- 0:10Hey, hey, still.
- 0:11Let's go.
- 0:12I was born a killer.
- 0:13I was meant to win.
- 0:14I am down and willing,
- 0:15so I will find a way.
- 0:16It took a minute,
- 0:17now I didn't have to ride away.
- 0:19When it get hot in the kitchen,
- 0:20you decide to stay.
- 0:21That's how a winner's made.
- 0:23Stick a fork in the heater
- 0:24on my dinner plate.
- 0:32What's going on, everybody?
- 0:33Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast,
- 0:36where we're in the middle
- 0:37of a series where we're
- 0:38trying to highlight as many
- 0:40of the Masters CrossFit
- 0:41Games athletes as we possibly can do.
- 0:45And today, I get to catch up an old friend,
- 0:48Kelly Kelly.
- 0:49What's going on, Kelly?
- 0:50How's it going?
- 0:51It's going great.
- 0:52Yeah, yeah.
- 0:54So before we get into my questions,
- 0:57Corey Leonard was here early and he said,
- 1:00that is a fantastic picture.
- 1:02The picture I chose for the thumbnail.
- 1:06Yep.
- 1:08That's been a popular one.
- 1:09Yeah.
- 1:13Your cheese grins or
- 1:15whatever you want to call
- 1:16them into the cameras are almost iconic.
- 1:23I'm glad that's what I'm known for.
- 1:24If I have to be known for something,
- 1:26I don't mind that one.
- 1:28Yeah.
- 1:29Yeah.
- 1:29It's, um, as I was doing these, I was like,
- 1:32I want to get as fun of a
- 1:34picture as I can find of
- 1:36the person instead of just
- 1:37the standard workout picture.
- 1:39But you know,
- 1:41what's crazy is everybody does reels now.
- 1:44That's right.
- 1:45Yeah.
- 1:45Nobody does pictures.
- 1:49It's hard to find a still
- 1:50photo these days.
- 1:51It is so hard.
- 1:52So then I have to like try
- 1:53to screenshot it and hit
- 1:55just the right moment that
- 1:57it's not too blurry.
- 1:59Yeah.
- 2:01Or, you know, whatever.
- 2:02But thankfully you still do
- 2:05some still photography.
- 2:06Well, yes.
- 2:07Yeah.
- 2:08My husband still does some
- 2:09still photography.
- 2:11You still post still photography.
- 2:15Which is awesome.
- 2:17Makes my life a whole lot easier.
- 2:20Well, you will.
- 2:21I'll tell him.
- 2:22Yeah.
- 2:22It's all about me.
- 2:23Yeah.
- 2:27So, um, man, it's been,
- 2:29it's been a little over a
- 2:31year since we've talked.
- 2:33Yeah.
- 2:34Yeah.
- 2:34I guess semi-finals last year probably.
- 2:38Um,
- 2:39and back then you kind of threw out
- 2:42that that was going to be
- 2:43your last go and that you
- 2:47were going to focus on
- 2:48other things in life.
- 2:49Yeah.
- 2:50Yeah.
- 2:51That's what I did.
- 2:52And here we are a year later,
- 2:54and you're going to your
- 2:57first ever CrossFit Games.
- 2:59I am.
- 3:01The irony.
- 3:03Isn't that wild?
- 3:04I know.
- 3:05It's pretty crazy.
- 3:07So let's clean up some stuff.
- 3:09You actually qualified in
- 3:12the elite individual semifinals again.
- 3:15I did.
- 3:17And you chose to...
- 3:20decline that invitation and
- 3:22focus on masters.
- 3:24Yep.
- 3:24Can you explain to us why
- 3:25that was the decision?
- 3:28Is it just the new focus or other things?
- 3:32Um, there were a lot of factors involved.
- 3:35Um, there were,
- 3:37I yeah,
- 3:38I wasn't really expecting or
- 3:40planning to qualify in the open division.
- 3:43So I just I guess that
- 3:47wasn't the expectation.
- 3:48So it was a nice surprise to
- 3:50know that I could.
- 3:51But we were doing we were in
- 3:54like a big building phase
- 3:56for the some of the
- 4:00programs that I'm working on right now.
- 4:02And I was in, you know,
- 4:05a big pivotal phase
- 4:07trying to get on seminar
- 4:08staff and all of those things.
- 4:11And so it was just kind of
- 4:12not in the life priorities.
- 4:13It would have been really
- 4:14hard to like put together the time,
- 4:19the energy, the money,
- 4:20it would have meant that I competed.
- 4:21Like, you know, it would have been,
- 4:23I think it was quarterfinals.
- 4:30I forget which came first,
- 4:32individual semifinals,
- 4:33master's semifinals,
- 4:34all within like a four week period.
- 4:36Flip it and you're right.
- 4:38Yeah, that one.
- 4:39Faster semifinals than
- 4:41individual semifinals.
- 4:42Yeah.
- 4:43And I was just, that was just kind of like,
- 4:44it would have been a lot
- 4:46within a really short
- 4:47timeframe and it would have
- 4:49totally pulled my focus
- 4:51away from everything that I
- 4:53was trying to prioritize in my life.
- 4:55I would have had to focus on
- 4:57competition just to like
- 4:58take care of my body and
- 4:59make sure that I didn't
- 5:01break in all of that.
- 5:03And so it just, you know, and plus the,
- 5:05like the, you know,
- 5:06the travel and the expense and everything,
- 5:07we were kind of just like, you know,
- 5:08this is,
- 5:09This is just, it's a really cool thing.
- 5:12It would have been,
- 5:13there was definitely a
- 5:13bittersweet moment of like, oh,
- 5:15they brought it back to the
- 5:16tennis stadium.
- 5:17And of course,
- 5:18like the year it's at the tennis stadium,
- 5:20I said, no.
- 5:23So, you know,
- 5:24like hopefully they do that
- 5:25again in the future and, you know,
- 5:27maybe I'll be in a
- 5:28different place next time.
- 5:29But this year it just, you know,
- 5:33wasn't the right thing to prioritize.
- 5:36So you said something there
- 5:37that I learned.
- 5:38And so we're going to dive down that road.
- 5:39I know as many times as I've talked to you,
- 5:41coaching is very important to you.
- 5:43Yeah.
- 5:45You were,
- 5:46you were trying to make seminar staff.
- 5:48How did that go?
- 5:50And what, when did that become a priority?
- 5:53Yeah, no, I am.
- 5:55I'm on seminar staff now,
- 5:57so it went really well.
- 6:00Yep.
- 6:01So I started coaching seminars and yeah,
- 6:06I mean,
- 6:07seminar staff has been a goal that
- 6:10I've wanted to chase since
- 6:13I got my level two many years ago.
- 6:15And I just knew that I
- 6:18couldn't do that and be a
- 6:21competitive athlete at the
- 6:23same time well.
- 6:24There's a lot of travel.
- 6:28It's a demanding schedule.
- 6:30It's demanding on your energy.
- 6:32And I just wanted to make
- 6:33sure that I could give
- 6:35what I needed to give to it.
- 6:36I don't like doing things halfway.
- 6:38Thank you for whoever said congrats.
- 6:42Uplift WOD.
- 6:43Yeah.
- 6:43That was us.
- 6:44I think is who's sending that.
- 6:47Thank you very much.
- 6:48Yeah.
- 6:48It was a, it was a really big goal for me.
- 6:50And so that was one of the
- 6:53things that I had in mind
- 6:54when I said last year was
- 6:56going to be my last, you know,
- 6:57year prioritizing competition.
- 7:00As soon as my season was done,
- 7:02I immediately started the process of,
- 7:05applying for seminar staff
- 7:06and going through their
- 7:07internship process and all of that stuff.
- 7:10And it's,
- 7:10it's a long process and it takes
- 7:11a lot of work.
- 7:12Um, and even when you're on staff,
- 7:15there's still a huge learning curve.
- 7:18Um,
- 7:19so there's a lot of studying and a lot
- 7:21of learning and a lot of, you know,
- 7:23you're taking a lot of
- 7:24feedback and you're iterating.
- 7:25And so it's, it's a big commitment.
- 7:28It's, it takes a lot of time, um,
- 7:31just even outside the
- 7:32seminars to learn all the
- 7:34material and be able to
- 7:35present well and learn
- 7:36their format and everything like that.
- 7:40So if you've ever been to an L1,
- 7:42there's lots of pieces to it, right?
- 7:45And someone different
- 7:47teaches each piece generally at an L1.
- 7:52And then there's a flow
- 7:53master who kind of keeps it all together.
- 7:55Mm-hmm.
- 7:57Is the eventual goal to be
- 7:58able to do all facets,
- 7:59including be a Flowmaster?
- 8:00Or are you just, hey, I'm here.
- 8:03I'm just getting in and
- 8:04learning what I can.
- 8:06And then we'll worry about
- 8:06those goals next year.
- 8:10No,
- 8:10the goal is always to go to the top of
- 8:12whatever I'm doing.
- 8:13So.
- 8:19So, yeah, no,
- 8:20I want to learn as much as I can.
- 8:22I want to, you know,
- 8:24get as much experience as I can.
- 8:25And it's definitely I don't
- 8:27think it happens quickly.
- 8:28You have to get a lot of
- 8:29seminars under your belt.
- 8:30It's like a very slow step
- 8:32by step process.
- 8:33But yes, that is the path we're on.
- 8:36And that's the long term
- 8:36goal is to be able to, you know,
- 8:38coach every piece of the L1
- 8:40and hopefully take a
- 8:42leadership role someday.
- 8:45That's that's and of course you will.
- 8:47Yeah.
- 8:50So I was watching something with Dave.
- 8:55He's done so much lately.
- 8:56It's hard to figure out which one it was.
- 9:00He mentions your name in
- 9:02something where he was like,
- 9:04I think he was on with
- 9:05Savan and he was talking about how,
- 9:08that he didn't know many of
- 9:11the athletes he interviewed,
- 9:12but there were some
- 9:13athletes he did because he
- 9:14uses them a lot for testing
- 9:16because they're close.
- 9:18And he mentioned your name.
- 9:20How lucky are you that you
- 9:23lived close enough to form
- 9:25that relationship with Dave
- 9:26and be his tester?
- 9:28And did that help you in
- 9:30gaining seminar staff status?
- 9:34Um, I, well, I'm so lucky.
- 9:37Yeah.
- 9:37Um, that was just an amazing, um, yeah,
- 9:43amazing, amazing, uh,
- 9:45opportunity to just be
- 9:47asked to come test and, um, you know,
- 9:51be Dave's punching bag for, you know,
- 9:54whenever he needed me.
- 9:56Um, and it's been super fun.
- 9:58It's always fun to go down
- 9:59to the ranch and be a part of that,
- 10:01you know,
- 10:01creative process that he goes
- 10:03through and creating a programming.
- 10:06I always think it's super
- 10:07fascinating to like watch
- 10:09his brain work and watch
- 10:10him put pieces together and, you know,
- 10:13make adjustments and, um,
- 10:16Yeah, and to play a role in, you know,
- 10:18giving feedback on how
- 10:19things felt or what my
- 10:21strategy was or what my approach was.
- 10:23And yeah,
- 10:26all of that is a super cool
- 10:28process to be on the other
- 10:29side of things.
- 10:30And I feel very,
- 10:31very lucky that I've had
- 10:32the opportunity to be part
- 10:33of that for the last several years.
- 10:37And I think that's a cool thing to even,
- 10:40you know, be a part of now.
- 10:42It's kind of like, well, hey,
- 10:43now that I'm not competing, you know,
- 10:44I got...
- 10:45no horse in the game in the
- 10:46individual field.
- 10:47So, you know,
- 10:50throw me in wherever you want.
- 10:51Yeah.
- 10:52And it says a lot about you
- 10:54because a tester isn't just
- 10:57doing the workout and
- 10:58they're observing and
- 10:59taking the time down.
- 11:00They want the feedback from
- 11:02you as to how it felt,
- 11:04what your strategy was, all those things.
- 11:08And that had to go a long
- 11:09way in helping you prepare
- 11:11for seminar staff.
- 11:14Yeah, I mean, in terms of seminar staff,
- 11:17I think it was,
- 11:18I don't think that I would
- 11:20say it helped me get on
- 11:22seminar staff in the sense that, like,
- 11:27it's a pretty rigorous process.
- 11:29Like, you have to, it's definitely not,
- 11:34you know,
- 11:35people who got good
- 11:36connections are in kind of game, you know,
- 11:39like you, like I took a lot of feedback,
- 11:41you know,
- 11:42no matter how much experience
- 11:43you have as a coach,
- 11:45even the people who have
- 11:46been on staff for a decade, you know,
- 11:49like that's part of the
- 11:50culture is you're like
- 11:51constantly taking lots of
- 11:52feedback and expected to be
- 11:56constantly improving.
- 11:57And so like a big part of it
- 12:00is them just figuring out, you know,
- 12:02if you're the right person, you know,
- 12:04if you're the right
- 12:06the person to fit in with that culture,
- 12:09you know, um,
- 12:11can you take a lot of feedback, you know,
- 12:13are you about the right
- 12:15things and are you, are you living,
- 12:17you know,
- 12:17the values that you're preaching?
- 12:19Um,
- 12:20but I do think it was really valuable
- 12:24in the sense that, um,
- 12:26being in Santa Cruz gives me access to,
- 12:29um,
- 12:30I've just known a lot of the OG
- 12:32CrossFitters, you know, I've, I've
- 12:35being around Santa Cruz has
- 12:37given me access to people
- 12:39like Annie Sakamoto and Pat
- 12:40Barber and Paulus.
- 12:43And, you know, like I just, there's,
- 12:46you know,
- 12:46seminar staff members that have been,
- 12:47you know,
- 12:49on seminar staff for decades or
- 12:50Flowmasters and have a lot
- 12:52of experience with that format.
- 12:55And so,
- 12:57the fortunate thing for me
- 12:59that I think really
- 13:00benefited me is just that I,
- 13:01I know those people and I
- 13:03was able to reach out and, you know, say,
- 13:06you know, Hey, can you help me?
- 13:07What should I do?
- 13:08You know, how should I prepare?
- 13:10Can I, can, can you watch me coach?
- 13:13You know, if I,
- 13:14if I show you what my plan is,
- 13:16can you give me some feedback?
- 13:18You know?
- 13:18And I, I really utilized that to,
- 13:24you know,
- 13:26I guess for guidance, for mentorship,
- 13:28you know, and,
- 13:29and I think that's
- 13:30definitely valuable if you're, you know,
- 13:33just being local and having
- 13:34those connections.
- 13:35Uh,
- 13:35Corey Leonard says Pat Barber's facial
- 13:37hair is fitter than I am.
- 13:39It's probably true for most people.
- 13:41It's pretty impressive.
- 13:43Yeah.
- 13:43Um, well, I think that's,
- 13:45that's really awesome.
- 13:47Um,
- 13:49I think that the, the,
- 13:51the sport and the
- 13:53methodology for lack of
- 13:54better term seminar staff,
- 13:57there was a time where so
- 13:58many of the athletes were
- 13:59on seminar staff and,
- 14:01and we've gotten away from that.
- 14:03And I think that the more we
- 14:05can make that connection.
- 14:06And I think some of the
- 14:07athletes are gravitating back to that.
- 14:09And I, and I love seeing that.
- 14:11Um, and so you jumping into that is,
- 14:13is just a cool, cool thing to happen.
- 14:17Yeah, I mean,
- 14:18when I was growing up in CrossFit, I mean,
- 14:22I was older when I started CrossFit,
- 14:23I guess.
- 14:24So I didn't grow up in
- 14:25CrossFit the way that the
- 14:26kids grow up now.
- 14:31But all of my idols,
- 14:34all of my CrossFit idols
- 14:36were on seminar staff.
- 14:37You know,
- 14:38they were athletes and they were
- 14:39incredible athletes.
- 14:40And they were also on seminar staff.
- 14:42And they were teaching, you know, this –
- 14:46methodology that I think was
- 14:48so new and revolutionary at the time.
- 14:50And, um,
- 14:53so that was a big influence on me.
- 14:55Yeah.
- 14:56So let's talk about your
- 14:57season a little bit, um,
- 15:01because of this and, and,
- 15:03and going through that
- 15:05journey of getting on the seminar staff,
- 15:06how important was the season,
- 15:08even in just the master's part?
- 15:15Um,
- 15:21how important was it like on
- 15:23the priority list?
- 15:25Oh, I see.
- 15:26Was it, was it top three?
- 15:29Was it top five?
- 15:30Yeah.
- 15:31Yeah.
- 15:33Um,
- 15:34it was maybe around your four position.
- 15:38Um, yeah, we, you know,
- 15:40like it was sort of, um,
- 15:42career and family time and then training.
- 15:48Um, and, and,
- 15:50you know,
- 15:51the career had kind of a couple
- 15:53of pieces to it, you know,
- 15:54between seminar staff and
- 15:56some of the programs that
- 15:56I've been working on, you know,
- 15:59and then I needed to sort
- 16:01of balance my life out and
- 16:02spend time with family and friends and,
- 16:05you know,
- 16:05work on taking care of my
- 16:09relationships that matter
- 16:10most to me in my life that, you know,
- 16:12definitely some of that
- 16:13stuff gets put on the back
- 16:14burner more than I would
- 16:16have liked when you're,
- 16:17competing at the level that
- 16:19I was competing at.
- 16:20And so it, um, yeah, I guess third ish.
- 16:26Okay.
- 16:26Yeah.
- 16:27So you go into, you go into quarters,
- 16:29you finish 10th in your age
- 16:30group and you go into semis,
- 16:33you finish 12th.
- 16:36I would say,
- 16:37I'd say you're a better in
- 16:38person competitor than you
- 16:39are an online competitor.
- 16:41For sure.
- 16:42I would say that too.
- 16:44So kind of,
- 16:48The weird thing and the cool
- 16:49thing for you is Masters
- 16:52finished in early May,
- 16:56maybe for semifinals.
- 16:58And then you have this long
- 17:01break until the games,
- 17:03until Labor Day weekend.
- 17:04Yeah.
- 17:05Yeah.
- 17:06Are you able,
- 17:07or do you have any desire to
- 17:09pick up the training as you
- 17:11get closer to the games and just say,
- 17:14okay, family time.
- 17:15I want to do that, but just for four weeks,
- 17:19six weeks, I can do this.
- 17:21Yeah.
- 17:22Yeah.
- 17:23Yeah.
- 17:24That was the plan.
- 17:25I did have a plan of like, all right,
- 17:29eight weeks before the games,
- 17:31we're going to do
- 17:33a slightly more intense training cycle.
- 17:35I can shift my schedule back to, you know,
- 17:39do get a little more
- 17:40training volume in and feel
- 17:43a little more prepared for
- 17:44the CrossFit Games.
- 17:47And it's not totally working
- 17:50out the way that I had planned.
- 17:52So I got sick, probably COVID,
- 17:59like week one.
- 18:01I was like, all right,
- 18:02week one of this eight week program.
- 18:04And I'm out.
- 18:05I was out for the whole week.
- 18:07Six or four.
- 18:08Yeah.
- 18:10So like, all right,
- 18:11this is a seven week cycle, you know?
- 18:14Um, and then, uh,
- 18:17literally yesterday we were like,
- 18:19all right, started rebuilding.
- 18:20You know,
- 18:20it took me maybe another week to
- 18:22get my lungs back after that.
- 18:24And, um, and started rebuilding and, uh,
- 18:27literally yesterday, um,
- 18:30Our dog, she needs a double knee surgery.
- 18:37We were really hoping that
- 18:39we could hold off on it
- 18:40till after the games.
- 18:43But she's got to do it now.
- 18:46So she's going in next week.
- 18:49And it's going to be an
- 18:51intense two weeks before the games.
- 18:56uh yeah so we'll see I mean
- 18:58I'm I'm doing what I can
- 19:00but we yeah we just
- 19:01launched our um fire
- 19:04pre-academy program that
- 19:05I've been working on I've
- 19:06got a seminar in a couple
- 19:07of weeks I'm coaching and
- 19:10my dog is getting surgery
- 19:12so those are just you know
- 19:14things that are more
- 19:14important on the list right
- 19:15now and uh I'm getting the
- 19:18training in where I can I'm trying to
- 19:21get as much volume in as I can and,
- 19:23and at least expose myself
- 19:25to some of the heavier,
- 19:27more unique things that
- 19:28show up at the games.
- 19:30Um, we'll see how it goes.
- 19:34So, wow.
- 19:37It's just, it's just,
- 19:42so your dog's name is Harley, right?
- 19:44Yes.
- 19:45And big dog.
- 19:48Yeah.
- 19:48She's a 85 pound pity mix.
- 19:55from pictures almost looks
- 19:56great Danish size,
- 19:59but maybe not that big.
- 20:00Not that big.
- 20:01Yeah.
- 20:02She's, she's more of like a, a thick girl,
- 20:05you know, a little stocky,
- 20:07maybe a little taller than
- 20:09your average pity.
- 20:10But, um, but yeah,
- 20:14you see who our sponsor is, right?
- 20:16That's right.
- 20:16Well, and we're, we're sponsored by thick.
- 20:20That's right.
- 20:20Uh-huh.
- 20:21Yeah.
- 20:21Yeah.
- 20:24So we need to get her some clothes from,
- 20:26from.
- 20:27Absolutely.
- 20:27She'll rock them.
- 20:29Yeah.
- 20:31So the recovery for that,
- 20:32I'm assuming is going to
- 20:34put a lot on you.
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:37Yeah.
- 20:38Wow.
- 20:41Double knee surgery.
- 20:42And yeah,
- 20:43and my husband just launched his
- 20:45apparel brand.
- 20:47So we're just doing a lot of things.
- 20:51We decided everything at
- 20:52once was the good strategy.
- 20:54Let's pick the busiest time in our lives.
- 20:57And that's all done in two months.
- 21:01That's right.
- 21:02Yeah.
- 21:03Yeah.
- 21:05And I saw Lance is launching
- 21:09the Barbells and Breakdowns.
- 21:11Barbells and Breakdowns.
- 21:13Apparel, which is so cool.
- 21:15I watch his videos on
- 21:17Instagram all the time.
- 21:18Do you?
- 21:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:21And I love that when games
- 21:23athletes jump in and send them back.
- 21:26Yeah.
- 21:27It's great.
- 21:27It's great stuff.
- 21:29Yeah.
- 21:29That's awesome.
- 21:31So...
- 21:34So with all that,
- 21:35what are your realistic
- 21:37goals for the games?
- 21:41Yeah,
- 21:43I actually just had this conversation
- 21:45with Hunter, my coach, because I was like,
- 21:49all right,
- 21:50I need some help with
- 21:51expectation management here because yeah,
- 21:56it's weird going in to the
- 21:59biggest competition of the year.
- 22:02feeling less prepared than I
- 22:03normally do um but that I
- 22:06think that was gonna feel
- 22:07like that anyway you know I
- 22:08put so much into
- 22:11preparation and training
- 22:12the last three years that
- 22:13anything less was gonna
- 22:14feel like being unprepared
- 22:15to me so um so it
- 22:18definitely is a weird
- 22:19mental thing to work around
- 22:20um but and I think that
- 22:25what has come out of it for me is that
- 22:30There's so many other things
- 22:31going on that are big
- 22:33priorities and I'm really
- 22:34focused on training and
- 22:36competing need to stay the
- 22:38fun part of my day on a daily basis.
- 22:42And that's sort of our.
- 22:46operating plan right now is
- 22:48you know I need to have fun
- 22:49with training I need to
- 22:50keep my body healthy you
- 22:52know I need to um I need to
- 22:56have fun at the games I
- 22:57need to enjoy the
- 22:57experience and soak it up
- 22:59and you know have a good
- 23:01time against a really
- 23:04impressive group of
- 23:05competitors you know and
- 23:07I'll test myself I'll push
- 23:08myself you know three two one go like
- 23:11you turn it on and, and hopefully I'll,
- 23:14you know,
- 23:15have what I need in me when it's
- 23:17time to go.
- 23:21But yeah, at the end of the day, it's,
- 23:25it's the fun part of my life right now.
- 23:27So we're just,
- 23:27we're going to go and enjoy
- 23:28the experience and compete
- 23:31as hard as we can see where
- 23:33that lands us.
- 23:37I'm going to try to phrase this the best I,
- 23:39so you were,
- 23:41You were epically known for
- 23:43just missing the games a
- 23:44couple years in a row.
- 23:45Yep.
- 23:49And in these iconic finishes
- 23:52where one point made the difference,
- 23:54right?
- 23:54Yep.
- 23:54A couple of times.
- 24:00Will anything you accomplish
- 24:02in Masters overtake that
- 24:06that you missed out then?
- 24:07Um...
- 24:10Yeah.
- 24:11I think that's, that's a hard question.
- 24:15You know,
- 24:15like I don't have the answer to that yet,
- 24:17I guess.
- 24:18There were some big moments, you know,
- 24:20but I, I think there's always,
- 24:25it's just different, you know?
- 24:26I think you're proud of different things.
- 24:29I guess,
- 24:29I guess like there were some
- 24:30really big moments when I
- 24:31was competing on the teams as well.
- 24:33You know,
- 24:34I was a team athlete for a really
- 24:35long time first and there were some,
- 24:39really incredible moments
- 24:41while I was competing on the team.
- 24:43And, you know,
- 24:45the teams don't get as much attention and,
- 24:47you know,
- 24:47we were competing in the weird
- 24:48sanctional year where
- 24:50everything was everywhere.
- 24:51And it was kind of hard to follow,
- 24:53but like,
- 24:55there were some really cool
- 24:56moments that I'm really proud of.
- 24:58And,
- 24:59and we're really special because you
- 25:02were with a team and you
- 25:04were so close and you'd
- 25:05been through so much together.
- 25:06And, you know,
- 25:07that was a shared experience
- 25:09that meant a lot to me.
- 25:12And so I,
- 25:15Those are big highs.
- 25:17And I've had some big highs
- 25:18on the individual field.
- 25:19I'm really proud of the work
- 25:21that I've done and what
- 25:22I've accomplished.
- 25:24And yes,
- 25:24there's all those bittersweet
- 25:26moments of just missing the target.
- 25:32But I think there's some
- 25:35moments in there that are
- 25:36just as big but different.
- 25:38And I don't know that I
- 25:40could stack one over the other.
- 25:44Because it's just such a
- 25:45different phase of life.
- 25:46It's such a different feel.
- 25:47And I think that maybe that
- 25:49will be the case in the
- 25:51master's division as well.
- 25:53You know,
- 25:56I expect that there's going to be
- 25:57big moments in my future in
- 26:00the master's division.
- 26:01I expect that there's going
- 26:02to be things that I'm really proud of.
- 26:04And maybe those will be special because
- 26:07I'm doing other things that
- 26:09are important to me in my
- 26:10life at the same time.
- 26:11You know, like I'm building my career.
- 26:13I'm spending time with my family.
- 26:15Eventually we want to have kids.
- 26:16You know,
- 26:16I'm going to do that and I'm
- 26:18going to compete.
- 26:19And, you know, it's going to be, I think,
- 26:22maybe a really fulfilling
- 26:23experience to be able to do
- 26:24that and compete and achieve success.
- 26:30things that I want on the
- 26:31competition floor as well.
- 26:32And, and I think that, you know,
- 26:34maybe those things will
- 26:35just feel like big
- 26:36accomplishments in a different way.
- 26:39Yeah.
- 26:41That makes,
- 26:42Yeah.
- 26:43I mean, when I had my daughter,
- 26:44like everything in
- 26:45perspective of everything changed.
- 26:47Yeah.
- 26:48Because you're then sharing it with, with,
- 26:51with, with something that,
- 26:53or someone that you never
- 26:54even imagined the love that
- 26:56you could have.
- 26:57Right.
- 26:58And so everything just became different.
- 27:02So I can see that totally.
- 27:04Yeah.
- 27:04And you're doing it for a
- 27:05different reason.
- 27:05You know, like you,
- 27:06everything has a different
- 27:07purpose behind it.
- 27:08Everything's all about like
- 27:10the example that you set
- 27:11for her and what you're
- 27:13showing her is possible.
- 27:14And like, that's,
- 27:17I think that's everything.
- 27:21So Corey says at three, two, one,
- 27:23she becomes Kelly, Kelly, Kelly.
- 27:25Yeah.
- 27:26We just add more Kelly's.
- 27:27That's right.
- 27:33And then Uplift What asks,
- 27:34what did you do when you
- 27:35found out your spouse's
- 27:36last name was Kelly?
- 27:40The first thing I did was I
- 27:42told him that he couldn't tell anyone.
- 27:50I definitely,
- 27:51I was on the team at that
- 27:53point and I was like,
- 27:54my teammates will never leave.
- 27:57He's like, I'll never hear the end of it.
- 27:59They will never let me live this down.
- 28:03You can't tell them.
- 28:07I'll be honest with you.
- 28:08So I,
- 28:09I met you as Kelly Clark and then you
- 28:13became Kelly Kelly.
- 28:14And I thought at first it was a joke.
- 28:16I thought you were just like
- 28:18doing a joke on Instagram
- 28:20that became your handle, whatever,
- 28:22whatever.
- 28:23And then it took me,
- 28:26midway through interviewing
- 28:27like a one-time interview
- 28:29it is kelly clark the next
- 28:30time it became kelly kelly
- 28:31and then it was it just was
- 28:33weird yeah it's just me
- 28:36trying to figure it out
- 28:37like what was reality and
- 28:38what was she joking was she
- 28:42and then I got it about this so
- 28:50It took me a little while to embrace it.
- 28:51At first, I was like,
- 28:52I don't know if I can do this.
- 28:57We might have to talk about
- 28:58different last names.
- 29:02But I don't know.
- 29:03The longer we went,
- 29:05the more I sat with it.
- 29:07It's kind of one of those
- 29:09things where you either
- 29:10have to cut it off and say, no,
- 29:12we're not doing that,
- 29:12or you just got to embrace
- 29:13it and run with it.
- 29:16And it's turned out to be really fun.
- 29:21Yeah.
- 29:22Yeah.
- 29:23I can just imagine going to
- 29:25like the DMV or whatever.
- 29:26And they're like, what's your first name?
- 29:28Kelly.
- 29:28What's your last name?
- 29:29Kelly.
- 29:30No, no.
- 29:30Your last name.
- 29:31Yep.
- 29:32Yeah.
- 29:32Every time.
- 29:33All paperwork.
- 29:34So confusing.
- 29:35Yeah.
- 29:37I want to finish up with
- 29:38just two fun questions or
- 29:40about things outside of the
- 29:42competition space.
- 29:43We talked a couple times ago
- 29:45about a program you started called K2.
- 29:48Mm-hmm.
- 29:49And at that time it was very
- 29:52much in the fire department
- 29:54and developing training to
- 29:56keep firemen fit for their jobs.
- 30:00Yep.
- 30:01It appears now that you've
- 30:03made this like a full
- 30:05remote programming that
- 30:07anybody can get into,
- 30:08or is it still like first
- 30:11responder specific?
- 30:14Well, so yeah,
- 30:14we have a few different branches.
- 30:17The remote program is
- 30:19something that anyone can get into.
- 30:21We started it for our firefighters,
- 30:26but we were beta testing it
- 30:27at the gym with classes at the gym.
- 30:31And it ended up going so
- 30:33well that it's just expanded.
- 30:34We've had to add more and
- 30:35more classes at the gym.
- 30:38And
- 30:39It's been really great for
- 30:42our older population of athletes.
- 30:44It's been great for the gym
- 30:46is owned by a physical therapy clinic.
- 30:48And so it's been great for
- 30:50people who are kind of
- 30:51graduating from physical
- 30:52therapy and returning to activity.
- 30:55Maybe they still have some
- 30:55limitations and some rehab
- 30:57they have to work through.
- 30:59And so it's been really great for that.
- 31:01And then
- 31:04uh, yeah, so we,
- 31:05we put it out and available.
- 31:08The individual program is
- 31:09available remotely for
- 31:10anyone that wants to use it.
- 31:12Um,
- 31:13and then the fire program has expanded.
- 31:16It's the ongoing program.
- 31:18We work with, uh, local fire department,
- 31:21Santa Cruz fire here as an
- 31:24ongoing live program.
- 31:26So we give them programming
- 31:29on a weekly basis, uh, that they do,
- 31:32they can do five days a week.
- 31:33And,
- 31:35Then we're just starting to branch out.
- 31:38We're working with Pasadena
- 31:40Fire now to do a lot of
- 31:44injury risk assessments and
- 31:47movement assessments.
- 31:50And then we've written a
- 31:52pre-academy preparation
- 31:54program that just launched yesterday.
- 31:57Um, so we're taking their, again,
- 31:59you had to fit everything into two.
- 32:01Everything had to be right
- 32:02at the same time.
- 32:03Um, yeah,
- 32:06so it's a 10 week program that
- 32:08their recruits for the fire
- 32:10Academy are going through
- 32:11to prepare them for the fire Academy.
- 32:15So we went down to Pasadena
- 32:16for a couple of days.
- 32:16We did a whole lot of testing, um,
- 32:19all the movement screens
- 32:20and injury risk assessments.
- 32:22And, um,
- 32:24based on that,
- 32:25they get a corrective
- 32:26exercise program and then
- 32:27they get put through this
- 32:2810 week remote program.
- 32:30Um, and they get access to us as coaches.
- 32:33They get to, you know, con, you know,
- 32:34talk to me and send me,
- 32:35I'll send them feedback.
- 32:36They send me videos.
- 32:37We, you know,
- 32:38track their progress and all
- 32:40of that stuff.
- 32:41Um,
- 32:42and the goal is that they are fit
- 32:46enough to make it through
- 32:48the academy and,
- 32:50as bulletproof as we can
- 32:52make them so that they
- 32:53don't get injured during the academy.
- 32:55And then the bigger goal is
- 32:57to give them the tools that
- 32:59they need to make sure they
- 33:01know how to train appropriately,
- 33:03they know how to take care of
- 33:04any issues or flare-ups that
- 33:06might come up.
- 33:07They know how to rehab their body.
- 33:09They know how to recover
- 33:10properly from both the
- 33:12physical and the mental
- 33:12stress of Academy.
- 33:13And we really want to like
- 33:16provide them the tools that they need,
- 33:18not just for the Academy,
- 33:19but then setting themselves
- 33:20up for a successful career.
- 33:23Yeah, it was a very innovative program.
- 33:26And yeah,
- 33:28If I remember correctly,
- 33:30and please correct me if I'm wrong,
- 33:31it's a lot about like
- 33:32listening to your body and
- 33:33giving you alternatives.
- 33:36If you have those nicks or
- 33:38aches in a place that you
- 33:40can kind of avoid that or
- 33:42rehab that as opposed to
- 33:44just doing the class
- 33:45workout that's written as on the board.
- 33:48Yes.
- 33:48Yeah.
- 33:49Big part of the K2 program
- 33:51is its emphasis on recovery work,
- 33:54but using movement as a recovery tool.
- 33:56So you still get your
- 33:57movement practice and
- 33:58you're still taking care of
- 34:00your body and making
- 34:02forward progress with your fitness.
- 34:04But making sure that, you know,
- 34:07we're doing like a low
- 34:09intensity flush that we're
- 34:12reestablishing good
- 34:13movement quality and activation patterns.
- 34:15There's a lot of like very
- 34:17PT,
- 34:18prehab influence into our recovery flows.
- 34:20But yeah, it requires that, you know,
- 34:23that you learn your body and you learn,
- 34:25you know,
- 34:25when you need to prioritize
- 34:28recovery and when you need, you know,
- 34:30when you're able to go hard.
- 34:32And then, you know,
- 34:33we give you the tools that
- 34:35you need to decide which
- 34:37one's best for you.
- 34:39Yeah, it was so super cool.
- 34:41And I'm glad that it's
- 34:42expanded and it's doing so well.
- 34:44And if people are interested,
- 34:45they can just reach out to
- 34:46you on Instagram or... Yeah,
- 34:48on Instagram.
- 34:50K2 Performance has an Instagram account.
- 34:53The programming is on StreamFit.
- 34:56So it's available there.
- 34:57And yeah,
- 35:01probably the best way is to reach me.
- 35:03Back to your name.
- 35:04You actually can't fill out
- 35:05paperwork wrongly.
- 35:08You know how many times I've
- 35:09put my last name in the
- 35:10first name column and vice
- 35:12versa and then had to get
- 35:13the white out out or whatever.
- 35:15Um,
- 35:16although the problem is that they
- 35:20always hand it back to me.
- 35:21They're like, excuse me,
- 35:22you did this wrong.
- 35:23Yeah.
- 35:29So my last question is,
- 35:31you're a Misfit athlete.
- 35:33They always do an amazing
- 35:34job with shirts for you
- 35:36guys every year that are
- 35:39individualized for each one of you.
- 35:41And I just wanted to ask why
- 35:44your shirt has the stuff it has.
- 35:46So I'm going to pull it up
- 35:48so everybody can see it.
- 35:51And this is your game shirt.
- 35:55Yeah.
- 35:57So the wolf in its pack, uh,
- 36:00beauty and strength and
- 36:03first and last name Kelly
- 36:05and a second Kelly.
- 36:07That's right.
- 36:08Yeah.
- 36:09Um, yeah, the, the wolf, um,
- 36:12has always been, you know, I,
- 36:14I have my roots in, in team competition,
- 36:16uh, as a team player.
- 36:18And so, um,
- 36:21you know,
- 36:22that Rudyard Kipling quote has
- 36:24always really resonated with me.
- 36:27And even on the individual field,
- 36:29I think that a big strength
- 36:30of mine has been the
- 36:31support team around me and
- 36:33the community that is behind me.
- 36:35And so, um,
- 36:37that's something that always
- 36:38means a lot to me.
- 36:39Uh, and so I kind of just see the wolf as,
- 36:43you know, a pack animal and, um,
- 36:49Yeah, and then, yeah, flowers, you know,
- 36:52being strong and fierce,
- 36:56but also beautiful and graceful.
- 36:58I kind of see that in the wolf as well,
- 37:01that the flowers kind of bring that,
- 37:03you know, feel to it as well.
- 37:07And then that little Celtic symbol there.
- 37:13is the Celtic symbol for inner strength.
- 37:16Kelly is a Celtic name at its roots.
- 37:20And I think that a big part
- 37:25of my journey has been
- 37:28working on myself and
- 37:29working on the internal
- 37:31strength that it takes to
- 37:33compete and to succeed.
- 37:34And so that's been an
- 37:37important part of my growth in the sport.
- 37:42That's really cool.
- 37:43And then are those colors
- 37:45picked by Misfit or you?
- 37:48You know what?
- 37:54I think Ted, who is the designer at Misfit,
- 37:57I think he threw those
- 37:58colors out first and I went, yes,
- 38:01absolutely.
- 38:05Team effort for all.
- 38:07Yeah.
- 38:08He knew what I liked.
- 38:10Well,
- 38:11my last question about Misfit is
- 38:15they're sending Paige to the games.
- 38:17I know they have a lot of
- 38:18Masters athletes too.
- 38:21Do you find yourself rooting
- 38:22for fellow Misfit athletes
- 38:24when they're on the floor?
- 38:25Oh, yeah.
- 38:26Okay.
- 38:27So it's like a team concept to you.
- 38:29Yeah.
- 38:30Yeah, for sure.
- 38:32I think that's another reason that I –
- 38:35like Misfit is that they,
- 38:38they kind of foster that
- 38:39team environment and that feel.
- 38:42And I really like that.
- 38:44Thoughts on Dave putting out
- 38:45that there's going to be a
- 38:46training camp winner from the games.
- 38:51I know that sounds really cool.
- 38:53Well,
- 38:53Misfit will definitely have the
- 38:54coolest athletes out there.
- 38:55Yeah.
- 38:57That's one of the judging criteria,
- 38:59but it should be.
- 39:02Yeah.
- 39:04Um, well, I want to thank you, Kelly,
- 39:06for taking out some time as always.
- 39:09Super fun talking to you.
- 39:10Um, we're going to be in Birmingham.
- 39:13Sweet.
- 39:14We are doing a full,
- 39:15we got access to do a full
- 39:17behind the scenes.
- 39:18All right.
- 39:20So Vaughn does with the regular games.
- 39:22We are doing that for the
- 39:23masters athletes.
- 39:25Super cool.
- 39:27So we want to do that so
- 39:28that you guys have
- 39:29something featuring you
- 39:31guys and all that you've
- 39:32accomplished behind the
- 39:34scenes and getting to know
- 39:35all of you better.
- 39:36And this is the first step
- 39:37in that is interviewing as
- 39:38many of you as we can.
- 39:41That's amazing.
- 39:41This is super cool.
- 39:43I always love talking to you, Scott.
- 39:45Yeah.
- 39:45So we will see you in Birmingham.
- 39:47Can't wait.
- 39:48And I can't wait to see you
- 39:49crush it on the floor.
- 39:50Yeah.
- 39:51Last question.
- 39:52With all this other stuff
- 39:53going on in your life and less training,
- 39:55does your body feel better
- 39:56than it has in the past?
- 39:58My body does feel better.
- 39:59Yeah, my body feels great.
- 40:01There's a silver lining to all this.
- 40:03It's true.
- 40:04It's nice to go into
- 40:05competition being like, hey, I feel good.
- 40:08Yeah, yeah.
- 40:10Well, with that then,
- 40:10maybe that's what you need this year.
- 40:13Maybe it is.
- 40:15All right.
- 40:15We'll see you in Birmingham.
- 40:16Thank you so much, Kelly.
- 40:17Thank you to everybody in
- 40:18the chat for being here.
- 40:19You guys make the show what it is.
- 40:21And we will see everybody
- 40:23next time on the Clydesdale
- 40:24Media Podcast.
- 40:26Bye, guys.
