- 0:16Speaker 1: sports welcome to the return to glory podcast.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Welcome back return to glory podcast hunters arbor nicki and
- 0:33Speaker 2: austin rose It's Monday morning, Huskers take care of business
- 0:39Speaker 2: against the Bowling Green Falcons, 56-7. And we had a
- 0:46Speaker 2: little light show entertainment to close off our Saturday.
- 0:53Speaker 3: How was the first game back in Memorial for you?
- 0:58Speaker 4: No, you were there last week though, weren't you?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, yep.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Okay, I thought you was last week for some reason.
- 1:05Speaker 4: But I guess it's the first night game.
- 1:08Speaker 2: First night game. We get another one this week. I thought, yeah.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I mean, actually, I was surprised at how, I'll call it, filled,
- 1:18Speaker 2: I guess, the stadium was throughout the whole game this week. Obviously,
- 1:22Speaker 2: the weather had a lot to do with it this
- 1:24Speaker 2: week compared to last week.
- 1:28Speaker 4: I'm curious.
- 1:29Speaker 3: How many beers do you typically have at a game?
- 1:34Speaker 2: When I had this game, I had two. Three.
- 1:40Speaker 3: Two.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I think I had two.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Okay. Just curious, you know. They're not cheap, you know.
- 1:48Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I mean, it depends on what you do before the game,
- 1:55Speaker 2: I think.
- 1:55Speaker 4: That's true.
- 1:56Speaker 2: For the game itself, I.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I have probably quite a few thoughts. I don't know.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Mostly positive, I will say, for this game. And we'll
- 2:11Speaker 2: just start the caveat here with Bowling Green. It's Bowling Green.
- 2:15Speaker 2: And I don't think they were great. But that doesn't
- 2:18Speaker 2: mean that we can't do a lot of really good
- 2:21Speaker 2: things to a team that's not very good and do
- 2:24Speaker 2: what we're supposed to do. And being in control the
- 2:28Speaker 2: entire game from start to finish, well, maybe not right
- 2:31Speaker 2: away at the start, but after that weird, like, interception thing,
- 2:37Speaker 2: fumble thing that happened, you know, it was pretty much
- 2:42Speaker 2: in control the whole game. We led 35-0 at halftime.
- 2:46Speaker 2: We had 369 yards at halftime, finished with over close
- 2:52Speaker 2: to 550, and Bowling Green was held to less than
- 2:57Speaker 2: 10 first downs and 169 yards. So, like, The biggest
- 3:04Speaker 2: thing was we did what we were supposed to do,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and there's not a whole lot else that you know
- 3:10Speaker 2: you're going to be looking for here when you play
- 3:13Speaker 2: a team like this. I was looking at some scores
- 3:16Speaker 2: from the earlier games, and I'm like, when are we
- 3:19Speaker 2: going to do this to a team? Like, not an
- 3:22Speaker 2: FCS team. Well, even an FCS team. We did.
- 3:27Speaker 4: We did. Yeah, no, I agree. Most part positives.
- 3:33Speaker 3: The third quarter didn't make me feel great, but it wasn't,
- 3:38Speaker 3: we didn't give up any points. We just didn't look,
- 3:41Speaker 3: I don't know what was going on in the third quarter.
- 3:43Speaker 3: We just came a little flat and they came with
- 3:44Speaker 3: a little extra juice, but yeah, I mean, there was
- 3:48Speaker 3: a point, I think at the end of the half,
- 3:49Speaker 3: we had 35 points and they had 46 yards of offense.
- 3:52Speaker 3: So tough to complain about.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Well, not a whole lot going wrong for us.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Um, And yeah, I mean, other schools, that's just what
- 4:05Speaker 3: you're supposed.
- 4:05Speaker 4: To do against teams in Bowling Green's position, unfortunately.
- 4:10Speaker 2: And I think we can't take for granted to let's
- 4:16Speaker 2: not get caught up in the fact that we don't
- 4:19Speaker 2: do this to teams. We haven't done this to teams
- 4:23Speaker 2: very often like we're supposed to in the past. And
- 4:27Speaker 2: I know that's what everybody wants and everybody's like, yeah,
- 4:30Speaker 2: this is what's supposed to happen. Well, What's supposed to
- 4:32Speaker 2: happen has not happened in a lot of games. It
- 4:37Speaker 2: was funny listening to the radio show on the way
- 4:39Speaker 2: home and people calling in and people just nitpicking stuff,
- 4:45Speaker 2: which I guess that's what the shows are for. Overall,
- 4:51Speaker 2: this game was....
- 4:53Speaker 3: This is what you want your team to look like.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Yeah, you can only put who you put in front
- 5:00Speaker 2: of you. This is who you scheduled. Like I said,
- 5:03Speaker 2: we've talked about the schedule. I would much rather in
- 5:08Speaker 2: today's landscape be playing Bowling Green than playing Tennessee in
- 5:12Speaker 2: this game.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Especially when you're a cusp. We're not even a cusp team.
- 5:20Speaker 3: The Ohio States and the Texases, they can get away
- 5:22Speaker 3: with losing to each other. They can have a couple
- 5:27Speaker 3: losses and still make the playoffs because of where they're
- 5:29Speaker 3: starting at the season. you know, teams like us who
- 5:32Speaker 3: are unranked, if you want to make the playoffs, you
- 5:34Speaker 3: can't one loss in your, it's going to be tough.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:39Speaker 2: So, like I said, I think it was overall like
- 5:46Speaker 2: good teams remove any like sort of variance or hope
- 5:50Speaker 2: against inferior opponents. And we did that very early. And
- 5:53Speaker 2: by halftime we were in control. And the second, you know, third,
- 5:56Speaker 2: second half start of the third quarter, uh, the, you know,
- 5:59Speaker 2: the third quarter, there's a little bit of, I guess
- 6:03Speaker 2: there's a drive by Bowling Green there, but I do
- 6:06Speaker 2: think maybe there are some subs, whatever. I think in
- 6:09Speaker 2: the past we've allowed these lesser teams to hang around,
- 6:12Speaker 2: you know, doing things. I mean, I'll just go back
- 6:15Speaker 2: to last week and I think Ohio's much better than
- 6:19Speaker 2: Bowling Green, but that first half, the way that Ohio
- 6:21Speaker 2: game went, that didn't happen this week. And that it,
- 6:25Speaker 2: There are still a couple of penalties that we'll get
- 6:26Speaker 2: to here in a bit, but for the most part,
- 6:28Speaker 2: everything was a lot cleaner. And it just, like I said,
- 6:33Speaker 2: total control from Nebraska here from basically start to finish.
- 6:38Speaker 2: So I know we used to do the grades. I mean,
- 6:42Speaker 2: for me, this overall, this grade is... This is A.
- 6:46Speaker 3: It's tough to be lower than an A.
- 6:51Speaker 2: It wasn't A +. Like, A-plus is... A-plus is perfect, right?
- 6:55Speaker 2: Everything was perfect from start to finish. It wasn't that.
- 6:59Speaker 2: There was a couple of things, but like I said,
- 7:02Speaker 2: I asked Dak for his grade. He's not joining us
- 7:04Speaker 2: this morning, but he said B-plus because you can't get
- 7:08Speaker 2: an A against a Bowling Green team. It's not possible.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I said, well, you have to because it's a scale.
- 7:15Speaker 2: So if we're not going to do that, an A
- 7:18Speaker 2: against a bad team, I mean, what else are you
- 7:20Speaker 2: supposed to do? We can do a 0-100, 100 being
- 7:23Speaker 2: the best and 0 being the worst. That's what the
- 7:25Speaker 2: scale is kind of supposed to do. I know what
- 7:29Speaker 2: he's trying to say, but again, what else are you
- 7:31Speaker 2: supposed to do against a team like this? If they're
- 7:34Speaker 2: not very good and that's your opinion, then evaluate it
- 7:39Speaker 2: off of that. Like I said, having an A in
- 7:42Speaker 2: a game won has not happened often either. Anyways, that
- 7:48Speaker 2: was my... Overall take is a lot of positives, and
- 7:51Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing, too, is there was clear
- 7:55Speaker 2: improvement and progress from week one. That, to me, is big,
- 8:02Speaker 2: and I do think continuing progress from this is like
- 8:07Speaker 2: you obviously can continue to build, but what visual progress
- 8:11Speaker 2: looks like against a team that's really not great in
- 8:14Speaker 2: Bowling Green versus your North Dakota, who's supposed to be better,
- 8:18Speaker 2: but then Big Den play, it's going to look a
- 8:20Speaker 2: bit different, right? It's not going to look like everything's
- 8:22Speaker 2: good because the other team is going to give a
- 8:24Speaker 2: little more resistance.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I saw, you know, we talked about
- 8:30Speaker 3: it Thursday and mentioned it on our tailgate pod of
- 8:34Speaker 3: like what I want to see. I want to see
- 8:37Speaker 3: thing because this is a, again, this is a team
- 8:40Speaker 3: that you're supposed to beat. So you kind of want
- 8:41Speaker 3: to see some stuff that might trickle down later in
- 8:45Speaker 3: the season. And I thought, you know, I like, I
- 8:48Speaker 3: liked the play calls. I thought Calandra looked sharp. I'm
- 8:50Speaker 3: definitely more of a Bluebird this week than I was
- 8:52Speaker 3: last week. Particularly in the passing game. Defensively, we looked sharper.
- 9:01Speaker 3: I don't know if that was a product of Owen
- 9:03Speaker 3: Chambliss being back or just a worse team, but, you know,
- 9:08Speaker 3: outside of the seven penalties, I was... There's really nothing
- 9:13Speaker 3: to be upset about.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Like, it was... we were two for two on fourth downs.
- 9:18Speaker 4: Like every run felt like it was like at least
- 9:23Speaker 4: five yards. It, we had.
- 9:28Speaker 3: One touchdown called back, you know, nice long run by
- 9:33Speaker 3: Klander that got called back on a holding penalty by Barney.
- 9:38Speaker 3: And which is the second week in a row that
- 9:41Speaker 3: that's happened to him, unfortunately.
- 9:44Speaker 4: But yeah, I.
- 9:46Speaker 3: I felt, I don't know, at least the games, like,
- 9:51Speaker 3: I was thinking about this when I was watching it,
- 9:53Speaker 3: I was like, I was enjoying watching us win, but also,
- 9:56Speaker 3: by the end of the first half, I was like, okay,
- 9:59Speaker 3: I kind of wish this was a more fun game
- 10:01Speaker 3: to watch.
- 10:01Speaker 4: And then the third quarter happened.
- 10:04Speaker 3: I was like, okay, I wish this was a more
- 10:05Speaker 3: fun game to watch in a different sense.
- 10:09Speaker 4: Yeah, it was an A. I can't nitpick too much.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and I will say, to our offense. Like, I
- 10:20Speaker 2: feel like we're finally seeing what this identity looks like
- 10:24Speaker 2: and what it could look like. Um, as we get
- 10:27Speaker 2: into big 10 play, we know we've, we're at over
- 10:30Speaker 2: a thousand yards offense here in, in, in two games,
- 10:33Speaker 2: over 500 yards in both games. Uh, we mentioned the,
- 10:38Speaker 2: the run, the run game, the offensive lines, I doing it.
- 10:43Speaker 2: I don't know if I can say living up to
- 10:45Speaker 2: their preseason hype, but supposed to be the best offensive line,
- 10:49Speaker 2: We've had, right? That's the narrative. 7.8 yards per carry
- 10:53Speaker 2: by our running backs. Jamal Rule having another very good game.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I think he's distinguishing himself as our RB1. I know
- 11:03Speaker 2: I think subs and or it sounds like maybe he
- 11:07Speaker 2: had some tightness as well, which is why he maybe
- 11:11Speaker 2: didn't get more, but got the first carry this week.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I was wrong on that. I thought maybe we would
- 11:15Speaker 2: continue to bounce around our our running backs and nope,
- 11:19Speaker 2: like Jamal rule earned his first carry this week. And
- 11:23Speaker 2: I think it maintained and built upon that as being
- 11:27Speaker 2: our RB one, this going into next week. So like, again,
- 11:31Speaker 2: another really good day. And then you mentioned Calandria, right? The, the,
- 11:35Speaker 2: the ability for that, he, the things that he can do,
- 11:37Speaker 2: not just with his legs. We still really haven't seen,
- 11:41Speaker 2: we saw the flash of it. It didn't count, but
- 11:45Speaker 2: he is, he's, he's, One, the ability to identify pressure
- 11:51Speaker 2: or maybe a missed block here or there on the
- 11:52Speaker 2: offensive line and not allow that to just end the
- 11:56Speaker 2: play immediately is huge. And then his arm again, he's
- 12:02Speaker 2: a very accurate passer. And he zips them in there.
- 12:07Speaker 2: But he was 20 for 24 this week, 83%, which
- 12:10Speaker 2: is much better than last week.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Much better.
- 12:15Speaker 2: You're not going to get that every week, but we're
- 12:17Speaker 2: going to see some of both games, I think throughout
- 12:20Speaker 2: his time here in Nebraska of completion percentage, if you're
- 12:23Speaker 2: looking just at the numbers, but to me, it's not
- 12:27Speaker 2: all going to be about, okay, whether he's completing passes
- 12:30Speaker 2: or isn't his percentages. A lot of it is his, his,
- 12:34Speaker 2: I call it his moxie or his swagger, but his,
- 12:37Speaker 2: his confidence and his ability to like, just be a
- 12:42Speaker 2: gamer in play, right? Nothing to me. You just tell
- 12:45Speaker 2: nothing phases him. He, he got me to the point
- 12:50Speaker 2: that I'm like, man, I don't questioning the Trey Taylor
- 12:54Speaker 2: future thing. Like I, I think I just want to
- 12:57Speaker 2: have a, a vet, not a veteran, but we have
- 13:00Speaker 2: a veteran, a junior up quarterback in the portal every
- 13:04Speaker 2: year because they've played so many games and, and are
- 13:10Speaker 2: they may have talent may not, but they just have
- 13:13Speaker 2: played so many games that they're just players or dudes. They're,
- 13:16Speaker 2: They've been in environments before, right? Like, I kind of
- 13:19Speaker 2: like that.
- 13:19Speaker 4: You don't have to deal with the learning curve.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Right. There's no learning curve. And then the worst part
- 13:24Speaker 2: about it, when it comes to our fans and media,
- 13:27Speaker 2: if something bad does happen to a freshman or sophomore,
- 13:30Speaker 2: then you just say, well, he's a freshman or sophomore.
- 13:32Speaker 2: He's got to learn from it. Well, you don't have
- 13:34Speaker 2: to if you just get a guy from the portal, right? Like,
- 13:37Speaker 2: go grab a guy that's played in a lot of
- 13:39Speaker 2: games and done some of this stuff. And that showed
- 13:42Speaker 2: again against Bowling Green, but it showed again from Calandria
- 13:45Speaker 2: that he just– He's played a lot of football in
- 13:47Speaker 2: a lot of different places, in a lot of environments,
- 13:50Speaker 2: and has dealt with a lot of stuff. And I
- 13:52Speaker 2: think that's going to help us a lot more than
- 13:54Speaker 2: we realize when it comes to Big Ten play.
- 13:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:59Speaker 4: No, I probably mostly agree.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Obviously, there's that frustration, but it is fun to see
- 14:10Speaker 3: guys that have been on your team for three years
- 14:14Speaker 3: that you've watched progress, you know, there is that aspect
- 14:17Speaker 3: of like, okay, these are, this is like, this is
- 14:19Speaker 3: our guy, you know, but as far as production goes, yeah,
- 14:23Speaker 3: it's tough to argue with getting rid of the pain
- 14:26Speaker 3: of the freshmen, not figuring it out. No, obviously you
- 14:33Speaker 3: look at the bigger, you know, the bigger fish right
- 14:36Speaker 3: now and they get the freshmen that don't seem to
- 14:40Speaker 3: have those problems as much you know that's not an
- 14:43Speaker 3: issue for a lot of those freshmen but um the
- 14:48Speaker 3: other I guess in relation to our offense and our
- 14:52Speaker 3: passing game I have found it interesting who obviously Barney
- 15:00Speaker 3: has been the hot target as Gilmer as Gilmore um
- 15:06Speaker 3: Nadia Hunter has really hardly been targeted which is i
- 15:12Speaker 3: think interesting like mckay nelson seems to be a more
- 15:15Speaker 3: favorable receiver target than hunter i do think barney i
- 15:19Speaker 3: love him but boy he's not going to play the
- 15:22Speaker 3: whole season because he always is trying to stay up
- 15:24Speaker 3: and he's going to get smoked one of these times
- 15:26Speaker 3: that was the other thing i was like oh dude
- 15:28Speaker 3: you're going to get killed we're going to play some
- 15:30Speaker 3: big 10 team some linebackers may come from behind while
- 15:32Speaker 3: you're moving laterally and just just wreck you because that
- 15:37Speaker 3: happened once this game where he got up a little
- 15:39Speaker 3: slower And then he immediately caught the pass after.
- 15:42Speaker 4: I was like, eh, it's a long season.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Real quick, I've had a couple of listeners, Austin, that
- 15:51Speaker 2: are unhappy with some of your takes, but I will
- 15:56Speaker 2: say your take there on the Ja'Cory Barney thing is
- 16:01Speaker 2: matching up with that. That made me laugh because, yeah,
- 16:07Speaker 2: that may not happen. that may not happen.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't, I'm trying to think what else, what
- 16:19Speaker 3: else happened in this game that I, that I, that
- 16:21Speaker 3: was like, oh, okay, that, that's, I do think, I know,
- 16:25Speaker 3: I do, I probably agree Jamal rules worked his way
- 16:28Speaker 3: more towards the starting guy, but McKay Nelson, I mean,
- 16:33Speaker 3: he's been like rules that have not been used in
- 16:35Speaker 3: the passing game yet. Really? I think he had one
- 16:37Speaker 3: big catch last week. But I think they like passing
- 16:40Speaker 3: it to Makai, and he's still pretty productive on the ground.
- 16:44Speaker 3: So I don't think, outside of Jamal Rule's big run
- 16:47Speaker 3: this week, I don't think there was anything there. I
- 16:50Speaker 3: think we're just going to be.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Isaiah Mosey, he had a decent week this week in
- 16:58Speaker 3: the second half, particularly.
- 17:00Speaker 4: But I think it's still Jamal Rule and Makai Nelson, one-two.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I mean, I would say, for the most part, like,
- 17:12Speaker 2: I guess rules sticking out to me a little more
- 17:15Speaker 2: is the way he runs, but I agree. I think
- 17:17Speaker 2: there's a place for these other guys situationally, and I
- 17:21Speaker 2: also just think it's important to have, I call them
- 17:26Speaker 2: just solid backups and guys that you can trust not to, one,
- 17:30Speaker 2: fumble the ball, but two, that have played significant snaps
- 17:34Speaker 2: elsewhere as well, and just having multiple guys to go
- 17:37Speaker 2: to and turn to is a plus. Um, and speaking
- 17:42Speaker 2: of that too, go, go into our receivers. You know,
- 17:44Speaker 2: you mentioned Isaiah Hunter, not getting much production, watching it
- 17:47Speaker 2: like in person and at the game, having three guys
- 17:50Speaker 2: and they're all numbered one, two, and three, which is
- 17:52Speaker 2: to me, just awesome. Like they're, they're all like very
- 17:57Speaker 2: athletic type of players too. They're, they're unique in their
- 18:02Speaker 2: own way. But like, I think we got, I don't
- 18:04Speaker 2: know that we have one like playmaker stud, which sometimes
- 18:07Speaker 2: is nice to have, but you have three guys that,
- 18:10Speaker 2: have some speed, have some, they can get open. Let's
- 18:13Speaker 2: put it, let's start there, right? They can, they can
- 18:16Speaker 2: run a really good route and get open on their routes.
- 18:18Speaker 2: And then also after they catch it, they can make
- 18:21Speaker 2: a guy miss. And yeah, Barney's getting the catches now,
- 18:26Speaker 2: but I do think all three of those guys, it
- 18:30Speaker 2: makes it harder to guard when you got three guys
- 18:32Speaker 2: out there that can all do similar stuff as far
- 18:35Speaker 2: as getting open and making plays. So I agree like that, Again,
- 18:40Speaker 2: a good sign heading into the North Dakota game this week.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Flipping over to the other side of the ball here,
- 18:47Speaker 2: the word that Matt Rule has used a couple of times,
- 18:52Speaker 2: I think he might have even used it, I know
- 18:55Speaker 2: he used it right after in the postgame, suffocating. The
- 18:57Speaker 2: defense became suffocating. You know, he mentioned some of the
- 19:00Speaker 2: stats on the first downs, nine first downs, two of
- 19:04Speaker 2: 12 on third down. I kept looking up at the
- 19:07Speaker 2: board at halftime, third quarter, even after they're driving, like, man,
- 19:11Speaker 2: they just, they, they don't have any yards. They, they, they,
- 19:14Speaker 2: they can't, they just can't move the ball. And it
- 19:16Speaker 2: was true. Like you watch that game, you go, man,
- 19:19Speaker 2: like it was, it just felt like they couldn't do
- 19:21Speaker 2: anything on offense. And they, we, we made them look
- 19:24Speaker 2: like not a very good offense. Whereas last week, there
- 19:26Speaker 2: were times that you thought that Ohio quarterback might look
- 19:29Speaker 2: pretty decent.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Right.
- 19:32Speaker 2: So I, I think that's a good word to use
- 19:34Speaker 2: and from coach rule suffocating. And, and again, It's what
- 19:38Speaker 2: you're supposed to do if you're that much better in
- 19:41Speaker 2: what it is. But not taken away from, that was
- 19:45Speaker 2: really good to see that this defense do. I still
- 19:50Speaker 2: think that the pressure from our defensive line wasn't like,
- 19:58Speaker 2: oh my gosh, we got some pressure this week. There
- 20:00Speaker 2: were times, obviously, that we did, but that wasn't something
- 20:03Speaker 2: that jumped off the board as a huge thing, but again, overall,
- 20:08Speaker 2: defense did A lot of really good things this week.
- 20:12Speaker 2: And was impressed with how we held Bowling Green to
- 20:15Speaker 2: little to nothing.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I'm with you.
- 20:22Speaker 3: I would have liked to see more from our front
- 20:24Speaker 3: four getting pressure. But, I mean, we played a ton
- 20:28Speaker 3: of defensive players throughout the game. Just, you know, that's
- 20:32Speaker 3: the way. Even though we had a big lead. usually
- 20:35Speaker 3: when you start putting in those backups, you know, that's
- 20:38Speaker 3: when they might score a couple times, but sure, they
- 20:41Speaker 3: got one touchdown there in the fourth, but even with
- 20:46Speaker 3: our backups, we were still just getting to the ball
- 20:49Speaker 3: and keeping them from getting yards.
- 20:52Speaker 4: Their run game was pretty ineffective.
- 20:56Speaker 3: I feel, I don't even know what their total yards
- 20:58Speaker 3: were rushing. Let's see, where is it? 32 attempts for
- 21:01Speaker 3: 85 yards. Yeah, like, That was not, I mean, their
- 21:07Speaker 3: best offensive plays was when Kess, was it Constantine? Whenever
- 21:13Speaker 3: Constantine would scramble and get out of the pocket that that's,
- 21:16Speaker 3: and we saw that a little bit last week. And
- 21:18Speaker 3: I think that's not an uncommon thing to experience is
- 21:20Speaker 3: when the quarterback gets out of a broken pocket and,
- 21:24Speaker 3: you know, maybe it gets eight to 10 yards because.
- 21:28Speaker 4: It's a broken play and that's just how it works out.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Um, Yeah, I think our offense makes me think, like, okay,
- 21:41Speaker 3: we can win games with our offense, and our defense
- 21:43Speaker 3: thinks we can probably not lose games with our defense,
- 21:49Speaker 3: if that makes sense. Like, I haven't been inspired by
- 21:51Speaker 3: our defense. Like, oh, wow, we're so fast and violent.
- 21:56Speaker 3: You know, we're getting great pressure, but it's like, it's solid.
- 22:00Speaker 3: I feel decent about it. It's... There's not a huge
- 22:05Speaker 3: gap in it where I feel like we can be
- 22:08Speaker 3: easily exposed.
- 22:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and the last thing I'll say, what you said
- 22:12Speaker 2: about the depth and some other guys too, Lateef gets in,
- 22:17Speaker 2: looks very solid with what he got in. He got
- 22:19Speaker 2: some backup playing time. Again, it's not just saying, oh,
- 22:22Speaker 2: we got our backups in. I do think getting guys
- 22:25Speaker 2: that if there's injuries and things that happen, you get
- 22:28Speaker 2: other guys out there, and there's obviously guys that work
- 22:30Speaker 2: their butt off.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Practice and scout team and all that, they get to
- 22:35Speaker 2: see the field, which is rewarding as well. I mean,
- 22:38Speaker 2: I think that that's all important to have a game
- 22:40Speaker 2: to be able to do that. And because you never know,
- 22:44Speaker 2: like injuries often do happen. And I'm not just talking quarterback.
- 22:49Speaker 2: I'm talking everywhere on the field. And you never know
- 22:53Speaker 2: that halfway through the season. Now you got to play right.
- 22:56Speaker 2: And you're playing significant snaps and you don't want to
- 23:00Speaker 2: be the one that has a busted coverage. or a
- 23:04Speaker 2: huge schematic mistake, you know, because you did something wrong
- 23:11Speaker 2: on the offensive line, right? Like, you got to get
- 23:15Speaker 2: those reps, and that's big. That was good to get,
- 23:18Speaker 2: good to see.
- 23:18Speaker 3: I mean, it does feel– I do think this is
- 23:23Speaker 3: probably our deepest roster.
- 23:26Speaker 4: In a while.
- 23:28Speaker 3: I'm trying to think how far back I'd go where
- 23:30Speaker 3: I felt this decent about each position depth-wise. Basically, outside
- 23:34Speaker 3: of the defensive line, I feel good across the board
- 23:39Speaker 3: about our starters and then maybe one or two guys,
- 23:42Speaker 3: you know, on the bench.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Here's my final question here for you is, has the
- 23:51Speaker 2: outlook on the season actually changed after this 2-0 start?
- 23:58Speaker 3: No.
- 23:58Speaker 4: I still think it's going to be a 6-7-1 season.
- 24:03Speaker 3: Well, I guess my only reason my outlook would change,
- 24:06Speaker 3: not because of how we played, but because of how
- 24:09Speaker 3: just everyone seems to, I mean, Oregon lost this week.
- 24:14Speaker 3: You know, last week we talked about all those teams
- 24:16Speaker 3: that gave, you know, trouble to Michigan, barely got by
- 24:21Speaker 3: Western Michigan.
- 24:22Speaker 4: And then this.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Year they beat a number 11 Oklahoma, but only 17
- 24:26Speaker 3: to 10. Like they're not, There's just other stuff going
- 24:29Speaker 3: on that makes you think, well, I don't know. Maybe
- 24:32Speaker 3: there's just something in the air this year. Ohio State,
- 24:35Speaker 3: they obviously played Texas, but they lost.
- 24:37Speaker 4: It's just.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Maybe that's where more of my optimism comes is Illinois lost.
- 24:46Speaker 3: The teams I thought would be decent are looking. It's
- 24:48Speaker 3: just maybe the talent is actually starting to spread. We've
- 24:53Speaker 3: talked about it, how teams are getting better because of
- 24:56Speaker 3: NIL money and how programs can.
- 24:58Speaker 4: All pay for it.
- 25:00Speaker 3: That cornerback that would go to Alabama to be a
- 25:03Speaker 3: third stringer for the first two years is now going to,
- 25:07Speaker 3: I don't know, Miami or Ohio because he can be
- 25:09Speaker 3: the top paid cornerback for their team and develop out there.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Maybe we're starting to see that.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Maybe that's why I feel a little bit different about it.
- 25:17Speaker 3: I still think we're probably a 7-win team, 6-7-win team,
- 25:21Speaker 3: but the way the rest of the games are going,
- 25:26Speaker 3: maybe we are that team that that unranked team that
- 25:30Speaker 3: annoys people.
- 25:30Speaker 2: I don't know if you heard Eddie George after the game.
- 25:35Speaker 2: He said, don't be surprised Nebraska makes some noise.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I'd be surprised. I'd be surprised.
- 25:43Speaker 2: I'm glad you brought the other team because that was
- 25:44Speaker 2: kind of the point I wanted to get to, right?
- 25:47Speaker 2: For once, we are 2-0 in covering the spread and
- 25:54Speaker 2: doing what we're supposed to do, but probably exceeding that.
- 25:58Speaker 2: I mean, Look at grades. I mean, look at maybe
- 26:01Speaker 2: where expectations were coming into the year and what we
- 26:03Speaker 2: were going to do. And a lot of people I heard,
- 26:05Speaker 2: 30-point spread this week? Like, when do we ever cover 30-plus? Like,
- 26:10Speaker 2: we never do that. Well, we did. For me, like,
- 26:14Speaker 2: I think there's probably more optimism. I'm not saying Kool-Aid drinking,
- 26:21Speaker 2: but there's some optimism that we can win some of
- 26:24Speaker 2: these games. Like, if you were setting preseason spreads... on
- 26:28Speaker 2: the rest of our season. I would say the line
- 26:31Speaker 2: is moving in our direction on, I mean, can you
- 26:36Speaker 2: name one that's not?
- 26:38Speaker 4: Ohio State might not have moved.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Maybe that stays. I know the way they lost was crazy,
- 26:44Speaker 2: but I guess maybe Iowa. Iowa might be another one,
- 26:49Speaker 2: but even them squeaking out a win this week against
- 26:52Speaker 2: Iowa State. Washington wins, but they win a close one.
- 26:57Speaker 2: So it's just funny, if you're setting lines beginning of
- 27:00Speaker 2: the year and then moving them one way or the other,
- 27:02Speaker 2: not just a Nebraska fan, a lot of them are
- 27:04Speaker 2: moving in our direction. So I guess, yeah, you should
- 27:07Speaker 2: feel a little bit better about win projections and where
- 27:12Speaker 2: you're looking at. Do I think that that means we're
- 27:13Speaker 2: going to beat Oregon?
- 27:15Speaker 4: No.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Part of me is like, it might even hurt us
- 27:19Speaker 2: because if Oregon truly isn't great, now they're really going
- 27:23Speaker 2: to be locked in. Um, now going in, we thought there,
- 27:28Speaker 2: everybody thought they were really good, right? National title team,
- 27:31Speaker 2: a really favorite trendy pick. I, that clearly wasn't going
- 27:35Speaker 2: to happen if they can't take care of business against
- 27:38Speaker 2: what happened at Oklahoma state. So who knows, maybe Oklahoma
- 27:42Speaker 2: state's the next Indiana, but I actually know Oklahoma state
- 27:47Speaker 2: lost week one, didn't they?
- 27:50Speaker 1: Bad.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Yep. So anyways, I, I think it is. That was
- 27:55Speaker 2: my one thought, too. It's like, well, if you want
- 27:58Speaker 2: to think we're better or our season outlook's looking better, well,
- 28:01Speaker 2: I do think if you looked at Vegas, looked at
- 28:04Speaker 2: spreads heading into the year now, it is moving towards us,
- 28:08Speaker 2: which gives you some reason to be optimistic and maybe
- 28:12Speaker 2: not say we're going to win 10 or 11 games,
- 28:14Speaker 2: but we're going to win. We have a better chance
- 28:17Speaker 2: of winning some of these games that maybe we thought
- 28:19Speaker 2: were going to be tough to do.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I know last week I said my expectation shifted
- 28:26Speaker 3: more to the six than a seven.
- 28:28Speaker 4: This week I'm probably back close to the seven. I
- 28:33Speaker 4: hope to be pleasantly surprised, of course, but maybe I'm
- 28:36Speaker 4: just jaded, a little scarred.
- 28:38Speaker 2: I'm going to keep saying it until the end of
- 28:39Speaker 2: the season. I want to just finally hit an overwin total,
- 28:44Speaker 2: like one time, please.
- 28:46Speaker 4: Wouldn't that be seven this year?
- 28:47Speaker 2: It'd be seven.
- 28:49Speaker 3: You'd be disappointed with seven, don't lie to me. Did
- 28:52Speaker 3: you bet us for the under?
- 28:53Speaker 2: No.
- 28:54Speaker 4: I bet the over. Okay. Put your money where your
- 28:58Speaker 4: mouth is. I appreciate it.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Got to get to seven. All right. We'll be back
- 29:05Speaker 2: this week, every morning here, as we head into North
- 29:10Speaker 2: Dakota week. North Dakota, the fighting Sioux. Is that correct?
- 29:18Speaker 3: That sounds right. It feels like wrong, but I do
- 29:21Speaker 3: believe that is correct.
- 29:25Speaker 2: All righty. Go Big Red.
- 29:27Speaker 4: Keep going.
- 29:28Speaker 1: The headlines change, but the mission stays. From Memorial Stadium
- 29:32Speaker 1: to PBA days.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Football Saturdays, basketball nights.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Every story chasing red and white.
- 29:38Speaker 4: Recruiting buzzed.
- 29:40Speaker 5: Time commits.
- 29:41Speaker 4: Camp battles, coaching hits.
- 29:43Speaker 5: Transfer moves and rising stars. The road to glory's never far.
