Latest / Foul Territory / Todd Frazier joins Tim Kurkjian's “Is This A Great Game, Or What?”
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Is this a great game or what?
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm with my son, Jeff Kirkjian, and our special guest
- 0:12Speaker 2: today is my teammate at ESPN, former major leaguer, Todd Frazier,
- 0:19Speaker 2: the Todd father.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Todd, say hi to Jeff again. What's up? What's up?
- 0:26Speaker 1: All right, Todd, we're going to... We're going to start
- 0:31Speaker 1: with something that I think you're going to like.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Right behind you, you have a picture of yourself wearing
- 0:37Speaker 2: what number, Todd?
- 0:40Speaker 3: That's number 21 right there, Tim. Right.
- 0:43Speaker 2: So on today's pod, Todd, the one we taped yesterday,
- 0:49Speaker 2: since it's Roberto Clemente Day, I did the greatest players
- 0:52Speaker 2: at each position to wear number 21 because that's what
- 0:58Speaker 2: Clemente wore. So our third baseman was Todd Frazier, number 21.
- 1:05Speaker 1: How about that?
- 1:07Speaker 3: I must have been the only one because there was
- 1:10Speaker 3: a lot more, a lot better third baseman than I was.
- 1:13Speaker 3: But guess what? I will take that honor and I'm
- 1:16Speaker 3: going to run with it. So I appreciate that, Tim.
- 1:19Speaker 3: You're always putting a smile on my face. Yes.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I want you to put a smile on my face, Todd.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Before we get to the unimportant stuff, I want you
- 1:28Speaker 2: to help me with this, okay? Michael Jordan fouls a
- 1:32Speaker 2: guy on the way to the basket, and it's a
- 1:35Speaker 2: two-shot foul. I just want you, the referee, to call
- 1:40Speaker 2: that play. It's a hack, whatever you want to call it.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Guy's going to shoot to Michael Jordan, number 23 on
- 1:46Speaker 2: the foul.
- 1:47Speaker 1: I want to see Todd Frazier, the NBA referee, call
- 1:51Speaker 1: that play.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So it's here. We're looking. We got the arm cocked.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Here! Two, one.
- 2:01Speaker 3: Here, we got two shots whole. Come on. That's all.
- 2:07Speaker 3: That's it. Now we can have some fun.
- 2:10Speaker 4: It's amazing, Todd. It never gets old for us. Kirkjens
- 2:13Speaker 4: to see you doing the basketball rep.
- 2:16Speaker 2: I'm not sure why I love, look, you have to
- 2:19Speaker 2: repeat that the day that you got forced into being
- 2:23Speaker 2: a referee, because there was some old guy that couldn't
- 2:25Speaker 2: run up and down the court. Just please tell us
- 2:28Speaker 2: one more time when they called you in and what happened, please.
- 2:33Speaker 1: One more time, Todd.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Listen, I, I'm always a man of the people. I
- 2:39Speaker 3: got to help anybody I can. So, oh, man, he's
- 2:42Speaker 3: done for the day. I have to come in and
- 2:45Speaker 3: be that guy, dude. I'm 10 seconds here. If you're
- 2:48Speaker 3: not getting over the line, I'm counting them out. Like,
- 2:51Speaker 3: I took the– Tim, you know me. I took it
- 2:54Speaker 3: as serious as possible, man. I'm getting yelled left and
- 2:57Speaker 3: right at each other. I'm making calls left and right.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I'm telling you, if there was a scout there, Tim–
- 3:03Speaker 3: I wouldn't have been a professional baseball player. I would
- 3:05Speaker 3: be NBA and refereeing in the NBA right now. My
- 3:09Speaker 3: antics were here. It's windshield wipers. So yes, listen, there's
- 3:18Speaker 3: stories on stories of me refereeing. A lot of the
- 3:21Speaker 3: guys still hit me up today asking for referee video.
- 3:24Speaker 3: You know, Mike Monaco, our good buddy.
- 3:26Speaker 4: We just had him on the pot. He did a
- 3:28Speaker 4: great impression of you.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Oh, him and Chris Barker texted me every like other month, Todd,
- 3:34Speaker 3: I need a charge call. So I'll get my son
- 3:38Speaker 3: to videotape me. And I'm, I'm running up and down
- 3:41Speaker 3: the halls going here, here, here. So, you know, it's,
- 3:47Speaker 3: it's a miracle that I made it this long playing
- 3:50Speaker 3: professional baseball. I can, I can be a rep.
- 3:53Speaker 4: I don't want to be forward and dad, I don't
- 3:55Speaker 4: want to make you uncomfortable, but you know, at my
- 3:59Speaker 4: dad's funeral, Todd, I, I want you to come and
- 4:02Speaker 4: tell us where he is. So I just want you
- 4:05Speaker 4: to say, Tim Kirkson, he's here.
- 4:07Speaker 1: He's up there.
- 4:09Speaker 4: That's where he's at.
- 4:10Speaker 3: You got to go Spidey's. He's here. What's Spidey's here? Spidey's.
- 4:15Speaker 4: There.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Everybody in the funeral home will be like, Todd, get out.
- 4:21Speaker 3: And you will be laughing your butt off. Oh, my God.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Everybody would love it because that's what my dad would want.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Todd.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You would be a great NBA referee. You would also
- 4:33Speaker 2: be a great major league umpire. So let's see your
- 4:38Speaker 2: classic strike one, your classic.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Strike two, and your strike three.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Emphatic strike three on, let's say, a looking call third strike.
- 4:50Speaker 3: All right, well, I'm already in position, man. You got
- 4:52Speaker 3: me all fired up here. So, boom, first of all,
- 4:56Speaker 3: mask on right here. Boom, pitch, bring it. Settle.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Ha!
- 5:03Speaker 3: One. Hey! Two. You show them.
- 5:09Speaker 1: And that.
- 5:11Speaker 2: He.
- 5:13Speaker 1: He.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Like that. So, it changes. It changes monthly, Tim. You
- 5:20Speaker 3: know it. You've probably seen 30 of them already.
- 5:23Speaker 4: Yeah, my co-host on the radio, he always asks me, Jeff,
- 5:26Speaker 4: let's see how you would have punched that guy out.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Or let's see strike two. And I said, well, was
- 5:30Speaker 4: strike one looking? Because I'll change my call. If strike
- 5:34Speaker 4: one was looking, and he goes, well, let me hear
- 5:35Speaker 4: strike one. And I said, well, did he just punch
- 5:37Speaker 4: a guy out? Because if he just punched a guy out,
- 5:39Speaker 4: my strike one looking is not punch out level, but
- 5:43Speaker 4: it's aggressive. Because you just had a strike out looking,
- 5:47Speaker 4: and you fire gas again looking. I'm like, guys, come on.
- 5:51Speaker 4: You got to swing.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:54Speaker 4: I miss those days.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Listen, it's your time too as an umpire. Like, listen,
- 6:00Speaker 3: I want to make sure that people at home can
- 6:01Speaker 3: hear the call. You know, I mean, Jim Joyce, Steve Wright,
- 6:06Speaker 3: like that was his famous strike call. Like that's something
- 6:09Speaker 3: that you got it. I'm telling you, 99% of these
- 6:12Speaker 3: umpires are looking in the mirror and doing what I did. Like, ah,
- 6:15Speaker 3: is that the right call? Or is this, you know
- 6:18Speaker 3: what I mean? And they're telling their significant others, like,
- 6:21Speaker 3: watch me real quick. Like, How does that look? I'm
- 6:23Speaker 3: telling you right now, they must have done it a
- 6:26Speaker 3: bunch of times.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Yeah, they're shopping in Old Navy with their wife, and
- 6:29Speaker 4: they're in the women's section going, I don't know. Honey,
- 6:32Speaker 4: it's like when we do our golf swing out in public,
- 6:34Speaker 4: they're doing their strike call. What do we think about this?
- 6:38Speaker 3: Or if it's your father at the grocery store looking
- 6:40Speaker 3: at the Cheerios, should I get two for two, or
- 6:43Speaker 3: should I get one for one? No, we'll go two
- 6:47Speaker 3: for two with a slight lean to the right.
- 6:48Speaker 1: All right.
- 6:56Speaker 2: What is wrong with you that you still love to
- 6:58Speaker 2: do this?
- 6:59Speaker 1: And more important, what is wrong with me?
- 7:01Speaker 2: I'm almost 70 years old and stupid stuff like.
- 7:04Speaker 1: This makes me laugh so hard. Is this just the
- 7:07Speaker 1: way baseball is? Is this just what sports is supposed
- 7:11Speaker 1: to be all about? Charge blocks, strike one, strike three.
- 7:17Speaker 3: If we didn't have sports, Tim, I don't know where
- 7:19Speaker 3: we would be in life. I gotta be honest with you. Um,
- 7:23Speaker 3: it brings out the craziness in people. It brings out
- 7:25Speaker 3: the fun in people. Look, I mean, you talk about stories.
- 7:29Speaker 3: You have story for every, I can name a color
- 7:32Speaker 3: right now, blue. And you'd be like, oh, vital blue.
- 7:34Speaker 3: Let me tell you something. You know what I mean?
- 7:36Speaker 3: Like you can, I can talk, I can give you
- 7:39Speaker 3: a word. Like if you said Todd, give me a
- 7:41Speaker 3: random word. I can say, you know, chameleon. You'd be like,
- 7:44Speaker 3: oh my God, this guy tripped over a chameleon back
- 7:47Speaker 3: in 1965. And you would know exactly who it was,
- 7:51Speaker 3: what team he played for. And what day it was
- 7:54Speaker 3: and if the sun was out or not. You're that
- 7:56Speaker 3: good of a person. Sports is so integral in life,
- 7:59Speaker 3: in my opinion, because it brings out the best in everybody.
- 8:02Speaker 4: And when you talk about Tim Kirkson, Todd, I don't know.
- 8:08Speaker 4: It's a notebook thing for him. I mean, he writes
- 8:10Speaker 4: all of this down. And don't write on the back pages.
- 8:14Speaker 4: That's for darn sure. Fronts only.
- 8:16Speaker 3: No, no, no. You don't write on the back of
- 8:21Speaker 3: a notebook.
- 8:23Speaker 1: That's the problem.
- 8:26Speaker 3: See, I don't want to waste. I'm trying not to
- 8:28Speaker 3: waste as much paper. That's not what a professional does.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Not what a professional does.
- 8:37Speaker 3: We're going to bury him with a couple of notebooks
- 8:39Speaker 3: when he passes away. So he's going to need a
- 8:41Speaker 3: couple to write down what he sees.
- 8:42Speaker 1: No doubt.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Even on that day, he's going to have a to-do
- 8:45Speaker 4: list that he wants to cross off. Okay. Close casket.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Cross it off.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Jeff, I did foul territory with these knuckleheads the other day,
- 8:57Speaker 2: and Todd imitated me. It's the worst impersonation ever, but.
- 9:01Speaker 1: It sounds a lot like me, which just shows you
- 9:04Speaker 1: I have the worst voice ever. But this is what happened.
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yes.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Go, Todd.
- 9:11Speaker 3: It's only when you get excited or when you get high-pitched.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I can't talk to you normally, but when you get
- 9:16Speaker 3: excited over things, you go, get up here. I don't
- 9:19Speaker 3: know why it goes up there, but it does. And
- 9:22Speaker 3: your chin goes up, and that big old snozz of
- 9:25Speaker 3: yours looks right ahead. Oh, man. Look at that bad boy. Jesus.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Todd, look at this. When I go like this, it
- 9:33Speaker 1: looks like a two-car garage. It's terrible. I wish I
- 9:36Speaker 1: had a different nose.
- 9:40Speaker 3: Oh, man. I love every second, Tim. We're never going
- 9:44Speaker 3: to get through this show. It's fantastic.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:47Speaker 2: So, Jeff, Todd challenged me on foul territory the other
- 9:52Speaker 2: day to come up with a Team Tim for the
- 9:57Speaker 2: all baseball team. each position from cities in New Jersey.
- 10:03Speaker 2: That's what Todd Frazier asked me to do. And a
- 10:07Speaker 2: nearly 70 year old man went right to work on
- 10:10Speaker 2: this because I was challenged. It's like throwing a fastball
- 10:14Speaker 2: by Todd Frazier. He can't allow this to happen again.
- 10:17Speaker 2: So I came up with a team. Now, Todd, you
- 10:20Speaker 2: got to remember, I'm an expert at these things. So
- 10:23Speaker 2: Todd suggests that he's got two guys. Since he's from
- 10:28Speaker 2: Tom's River, he's got two guys. Tom Seaver and Mickey
- 10:32Speaker 2: Rivers have to be on the team. So I had
- 10:36Speaker 2: to do my own team, Todd.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And if I offend you with this, I'm sorry. We're
- 10:41Speaker 1: going to start. And help me here. We're going to
- 10:44Speaker 1: start with our pitching staff.
- 10:46Speaker 2: And our first pitcher is Tommy Toms, T-O-M-S, who pitched
- 10:51Speaker 2: for two years with the Giants in the mid-70s. And
- 10:54Speaker 2: our second pitcher is River Ryan. So our first two
- 10:59Speaker 2: pitchers make up Toms River.
- 11:04Speaker 1: I did that just for you. It took forever, but
- 11:07Speaker 1: I found it.
- 11:09Speaker 3: I cannot believe that. That's incredible. That's a great start, Ted.
- 11:13Speaker 3: All right.
- 11:14Speaker 2: I'm going to run through the rest. And, again, these
- 11:17Speaker 2: are cities and townships, Todd, okay? So not all of
- 11:21Speaker 2: them are cities, but I did the best I could here, okay?
- 11:25Speaker 1: We had Ryan Franklin. I think that's a township. We
- 11:29Speaker 1: had Madison Bumgarner.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Our catcher, I love this, Bob Kearney, Kearney City in
- 11:36Speaker 2: New Jersey.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Yes.
- 11:38Speaker 2: There was actually a first baseman. He didn't play very long.
- 11:41Speaker 2: His name was Trenton Brooks.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Who knew? I forgot about Trenton Brooks. But I found him.
- 11:48Speaker 2: There was a guy who played in the minor leagues
- 11:50Speaker 2: named Newark, but I couldn't use him because.
- 11:53Speaker 1: He didn't play in the big leagues. So that's pitcher
- 11:56Speaker 1: through first base. How am I doing so far? Have
- 11:59Speaker 1: I upset you or am I okay?
- 12:02Speaker 3: No, you're spot on, brother. The only one I'll give you,
- 12:07Speaker 3: it's called You said Kearney, so the township is called Kearney.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Does that make a difference or not?
- 12:14Speaker 1: No, no, no, Todd. You have to correct me on
- 12:18Speaker 1: these things.
- 12:19Speaker 2: If I'm going to go Tommy Toms and River Rhine,
- 12:23Speaker 2: we have to get this properly correct. Okay, so David
- 12:27Speaker 2: Hamilton is our second baseman.
- 12:29Speaker 1: UL Washington is shortstop. Roy Howell is our third baseman.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Corey Patterson, like the third biggest city in New Jersey.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Corey Patterson, Reggie Jackson, Craig Monroe, and our DH, even
- 12:47Speaker 2: though he should be an outfielder, is A.J.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Ewing.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Those are all cities or townships in New Jersey. That's
- 12:55Speaker 2: what I did in my spare time, Todd.
- 12:58Speaker 3: I got to be honest with you. Putting Reggie Jackson
- 13:02Speaker 3: is two towns above me. That is phenomenal. Oh, my God.
- 13:07Speaker 3: How the heck in God's creation did you figure that out?
- 13:10Speaker 3: That's a really good township team. I'll take that every day.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Okay, well, I did that.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I'll be the head coach. I'll be the choir coach.
- 13:23Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Now, Jeff, now that I'm in Todd's good graces, I'm
- 13:27Speaker 2: going to lose him here. I did a show the
- 13:29Speaker 2: other day. It was like a trivia-based podcast. And we
- 13:34Speaker 2: had to name the last player for each franchise to
- 13:39Speaker 2: hit 40 homers in a season. And I must say,
- 13:42Speaker 2: I did pretty well on this. I got almost every
- 13:46Speaker 2: question right. I might have gotten them all right, except
- 13:49Speaker 2: for this one. Who was the last Chicago White Sox
- 13:53Speaker 2: to hit 40 homers in a season? I even got
- 13:56Speaker 2: a clue, and I couldn't get the answer, Jeff. Todd Frazier.
- 14:01Speaker 1: In 2016. Todd, I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I made a mistake.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I couldn't remember that you had hit 40 for the
- 14:11Speaker 1: White Sox. Are you still talking to me?
- 14:14Speaker 3: I am. I am. What was the clue? What'd they say?
- 14:17Speaker 3: Do you remember?
- 14:17Speaker 2: The clue was he didn't play for the White Sox
- 14:21Speaker 2: for very long, and he was much more well-known as
- 14:24Speaker 2: a National League player.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And I tried, and I tried.
- 14:28Speaker 4: That is hard.
- 14:30Speaker 3: So.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Jeff, this is what I live for. This is what
- 14:33Speaker 2: I'm born for. This is the only thing in the
- 14:35Speaker 2: world I'm any good at. And I miss Todd Frazier,
- 14:39Speaker 2: who is.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Our guest on the show.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Terrible.
- 14:42Speaker 4: This is why he doesn't do Immaculate Grid, because he
- 14:45Speaker 4: thinks if he doesn't get the most rare score of
- 14:48Speaker 4: anybody on the Internet, he's going to be ostracized from
- 14:51Speaker 4: this community. So he says, that's work to me. He
- 14:54Speaker 4: loves Wordle.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Wordle's great.
- 14:57Speaker 4: Don't you do all the other ones too, Dad? What
- 14:59Speaker 4: else do you do?
- 15:00Speaker 1: You do the waffle?
- 15:02Speaker 2: I do waffle, I do Wordle, and I do the
- 15:05Speaker 2: spelling bee thing, and that's all I do. Because like
- 15:08Speaker 2: I said, if I get an immaculate grid wrong, I
- 15:11Speaker 2: would just kill myself because this is the only thing
- 15:13Speaker 2: I'm any good at.
- 15:14Speaker 1: And if I get one of those.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Wrong, it would be like Todd playing in a high
- 15:18Speaker 2: school game and striking out three times, which would never happen.
- 15:23Speaker 3: So that was funny. In the White Sox, they had
- 15:27Speaker 3: a guy. He just played on the Mets. I think
- 15:30Speaker 3: they released him. He had 39 home runs and almost
- 15:32Speaker 3: got to 40. He didn't get it. Who's the guy
- 15:34Speaker 3: that got traded to the Mets?
- 15:37Speaker 1: He's an outfield. Luis Robert? Luis Robert.
- 15:39Speaker 3: Yes. He got 39. He didn't get to 40. And
- 15:42Speaker 3: I was like, All right, I still got one thing
- 15:45Speaker 3: going for me. So I was happy about that. I'll
- 15:47Speaker 3: be honest with you. I want to keep that 40
- 15:50Speaker 3: and move on from there. Right.
- 15:51Speaker 2: Now, Todd, Murakami's got a shot at 40. He's going
- 15:55Speaker 2: to have to get awfully hot.
- 15:57Speaker 3: He's going to get it.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Colson Montgomery, he might hit 40 also. You might be
- 16:02Speaker 2: surpassed on the White Sox list, right?
- 16:06Speaker 3: I talked to the teams that they're playing. We're going
- 16:08Speaker 3: to go four-pitch walk here. We're going to go four pitches.
- 16:11Speaker 3: We're going to send them to first. And what position
- 16:17Speaker 3: does not Murakami, the other guy, play?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Colson Montgomery is a shortstop, and he's as big as you.
- 16:25Speaker 2: He's as big as you, Todd, and he's a shortstop.
- 16:28Speaker 2: He's a big kid, and he's got great power. He's
- 16:32Speaker 2: also got 200 strikeouts.
- 16:35Speaker 3: Third base. I'll keep the third base mark. I beat
- 16:37Speaker 3: Robin Ventura out. So that's a good name to remember, too.
- 16:41Speaker 3: All right.
- 16:45Speaker 4: We're a couple weeks out now from... the little league
- 16:49Speaker 4: world series, but we had Carl Ravitch on and we
- 16:52Speaker 4: talked to him a little bit, obviously about his incredible
- 16:55Speaker 4: career in Williamsport. And we've already done, we've already done
- 16:58Speaker 4: the sappy and the sad, so to speak, but I
- 17:00Speaker 4: want to hear from you years working with him. What
- 17:03Speaker 4: is your most hilarious Carl Ravitch Williamsport story? And there's
- 17:08Speaker 4: a million. That's the problem with Williamsport is there isn't
- 17:11Speaker 4: just one memory, right? There's a million that happened with
- 17:14Speaker 4: these kids in that place. It's so magical. So is
- 17:16Speaker 4: there one story, Crazy story with Carl that you can recall.
- 17:21Speaker 3: Well, I mean, listen, I was blessed enough to play,
- 17:25Speaker 3: to broadcast with him for five straight years. And it
- 17:29Speaker 3: was emotional. I know you talk about afterwards, you know,
- 17:32Speaker 3: I teared up a little bit. I gave him a
- 17:34Speaker 3: big hug, said, thank you. You know, Tim knows just
- 17:39Speaker 3: like I do how not he's professional, but when you
- 17:42Speaker 3: get him outside of his realm, He's one of the
- 17:45Speaker 3: funniest human beings you'll ever be around in your life. Just, like,
- 17:51Speaker 3: we'll be talking, Jeffrey. We'll be talking and, you know,
- 17:55Speaker 3: we'll say a word and Tim and I are around
- 17:58Speaker 3: and then, like, say a name. Like, oh, you know,
- 18:00Speaker 3: Johnny did this. And he's like, Johnny Appleseed? Johnny Bench? Like,
- 18:05Speaker 3: and we just go back and forth on names with Johnny.
- 18:08Speaker 3: And then he'll give... And then all of a sudden
- 18:11Speaker 3: we'll be like, oh, pasta. And he's like, pasta, you know, rigatoni.
- 18:16Speaker 3: And Tim understands fully. And we just go back and
- 18:20Speaker 3: forth on naming things that have the other word in it.
- 18:24Speaker 3: And all of a sudden we just bust out laughing
- 18:27Speaker 3: and Mendoza's in the middle. Like what is wrong with
- 18:30Speaker 3: you guys here? So yeah, I'll give you a good story.
- 18:36Speaker 3: This year it happened. He, He forgot his keys. Yeah,
- 18:41Speaker 3: he couldn't find his keys in his car. It was
- 18:43Speaker 3: like 9.30, 10 o'clock at night, so I'm waiting there
- 18:46Speaker 3: for him. We're trying to open up this car for
- 18:49Speaker 3: about 20 minutes. Lo and behold, it was the car
- 18:52Speaker 3: next to it. There were two rental cars, and we're
- 18:55Speaker 3: trying to open the wrong rental car up. And he's like, oh.
- 19:00Speaker 3: He's like, Frazier, I think it's this car. I said,
- 19:03Speaker 3: please don't. He dumps out. He had everything in his
- 19:06Speaker 3: backpack dumped out. We couldn't find anything. And, you know,
- 19:10Speaker 3: he talked about that. And I said, man, this is
- 19:13Speaker 3: a good way to go out for you. And ESPN,
- 19:15Speaker 3: we started laughing. Just a good human being.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:20Speaker 2: So Jeff, I've received a lot of really personal gifts
- 19:23Speaker 2: in my life as a baseball writer for 46 years,
- 19:26Speaker 2: but this is pretty close to the top of the list.
- 19:29Speaker 1: This came as a surprise.
- 19:32Speaker 2: The pin master is, At Williamsport, Todd Frazier came up
- 19:37Speaker 2: with this pin of me, Ravi, and Todd together in
- 19:42Speaker 2: the booth. We did 100 games in the booth over
- 19:45Speaker 2: those five years, I'm sure.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Or maybe not that many, but a lot. So, Todd.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Tell us the thinking behind making this pin for me
- 19:54Speaker 2: and Ravi and for you.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I wanted to show off the personality
- 20:00Speaker 3: there a little bit. So you see how big I am, Carl,
- 20:03Speaker 3: you know, a little bit bigger. And then I got,
- 20:05Speaker 3: I got a little Timney's head. So I wanted to
- 20:07Speaker 3: make his head like kind of, stick out here a
- 20:10Speaker 3: little bit, you know, just like on Carl's shoulder. Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 3: It's beautiful thing right there. And then the next one,
- 20:19Speaker 3: I made you look like a little mouse. Like it was,
- 20:21Speaker 3: it was just an ongoing little thing that we had
- 20:24Speaker 3: going on. I don't know if you have the other
- 20:25Speaker 3: one with you.
- 20:28Speaker 1: It's somewhere in here. Oh, here it is. Here it is.
- 20:33Speaker 1: There it is. Look, look at the tiny little, I
- 20:39Speaker 1: can't my.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Nose is bigger than my head here that's ridiculous.
- 20:44Speaker 3: Oh hey listen Tim I know you really enjoy them
- 20:49Speaker 3: I wouldn't have made those if I knew you wouldn't
- 20:51Speaker 3: get a good laugh but those pins were going like
- 20:54Speaker 3: hotcakes and everybody loves pancakes so everybody wanted a little
- 20:59Speaker 3: piece of this year people were asking who's did you
- 21:02Speaker 3: make a pin with the little guy on it and
- 21:03Speaker 3: I said oh Jesus they're talking about Tim I said, listen,
- 21:07Speaker 3: that's not a little guy. That's Mr. Wisdom, I call him.
- 21:11Speaker 3: He's got the wisdom. Don't call him little, okay? And
- 21:15Speaker 3: I said, I didn't make them this year, but I'm
- 21:17Speaker 3: sure I'll think of something next year.
- 21:20Speaker 1: That's pretty good. What is the latest on the pins, Todd?
- 21:23Speaker 2: What's our best guess on how many pins you have
- 21:27Speaker 2: and how and where are they displayed.
- 21:29Speaker 1: At the moment?
- 21:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I have them all downstairs in the basement on
- 21:35Speaker 3: big cork boards. My wife found this site that makes
- 21:39Speaker 3: like six by four feet cork boards. So they're all
- 21:42Speaker 3: stacked up. I got to put all the new ones on.
- 21:45Speaker 3: I would say, honestly, anywhere from 12 to 15,000. I
- 21:49Speaker 3: haven't really counted, but I know I'm in the five
- 21:52Speaker 3: digits of pins. And there was a lot of good
- 21:55Speaker 3: ones this year, especially for the 250th anniversary of America
- 22:00Speaker 3: and the 25th anniversary of 9-11. There were some really,
- 22:04Speaker 3: really good pins. I made one, too. with an eagle
- 22:07Speaker 3: covering the Twin Towers. It was pretty cool.
- 22:10Speaker 1: Very cool. Right. Right.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Not to bring up a bad subject, Todd, but I
- 22:14Speaker 2: know I've never asked you this.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Where were you at 9-11? Exactly where were you when
- 22:20Speaker 1: all this happened?
- 22:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I was in high school. I was a sophomore
- 22:24Speaker 3: in high school. And I was going to my history
- 22:27Speaker 3: class with Mr. Powitz, Mitch Powitz. He was my assistant
- 22:30Speaker 3: baseball coach. And my buddy Andy Altman comes to me
- 22:34Speaker 3: and said, dude, the Twin Towers are gone. or one
- 22:37Speaker 3: of the twin towers just got hit by a plane.
- 22:40Speaker 3: And Andy was a joke. So I'm like, Andy, get
- 22:41Speaker 3: the class, leave me alone. I go in the history class,
- 22:44Speaker 3: lo and behold, the TV's on showing exactly what happened.
- 22:49Speaker 3: And it was just pandemonium, really. I mean, people were crying.
- 22:56Speaker 3: I'm 50 miles from New York City. I remember one
- 23:02Speaker 3: of the girls coming up to me in our class,
- 23:05Speaker 3: you know, I got to make a call. She ran
- 23:07Speaker 3: out of class. Teacher, you can't leave. People were going bonkers,
- 23:10Speaker 3: making sure family members are okay. Coming back the next
- 23:13Speaker 3: day in my arms, crying, saying my uncle for the
- 23:16Speaker 3: first time who works in the Twin Towers missed the
- 23:20Speaker 3: bus to go to work. And he said, well, guess what?
- 23:22Speaker 3: I'm just going to miss one day. Lo and behold,
- 23:25Speaker 3: that was the day he missed. So the story's were incredible.
- 23:29Speaker 3: It was crazy. Just absolutely crazy.
- 23:32Speaker 4: You know, similarly, Todd, you know, I was much younger.
- 23:35Speaker 4: I was in the third grade, but I was 20
- 23:37Speaker 4: miles from the Pentagon where, where.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Yeah. So very different experience for us in the DC
- 23:44Speaker 4: area than those. And, you know, I went to Syracuse.
- 23:46Speaker 4: We had a lot of friends who were, you know,
- 23:48Speaker 4: Manhattan people, New Jersey, you know, Westchester County, all that stuff. Like,
- 23:53Speaker 4: so I, I know the stories to be very different
- 23:55Speaker 4: and it, it can be, It's really crazy, but I
- 23:58Speaker 4: always think to myself it's so important, especially this time
- 24:01Speaker 4: of year, to keep the stories alive. Because jokes aside,
- 24:05Speaker 4: before we know it, our great-grandkids are going to be asking, well,
- 24:09Speaker 4: how old were you, great-grandpa, when you were there? And
- 24:12Speaker 4: what happened? And do you remember it? I mean, I remember, sorry, Dad,
- 24:15Speaker 4: not being funny, but I remember the first time I
- 24:18Speaker 4: connected the dots of how old my dad was when
- 24:21Speaker 4: John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Like when I.
- 24:23Speaker 4: Figured that out, first thing I asked him, what do
- 24:25Speaker 4: you remember? And that seems like eons ago.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:29Speaker 4: But he was a child for that. And we'll have that,
- 24:31Speaker 4: you know, when we're growing up and our kids, kids
- 24:33Speaker 4: are asking us about it. So I think it's so
- 24:35Speaker 4: important to keep those stories alive and keep talking about it,
- 24:38Speaker 4: to keep the memory of those we lost alive.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Of course. How did baseball help us get through nine 11?
- 24:45Speaker 2: Cause I have a bunch of stories that I remember
- 24:48Speaker 2: like they were yesterday and What do you think baseball,
- 24:52Speaker 2: what kind of role did baseball play in getting the
- 24:55Speaker 2: country through 9-11?
- 24:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Played a huge part. I mean, two things I could
- 25:02Speaker 3: think of, you know, George Bush Jr., right? Yeah, GW,
- 25:08Speaker 3: throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium. I get
- 25:11Speaker 3: goosebumps thinking about that. Absolute strike right down the plate.
- 25:16Speaker 3: I mean, you couldn't have scripted it any better. Something
- 25:19Speaker 3: The crowd going bonkers. Couldn't happen in a better place
- 25:22Speaker 3: in New York. And I think about that Mike Piazza
- 25:25Speaker 3: home run. I mean, holy cow. I mean, those are
- 25:28Speaker 3: the two things I think of that people are like, yeah, listen,
- 25:32Speaker 3: it's a second thought compared to what really happened. But
- 25:37Speaker 3: when you think about aftermath, there's something you've got to
- 25:40Speaker 3: find and hold on to to get you right a
- 25:43Speaker 3: little bit. You know, it's not always going to be
- 25:44Speaker 3: the same. but something that can take your mind off it,
- 25:48Speaker 3: even if for a split second. And I thought those
- 25:50Speaker 3: were two instances right there where I was like, whoa, man,
- 25:54Speaker 3: this is America, man. This is the best place in
- 25:59Speaker 3: the world. So that was the two things I think about.
- 26:02Speaker 4: I know we take sports very seriously, right? And for you, Todd,
- 26:06Speaker 4: and dad, it's your livelihood. But what are sports for
- 26:10Speaker 4: if not taking you away from reality for a bit?
- 26:13Speaker 4: And we needed... We needed something to help us move forward.
- 26:18Speaker 4: And I think baseball and so many others, comedy and
- 26:21Speaker 4: film and other things, helped us get there. And so, Todd,
- 26:24Speaker 4: thank you for sharing those stories. I know we're a
- 26:26Speaker 4: couple days post-25th anniversary, but it's real fascinating to hear that,
- 26:30Speaker 4: for sure.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Right.
- 26:32Speaker 1: And I was at the George W.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Bush game, of course, and I still get goosebumps thinking
- 26:38Speaker 2: about it because I was there, and it was unbelievably exciting.
- 26:41Speaker 2: powerful and you you had bobby valentine didn't you the
- 26:45Speaker 2: other day todd on foul territory did he tell did
- 26:48Speaker 2: he tell you stories about what that night was like
- 26:51Speaker 2: when piazza hit the homer off of steve carsey.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Yeah no i was the one that asked i asked
- 26:57Speaker 3: him about it right you know you could see how
- 27:01Speaker 3: he was emotional he was emotional about the whole thing
- 27:04Speaker 3: he's talking about how you know security was everywhere um
- 27:09Speaker 3: how they needed something. You know, the game was just
- 27:11Speaker 3: kind of going blah a little bit, and they were
- 27:14Speaker 3: the only team there in New York at the time,
- 27:16Speaker 3: and all of a sudden, big Mike Piazza comes up,
- 27:19Speaker 3: hits that home run, and he said it was one
- 27:22Speaker 3: of the best memories he's had in a baseball game,
- 27:26Speaker 3: coaching a game ever, and how it brought a city
- 27:29Speaker 3: together and how everybody was, whether you were a Yankee fan,
- 27:32Speaker 3: Met fan, or no fan, something had to hit you
- 27:37Speaker 3: in a strong way after that happened. He said.
- 27:45Speaker 2: You played for six major league teams, some more than others.
- 27:49Speaker 2: The reds, of course, at the beginning of your career,
- 27:52Speaker 2: do you have, do you have mementos from all of
- 27:55Speaker 2: those teams?
- 27:56Speaker 1: Do you have pictures?
- 27:57Speaker 2: Just what do you do with the teams for which
- 28:00Speaker 2: you played during your career?
- 28:04Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, that's a great question. I, I was
- 28:06Speaker 3: a big collector of baseball cleats. So I have about
- 28:09Speaker 3: 60 in my, in my man cave, uh, whether it
- 28:13Speaker 3: was from players on my team or other teams, I collected, um,
- 28:17Speaker 3: scorecards like, um, my 600th RBI, whatever team I was on.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I think that might've been the white socks or mats.
- 28:25Speaker 3: I forget. My 500th run was another team. My first
- 28:29Speaker 3: home run with the reds, uh, my three run home
- 28:32Speaker 3: run in the playoffs with the Yankees. Um, Rangers, first
- 28:37Speaker 3: home run in that new stadium, I took that scorecard. Pirates,
- 28:41Speaker 3: I got nothing, but I only played 19 days there.
- 28:47Speaker 3: I think I was two for 32. And my last
- 28:52Speaker 3: at-bat ever in a major league uniform was a bleeder
- 28:56Speaker 3: to right field, single. And I'll take it. I mean,
- 29:01Speaker 3: I would love for you to find out how many guys...
- 29:03Speaker 3: retired or left baseball with getting a hit before they left.
- 29:07Speaker 3: I think that would be a crazy stat to find out.
- 29:11Speaker 3: That might take you 40 years.
- 29:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 29:15Speaker 2: You know David Ross is the only player to hit
- 29:18Speaker 2: a home run in Game 7 of the World Series
- 29:22Speaker 2: and then retire after that. And it was, I believe,
- 29:27Speaker 2: his last at bat in that game. So his last
- 29:30Speaker 2: at bat as a major leaguer was a home run
- 29:33Speaker 2: in game seven of the World Series. And then he retired.
- 29:37Speaker 2: that that's pretty incredible. And I, this is way off
- 29:43Speaker 2: the topic, but I covered Mike Witt's perfect game in 1984.
- 29:48Speaker 2: And the final batter in that game was Marv Foley
- 29:53Speaker 2: who grounded out to second base as a pinch hitter.
- 29:56Speaker 2: And it was his, Final at bat in the major
- 29:59Speaker 2: leagues was an out to finish a perfect game. I mean,
- 30:04Speaker 2: only baseball can supply these ridiculous coincidences.
- 30:09Speaker 1: And yours was just a little bleeder to right field.
- 30:12Speaker 1: But a knock's a knock. Hey, you could tell everyone. Hey, hey,
- 30:15Speaker 1: I got it. I went to Williamsport. I got a hit. Right.
- 30:19Speaker 1: All else would be about field. Freaking field.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll tell you. It was that wriggly. And then
- 30:28Speaker 3: they brought me in the next day, and they're like, hey, dude,
- 30:31Speaker 3: you're gone.
- 30:31Speaker 1: I'm like, okay.
- 30:35Speaker 3: I was a little bitter. I was a little bitter.
- 30:37Speaker 3: But then I played for Team USA, though. I got
- 30:39Speaker 3: to finish my career with Team USA, so that was great.
- 30:43Speaker 2: And then, Todd, I know you told us about that
- 30:45Speaker 2: last year when we talked to you, but what was
- 30:48Speaker 2: your highlight of Team USM? You're playing for your country,
- 30:52Speaker 2: for goodness sakes.
- 30:52Speaker 1: What was that like?
- 30:56Speaker 3: I get such a kick. I love baseball. I love
- 30:59Speaker 3: battling against camaraderie. I think back to when I played
- 31:04Speaker 3: in high school, the teams that you hated and despised.
- 31:08Speaker 3: I would get so amped up for them. But there's
- 31:11Speaker 3: nothing like a feeling when you got to play against
- 31:15Speaker 3: any country in the world. We opened up with Nicaragua,
- 31:19Speaker 3: and I was telling the boys, I got them in
- 31:21Speaker 3: a huddle. I'm firing them up. I said, these guys
- 31:23Speaker 3: are coming for us. All of a sudden, they're up
- 31:26Speaker 3: 1-0 in the first. And actually, we're in Port St. Lucie,
- 31:29Speaker 3: and I think most of the crowd is cheering for Nicaragua.
- 31:31Speaker 3: And I'm like, oh, I told them. I said, listen,
- 31:35Speaker 3: nobody wants to see us lose. Everybody wants to see
- 31:38Speaker 3: the USA lose. I promise you that. Now let's go
- 31:43Speaker 3: out and beat them. I think we won 8-1. But
- 31:45Speaker 3: then we play a Dominican team. Oh, man, with some
- 31:49Speaker 3: of the bats they had there. Venezuela. Venezuela. When you
- 31:52Speaker 3: play against another country and you have the red, white,
- 31:55Speaker 3: and blue on, I don't care what sport it is.
- 31:57Speaker 3: I don't care if it's hopscotch. I don't care if
- 32:01Speaker 3: it's eating, you know, who can eat more eggs, but
- 32:03Speaker 3: I'm wearing USA. It is an absolute thrill. It's an
- 32:08Speaker 3: honor and it's a battle because they're going to bring their,
- 32:11Speaker 3: whoever it is. And we played really well. We didn't
- 32:14Speaker 3: lose a game until we got to the championship and
- 32:17Speaker 3: the gold medal match. We lost to Japan to nothing.
- 32:20Speaker 3: They had, You know what they do in Japan, Tim
- 32:22Speaker 3: and Jeff? They stopped their professional league for two weeks
- 32:26Speaker 3: just for the Olympics. And we had some non-40-man guys.
- 32:31Speaker 3: We had, you know, guys that were trying to get
- 32:34Speaker 3: back in the league. We only lost 2-0. I tell
- 32:36Speaker 3: you what, if we had a five-game series, I think
- 32:38Speaker 3: we'd get them.
- 32:39Speaker 1: That is so cool.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Now, Todd, didn't you break out in a song at
- 32:43Speaker 2: one point during Team USA? One of your teammates told us,
- 32:48Speaker 2: That you just started.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Singing to the team. Is that true? Tell that story.
- 32:52Speaker 3: You know, it was Eddie Alvarez. Remember Eddie Alvarez?
- 32:56Speaker 1: Yes. We had him on the show.
- 32:57Speaker 3: He's a speed skater.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:59Speaker 3: The Winter Olympics and the Summer Olympics. I'm trying to
- 33:03Speaker 3: remember what the hell I was singing. I do it
- 33:05Speaker 3: so often, I forget. But it was like an opera song.
- 33:10Speaker 1: And I came out like this.
- 33:12Speaker 3: And I did something....
- 33:14Speaker 4: I believe it was Arabian Nights, if I remember correctly.
- 33:17Speaker 3: Oh, yes, you're right.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Yes, way to go, Jeff.
- 33:26Speaker 3: You can tell I'm hoarse right now. But I'm not
- 33:30Speaker 3: afraid to make the team laugh. And some people might
- 33:33Speaker 3: think I'm silly and being an idiot. I don't care.
- 33:36Speaker 3: That's just the person I am.
- 33:38Speaker 4: So, Todd, I'm obviously a big proponent of clubhouse vibes, right? Like,
- 33:44Speaker 4: I think a team needs a guy like a Todd Frazier,
- 33:47Speaker 4: but you're that guy for a lot of teams you
- 33:49Speaker 4: played for, but did you ever have another vibes guy?
- 33:53Speaker 4: I mean, you were a great Major League player, but
- 33:55Speaker 4: you also kept things light in the clubhouse, which is important.
- 33:59Speaker 4: Was there anybody else you played with who you were like, yeah,
- 34:01Speaker 4: me and this guy? Or that you learned the importance
- 34:05Speaker 4: of that from because of the vibes he was putting on?
- 34:09Speaker 3: There's not many out there like me, Jeff. And I'm
- 34:12Speaker 3: not trying to toot my own horn. I am humble
- 34:18Speaker 3: as they come. But I was an idiot when I
- 34:22Speaker 3: was in the clubhouse. And I'm telling you right now,
- 34:25Speaker 3: I told my wife this. I said, listen, you will
- 34:28Speaker 3: never know who I was when I was playing baseball.
- 34:31Speaker 3: You'll see me play. But indoors, the stories and the
- 34:36Speaker 3: fun times I had, Not many could top what I did.
- 34:39Speaker 3: And some of them might say just downright crazy. And
- 34:43Speaker 3: I was. I was a little kooky because I wanted
- 34:46Speaker 3: everybody to do well. And if I had to go
- 34:48Speaker 3: through extremes to make somebody smile and be an idiot,
- 34:51Speaker 3: so be it.
- 34:52Speaker 4: Why not?
- 34:53Speaker 2: Todd, tell the story about how you used to leave
- 34:55Speaker 2: the trainer's room in Cincinnati and go out to the
- 34:59Speaker 2: field for a game. And you sang the same stupid
- 35:02Speaker 2: song to everyone in the training room.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Is that correct? Would you please explain?
- 35:07Speaker 3: So... I would do roll call. So when I came
- 35:12Speaker 3: in the training room, like at Yankee Stadium, and I'd
- 35:17Speaker 3: hit the door, I'd go, I'd go, ho! And whoever
- 35:24Speaker 3: was in front of me, even if it was one,
- 35:25Speaker 3: I'd be like, Brandon Phillips! Brandon! And I would do
- 35:30Speaker 3: it until he gave me like a wave or a
- 35:33Speaker 3: tip of the cap. And if they would run away
- 35:36Speaker 3: from me, I'd be like, all right, you're done. And
- 35:38Speaker 3: then I would do the training step. You know, I
- 35:41Speaker 3: do Tomas Vera. He is Spanish. Like, and I would
- 35:46Speaker 3: start doing that. And then I would finish with our masseuse.
- 35:51Speaker 3: Her name was Mickey. Great. One of the greatest massagers
- 35:54Speaker 3: you'll ever have in your life. Professional. And I go, Mickey. Mickey.
- 35:58Speaker 3: And she'd give the wave and tip. I'd go, hey, Mickey,
- 36:00Speaker 3: you're so fine. You blow my mind. Hey, Mickey! And
- 36:05Speaker 3: that's how we would finish it up. So, Mickey, I
- 36:10Speaker 3: love you to death. I hope she's doing well. But
- 36:12Speaker 3: she got a kick out of that every time I
- 36:14Speaker 3: did it for her.
- 36:22Speaker 2: John, how you can really sing. Don't be modest about this.
- 36:26Speaker 2: How long have you been singing? Did you sing in
- 36:28Speaker 2: a choir or did you swing, sing an element?
- 36:31Speaker 1: Jeffrey can really sing. Where did your voice come from?
- 36:36Speaker 3: Jeffrey can sing. I'm an imposter. I was in the
- 36:38Speaker 3: choir for two or two years, maybe three years. And
- 36:46Speaker 3: I don't have any video, but you could tell I
- 36:48Speaker 3: was into it with the hand gestures and everything, but
- 36:55Speaker 3: I didn't really take it serious, but I like humming
- 37:01Speaker 3: and doing harmonizations. I love acapella, Jeffrey. I love listening
- 37:05Speaker 3: to people do acapella. I dream one day that I
- 37:08Speaker 3: could do that. I'm not ever even close to that.
- 37:12Speaker 4: Todd, we can make this happen. In 2011, I went
- 37:16Speaker 4: to Syracuse for my freshman year, and I started an
- 37:19Speaker 4: acapella group with my friends. And our mascot is Otto,
- 37:23Speaker 4: so we were the Otto Toons.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Yep.
- 37:26Speaker 4: Oh, and that was, that was 15 years ago, Todd.
- 37:30Speaker 4: And the group still is going strong and no way.
- 37:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 37:34Speaker 4: It was just a bunch of guys who were singing in,
- 37:37Speaker 4: in our basement of our dorm and then the dining halls.
- 37:39Speaker 4: And now auto tunes is, is very much alive and well.
- 37:43Speaker 4: So if you ever find yourself in Syracuse, New York,
- 37:47Speaker 4: for any reason whatsoever, you're going to a game to
- 37:50Speaker 4: see the triple a team there. You're going to visit
- 37:52Speaker 4: the camp. Who knows? You call me immediately. You tell
- 37:55Speaker 4: me what song you want, and they'll have backing vocals
- 37:58Speaker 4: for you in no time at all, and they'll let
- 38:01Speaker 4: you have the dream of singing with an acapella group.
- 38:04Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 38:06Speaker 1: It's a done deal.
- 38:08Speaker 3: It's it. I'm in. I'm in.
- 38:15Speaker 4: I had you as the lead, but you could be
- 38:17Speaker 4: baritone anytime.
- 38:19Speaker 3: Baritone me. I'm ready.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Tim, what do you think?
- 38:23Speaker 2: Dopey Dad asked Jeff once, wouldn't it be better if
- 38:27Speaker 2: you put a little music to the words? Wouldn't that
- 38:29Speaker 2: be better?
- 38:30Speaker 1: And he had to explain, Dad, that's the point. We
- 38:32Speaker 1: don't need any music. We're acapella. It is great.
- 38:37Speaker 3: If you can get somebody that sounds like the music
- 38:41Speaker 3: in the background to the beats, there's nothing better than that, too.
- 38:45Speaker 3: It's crazy.
- 38:46Speaker 4: I told my dad when he told me that, I said,
- 38:48Speaker 4: that's like going to a major league pitcher and saying,
- 38:50Speaker 4: have you ever thought about throwing it in a place
- 38:51Speaker 4: they can't hit it?
- 38:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Poor Pop-Pop.
- 38:57Speaker 2: So, Todd, if we gave you karaoke today and you
- 39:00Speaker 2: had one song to sing from your favorite artist, it
- 39:04Speaker 2: could be a band, it could be Frank Sinatra, I
- 39:06Speaker 2: don't care.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Who are you going to.
- 39:08Speaker 2: Sing at karaoke if you got one song to sing?
- 39:14Speaker 3: There's only one song I sing, Tim, and I think
- 39:16Speaker 3: you'll appreciate this one because it's kind of, you know,
- 39:20Speaker 3: I was a little hipster back in the day. It
- 39:22Speaker 3: was a little... It's kind of Jersey shoreish for me
- 39:26Speaker 3: it would be under the boardwalk how about a seat
- 39:33Speaker 3: on a blanket with my baby that's where you'll see
- 39:36Speaker 3: tim and i yeah listen like that is the only
- 39:41Speaker 3: song i sing a karaoke is under the boardwalk Todd,
- 39:45Speaker 3: that's pretty good.
- 39:46Speaker 1: Like I said, you are a talented guy. You have
- 39:49Speaker 1: a great voice. That is so great. Now, Todd, I
- 39:52Speaker 1: want to just switch subjects for a second. Your dad
- 39:55Speaker 1: is 6'8, right? Yeah, he is. And you're like 6'3, right?
- 40:02Speaker 2: And you told me once, God, if I had ever
- 40:04Speaker 2: been as big as my dad. Now, Todd, if you
- 40:07Speaker 2: had been 6'8, I mean, I want to be fair here.
- 40:11Speaker 2: You might not be as great a baseball player as
- 40:14Speaker 2: you would have been because it's hard to be a
- 40:17Speaker 2: position player at 6'8. That's why Aaron Judge is a
- 40:20Speaker 2: miracle that he's this good at 6'7, 282.
- 40:24Speaker 1: If you were indeed.
- 40:26Speaker 2: The size of your dad, 6'8, what? I mean, you
- 40:30Speaker 2: might have played in the big leagues, but what were
- 40:32Speaker 2: the options if you were 6'8?
- 40:35Speaker 3: Well, I would think I'd be like a Richie Sexton type.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Wasn't he pretty tall?
- 40:40Speaker 1: He was 6'7, yes. Maybe 6'8. He's listed at two
- 40:44Speaker 1: different heights, yeah.
- 40:46Speaker 3: I feel like I would have hit like him, but
- 40:49Speaker 3: if I was 6'8, man, dude, listen, I was... It
- 40:55Speaker 3: would have to be basketball then. I think I would
- 40:58Speaker 3: have to go the route that you went and you
- 41:00Speaker 3: couldn't muster it up. It's just something that I would
- 41:04Speaker 3: have to do basketball and it would have to be...
- 41:06Speaker 3: I would have went to Rutgers. Most definitely. I would
- 41:10Speaker 3: have broke all the records there in basketball. You know,
- 41:13Speaker 3: you never know. Played for the New Jersey Nets back
- 41:15Speaker 3: in the day with Keith Van Horn. I don't know,
- 41:18Speaker 3: maybe something like that.
- 41:19Speaker 4: You know, it's funny, Todd, because my dad and I
- 41:22Speaker 4: constantly look at each other and go, you know, if
- 41:24Speaker 4: we were 5'8, the things we could have done if
- 41:28Speaker 4: we had hit that number.
- 41:30Speaker 3: Yes, oh my God.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Todd, how many points, don't be modest, how many points
- 41:36Speaker 2: did you score your senior year in high school?
- 41:39Speaker 1: What did you average?
- 41:41Speaker 3: I averaged 20 on the dot my senior year, 20.
- 41:45Speaker 1: That is pretty cool.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Now tell us about the time, I think I got
- 41:48Speaker 2: this right, that you played against J.R.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Smith. How did that go? So it was one of
- 41:55Speaker 3: our last games of the year, and we're playing against J.R.,
- 41:59Speaker 3: and I'm like, Coach, let me get him. We'll go
- 42:02Speaker 3: box one. Everybody knows what a box one is. It's
- 42:05Speaker 3: a box zone. And then the one guy, meaning me,
- 42:08Speaker 3: has to chase around the best player on the court. Now,
- 42:12Speaker 3: if you knew me back then, I wasn't the best defender.
- 42:15Speaker 3: So our coach says, man, what makes you think you
- 42:17Speaker 3: can defend the best player in New Jersey? I said,
- 42:19Speaker 3: I'm going to make it a point. I'm not going to.
- 42:21Speaker 3: I don't care about points, this and that. So let's go. Hey,
- 42:25Speaker 3: go screw it. Let's go. You got him, Todd. Yeah,
- 42:27Speaker 3: let's go. Let's go. Everybody's fired up. Lo and behold,
- 42:32Speaker 3: this is one of the best teams in New Jersey.
- 42:34Speaker 3: He comes down the lane. I get in front, take
- 42:37Speaker 3: the charge. I get up, I get in his face.
- 42:39Speaker 3: He elbows me in the chest. I did a technical
- 42:42Speaker 3: and like literally I couldn't breathe for about 30 seconds.
- 42:48Speaker 3: He absolutely crushed me. He should have got thrown out
- 42:51Speaker 3: of the game. Nobody called it though, which fine. We
- 42:54Speaker 3: don't want to see the best player out of the game.
- 42:55Speaker 3: I'm not trying to win. I told the ref, I said,
- 42:58Speaker 3: I don't want to win. I'm just, I can't breathe.
- 43:00Speaker 3: It's okay. Long story short. We're up five going in
- 43:05Speaker 3: the half. I got 13 points. I'm locking him up.
- 43:08Speaker 3: He's got, I think he's got about the same, 13 points.
- 43:11Speaker 3: He's averaging like 38 a game. Halftime, they get the ball, right?
- 43:17Speaker 3: Ball in, he takes one dribble over half and goes,
- 43:20Speaker 3: he goes, watch this, Frazier. Shoots it. Nothing but net.
- 43:23Speaker 3: I called timeout. I said, I said, what was that?
- 43:30Speaker 3: Our coach comes over and says, who called timeout? I said,
- 43:32Speaker 3: I did. He was going to make that shot. He
- 43:36Speaker 3: ended up with, he ended up with 58 points. He
- 43:41Speaker 3: dropped a 40 spot in the second half and we
- 43:43Speaker 3: lost by like 30. And I'm like, I said, we'll
- 43:47Speaker 3: get them next year. Don't worry. And that was it
- 43:49Speaker 3: for my career, my sophomore year in high school.
- 43:52Speaker 4: You know, Todd, it's the funniest thing because, you know,
- 43:55Speaker 4: when I was playing pickup regularly, I would always tell
- 43:59Speaker 4: my buddies, I say, if you're the best pickup player,
- 44:01Speaker 4: that's great. But we had some walk-on on the Syracuse
- 44:05Speaker 4: basketball team who never got a minute. And a guy,
- 44:08Speaker 4: not a friend of mine, and if he was, he
- 44:10Speaker 4: wouldn't be a friend anymore. He says, oh, this guy's
- 44:12Speaker 4: some scrub. He barely made the team. He didn't miss
- 44:15Speaker 4: a shot. And I'm saying, you have to realize there's
- 44:18Speaker 4: a difference between being a good pickup player and being
- 44:22Speaker 4: a walk-on on a Division I major program. So when
- 44:26Speaker 4: you see J.R. Smith, Todd was a great basketball player.
- 44:29Speaker 4: No disrespect, but then you have J.R. Smith Who's a
- 44:33Speaker 4: longtime NBA player. There's a huge difference. We saw, so
- 44:36Speaker 4: our neighbor played with Kevin Durant. So we went to
- 44:42Speaker 4: a game at Montrose Christian high school and Kevin came
- 44:45Speaker 4: off the bench as a sophomore, mind you. And my
- 44:49Speaker 4: favorite story about Kevin Durant, which we, my dad has
- 44:51Speaker 4: told at nauseam and I love saying it too, is
- 44:54Speaker 4: our neighbor's father was saying, if you want to be
- 44:56Speaker 4: an NBA player, You got to go into the gym
- 44:59Speaker 4: before practice. They always practice at 6 a.m.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Before school, right?
- 45:03Speaker 4: 200 shots after practice. Dad, no, I mean, I really
- 45:07Speaker 4: want to work hard, but we practice before, we practice after.
- 45:09Speaker 4: I'm exhausted. Because there's only one guy on the team
- 45:12Speaker 4: who will ever, ever even do that. Kevin.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Kevin Durant. It's like, it's different.
- 45:19Speaker 2: The lesson is the levels of play. People don't understand
- 45:24Speaker 2: the levels of play. I played baseball in high school. Congratulations.
- 45:29Speaker 2: I had nothing that has absolutely no bearing on playing
- 45:34Speaker 2: in the big leagues.
- 45:35Speaker 1: And people don't see it that way. They should. Am
- 45:38Speaker 1: I right?
- 45:39Speaker 3: You're right. I saw the other day. I forget what
- 45:42Speaker 3: football team. It might have been the Giants. I don't know.
- 45:44Speaker 3: And they asked, at 100 pitches, how many would you
- 45:48Speaker 3: put in play? And some guy said 10 or 20.
- 45:51Speaker 3: And I started laughing. Because I thought, Tim, I thought
- 45:55Speaker 3: of you on the whole thing. And your answer would
- 45:57Speaker 3: be definitely zero.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Zero. I've asked it a million times. Now, Todd, we'll
- 46:09Speaker 1: finish with a couple more here, then we'll let you go.
- 46:10Speaker 1: We've taken way too much time. The football season opened yesterday.
- 46:14Speaker 1: We're taping this on Monday.
- 46:16Speaker 2: Who is your football team and how crazy of a
- 46:20Speaker 2: fan are you for football? We talked about baseball and
- 46:23Speaker 2: basketball yesterday. What's your football team, and who's your guy?
- 46:29Speaker 3: I'm a big Tampa Bay Buccaneer fan. Back in 98, 99,
- 46:35Speaker 3: I really loved Mike Allstott, the A-train. Purdue, he went
- 46:40Speaker 3: to Purdue. Monty Kiffin with the Tampa 2 defense with
- 46:44Speaker 3: Rodney Barber. John Lynch, Brooks. There was some really good players'
- 46:51Speaker 3: work done in the backfields. and Brad Johnson throwing with
- 46:55Speaker 3: a glove on to win the Super Bowl. I think
- 46:56Speaker 3: it was 2003. So I really love them, and I'm
- 47:00Speaker 3: sticking with them. I hope they can figure it out.
- 47:04Speaker 3: Their defense gave up 33 points. That's not a good start.
- 47:08Speaker 3: I mean, we got to really get cooking here. So
- 47:11Speaker 3: we'll see what happens, but I'm going to stick with
- 47:14Speaker 3: my Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
- 47:16Speaker 2: But your son, Todd, your seven-year-old son, is tearing it up. Now,
- 47:21Speaker 2: just give a little shout-out to the little guy who's
- 47:23Speaker 2: running all over the field.
- 47:26Speaker 3: Grant Frazier, we call him Toast. Grant Toast, all he
- 47:30Speaker 3: ate was toast when he was younger. This kid is
- 47:34Speaker 3: an animal, man. He loves it. He used to do
- 47:36Speaker 3: flag football. Now we put him in pads. He's fast.
- 47:40Speaker 3: He's not afraid of contact. He's a middle linebacker. They...
- 47:44Speaker 3: They won. They're 3-0 right now and looking for more.
- 47:47Speaker 3: He had two touchdowns the other day. He's a beast.
- 47:51Speaker 3: And dad's up there screaming his head off, acting like
- 47:54Speaker 3: a lunatic. So I got to go up in the
- 47:57Speaker 3: back of the end zone and be an animal myself.
- 48:00Speaker 2: All right, Todd, explain the satisfaction of you hitting a
- 48:04Speaker 2: major league homer or watching your seven-year-old son like zigzag
- 48:09Speaker 2: and dart through everyone for a touchdown.
- 48:12Speaker 1: What gives you more satisfaction?
- 48:15Speaker 3: Oh, man, definitely watching my kids doing anything. I mean,
- 48:19Speaker 3: getting a single is more satisfaction. Striking a guy out
- 48:22Speaker 3: if they're pitching. Now my youngest grant's hitting holes and
- 48:28Speaker 3: scoring touchdowns. There is nothing better. And I tell him,
- 48:31Speaker 3: I tell my boys, I want you to be better
- 48:33Speaker 3: than I am. Please. I beg you. I implore you.
- 48:37Speaker 3: Don't be afraid to be better than your dad. Cause
- 48:39Speaker 3: you're going to be going places for sure. Hopefully.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 48:42Speaker 4: Steve Harvey famously once said, you know, your, your son is,
- 48:47Speaker 4: will be the only man that you root to be
- 48:50Speaker 4: better than you in your life when you really think
- 48:53Speaker 4: about it. And with an amazing dad like I have,
- 48:56Speaker 4: I mean, he is my number one fan. He checks
- 48:59Speaker 4: into the morning show. He's always checking on me, making
- 49:02Speaker 4: sure everything's good. And we welcomed a son in June, Todd.
- 49:05Speaker 4: I got the little three-year-old. And three-year-old girl. And I
- 49:09Speaker 4: would have never, I would have like, I never knew
- 49:11Speaker 4: what it was like to be a dad. And then
- 49:13Speaker 4: I became a girl dad and it was everything. And
- 49:15Speaker 4: it's so beautiful. And then we found out we're having
- 49:17Speaker 4: a boy. I'm like, I have no idea what to
- 49:19Speaker 4: think about.
- 49:20Speaker 1: That.
- 49:20Speaker 4: And now that we have him, it's a whole other
- 49:22Speaker 4: relationship and a whole new thing for me. So I'm,
- 49:25Speaker 4: I'm really looking forward to it. He's not doing much now,
- 49:28Speaker 4: but you know, he's three months old, but we'll, we'll
- 49:30Speaker 4: get there.
- 49:31Speaker 3: We'll get there.
- 49:31Speaker 4: He's starting to laugh at my bits, which we can
- 49:33Speaker 4: take pop.
- 49:34Speaker 3: Yes. Pop pop Tim. I was supposed to do the
- 49:36Speaker 3: interview with you guys in Wayne sport. I got to
- 49:39Speaker 3: get home. kindergarten starts tomorrow. We'll talk down the road. Okay.
- 49:45Speaker 3: I'm not missing the first day of kindergarten.
- 49:47Speaker 1: I said, okay.
- 49:48Speaker 3: I said, I'm driving home. I'll see you later. So
- 49:51Speaker 3: all good. And I appreciate that out of you, Tim.
- 49:54Speaker 3: That's awesome. All right.
- 49:55Speaker 1: Well, thank you, Todd.
- 49:56Speaker 2: Now this is, I promise my last question and I'm
- 49:59Speaker 2: still not sure why I get to such a kick
- 50:01Speaker 2: out of this. Just tell us all Todd, the famous
- 50:05Speaker 2: person or one of the most famous people that you
- 50:08Speaker 2: share a birthday with.
- 50:11Speaker 3: Oh, that's my good buddy Abraham Lincoln, man. He shares
- 50:17Speaker 3: a birthday with me.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Honest Abe.
- 50:26Speaker 3: I'm still mad at my mother because she thought about
- 50:28Speaker 3: naming me Lincoln for February 12th. I would have loved
- 50:31Speaker 3: to have been called Lincoln Frazier.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Lincoln Frazier.
- 50:35Speaker 3: That would have been a good one, right?
- 50:37Speaker 4: That that's what my, my wife wanted to name our son.
- 50:40Speaker 4: How crazy is that? We went with Bodie bell bell
- 50:42Speaker 4: being my dad's middle name. Bodie Bell Kirkson, but Lincoln
- 50:46Speaker 4: Kirkson was on the list. So both Mama Frazier and
- 50:52Speaker 4: Mama Kirkson over here passed on the Lincoln name. Crazy, crazy.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Todd, Lincoln Frazier averages 30 in the NBA. He scores
- 51:02Speaker 2: 30 touchdowns a year and he has 500 career homers.
- 51:06Speaker 1: Lincoln Frazier, are you kidding me?
- 51:09Speaker 3: That would have been fantastic. But we got Tim. Tim
- 51:12Speaker 3: and Todd are two most boring names you'll ever see
- 51:14Speaker 3: in your life.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Tim and Todd.
- 51:16Speaker 3: Absolutely boring. Boring as all can be. Oh, your name's Todd. Oh, yeah.
- 51:20Speaker 3: How you doing?
- 51:21Speaker 1: Jesus.
- 51:22Speaker 3: What are you going to do?
- 51:25Speaker 1: All right. Well, Todd, thank you so much for joining
- 51:29Speaker 1: us today. You said it earlier.
- 51:31Speaker 2: Sports is the greatest thing in the world because it
- 51:34Speaker 2: brings out the best in us.
- 51:36Speaker 1: And it gives us a chuckle once in a while
- 51:39Speaker 1: at a time where we can all use one. Agreed?
- 51:43Speaker 3: Agreed. Agreed, man. And I appreciate you guys having me
