- 0:51Speaker 1: A Hey, y'all, welcome to this week's show. Pick up
- 1:02where we left off last week. We'll be talking about
- 1:04the sacraments. We're at least going to talk about baptism today.
- 1:09That's the first sacrament, it's the gateway. It's you know,
- 1:15if you don't get baptized, you can't receive any of
- 1:18the other sacraments. Well, I guess you could be married,
- 1:21but you can, you know, it wouldn't be necessarily a
- 1:26Catholic marriage. Catholic marriage should really be between two baptized Christians. Now,
- 1:32there are special occasions, special circumstances where one can marry
- 1:38someone of another faith, you know, Jewish or Muslim or
- 1:42even atheist, I suppose, but Catholic still has to go
- 1:46through marriage counseling, and the non Catholic spouse has to
- 1:51agree not to use contraception or abortion obviously, and that
- 1:56the children will be raised Catholic. So it's really not
- 2:01ideal and pretty rare at least if people care enough
- 2:04to go through the right process. But yeah, you got
- 2:08to be baptized for you confirm. You gotta be baptized
- 2:10before you can receive the Eucharist. You know, Jesus said
- 2:13unless you're born again and water in the blood, you know,
- 2:17water being baptism, you're not saved. And for centuries the
- 2:23church taught that only baptized people went to heaven. And
- 2:27then through some actual revelations and such as a Blessed
- 2:31Virgin Mary and such as that, and theologians really looking
- 2:35at it, they came to the clusion that, you know,
- 2:38unbaptized children, especially those that die in infancy or before,
- 2:46are under the special protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
- 2:49and would have been baptized had they been informed or
- 2:54had their parents had the chance to baptize them, and
- 2:56they are in heaven. We don't believe necessary in limbo
- 3:01for unbaptized infants anymore. That was church teaching for a
- 3:05very long time. But thank god, the Blessed Virgin Mary
- 3:12has set as straight on that one, because very troubling
- 3:18to think that, you know, one's unbaptized infant wouldn't be
- 3:22waiting for them in heaven, and they are, in fact,
- 3:25they're under the special care of the Mother of God.
- 3:28So what more could you ask for? Right? So all right,
- 3:31we'll start out though with a couple of questions and
- 3:34answers from radio replies, and this is the old question,
- 3:41you know. I think Venerable Fulton scene said it the
- 3:45best when he said, if Jesus wasn't God but just
- 3:50a very good man, a philosopher or whatever, he was
- 3:54actually a very evil man because he was a blasphemer
- 3:57who led people astray. You can't have it both ways,
- 4:00you know, Jesus and the Buddha are not the same.
- 4:04Well anyway, this person says, could we not say that
- 4:08Christ was a sincere humanitarian? And the answer he was sincere.
- 4:14The priests, I mean, the priests are answering the question
- 4:16here he was sincere. He was not a mere humanitarian.
- 4:21The humanitarian is merely kind to his fellow men from
- 4:25motives of human and natural sympathy, not from motives of religion.
- 4:29Saint Paul tells us the uselessness of the humanitarianism from
- 4:35the religious point of view, and he writes, if I
- 4:37should distribute all my goods to feed the poor, I
- 4:41have not charity. It profiteth me nothing. First Corinthians thirteen three.
- 4:46Christ was essentially religious and not Christ was essentially religious
- 4:53and not merely humanitarian. He demanded that the love of
- 4:57God should be the motive for all our good world works,
- 5:00not the love of our fellow men for their own sakes,
- 5:03God being simply ignored. In that case, that person says,
- 5:08if Christ were aware of his divinity, why did he
- 5:11begin his ministry with doubt and temptation? And they answered,
- 5:16the temptation of Christ does not suggest that he doubted
- 5:19his divinity. His clear claim applies to show anything but
- 5:22doubt at perfect peace. Interiorly, he allowed an external temptation,
- 5:28or to teach us how to behave in similar occasions,
- 5:32Very true, very true had to debate with a ticket
- 5:36it as a Baptist a couple of weeks ago, and
- 5:39he said, because the Bible says all have sinned, that
- 5:43no one could live without sinning, And he totally denied
- 5:46the Blessed Virgin Mary's being without sin. And I pointed
- 5:51out that the Bible also says we're supposed to imitate Christ.
- 5:56And you said, Jesus did or sinned, so means we're
- 6:00not supposed to sin. And because Jesus supposed fully God
- 6:04and fully man, he showed that man can resist sin,
- 6:12that the Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived free from original
- 6:16sin and never had an actual sin throughout her life
- 6:18has been Christian tradition for two thousand years, and it
- 6:23makes a lot of sense if a Christians supposed to
- 6:25imittate Christ, the first Christian, the Mother of God, imitating
- 6:30her son, and especially through all the what she lived
- 6:35through would be very knowing because we actually have writings
- 6:40from the early Church about how devout and what an
- 6:42exemplary example she was for early Christians would have been
- 6:46free from sin, and also as the ark of the
- 6:51New Covenant. And I went through all this stuff and
- 6:53he actually eventually gave up. I don't know if I
- 6:56made a convert, but he actually pretty much had to
- 6:59admit that there is a really strong argument for the
- 7:03sinlessness of the West of Virgin Mary as an exception
- 7:07among people, you know, had to point out in the
- 7:11Old Testament there were at least two saints that were
- 7:14that did not suffer death. They were taken up bodily
- 7:18into heaven the wages of sin er death. So there
- 7:22were at least two people in the Old Testament who
- 7:24lived such sinless lives that they were taken up into
- 7:28heaven without experiencing death. You know, once you prove that,
- 7:33if you if you can convince someone that you know,
- 7:35the words of the Old Testament are true in the
- 7:37case of what Elijah and I can't remember Alicia. I
- 7:41can't remember, no, because one of the Leasha's bones, somebody,
- 7:46a dead man was laid in the grave of Licia's
- 7:49bones that he came back to life, so it wouldn't
- 7:51be Alicia. Okay, I'm confused. The names all sound all
- 7:54lots similar to me right now, But you can prove
- 7:57the possibility of you know, the blessed Virgin Mary is
- 8:05being taken bodily into heaven by the evidence of the
- 8:10Old Testament. What it comes down to, was she the
- 8:15first Christian? Yes she was. She was the very first
- 8:17person the Angel ever informed of what was going on.
- 8:21And was she a good Christian? Yes, according to all
- 8:24the writings of the Church. She was with the apostles
- 8:29at Pentecost, she received the fullness of the Holy Spirit,
- 8:32just as Saint Peter did. She was actually the spouse
- 8:35of the Holy Spirit. So it's even in deeper relationship.
- 8:39And then you know, basically said what evidence do you
- 8:42have of any sin she ever commended in her life?
- 8:45And they said, well, I don't have any. But you know,
- 8:47the Bible says all men of sin. But you know,
- 8:51it also says these two prophets were taken up into heaven.
- 8:54It also shows that Jesus is both fully human and
- 8:57fully God could resist temptation. Jesus said, you must be
- 9:02perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. Maybe there's a
- 9:06little something deeper and meaning here, a little nuanced. Let's
- 9:10sort through it. You know, for long they well, they
- 9:14don't have any evidence. I mean, they have bigotry and hatred.
- 9:18But if you if you can speak reasonably with them,
- 9:22if they will listen to reason, they have no reason
- 9:25to believe that. You know, West Virgin Mary was not
- 9:29always pure and free of sin the Old Testament, if
- 9:35someone you know unworthy touched it, they were struck dead.
- 9:39And Mary sark and the New Covenant. So anyway, things
- 9:45Protestants don't know. But sometimes you can get through with
- 9:48them to them, and well, they don't always admit it.
- 9:54So they said that Jesus allowed an external temptation or
- 9:59to te tach us how to behave On similar occasions,
- 10:03person continues, you cannot deny his word. The Father is
- 10:06greater than I and the answer I do not wish
- 10:09to do. So. Christ was at once God and man,
- 10:12and has created human nature. He had deliberately subjected himself
- 10:16to God's will. But since in him there was but
- 10:20one personality, he had to use the personal pronoun i,
- 10:24whether referring to his divinity or to his humanity. If
- 10:28he referred to his divinity, he was equal to the Father.
- 10:32As regards to his humanity, he was lesser than the Father.
- 10:36All such difficulties are solved by a correct notion of
- 10:38Christ as God made man, yet made man in such
- 10:42a way that he never ceased to be God. Had
- 10:44he ceased to be God, all the real value of
- 10:47his life and death for us would have been lost.
- 10:50Person asked would God be born as an infant? And
- 10:53the answer our speculation as to what would or would
- 10:58not be all nothing against the fact that he was
- 11:02born into this world as an infant. He could have
- 11:05become man in some other way, but granted that he
- 11:07wished to be born of the human nature, which was
- 11:10to be redeemed, he needed to be born of a
- 11:12human mother, and this necessitated his being born as an infant.
- 11:18Redemption was thus manifested in both sexes, even as both
- 11:22sexes cooperated in our fall, Mary replacing Eve and Christ
- 11:26replacing Adam. By this means also the son of God
- 11:30wasn't able to exemplify virtues at every stage of human life,
- 11:34from infancy to manhood. Another point, marys described as the
- 11:39new Eve, Eve was born without original sin. There's another correlation.
- 11:46Take you anyway, where is the divine wisdom in decreeing
- 11:52that Christ should be descended from three women of ill fame, Rahab,
- 11:57Tamar and Bestsheba? One an odd question, I had a
- 12:02friend named Tomorrow. By the way, it's a nice name.
- 12:04It means date, like date you eat, you know, from
- 12:08palm trees. Yeah? Really? Anyway, First, there is no more
- 12:13difficulty why Christ should descend from these more proximate centers
- 12:16than he should be descended from the sinful first parent. Secondly,
- 12:20the immediate source of Christ's human nature was purified from
- 12:24all inherited sin, Christ receiving a true human nature from
- 12:28Mary without the cooperation of a human father. Thirdly, the
- 12:31women you mentioned were not lawful wives, and there is
- 12:35a deep significant in the coming of redemption by them.
- 12:39The Jews regarded themselves as the lawful children of God
- 12:42and thought that redemption was to be confined to them
- 12:46yet they thought that they could not lose their inheritance
- 12:50behave as they might. Yet Christ, the actual Redeemer rejected
- 12:54the apparent lawful nation and established a church for all nations.
- 12:58The Jews did not recognize the ancestry from unexpected women.
- 13:04So redemption has been given to men by an unexpected church,
- 13:08illegitimate in Jewish eyes. All right, let's go on to
- 13:14Father Spiago and we shall discuss baptism. When we get
- 13:19a sip of water and adjust myself in the squeaky
- 13:22leather chair. Oh there we go. You know, I usually
- 13:30edit out extraneous noises and taking a sip of water,
- 13:33But then I remember, you know, russ Limbaugh never did.
- 13:38I'm sertainly not better than Russia Limball. He was the
- 13:41greatest of all time anyway. So we'll start with baptism,
- 13:48and Father Spargo says even heathen nations such as Egyptians, Greeks,
- 13:53and Romans made use of water to cleanse their souls
- 13:56and render them pleasing to the deity. The Jewish law
- 13:59and purification to cleanse from various legal uncleanliness uncleanlinesses Leviticus
- 14:07twelve through fifteen. Before the giving of the ten commandments,
- 14:11the people were to be sanctified and wash their garments.
- 14:14Exodus nineteen ten. John the Baptist baptized in the desert.
- 14:19Those who promised amended amendment of life to signify the
- 14:23remission of sins which they would gain by their penitential works.
- 14:28The baptism of Christ is of a different nature, but
- 14:31it has a transferring power, for it washes away sin
- 14:34and confers the gift of the Holy ghosts Matthew three eleven.
- 14:39This is what takes place at baptism. Water is poured
- 14:42on the head of the person to be baptized. At
- 14:45the same time the words appointed by Our Lord are repeated.
- 14:50The person is thereby cleansed from original sin and all
- 14:53other sins. He is gifted with a habitual and sanctifying
- 14:57grace and becomes a child of God and err Heaven
- 15:00and a member of the Church. At our baptism, much
- 15:04the same takes places at Our Lord's baptism. Like him,
- 15:08we have water port on our head and certain words
- 15:10are spoken. Specifically, I baptize thee in the name of
- 15:13the Father and the Son in the Holy Ghost or
- 15:15Holy Spirit. The Holy Ghost descends upon us, although not
- 15:19in the form of a dove. We are made temples
- 15:22of the holy ghosts and Dad with sanctifying grace. God
- 15:24the Father says, this is my beloved son, and whom
- 15:27I am well please. We are made children of God,
- 15:30and the heavens are open. We are made errors of immortality. Again,
- 15:34much the same takes place at our baptism. Is that
- 15:37the clean cleansing of Namon in fourth in four Kings,
- 15:46I'm getting all tongue tied here Kings five fourteen, Book four,
- 15:52How's that I got sorted out? We are washed with
- 15:55water and delivered from the leprosy of sin, both original
- 15:59and actual. So again, much the same place takes place
- 16:02in our baptism as at the passage of the Israelites
- 16:06through the Jordan one Corinthians ten II. We pass through
- 16:11the waters of baptism and the promised land, the Church
- 16:14of which we become members. Those on whom sanctifying grace
- 16:18has been bestowed are in virtue of that bestow children
- 16:25of God and heirs of Heaven. Only the baptized ties
- 16:28have the right to call God their father. Hence, in
- 16:32early times, the Lord's Prayer was not taught to the
- 16:34unbaptized that's okay. That's a really interesting point of Catholic history,
- 16:41of Christian history in general, and something that I don't
- 16:44think any Protestant even knows. For the first several hundred
- 16:48years of the Church, unbaptized people were not taught the
- 16:53Our Father. The Protestants seem to think the Bible like
- 16:58Jesus ascended to Hell and dropped the Bible in front
- 17:01of him. No, it took a good four hundred years
- 17:04for the Bible to be fully compiled and translated, and
- 17:09hundreds of years after for it to be widely disseminated
- 17:13because it had all be hand copied. So not only
- 17:18did they not have like no Christian, very few Christians
- 17:23had a copy of Matthew Mark, Luther, John okay, the
- 17:28four Gospels. And so when Jesus teaches the Our Father
- 17:32and the Bible, for gosh, the first five centuries, the
- 17:38first seven centuries of Christianity, if not the first thousand years,
- 17:44I mean, think about how long that is. America's been around,
- 17:46not even two hundred and fifty years. We're talking about
- 17:48thousand years. People did not pick up the Bible and read,
- 17:53you know, pray like this our Father, who are in heaven. No,
- 17:56they were told by a priest. The priest would read
- 18:00the Bible to them, or the priests had memorized that passage.
- 18:03If there was no Bible even available to the poor
- 18:07parish in the middle of nowhere, the priest was well
- 18:09trained through the oral tradition of the church to preach
- 18:14the Gospel. So for first few hundred years, only baptized
- 18:22people were taught the Our Father. It's like, you couldn't
- 18:25just go grab a Bible and read it. You had
- 18:26to be taught by a priest how to pray the
- 18:28Our Father. Catacumins, people who were not yet confirmed into
- 18:35the Catholic Church would come for the beginning of Mass.
- 18:40But and they'd hear the homily, and they'd hear the
- 18:42Gospel read and all that, right, but before the consecration
- 18:46of the host they had to leave. Yeah, that's right.
- 18:49If you weren't Catholic, you weren't even allowed to be
- 18:52in the church during the consecration administration of the Eucharist.
- 18:59Things have changed so much over time, and you know,
- 19:03for some in some ways for the better. I mean,
- 19:07you certainly want your well. First of all, a child
- 19:10should be baptized as soon as they're born, I mean
- 19:13as quickly as possible for their own good, to protect
- 19:16them from demonic influence, to fill them with the Holy Spirit.
- 19:19I mean, you know, and it's good. I think that
- 19:23children can be en mass or converts that have not
- 19:28yet been confirmed during the Eucharus. They get spiritual benefit
- 19:32from that. That's a good thing. But also we've lost
- 19:35a lot of the reverence because when literally anyone who
- 19:41wasn't confirmed had to get up and leave, there was
- 19:44a very clear message that something incredibly special is about
- 19:49to happen. And that's you know, Jesus Christ, body, blood,
- 19:54soul and divinity coming into that church. So anyway, let's see.
- 20:01And Father's farrago goes on to say, those on whom
- 20:05sanctifying grace has been bestowed are in virtue of that
- 20:09bestow children of God and heirs of heaven. Only the
- 20:12baptized have the right to call God their father. Hence,
- 20:16in early time, the Lord's Prayer was not taught the unbaptized.
- 20:19Saint Louis of France used to say, I think more
- 20:22of the private chapel where I was baptized than of
- 20:24the cathedral of Reims where I was crowned for the
- 20:28dignity of a child of God who was bestowed on me,
- 20:32which was bestowed on me at baptism, is greater than
- 20:34that of the rule of a kingdom. The latter I
- 20:36should lose at death. The other would be my passport
- 20:39to everlasting glory. If you're not familiar with Saint Louis
- 20:44of France, he was a great saint, and I mean
- 20:49no wonder, no wonder the devil went after France as
- 20:52hard as he did. The French Revolution was the first
- 20:57communist revolution, was a purely atheistic and yeah, no, Saint
- 21:03Louis of France was a great Christian king, and shame
- 21:08we didn't have more of him in that side of
- 21:10my family. It is because man is cleanse from sin
- 21:15by baptism that Saint Paul exclaims there is therefore now
- 21:19no combination to them that are in Christ. Jesus Roman
- 21:22eight one. The words of Saint Peter on the day
- 21:26of Pentecost show what is the effect produced by baptism.
- 21:30Do penance and be baptized, every one of you, in
- 21:32the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of your sins,
- 21:36and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost
- 21:39or Holy Spirit Act two thirty eight. You cannot receive
- 21:43the Holy Spirit without being baptized. A lot of Protestants
- 21:46get that wrong. Some Catholics do as well. But I
- 21:49was told that even Billy Graham said that discouraged his
- 21:54family for being baptized, because he said that was basically
- 21:57just Catholic superstition and just symbolic. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
- 22:06Fortunately for us it is the case. I mean, yeah,
- 22:09but fortunately for us it's not the case, because I mean,
- 22:12we do actually receive the Holy Spirit and we're sealed
- 22:16and become members of the Body of Christ. And you know,
- 22:19you can have the Bible and all the faith in
- 22:21the world. But you know what does the Bible say.
- 22:26Jesus said they would come to him and say, Lord,
- 22:29did we not preach in your name, cast out demons
- 22:32in your name? Even perform miracles in your name? And
- 22:35he would say, truly, I say to you, I do
- 22:37not know you be gone. That's not good. It's not good. Hope,
- 22:43that's not the case for Billy Graham. I know his family.
- 22:47They're nice people. I'll leave it that they're nice people,
- 22:53are they I leave it that they're nice people. They
- 23:01don't know what they don't know. I'm going to put
- 23:03it that way. They don't know what they don't know,
- 23:05and God will judge them on what they know. So
- 23:07there you have it. Saint Paul speaks of baptism as
- 23:13the laver la ve e argus is way you pronounce
- 23:17it of being of the laver of regeneration and renovation
- 23:22of the Holy Ghost, whereby being justified his grace, by
- 23:26His grace, we may be errs according to the Hope
- 23:29of Life Everlasting Titus three, five and seven. Again he says,
- 23:33in one spirit we are all baptized into one body.
- 23:35First Corinthians twelve thirteen. Baptism was instituted by our Lord
- 23:41at his own baptism and joined upon the church at
- 23:44his ascension. The Lord caused himself to be baptism baptized
- 23:48in the Jordan in order to sanctify water and impart
- 23:51to it a cleansing power. The manifestation of all three
- 23:54persons of the Holy Trinity at the time of his
- 23:57baptism showed that the sacrament was not to be It
- 24:00was to old choke pray here hold on, I gotta
- 24:06get no sip of that water. Sorry about that all right?
- 24:11Where was I? The manifestation of all three persons of
- 24:15the Holy Trinedy at the time of his baptism showed
- 24:19that the sacrament was to be administered in the name
- 24:21of three divine persons. Christ also told his apostles at
- 24:26his ascension to go baptizing all nations of the name
- 24:29of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost
- 24:31Matthew twenty eight, nineteen. Baptism acts spiritually as water does materially.
- 24:37It cleanses us from the stains of sin. It extinguishes
- 24:43us for us the flames of hell and a purgatory,
- 24:46and imparts to us a new life. It quinches the
- 24:49thirst of the soul. It gives us strength to fulfill
- 24:51the commandments, causes us to bring forth fruit to eternal life,
- 24:56and makes us members of Christ's mystical body. Everyone knows
- 25:01that the natural order water cleanses the body, puts out fire,
- 25:05and recalls to consciousness one who has fainted. In other words,
- 25:08to my faints. She can splash water in their face.
- 25:10They'll come to. It invigorates the human frame and gives
- 25:14fertility to the soil. The water of baptism does the
- 25:17same in spiritual order. Every newborn infant has the stain
- 25:21of original sin attaching to him, and every adult has
- 25:24an addition that of actual sin, the Blessed version Mary
- 25:27being the exception, because another proof you can give someone
- 25:32who doesn't believe that we know that the Holy Spirit
- 25:37would not enter anything impure. Nothing impure can enter into Heaven,
- 25:41and Heaven would not enter anything unpure. So in order
- 25:46for God to be incarnated as Jesus, his mother had
- 25:51to be kept free from the stain of original sin.
- 25:55The sins vanish see these sins vanish at the lava.
- 26:00Again that humans is washing if I remember correctly, of regeneration,
- 26:04as a spark disappears if it falls into the ocean.
- 26:08On this account, no penance is enjoined on the newly baptized.
- 26:12Anyone dying immediately after baptism goes straight to Heaven if
- 26:15he has the time at the time, no attachment of
- 26:19anial sin, thus escaping purgatory and hell. And since the
- 26:22person baptized receives the Holy Ghost and with him sanctifying grace,
- 26:27a new life begins for him, the life in God.
- 26:30In other words, speaking of the Blessed Virgin Mary, she
- 26:34had to be essentially pre baptized for the Holy Ghost
- 26:38to enter her, without which we don't have Jesus. Thus,
- 26:43baptism is the birth of the soul, whereas the other
- 26:46sacraments are its food or its medicine. Baptism is also
- 26:50called regeneration because of the commencement of another and a
- 26:54new life. When water is poured on the exterior, an
- 26:59interior chain change takes place. The individual becomes a new creature.
- 27:02From sinful, he becomes just, and baptism true peace of
- 27:07mind is acquired through the end dwelling of the Holy Ghost.
- 27:10The early Christians used to feel the same interior happiness
- 27:13after baptism that we feel after making a good confession.
- 27:16It may be truly said that the water of baptism
- 27:19quenches the thirst of the soul. Furthermore, when the Holy
- 27:23Ghost enters the soul at baptism, he enlightens the understanding
- 27:26and justifies the will. When Saul, all the persecutor of
- 27:29the Christians, was baptized, there fell from his eyes as
- 27:32it were Scales Acts nine eighteen, indicating that his spiritual
- 27:38blindness was at an end. Baptism also confers strength to
- 27:42resist the temptations of the evil enemy. Yet the corrupt
- 27:45proclivity remains, and man is ever subject to temptations, as
- 27:50the Hebrews, when they had escaped from servitude by their
- 27:53passages of the Red Sea, were still exposed to attacks
- 27:56of their adversaries in the desert. As the will is
- 28:00verified by baptism, we are better able to perform good works.
- 28:03He who has received the Holy Ghost possesses divine charity,
- 28:08and by charity we abide in God are closely united
- 28:11to Him John fourteen twenty three one John four sixteen Hens.
- 28:18Having received the Holy Ghost and with him divine charity,
- 28:21we are in baptism made one with Christ Galatians three
- 28:24twenty seven. We are reunited to Christ as members to
- 28:27the head. Your members are the members of Christ. For
- 28:30Corinthians six point fifteen. We are made members of one
- 28:33great body, of which Christ is the head and the life.
- 28:36All the graces which we receive as members of the
- 28:40Church proceed from Christ. Heins. He is rightly termed the
- 28:45life giving Head of the Church, for in one spirit
- 28:48we are all baptized into one body one Corinthians twelve
- 28:51thirteen and fifteen. Him baptism, we are cut off from
- 28:55the stock of the old sinful atom and grafted into
- 28:58Christ as new creatures. We are no longer the posterity
- 29:02of the old Adam, but of the posterity of Christ.
- 29:05Baptism is compared to the door of Noah's ark. See
- 29:08how marvelous are the effects of the sacrament. The grace
- 29:11of baptism is of all the gifts of God, the
- 29:13most excellent, the most exalted, the most precious, who being unbaptized,
- 29:20unbaptized would not desire baptism. Baptism is indispensably necessary to salvation.
- 29:28And then he gets into the issue of unbaptized children.
- 29:31Already discussed this, Okay, the church teaching has changed on
- 29:36that point. Now. In his time, it was believed that
- 29:40the children in Limbo were perfectly happy and received, you know,
- 29:47all wonderful fullness, except being able to inter heaven. We
- 29:51now know that they do inter heaven and are taken
- 29:55there by the blessed Virgin Mary. And you know, we're
- 30:00very blessed to have that teaching. You know, there's no
- 30:04new revelation, But throughout the centuries things are better understood
- 30:09another thing's products and still't understand hints it follows that
- 30:15parents ought to have their children baptized immediately after birth.
- 30:19Infant baptism has been customary since Apostock times. Say A
- 30:23Fonsa says that if parents, without an urgent reason neglect
- 30:27to have their children baptized within ten days after their birth,
- 30:31they incur the guilt of mortal sin. Remember that, and
- 30:35you really sometimes you may have to tell your preset. Honestly,
- 30:40some churches don't seem to see the priority of getting
- 30:44the child in there and baptized right away. They put
- 30:46people on waiting lists. Father Sprago says that the parents
- 30:50can incur the guilt of mortal sin if the child's
- 30:52not baptized within ten days. But you know, we're talking
- 30:56as soon as possible occasion. Certainly the priest who prevents
- 31:01that from happening is also encouraging incurring sin. So you
- 31:04might want to look up fellow of Spiago's words on
- 31:08page five to eighty of the Exhaustive Catechism of the
- 31:11Catholic Church Exhaustive Explanation of the Catechism of the Catholic
- 31:14Church and send that to your priest if he doesn't
- 31:17seem to see the urgency. Because it's going to be
- 31:20on him if he prevents it and something happens that
- 31:24kid before he gets baptized or sheet whatever. In cases
- 31:28of necessity, one can administer baptism without the user ceremonies.
- 31:33That is true. If your priests given you hard time,
- 31:35says you got to wait three months, go in and
- 31:36baptize your kid, and then chew him out and say,
- 31:40because you couldn't get off your butt and do it,
- 31:42I had to do it myself. Okay, you have every
- 31:46right to say that to a priest who's falling down
- 31:48on his duty. Sorry. I know he's busy, but he
- 31:51has that's his primary duty. Actually baptize and give the Eucharist.
- 31:57That's like his primary duty. And if he's too busy,
- 32:00they need a second priest of that church and a deacon.
- 32:02If nothing else, a deacon can baptize. But anyway, yeah,
- 32:08really chew him out. I mean, you have every right
- 32:10to do so. And if he's got any problem, he
- 32:15can take it up with others. Barrago. And if I
- 32:17have to speak on behalf of the father of Spargo,
- 32:19I will not that I should, but I'll say a
- 32:24prayer and ask forgiveness ahead of time. Yeah, nurses, this
- 32:30is true, and this is eighteen nineties. Nurses often baptize
- 32:34weekly infants. This was very common in the eighteen nineties.
- 32:38All the church, I mean all the hospitals were associated
- 32:41with a church, and most of them were Catholic. Before
- 32:45fifteen hundred, all of them were Catholic, and nurses were
- 32:47usually nuns, and they would baptize infants if they thought
- 32:51they might not live long enough to be baptized by
- 32:53a priest. The baptism by Jews and Heretics is valid. Yes,
- 32:59you can actually be baptized by a non Christian, but
- 33:02it must be correctly administered. That is, if water be
- 33:05poured in the child's head or some other portion of
- 33:07the body at the same moment the formula is repeated.
- 33:11I baptize the in the name of the Father's Son,
- 33:14in the Holy Spirit or ghost, however you want to
- 33:16say it. If the child lives, he should be taking
- 33:18the church later on for the usual ceremonies, and that
- 33:21in case it would probably be a conditional baptism. You
- 33:24do need to tell the priests the child's already been baptized,
- 33:28and you'll discuss it and he'll decide if the child
- 33:31needs to be rebaptized, or conditionally baptized, or not at all.
- 33:34Actually may just be for the ceremony of the christenings,
- 33:39so to speak, without but the priests will sport that out.
- 33:42He's been trained in that matter. If it be surmised
- 33:46that through overhaste or some other cause, the first baptized
- 33:49was not baptism was not properly performed, the priest must
- 33:52baptize the child again conditionally. In the majority of cases,
- 33:56only the priests should administer baptism, and that in the
- 34:00church with a prescribed ceremonial. That is ideal, But apparently
- 34:04not all of them seemed to get that these days.
- 34:07In the early ages of Christianity, only the bishop or
- 34:09a priest whom he empowered to act for him, had
- 34:12the right to baptize. But when the dioceses became larger
- 34:16and it was impossible for the bishop to go about
- 34:18continually to administer the sacrament, the power to baptize was
- 34:22made part of the priest's office. As a matter of fact,
- 34:25in the present day, only the priests of the parish
- 34:27still possesses this right unless he authorizes another to act
- 34:30in his stead, like such as a a deacon. Originally,
- 34:34baptism was only administered in baptisteries or a small stone
- 34:37chapel containing all that was necessary for baptism, situated either
- 34:42in close proximity to the principal church of the diocese
- 34:44or in the exterior building. About the seventh century, infant
- 34:48baptism became universal and an adult baptism are rare occurrent, so
- 34:51they pretty much caught up fonts containing blessed water within
- 34:56place in the church where the bishop officiated. Baptism in
- 34:59private houses was at that point strictly forbidden, but in
- 35:02the case of children of kings and princes, it might
- 35:05be administered in the palace chapel. Every king had his
- 35:08own church, basically, so a sacred and solemn so sacred
- 35:12and solemn a ceremony ought to be performed in a
- 35:15consecrated place. In the present day, the bishop's permission may
- 35:19must be obtained for the administration of baptism in a
- 35:21private house. If baptism by water is impossible, it may
- 35:26be replaced by the baptism of desire, or by the
- 35:29baptism of blood. Is in the case of those who
- 35:31suffered martyrdom for the faith of Christ, the Emperor Valentini,
- 35:36and the second was on his way to Milan to
- 35:39be baptized when he was assassinated. Saint Ambrose said of
- 35:42him that his desire had been the means of his cleansing.
- 35:45The Patriarch's prophets and holy men of the Old Testament
- 35:50had the baptism of desire. Also, the blessed Virgin Mary,
- 35:54the most holy woman ever to live, the Mother of God,
- 36:01had the desire to be sinless, and therefore had the
- 36:05baptism of desire. Had she known of the sacrament of baptism,
- 36:10she would have immediately asked for it. And therefore, just
- 36:14like the Emperor Valentini in the Second, as Saint Ambrose said,
- 36:18they had the baptism of desire. You think that's weird, Well,
- 36:22we'll get into that. Think about all the martyrdom of
- 36:24the Holy Innocence, the babies that were killed when Herod
- 36:28was trying to kill Jesus. Did they go to hell? No,
- 36:33they were the first martyrs. They were first people to
- 36:35die for Christ. All right. But anyway, God accepts the
- 36:40will for the for the deed. In this he manifests
- 36:43his super abundant loving kindness. But all the temporal penalties
- 36:47of sin are not remitted by baptism of desire. Martydam
- 36:51for Christ's sake is the baptism of blood? Is this
- 36:55the holy innocence received? And the Church commemorates them as saints.
- 36:59All on baptized persons who suffered martyrdom for the Christian faith,
- 37:04for some active Christian virtue or the fulfillment of a
- 37:08Christian duty, also received the baptism of blood. And again,
- 37:14the Blessed Virgin Mary was a martyr. You may say, well,
- 37:16she wasn't killed for the faith. What did Simeon say
- 37:19to her in the temple? A sword will pierce your heart. Also,
- 37:24she was a martyr in terms of the suffering she endured,
- 37:29seeing her son killed and her God killed, and this
- 37:34pretty big deal. And there's also a martyrdom of living chastely,
- 37:41I mean, especially in a marriage. But you can be
- 37:44a martyr in terms of not marrying for the sake
- 37:48of God, for the sake of the kingdom of God.
- 37:50There's a white martyrdom in which so called in which
- 37:54because you're Christian people mock you or look downs you,
- 37:58or you don't get a promotion. That's not quite the
- 38:01same level. But yes, Western Virgin Mary was certainly a martyr.
- 38:07It says so in the Bible, a sword will pierce
- 38:09your heart. Also, if the entire Bibles inspired by the
- 38:12Holy Spirit, we have to accept that one. She was
- 38:15full of grace before grace entered the world. The Angel said,
- 38:18hell full of grace. Grace had not yet entered the
- 38:22world through Jesus Christ. Therefore, she was filled with grace
- 38:24before Christ came. Yeah, and I think I've covered all
- 38:31the points. If I think it's something else, I'll tell you.
- 38:33But anyway, Witness John the Baptist. Let's see, we just
- 38:40said that. Let's see, all in baptized persons who suffered
- 38:43martyrdom for the Christian faith, for some act of Christian
- 38:46virtue or the fulfillment of Christian duty also received the
- 38:50baptism of blood. What more duty is there to give
- 38:55birth the Son of God. That's Christian duty. That's definitely
- 39:01Christian duty. Right, All who participate in the fulfillment Christian
- 39:06duty receive the baptism blood. Witness Saint John the Baptist.
- 39:10Saint A Mariantiana, I don't know that one who while
- 39:16yet a cat of cumin was found by the pagan's
- 39:18praguing at Saint Agnes's tune, and was put to death
- 39:21by them. The Church does not pray for the unbaptized
- 39:24to suffer death for Christ, for he himself says, who
- 39:29shall lose his life from me shall find it Matthew
- 39:32ten thirty nine. In the early ages of the church,
- 39:37Let's see, in the early ages of the Church, solemn
- 39:39baptism was administered on three days of the year, only
- 39:43three days of the year, Holy Saturday, the eve of
- 39:46with Sunday and in the East, and on the eve
- 39:49of the Epiphany. Thank goodness, you can be baptized in
- 39:52any day of the year now, but I can't. Because
- 39:55of that. People no longer seem to respect it. It's
- 39:58kind of lost its mystery and and I don't know,
- 40:04people take things for granted, that's for sure. Baptism used
- 40:07to be administered in the night preceding Easter and with Sunday.
- 40:12It was administered at Easter because of the spiritual resurrection
- 40:15and therefore appropriate to the season at Pentecost, because on
- 40:19the first day of Pentecost three thousand persons were baptized,
- 40:23and because of the Holy Spirit is given in baptism
- 40:25on the eve of the Epiphany, because the Church commemorates
- 40:28the baptists Our Lord and the Jordan that day. And
- 40:32modern actually is a little more in keeping with original
- 40:35tradition because you know, we read in the Acts that
- 40:38somebody believed and they were baptized that day, and their
- 40:41whole families were baptized that day. That includes infants. So
- 40:45it is good that you can now be baptized at
- 40:47any point individuals. Okay, we got that. The water to
- 40:52be used in baptized baptism is solemnly blessed and holy Saturday,
- 40:57on the eve of Pentecost. To this day, the premonial
- 41:00and the ceremonial was elaborate and impressive. It is accompanied
- 41:03by prayers and chants and many beautiful symbolic ceremonies, such
- 41:07as the mixing of chrism, breathing upon the water, dripping
- 41:11the pastal candle into it, etc. In the first ages
- 41:14of Christianity, religious instruction preceded baptism, and the cantons for
- 41:19baptism were called cantic cumans. Of course it doesn't count
- 41:22for infants, but an adult was exstructed. Hey you're gonna
- 41:26get you know you believe in Christ. Well, we're gonna
- 41:28tell you what you're gonna do, and this is what
- 41:30you have to believe. And you have to renounce Satan
- 41:32and all his works. You know everything you had to say.
- 41:35Anyone who desired to become a Christian had to present
- 41:37himself to the bishop, who questioned him closely, and if
- 41:40he thought him worthy, administered in him into the number
- 41:43of catechumens. He laid his hands upon him and made
- 41:46a sign that he was soon to receive the Holy Ghost.
- 41:49He made the sign of the Cross upon his forehead
- 41:51and breasts to signify that he must believe in the
- 41:53teaching of our crucified Lord and shape his life thereby. Finally,
- 41:57he put salt on his lips to denote the present
- 42:00from temptation of sin. The candidate was then a catechumen,
- 42:05a catechumen of the first class, and for two years
- 42:08he was instructed in Biblical history, the Ten Commandments, the
- 42:11Precepts of Charity, and allowed to be president Mass until
- 42:14the Creed. At the end of the second year, he
- 42:18became a catechumen of the second class, that is, he
- 42:21was obliged to fast and lent, to hear sermons, to
- 42:23confess his sins, to undergo various exorcisms, annointings, and other
- 42:29symbolical ceremonies. In the last week before baptism was administered
- 42:34after Palm Sunday, the candidates were taught the doctrine of
- 42:38the Mystery of the Holy Trinity, the Apostles Creed in
- 42:40the Lord's Prayer. All these ceremonies previous to baptism had
- 42:45been retained to the present day, and unless you could
- 42:47recite the Apostles Creed, you were not allowed to receive
- 42:50the Euchrist. It's the reason we recited at Mass. Immediately
- 42:55before baptism, the candidate had to take a solemn vow
- 42:58to believe and follow the teaching of the baptismal vow
- 43:01or Covenant. Standing with his face toward the west, he
- 43:04renounced the devil in all his works, the worship of
- 43:06idols and corrupt practices of the Heathens, and the pomps
- 43:09and vanities of the world. In terringward the east. He
- 43:12promised to believe and follow the teachers of Christ. This
- 43:15promise is known as the baptismal vow. It is also
- 43:18called a covenant because God at the same time promises
- 43:21the assistance of His grace to fulfill the promises made,
- 43:24and to reward those who keep it with eternal felicity
- 43:27after death. The baptismal vow resembles a military oath taken
- 43:31by a soldier, for at baptism, we are enrolled under
- 43:36the banner of Christ, and we promise to fight against
- 43:39the adversaries of God. The baptismal vow also resembles marriage
- 43:44marriage treaty concluded between those who are wedded at the
- 43:47altar for the soul then promises fidelity and love to
- 43:52her celestial bridegroom. It is well for those who have
- 43:55been baptized in their infancy to renew their vowels certain
- 44:00times after they have attained the age of reason, particularly
- 44:03before approaching the sacraments. Of course, we renew our vowels
- 44:08our baptismal vowls at least once a year. In the
- 44:10Catholic Church, a lot of people say saints great saints
- 44:13say it should be done every day, by the way
- 44:15Saint John christas And used to renew his vows and
- 44:18hours of temptation, saying I renounced the devil and give
- 44:20myself holy to Christ. In the time of persecution, the
- 44:23ely Christians were accustomed to solemnly renew their vowels once
- 44:26a year to strengthen themselves in the faith. One could
- 44:33wish this was done now, and we do. I think
- 44:35that every parish I've been in, I think that's pretty
- 44:38much tradition. Christians who have been unfaithful, their vows were
- 44:41the last judgment. Here from the lips of our Lord,
- 44:43the appalling words thou wicked servant, out of their own
- 44:47of thine own mouth, I will condemn thee by thou
- 44:50promise thou didst want solemnly make to me. Formally, baptism
- 44:55was generally by immersion, but oftentimes water sprinkled apur on
- 44:58the individual, the priest, and the godfather, in the case
- 45:02of women, the godmother. And you know, you're supposed to
- 45:06have a godfather, and you know, at least, but doesn't
- 45:10always happen these days. Someone who says I'm gonna make
- 45:14sure this child's raised up as a good Christian, you know,
- 45:17doesn't always happen these days, was led the person to
- 45:21be baptized by the hand down the steps and plunging
- 45:24him three times under water, where the priest pronounced the
- 45:26words prescribed by our Lord. The three fourfold immersion was
- 45:30an honor of the most wely Trinity. It was also
- 45:32in commemoration of the burial of Christ and his rising again,
- 45:35and was intended to signify that the old sinful man
- 45:38was buried and the new man had arisen Romans six
- 45:42three eleven. In the later centuries, baptism by immersion was
- 45:47abolished and the customs sprinkling almost exclusively adopted. A lot
- 45:50of times they had to do with scarcity of water.
- 45:52By the way, the name of a saint was given
- 45:54to everyone at the baptismal font. This was his baptism
- 45:58or Christian name. The individual baptized was placed on a
- 46:02special protection of a saint or an angel who was
- 46:06to service a model. Socrates of old used to advise
- 46:09parents to give the names of virtuous persons to their
- 46:12children in order to encourage them to imitate their example.
- 46:16Alexander the Great used to say to his soldiers who
- 46:18had the same name as himself, either take another name,
- 46:21or see that thou dost credit to it to my name.
- 46:25In addition, the name of some saint was to indicate
- 46:29the person in baptized has been made a child of God.
- 46:31And incorporated in the company of Saints. On occasion when
- 46:35God episodes particularly favors to his servants, the name was
- 46:39sometimes altered, which as Abraham became Abram became Abraham, Simon
- 46:43called Peter. Actually the vice of Vergion, Mary was actually
- 46:46dressed by the Angel as full of grace. Her name
- 46:49was actually changed full of grace, and of course Saul
- 46:53changed to Paul. The Church does not approve of heathen
- 46:56or of fantastical names. Yes, you should actually give your
- 46:59child a Christian name, not Lashanta or whatever ridiculous reign
- 47:06or something people come up with these days. The name
- 47:09of a saying may often prove to be an incentive
- 47:11to him who bears it to lead a Christian life.
- 47:14When baptism is administered with the usual ceremonies, which is
- 47:18called solemn baptism, the person baptized must have a godfather
- 47:22or godmother, or one of each, but not more than two.
- 47:25The obligation of the sponsors see that the person baptized
- 47:28keeps a faith and leads a Christian life. I think
- 47:30I pretty much just covered that, and my battery's running dead,
- 47:36so I guess I'm going to have to wrap it up. Here,
- 47:39let's see we get to the last paragraph. The beautiful
- 47:42ceremonies falling upon baptism denote the dignity conferred upon the
- 47:46newly baptized and the obligations resting upon him. The priest
- 47:49annoints the person or child on the top of the
- 47:52head with a chrism to form the cross, remind him
- 47:54that he is now a Christian, an anointed one. This
- 47:57function also recalls the royal dignity is the son of
- 48:00the King of Heaven. It monishes him to overcome the
- 48:03concupiscence of the flesh. Moreover, oil, being a mild substance,
- 48:08reminds into practice meekness and exercise the work of mercy.
- 48:12It also signifies the illuminating and justifying grace of the
- 48:15Holy Spirit. In former times, the newly baptized used to
- 48:19put on a white robe, which they wore in the
- 48:20church for a week until low Sunday is a symbol
- 48:23the robe of The symbol of the robe was baptismal
- 48:27innocence and the wedding garment of sanctifying grace, which were
- 48:31to be kept unspotted until death. On the present day,
- 48:34a white cloth is laid upon the newly baptized. A
- 48:37light of candles then given to the person baptized or
- 48:39the sponsor if an infant. This is to note the
- 48:42light of the Holy Spirit which he has received and
- 48:45recalls the words of our Lord. So let your light
- 48:48shine forth before men, that they may see your good
- 48:50works and glorify the Father who's in heaven Matthew five sixteen.
- 48:55It also indicates that all the poors of the City
- 48:57of Eternal Light are open to him. All these ceremonies
- 49:00have a sanctifying influence and consecrate him who receives them
- 49:03to be a fitting templar of the Temple of the
- 49:06Holy Ghost. Formerly, the person baptized was confirmed immediately and
- 49:12afterwards immediately afterwards admitted to Holy Communion. Now it's we
- 49:16do it differently because you can be baptized as an infant,
- 49:19then you have to go through Christian training before you
- 49:21can be confirmed. So they're talking in the original times
- 49:24when most converts were adults. Anyway, he was also fully
- 49:28instructed in the doctrine of Holy Mass, the sacraments, and prayers,
- 49:31the so called discipline discipline disciplina, there's the word. It's
- 49:37Latin disciplina or kani previous to baptism. He would not

- 50:29next week. Y'all have a great week. Talk to you
- 50:32next time.
