travels
- 9:40Speaker 1: around and tattoos and stuff. And we were sitting like,
- 9:43Speaker 1: I think it'd be awesome when Santa Claus is getting
- 9:45Speaker 1: his asked at it on stage, you know how well
- 9:49Speaker 1: we're up here singing and uh, it was good. It
- 9:53Speaker 1: was fun. Mrs Claus probably wouldn't have whatever. Uh, andre
- 10:00Speaker 1: know your last name? R O. C H A sir? Yeah, No, No,
- 10:06Speaker 1: what's up with We'll tell everybody what you do it,
- 10:08Speaker 1: then explain why you're you're hoodie. All right, We'll start
- 10:11Speaker 1: with what I do. I'm coach, tour manager. I've been
- 10:15Speaker 1: with him for five six years or so. I was
- 10:19Speaker 1: his drummer at one point for three or four years
- 10:22Speaker 1: and then made the transition into tour manager. And you
- 10:25Speaker 1: guys knew each other back in high school. Yeah, it
- 10:27Speaker 1: was hundred ducks in high school. Yeah, and he bought
- 10:31Speaker 1: what kind of amil? Would you guys buy twelve nines
- 10:35Speaker 1: at Walmart? Honestly? Yeah. But we've been we've been buddies
- 10:41Speaker 1: for a long time and we've been working together even longer. So,
- 10:45Speaker 1: like JP said, just one big family. We travel around
- 10:47Speaker 1: the world together and have a lot of fun doing it,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and you just got to collect the money. I do.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I do at the end of the night, sometimes before
- 10:55Speaker 1: the even show starts. Hopefully we can have a little
- 10:57Speaker 1: more fun. But yeah, as part of the job, one
- 10:59Speaker 1: of them many things for sure. And you got a
- 11:01Speaker 1: tupac hoodie I do. Now, is it definitively established who
- 11:06Speaker 1: who shot him? No? They say it was sugar Night,
- 11:10Speaker 1: but nobody there's I've watched a million documentaries and still
- 11:13Speaker 1: I'm I'm obsessed with like the that Biggie Tupac thing
- 11:16Speaker 1: that happened. And I mean I've I've watched the movies,
- 11:19Speaker 1: the documentaries, to listen to the albums all the way through,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and they say it was the L A. P. D.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know. So there's still a question.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Mark lingers over. Yeah, I still think about it sometimes
- 11:30Speaker 1: he goes to bed thinking about it everything. Uh, did
- 11:35Speaker 1: you guys have fun duck hunting yesterday? We had a blast.
- 11:37Speaker 1: That was a lot of fun out. I gotta telling you,
- 11:41Speaker 1: like the way just how everything was laid out, you know,
- 11:44Speaker 1: the snow, you know, not being able to see him
- 11:47Speaker 1: and so they got right in our face. You know
- 11:49Speaker 1: it was and my magnificent duck coom skills run a
- 11:53Speaker 1: lot of men. You know you're shooting good good State
- 11:56Speaker 1: Champion duck caller, Texas Champion. H uh oh hany tight knot.
- 12:04Speaker 1: We gotta make a couple of announcements. Just enjoy your coffee.
- 12:08Speaker 1: How don't you know where you're having this? Our trivia
- 12:10Speaker 1: shirts available now. I mean, I guess I knew about that.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I kind of forgot about it. The hell's the hold up?
- 12:18Speaker 1: So the trivia shirt where it's a squirrel riding uh
- 12:21Speaker 1: soccer with a flag that says game on Suckers. You
- 12:25Speaker 1: get it. It's a squirrel riding a soucker. It's so
- 12:28Speaker 1: good right there in the corner the mediator trivia shirt
- 12:33Speaker 1: Game on Suckers? Is it like available available? Is a
- 12:36Speaker 1: limited number? It's available today? I mean there is like
- 12:39Speaker 1: a limited number, but it's not like really really really limited,
- 12:44Speaker 1: but it's really limited. Oh hey, check this out the
- 12:48Speaker 1: guy cold. Just so you understand guys right in, people
- 12:51Speaker 1: right in and now and then it's something that's interesting,
- 12:54Speaker 1: so we share it. You can picture how this goes. Okay,
- 12:58Speaker 1: this guy had a guy roll in. He had something
- 13:02Speaker 1: called a thoracic syndrome. This plays into a lot of things.
- 13:05Speaker 1: It plays into dogs, plays into bones, cooking, It hits
- 13:11Speaker 1: a lot of things that are of interest to the show.
- 13:15Speaker 1: He has something called thorastic syndrome. Pretty common deal. The
- 13:18Speaker 1: fixes the going and remove the person's top rib because
- 13:24Speaker 1: in many cases the two top ribs are impinging on
- 13:27Speaker 1: the blood vessels and nerve endings in that area. The
- 13:32Speaker 1: surgeon went a little sideways. The surgeon actually cut his
- 13:35Speaker 1: frenetic nerve, so he wanted to bud some heavy duty
- 13:38Speaker 1: pain killers for a while. But he had asked for
- 13:40Speaker 1: his rib back. Okay, I already know where this is.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You read the headline my dog ate my rib and
- 13:49Speaker 1: you're kind of like not buying it. But here him
- 13:53Speaker 1: out after reading I believe that this dog ate his rib.
- 13:58Speaker 1: He wants to rib back. He doesn't anticipate because he
- 14:01Speaker 1: he says he's gonna make some jewelry or some sh
- 14:03Speaker 1: it out of it, just to be like, check that out.
- 14:06Speaker 1: It's my rib part of me. Oh for sure. We
- 14:08Speaker 1: had a guy sitting in the chair I'm sitting in
- 14:10Speaker 1: right now that had his own amputated arm euro mounted.
- 14:15Speaker 1: He can walk around his own arm. I mean everybody does.
- 14:20Speaker 1: But what I should say, what I should say is
- 14:23Speaker 1: he could walk around without his arm or bring it
- 14:26Speaker 1: with him. So he's got this rib and it comes
- 14:29Speaker 1: back to him in a presumably alcohol. It comes back
- 14:33Speaker 1: to him in a fluid and he says he was
- 14:35Speaker 1: expecting it all to be cleaned up, but it's not clean.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Still got a lot of meat, on it. No. Later,
- 14:43Speaker 1: he wants to dry it out so he can scrape
- 14:47Speaker 1: it up and puts it in his oven. Okay, this
- 14:55Speaker 1: isn't some stupid joke. I don't know. We don't traffic
- 14:57Speaker 1: in that kind of stuff. Um lives with his mom
- 15:01Speaker 1: and dad. I forgot to mention that he puts in
- 15:08Speaker 1: the oven to dry it out so he can scrape
- 15:10Speaker 1: it clean. And he says when his parents came home,
- 15:14Speaker 1: they thought it smelled good in the house and asked
- 15:17Speaker 1: what was cooking. He showed them the rib. They weren't
- 15:22Speaker 1: that happy, but he said after a little scraping, it
- 15:25Speaker 1: came out bright white. At one point, as he's cleaning it,
- 15:30Speaker 1: he leaves it on the counter and his dog got it.
- 15:35Speaker 1: It's gone. Now goodness. How old was this guy Nashville, Tennessee.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Well that also kind of brings it home. You gotta
- 15:47Speaker 1: get him out to the show. Yeah, I know, but
- 15:50Speaker 1: you'd want to have him bring his rib, but he
- 15:52Speaker 1: can't co Would you do something like that? Uh No, probably, honestly,
- 15:59Speaker 1: you know, I goes beards depending on how drunk I was,
- 16:02Speaker 1: probably so yeah, exactly the type of thing that you
- 16:06Speaker 1: would do. Another guy rolled in with the ethics question.
- 16:11Speaker 1: This is a good one. I love at Washington State.
- 16:13Speaker 1: There's two Washington things coming up here. Uh, there's a
- 16:18Speaker 1: Washington State where I'm lucky enough to have many acres
- 16:20Speaker 1: of state BLM and d n R property very close
- 16:22Speaker 1: to my home. Recently, I was scouting a piece of
- 16:27Speaker 1: public land and came across multiple illegal bait sites for
- 16:30Speaker 1: blacktailed deer. This gentleman is very liberal with upper case letters.
- 16:37Speaker 1: So super liberal means no, I mean he uses upper
- 16:41Speaker 1: case letters a lot where they don't belong. There's a
- 16:44Speaker 1: thing and I want to do a seminar at it
- 16:46Speaker 1: at this company. There's a thing where people think that
- 16:48Speaker 1: if you're writing like black bear, you upper case black bear,
- 16:54Speaker 1: you'd only upper case English sparrow. The e would be
- 16:59Speaker 1: upper case because which is a proper noun. But you'll
- 17:01Speaker 1: see where people like bighorn sheep and they capitalize it
- 17:04Speaker 1: just kills me, you know, uppercase blacktail deer. Uh, multiple
- 17:11Speaker 1: legal bait sites for blacktail deer. We have both a
- 17:13Speaker 1: gallon limit and proximity limit of base stations in my state.
- 17:18Speaker 1: They got salt licks and feeders. Okay, and he makes
- 17:21Speaker 1: a note of it. Here's this question, knowing that someone
- 17:25Speaker 1: else is illegally baiting the area, does that make it
- 17:28Speaker 1: unethical for him to hunt that area? Ethical? Unethical? I
- 17:34Speaker 1: would say no, I think if he I think if
- 17:38Speaker 1: he were hunting the actual bait station, that's a no
- 17:42Speaker 1: no get away from there. And I mean, you didn't
- 17:46Speaker 1: set those up, you have, yeah, that I'm just we've
- 17:53Speaker 1: heard of people getting busted for for not realizing that
- 17:57Speaker 1: they're hunting where someone's been baiting water. They just think
- 18:01Speaker 1: it's like a great spot and ducks are pouring in
- 18:04Speaker 1: and then it's baited and no one, No one cares
- 18:07Speaker 1: to hear you talk about whether or not you did it,
- 18:09Speaker 1: knew about it, whatever, Like you are doing it. You're
- 18:12Speaker 1: hunting over bait and that's it. So if he's talking
- 18:15Speaker 1: about ethics, let's say you have a spot you hunt
- 18:18Speaker 1: and that's where you hunt, and you go there before
- 18:20Speaker 1: work and some guy comes and makes an I legal
- 18:22Speaker 1: bait pile. So he's supposed like not hunt now, of
- 18:24Speaker 1: course not. But a game warden might not want to
- 18:28Speaker 1: hear a whole lot about who did what, you didn't
- 18:32Speaker 1: do it, but you're just sitting there shooting, dear. I
- 18:35Speaker 1: would I would just call the authorities and let him know.
- 18:39Speaker 1: Be like, I don't want to stop hunting, so I'm
- 18:41Speaker 1: hunting little ways away from these but heads up bait
- 18:45Speaker 1: piles out. Yeah, yeah, that's probably the right thing to do.
- 18:47Speaker 1: There was this on public. I met public and he's
- 18:52Speaker 1: even saying, is it wrong for me to hunt someone
- 18:54Speaker 1: else's bait site. I feel like he's already hunting the
- 18:57Speaker 1: bait stick came from the stand. That sounds like a
- 19:03Speaker 1: master plan. I think he's confusing ethical with uh, legally
- 19:11Speaker 1: prudent ethics and legal prudent ethical Situationally, I would say, yeah,
- 19:16Speaker 1: you can't like be someone else doing something illegal. Shouldn't
- 19:20Speaker 1: make it that you can't go about your business. But
- 19:21Speaker 1: at the same time, no one's gonna care about your
- 19:23Speaker 1: version of the story when you get caught sitting over
- 19:26Speaker 1: in a legal bait station. That was easy. Now here's
- 19:29Speaker 1: another one that guys wanted. Okay, a guy wrote in
- 19:32Speaker 1: kind of bent out of shape by how he was
- 19:34Speaker 1: treated by some game wardens. He was driving home. He's
- 19:38Speaker 1: in Washington from an unsuccessful hunting trip with his wife
- 19:41Speaker 1: and kids. It was after dark. We drove up on
- 19:44Speaker 1: a good sized buck standing perfectly still a few feet
- 19:46Speaker 1: off the road. I stopped so we can look at it.
- 19:49Speaker 1: It looks very real, and he did that like trump,
- 19:54Speaker 1: where all the letters are up the case. Very real,
- 20:00Speaker 1: but it's standing soul still. My wife and I debate
- 20:02Speaker 1: whether it's a decoy. I get out of my truck
- 20:04Speaker 1: and throw a small rock toward it, trying to get
- 20:07Speaker 1: it to move. As I do, it turns its head.
- 20:10Speaker 1: I'm convinced it's real. Suddenly I'm blinded by a spotlight
- 20:15Speaker 1: from behind me. I hear a voice yellow, keep it moving.
- 20:19Speaker 1: I add that inflection, but there's an exclamation point. I
- 20:24Speaker 1: was trying to bring it home. Keep it moving. I
- 20:27Speaker 1: look around, confused at first, and suddenly realized it's a
- 20:30Speaker 1: robotic deer, and there's a game ward and controlling it,
- 20:32Speaker 1: trying to catch people shooting after dark. I related this
- 20:35Speaker 1: to my wife, and after a few more seconds, I
- 20:37Speaker 1: hear again, more angrily, keep it moving, Get out of here.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I get in my truck and keep driving. Around a
- 20:44Speaker 1: corner about a hundred yards away, I see a second
- 20:46Speaker 1: fishing game rig. I stopped and rolled down my window.
- 20:49Speaker 1: The agent confirms that it is a decoy, and he
- 20:52Speaker 1: shows me the controller he uses it to make it move.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I guess you have two questions. Do you have any
- 20:59Speaker 1: insight into the legality of this practice? Lots of It's
- 21:03Speaker 1: very common practice, kran If you go back into there's
- 21:06Speaker 1: a deep cut, get that reference deep cut. There's a
- 21:11Speaker 1: deep cut where of this of this show where we
- 21:16Speaker 1: had on head Warden and Idaho named Eric Crawford. You
- 21:22Speaker 1: want to do a quick scan here Eric Crawford, and
- 21:26Speaker 1: he laid out many adventurers using robo deer in robot
- 21:31Speaker 1: turkeys and lays out all the legality and all the
- 21:34Speaker 1: entrapment stuff. Oh is that episode fifty two real deep cut? Yeah? Wow?
- 21:39Speaker 1: What was it called? That's like way back when we
- 21:43Speaker 1: didn't really have good titles for the shows. Sorry, it
- 21:47Speaker 1: just says Uppard, Bitter Root, Comma Montana. So it's just
- 21:51Speaker 1: like a place name. Yeah, it's like you Yanni and
- 21:55Speaker 1: Remy six we get into the whole robot dude. No,
- 22:04Speaker 1: it's been litigated so much. It's definitely not entrapment because
- 22:07Speaker 1: it is a very common practice. And uh, he explains
- 22:11Speaker 1: why it's not entrapment. Isn't that kind of like like
- 22:15Speaker 1: with undercover cops, Like if you're just masquerading as a
- 22:20Speaker 1: drug dealer seller. It's like somebody could be in your
- 22:24Speaker 1: place who wasn't actually undercover. So it's like hopefully driving
- 22:28Speaker 1: down the road when it's pitch asked dark, you know that,
- 22:31Speaker 1: shooting lights over so you know what they you know
- 22:34Speaker 1: what he you know what? As I recollect, Um, it's
- 22:37Speaker 1: one of my first memories, like you have your first
- 22:39Speaker 1: memories around six. Yeah, one of my core memories is
- 22:44Speaker 1: that game Warden on that episode long ago explaining that
- 22:49Speaker 1: the entrapment question they don't use booner sized deer. Oh okay,
- 22:54Speaker 1: like you can't put on the side of the road
- 23:00Speaker 1: because the judge will be like, well yeah, but I'm
- 23:06Speaker 1: never gonna explaining that. It's got to be like you
- 23:09Speaker 1: definitely would want it, but it's not so crazy that
- 23:12Speaker 1: it would bring about Yeah, it's been heavily litigated. It's
- 23:15Speaker 1: not so insane that a normal person wouldn't be able
- 23:19Speaker 1: to resist the urge to shoot it in the dark.
- 23:22Speaker 1: You know. Yeah, he lays all that out, so I
- 23:26Speaker 1: suggest this listener, um, go look on that, and then
- 23:30Speaker 1: he wants me to opine on the behavior of the
- 23:32Speaker 1: game ward Maybe I'm overacting, overreacting but it soured the
- 23:36Speaker 1: experience quite a bit. If I'm on public land, I
- 23:38Speaker 1: should be able to stop and look at animals whenever
- 23:40Speaker 1: and wherever I want. And I don't like the idea
- 23:42Speaker 1: of the woods being filled with robotic deer. Filled with
- 23:45Speaker 1: robotic deer. There's one there. There's one on the side
- 23:51Speaker 1: of the road for like a couple of hours. So
- 23:56Speaker 1: I don't think it's legs moved, just his head probably.
- 23:58Speaker 1: I don't know that the woods are filled. But um,
- 24:02Speaker 1: the law enforcement yelling at me, um, you know, late
- 24:07Speaker 1: at night, just felt him a little off. I agree.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Why do you got to be like I think it
- 24:11Speaker 1: seems to be like polite as ship, Like here's a guy.
- 24:15Speaker 1: He's like, oh, there's deer. He's not shooting at it.
- 24:17Speaker 1: You think you'd be like, oh, hey, partner. Um, I
- 24:20Speaker 1: know it's a confusing as hell, but that's a robotic deer.
- 24:23Speaker 1: We're trying to catch poachers. And if you don't mind, yeah,
- 24:27Speaker 1: Like it's like, I don't know why I get testy
- 24:30Speaker 1: with like that one was he was he was there
- 24:33Speaker 1: to get somebody, for sure. I just don't see why
- 24:35Speaker 1: you get tested. I like how he got out and
- 24:38Speaker 1: like picked up a couple of just gonna make sure, okay,
- 24:43Speaker 1: I don't. I have one friend that stopped to look
- 24:46Speaker 1: at a robot deer one time and they're looking out
- 24:48Speaker 1: the window and all of a sudden scared the ship
- 24:51Speaker 1: out him because someone's tapping on the other window, and
- 24:54Speaker 1: they just asked him to move on. But then he
- 24:56Speaker 1: get testy yelling at a bowl order. He's probably the
- 25:00Speaker 1: come by. It's probably just like I gotta catch someone soon. Yeah,
- 25:04Speaker 1: And he might have had it out for some defarious
- 25:06Speaker 1: folks that he knew we were gonna be rolling down
- 25:08Speaker 1: that road any minute. Now, someone out too. But still
- 25:11Speaker 1: you could just be real, just like use your use
- 25:13Speaker 1: your use your bedroom voice. Yeah, anybody you want to
- 25:20Speaker 1: creep the guy out there? All right, So you guys
- 25:32Speaker 1: yesterday this for this question for co and Dree, I
- 25:35Speaker 1: want to get back when you guys are youngsters. You
- 25:38Speaker 1: guys grew up in a only caught a portion of this.
- 25:41Speaker 1: You guys grew up in a um chicken raising area,
- 25:47Speaker 1: Chicken Capital of the World, Pittsburgh, Texas at one point,
- 25:52Speaker 1: I don't know the end up setting out. Yeah they
- 25:55Speaker 1: got yeah, I got bought it about Tyson back whenever.
- 25:58Speaker 1: Probably we were in middle school or high school. But yeah,
- 26:01Speaker 1: Pilgrim's chicken, uh bow Pilgrim. He's from Pittsburgh. Um, A
- 26:08Speaker 1: lot of the a lot of the chicken houses. I
- 26:10Speaker 1: mean pretty much all of our friends owned chicken houses,
- 26:13Speaker 1: you know, so so they produced chicken for this chicken
- 26:17Speaker 1: producing outfit. Yeah, and just you know, distributed all over
- 26:20Speaker 1: the world and ship but chicken. Yeah yeah. Yeah. You
- 26:24Speaker 1: you come into Pittsburgh and you smell chicken ship, you know,
- 26:27Speaker 1: like like, oh I love it. You know. It's it's
- 26:32Speaker 1: like you live there your life. You're like, oh, it's
- 26:34Speaker 1: just another day. Everybody else comes in and like what
- 26:36Speaker 1: the funk is going on in this? I get that
- 26:39Speaker 1: with the dairy farms and the same thing. Yeah, but
- 26:43Speaker 1: that gets like a well, all that too much of
- 26:46Speaker 1: that ship allays that ammonious smell, man, you know what
- 26:48Speaker 1: I mean? Yeah, I kind of like it. Though. You
- 26:51Speaker 1: go back and you're like, I'm home, and you are
- 26:54Speaker 1: you found some work in the chicken business A little
- 26:57Speaker 1: bit like assassination worker. My granddaddy he worked, uh like
- 27:02Speaker 1: he was like electrician electrician, so he would go whenever
- 27:07Speaker 1: either they were tearing down or build a new and
- 27:09Speaker 1: he will go in and not all the electricity and
- 27:11Speaker 1: then whatever. They would take out all the chickens. You know,
- 27:14Speaker 1: they'd be ten or fifteen of them left that had
- 27:17Speaker 1: no a broke foot or you know. We would just
- 27:21Speaker 1: he would take us to go pick up dead chickens
- 27:23Speaker 1: and then we get there and they'd be a couple
- 27:25Speaker 1: of them love and he's just like, go have at
- 27:27Speaker 1: and sell me have my buddies. You just go around
- 27:29Speaker 1: and I don't know, and it's such a normal thing,
- 27:31Speaker 1: like you It wouldn't be like we got a buddy
- 27:34Speaker 1: that we both grew up with, Lee McCollum. We'd go
- 27:36Speaker 1: to his dad's to get some money because we needed
- 27:38Speaker 1: some money for something, and hey, boys, come over here,
- 27:41Speaker 1: pick up a couple of dead chickens. Yeah, I'll give you.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Were like all it was just kind of normal girl
- 27:48Speaker 1: t to clean out the dead chicken or something, you know,
- 27:50Speaker 1: whatever it was that day, or move these move these
- 27:52Speaker 1: bags here from here to there. Whatever. But it was
- 27:55Speaker 1: just normal. I mean, we had a lot of chicken
- 27:57Speaker 1: growing up. That's what held me. The next question, even
- 28:00Speaker 1: though you're living around that and smelling that you're still
- 28:02Speaker 1: eating those and like most people will be like, oh,
- 28:04Speaker 1: you know, I could never do it after seeing all that.
- 28:06Speaker 1: But oh you know, I see a lot of worse.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I guess eat a lot worse. Uh, how do you
- 28:13Speaker 1: guys cook ducks? We just breast them out. I cut
- 28:16Speaker 1: them in a little nuggets now from up him. How
- 28:20Speaker 1: Uh just batter them and throw them in a little
- 28:22Speaker 1: bit of a little bit of old man. Just make
- 28:24Speaker 1: a fried wild like wild duck fried duck strip. It's
- 28:27Speaker 1: like a chicken fried duck. I'll I'll put them on
- 28:31Speaker 1: the grill before and the him like put them like tacos. Yeah,
- 28:34Speaker 1: I'd like to have them like you're talking about, Like
- 28:36Speaker 1: I never saw that, Like I've never I've never had
- 28:39Speaker 1: a drum before, never had before. But like we said,
- 28:42Speaker 1: like y'all have, I've never seen that much fat all before.
- 28:46Speaker 1: So back home, I think we talked about it. Like
- 28:49Speaker 1: I think by the time they get to Texas there's
- 28:51Speaker 1: a war out, like they've already stut fits today. I'm
- 28:56Speaker 1: fat on them yesterday, you know. So I think if
- 28:59Speaker 1: we if we did have birds like that, we probably
- 29:01Speaker 1: would cook them that way. But it's not a whole
- 29:04Speaker 1: lot of I hunted last winter down not in Texas,
- 29:09Speaker 1: but down in South Louisiana, and I couldn't believe that
- 29:11Speaker 1: birds weren't like they are where they got all that fat.
- 29:14Speaker 1: But when we get them, when we get ducks, so
- 29:17Speaker 1: our youth duck season is it's like I think, late September. Yeah,
- 29:21Speaker 1: late September is youth duck season. And at that point
- 29:27Speaker 1: there's nothing. I mean, it's like paper mache. Their skin
- 29:31Speaker 1: full of pin feathers, no fat, real thin skin, and
- 29:34Speaker 1: you just brought will breast and take the thighs by
- 29:38Speaker 1: now though, like you said, man, they got three eights
- 29:41Speaker 1: of an inch of just beautiful fat on them. And
- 29:45Speaker 1: so at that point I like to cook them like
- 29:46Speaker 1: that because I like the fat on that ship. Hey, Steve,
- 29:49Speaker 1: for our listeners, can you let them know what like
- 29:51Speaker 1: that is? Like? How you cut that out? Oh? What
- 29:54Speaker 1: what coal is referring to is? I actually stole it.
- 29:59Speaker 1: I stole the idea you from when I was in
- 30:01Speaker 1: I went to University Montana and for some reason they
- 30:05Speaker 1: came out with a University Montana Wild Game Cookbook because
- 30:08Speaker 1: some guy that ran the cafeteria or something was into
- 30:11Speaker 1: I don't I don't never understood it, but I had
- 30:12Speaker 1: the book and I made some things out of it.
- 30:15Speaker 1: There was like a rolled meat loaf of spinach and
- 30:17Speaker 1: pine nuts and ship in it that I liked a lot.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Then there was a uh way that he liked to
- 30:23Speaker 1: cut his ducks. And you plucked the duck. You don't
- 30:28Speaker 1: pluck the back. You plucked the breast kind of down
- 30:31Speaker 1: to whereas bat kind of squares off. Now you don't
- 30:35Speaker 1: need to go all the way to the spine, but
- 30:36Speaker 1: you plucked the side down and plucked the drumstick down.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Then you go to like breasts out, but you're taking
- 30:44Speaker 1: the breasts up with the skin on it. And then
- 30:47Speaker 1: you go down and pop his ball joint at the
- 30:48Speaker 1: head of his femur, and you wind up with a breath.
- 30:51Speaker 1: This isn't all of our cookbooks we always show it.
- 30:55Speaker 1: You wind up with a breast with the skin on it,
- 30:59Speaker 1: the thigh and drums the drumming with the skin all
- 31:03Speaker 1: the way around it, and they're held together by the skin.
- 31:06Speaker 1: And it's a beautiful little package. People to look at
- 31:08Speaker 1: it like want to eat that ship when you get
- 31:10Speaker 1: it cleaned up, nice beautiful. And that's how I always
- 31:14Speaker 1: always like ducks. This time you'd have a lot of fat.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I clean them one way and I cook them one way.
- 31:20Speaker 1: You said, what do you you say? You pans serum
- 31:22Speaker 1: getting any thumb, and I get. I turned my oven
- 31:24Speaker 1: on four. I get a pan ripping hot, like a
- 31:28Speaker 1: cast iron whatever, cast iron pan, let's say, ripping hot,
- 31:30Speaker 1: a little bit of oil on it, put salt and
- 31:32Speaker 1: pepper on both sides, and I put it skin down
- 31:35Speaker 1: on that pan, and maybe five four or five minutes
- 31:39Speaker 1: or whatever, just I keep checking it. When it's gold
- 31:41Speaker 1: and crispy, I flip them skin side up and stick
- 31:45Speaker 1: them in my oven. And I put them in my oven,
- 31:47Speaker 1: not even nowhere near ten minutes, pretty rare, right rare
- 31:52Speaker 1: in the middle, crispy fat. Then we serve it with
- 31:55Speaker 1: like like last night, Well, there's some where my kids made.
- 32:01Speaker 1: They picked a bunch of raspberries and they make a
- 32:04Speaker 1: recipe which is basically raspberries and ship loads of sugar
- 32:09Speaker 1: and they call ice cream topping. It's pretty good. Anyways,
- 32:13Speaker 1: we serve that stuff they made with the ducks last night.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Everybody likes ducks like chut knees. I was trying to
- 32:21Speaker 1: explain shut to my kids last night. Is it like
- 32:23Speaker 1: a glaze it's just like no, I just just yeah,
- 32:26Speaker 1: just spread it out a little bit, a little bit
- 32:27Speaker 1: on it. Sweet is good. You know. I was trying
- 32:30Speaker 1: to explain shot it was someone's like a growing up jelly. Yeah,
- 32:36Speaker 1: I'm gonna try that. Like like in East texts, we
- 32:38Speaker 1: fry everything, So I don't think. I don't think enough
- 32:42Speaker 1: people that we grew up hunting with knew how to
- 32:44Speaker 1: cook it that way. That's why we would always cut
- 32:46Speaker 1: the breast out. And I've never even heard of that.
- 32:50Speaker 1: So when you said that, we were like, that sounds great,
- 32:53Speaker 1: and then you explained it definitely, definitely not. I'm sending
- 32:56Speaker 1: three home with you. I brought him to work today,
- 33:00Speaker 1: got the ducks from yesterday. He's already got I really
- 33:04Speaker 1: wish my kids hadn't gotten sick, because I was looking
- 33:07Speaker 1: forward to having you guys for dinner, cooking a bunch
- 33:08Speaker 1: of ducks last night schedule. Um, that's a good way
- 33:14Speaker 1: to eat ducks. I would do that. And then when
- 33:16Speaker 1: I was little we had them, we would sometimes breast
- 33:19Speaker 1: him out and fry him in a deep friar, But
- 33:21Speaker 1: the main way is we would pluck the whole thing.
- 33:25Speaker 1: And then my mom had caught up apples and whatnot
- 33:29Speaker 1: and stuff them, put foil over, put them in the oven,
- 33:34Speaker 1: take the foil off in the end. We ate a
- 33:35Speaker 1: lot of ducks that way, especially wood ducks, stuff with
- 33:38Speaker 1: like apples and what else is she putting their never
- 33:45Speaker 1: never sit Remember remember remember that salad that like if
- 33:52Speaker 1: you went to a church pot luck when you were
- 33:53Speaker 1: a kid, would be like the main thing everybody brought,
- 33:57Speaker 1: like apples and mayo and ray sasons. You know what
- 34:00Speaker 1: I'm talking about, Like marshmallow, isn't it. I thought it
- 34:03Speaker 1: was like like green and cherry jello. When you were
- 34:09Speaker 1: down to Twin Lake United Methodist Church for a potlock,
- 34:12Speaker 1: there was like some things that were probably gonna be there.
- 34:15Speaker 1: A lot of people are gonna bring deviled eggs, a
- 34:18Speaker 1: lot of people are gonna bring jello with marshmallows and
- 34:22Speaker 1: cut up grapes in it. And a lot of people
- 34:24Speaker 1: are gonna bring apples smother than mayo with walnuts and raisins.
- 34:29Speaker 1: So my mom would basically make a Waldorf salad minus
- 34:32Speaker 1: the mayo and it was good and stuff the duck
- 34:36Speaker 1: with it. We had a lot of ducks like that.
- 34:38Speaker 1: So there's marshmallow, no, no, no no, marshmallting Abrosia. I didn't
- 34:50Speaker 1: know what to twin Church Ambrosia. Yeah, that was a
- 34:57Speaker 1: very powerful their dish and I was a kid man.
- 34:59Speaker 1: It was just coming off of like like my Grandma
- 35:02Speaker 1: Rose would make a dish that I still don't understand.
- 35:06Speaker 1: It was jello and in the jello was minted up
- 35:11Speaker 1: celery and walnuts. Interesting, it was like national lamps, like
- 35:17Speaker 1: like the like the cat and the kibbles and ship
- 35:20Speaker 1: or whatever in South jell. So what the hell are
- 35:26Speaker 1: we talking about eating ducks? Well, Dre when you talk
- 35:31Speaker 1: about air frying the duck, like, I'm still not checked out,
- 35:35Speaker 1: what does that mean? Even mean? I mean, I'm a
- 35:37Speaker 1: big fan of the air fried just because on the
- 35:39Speaker 1: bus we don't have an oven because you gotta live
- 35:40Speaker 1: on a bus. Yeah we we we live on the bus.
- 35:43Speaker 1: But I've got so used to it that I bought
- 35:45Speaker 1: one for the house and now like anything you can
- 35:47Speaker 1: cook in the oven or like smaller stuff like I'll
- 35:50Speaker 1: buy like I got their steak in it the other
- 35:52Speaker 1: day it went bad and then um, I cooked chickens
- 35:56Speaker 1: the best chicken I ever made, Like I cooked it
- 35:58Speaker 1: in their friar. I'm just you can do anything in there.
- 36:01Speaker 1: It's eating salt pepper. Throw it in there. However the
- 36:04Speaker 1: heat and then boom you ever put like a piece
- 36:06Speaker 1: of deer meeting there. Not yet there, I'm not fully
- 36:10Speaker 1: convinced on there far yet it's misleading. It's it's just
- 36:14Speaker 1: a little oven, just a little bit of them. He's
- 36:16Speaker 1: it's like a little convection of it. Right, it's got
- 36:18Speaker 1: like perfect sounds better. I got one. I should have called.
- 36:24Speaker 1: We should have had Dave Williams on to ask Dave
- 36:27Speaker 1: Williams this question. Dave Williams is lawyer, buddy of ours.
- 36:29Speaker 1: He's like a real specialist in fishing game law. Here's
- 36:32Speaker 1: a great question we encountered yesterday. These boys live on
- 36:35Speaker 1: a tour bus. So you clean ducks, right, and to
- 36:41Speaker 1: transport ducks, they're supposed to have a head or a
- 36:44Speaker 1: fully feathered head or a wing still attached, but they
- 36:47Speaker 1: live and eat on the bus. So right, so here
- 36:53Speaker 1: you are crossing state lines, but your ducks are all
- 36:55Speaker 1: cleaned out. Would be a great case if you got
- 36:58Speaker 1: caught in boss that and then got exonerated based off
- 37:02Speaker 1: the fact that you live on the bus and it
- 37:04Speaker 1: is your house. It's home. It's like where you brought
- 37:09Speaker 1: it to, where are you plan on eating it? But
- 37:11Speaker 1: that thing just happens to move. And to add to
- 37:14Speaker 1: the argument, his name is legally on the bus, like
- 37:18Speaker 1: the the titles and stuff, so like he like, legally
- 37:21Speaker 1: he could drive the bus. Not that we whatever want
- 37:23Speaker 1: that situation, but it's like I came from you buying
- 37:25Speaker 1: r V. It's under your name. You can drive it
- 37:28Speaker 1: because you are the owner and you're you're on the
- 37:30Speaker 1: title of the vehicle. So you would win that case
- 37:33Speaker 1: hands down. Similarly, let's say you move, so you take
- 37:39Speaker 1: your freezer and put it in a moving truck and
- 37:41Speaker 1: move it across state lines. No one's gonna no one's
- 37:43Speaker 1: gonna bust you for moving waterfowl across state lines. How
- 37:47Speaker 1: often do you think your buddy that's attorney deals with
- 37:50Speaker 1: that kind of like those cases where like you could
- 37:52Speaker 1: there's two sides to it. Uh, we bring up a
- 37:55Speaker 1: lot of really esoteric violations to him, and he'll point
- 37:58Speaker 1: out that no one. I don't want to put words
- 38:01Speaker 1: in Dave's mouth, but basically these aren't commonly used things.
- 38:05Speaker 1: But when you've done something real bad and they want
- 38:08Speaker 1: to really cook the books on you, so that when
- 38:10Speaker 1: you plea it down, you're still screwed. Then they start
- 38:13Speaker 1: coming in with all the like esoteric, Oh and you
- 38:17Speaker 1: did this, and you did that, and you did this,
- 38:19Speaker 1: you do that, and then you got like twelve counts
- 38:23Speaker 1: out when you have ducks like yeah, And then he said,
- 38:26Speaker 1: that's when a lot of that stuff gets utilized. You've
- 38:28Speaker 1: been up to something no good and they really just
- 38:32Speaker 1: want to make the stack. Yeah, then you get the
- 38:34Speaker 1: violation stacked on you. How'd you guys meet because you
- 38:39Speaker 1: I heard you. He met you because he wanted to
- 38:41Speaker 1: meet you because you partied a lot. Well, it was like, yeah,
- 38:45Speaker 1: So I had a bunch of buddies that were so
- 38:48Speaker 1: towns in these Texas, they're so close to each other,
- 38:50Speaker 1: you know, and pretty much everybody knows each other. And
- 38:53Speaker 1: usually whenever Pittsburgh will go to a mel pleasant or
- 38:56Speaker 1: pleasant go to Pittsburgh, or if you went outside of
- 38:59Speaker 1: your town, you're more or less gonna get into a fight.
- 39:02Speaker 1: In high school, you know, And uh, I was gone
- 39:06Speaker 1: for something for the weekend or something, and he came
- 39:07Speaker 1: down to Pittsburgh with a bunch of his boys, and
- 39:10Speaker 1: my buddy was throwing a party and uh one of
- 39:13Speaker 1: his buddies was about to fight one of my buddies,
- 39:15Speaker 1: and Drake come up to my guys. He's like, hey,
- 39:18Speaker 1: let's I'll know some some ship's about to go down.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Just had a little heads up. I appreciate it, and
- 39:24Speaker 1: she as ship did. And uh, they come back. He's
- 39:26Speaker 1: called Monther. They're like, dude, you gotta just cat dre'
- 39:28Speaker 1: school as fun. You know. He he told us about
- 39:31Speaker 1: you know what was about to go down, and he's
- 39:33Speaker 1: a dog man. I was like, hell yeah then, so
- 39:35Speaker 1: we got just after that, we got to start hanging
- 39:38Speaker 1: out man, and he liked to hunt. We all hunted together,
- 39:41Speaker 1: so and you guys were into music and hunting at
- 39:44Speaker 1: that time. I remember seeing another another reason this was
- 39:48Speaker 1: when either my into my Space or early Facebook, when
- 39:52Speaker 1: whenever you shot ducks at the time, he'd be like
- 39:53Speaker 1: for wood ducks and had a great duck right you
- 39:56Speaker 1: posted every Saturday because you don't have school, what did
- 39:59Speaker 1: your Friday wake ups already to go duck hunting. His
- 40:01Speaker 1: buddies would always have the post of all the ducks.
- 40:03Speaker 1: And I was like, man, this guys the party that
- 40:06Speaker 1: get up and kill ducks. And and I was like,
- 40:08Speaker 1: I gotta hang out these guys and man they had
- 40:11Speaker 1: killed today like me and Hammer. One of those guys
- 40:13Speaker 1: I'm talking about Taylor. We're both in his wedding a
- 40:16Speaker 1: couple of months ago. Like, we still all hunt together
- 40:18Speaker 1: once a year. We go down to a Maila and
- 40:20Speaker 1: hunt with my buddy Toby, and I mean, it's just
- 40:22Speaker 1: pretty cool that we all it started from duck hunting
- 40:24Speaker 1: and fifteen years later we are we're hunting in my space,
- 40:28Speaker 1: that's right. But what kind of wanted was at the time.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I remember Tom was one of my friends, So what
- 40:32Speaker 1: a duck? What? What? What was like a typical duck
- 40:35Speaker 1: hunting scenario for you guys back then? Uh, usually walk
- 40:39Speaker 1: about a mile or two in later in mud up
- 40:43Speaker 1: knees into just uh, we would hunt. We would hunt
- 40:46Speaker 1: like flooded fields. Yeah, a bunch of lose a lot
- 40:50Speaker 1: of you know, not a whole lot of saying it
- 40:53Speaker 1: like flooded timber. But um, when we found it whatever
- 40:57Speaker 1: we did have flooded timber, we get into it. But
- 41:00Speaker 1: I mean we would go we hunt les a lot
- 41:02Speaker 1: as well. Becare's so many legs around these Texas. I
- 41:05Speaker 1: mean we would get done with a football game on
- 41:06Speaker 1: Friday night, get all the gear, put it in the boat,
- 41:10Speaker 1: drive out to the spot, because you know, everybody wanted
- 41:13Speaker 1: to get there like three or four in the morning.
- 41:15Speaker 1: And we would put out our spread, you know, and
- 41:18Speaker 1: sleep in the boat overnight and then wake up Saturday
- 41:21Speaker 1: morning so people wouldn't get into our spread, you know.
- 41:24Speaker 1: And oh, dude, we're mad at him back then. You know,
- 41:27Speaker 1: like we're not as mad now, uh as we worry
- 41:31Speaker 1: back then, but yeah, we were. It was hardcore. It was.
- 41:34Speaker 1: It was kind of you know, you duck hunt in
- 41:35Speaker 1: the morning and then uh go sitting a deer stand
- 41:38Speaker 1: during the evening. So did your dad hunt? Yeah? Yeah,
- 41:41Speaker 1: big big hunter. Man was he got He got you
- 41:43Speaker 1: into it? Uh yeah, not so much duck hunting, but
- 41:46Speaker 1: deer hunting for sure. Yeah, he's a big deer hunter.
- 41:49Speaker 1: Uh yeah, man, always been about it. I saw you
- 41:54Speaker 1: my mom. You're like, so your mom doesn't like huting.
- 41:56Speaker 1: It's not that she doesn't like hunting, it's just like
- 41:58Speaker 1: she just doesn't like she's uh, she's more like go
- 42:01Speaker 1: to the beach and drink a couple of pens lots,
- 42:04Speaker 1: you know, are your mind? Dad's a little together yeah. Still,
- 42:08Speaker 1: and where do they live? So? Yeah, So I have
- 42:11Speaker 1: a construction company up in Lubbick that my dad runs,
- 42:14Speaker 1: so he moves back and forth from Lubbock to Pittsburgh
- 42:17Speaker 1: back in Ease, Texas. And my mom still works for
- 42:21Speaker 1: the school in Pittsburgh. Uh and you pointed sandhill cranes
- 42:25Speaker 1: up by the love Yeah. Yeah, that's good time right
- 42:28Speaker 1: by the sky. Yeah. Do you fish much? Yeah? I
- 42:31Speaker 1: do a lot of fishing, man, a lot of fishing.
- 42:34Speaker 1: We did, Uh, we were just up here actually, I
- 42:36Speaker 1: was telling Karim we we did. We're supposed to fish
- 42:41Speaker 1: the Gallatson, but I think we ended up fishing the
- 42:43Speaker 1: Madison because then you'll have that the big the flood,
- 42:46Speaker 1: the big right and run off. So the water was
- 42:48Speaker 1: kind of shitty, but I mean we caught caught some
- 42:50Speaker 1: good browns. Uh. But yeah that was what to two
- 42:54Speaker 1: months ago? Two or three months ago? Yeah? Yeah, fishing.
- 42:59Speaker 1: But uh, did you like that or did you find
- 43:01Speaker 1: it a little a feat No? I love fly fish.
- 43:04Speaker 1: I've been doing it for I got into it probably
- 43:06Speaker 1: five or six years ago. Like I'm still nowhere near
- 43:10Speaker 1: you know where I'd like to be on it. But
- 43:13Speaker 1: fought fish is just not the biggest thing in Texas.
- 43:15Speaker 1: You know. Uh, it's more about you know, largemouth bass
- 43:19Speaker 1: and going off into the cold gulf and uh stuff
- 43:24Speaker 1: like that. So you know, you know you should do
- 43:26Speaker 1: down in Texas. Man, I should introduce you. You should
- 43:28Speaker 1: go out with you should go out fishing, uh redfish
- 43:33Speaker 1: and and trout with Gt. Vans And you ever met him,
- 43:36Speaker 1: you guys probably hit it off absolutely. Where's he out
- 43:39Speaker 1: of He fishes out of Rockport? Rockport? Yeah, my one
- 43:42Speaker 1: of my guitar players, his wife. Um, their family owns.
- 43:47Speaker 1: I don't know if they own to just me and
- 43:49Speaker 1: them on a play. I know they got a boat
- 43:51Speaker 1: down there. Yeah, I think they have a closer close
- 43:53Speaker 1: to Rockport, but YadA cod fishing. Yeah. JT is fun
- 43:56Speaker 1: to be out in the water with because he's like
- 43:57Speaker 1: a real student of the water. He's one of those
- 44:00Speaker 1: guys who knows everything about fishing like that. Yeah he
- 44:03Speaker 1: Um doesn't he have girls too? Yeah, he's got he's
- 44:07Speaker 1: very good fisherman and uh, he's like a real cheerleader
- 44:10Speaker 1: for the area. But then he gets a couple of
- 44:13Speaker 1: cocktails and then he gets into like what's not right
- 44:17Speaker 1: about the area, So you get a real. Well you
- 44:19Speaker 1: get you get all the love and in the evening
- 44:22Speaker 1: you get all the fear man. So you get the
- 44:24Speaker 1: full package of you get the full package of the
- 44:27Speaker 1: Gulf Coast. You get like all the things to celebrate
- 44:30Speaker 1: and then all the things to be worried about. Um,
- 44:32Speaker 1: so it's a complete tour hanging out there. I like
- 44:34Speaker 1: to just do it already. Did you know Chester that
- 44:37Speaker 1: Um remember the Remember we had the cody from Whiskey Myers.
- 44:42Speaker 1: These guys are talking about him, sending out like, uh,
- 44:45Speaker 1: what's he got a new He's got a new lure. Yeah,
- 44:47Speaker 1: he's got uh, I can't remember what it's called. You
- 44:49Speaker 1: guys got a bunch of top water frogs and he's
- 44:52Speaker 1: send a bunch of it out to the house to day.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Yeah he's he's a big time and he's a big
- 44:59Speaker 1: hunter fisher, but he he spends a lot of time
- 45:02Speaker 1: on the water. Um. And yeah, he just come out
- 45:04Speaker 1: with a prototype. It's actually really good. I was telling
- 45:07Speaker 1: you I was just throwing it in my pool and
- 45:08Speaker 1: you know, working it like they have coady. It's pretty good,
- 45:12Speaker 1: pretty good frog. But those guys sponsor some like elite
- 45:17Speaker 1: bass guys or a elite bas Gut Whiskey Myers. I'm
- 45:20Speaker 1: pretty sure. Yeah, they fished a lot with Jason Cohn
- 45:23Speaker 1: on on fork, same guy. We uh we run around
- 45:26Speaker 1: with two. So yeah, forks, have you ever fished fork
- 45:29Speaker 1: like fork in Texas? No, it's it's the lake, that's
- 45:34Speaker 1: that's the hammer there. Bro, when when did you when
- 45:39Speaker 1: you were growing up and you'd like to hunt, Um,
- 45:44Speaker 1: tell me about how music became right, like how it
- 45:48Speaker 1: became more than I don't know, no, like how it
- 45:52Speaker 1: became like, holy sh it, you can do this for
- 45:54Speaker 1: a living, right? Uh? That was probably like No, I
- 45:57Speaker 1: guess around high school like I've been on stage, That's
- 45:59Speaker 1: how I was sick a pageant kid, Yeah, I know, uh,
- 46:04Speaker 1: just like my mom. She uh she toured around a
- 46:06Speaker 1: little bit, played like old all prey houses and ship
- 46:09Speaker 1: with like with a live band. Yeah yeah, she's singing
- 46:13Speaker 1: her ass off. Man, she sings better than me, seriously,
- 46:16Speaker 1: Oh yeah, she kills it um. And so like I
- 46:19Speaker 1: was a little she had a kid like running up
- 46:21Speaker 1: and down the owls people were performing and you know,
- 46:24Speaker 1: annoying the band and ship. So like I was always
- 46:28Speaker 1: around it. And then I got in high school learning
- 46:31Speaker 1: guitar and stuff. Started writing a little bit and I
- 46:33Speaker 1: would play, like, you know, a little bars around my hometown.
- 46:37Speaker 1: But it was always, you know, it was never a
- 46:38Speaker 1: thing that I thought I would really pursue. Uh. And
- 46:41Speaker 1: then I got into got into college what to Tarlton
- 46:44Speaker 1: State on the football scholarship got up there, and I
- 46:48Speaker 1: was like, damn it sucks. You know, like I could
- 46:51Speaker 1: be out playing and you know, partying and living it up.
- 46:55Speaker 1: And what position did you play? I was a linebacker? Linebacker,
- 46:58Speaker 1: And I was like, you know what, I'm not gonna
- 47:00Speaker 1: make it to the NFL, but you just knew that
- 47:02Speaker 1: I can get some free beer down the street, you know,
- 47:05Speaker 1: and a case of free beer and singing a couple
- 47:07Speaker 1: of songs and you might get a kiss on a
- 47:09Speaker 1: girl later on that night. So I was like, then
- 47:11Speaker 1: screw this, I'm out. So dropped out of school. Actually
- 47:14Speaker 1: I didn't drop out. I got I got kicked out
- 47:16Speaker 1: of school. And then they were like they're like, they
- 47:20Speaker 1: were like, you you go you go to this like
- 47:22Speaker 1: when you got kicked out, I got quit. Okay, this
- 47:28Speaker 1: brings up a co I had to go to a
- 47:30Speaker 1: junior college for a semester to get my grades back.
- 47:32Speaker 1: So I could come back, and so you started doing
- 47:34Speaker 1: bad and great, yeah, and then so they put me
- 47:37Speaker 1: on probation. Had you go to a junior college first semester.
- 47:41Speaker 1: I walked in the classroom and looked around, was like,
- 47:43Speaker 1: you know, I screwed this. I'm not even gonna do it.
- 47:45Speaker 1: So that was it for college. That was it for college.
- 47:48Speaker 1: And then we really hit it hard as far as
- 47:50Speaker 1: gigging and stuff, like a couple of years not frog gigging,
- 47:54Speaker 1: no show gigging, road dogs, hitting the road over Texas
- 48:01Speaker 1: and who's we Me and a couple of my buddies
- 48:05Speaker 1: from back home, and then uh, I think, now I
- 48:10Speaker 1: have I have two guys with me that have been
- 48:12Speaker 1: with me for damn there ten years, my guitar and
- 48:16Speaker 1: bass player. And then um Dre was actually playing drums
- 48:19Speaker 1: from my cousin at the time. And then they started
- 48:23Speaker 1: slowing down on gigs and stuff and I was doing
- 48:25Speaker 1: a drummer and I was like, dude, you just want
- 48:27Speaker 1: to come on the road with us, and he was like, hell, yeah,
- 48:30Speaker 1: let's do it. So we picked up I think I
- 48:33Speaker 1: pulled up to this. I was like, actually, our buddy
- 48:35Speaker 1: had an internship in Austin and they were paying him.
- 48:39Speaker 1: They were paying all of his rent for a one
- 48:42Speaker 1: bedroom apartment in Austin, and he was likensip it was
- 48:46Speaker 1: as construction company, and he was he was you get
- 48:51Speaker 1: an internship at a construction company that puts you up
- 48:54Speaker 1: in an apartment Texas is wild. It was part of
- 48:59Speaker 1: a deal. It was kind of part of the deal. Yeah,
- 49:04Speaker 1: but uh no. So he was like, no, one, why
- 49:06Speaker 1: don't you come and live down with us in Austin
- 49:08Speaker 1: for you know, six or seven months. So I load
- 49:11Speaker 1: it up, I go pick up dre and I pulled
- 49:13Speaker 1: it to his house and he's got his drum set
- 49:16Speaker 1: and like a trash bag full of clothes. And I'm like,
- 49:19Speaker 1: is this everything you have? And he's like yeah, he's
- 49:21Speaker 1: got like tw years old down as he never left.
- 49:23Speaker 1: How pleasant. I was crying and we you know, we
- 49:26Speaker 1: get on the road. You're crying about leaving home. Yeah,
- 49:30Speaker 1: I've never left a whole lot. Born born in that house,
- 49:34Speaker 1: not in the house, but hospital, but came home in
- 49:36Speaker 1: that house. And I thought he was so full of
- 49:38Speaker 1: ship and he's like, dude, we really want to do this.
- 49:40Speaker 1: And we were like we're in the middle of recording
- 49:42Speaker 1: no one's complaining, I think, which is the album that
- 49:44Speaker 1: you know, kind of set everything off for for Co
- 49:47Speaker 1: and the guys. And uh, he was like, let's we're
- 49:49Speaker 1: moving Austin free rent one bedroom and it sounded like
- 49:52Speaker 1: you mean you're gonna move because you're playing on moving
- 49:54Speaker 1: into the construction dudes. Yeah, one of our best friends.
- 49:57Speaker 1: But with our thoughts were Austin is like a bigger city.
- 50:00Speaker 1: We live in a tiny town. We can get more
- 50:03Speaker 1: meet people, music every every d Yeah, there's a couple
- 50:06Speaker 1: of booking agencies and managers and we needed some kind
- 50:08Speaker 1: of direction because we're really gonna do this. Well. Then
- 50:11Speaker 1: he shows up my house and I'm like, oh, ship,
- 50:12Speaker 1: I don't have a suitcase, Like I don't own a suitcase.
- 50:15Speaker 1: I've never really left. And he picks me up and
- 50:17Speaker 1: we're getting in the truck. Like you said, I'm like
- 50:19Speaker 1: tearing up, like texting my mom like I think we're
- 50:22Speaker 1: really leaving, and she's like, oh, yeah, we went to
- 50:28Speaker 1: Yeah crying in Spanish, how that sound? Yeah, Like I
- 50:32Speaker 1: think we had enough money for it. It's like getting
- 50:35Speaker 1: down to Austin and like we're about to get on
- 50:38Speaker 1: the interstate and he's being real quid. I was like, dude,
- 50:40Speaker 1: what's wrong with you? He's like, that's gonna be a
- 50:45Speaker 1: lot had a problemise, And you guys weren't like packing down.
- 50:48Speaker 1: You didn't pack down like you're all you're like, you
- 50:51Speaker 1: weren't moving moving no, I mean just going for a while.
- 50:54Speaker 1: But like, we didn't have a lot of we didn't
- 50:56Speaker 1: have I think we had like a bad I had
- 50:58Speaker 1: a couple of suitcase is and a couple of guitars,
- 51:01Speaker 1: and he had his set and a couple of duck decoys.
- 51:04Speaker 1: Has a couple of duck decoys. All our guns and
- 51:07Speaker 1: uh like I said, and like I said, this is
- 51:09Speaker 1: a one bedroom, one bathroom apartment. And we're you know,
- 51:14Speaker 1: we're not We're not small, man, We're pretty big dudes,
- 51:17Speaker 1: and our buddies just as big as we are. And
- 51:20Speaker 1: uh so he would be gone at work all day
- 51:21Speaker 1: or and we would just sit there and kind of,
- 51:25Speaker 1: you know whatever, waiting for a little bit of this
- 51:28Speaker 1: noise noise complaint money that he hit and finally it did.
- 51:32Speaker 1: I think our first check was like four hundred bugs
- 51:35Speaker 1: and we went to Top Golf to night and spent
- 51:37Speaker 1: three So we're back to Square one were we know,
- 51:41Speaker 1: we thought we were on the top of the world,
- 51:43Speaker 1: all right, next three months wrote some damn good songs
- 51:46Speaker 1: in that apartment though, So, like, did your so what
- 51:51Speaker 1: did your so? Your mom was in the music business,
- 51:53Speaker 1: dad was in construction. Were they pissed when he failed
- 51:56Speaker 1: out of college? Oh? Yeah, you're man, Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Did they tell you can't be a musician? Uh No,
- 52:03Speaker 1: that was never that was never a thing. Like they
- 52:06Speaker 1: always been really supportive of you know, like once I
- 52:10Speaker 1: actually wanted to pursue it and I was like, you know,
- 52:13Speaker 1: this is something I'm gonna do, they were really supportive
- 52:16Speaker 1: of it. So, um, I never really had that problem
- 52:18Speaker 1: with him. They've it's kind of whatever I've always wanted
- 52:21Speaker 1: to do there, They've been really supportive. So that's good. Yeah,
- 52:25Speaker 1: that's a hot tip for parents, man. But no, they're great.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Um yeah, I don't know. But like like I like
- 52:35Speaker 1: I always say, like, had I not done that, I'd
- 52:37Speaker 1: be back in East Texas working road construction, a couple
- 52:41Speaker 1: of kids, you know, my mom and she wants a
- 52:45Speaker 1: grand baby so bad. My sister is getting married in December.
- 52:48Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, as soon as this fine lives let's
- 52:51Speaker 1: get to work. We need some grand babies because I'm
- 52:53Speaker 1: tired of this pressure on me, Like I'm the oldest
- 52:55Speaker 1: someone mom wants a grand baby really bad. I'm like, huh,
- 52:59Speaker 1: probably got a couple of them run around out there.
- 53:00Speaker 1: But I don't know about when you were. When you
- 53:04Speaker 1: were when you learn how to play guitar? Uh, Like
- 53:07Speaker 1: when I was a kid, guys in my area, all
- 53:09Speaker 1: the guys in my area to learn how to play
- 53:11Speaker 1: a guitar. We're learning because in order to play like
- 53:13Speaker 1: two songs and they all learned the same Gordon Lightfoot
- 53:17Speaker 1: and like a John Prime song. No, you learned how
- 53:19Speaker 1: to play fred Bear my uncle ted Um, that'd be
- 53:23Speaker 1: like a big one you'd want to learn for trying
- 53:26Speaker 1: what else? Like, it's just everybody would know how to play.
- 53:29Speaker 1: That was kind of like that inspired so many people
- 53:31Speaker 1: to get into guitar. Damn what's that song? Yeah? Like
- 53:35Speaker 1: when what? At what your age? What were you guys
- 53:37Speaker 1: trying to learn how to play? Actually posted a picture
- 53:40Speaker 1: that so long ago, my set list from high schools
- 53:43Speaker 1: that I would go to bars and play. You know,
- 53:45Speaker 1: I'd play three or four hours set, so I would
- 53:48Speaker 1: play a lot of covers and then try to sneak
- 53:50Speaker 1: can songs I wrote or my cousins that wrote, And
- 53:54Speaker 1: that's a lot of songs. Dude. Four Oh yeah, yeah,
- 53:56Speaker 1: you played for an hour, you get like a ten
- 53:57Speaker 1: minute break. He played for an hour, you know as
- 54:00Speaker 1: hell make I'm worried about playing for forty five minutes.
- 54:06Speaker 1: But like, like looking back on it now, like I
- 54:08Speaker 1: can't remember half the half of those songs because you know,
- 54:10Speaker 1: we've been playing all hard music for so long now,
- 54:12Speaker 1: and they all they don't play covers anymore. So, um,
- 54:16Speaker 1: we'll give me, for instance, like an early song that
- 54:19Speaker 1: you'd love to play O Man Friends and low Places.
- 54:24Speaker 1: You know you were born in nine Yeah, for sure.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I was like an old man when that song came out.
- 54:32Speaker 1: I was washing dishes at Steiner's point. Yeah, just like
- 54:37Speaker 1: the crowd favorites, you know, like I don't know Garth
- 54:40Speaker 1: Brooks anything or anything not George just like boy George,
- 54:47Speaker 1: George George straight Yeah, culture club think covers, but we've
- 54:56Speaker 1: covered funny you say that though, back to the original
- 54:58Speaker 1: thing about learning guys how to play around the uh,
- 55:01Speaker 1: like two songs. I don't think most people pick up
- 55:04Speaker 1: a guitargo and this thing right here is going to
- 55:06Speaker 1: change the rest of my life. And I'm gonna, I'm gonna,
- 55:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna write my own songs, play them, record on
- 55:11Speaker 1: people by them, and I'll make a living. Like I
- 55:12Speaker 1: don't think most people. I've thought about that before. Like
- 55:15Speaker 1: I think most of us, the most guys, including myself,
- 55:19Speaker 1: was to pick up chicks or play at bonfires around
- 55:21Speaker 1: like Partester learn he was trying to pick up his
- 55:23Speaker 1: own white I mean, seriously funny, funny. I mentioned Whiskey Myers.
- 55:28Speaker 1: The first song I ever learned was a Whiskey Meyer song,
- 55:31Speaker 1: Broke the Windows. It was two chords and see and eat,
- 55:34Speaker 1: and I learned how to play it. And to this day,
- 55:37Speaker 1: if Drake gets gets hard as that's the only song
- 55:40Speaker 1: pay fourteen miles kind of a minor and there's kind
- 55:43Speaker 1: of hard for me other than that. But seriously, I
- 55:45Speaker 1: think that's what most people start doing it for. And
- 55:47Speaker 1: like like for your in your instance, like now you
- 55:50Speaker 1: get to go open a gig. It what's a pretty badass. Yeah,
- 55:54Speaker 1: that's I mean, that's good for you. That's cool. Yeah,
- 55:56Speaker 1: And I know I've said this before, but like I
- 55:58Speaker 1: picked up that guitar being like, my number one goal
- 56:01Speaker 1: is I just want to try and get through this
- 56:03Speaker 1: song at my wedding. What song was? It was Tyler
- 56:08Speaker 1: Childer's song Lady May. And then people I didn't like clarify,
- 56:15Speaker 1: Oh this is a good story. My aunt uncle were
- 56:18Speaker 1: crying and people were crying and they're like that, I
- 56:21Speaker 1: cannot believe you wrote that. I should have kept going.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Jester had a solid writer version of Stolen valid. I
- 56:32Speaker 1: was like, I didn't write that, thank you. Yeah, that fact.
- 56:38Speaker 1: I can't believe the song Chester. I mean, there's a video.
- 56:42Speaker 1: We have a video of it, which is pretty funny
- 56:44Speaker 1: because there's like pan of the crowd a few times
- 56:47Speaker 1: and people are like wiping their Did they go viral
- 56:50Speaker 1: on TikTok? No, there's another guy that did the same
- 56:53Speaker 1: thing but to a different song. Then I've seen it.
- 56:55Speaker 1: He was like, I just learned how to play this
- 56:56Speaker 1: this song. Like last week, I just made a fun
- 56:58Speaker 1: on the wall the people leaving the wood, Like damn.
- 57:00Speaker 1: He was such a great songs going through Who's Who's
- 57:06Speaker 1: Lady Man? We'll go with it. Were you guys, did
- 57:13Speaker 1: you guys start bow hunting his kids or only later? Yeah?
- 57:16Speaker 1: I started boing when I was eight years old, because
- 57:20Speaker 1: like what brought you into that? Yeah? Yeah, my granddad
- 57:24Speaker 1: and they, you know, they came to bow hunting and
- 57:27Speaker 1: it was an extra month of the hunting. So I
- 57:31Speaker 1: got into it. I didn't kill my first year with
- 57:33Speaker 1: the boat, so I was like probably tiena e Levin. Uh,
- 57:38Speaker 1: but yeah, it was. It's I've just always been addicted
- 57:41Speaker 1: to it, like everything about it, you know. And then
- 57:44Speaker 1: once I got into high school, Uh, I kind of
- 57:46Speaker 1: just went full archery. Like I'm not hardly ever rifle
- 57:50Speaker 1: hunt unless you know, it's you know, somebody wants me
- 57:54Speaker 1: to or you know, however it is. But yeah, I
- 57:57Speaker 1: mean I mostly just both hunt. Now, well, you I
- 58:01Speaker 1: just got my first bow like six months ago. I
- 58:04Speaker 1: haven't trying to get him into it like five years,
- 58:06Speaker 1: and he just said, thought about it. My jps like
- 58:10Speaker 1: been bow hunt for a couple of years. Yeah, Well
- 58:13Speaker 1: I started with the recurve. So it's a little bit
- 58:15Speaker 1: did ye all natural? Ever since I was a kid,
- 58:19Speaker 1: I've I've always shot rabbits and stuff. I never never
- 58:21Speaker 1: went for deer because it was just my dad didn't
- 58:23Speaker 1: hunt a whole lot, so I didn't know how to
- 58:25Speaker 1: do it at all. Um, but yeah, I have a
- 58:28Speaker 1: recurve bow and I love it. And then I was like,
- 58:30Speaker 1: you know what, this is a little too hard right now,
- 58:33Speaker 1: So I went, you know, backtrack. I guess I don't know.
- 58:35Speaker 1: I got a Matthews and started shooting it last year
- 58:39Speaker 1: and killed the dough and I was like, this is
- 58:41Speaker 1: really addicting, so fun. Jesse used to make recurve bos. Really,
- 58:47Speaker 1: that's sick. Slice my finger. When I was looking at
- 58:51Speaker 1: I was like, with shot a dough with the recurve
- 58:55Speaker 1: or a long bow? I built nice? Slice my finger?
- 58:58Speaker 1: You know? Like? What song I keep thinking about Chester
- 59:00Speaker 1: when I think about you and your guitar? Is that song? Um?
- 59:03Speaker 1: That one guitar just blew him away? I don't know
- 59:10Speaker 1: he yeah, he beat up six the second hand. I
- 59:15Speaker 1: didn't know how to play it. I'm gonna rewrite that
- 59:18Speaker 1: for about Chester. Are you gonna hire Steve to be
- 59:21Speaker 1: a backup singer? Sure? So we should be writing about Chester, man,
- 59:26Speaker 1: it'd be so funny. Imagine imagine that that article Steve
- 59:29Speaker 1: goes on the tool Dude, I just you know what
- 59:34Speaker 1: it is. It's um jukebox hero, It's it's called wedding hero,
- 59:40Speaker 1: and we rewrite the whole thing. It's it's juke by,
- 59:42Speaker 1: it's chest It's wedding hero, set the jukebox hero, and
- 59:45Speaker 1: it's all about chester O God that one good time.
- 59:50Speaker 1: He's away, but she's got stars in her eyes. Now
- 59:57Speaker 1: he's got She's a wedding hero. He's a wedding hero.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: She's got Stop. And there's that a little bit like tonight,
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: what's gonna happen tonight? I mean, I don't know what
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: happened on your weddy night. I don't want to venture
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: to guess interject when interesting hunting stuff comes up. But
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: so you're running around playing, You're like living in this
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: this apartment, writing songs, doing covers, making fifty bucks? Is
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: it like in the I recently watched The Weird al Um.
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: The Weird al You're like Weird Al Yankovic did a
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: spoof on music biographies, you know, all the tropes and
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: music biographies. And one of the things I was reading
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: an interview with them about making the movie, and you
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: talked about when you're watching music biographies, like all the
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: major ship happens in one night, like they get an
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: amazing gig. The record company guy comes backstage. You know
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: what I mean, it's like in one night, it's like
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: every Yeah. So, uh how long did that play out?
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: I mean it could't have played out over excruciating long
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: period of time. Did you not that old? I mean,
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: so we started hitting the road pretty hard, like in
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: thirteen twelve, thirteen fourteen, and then um, like I said, man,
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: I mean we did that forever. Dre was actually he
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: was playing drums force and booking our shows and uh,
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: what was your? So we come up with the name
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: for a book because we didn't have a book in Asia,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: and Dre made up a fake name to email bars
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: and stuff and was like, hey, I'm with Cowutzel. What
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: days all I have? You know? What was you? Andy Weskers?
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: Because we were drinking soon was whiskey at the time
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: when we get drunk, like you got any more that
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Waskers and so like that became his nickname. And uh
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: so you were an email as an individual? Yeah, you
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: just I mean think about it. These bars were getting
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: a thousand kids that guitar or you know, I want
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: to come play the bar, and they all promised that
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: their hometown they're they're from there. My all, my family
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: will come out and all the bars interested in making money.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: I mean, they want to help the artist. But my
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: thoughts are they've never heard of probably Cowtson. If they have,
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: they don't know anything about them. So on our website
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: put booking agent contacts. Andy Askers made an email. Still
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: use the email to today. I'll see you an email
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: sometimes so you can see Andy Asker's still a signature.
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: And here was w A s k e er. What's
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: w know? Yeah, yeah, w h A as like whiskey,
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: but Askers Yeah, and I would just I had like
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: this little copy and pasting that said, hey, I represent
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Cowtzon many uh, you want to come play a show.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: And sometimes you have to like I have to like
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: like find like a happy medium because they're like, I
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: don't know who you are, but I'm never where's your website,
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: where's your address? This isn't legit, but they but once
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: we showed up and you know the crowd, that's kind
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: of when we started getting some momentum, they were like damn.
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: And I'm pretty sure Andy Astro went through the industry
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: of actual legit people like who is this guy? And
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: then I meet these people in there that's you, like
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: and we pulled up the college Stay show all the time,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: and it was like we hadn't put out no it's complained,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: but we were still pulling pretty good crowds. And up,
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: what's a good crowd in those days? I mean two
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: hundred people? Which which are you talking about a bunch
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: of drunk college kids? So like it felt like two uh.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: Guy goes up, he goes hey, so where's where's Andy at?
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, he's like Andy West because like shit,
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: like right here? And he was like, aren't you the drummer?
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: And he was like, you know what's going on? And
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: so we tell them this toy and we still laugh
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: about it to day whenever we get to see him.
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: But Chris box from But yeah, it's back to what
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: you were asking. Like, so at the time, we're living
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: in this apartment, I'm booking these shows. But like when
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: I when I say like, and I've said this before,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: like if we didn't book shows or I didn't book shows,
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: we didn't have any money to do anything, and that
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: includes eating food and we like to eat food. Yeah,
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: so I would book a show and like in that
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: show contract, I would put most importantly a bottle of
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: Jack Daniels. Food was this pizza and it was like
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: six of us traveling. At the time, we didn't have
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: we didn't have a lot. Guy. Now it's thirty of
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: us traveling together. But the time he was six of us,
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: one van or my mom's car, his truck, you know whatever.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: Um so I would put like a pizza or like
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: you have to supply dinner and I don't. We didn't
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: care if it was McDonald's or pizza hud. It was
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: part of it. So we started gaining a traction that way.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: And the kind of snowball from there. What's that, Kylie?
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: We've dealt it? Like, what's that when you do live shows?
- 1:04:36Speaker 1: There's the Yeah, I just had to do that. What's
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: in your writer? Then? Uh, it's not much. Let me
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: let me make one to send it to you. You
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: can send you have hotel for you and six boxes
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: of pizza. Well, I just didn't know what to put down.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: I was like, maybe a couple of light beers. Yeah,
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: ours was, oh yeah, I could walk ours, and then
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: they go overboard and you feel it. Bags is all
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: that they're probably too much ship. Oh maybe I want
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: a little half and half of my coffee. Then you
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: go there and there's a gallon of that, and you
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: know it's just gonna wind up in the trash. I
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: just thought about this but that all the time. We
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: played in Houston Fire Else to Learn, and we go
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: to get paid and the guy was like, what are
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: you talking about? Like, where's our where's our showing money?
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: He's like, you owe me two hundred dollars and I
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: was like wait what There's like four people in the
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: bar and he's like, yeah, I need two hundred dollars.
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: I was like, well, we don't have any where do
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: we have money to get back home? Like what are
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: you talking about? He's like, well, your guys drink way
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: more than that. So like eventually he turned it down.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: He's like, made us only pay like a hundred bucks.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: But yeah, we had to give them a hundred bucks
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: to play at their at their venue. So yeah, it
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: was just ship like that did uh? How like how
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: does it go that you? Because if it's your first album,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: it's not like someone commissions you had you know, it's
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: not like someone like does an advance on a new
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: album because you haven't proven yourself yet, you know, so
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: how does that work? Like you make it? You promote it,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: it gets out there, and then all of a sudden,
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: someone wants to not publish it, but someone wants to
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: distribute it. Yeah, so I guess kind of for us,
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: it was just it kind of spread like wild wildfire
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: for in Texas, and then once it got in Texas
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: and kind of blew up there. I went to Oklahoma
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: and Arkansas is you know, you know places you feel
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: it spread like geographic like, yeah, it was just all Twitter,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: straight fan base. Yeah, like people started sharing it, you know,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: and uh, we didn't have anybody doing any of that
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: for us. So once we started getting that momentum and
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: playing all these shows, uh that's when book and ages started,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: you know, hearing about us and other people like that,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: and and we didn't want management or anything like that.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: We just wanted somebody to book shouters for us, just
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: so we could play in front of people, you know,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: wanted We wanted to be playing the two shows a year.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: You know, that was a deal. And hell, we did
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: it for three or four years, and I just slowly
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: started coming down because we didn't need to anymore. But uh, yeah, man,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: it was it was crazy there for a while, and
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: it kind of happened really quick, but we followed it
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: up a noise complaint with uh. It was like two
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: or three years later, and I've been very blessed. Man
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: were just just, uh, the fans like they've done everything
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: for us pretty much. So yesterday we were hanging out.
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: I was asking you about the role of Austin and
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: being a Texas musician, and I thought it would be
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: that it was you know, I think I oughtn't remember
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: what I said to you, but I said something like,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: I assume you had you know that you had to
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: spend all this time in Austin, and that's kind of
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: your main proving ground and where you know, you when
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: you're working on new material, you know, and Austin doesn't
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: like in for you as a Texas musician. Austin doesn't
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: hold that well. Austin's has so many different genres coming
- 1:08:02Speaker 1: through of music, so it's not like like we play.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: When we started, it was like there's Texas country music,
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: there's red dirt music up in Oklahoma, you know, and
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: those two kind of merged to become like a genre
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: of music. And so, uh, I don't know, like I said,
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Austin just has so many different styles of music, And uh,
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: I don't know, there's a place that we do really
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: good in Austin, but it's not like for like Fort
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Worth was like approving ground for us for Stephenville. All
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: the college towns, you know, East Texas would big that
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: there's a lot of not a lot of places of
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: play in East Texas and not a lot of artists
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: that come out of each Texas. But h yeah, mostly
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: we were just hitting college towns and we were pretty
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: much just a college bar that you know, I was
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: writing music and we had a more edgy sound than
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: what Texas country was kind of brought up on. So
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: I feel like that connected with the college kids a
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: lot more. And uh, I don't know, but same. That's
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: kind of the reason we moved to Austin. Just like
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: you thought Austin was that hub that's we thought so too.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: We're like, we live in a town where there's one
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: bar and it's all the old people smoked cigarettes in
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: there and play you know, and and just listen to
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: Yeah it's funny. Yeah, exactly right, because we thought the
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: same thing. We're like, if we moved to Austin, it's
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: like our quote unquote like our Nashville for songwriters. We
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: can go up here and and it's gonna be our ticket.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: Somebody will lists or find us. And it's actually as
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: we started getting gaining that momentum that I mean, I
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: was collecting money at the end of the night and uh,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know what to do with
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: this cash, Like they're gonna ask for w N. I
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: don't even know what that is, do you know what?
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: I had no idea. But I also I didn't want
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: to get taxed at the end of the year. And
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: the kid, yeah, back with you. But that's kind of
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: how things snowballed for us. But I mean, coach nailed
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: it on the head. It's it was the college town
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: at the time we were. I mean it's been seven
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: eight years ago. We were more in college age. So
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: like those college kids, I think that we came in
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: at the perfect time where those college it's like, really
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: needed somebody to be like, those are the guys I
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: want to go watch. I mean, we drank a lot.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: We partied with him, and yeah, it's like, I don't
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: mus a kid. You know, it's about party and having
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: a good time, you know, the ship that college kids do.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: So they we were they related with us a lot,
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: you know, and I was, you know, around that that time,
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: we were the same age, and I was doing so
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: well in college and uh yeah, So I think we're
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: just really relatable to all the college crowd and stuff,
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: and it's kind of what helped us, you know. And
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: still to this day, you know, we'll go to college
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: towns and I like, I keep telling everybody I've been
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: I've been in college for ten years now, you know.
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: So I remember you said that yesterday. I didn't know
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: what you mean. I'm still going strong, mom dad. And
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: then I told him, I was like, when you're not
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: a doctor, He said, uh, you know, I keep wanting
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: to ask you too. And this isn't in any kind
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: of order. Does your family trace their lineage to um
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: Lou Wetzel The Death Wind? You ever hear Lou Wetzel? No? No,
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: you hear the Bear Grease podcast, You'd be very wise
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: to go. It's on our podcast Network News Podcasts are
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Clay New come out of Arkansas and go look up
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: his episode about Lou What the Death Wind? The Death
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: Wind Long Hunter Sociopathic Murder Ancestry dot Com. After this
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: and Lou Wetzel he for he was you know, he
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: was from the borderland, so the you know Ohio River
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: between West Virginia and the Ohio territories and stuff, and
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: then wound up down in Louisiana to wind up down
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: in jail down there. Um, hey, we might be yeah,
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: you might trace him back to the same jail. Uh
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: you shouldn't. You should read up on Lou Wessell. Here's
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: my other question. But but listen to listen to Clay's
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: episode about Lee Wetsel, and I'll point out, Uh, I
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: had to lean on him very heavily because here's the thing.
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: Do you do you know LeWitt, No, No, he was
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: alive in the Hunters. He he was. Lou Wetzel existed
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: in that he existed in that time, um, around the
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: American Revolution, in the in the Indian Wars. So we
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: one day had a historian on and the historian specializes
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: in the long hunters like Daniel Boone and other guys
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: that hunted commercial hunters, the hunted the the the Kentucky
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Tennessee area. Um. He mentioned how back then there were
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: some real bad such as like some bad people such
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: as Lou Wetzel and Sam Brady. And I said, I
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: never heard of Lou Wetzel. Then my body Tommy Edson,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: the blue collar scholar, chastises me over text meith stage
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: of how could I not know about the Death Wind?
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: So I did some research. Then I strongly suggested to
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: Clay that he do an episode about the Death Wind,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: The Death Wind Episode sixty. I'm gonna hit you up
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: like you're not gonna be leave this ship. Actually, here's
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: my next question for you. Make a note to yourself.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: There's actually a whole the Wetsel Boys, whole bunch of them.
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: Uh sound like, so if you came up so in
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: your business, you come up very grassroots, like, very elbow
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: grease right like like outsiders. Um, what were like? What
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: does does Nashville like not need to exist for you?
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: I mean, is Nashville a thing or is it not
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: even a force for you to reckon with? I mean
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: at this point, no, not really just just because like
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: and nothing against Nashville. It's just we're we've kind of
- 1:14:06Speaker 1: made it a point to just kind of do whatever
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: we want to do and be authentic and in ourselves
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: and and you can do that in Nashville. But um,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: going back, I want to said earlier, like everything that
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: we have is because the fans and the way that
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: they have you know, blown us up, you know. So, um,
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: we don't need Nashville and they don't need us, you
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: know necessarily. So um, you know it's just uh, I
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: don't know, man, it's we kind of do whatever we
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: want to and that's kind of how we've always wanted
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: wanted it to be. And uh and not saying that
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: Nashville won't want to allow you to do that, but um,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: I'm starting a new country project. Uh in January we'll
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: start working on and uh, I'll probably hitting up Nashville like, hey,
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: please let me know. Um what what door do I
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: knock on? Yeah? No, I love Nashvi. So man, we
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: go there. We go there probably five six times a year,
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: and I got a lot of friends up there. But
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: and you'll pull you'll pull a good audience there. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: we pull you know, we pull really good audiences in Nashville.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: But um, yeah, I don't know. It's it's just a
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: it's a different world, man, you know, Like it's a
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: songwriter world, you know, And um, I don't know, it's
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: hard for me to write with other people like so
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: I have to It is yeah, like, uh, I don't
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: know if I can't if I'm not feeling what another
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: person is, you know, like or if they're not feeling
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: the same way I am. And it's just it's kind
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: of pointless. Like do you ever bring your stuff too?
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: If you get stuck on something, do you have people
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: you bring it to? You just work it out? Yeah? Like, well,
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: like I'll write like a half a song and then
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: you know, say that and then come back to another
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: song and either combine them or you know, to where
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: it makes sense. Or I'll hit up a buddy and
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: be like, you know, see if you can help me
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: out with this. But uh, yeah, sitting down and co
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: writing now, I've I've I've done it twice, I think,
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: And uh it's not that I don't like it, it's
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: just it's just really hard for me to do so.
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: Um but yeah, what what what would be the closest
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: thing to a normal way that you'd work from from
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: a writing perspective? Um, Usually I start off with melodies, honestly, Like,
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: I'll have a melody in my head and then I mean,
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: I never saw in my life, but I don't picture
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: it that way. Yeah, Kurt Cobain and he was like,
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: melody first, layer, second and so, um, how I do it?
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: I do it like uh Chester, then I go jukebox hero,
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: then lady may no, I'll go melody man and then uh,
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: usually I don't know. Is this annoying for me to ask?
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: How like the melodies in your head? No? Like how
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: does it occur? Like not how does it decurdy? But
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: how is it? What is it sound in your head?
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: Are you here to performed? Are you just hearing it?
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: Like your hommy? It? Like? What the hell is it?
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: It's either I mean, it's just like I'll whistle a lot,
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: like I'll just be like, I'll yeah, I'll be whistling
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: a Lot's somebody like what is that? I was like,
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: I don't know. If they're like, it's not bad, and
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: then I'll just go to a guitar and try to
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: play it and seriously yeah, honestly yeah, and uh and
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: then after or I mean, I mean, sometimes I'll just
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: I have a thought in my head or I have
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: a line, I'll write it down, I'll come back to it,
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: and then sometimes I'll write this song before I put
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: the mild to it. Man, it's just kind of what
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: but you know what it is, and he's got to
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: figure out where it's gonna for sure. Also, whenever I'm
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: whenever I sit down and try to write, hardly anything
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: ever comes out, you know, but like I'll just be
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: drinking a cocktail or something and I'm like, man, that's
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: really good, try and put that down. Or I'm just
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: making a note on my phone and then come back
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: to it and you know, have it, have it wrote down? Yeah,
- 1:17:50Speaker 1: but some of my best in your phone look like, oh,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: you don't want to know. It'd be like a couple
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: of words. Yeah, it'll be like just a line or
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: out all of a song or you know, I don't know.
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: Like it's cold as ship outside is snow and I'm
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: here with Steve Ronillo. You know I can. I've seen
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: time blowing sounds. We'll be talking. This could be four
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: in the morning, drunk or or on a road trip
- 1:18:16Speaker 1: or something. Or it could be two pm sober, watching
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: TV and somebody will say something and co would just
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: walk off without and you see him like something bad happened,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: Like what are you doing? Like who is that? Now?
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: I to write something in my phone and I know
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: that's what he's doing. It's already even asked, Yeah, and
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: I go to the back of the room of the
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: guitar and shut the door. You don't y'all see me
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: for like an hour. I'll come back and like we'll
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: here times. Yeah, but uh yeah, man, that's fun. I like,
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I like putting together stuff like that, and being in
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: the studio helps outtle up. And we recorded our last
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: record and hell Pass and and that's you know, it's funny.
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: My next question is why why is it hell Pass? So?
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: The studio it's called Sonic Ranch. It's into r Neo.
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: It's about forty five minutes outside of El pez So.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: But it's on a thirteen thirteen thousand acres. It's up
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: a complant like a pocon farm. You hunt it while
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: you're there, No, I want to do. There's so many
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: dove and damn squirrels. I'm getting in pretty good with
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: the owner, so I mean maybe maybe next year. But no,
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: it's like it's a mile from the border. Like the
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: wall like runs right next to the studio. So once
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: you're out there, I think there's a family dollar and
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: a liquor store and a family dollar there. So once
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: you get out there, yea liquor but it's like it's
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: it's honestly like a resort studio, but it's in the
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Millino where there's no distractions. Like you wake up, they
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: feed you breakfast, lunch, dinner, get out there. Man. It's
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: just like and it's for this purpose. It's yeah, it's
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: a it's for songwriting. I mean there's there's eight studios there.
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: Every they've got lodging everything. Manu. It's so once you
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: get out there, you're out there. I mean, wake up,
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: e breakfast, record, eight, dinner, go to bed. It's like
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: the only Budgie thing about it is all the gear.
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, it's not yeah, and it's nothing. It's
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: not like super fancy or anything like. It's it's beautiful place.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: It's it's awesome. But but you guys get a mighty
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: thirst at night, you'd like to go out to bars?
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: What do you do with Yeah, well that's what I'm saying,
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Like we'll just sit there and uh, we'll drink a
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: couple bottles of wine and and don't get me wrong,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: on the weekends, will pump into hell pass. I found
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: myself like probably two yards from where the war is.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: That's the next time I went with one of the
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: engineers from the place, and I was he was like, man,
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: I got these girls in town. Let's go. And I
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: was like, all right, let's screw let's go. So we
- 1:20:44Speaker 1: get there and I'm like, where the funk are we at? Bro,
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: And he was like, war is right there. I'm like
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: like right there. He's like yeah. I was like, let's
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: get the funk out of here. What are we doing? Man? Like,
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: no way, I'm being the morning news man. Give me
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: out of here. But uh no, it's it's it's right man.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: And we're going back in January. We'll be there for
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: probably there for two months, uh, to do another album. Yeah,
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: I'm I'm I'm starting that country project. But I wanna
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: I just want to get out there and, right man,
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: get away from everything and you know, dry up and
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: just kind of get get reset. And uh we've been
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: on We've been on tour for damn near all year.
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: So the guys will get two or three months off
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: and I'll get some time just to be alone, get
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: out there and write and record again. So dry up,
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: like dry up on like just clean clean, yeah, just uh,
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: you know he's up a little bit. What's the country project?
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: Um Man, it's just I've I've always wanted to, like
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: I've people consider me a country artist, but our music's
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: more rock. I feel like, yeah, yeah, we thrown in
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: that genre, but I mean it's where it's rock music,
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: mad alternative. Me and me and Seth roam at earlier,
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: me and him listening to hell Pass so continuous loop
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: for six hours, driving driving from driving, from Ketchum from
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: catching the Bowsman nice and we got the balls and
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: I'm like, it's not a country record. Yeah, And then that,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: then that then I got to look at how it's
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: like I'm not the first guy who observe this. Oh
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: people get so pissed or like this is a country
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: music what's wrong with him? I'm like, oh, this new album,
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: but uh no, so like yeah, I'm I'm gonna put
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: out my first actual record country record, you know, like,
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: um oh, but what's go do you mean? What do
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: you mean? Tell me what you mean here? Like some
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: like some some fiddle, some skin guitar, you know, going
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: you're in a stick with your but you're tell me
- 1:22:48Speaker 1: you're gonna stick with your normal subject and that that
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: that's a deal. That's like the plan, Like that's why
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: I'm spending so much time out there because my goal
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: is to write two records. I want to write a
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: country record, and then that's the I might get out
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: there and can't route a country record and then go
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: back on the music that we had been creating for
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: the last you know, ten years. But lyrically, here's what,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: here's what I need to tell me. Lyrically, it'll stay constant.
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it'll just it's gonna be raw and really
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: like what's gonna be like, yeah, you're not saying something yeah, no, no, no,
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: I'm not gonna no, no, shot I'm I like talking
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: about like feelings and uh like real world ship, you know,
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: like it's and not people not distant people that talk
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: about you know, going down the back road drinking a
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: cod beer and with my grandpa shot gun rack and
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: all this. Like, No, it's not gonna be that kind
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: of country. It's gonna be like like an old like
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: old school you know, just chicken shit. I mean real chicken,
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: real honestly real chicken ship stuff. But no, just just
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: honest true ship, you know. Uh not I'm not sure
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: every day you man, let's put on cambo and drinks
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: coal whiskey, you know what I mean, but you don't
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: mind doing that. I don't fucking saying I don't get
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: me wrong, I will do it. I'm gonna send you,
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna send you the record, and you're gonna be
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: like you line, son of a bit. I'm you think
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: it's gonna be tough for you go that route? Uh,
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: I don't think so. Honestly, man, I've I've, like I said,
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: I grew up around it. I've always been around it.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: I still love country music. Um So, I don't think so.
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: I think more or less just just because we have
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: been making this sound for so long of kind of
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: kind of country rock. I think that'll be kind of
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: the harder part of getting back into like the melodic,
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: like the melody part of it. Um, but that's it.
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: Like like I said, I might get out there and
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: may and it might not happen. But um and if
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: that does, I apologize for I've been waiting on a
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: cuntry record. You know my favorite parts ball Hell passed.
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: So was the interludes where you dressed the audience. Yeah,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: that's good ship. Did anybody try to talk you out
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: of that? No, that's that's uh. We were we were
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: in there and we were whenever we're in the studio,
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: we we drink pretty heavily and uh and you got
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: you were a little flamy that day. Oh dude, you
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: have no dude, but uh yeah, especially during vocal day,
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: I'm drinking a lot of whiskey. Um. But we were
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: so Kimball likes to keep the microphone on just in case,
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: you know, just to catch you know, stuff that like damn,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: I wish would have caught that. So, uh, that was
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: kind of one of the deals. We were just talking
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: and I was like, it's a microphone on it. He
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: was like yeah, and I've had that going on in
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: my head for a while, Like now that I've got
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: cells attention, I forgot what it was I was gonna say.
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: And I've honestly forgot what I was going to say
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: at that point. So he was like, I really like that.
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: Let's put that on the beginning of that the record. Yeah,
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: it's nice. Get you're getting like addressed by the musician,
