Latest / 360 with Katie Woolf / Katherine Mayor Lis Clark says 250 homes will get to take part in a recycling trial over the next six months
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Some pretty exciting news for Catherine residents with a six
- 0:03Speaker 1: month trial being launched of recycling. So while some Darwin
- 0:07Speaker 1: residents obviously take recycling for granted, we know that it's
- 0:10Speaker 1: available to us, it's not available to other regional parts
- 0:14Speaker 1: of the Northern Territory and certainly to more remote parts
- 0:16Speaker 1: of the Northern Territory due to those high transport costs
- 0:19Speaker 1: and other barriers. Now joining me on the line to
- 0:22Speaker 1: tell us a little bit more about this trial is
- 0:25Speaker 1: the Mayor Liz Clark. Good morning to you, Liz.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I have a good morning Katie and good morning listeners.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Thanks so much for your time this morning. Liz, tell
- 0:34Speaker 1: us how's this trial? What sparked the trial? Firstly, we have.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Had a lot of residents asking the Council to do
- 0:43Speaker 2: do recycling, particularly if they come from areas in other
- 0:47Speaker 2: parts of Australia where recycling is you know, as part
- 0:50Speaker 2: of everyday life. But as you pointed out, it is
- 0:55Speaker 2: very expensive in the North to do recycling and you know,
- 0:59Speaker 2: to you know that we do have to. We are
- 1:02Speaker 2: trialing it to see what the costs are involved and
- 1:07Speaker 2: you know, get people into the habit of recycling.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Liz, how's it going to work for the residents of Catherine.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Okay, well, the residents that we've got a certain area
- 1:18Speaker 2: in Cathereraniese that is going to that they'll be given
- 1:22Speaker 2: a bin with also with the instructions of what goes,
- 1:27Speaker 2: what can and can't go into the bin. It will
- 1:30Speaker 2: be audited and monitored regularly. It will be picked up
- 1:34Speaker 2: by empty bins. They will take it back to their
- 1:39Speaker 2: depot reef and do the sorting out and then a
- 1:44Speaker 2: certain you know, whatever is not being able to use
- 1:47Speaker 2: will go to Darwin.
- 1:49Speaker 1: And so how so how have you sort of determined
- 1:52Speaker 1: which area to trial and and you know which times
- 1:56Speaker 1: are going to be able to take part.
- 2:00Speaker 2: We have an area in Catrineas so it's like in
- 2:02Speaker 2: a circle, so it's easier for the track to go around.
- 2:05Speaker 2: So we've got I can name the streets we've got.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So we've got Gregory Circuit, Patterson Circuit, Cyprus Street, Casuarina Street,
- 2:15Speaker 2: Cormac Street, Bradshaw Crescent, hand Or Street in Skip Crescent
- 2:20Speaker 2: and Stacey Road. And that's two hundred and fifty houses
- 2:25Speaker 2: in that area. So and the trial starts on the
- 2:29Speaker 2: we'll be starting on the twenty first of June, the
- 2:32Speaker 2: bins will be empty fortnightly. So it's a six month
- 2:37Speaker 2: trial to see how, you know, how residents respond, how
- 2:41Speaker 2: well they're going to learn how to recycle. So it's
- 2:45Speaker 2: an exciting time for us because we do recycle, you know,
- 2:50Speaker 2: we do recycle quite a few other things, but this
- 2:54Speaker 2: will be coming straight from the home instead of everyone
- 2:57Speaker 2: putting everything into one bin.
- 2:58Speaker 1: And something that I guess for us in Dahom we
- 3:01Speaker 1: take for granted, Liz, because we think, all right, well
- 3:03Speaker 1: we can you know, put that in the recycling and
- 3:05Speaker 1: you separate everything. Whereas for you guys in Catherine, there's
- 3:08Speaker 1: probably people listening around other parts of the territory this
- 3:12Speaker 1: morning thinking, oh, I didn't realize that they don't actually
- 3:15Speaker 1: have the capacity to do that or the ability to
- 3:17Speaker 1: do that.
- 3:19Speaker 2: No, it has always been an issue and again it's
- 3:22Speaker 2: a cost factor across this area of the territory, you know.
- 3:29Speaker 2: And so yeah, we're really really happy to trial this
- 3:34Speaker 2: and if it's successful, of course, then we will look
- 3:37Speaker 2: at making it more permanent, but we have a lot
- 3:41Speaker 2: of work to do before that happens. So we've got
- 3:44Speaker 2: six months of that trial happening, and that'll give us
- 3:48Speaker 2: also gives us an idea of how much we save
- 3:52Speaker 2: because our waste management facilities probably got about ten years
- 3:56Speaker 2: of life left and if we can save a bit
- 3:59Speaker 2: more going into landfill, it would be it would be wonderful.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yeah, right, so it could be long term a good
- 4:05Speaker 1: decision to make.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Oh absolutely, It'll like if this is successful, then you know,
- 4:13Speaker 2: then we can roll it out right across our community
- 4:16Speaker 2: and and again sable that landfill. Yeah that I think
- 4:21Speaker 2: that that's the end game anyway.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and Liz, what will you sort of what will
- 4:25Speaker 1: you be looking at to deem whether it is or
- 4:28Speaker 1: isn't a successful trial.
- 4:31Speaker 2: There will be data and as I said, the bins
- 4:34Speaker 2: are going to be like the bins, and what's in
- 4:36Speaker 2: the truck will be audited on a regular basis, and
- 4:40Speaker 2: it will you know, they'll be collecting all of this
- 4:43Speaker 2: data to determine because the other thing is too that
- 4:46Speaker 2: if someone does the wrong thing and puts a contaminant
- 4:48Speaker 2: in that bin, then of course it can't be recycled.
- 4:52Speaker 2: So you know, it is a huge educational learning curve
- 4:57Speaker 2: for a lot of residents. But we're hoping people seem
- 5:01Speaker 2: to be keen, so you know, we're really excited that
- 5:05Speaker 2: it is going ahead and hopefully it will continue in
- 5:09Speaker 2: the future.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And with the educating of those residents. Is that something
- 5:13Speaker 1: that the council is doing sort of with those that
- 5:15Speaker 1: are taking part in the trial, going out and saying
- 5:17Speaker 1: to them, look, these are the things that you can
- 5:19Speaker 1: put in there, this is what you're going to have
- 5:20Speaker 1: to do, all those types of dos and don'ts.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, there'll be and as well they'll be given
- 5:28Speaker 2: a flyer as well that has, you know, has a
- 5:32Speaker 2: picture of all the different things that they can put
- 5:36Speaker 2: in the bin and what can't go in the bin. Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 2: So yes, so all of those things will be available
- 5:42Speaker 2: to the people that are in the trial.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Liz, before I let you go, I understand, and please
- 5:47Speaker 1: correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that the
- 5:49Speaker 1: state funeral for fey Miller is happening this Friday. Is
- 5:54Speaker 1: that correct?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yes? Absolutely, It starts at ten thirty the Anglican Church
- 6:01Speaker 2: in meth Street. Yes, and it's this this this Friday.
- 6:05Speaker 2: And in Catherine, we're having a memorial service for her
- 6:09Speaker 2: out at the Catherine out Back. A Catherine Outback are
- 6:15Speaker 2: hosting on the second of June.
- 6:17Speaker 1: Oh, that is beautiful to hear that it'll be at
- 6:19Speaker 1: five point thirty. Yeah, I mean, I think that everybody
- 6:22Speaker 1: would agree that Faye was an incredible woman, an incredible
- 6:26Speaker 1: advocate for Catherine and indeed the whole of the Northern Territory.
- 6:29Speaker 1: And I have no doubt that you guys will be
- 6:32Speaker 1: remembering her very fondly.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Absolutely, she was a very colorful woman. And yes, and
- 6:39Speaker 2: she did a lot of work for the particularly in tourism,
- 6:42Speaker 2: you know, trying to get Catherine out up there for
- 6:45Speaker 2: you know, for all over Australia.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I know that there will be plenty of
- 6:50Speaker 1: people who are keen to head along to that state
- 6:53Speaker 1: funeral to pay their respects. She touched a lot of
- 6:56Speaker 1: lives in the territory. Thank you so much, Liz for
- 7:00Speaker 1: time this morning. I really appreciate you having a chat
- 7:02Speaker 1: with us.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Okay, thank you for having me.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Thank you
