- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's the 2nd of December, it is
- 0:16a Tuesday and I'm so glad you tapped on play because today is
- 0:21a very exciting day. We are opening up a new book of
- 0:24the Bible and this book is a fascinating one.
- 0:28We're going to read through the book of Daniel together.
- 0:31So first of all, a little bit of context here.
- 0:34We have got the massive Babylonian Empire who has been
- 0:37fighting away for dominance and as they have been growing in
- 0:41power, the Assyrian Empire, the great enemy that destroyed the
- 0:45nation of Israel, they have started to diminish.
- 0:49So Babylon aligns themselves with the Medes and begins the
- 0:53work of basically just sweeping up and collecting all of the old
- 0:57Syrian territories and bringing them into Babylonian rule.
- 1:01And as they do this, they discover this really pesky
- 1:05nation named Judah, who is not very good at being one of the
- 1:09vassal states, being one of the the ruled areas.
- 1:12So they keep on having this conflict with them, and part of
- 1:16the way they manage this is by taking the brightest young
- 1:20prospects of those countries and taking them into Babylon where
- 1:25they become servants of the great empire.
- 1:27And so we are going to follow the story of this young man
- 1:30named Daniel, who that's exactly what happens to him.
- 1:33And the first half of the book of Daniel really tells that
- 1:36story, which is a Cracker Jack and one that you probably have
- 1:39heard many times, but it will be great to read it again.
- 1:42And then the second half of Daniel turns completely in a new
- 1:45direction and it becomes these incredibly strange visions that
- 1:51we will unpack as we work our way through them.
- 1:54So this is a wonderful, wonderful book that speaks about
- 1:57God's sovereignty. No matter how difficult, no
- 2:00matter how persecuted the situation, God is still in
- 2:05control and is still sovereign over all.
- 2:07And that is a theme that will play out again and again and
- 2:10again as we spend the next three weeks in the book of Daniel.
- 2:14So, Holy Spirit, open us up to your truth as we read this
- 2:20incredible story and hear your words.
- 2:24You ready, friends? Yeah, me too.
- 2:26Let's read together Daniel chapter 1.
- 2:38During the third year of King Jehovah Kim's reign and Judah,
- 2:42King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged
- 2:46it. The Lord gave him victory over
- 2:49King Jehoiakim of Judah and permitted him to take some of
- 2:52the sacred objects from the temple of God.
- 2:55So Nebuchadnezzar took them back to the land of Babylonia and
- 2:59placed them in the treasure House of his God.
- 3:02Then the king ordered Ashpinaz, his chief of staff, to bring to
- 3:07the palace some of the young men of Judah's royal family and
- 3:10other noble families who had been brought to Babylon as
- 3:13captives. Select only strong, healthy and
- 3:17good looking young men, he said. Make sure they are well versed
- 3:21in every branch of learning, are gifted with knowledge and good
- 3:24judgement, and are suited to serve in the royal palace.
- 3:28Train these young men in the language and literature of
- 3:31Babylon. The king assigned them a daily
- 3:35ration of food and wine from his own kitchens.
- 3:38They were to be trained for three years and then they would
- 3:41enter the royal service. Daniel, Hananiah, Michel and
- 3:47Azariah were four of the young men chosen, all from the tribe
- 3:51of Judah. The chief staff renamed them
- 3:54with these Babylonian names. Daniel was called Beltigesar,
- 4:00Hananiah was called Shadrach, Michel was called Meshach, and
- 4:06Azariah was called Abednego. But Daniel was determined not to
- 4:11defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by
- 4:14the king. He asked the chief of staff for
- 4:17permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.
- 4:21Now God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection
- 4:24for Daniel, but he responded, I am afraid of my Lord the king
- 4:29who has ordered that you eat this food and wine.
- 4:32If you become pale and thin compared to the other youths
- 4:35your age, I'm afraid the king will have me beheaded.
- 4:39Daniel spoke with the attendant, who had been appointed by the
- 4:42chief of staff to look after Daniel.
- 4:44Hananiah, Michelle and Azariah, please test us for 10 days on a
- 4:50diet of vegetables and water. Daniel said.
- 4:53At the end of the 10 days, see how we look compared to the
- 4:56other young men who are eating the King's food.
- 4:59Then make your decision in light of what you see.
- 5:02The attendant agreed to Daniel's suggestion and tested them for
- 5:0510 days. At the end of the 10 days,
- 5:09Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better
- 5:12nourished than the young men who had been eating the food
- 5:14assigned by the king. So after that, the attendant fed
- 5:18them only vegetables instead of the food and wine provided for
- 5:22the others. God gave these four young men an
- 5:25unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of
- 5:29literature and wisdom, and God gave Daniel the special ability
- 5:34to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams.
- 5:38When the training period ordered by the king was completed, the
- 5:41chief of staff brought all the young men to King
- 5:44Nebuchadnezzar. The king talked with them, and
- 5:48no one impressed him as much as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and
- 5:52Azariah. So they entered the royal
- 5:55service whenever the king consulted them in any matter
- 5:59requiring wisdom and balanced judgement.
- 6:02He found them 10 times more capable than any of the
- 6:05magicians and enchanters in his entire Kingdom.
- 6:10Daniel remained in the royal service until the first year of
- 6:14the reign of King Cyrus. Ah, Almighty God, you are
- 6:27mighty, and you rule all things all the time.
- 6:33And sometimes it might feel like you are absent or the way things
- 6:37are going is away from your intended plans.
- 6:40But Lord, here we see that You are able to bring about your
- 6:44outcomes and your plans no matter what the circumstance.
- 6:50So Lord, as we go through our lives, I just pray that you give
- 6:53us faith. Faith that no matter what is
- 6:56happening, faith no matter what the twists and turns that are
- 7:01presented in our path, that we know that You are in control and
- 7:06ultimately in the fullness of time, your plans will be
- 7:10revealed, even if they don't make any sense in the moment.
- 7:14So Lord, we surrender our will and we surrender our lives to
- 7:18you, our loving mighty King, our beautiful Saviour, and our close
- 7:27friend and Holy Spirit. Now you are a wonder, and we
- 7:33love you and we pray all of this in your saving name, Jesus,
- 7:37Amen.
