- 1:10Speaker 2: I'm good, guys doing good?
- 1:12Speaker 4: Hey man, stop stop? What I like Mobile Alabama?
- 1:19Speaker 3: Well, then you know what most the tour.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Of the USS Alabama in Mobile Alabama.
- 1:25Speaker 3: It was you're going on a vacation soon. Where are
- 1:27Speaker 3: you going? Oh? Why not Mobile? Well I've already been
- 1:31Speaker 3: to Mobile. Oh you've never been to France before?
- 1:34Speaker 2: About that?
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah, my bad. Anyway, Jeff, you were there for the.
- 1:37Speaker 6: Senior nobody's invaded at Orange Beach, so he's not gonna
- 1:42Speaker 6: go much.
- 1:43Speaker 5: Yes, uh, Jeff, you were there for the Senior Bowl,
- 1:46Speaker 5: and I remember just off the top there was a
- 1:50Speaker 5: drill between defensive line and offensive lineman. Some kid from
- 1:52Speaker 5: Marshall absolutely obliterated. Somebody was there like that was all
- 1:57Speaker 5: over ESPN.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Anyway, what was.
- 1:58Speaker 5: Your overall takeaway of the Senior Bowl from a Broncos perspective?
- 2:02Speaker 3: What do you think they're looking at in this Senior Bowl?
- 2:07Speaker 6: Well, I mean, at this point, you know, if you're
- 2:09Speaker 6: the Broncos, you're obviously looking for some some offensive pop
- 2:14Speaker 6: on offense, and you know a lot of times at
- 2:17Speaker 6: the Senior Ball you're really kind of looking, you know, okay,
- 2:20Speaker 6: where's somebody down the board? You know, second second day,
- 2:24Speaker 6: third day, where could we sneak an athlete you know,
- 2:28Speaker 6: into the draft class? And you know there is a
- 2:30Speaker 6: lot of that, and then some of it is you know,
- 2:34Speaker 6: some developmental guys, like you'll see, you know that the
- 2:37Speaker 6: guy might not be a finished product or you know,
- 2:41Speaker 6: have a little you know, rough around the edges, but
- 2:43Speaker 6: maybe two years from now, especially among the alignemen, you know,
- 2:47Speaker 6: with a little work or you know whatever. I think
- 2:50Speaker 6: that's a lot of the Senior Bowl now is is
- 2:54Speaker 6: kind of looking at those middle round guys and really
- 2:57Speaker 6: thinking can we find some impact there? And sometimes, you know,
- 3:01Speaker 6: guys will shock you just by how good they look
- 3:04Speaker 6: in person. And I think one thing I always see
- 3:09Speaker 6: is who's really prepared for the week, Like who really
- 3:12Speaker 6: put in the time after their season, after a long season?
- 3:16Speaker 2: Who did the work?
- 3:19Speaker 6: And I'll tell you one guy that impressed me, and
- 3:21Speaker 6: if I'm the Broncos, I certainly look is Oregon linebacker
- 3:27Speaker 6: named Bassa, Jeffrey Bassa.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Now that guy looked like he was still.
- 3:32Speaker 6: In season when he showed up, I mean he was
- 3:36Speaker 6: you could tell he had done the work to get
- 3:38Speaker 6: ready to be at the Senior Ball.
- 3:39Speaker 2: So I think guys like that are people they look at.
- 3:43Speaker 5: One name just specifically real quick that I know some
- 3:45Speaker 5: Broncos fans have been talking about, Hey, maybe a mid
- 3:48Speaker 5: round guy that you could take that could help in
- 3:49Speaker 5: that skill position spot. Somebody who ran all over see
- 3:52Speaker 5: you this year was Devin Neil out of Kansas.
- 3:54Speaker 3: What do you think of him?
- 3:56Speaker 6: You know, he had just okay two days when I
- 3:58Speaker 6: was there. But again, you know that formats tough. You're
- 4:02Speaker 6: playing with quarterbacks you haven't been around. Uh sometimes you
- 4:06Speaker 6: haven't caught a pass from the guy or taken a
- 4:07Speaker 6: handoff from the guy until practice, you know.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So Uh, I think he you know.
- 4:13Speaker 6: He he can do everything they want. Uh, it's just
- 4:18Speaker 6: gonna be a matter of, you know, how much athleticism
- 4:22Speaker 6: he shows if he if he works out at the combine.
- 4:25Speaker 6: But he had he hit an okay week, not a
- 4:27Speaker 6: great week, but an okay week.
- 4:29Speaker 7: Jeffery, is there a tight end that you saw at
- 4:31Speaker 7: the Senior Ball that could emerge on the Broncos radar?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there are a couple who had good way.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I looked down at.
- 4:39Speaker 6: My uh, but I think the guy really popped for
- 4:45Speaker 6: people was a royal from Miami.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Uh.
- 4:48Speaker 2: He had a really good week.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Uh.
- 4:50Speaker 2: So that's that's sort of a down the board guy.
- 4:52Speaker 6: Now Fannin was there from Bowling Green and he had
- 4:57Speaker 6: just an okay week. I think the environment can be
- 5:00Speaker 6: tough for some guys. You know, suddenly you're thrown in
- 5:03Speaker 6: with the SEC and the you know, the big ten.
- 5:07Speaker 6: You know, you're just in the big pond. And he
- 5:10Speaker 6: showed his athleticism. You can see there's a lot there.
- 5:14Speaker 6: But I think Arroyo, for me, had had the best
- 5:17Speaker 6: week among the or the best days.
- 5:19Speaker 2: I was there among the tight ends.
- 5:20Speaker 4: Jeff. Back in the day, I guess the Senior Bowl
- 5:23Speaker 4: and I'll even say the East wast Shrine Game. Right,
- 5:25Speaker 4: these were pretty big deals, full of scouts and all
- 5:29Speaker 4: kind of thing. I'm sure they still are. But how
- 5:30Speaker 4: has it changed in terms of scouting, in terms of
- 5:33Speaker 4: preparation over the last let's say, twenty thirty years, from
- 5:36Speaker 4: what it once was to where it is right now?
- 5:39Speaker 6: I think a lot a lot more guys will sit
- 5:41Speaker 6: out now, the top guys. You know, the Senior Bowl.
- 5:44Speaker 6: The top guys used to all go there right right,
- 5:47Speaker 6: you know, because there wasn't so much contact between teams
- 5:53Speaker 6: and the players between the season and the draft as
- 5:56Speaker 6: there is now. I mean, teams are far more willing
- 6:00Speaker 6: a fly around all over the place for private workouts
- 6:03Speaker 6: than they were in the past. They teams just simply
- 6:06Speaker 6: spend more money than they used to on scouting because
- 6:11Speaker 6: in the salary cap world, the good teams, that's how
- 6:13Speaker 6: you stay good is spend your money in scouting. So
- 6:18Speaker 6: there's just a lot more of that going on, and
- 6:20Speaker 6: a lot of teams prefer to have their own sort
- 6:24Speaker 6: of bubble when they're working a guy out rather than
- 6:27Speaker 6: the you know, the swirl that is the Senior Bowl
- 6:31Speaker 6: or the Shrine Game or any of those. But what
- 6:34Speaker 6: you can do in an All Star game is still
- 6:36Speaker 6: get up close, interview guys, talk to them, and do
- 6:41Speaker 6: all of that. So that's a lot of what happens
- 6:44Speaker 6: off the field is sometimes even as important as on
- 6:48Speaker 6: the field.
- 6:48Speaker 4: See, that's the important part, right because I guess back
- 6:50Speaker 4: in the day it was probably harder to get film
- 6:52Speaker 4: on guys too, and some guys and some guys popped
- 6:55Speaker 4: at these things. You're going, well, who the hell is
- 6:56Speaker 4: this kid out of Western Michigan. That kind of thing, right,
- 6:58Speaker 4: because the scouts can't get everywhere. Now you've got film
- 7:01Speaker 4: on no matter where the guy plays. You probably got
- 7:03Speaker 4: a ton. But it's that, is it, not that interpersonal
- 7:05Speaker 4: thing that maybe gives you a leg up.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what they're looking for now.
- 7:10Speaker 6: I mean I can when I you know, thirty years ago,
- 7:13Speaker 6: when I was going to my first Senior Bowls, you know,
- 7:16Speaker 6: a guy would have a good week and and scouts
- 7:18Speaker 6: would literally tell you, man, I'm gonna have to go
- 7:21Speaker 6: back and do a lot more work on that guy
- 7:24Speaker 6: because they they didn't have the information on them. But
- 7:28Speaker 6: now scouting staffs are so much bigger, the technology is
- 7:33Speaker 6: so much better.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You know, they people.
- 7:36Speaker 6: Show up at the Senior Ball with long, vast reports
- 7:40Speaker 6: on all of these guys, and I find it amusing
- 7:44Speaker 6: every year people talking about sleepers at the Senior Ball.
- 7:48Speaker 6: I got news for you. If you're at the Senior Ball,
- 7:51Speaker 6: you're not a sleeper, and you're never going to be
- 7:53Speaker 6: at a sleeper. So it's like sleepers at the combine.
- 7:58Speaker 6: You're not a sleeper. If you're at the combine, you've
- 8:00Speaker 6: already been discovered and you're at the combine. So just
- 8:05Speaker 6: because you played at a small school doesn't make you
- 8:07Speaker 6: a sleeper anyway.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Been seeing some reports Jackson Dart could be sliding up
- 8:11Speaker 5: to like the second best quarterback on the board or
- 8:14Speaker 5: third best.
- 8:15Speaker 3: What did you see?
- 8:15Speaker 6: F Yeah, it'd be hard for me to believe he
- 8:18Speaker 6: makes it into the top two. But he didn't have
- 8:20Speaker 6: particularly good days when I was there, so especially the
- 8:24Speaker 6: first day.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Now, the first day for quarterbacks is always brutal.
- 8:28Speaker 6: Even last year when Nix and uh you know Pennix
- 8:33Speaker 6: were there, you know the apartment from Notre Dame, they
- 8:37Speaker 6: had a they all had a terrible first day. People
- 8:40Speaker 6: were like, do these guys even play quarterback? And it
- 8:44Speaker 6: was the same this year. Those guys really struggled on
- 8:48Speaker 6: the opening day, and Dart in particular, you know. But
- 8:52Speaker 6: that what happens is they put all these guys under
- 8:54Speaker 6: center right away, so they are practicing under center, and
- 8:59Speaker 6: you can l very few of them have been under
- 9:03Speaker 6: center very often.
- 9:05Speaker 2: I imagine, Oh there's fumbles, you know that.
- 9:08Speaker 6: Uh, you know, it's just you know, one poor one,
- 9:12Speaker 6: poor kid, that kid from Canada fumbled his first snap.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Of the first practice.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Uh.
- 9:17Speaker 6: Because they put you under center right away, and that's
- 9:20Speaker 6: the hardest thing for the quarterbacks at the Senior Bowl.
- 9:23Speaker 6: Everyone else is sort of put in a position to
- 9:26Speaker 6: perform well. They put the quarterbacks in the position to
- 9:30Speaker 6: just struggle as much as possible.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Uh. So those guys always have a tough week. Uh
- 9:37Speaker 2: down there.
- 9:37Speaker 6: But you know you could tell dark As he's got
- 9:41Speaker 6: plenty of arms, he's got some athleticism.
- 9:43Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:44Speaker 6: The question is what will always be how will you
- 9:48Speaker 6: work your progressions in a in an offense that isn't
- 9:51Speaker 6: one read and throw, you know, And that's that that'll
- 9:54Speaker 6: be what he has to address moving forward.
- 9:57Speaker 7: Jeffrey, I look at the Kansas City juggernaut that is okay,
- 10:02Speaker 7: and Mahomes isn't going anywhere.
- 10:04Speaker 6: They've got a lot of twenty nine I like to
- 10:07Speaker 6: remind everybody in twenty nine years jokers age.
- 10:09Speaker 7: But the other piece of that team that is dominant,
- 10:12Speaker 7: and it's proven dominant is their defense. And Spags the
- 10:15Speaker 7: way he runs that defense, the way he pushes buttons
- 10:17Speaker 7: on that defense. And my question has always been why
- 10:20Speaker 7: is Spags still there? How has no one decided to
- 10:24Speaker 7: give him another coaching chance as a head coach.
- 10:27Speaker 6: Defensive guys Big, you know, Spagnola, Vance, Joseph, those guys
- 10:34Speaker 6: have all done enough to earn another chance. When you
- 10:37Speaker 6: look at who's getting hired around the league, they just have.
- 10:41Speaker 6: But uh, you know how fan bases are. How do
- 10:44Speaker 6: people react when you hire a defensive coach. How does
- 10:47Speaker 6: an owner react when you hire a defensive coach. It's
- 10:52Speaker 6: it's just we you know, It's it's not that we
- 10:55Speaker 6: don't care about defense now, it just doesn't ring the bell.
- 10:58Speaker 6: And and that's those guys face such a tough road
- 11:03Speaker 6: to get their second chances, especially as head coaches.
- 11:07Speaker 2: It's just much harder for them to do.
- 11:11Speaker 6: And you know, I like to point out to people,
- 11:15Speaker 6: you know, Kansas City's last Super Bowl winner last year,
- 11:19Speaker 6: sixteen starters were draft picks. They have Mahomes, yes, but
- 11:24Speaker 6: sixteen of their starters in the game were draft picks
- 11:27Speaker 6: seventeen if you count the punter. So we can talk
- 11:31Speaker 6: about Mahomes and should, but they built a Super Bowl
- 11:37Speaker 6: competing team by building in April. We love March because
- 11:41Speaker 6: we know all the names, we know all the players,
- 11:44Speaker 6: and we know what they've done and we know their resumes.
- 11:47Speaker 2: But the real teams build in April.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Does every introductory news conference nowadays have to be a
- 11:54Speaker 4: freak show?
- 11:55Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's gotta be.
- 11:57Speaker 6: You gotta win the I love to win the press.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I mean what does that mean? I mean, who cares? Yeah?
- 12:04Speaker 6: I mean that's how about you win games and are
- 12:07Speaker 6: horrible and press conferences.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Let's do that.
- 12:09Speaker 4: I'd be good.
- 12:11Speaker 6: We do every everybody says, you know, I feel bad
- 12:15Speaker 6: for the guys because there's only so many ways you
- 12:18Speaker 6: can describe what you're gonna do.
- 12:20Speaker 2: We're gonna play fast.
- 12:21Speaker 6: And smart and tough and yeah, okay, I mean I
- 12:25Speaker 6: I just don't know what people want them to say.
- 12:28Speaker 2: You know, you know, I don't know if I'm ready
- 12:30Speaker 2: for this. You know, we might we might really be
- 12:33Speaker 2: we might really be horrible.
- 12:34Speaker 7: I want them to recite Merchant of Venice from Shakespeare.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I want an entire scene. That's what I speaking. Latin
- 12:42Speaker 2: or something cool, but that's what I want.
- 12:44Speaker 4: That Liam Clan seems like a weirdy no offense, I mean, you.
- 12:51Speaker 2: The community.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Weirdo, Adam Gays, big eyeballs.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I mean, don't even that stuff.
- 13:01Speaker 6: Just say, you know, I'm just you know, I'm here,
- 13:04Speaker 6: I'm ready for this job, and I'll you know, I'll
- 13:07Speaker 6: leave the cheers to the fans and we'll give them
- 13:09Speaker 6: something to cheer about. That's I mean, just deflect and
- 13:12Speaker 6: move on, don't try to do it.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Campbell and Sirianni a few years ago, they were weird.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I was and it worked out for them.
- 13:20Speaker 6: Yeah, But but Campbell was being himself. I think that's
- 13:25Speaker 6: you know, that was Dan Campbell being Dan Campbell. To me,
- 13:27Speaker 6: that's that's authentic, you know, anyone who knew him as
- 13:31Speaker 6: a player or his assistant coach. I think a lot
- 13:34Speaker 6: of guys are just they've been drilled you've got to
- 13:37Speaker 6: win the press conference, so they tried to do it.
- 13:41Speaker 2: And I just have never.
- 13:44Speaker 6: Like I'm gonna decide if a guy can coach or
- 13:46Speaker 6: not by the first eighteen minutes of his answering questions
- 13:50Speaker 6: of his career.
- 13:52Speaker 3: That's good. What a job interview is that.
- 13:53Speaker 5: I know it's at the press conference, but that's what
- 13:55Speaker 5: you're doing in the interviews with the owners and gms
- 13:57Speaker 5: and people like that.
- 13:58Speaker 3: I mean, it's kind.
- 13:59Speaker 6: Of obviously you did enough to get the job right,
- 14:02Speaker 6: you know, to decide you're suddenly going to be good
- 14:05Speaker 6: because he won the press conference.
- 14:06Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know, man.
- 14:08Speaker 6: I just I'd say, wait and see what it looks
- 14:11Speaker 6: like in training camp, but we don't want to do that.
- 14:13Speaker 3: One quick question for you before I let you go
- 14:16Speaker 3: about free agency.
- 14:17Speaker 5: The Broncos got a little bit of cash they can
- 14:18Speaker 5: spend and it's not like they're using a whole bunch
- 14:21Speaker 5: of it on I think re signing some guys. So
- 14:24Speaker 5: with that extra cash, would they think about going after
- 14:27Speaker 5: a veteran whiteout? Would they look at a Chris Godwin,
- 14:29Speaker 5: Would they look at if Cooper cup doesn't return to
- 14:31Speaker 5: the Rams like an option like that?
- 14:34Speaker 2: Well, I think certainly they'd be in on anything that
- 14:37Speaker 2: would add to the what they could give bo Nicks
- 14:41Speaker 2: around him. You know, I think that's that's certainly the case.
- 14:46Speaker 2: And whind Out.
- 14:47Speaker 6: It's a weak free agency class top to bottom if
- 14:50Speaker 6: you're talking all positions, but wind out is one place
- 14:54Speaker 6: where you could get immediate veteran help that could have impact,
- 15:00Speaker 6: and so I think that is one spot they will
- 15:03Speaker 6: look at. You know, if t Higgins is out there,
- 15:06Speaker 6: I would certainly think he fits. Sean Payton has a
- 15:09Speaker 6: pretty narrow view of what he likes in a wide receiver,
- 15:12Speaker 6: and a lot of the guys don't fit it. So
- 15:16Speaker 6: you got to have some size, and you got to
- 15:17Speaker 6: be able to play multiple spots, and you got to
- 15:20Speaker 6: be willing to stick your face in and block in
- 15:23Speaker 6: the run game. I mean, he's got a really specific
- 15:26Speaker 6: set of guidelines for receivers, and of the free agent
- 15:30Speaker 6: guys or guys who could be out there.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I think T.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Higgins fits at the best, but that will be the
- 15:36Speaker 6: most expensive as well, and probably would take most of
- 15:40Speaker 6: the cap room in many ways. And they are Carrion
- 15:44Speaker 6: thirty eight million or so debt money already, so some
- 15:48Speaker 6: of that space is not really space.
- 15:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:51Speaker 3: T Higgins, big, tull and fast, very.
- 15:54Speaker 2: What he wants.
- 15:55Speaker 6: He wants big whiteouts. I kind of chuckle when I
- 15:58Speaker 6: see people pairing all of the He's sort of nickel
- 16:01Speaker 6: slot receivers to Sean Payton, And every time I talk
- 16:05Speaker 6: to him about wide receivers, he's talking about guys who
- 16:08Speaker 6: are six two and but.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Little Jordan Humphreys stuck around so long.
- 16:13Speaker 6: He wants he wants. He makes no secret he wants
- 16:16Speaker 6: big guys out there. He doesn't think little guys can
- 16:18Speaker 6: get open unless they're very, very very special players. It's
- 16:22Speaker 6: just I'll give you I'll give you a name from
- 16:25Speaker 6: the senior ball people should look at under the radar,
- 16:29Speaker 6: that SMU running back Brishard Smith.
- 16:31Speaker 2: That that's a joker, that is a joker player in waiting.
- 16:35Speaker 2: How big, I don't even care.
- 16:38Speaker 6: No, I mean he's he's not too he's about two ten,
- 16:42Speaker 6: but he's a converted he's a converted wide receiver and
- 16:46Speaker 6: he rushed for thirteen hundred yards this year his first
- 16:49Speaker 6: year running back. This he that's a ballplayer and whoever
- 16:53Speaker 6: gets him is getting a ballplayer.
- 16:56Speaker 3: He's listed Brishard Smith. He's listed five to ten.
- 17:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 6: I think he actually weighed in at like two o
- 17:02Speaker 6: eight or something. But you talk about catching the ball
- 17:05Speaker 6: vision in the hole. Made the first guy miss every
- 17:09Speaker 6: single time, which is my really benchmark for a running back,
- 17:14Speaker 6: because if your running back is going to succeed in
- 17:17Speaker 6: the NFL, you have to get the one guy they
- 17:19Speaker 6: can't block.
