- 0:15Speaker 1: Showbiz for one one dot com. Roger Friedman, How you doing.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I'm great.
- 0:22Speaker 2: I'm getting ready for the solar eclips today? Is that today? Yeah?
- 0:27Speaker 2: It's at one o'clock, one o'clock to you can watch
- 0:30Speaker 2: it on CNN and everywhere one o'clock this afternoon. Yeah,
- 0:35Speaker 2: one o'clock this afternoon. Can I see any your solary
- 0:37Speaker 2: clips all over North America? And I can see it
- 0:40Speaker 2: in Manhattan to Europe? I think you can see Yes,
- 0:43Speaker 2: I think you can see it. Yeah.
- 0:45Speaker 1: Oh, because at one o'clock this afternoon, I'm m seeing
- 0:48Speaker 1: a luncheon which is which is But it's very high
- 0:53Speaker 1: up at the top of a skyscraper and it's a
- 0:55Speaker 1: fantastic all windows. So are you telling me it's going
- 0:58Speaker 1: to get dark in the middle of that?
- 1:01Speaker 2: I know, But you have to bring your little glasses,
- 1:04Speaker 2: you know, the uh oh, the special glasses that you
- 1:07Speaker 2: look through because you don't want to look directly at
- 1:09Speaker 2: the sun. Yeah, but otherwise you'll have a problem. But
- 1:12Speaker 2: you know that. Carly Simon sang about that about the
- 1:17Speaker 2: taking your leric.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Jet up to the DEVI scully. Wait, wait, I'll tell
- 1:20Speaker 1: you what's this? You're so vain? That was the song
- 1:23Speaker 1: You're So Vain.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, And she has a new album coming out tomorrow
- 1:27Speaker 2: night at Midnight, for her first album in eighteen years,
- 1:30Speaker 2: and it's fabulous. It's got already got two hits on
- 1:34Speaker 2: it and it's getting rave reviews.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Now, there's one song where she sort of says about
- 1:39Speaker 1: James Taylor, I never really loved you?
- 1:41Speaker 2: Is that true? She says? The question is yeah, she says,
- 1:45Speaker 2: did I really love you? Did you really love me?
- 1:48Speaker 2: It's a cool song. Actually, it's very it's as you
- 1:51Speaker 2: can imagine, it's very catchy because that's a Carly Simon melody.
- 1:56Speaker 1: I still can't imagine Carly Simon married to James Taylor,
- 1:59Speaker 1: to be hones, I just can't.
- 2:00Speaker 2: For eleven years. Yeah, they have two children, they have
- 2:04Speaker 2: several grandchildren, and I know it's hard to believe, but
- 2:08Speaker 2: it happened.
- 2:09Speaker 1: So she's got a new album coming out. How does
- 2:11Speaker 1: her voice sound?
- 2:12Speaker 2: Her voice sounds perfect. She couldn't sound better. It's an
- 2:17Speaker 2: album full of hits, and it's called Comes Comes in Waves,
- 2:23Speaker 2: and I think people are really gonna like it. And
- 2:27Speaker 2: already the response to the first two songs. One song
- 2:30Speaker 2: is called Peaches and one song is called Hell which
- 2:32Speaker 2: I call which has a great line, and called love
- 2:36Speaker 2: a Liar. But it's it's already happening on Amazon and
- 2:42Speaker 2: actually comes out at midnight tomorrow night. But in the meantime,
- 2:46Speaker 2: you can fly your lear jet up to Nova Scotia.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah. Now that song, you're so vain. We're pretty sure
- 2:52Speaker 1: it was Warren Baty. Has that been.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I think so, don't you? I think it is. But
- 2:57Speaker 2: she's always been cagy about it for us. Some times
- 3:00Speaker 2: she said it's about it's three different people, yeah, combined.
- 3:05Speaker 2: But it is one of the great you know, Taylor
- 3:08Speaker 2: Swift points these songs. Now you have to guess who
- 3:11Speaker 2: they're about. But the original person who did it was
- 3:14Speaker 2: Carly you know, she was really uh and and Taylor Swift,
- 3:19Speaker 2: you know, revers her so much that she's asked her
- 3:22Speaker 2: to come be on stage with her to sing here.
- 3:24Speaker 2: So then, really, which is pretty interesting. Yes, she's done
- 3:27Speaker 2: it several times. Yeah, now some of these so that's
- 3:31Speaker 2: so it's a big music week.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah, but some of these older artists, we love them,
- 3:35Speaker 1: they're the elder Statesman, but they probably too old to tour,
- 3:38Speaker 1: you know.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Rod Stewart, thank you, Rod Stewart, Well, Franky Valley, listen.
- 3:44Speaker 2: He's ninety two. He's very fragile, and they had him
- 3:48Speaker 2: until about six months ago. They had him out there
- 3:50Speaker 2: touring all the time, so that was enough, and now
- 3:54Speaker 2: he looks like he's packing it in. Rod Stewart is
- 3:58Speaker 2: only eighty one, and for the last few months people
- 4:02Speaker 2: have been complaining that he didn't seem really with it. Well,
- 4:05Speaker 2: of course it turned out he needed a cardiac stent.
- 4:08Speaker 2: He couldn't breathe. Now he's going to be fine. Now
- 4:12Speaker 2: he's going to come back and be more Rod Stewart
- 4:14Speaker 2: than ever he is. But yes he is. But yeah,
- 4:19Speaker 2: he was doing fine, except that he really looked like
- 4:22Speaker 2: he wasn't getting enough oxygen and blood through his arteries
- 4:26Speaker 2: and he probably had a completely blocked artery. But it
- 4:30Speaker 2: is now unblocked and he's going to take off the
- 4:34Speaker 2: next month or so and not do anything and see
- 4:37Speaker 2: how he feels. But you know, these kinds are human.
- 4:41Speaker 2: You know. The thing is that we don't think rock
- 4:43Speaker 2: stars are human, but you know, they are human, and
- 4:46Speaker 2: they have the same people have been canceling shows all summer.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Young people too. It's very weird. Yeah, but you know,
- 4:52Speaker 2: I don't remember this when we were young. I don't
- 4:54Speaker 2: remember this when we were young.
- 4:56Speaker 1: No, at a certain age, you know, baseball player is
- 4:58Speaker 1: like a forty year retire and football, I'm brady retire.
- 5:00Speaker 1: You don't keep trying to play at eighty. I mean,
- 5:02Speaker 1: you got to retire at some point.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I don't know. All the all the singers and all
- 5:06Speaker 2: the performers that we liked in the seventies are gonna
- 5:10Speaker 2: They're gonna they perform right up to the end. Okay,
- 5:13Speaker 2: they're going to be right on the stage when it's
- 5:14Speaker 2: when it's They're gonna go straight from the stage to
- 5:16Speaker 2: their funerals. All right. There's gonna be nothing in between
- 5:20Speaker 2: because they don't do anything else. They don't play golf,
- 5:23Speaker 2: you know, they don't play tennis, they don't macrima. So
- 5:27Speaker 2: they you know, what are they going to do? They
- 5:29Speaker 2: just want to keep it. They don't even need the money, really,
- 5:31Speaker 2: they just like to perform.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yeah, Hey, Uh, this guy, Ari Emmanuel, he is a
- 5:37Speaker 1: as you watched Entourage, he was Ari Gold but he
- 5:40Speaker 1: ended up owning William Morris. He bought all these talent
- 5:43Speaker 1: agents to them. But now what is he up to?
- 5:44Speaker 1: Now he's buying Broadway theaters?
- 5:46Speaker 2: What is he up to? So we used to have
- 5:48Speaker 2: here in New York we have the Schuberts and the Needlelanders,
- 5:52Speaker 2: and the third biggest company was called JUW Jamson and
- 5:56Speaker 2: a couple of years ago they sold out to some
- 6:00Speaker 2: called ATG from London and they and so ATG owns
- 6:05Speaker 2: like sixty four theaters around the world, but seven of
- 6:07Speaker 2: them are on Broadway in ten or in the West
- 6:10Speaker 2: End in London. And now ATG has sold to Ari Emanuel,
- 6:15Speaker 2: which is going to be really interesting because we have
- 6:17Speaker 2: a new He's like the new power player in town.
- 6:21Speaker 2: It's a in one way, it's a big endorsement of
- 6:24Speaker 2: Broadway that he would somebody would come in and pay
- 6:27Speaker 2: six billion dollars to own all these theaters. The question
- 6:33Speaker 2: is is he going to be using this as a
- 6:35Speaker 2: monopoly game and flipping them or is he going to
- 6:38Speaker 2: you know, hunker down and really support Broadway. So we'll
- 6:42Speaker 2: have to see but he's definitely a Hollywood power player,
- 6:45Speaker 2: which is unusual to have on Broadway in the past,
- 6:49Speaker 2: that's always been just people who were interested in the theater.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Is he trying to be like a Live Nation where
- 6:54Speaker 1: he'll control venues, ticketing, have that kind of mind?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Well, he's got he's yes. I mean he's got a
- 7:00Speaker 2: few ticket agencies also, so he's trying to combine all
- 7:03Speaker 2: these different businesses. Uh, this is something you know, Live
- 7:07Speaker 2: Nations started this way with a guy named Bob Sillerman
- 7:10Speaker 2: who since passed away. But he was the one who
- 7:13Speaker 2: originally thought, you know, live productions were going to be
- 7:15Speaker 2: the future, and now it's going to be Ari Emmanuel.
- 7:19Speaker 2: His brother was the mayor of Chicago and and does
- 7:23Speaker 2: talk about running for president.
- 7:26Speaker 1: And his other brother is that ghoul Zeka manual, that
- 7:31Speaker 1: ghoulish doctor.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Is he a ghoul? You don't know anything about the
- 7:35Speaker 2: I don't know anything about the brother.
- 7:37Speaker 1: The brother's the one that came up with the idea
- 7:39Speaker 1: that we should have death panels to decide if you're
- 7:41Speaker 1: too old to get any treatment.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Uh. That's that's something from like the Hunger Games or something, right.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Uh, hey, what about the the movie box office
- 7:56Speaker 1: you got is this unusually you got two of the
- 7:58Speaker 1: biggest box office hits ever huge at the same time.
- 8:02Speaker 1: How big are they.
- 8:02Speaker 2: At the same time today? In fact, very today as
- 8:06Speaker 2: we speak, Spider Man is hitting seven hundred million dollars
- 8:10Speaker 2: in the United States. It's way over a billion dollars worldwide,
- 8:14Speaker 2: but seven hundred billion dollars. And this is like we're
- 8:18Speaker 2: a week three or something that. Yeah, it's unbelievable. It's
- 8:22Speaker 2: it's Spider Man's just going to keep going and going
- 8:24Speaker 2: and going until it hits one billion dollars in America.
- 8:27Speaker 2: And the Odyssey is doing very well. It is heading
- 8:31Speaker 2: toward five hundred right now, five hundred million dollars. And
- 8:35Speaker 2: the Odyssey is going to win every Oscar. You don't
- 8:38Speaker 2: even have to. I would say, just give the oscars
- 8:40Speaker 2: now to the Odyssey and then move on to the
- 8:42Speaker 2: other movies.
- 8:43Speaker 1: And it's worth seeing.
- 8:45Speaker 2: It's worth the Odyssey is fantastic. Now we are getting
- 8:49Speaker 2: a lot of great movies. I will say, I'm really
- 8:51Speaker 2: pushing the New York Film Festival this year. Tickets have
- 8:53Speaker 2: just gone on sale. It starts a September twenty fifth
- 8:56Speaker 2: at Lincoln Center, and they have a fantastic lineup. I'm
- 9:01Speaker 2: really impressed. It's probably the best lineup. You know. We
- 9:04Speaker 2: have the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto Film Festival
- 9:08Speaker 2: and Venice and they're all good. But the New York
- 9:11Speaker 2: Film Festival really outed themselves this year and it's just
- 9:15Speaker 2: going to be one hit after another for two weeks.
- 9:18Speaker 2: So if you want to see what movies are coming
- 9:20Speaker 2: for the Oscars, that's the place to be in September.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, we only have like thirty seconds left. But
- 9:27Speaker 1: go back to Broadway from it. How well is Broadway doing.
- 9:29Speaker 1: It's Broadway okay. Financially everything's good broad Yeah, Broadway's okay.
- 9:34Speaker 2: A lot of shows closed, Ragtime is closing at the
- 9:37Speaker 2: end of the on the weekend, but you know, a
- 9:39Speaker 2: bunch of new shows are coming and that's what happens.
- 9:42Speaker 2: And the theaters, you know, the producers have to be
- 9:46Speaker 2: more discerning about what they're going to bring in. You
- 9:48Speaker 2: can't just bring in a movie that's been turned into
- 9:52Speaker 2: a musical. It doesn't work. The shows have to be
- 9:56Speaker 2: very creative, you know, they've really had to have to
- 9:58Speaker 2: have something behind them. I'm looking forward to like people
- 10:01Speaker 2: coming to Broadway in the next two seasons. In the
- 10:04Speaker 2: next season, you've got Julia Louis Dreyfus coming in. See
- 10:09Speaker 2: you have really some really good names. Now, yesterday they
- 10:12Speaker 2: announced that Julian Moore is going to be doing a
- 10:14Speaker 2: show off Broadway at City Center, which is really that's
- 10:20Speaker 2: very exciting, and that'll start in February. Laura Lenny's coming
- 10:24Speaker 2: in to do a play in February on Broadway. So
- 10:28Speaker 2: we're gonna start. We're gonna get a much more serious
- 10:30Speaker 2: season coming in. This season was not This season was
- 10:34Speaker 2: sort of scattershot. It wasn't that good. But you know what,
- 10:38Speaker 2: it's cyclical and it's never going to go away. Broadway
- 10:41Speaker 2: will be here long after we're gone.
- 10:43Speaker 1: All right, well, that's good to hear. Great stuff. Roger Freeman.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Check out his website. It's Showbiz for one one dot com.
- 10:50Speaker 1: There's a lot more stories here that we didn't get
- 10:51Speaker 1: to and there's new stuff everything.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Get ready for that eclipse.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Oh yeah, one o'clock today, But check out the website.
