- 0:39Welcome back to A Hamster with a Blunt Penknife, a Doctor Who
- 0:43commentary podcast, and I'm Here SAT in Joe's living room about
- 0:47to watch the second episode of a classic Doctor Who story.
- 0:51What classic Doctor Who story is that, Joe?
- 0:53We're currently cosied up on the sofa because we're recording
- 0:57around my phone so we've got to be very close to it.
- 1:00We've got cushions all around. I think it's just an excuse for
- 1:03Joe to sit on my lap. I'll be there by the end of this
- 1:06story, I promise. Today we are talking about the
- 1:10four part Patrick Trouton Classic.
- 1:12Classic. That came, I think, bottom of
- 1:15the oh, recently. The underwater menace is it?
- 1:19Did it really come? Bottom it was this and the Space
- 1:22Pirates. I think that was right down the
- 1:23bottom. No.
- 1:24Yeah, dominable snowman was quite high you.
- 1:26Know snowmen and ice warriors go right to the bottom for me.
- 1:29Oh. That's boring, yeah.
- 1:30I'd rather watch the Dominators. I was literally on that VHS
- 1:34release they did. They did have two episodes.
- 1:36They managed to condense down episodes two and three into 5
- 1:39minutes of animation. Yeah, they could condense the
- 1:41whole thing down into about 10 minutes of animation.
- 1:44Yeah. Are we going to press the
- 1:46reactor and get the ship out, yes or no?
- 1:48Yes, right at the end. There you go.
- 1:52I did promise you some trivia at the start of this episode.
- 1:55Well, so by all accounts that Annika wills this comes from.
- 2:00So whether it's true or not. Her and Donald Tosh don't
- 2:05believe a word they fucking say. Well, what she does say is that
- 2:09Patrick Trout was a bit of a, a Mystic and he was quite excited
- 2:12to have a story set in Atlantis and when all these sort of
- 2:16scripts were up in the end, because there were lots of
- 2:18scripts falling out, you know, the William Ms., the Imps.
- 2:21All the Imps and. Things like this, they were sort
- 2:23of scripts coming. That must the fucking Imps have
- 2:25been to make this over the Imps basically.
- 2:29To Galaxy. War.
- 2:31Oh, Jesus Christ. Anyway, so he was really excited
- 2:37and then he got the scream and she describes him as being
- 2:42incandescent with rage because he was really nervous about
- 2:47taking on the role. And he was Lombard with this.
- 2:49Shit. And he read the script and he
- 2:50went. This is just, I think they
- 2:52called it a dog. It's a dog.
- 2:55He wasn't very nice to. Was it Paddy Russell?
- 2:57No, it wasn't Paddy Russell, was it?
- 2:58It was. Julia Smith, they talk about
- 3:00that as well. They weren't.
- 3:01Very nice to her about it either.
- 3:03That poor woman. And Annika Wills actually says
- 3:05her and Michael Craze because Trout was new and they loved
- 3:08working with him. He told the line Trout was the
- 3:11one being horrible to Julia Smith and they sort of followed
- 3:14suit. And she said, actually it was a
- 3:16bit shameful how we treated it. Yeah, because it, she didn't
- 3:19write the script and she was given the script and kind of had
- 3:23this mammoth task of trying to make it.
- 3:26I know she got in touch with it was given to somebody else first
- 3:29to refuse to. Yeah, Hugh, Hugh Lloyd.
- 3:32Hugh Lloyd. That did the Highlanders.
- 3:35Yeah, caught the script for this.
- 3:37He took one look at. He went to Pinewood apparently,
- 3:39and said can we do this? Yeah.
- 3:41And somebody in the know said no, Yeah.
- 3:44And so he said I want. Because they just done
- 3:47Thunderball, I want to say, or something like that, the James
- 3:49Bond film. So which is, you know, lots set
- 3:51underwater. So he went to look for some
- 3:53advice. Yeah.
- 3:55And the whole thing of can we do this was like, no, you can't,
- 3:58Not on the budget you've got. If you've got the James Bond
- 4:00budget, then yes you can. And so it goes to Julia Smith.
- 4:05Yeah, everybody's appalling to her.
- 4:07Yeah, which I just, I mean, the way people used to behave like
- 4:11it wouldn't fly now, no. No.
- 4:13It wouldn't fly at all. You're not.
- 4:14You can't. You can't behave.
- 4:15Like that? Wow, we, we are unfortunately
- 4:19not going to see what people how they behave because we're
- 4:22watching. A much better version.
- 4:24An elevated version. Shall we skip into two?
- 4:27Yeah, let's skip in. And are you counting it in?
- 4:29You're counting. Yeah, it's my turn.
- 4:31Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK.
- 4:32Well, everybody go in 321. Off we go into this.
- 4:39It's not quite colour. No, it's sort of a.
- 4:42Weird electric blue. Yeah, blue is a colour though,
- 4:48but it's a black and white. I always feel weird too.
- 4:51Bitch, seeing a trout and story with the Hartnell titles, it
- 4:55just feels a little weird. Oh.
- 4:58I've only just. Noticed.
- 4:59Yeah, they change. Why is it the faceless ones or
- 5:01the macro terror? It changes.
- 5:03Is it because they'd already animated?
- 5:05Oh, because I'd animated? No, because the.
- 5:07The ones that he has the the ones that Tracton does the 1st
- 5:12the real I'm not not making sense.
- 5:14I'm. No, no, no.
- 5:16He's drinking fizzy water, folks.
- 5:17That's. The bubbles I've come to my
- 5:19head, the early trap stories all have the Heartwalt titles.
- 5:24I hadn't realised. It changes about halfway through
- 5:27this season. I can't remember exactly which
- 5:29one it is, but it's either Macro Terror or the Faceless Ones by
- 5:32the time we get to the evil of the Daleks.
- 5:34Do you know what my problem is? Is I watch so much Doctor Who.
- 5:37I see so many bloody title sequences in this podcast
- 5:41though, they all just sort of blur into one for me after a
- 5:43while. It's like when you see Pertwee
- 5:44with the Tom Baker titles or Tom Baker with the Peter Davidson
- 5:48titles. Or when you listen to an early
- 5:51Big Finish when they were Tom Baker music.
- 5:54Oh. Terrible mistake.
- 5:55Very odd, very odd. You think they re release them
- 5:58now with the right music, wouldn't you?
- 5:59I'm. Surprised I haven't done that.
- 6:00I mean, I'm sure that'll come soon.
- 6:01Special Edition. I've got a question for you.
- 6:04Hit me OK, Like a fucking double act, aren't we?
- 6:08We finish each other's sentences.
- 6:10Are we finishing each other off? The night is young.
- 6:16Well, we are later I vanish under that table.
- 6:19I'll only be. The night, it's 5 past three in
- 6:22the afternoon. Yeah.
- 6:24Oh, look where we are already. Looking at Zara's giant octopus.
- 6:29It's very impressive, those tentacles, like, oh petite
- 6:33impressive. What was I going to?
- 6:35Ask you a question. If I've gone now, you turned it
- 6:38to smut. I apologise.
- 6:40Oh, I remember. Would you choose to watch this
- 6:46the animated version or would you choose to watch the
- 6:50original? This is the only one that I
- 6:52would choose to watch the animated version of all of.
- 6:54Them, yeah. I mean, I'm assuming we haven't
- 6:58discovered episodes one and four for in this scenario.
- 7:00As well. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:02Yeah, as it currently stands, I think these animated versions of
- 7:05this particular story are much better.
- 7:07I heard people genuinely complaining that they didn't
- 7:12just animate the missing episodes or like, could you
- 7:15imagine how jarring that would be to go from, you know what is
- 7:19probably quite, it looks quite sumptuous to the that
- 7:23marketplace in the original 1, which is the corner of the
- 7:25studio. Doctor Who fans are a weird
- 7:29bunch. Hi, Jeremy Bentham, if you're
- 7:32listening. Can you do that one per episode
- 7:35please? Fuck off.
- 7:39So we haven't quite got out of the cliche of strapping down
- 7:43women and threatening. I mean, I've never got done that
- 7:45out of that cliche. What I've we haven't got out of
- 7:51that cliche. What's weird here is that she
- 7:55the doctor's all in surgical clothes and then the other lady
- 7:58can just come in in a fish covered clothes.
- 8:00You know it doesn't. They haven't got quite got the
- 8:03art of surgery down to it too. But it's of it's time to treat
- 8:08women like this. I had a conversation with
- 8:12somebody recently about problematic Doctor Who there's.
- 8:16Loads of. It yeah, but just how I can sort
- 8:19of accept it as a historical document rather than, you know,
- 8:24something that could be OK now are you all right with this
- 8:26stuff like, you know, like. Yeah, I'm fine with it.
- 8:29Like I don't like the views don't necessarily represent my
- 8:33own and it's it isn't a historical document of the times
- 8:35I lived in for the Christmas episode of Too Hot for TV, which
- 8:38will be coming out as we record this in a few days time.
- 8:41But we'll probably be out about 6 months will be 6 months ago by
- 8:45the time this comes out. We did.
- 8:47All right, man, what a bitch that.
- 8:50Was not a slight to you. That was not a slight we did
- 8:56mean. They brought your brothers out?
- 8:57Yeah. I won't wait to hear that we did
- 9:00Curse of the Daleks, the stage play from the 60s and in that. 7
- 9:06keys no. No Curse of the Daleks, not 7
- 9:08keys. I don't know much about that
- 9:10one, so. It's Daleks and only stage play
- 9:13that came out in the 1965 for Christmas at the Wyndham Theatre
- 9:16for one month and Big Finish adapted it.
- 9:19And in that, written by David Whittaker and Terry Nation, it's
- 9:23in the future and they explicitly say this, that it's
- 9:26post feminism, where feminism and the women's Lib, as they
- 9:29used to call it, happened and then there's no need for it
- 9:32anymore, so women revert back to type.
- 9:37Yes. It's bloody dreadful.
- 9:40Post feminism. Yeah, I mean, they don't call it
- 9:43that, but that is that is exactly how their feature is
- 9:46described. God bless the 60s.
- 9:49Yeah, Jesus. Christ.
- 9:51Wild time. Oh my word, they've reverted to
- 9:55time. Yeah.
- 9:56By reverted to type, I'm sort of paraphrasing that I don't mean
- 9:59that that's what women should refer to.
- 10:01I mean, that's what either Whittaker or Nation thought.
- 10:04I have always got a boner for another episode of two off
- 10:07series. I'm.
- 10:08Salivating for that one now, which was brought out 5 1/2
- 10:12months ago. Sorry guys.
- 10:13You can go and find it though. This scene in the original Trout
- 10:20and sort of running rings around first.
- 10:22Yeah, it's glorious and it's what's great about it is Trout
- 10:27has been a bit over the top in Power of the Daleks and in the
- 10:30Highlanders. I think he sees Joseph 1st and
- 10:33before he's like, I just can't top that.
- 10:36I'm going to have to play. It's for real.
- 10:37And then Morris Barry, the next story in the moon base goes, no,
- 10:40no more of this mate. You're.
- 10:43Going to play the Doctor as a serious guy.
- 10:45He never quite gets there, does he?
- 10:47But he takes it seriously, even when he's having fun.
- 10:49What is that coming out of Zaroff's ass there?
- 10:52That that's his octopus. He keeps it in his bum hole.
- 11:01Oh, here we go, we've got our stock Irish character.
- 11:05Yeah, I'm not sure that person's ever been to Ireland.
- 11:07Sean and Jacko, who we never do. We learn where he's from.
- 11:11No. But let's say it is nice to have
- 11:17some different accents of the. Show exactly?
- 11:18Do you remember when this episode was recovered?
- 11:22Yeah, I do. What did it come out on?
- 11:25So it so this and Galaxy Four were recovered at the same time.
- 11:29Galaxy 4 shows up on the Aztec Special Edition of course, and
- 11:35then this is the last classic series DVD to be released in
- 11:41that sort of original two way entertainment.
- 11:43Oh, is that the 1:00 I've got just over there?
- 11:44The one you've got just over there and it took ages to come
- 11:46out it this leaked onto YouTube for years before and it took
- 11:50ages to come out. And it came out with they've
- 11:52commissioned an animation then cancelled it.
- 11:55And then it came out with the world's most basic Recon And the
- 11:59BBC were like, you can't add new images, you can't move anything
- 12:02out of order, you can't use the title sequence, only the telly
- 12:04snaps. I don't know.
- 12:06They just want it to be most, the most basic thing that's
- 12:08possible. So yeah, that's what you got.
- 12:11Wow. Actually, do you know, it says
- 12:13something about how I used to consider this story that when
- 12:18Mark moved in here and we had two entire DVD collections, so
- 12:22one had to go up in the loft. The only thing that I didn't
- 12:25have a double of, I didn't buy the Underwater Menace DVD.
- 12:28He did. It came out so long afterwards.
- 12:31But I had seen it. I'd seen the episode.
- 12:34Yeah, it was on YouTube for years.
- 12:35Oh, it'd be like Dailymotion. It was unrestored, but it was
- 12:39like it was the only way you could see it.
- 12:42But it was like, I remember it's one of the few, most of the
- 12:45classic range of DVDs. I'd wait till they were about a
- 12:48fiver because you know they'd show up on Amazon at like 1499
- 12:51and within a year they'd be a fiver.
- 12:53And that is the that and the Aztec special edition are pretty
- 12:57much the only ones I bought brand.
- 12:58New. Just because you want to see the
- 12:59new stuff. Makes sense.
- 13:01That makes sense. I don't know why he looks like a
- 13:05zombie, That scientist. I mean, if you lived
- 13:08underground, you'd look like that as.
- 13:09Well, the original didn't look anything like that.
- 13:13It's a bit of a strange drawing of a face, but.
- 13:15Yeah, but they're just trying to.
- 13:17How many arms? Because you know the mist of
- 13:19tickle arms. That I think.
- 13:20I think the arms look better in this.
- 13:23I mean, I'm not. I suppose that arm would go down
- 13:28to his knee. It's all a bit.
- 13:30It's all a bit wild blue Yonder, isn't it?
- 13:32Oh well, done keeping. It relevant.
- 13:35Great. One of those biscuits yeah come
- 13:37on this is good podcasting, isn't it?
- 13:38Listening to me in biscuits, that's.
- 13:40That's the fun of watching it on the sofa, you know?
- 13:42Yeah, but. This.
- 13:43You're getting a real experience.
- 13:44What biscuits have we got? Oh, Marks and Spencer's are.
- 13:47You, you're having a guest coming all out.
- 13:51Dylan's coming. He's got some chocolate chunk
- 13:55cookie selection. Oh, I've been called a chocolate
- 13:57chunk cookie on the occasion. Sorry guys, I know this might be
- 14:02a bit noisy, but we'll get out of it I.
- 14:05Mean throw one my way, please. Yes, I can.
- 14:08Thank you. Hang on.
- 14:10Thank you. Which one you go?
- 14:12Could you make more noise than that?
- 14:15Oh, that looks very chunky. I'm actually sabotaging your
- 14:17podcaster. People, people are here for
- 14:20this. It looks like it's got lots of
- 14:23chocolate to this so. Guys, if you hear the wrapping
- 14:27again, it's because we've gone in for seconds and thirds, OK?
- 14:30What do you think Professor Zara's favorite biscuit is?
- 14:40It's got to be something unusual.
- 14:42Oh yeah, those new custard creams with jam in them, have
- 14:46you seen them? Creams with jamming.
- 14:47Yeah, I've got one in the other room.
- 14:48I'll give you one later. Dirty bitch, as I promise.
- 14:54Yeah, I thought, oh, he's a bit of hobnob man.
- 14:59I just think he likes a bit basic but strong.
- 15:03Trouton's a jammy Dodger. Oh yeah, Polly.
- 15:07Oh, like AV News world? Oh yeah.
- 15:10Yeah, Jamie. Jamie's from times before.
- 15:13Big rolls. He just eats horseshit with
- 15:16established and Ben is just a straight digestive.
- 15:20Yeah, yeah, yeah, plain and simple.
- 15:23Covering the big topic here guys.
- 15:24Do you think drawing again is back to semblance of normality?
- 15:30Do you think that Polly and Ben worked?
- 15:34Because I think there's a point where the producers sort of give
- 15:38up on them a bit. I think, sorry, just doing
- 15:44biscuit. I think they do.
- 15:47I think they're the sort of archetypal companion in a way.
- 15:50They have kids from modern day Earth as it was them.
- 15:53I think there's so much more to be done with them and they're
- 15:55just sort of dropped in favour of Fraser Hines.
- 16:01I think I would have preferred Ben and Polly to, as much as I
- 16:03like Jamie, to Jamie and Victoria.
- 16:05If I had to choose Jamie and Victoria over, I would choose
- 16:08Ben and Polly. It's a weird shift though to go
- 16:10from 2 contemporary companions to two historical companions.
- 16:14Yeah, you wouldn't get it now, would you?
- 16:16I've sort of got into it in some depth in some other stories
- 16:19where Jamie starts in about two or three stories where he's
- 16:24like, well, what's that? A great flying Beastie and all
- 16:26of this, and then you get some assignment.
- 16:28He just yeah, accepts everything.
- 16:31He has to, because Victoria's the newbie by that point, isn't
- 16:34she? Yeah.
- 16:34That's true. That is true.
- 16:36She's the historical idiot. All of this stuff in the caves,
- 16:40all of this stuff mining, is any of this actually needed?
- 16:46I know they're needed later on, Jacko and Sean, I need later on
- 16:49to cause the revolt with the fish people, but that does feel
- 16:54like it is. Is any of it needed?
- 16:57You chose this all right. Yeah, I mean, it's all the the
- 17:04thing about this script is it's it's enjoyable enough guff, but
- 17:11it's as we said before, pulpit. It's that type of writer who
- 17:16doesn't think the viewers of science fiction or children or
- 17:21if Doctor Who are intelligent enough to warrant putting too
- 17:25much detail and logic into into the script.
- 17:29They say about Jeffrey Orman special Features that he was the
- 17:33writer that dipped his toes into every show, every genre, and he
- 17:37never really had a house style. I don't think you need to be
- 17:41told that because all you got to do is watch The Underwater
- 17:43Menace, which is basically doing every type of Doctor Who story.
- 17:47I wonder what else he wrote. He was born in 1904.
- 17:51Fucking hell. And died in 1978.
- 17:55So he hasn't got a myth maker's tape, no.
- 17:59What else was he involved in then?
- 18:01Well, I can tell. You this this is the other type
- 18:03of podcasting I hate is as you do the research that's.
- 18:07Fucking lazy, isn't it? I think.
- 18:10Well, according to his IMDb, this might actually be one of
- 18:12the last things he wrote. Oh, bless him, he did.
- 18:15What a way to go out. What a curtain call.
- 18:17But you know, he's written loads.
- 18:18But if he like his first credit, it's in 1936.
- 18:23What for telly for? Film.
- 18:27It was called Sunshine Ahead. Clearly he wasn't talking about
- 18:31this. What TV did he do?
- 18:33So he does nothing but films up until Hold the Line Please call
- 18:39it. He does nothing but films all
- 18:41through the 30s, forties, 50s. So he's quite an old man when
- 18:47he's right. Yeah, yeah, he's, he's towards
- 18:49it. And then he gets into telly.
- 18:51In the late 50s he writes for Ivanhoe, Interpol, calling
- 18:56whatever that is, The Avengers, No Place, no hiding Place,
- 19:00Doctor Who. And his final credit, again on
- 19:02IMDb, is a film called The Long Jewel.
- 19:06And join us next time for the Geoffrey Warren Podcast, where
- 19:09we'll be going through the career of Doctor.
- 19:11Who's now IMDb? Yeah, it's very useful.
- 19:14It's useful. It's not always right, though.
- 19:15It's not always complete. Wouldn't have guessed that an
- 19:17old git had written this script. No, because it does skip along.
- 19:21It's like, you know, if you just told me somebody old wrote the
- 19:24massacre or something like that, I'll just say, all right, fair
- 19:27enough. I Do you always think of the
- 19:31writers of classic Doctor Who in the 60s as impossibly old.
- 19:35Because have you seen Pip and Jane Baker when they were right
- 19:38at the Doctor Who? In the 80s, yeah, they were a
- 19:40bit. They're a bit past their best,
- 19:42but like, you know, they all smoke pipes and drink whiskey
- 19:45for breakfast. That's my image of the it's.
- 19:48Just Robert Holmes. Yeah, he put it on his gold
- 19:51blade Well. Didn't Terence Dick say that
- 19:53when Barry Letts took over at about midday, he was like, so
- 19:57are we going to the are we going to the bar now?
- 19:59And Barry was like, no. And it's because his
- 20:01predecessor, Derek Sherwin and Peter Brian.
- 20:04Peter Bright was like. Yeah, but they just, they'd hit
- 20:07the bar midday and Terence Dix was like, oh, fantastic.
- 20:11I hated doing that, but he felt like he had to do it because
- 20:14that's what they did. But it was sort of the culture.
- 20:16Back then, I can tell you what Terence Dix used to drink as
- 20:18well, because there's a memo very thick.
- 20:26There's a memo that he wrote to Bob Baker and Dave Martin full
- 20:29of expletives, and he says I'm going to need a large glass of
- 20:34Macom at the BBC bar. It's.
- 20:37That type of wine. I guess it is, yeah.
- 20:39Just doing my research live. Oh no.
- 20:41Macron villages. No, we sell it in the shop.
- 20:43What is it? Yeah, I think it's a white.
- 20:46It's a it's a city in France. Are you Googling again?
- 20:50Yeah, I'm Googling. Yeah, it's a white.
- 20:53I'm not a white wine drinker, but.
- 20:55They've run. That's interesting.
- 20:59I mean, that's not interesting, but it's the culture's quite
- 21:01interesting. My dad worked in works in
- 21:04advertising and in the 80s and 90s they all went down to the
- 21:10pub at lunchtime. And when I first, I did a lot of
- 21:13temping in my offices and not my late teens and it was still the
- 21:17culture then that's a couple of times of the week you go to the
- 21:20pub at lunchtime and. After, well, you would.
- 21:22Yeah, you'd have two or three pints.
- 21:24It's now if I had two or three pints at midday, I would not get
- 21:28anything done for the rest of the day.
- 21:30Well, so, you know, like it's no great secret whether you do work
- 21:34in television now. It's no great secret.
- 21:36It's not anymore. So it's a very small audience.
- 21:42I'm assuming that isn't the culture now.
- 21:44It's absolutely not the culture and in fact you would be quite
- 21:48heavily reprimanded if you and. Yet what they say about the 70s
- 21:52is because it was so alcohol fuelled, like fantastically
- 21:56memorable television sprung from that.
- 21:58Yeah, there's. I mean whether this is true or
- 22:02not, but legend would have it that Randall and Hopkirk
- 22:05deceased. You can tell what what point the
- 22:08lunch break was in the recording of an episode because they shoot
- 22:10an. Episode.
- 22:12Well, like they shoot them over like a day, a bit like Doctor
- 22:14Who, but they have a bit longer. But the lunch break in the
- 22:18middle of the day recordedly if you.
- 22:19Want no longer walking? In a straight.
- 22:21Line, yeah. But no, you wouldn't do it now,
- 22:23just like you wouldn't do it in any.
- 22:24I mean, I'm sure it does happen in some jobs, but.
- 22:27Maybe people say Tom Baker's a fabulous eccentric, but I just
- 22:30think he was drunk. I mean, it's probably a bit of
- 22:32both. I Having said that, I've worked
- 22:35abroad and in France. They still have a glass of wine
- 22:40with their lunch when they work. But also I feel like Britain is
- 22:43a nation of excessiveness and when it comes to alcohol, like
- 22:46we're very much a binge booze culture.
- 22:49In France, they'll have their glass of wine at lunchtime and
- 22:51then they'll have one when they finish work.
- 22:54Whereas in the UK we're like, how many pints can you get in an
- 22:57hour? It's like for keeping, I'm not
- 23:00casting any aspersions on you when I say this, all right, but
- 23:03it's like when you're single after being in a relationship
- 23:06for a long time. Well you basically fuck 100 guys
- 23:10in a week. All girls wherever is your
- 23:11preference. Or other.
- 23:14Or other. Well quite yeah.
- 23:16Animals you know where fish people.
- 23:19I had a. Few fish people.
- 23:20I had a few fishy people at that time.
- 23:25All gay men are fishing. I'm telling you, I've never
- 23:28looked at a tinner tuna in the same way again.
- 23:30Oh, it's. Going to say something beyond
- 23:33inappropriate then. I won't, but you know, we just
- 23:37somehow managed to bring that back round the underwater.
- 23:39Menace. What do you think of the
- 23:40underwater menace? Did you see that sequence a
- 23:42second ago where the Doctor's trying to explain that if you
- 23:46raise the sea level, the whole of Atlantis is going to explode?
- 23:50In the original, it's a little desk with a Bunsen burner on it
- 23:54and a tiny pot. In the animation, it's this
- 23:56huge. I can never say this word
- 23:58properly. Brazier.
- 24:00Isn't it Brazier? Not Brazier?
- 24:02No, not Brazier. That's something different.
- 24:04It's this huge Brazier. Well, massive exploding part.
- 24:08I love animation. It's great.
- 24:10I mean, even this of Jamie hanging over the Cliff now, I
- 24:13mean, it's not the most exciting thing in the world, but it would
- 24:15have been just Jamie rubbing against himself.
- 24:17But a bit of scenery. Have a light roll.
- 24:20Yeah. Oh, he looks terrified.
- 24:25He's just he almost fell to his death.
- 24:27He wore a weighted skirt, you know.
- 24:29Oh no. In location.
- 24:30Very famous story of him climbing up the the.
- 24:34What's it called? Are you?
- 24:35Talking about the mine, Rubber rocks again.
- 24:36No, I'm talking about the helicopter.
- 24:38In the evasion. Yeah, because the the updraft
- 24:41would have, you must know that story I would love to see
- 24:44because that's what the Queen did when she was out in public.
- 24:47Just do it. On a windy day to stop a skirt
- 24:49blowing. Oh.
- 24:50I thought you were saying how a skirt did blow up.
- 24:51No, no, you never saw the Queen's.
- 24:53Snatch upstairs. You watch your mouth, all right?
- 24:56The Queen's Snatch, of course, was my favorite TV show growing
- 24:59up. It's like the Queen's nose, but
- 25:03you rubbed something else Do. You know I can't watch that.
- 25:07What's it called? The Crown.
- 25:09No, the Crown. Oh I love the Crown, but the
- 25:11last series I stopped watching. Oh no, The Crown's great.
- 25:14It's got everybody that's been in Doctor Who, isn't it?
- 25:16It's got. Everybody who's anybody in it.
- 25:18Matthew Smith in US. Has.
- 25:21He Matt Smith plays Prince Charles, not Prince Charles,
- 25:23Prince Philip. Everybody else Smith.
- 25:25Who the hell was Matthew Smith? Matthew Smith is who he was
- 25:28credited as. How is that going to entice me
- 25:30to watch anything that Matt Smith's in it?
- 25:32Matt Smith was credited as Matthew Smith on the film
- 25:35Terminator Genesis, which he appears in.
- 25:37Was that any good that? Was terrible.
- 25:40Fucking dreadful. I've since learnt today that
- 25:43Dinner is a fan of Terminator movies and it's spin off media.
- 25:46I am indeed. Anybody wish to talk about that
- 25:48on Too Hot for TV next year? Get in touch.
- 25:50Yeah, yeah, get. In touch.
- 25:53I can't even notice we're not talking about the underwater
- 25:56minister Everton. 'S got a lovely little hat on
- 25:58now as well. We're all done.
- 25:59Oh, you know, I mean, do we ever really talk about what's going
- 26:01on? At some point we're still going
- 26:02to do Hell Bent and Heaven Sent, aren't we?
- 26:04And one of those is just the same thing again and again.
- 26:07And. Again, that's going to be tough.
- 26:08I'm sure we'll find a way. Well, you told me.
- 26:11You promised me a heart wrenching story about where you
- 26:13were in your life. Yeah, well, you'll get that when
- 26:15we do. It Where were you in your life
- 26:17when you first saw the underwater menace, I mean.
- 26:21I was probably about 14, so I was probably in between episodes
- 26:25of the reconstruction of Underwater Menace, wanking
- 26:28myself silly in my bedroom. It's true.
- 26:36I. Can't be.
- 26:39I'm going to ask you this in the forecast.
- 26:41Did you have a rag? Did I have a rag?
- 26:45No, I did not hear a change in the back of the cupboard.
- 26:48It was stiff as. A.
- 26:48Have you still got them? My mom found them and she went
- 26:53on fruit out that stiff period. I admit everything on this.
- 27:01Use tissue paper, flush it down the toilet.
- 27:04I don't know anyone's wanked through the underwater menace,
- 27:06am I honest? Someone's done everything that's
- 27:09true. I bet if you, I bet if I googled
- 27:11it now. Jeremy Bentham's there.
- 27:14If you like Chubbies, when Lolum's on the screen, you're in
- 27:17a lot of luck. He's in a grass skirt most of
- 27:20the time. Yeah.
- 27:22Oh my. Oh, I've never known an episode.
- 27:25Let's go so off. The round, I'm here for it.
- 27:30This is what we do now. We don't do countries on the
- 27:32actual thing we just talk about. Talk about stuff.
- 27:34Yeah, that's basically what podcasting is.
- 27:36Yeah, exactly. The tangents are the best here.
- 27:39You know the on the timelash boys?
- 27:40I do. I'll tell you a really funny
- 27:42story. I was doing Dalek War the other
- 27:44day and I kept saying that Mark Donaldson plays out We Broke and
- 27:49it's Mark McDonald. So I had to publicly say I'm
- 27:53really sorry. And I realised at the end of the
- 27:56episode I went oh God. I've been crediting a member on
- 27:59The Time Rush for being an actor in Dalek.
- 28:01War Nah. Did you know that Mark Donaldson
- 28:04isn't a Doctor Who's been off? One of his mates illustrated the
- 28:09comics for Doctor Who Adventures and there's a character in one
- 28:13of them based on Mark Donaldson. Yeah.
- 28:16Legendary. You send me a picture of that
- 28:18you got. It I don't have it, but I'm sure
- 28:20I can ask him. Oh, he's a fabulous fellow,
- 28:22Mark. He's a lovely, lovely man.
- 28:24I wonder what he thinks of the underwater menace.
- 28:26I'm sure he loves it, I'm sure it's on record and on the time
- 28:29last somewhere. I wonder what one ever would you
- 28:31pair this up with in the new series?
- 28:34Oh, under the Lake. Under the lake or the doctor's
- 28:37daughter. Because fish people.
- 28:39Oh Jesus Christ. Oh, it ended it.
- 28:42Ended. There he is, Zaraf, hobbling
- 28:45towards the screen. I think because, you know, we
- 28:49spent 2 1/2 minutes of that episode talking about the
- 28:52underwater, that is. Sometimes 2 1/2 minutes is all
- 28:54you need, Jeff. As a I only need 40 seconds, I
- 28:59just would like you before we add episode 2 to please tell us
- 29:02where we are in an underwater menace today.
- 29:04What's been occurring? Well, they've gone down to
- 29:06Atlantis. Polly was nearly turned into a
- 29:08fish. They've discovered what food
- 29:11that they they eat, which is plankton.
- 29:14Zarof is trying to raise the water levels.
- 29:17Ando is their God. The Doctor thinks Zarof is mad.
- 29:23It's very succinctly dumb. Thank you very much.
- 29:25I've. I've seen this a couple of
- 29:27times. I've watched this animation
- 29:28three times since it came out and this is the 4th.
- 29:31Do you know, can I say I've realised doing these podcasts
- 29:36when I'm talking to certain people, I'll take on like the
- 29:40the pace that they talk. I've started laughing like you.
- 29:44Have you noticed? I haven't, but I'll look at it.
- 29:47I just laughed the second guy and I thought that's just
- 29:49exactly what he sounds like when he's laughing.
- 29:51We're chameleonic. I am I am in a WhatsApp group
- 29:56with Mark Donaldson and Ben Verth, both from Scotland, and
- 30:01the Police Box boys, all from Scotland.
- 30:03To think that I have filthy. And every now and then I find
- 30:08myself about to type the word I like ayi, like a Scottish
- 30:12person, and I have to stop myself.
- 30:14I'll be like a it's a load of old shite.
- 30:16And then I'm like, no, Dylan, you don't speak like that.
- 30:18It's a load of old shit. The Oh, God, I'm so bad with
- 30:23names. You know, the police box,
- 30:24fellas. You know what?
- 30:26The guy who does all the intros and all of that with the boxes?
- 30:29Yeah, man, 1 is really hot. Two.
- 30:33Sorry, Lee, if you were listening to this.
- 30:35Two. I mean, he asks me a message.
- 30:38He sends me a message about arranging a recording.
- 30:41Yeah. And I'll give him an answer and
- 30:43I'll get paragraphs of this insanely weird messages being
- 30:49quirky and funny as hell. I think we might be getting
- 30:52married, you know? He's a very funny cat.
- 30:55Very funny. Terrible flurs.
- 30:56What? On that note, let's jump into
- 31:00episode 3. We've got some fish people,
- 31:01action an. Episode I can't wait but not the
- 31:04fish people you're expecting let's.
- 31:06Find out.
