• 0:00
[upbeat rock music] Good evening, listener.
• 0:21
Full Spectrum Cycling Show number 118, with the dulcet tones of Locust Street breezing by outside the open front door- Yeah... of the shop today.
• 0:31
I thought that the, uh, the, uh, construction thing was gonna last a little longer. Oh, that was so nice- That-... 'cause it was only one direction and there was- [laughs]... not a lot of drag racing and- Right, right...
• 0:42
bullshittery going on. Bullshittery. But alas, they've repaired the street. I don't know what they were doing, actually. I thought maybe the water mains or lateral lines.
• 0:51
Well, this is the Full Spectrum- They still go back and refill them... Cycling- Yeah, I think there's like, maybe it was lateral lines... Podcast. They're replacing all the lead in the neighborhood.
• 0:57
To my left, as always, is Sven. Oh, thank you. Thank you very much. Uh, to my right now is T Burger. Da-da-da-da. And our host for this evening's [laughs] festivities- [laughs]... Mr. JK Living. Well, hello everybody.
• 1:12
Boy, oh boy, what a weekend, huh? I tell you, eh- I wouldn't know. Oh, you were working on your house. On the house. Uh-huh. [laughs] Wah. I know. Well, okay, let's... Okay, always at least find somebody that has a map.
• 1:30
Yeah, that might've been a good plan. [laughs] That is my, yeah, lesson owed a half hour. [laughs] [sighs] It, it, it was the 37th running of the Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee. I mean, there's no wrong way to go.
• 1:44
No, true that. And I was kind of embracing that idea and, but there were some hens behind me that weren't- And boy howdy was it-... somehow gonna go on that one... a nice day out there.
• 1:54
This is the Fat Tire Tour Milwaukee recap we were speaking of. Yeah, we recapped it already, right? No, we just said it. It was a beautiful day. We rode. I got maybe sunstroke or heatstroke or- Yeah, we-...
• 2:05
a couple of two, three beers too many or something. [laughs] No, somewhere... No, there was a good pacing on that one. There was. Pretty good.
• 2:11
Well, because there were so many people, it was hard to get a beer, I mean, even if you brought your own. Which we did. We did. And- [laughs] Multiple times. [laughs] Uh, wizards- That's also a tradition...
• 2:22
it, it was also wizard staffs across the universe, which I completely spaced. Nah, I, I was aware of it, but- And then, uh, it's also, y- you get a makeup weekend next weekend though, if you really wanted to do it.
• 2:35
So that's good. What is this? I don't understand. Wizard staff, you know- You drink and then-... with, with the stacking of the cans and the duct- Stacking the-... taping of the staff I've never heard of this...
• 2:43
Let's see. Hey, we got a caller. Let's ask him if he knows what the hell a wizard staff [laughs] is. He does. Hey, wel- welcome to the radio program, caller. Who do we have on the line? Hello. It's Chewie.
• 2:54
[laughs] Chewie. Chewie. Chewie. Well, Chewie definitely knows what a wizard staff is, I would imagine. A- and I never get to participate. Well, it was, last weekend was the official day, I guess.
• 3:04
But, uh, owing to Stevil's, um, lack of remembering on a certain year, they, he did it the weekend after, and so now next weekend's a makeup weekend if he'd missed it this weekend or some such.
• 3:16
Does it, uh, can we, can we switch what day it is too? 'Cause I c- I can't really do it on, uh, I can't do it on Saturday, because I have to do, uh, a thing with the high school kids, and that would look rather,
• 3:26
uh- But how else are they gonna learn-... my short college... how to quaff big cans of- [laughs]... Buzz-A-Hall? They're hockey players. It's hockey players. It's bred into them.
• 3:35
Um, we were, uh, we were up in the, the... So it always falls on the same weekend as Back to the '50s up in Minneapolis, the, one of the biggest car shows around for cars under 1964 and older.
• 3:47
And so I'm driving a '62 Dodge pickup, and I can't really participate. And so- Well, yeah, you don't wanna, you don't wanna do that when you're driving- Yeah, that's-... a fancy rig like that... yeah. So it's 1964-
• 4:01
Around $10,000... and younger. Or older, I mean. Yeah, that sounds cool. Older. I, I think my buddy Mark just got a '60, it's a '64 like Chevy II kinda thing. Nova? Yeah, and it's got a motor- It w- it-...
• 4:14
that was built by a guy that makes marine motors, and it is the most insanely powerful motor in a car that's not a drag racing car. Where'd he get it from? Some guy down in North Cackalacky or Georgia- Okay...
• 4:25
or somewhere down there. Yeah. But I think the motor was built in Kentucky. I had a, uh, '67 Chevelle that was, motor was built by a guy that worked at Mercury Marine. Oh, there you go. A guy. Yeah.
• 4:36
Those guys know motors. I know a guy.
• 4:40
There's always a huge contingency of Wisconsin guys, um, from like the Madison/Milwaukee area that come over with their, um, I guess they would be considered traditional rat, hot rods or rat rods, whatever, whichever way you wanna go about it.
• 4:52
Uh, some friends of my younger son's, Casey's, that always has something kinda cool over there. Uh, that's, that's my thing. I like the rat rod style.
• 5:00
I like the found in a barn, but the underpinnings are actually usable and, uh, you know, modernized. But it just, you don't have to paint it. Just do a little patina on the thing. Yeah, exactly.
• 5:11
Oh, I hate the fake patina. Do it real or don't do it at all. Not fake, just- Oh. Okay, yeah, just leave it. Oh, oh, oh. Yeah, I'm not, I'm not faking it, except for on the River West 24 bike. I kinda fake it a little.
• 5:19
There, there, there, there is a nerve. I think I can smell a nerve. So what you- Well, don't even mention e-bikes... it's right up there with carbon. What you been up to? I'm telling you, man. Yeah, and e-bikes.
• 5:27
[laughs] Oh, Tony got to ride a fa- We, uh-... a fancy e-bike today. It was a, it's a Cheetah. Jesus Christ. Looks kinda like a chopper. It does. It was pretty- You should, you should look it up, Chewie.
• 5:37
You'll hate it... it was pretty badass. [laughs] Oh, it's having fun on that thing. It is fun. Dude, did you send me a picture of that? Maybe, like recently. It's like- You post-... kind of black and tan Yeah.
• 5:48
Looks like a- Yeah, I saw it... some kind of Irish, uh- Would you do it?... drink, a black and tan. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Chewie. Yeah, yeah. I see. It's on the internets already. Yeah. Okay. Yeah
• 6:03
So what do you got for us? What are we drinking today, guys? Oh, yeah. Oh, top of the hill. Hey. We're already at the top of the hill. Let's get, let's get the hill going here. We got the quick- [bell ringing]
• 6:11
There we are, top of the hill. Oh, that was a, that was a short but steep one. Uh, Tony picked up this here beer, so let him explain it to you. It is, um, from our,
• 6:24
one of our many River West breweries, uh, Gathering Place. Um, it is a... It's called White Rooster, and it's in the style of white tea pale ale. I know that sounds really ridiculous. It isn't as bad as it sounds.
• 6:41
It actually is, is... It's a very nice... If it was, like, 95 degrees out right now, this would be incredibly refreshing. It's a mere 5.2%. Oh, that's all, that's all- Thank God... that's all day quaffable right there.
• 6:54
Thank God. So it is, it is quite drinkable, and I think quite tasty, but it is on the light side. And you, Chewy?
• 7:06
I have a, um, there's a, there's a brew- We went to a brewery a couple weeks ago over in Otown called Foremost, uh, I don't know what they call it. Foremost, Foremost Cooperative. Um, it's...
• 7:18
Uh, every beer that we've had from them has been really good. Tonight I got their, um, Bob's Bock. It's a 6.8. Ooh. And it's very good. It's a really good bock beer.
• 7:28
I'm, I'm really happy with everything they have over there, and their food looked fantastic. Nice. However, um, we didn't have time to eat, so we didn't eat anything.
• 7:38
Um, and I will send you a picture of the coolest bar that's right across the street, uh, called Just One More, that looks almost like the bar that you were in, Greg. [laughs] Up north. Yeah.
• 7:48
Other, the, the M- the Mokwa Bar. And it- The Plywood Palace? Yeah, that was- And it just so-... pretty sweet...
• 7:54
and it just so happened that the, uh, the owner and her two sisters, uh, happened to come into the 63 Club the other Sunday night, and I have to go back there, 'cause that place is gonna be a riot. I can tell right now.
• 8:04
[laughs] The owner and her two sisters. Yeah. Walk into a bar. Broomhilda and Esmeralda and, uh... Cinderella's on stage. Uh, it was, uh- She's, uh, Cinderella's on stage, we're on the bar. Cinderfella.
• 8:19
Oh, Cinderfella, yes. I can't- It is Pride Month. [laughs] So, yes. Absolutely. Come on. Come up with the three most Mexican female names you can come up with, and that's probably their names. [laughs] Oh, right on.
• 8:30
Nice. That's a good thing. Wilhelmina. Any, any, any s- you know, fun place like that is definitely right up my alley. Uh, I might- Well, you know, it's, it's part,
• 8:44
it's part of that joke with Pat and Carrie and, uh, a large contingency of the Single Speed people, that we're gonna have one more, and then we're gonna have one more, and then we're gonna get the tab,
• 8:55
and then we're gonna have one more, and then we're gonna do a hard stop, and then we're gonna leave. [laughs] Which never goes that way. After one more. [laughs] Yeah.
• 9:03
Milwaukee ended up with, uh- But- Officially, the, like, state lo- gu- or city logo, uh, was... Or unofficial, I would more say.
• 9:15
It was validated by one of my, uh, colleagues at work and a linguist, going like, "Okay, one more and then we go," is the city motto, nice and quick. Oh. It was- In, in Latin or what? No. No. Oh. It, it was...
• 9:29
Yeah, it was him, it was somebody from OnMilwaukee.com, and then it was, I don't know, some local politician or something like that going like- Nice... "Can we all agree that this should be it?
• 9:40
So here's our unofficial," yada, yada. Nice. Trivia. Trivial. Yeah, exactly. That's the way, you know, so. Hey, here's some news for Chewy. Uh, I think I gotta get your show up. I gotta get the Brad and Barry show up.
• 9:53
But FullSpectrumCycling.com, that's, that's our thing now. Dun, dun, dun, dun. And I think I'm gonna put a hard stop on it at show 120. That's pretty much where you're gonna find us exclusively. What was that?
• 10:05
FullSpectrumCycling.com. In website, next show? As much as Fatbike.com has been our home and our lovely, you know- Yeah... s- it's been our home for a couple of years, but, uh- We must fly away from the nest...
• 10:15
we have our own- Such as I always... we have our own place now, and it's like I'm moving away from my parents' house, so. Speaking of own place, I saw the new podcast studio and I can't wait to be in there.
• 10:25
So for what, three weeks you're moving away from your parents' house? Or are you gonna go for a little longer this time? No, I think we're gonna be a little bit longer this time.
• 10:31
My daughter moved home, you know- Or I'll stay in my basement... recently, so. [laughs] Yeah. And she has a- So you- She has a python that she brought home with her... so you're, you're moving into the shop? No. No.
• 10:41
Dude. Well, no. We have a new podcast studio. We'll probably still do 'em from the shop on Locust until we actually move outta here. But at some point, once...
• 10:49
Hey, electricity's scheduled for July 5th over at the new spot, so it's actually scheduled now. That makes me super excited, since at some point we- Are they able to get material? Is that what they're waiting for?
• 10:59
They were waiting for a 400 amp fuse, which apparently costs, like, 2,700 bucks or something, and then a transformer so they can wheeze off the 4,800 volt transformer in the other building and bring all that power over to ours.
• 11:14
So apparently we're in good shape at some point- My-... in middle of July. My son was saying that, he works, he works for a wholesaler in electrical.
• 11:23
He says, when he calls his contractors and said, "This particular type of wire is in. If that's what you need, you better buy it now because it won't be here for more than two days." Yep. Yeah.
• 11:32
So I was wondering if that's the trouble you guys are running into.
• 11:34
Um, I think it was more of a plan that originally the, the, the initial plan was like, "Oh yeah, we can do that and it's gonna be, like, $90,000," and you're like, "Yeah, let's sort of revisit that and see if we can do it any different way."
• 11:47
[laughs] I ended up needing an extra 250 feet of, of 14/2, so I went to Home Depot and they actually had it, but it's about 40% more expensive than it was when I started this project. Yeah, it's...
• 12:03
Well, I think things are gonna start to come down, 'cause lumber's down, like, over 40% from its high. Yeah. But- You're, you're high. Yeah. I still need a whole lot of lumber. Good.
• 12:12
Wait another two months and it'll- I can't. Eh. You know that. [laughs] Tony- I need plywood... Tony's in the throes of, uh, needing to get his house- I'm gonna- D-U-N-DUN... done. I'm gonna do the low, low- What...
• 12:23
Going back to bicycles, what's the extended, uh, Sh- Shimano, Shimano shutdown going to do to the industry? I don't know. Malaysia- It's been going for another month now...
• 12:31
right, Malaysia is where they do a lot of their small parts, and, uh, yeah. Well, you know what? I mean, some stuff was already out till 2024, especially from Shimano, so does that mean, you know... I don't know. 30, 20.
• 12:44
Maybe. Some stuff should start getting- Maybe... built in the US of freakin' A again- Right... possibly. Right. I don't know. It's not like we don't have the, the talent pool and the knowledge.
• 12:53
  It's just, you know- Absolutely...
• 12:55
and, and, and, and with containers being 10 grand a container, and with unavailability and, and people paying exorbitant rates to get at the front of the line, might be cost-effective to start doing stuff here in the good old- Right...
• 13:06
US of A again. Good point. You know, fuel costs have gone up, so all that shipping- Um-... is gonna- Oh, hell yeah... make sense to make things in the United States again. Last week- Goddammit... last week, Tony...
• 13:17
Was it Tony, where you guys are, which, who was it, was talking about riding through the state fairgrounds? Yeah. Well, underneath the state fairgrounds. Um, so... [laughs] Yeah, so the car show that we're at this la-...
• 13:28
Oh, yeah, that's the cool part. So our- [laughs]... our fairgrounds you have to ride through.
• 13:32
And, uh, at the car show we volunteer to watch one of the gates, so I get to stand there and yell at bicyclists that, who thought they could ride through. [laughs] Nice. Yeah, the, but cyclists are good at that.
• 13:43
It's kinda like the George Plimpton effect. It's like if you know what you're doing and you know where you're going and you act like you should be there, you can really kind of- You can just totally do it...
• 13:50
blow by just anything. Unless you run into somebody who knows exactly the same thing. It's like, "Yeah, yeah. I know." Right, right, right. "I know, dude. I know. I know." No, my- No, no, no, no...
• 13:58
my dad was the g- [laughs] He was so good at that. He'd wear the, the photography vest with three cameras on, and he could walk in anywhere looking like he was part of the press, but he never was. Mm. Well, he- Nice...
• 14:07
I mean, he was, he actually was in the past. But yeah, he'd just be like...
• 14:11
And he's suddenly in front of Arie Luyendyk or some guy that just won the race at State Fair Park, and he's snapping pictures and like, [laughs] "Hey, man." People are like, "Who the hell is this guy?" [laughs] Hey, man.
• 14:21
You're doing a good job with that. How's it going? So, so many of the kids use it to get to, um...
• 14:29
Yeah, to go through the state fairgrounds to get to the, uh, um, the University of Minnesota Veterinary School and that, and their agriculture school's on the opposite side, so they all wanna ride through there on their bicycles.
• 14:40
Sure. And I get to stand there and say, "Nope. Not today. You're gonna have to come and do it without a bicycle." A- as I'm wearing a bicycle hat and shirt. [laughs] [laughs] It looks really good, I'm sure.
• 14:48
Yeah, thank, thanks, Dad. Yeah. Dude, what's up? Yeah, no shit. Who's that, who's that old fuck telling us what to do? Get out of there. [dog barks] Who's, who's barking in the background there? [dog howls] Oh.
• 14:58
Oh, it's the kids. Oh. [laughs] The deer, the deer are coming up earlier and earlier every day. It's ridiculous. Eh, they have a job to do. And is the weather as bitchin' there as it is here?
• 15:08
'Cause this last week has been just, like- Gorgeous... y- y- you could, this is like fall in the springtime. It's beautiful. Yeah. This is, yeah, this has been fantastic compared to what we've had the last three weeks.
• 15:20
We still wa- do you guys get any rain? We've got very little still. Um, it's sort of. We got hit pretty good a couple- It's little pockets... days ago. Mm-hmm.
• 15:27
Yeah, but it really- Just a pocket in a pocket in a pocket... Milwaukee, you know, being right on- We're little... the lake, it often dissipates before it gets here, or it will split and go north and south of us. Yeah.
• 15:35
And we're just sitting here going, "Where's the rain?" "Shit. Where's no rain again?" "Where's my rain?" But, uh, yeah, definitely the lake has a big effect on, on weather systems.
• 15:43
So they, they tend to peter out as they head over the lake from the west. It's cooler by the lake. It's cooler by the lake. Our trails are in fantastic shape. That's great. Yeah, that's- Yeah.
• 15:54
There, I rode, I rode, uh, one of the parks in Rochester that I haven't ridden for a while, and it's, uh, it was, you know, so it's, it was Eastwood.
• 16:01
So it was one of the first parks in Rochester that I put trails in before Charlie Tree and some others took it over and started actually making them legit trails rather than just following a deer trail through there.
• 16:10
But, uh, um, the kids have got out there, and the city seems to be okay with it, and they've thrown in a couple jumps over ravines, and they've got some, some lumber features to play on and, uh, a c- uh, a small tabletop that they made into a giant tabletop.
• 16:26
And it's very well done, and it's really fun to ride, and it's kinda spooky on a coaster brake.
• 16:32
[laughs] So I'm, I'm gonna put a picture of my coaster brake situation, um, uh, in the show notes, but I have one of, uh, one of Cialmoney's, uh, you know, superified Shimano ones. Oh.
• 16:45
[laughs] And I, I must have, I must have done something a little bit... Like, I didn't tighten up the, the, uh, the s- the strap that holds the torque arm, 'cause- Uh-oh... it bent all up.
• 16:54
But everybody wants to skid on that bike, and they just mash hardcore on it. Yeah. Of course. So, um, it just, it turned into this pretzel, which I was like, [laughs] "Oh, man. Uh, how am I gonna undo that pretzel?"
• 17:05
[laughs] 'Cause the, the frame it's on doesn't have, like, a, a, a... Actually, I'm gonna, I probably should have a dedicated mount welted, welded onto it so it doesn't do that ever again.
• 17:14
[laughs] But boy, oh, boy, it was, uh... Yeah, the shape you- Oh, yeah. What I-... the shape you will see is something you're like- Oh, yeah... "What the hell happened there?"
• 17:21
[laughs] Yeah, I arrived at the shop and- [laughs] Right away... and you just came out holding it going like, "This is not what anything should look like, is it?" Oh, no. [laughs] It needed...
• 17:28
I, well, and I'm not exactly sure. I can't... The, you know, our local supplier doesn't have the part, because 2024 and all that. So I had to bash it on the vice and s- [laughs]...
• 17:38
you know, try to smash it back into shape. I think it'll work again, but, uh, I, I don't know. I... [blows raspberry] Time and scars. There's a lot of things- Mind makes it...
• 17:46
there's a lot of things going on, because the hub is normally a 120, but I got a 135, so it has some spacers. So there's more leverage, and there's a little pin that goes... You know, there's all sorts of issues with it.
• 17:56
But maybe the whole thing here is I should just, uh... I don't know if we can 3D print one of those. That'd be kinda cool. Just- Probably... the, with the right bend- Oh, Bob, he's got a 3D printer...
• 18:05
yeah, to get right over to- He should be able to... right o- right over to the chainstay so it's in the right spot, so I don't need the extra length of levering it and all that stuff, so. But anyway, yeah.
• 18:15
When you see the picture- That might be Craig's problem there... you go like, "What the hell is that thing?" [laughs] Yeah. That's a pretzel. It's a pretzel break. Those are... It's a new thing
• 18:23
Mine has not stopped howling yet. I make, mine makes...
• 18:26
When I lock it up on some of the, like, if I go over, like, last night I was going over these little jumps with a hairpin turn right away, and it just sounds angry with me. It's, it's making
• 18:36
spoke-popping noises that are not coming from the spokes. [laughs] I don't know how much longer this hub's gonna hold up, but we'll see. Is this on, is this on your state bike? Yeah. Yeah. I, I'm, I'm still- It, yeah...
• 18:48
waiting for my five to show up. It- I'm super excited- It's gonna be... because it's gonna be very soon I, I was gonna say, they give you a, they did, they did kinda give you an estimated date, right?
• 18:58
Yeah, sometime, like, early July, so it's not that far away, and I'm like, "Well, we gonna have some fun with those bikes." And y- And you're getting the stock black ones?
• 19:07
Yeah, I'm getting five of those, and I'm not even sure I'm gonna sell any of them. I think we're just gonna beat on them and have fun with them- Mm-hmm... at least for a while.
• 19:12
[laughs] Yeah, I, I'm- You have to have a fleet... still debating about getting one. I'm still debating about getting one of the, the, uh, Grateful Dead ones. They're just too cool-looking not to have, I think.
• 19:24
[laughs] It's right up JK's alley. No shit. No shit. [laughs] You could at least get this, you could get the saddle, if nothing else. They got two saddle- Oh, no, I, no, I'm not, that's not, no, I'm not, I'm just, yeah.
• 19:37
I just had that same paint idea in a moment of awesome stoned clarity- Yeah, we, we did his, uh-... many years ago, and we already did it.
• 19:45
[laughs] We already did it on his bike in, in powder coat and beautiful hot rod colors. I know. I gotta look back at what the names were, 'cause it was, like, Cosmic Blue and- Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
• 19:56
they just had, like, sexy names, like Prismatic- Yeah, Prismatic-... and-... paint or colors name.
• 20:01
[laughs] No, I spent my vacation, like, coming up with, like, different, you know, patterns or whatever, and it was awesome. Well, I'm assuming we'll be bringing over at least a couple for Steel Is Wheel, is re- Wheel?
• 20:12
Steelers Wheel. Wheel. Steelers Wheel. Steel Is Real. Oh, yeah. A some smart aleck wants to call it Steelers Wheel now instead of Steel Is Real. I'm like, "Don't try to hijack my ride." Don't steal my wheel.
• 20:23
That's- It- That's what my wife calls it every time I mention it. [laughs] Steel Is- Oh, she, she's a clever one, too. Steelers Real? That Sue. Oh, yeah. Yeah. [laughs] No, she's just hard of hearing. What? Ah, right.
• 20:35
Hey, uh, here's a question for Ron, uh, Chewy, Ron Chewy, Chewy Ron, Chewy Ron, John Ron Ron Ron, Ron Jeremy Chewy Ron. Who put the bump and the bump, the bump, the bump.
• 20:44
Who put the bang and the bang, the bang, the dong. Uh, oh, so have you seen, uh, s- uh, Seely Dave's new website yet? No, uh, I, I have to go out and look at it. I, I did listen to his podcast.
• 20:57
Um, I was starting to wonder if this show is just, uh, that show you guys all you guys did was brag about Wisconsin this, Wisconsin that, and I'm like, "This is making my ears bleed a little bit," but, um- Well, I know, but you guys bring your-...
• 21:10
uh, it's, it- [laughs] You guys bring your mountain bike team over there- Oh... and you run around with it from Minnesota, 'cause I guess you got nothing over there to ride, so I'm not sure.
• 21:16
Well, you know, you- But, yeah, no, it's-... you, you like to- It wa- And the, the only thing is, is you do, you do realize that DJ has already been running a sand race for five years- In here?... down in Tucson.
• 21:29
Well, that's a good thing. Sand races are great. Oh, they're the bomb, yeah. And by, and, and by cracky- Yeah... the sand up there in the Bayfield Peninsula is, it's sand.
• 21:37
It's not like gravel with a little bit of sand in there. This is like beach. It's, it's sweet.
• 21:43
No, the pictures I saw, it looks like, it looks like the stuff that DJ runs, which is a, is, which is a dried out riverbed, and that's, and that looks exactly the same. Super fine- Oh, yeah, yeah... doesn't pack at all.
• 21:52
Very, very hard- Yeah. Yeah, it doesn't pack. You're right. Exactly. And it's all torn up by ATVs too, 'cause the majority of the race is on ATV trails. And he's doing- Oh, sure. Okay...
• 22:01
so it's 100 mi- the, the, it'll be 100-mile epic length race, blah, blah, blah. But- That's gonna hurt... to be fair- That's gonna hurt... to be fair to Mr. Schlabowski- It is... 'cause I really like his site.
• 22:12
In fact, I don't know how he does it, but everything he does looks really good, and he writes really well, and he has really great pictures, but it's called Life Above Eight, and that's E-I-G-H-T eight, not the number eight yet, although he's trying to get that.
• 22:26
But Highway 8, it goes across the state of Wisconsin, and once you're above eight, you're really up north. You're not... Up north isn't Wausau.
• 22:33
Up north isn't, you know, a bunch of other places that when people come from Chicago or Milwaukee, they go, "We're going up north." You know, it's like, no, unless you're above Highway 8, you're not up north yet.
• 22:43
So I would check it out, lifeaboveeight.com. Hm. And he's, it, it's just so clean. It's a great site. I'm, I'm kinda jealous [laughs] 'cause I always make my sites a little too busy, I think, or something.
• 22:56
[laughs] Um, I, can I plug a podcast? Absolutely.
• 23:04
Uh, so sometime this weekend, I hope, I'm going to interview, uh, Dave and Lisa, a couple friends of mine that did six more states over last week. So they're, they're doing 50 miles in 50 states in five years.
• 23:19
That's their- Hm. Huh... Dave retired, and so that's their, uh, their, their goal. Nice. And, and the best part about it is, is not only do they ride their bikes, they research it out a bit.
• 23:29
They usually try to do it on, on a, on a cool trail. But, uh, even more so, they find whatever exotic food is there for that particular state, like cool little dive places, especially.
• 23:40
So they, they, they send out the word now, so people are, like, looking for them. And they, they realize that they can camp in, uh, the Eagles campgrounds, especially, like, down in Florida.
• 23:50
They have big campgrounds for Eagles members, for Eagles Club members. And so they've, they've now added 50 states and 50 Eagles clubs with it. So they've got some go...
• 23:59
They're gonna come back and hit up some other ones. But yeah, they've been having a good time, so I'm gonna try to get an interview with them this weekend, I hope. And- Next week, for sure...
• 24:05
are they riding Bike Fridays or something of that nature? Yeah. Um, oh, that's a weird story. So Dave has had a Bike Friday for a while. Dave is a retired doctor from St. Mary's.
• 24:17
Um, when I met him, the easiest way to describe him was if there was something- Right... I had picked up from either you guys or somebody else on a bicycle, he was buying it immediately.
• 24:27
He lived in a house by himself with this giant, beautiful dining room area, and it was just- Full of nothing but bike parts that he just, he just
• 24:37
went out and quick bought because somebody else had s- bought one or said it was cool, and he bought it.
• 24:41
So, uh, so he's a super fun guy to listen to, and he, he's excited about life, and he's gonna be really fun to listen to. And Lisa is, like, the champion of eating anything that you would think is gross, she's trying it.
• 24:53
So she's good. She's gonna be a good a- And so then, yes, um, oh, I actually flew out and met, um,
• 25:00
uh, Scandinavia's Jesus in, uh, in, uh, Durango, and they posted on Facebook that they were in Denver, and I'm like, "What are you guys doing out there?"
• 25:09
And they were picking up another Bike Friday from a couple they bought in Durango. So we all went out one night in Durango. So, uh, this last trip they did it all on their e-bikes. Or on, excuse me, on- Ah! Ah...
• 25:19
on their Bike Fridays. Ah. Yeah. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah. Um, and by the way, and he is also, and Dave has also rode his Bike Friday from, his mother lived in St. Louis for a while, so he rode it from St.
• 25:30
Louis to Rochester probably eight, 10 years ago. Oh, right on. I like the idea of finding kind of the, I gu- I, I, I don't know if you call it indigenous food, but the, uh, the food that is- Identifiable food...
• 25:42
like, in Wisconsin, would you do cheese curds or, you know, bratwurst or something, and... Or would you look a little more upscale? But, you know, I'd like to, I'd like to know what every state's kind of like.
• 25:52
Kansas City, I'm thinking ribs, you know? There's certain things that you just sort of think of as a certain area. Yeah, and then one- But that, that de-... and then one under the other- But I got-...
• 25:59
and then you're going like, "No, what, what do the chefs eat?" Right, yeah, yeah. [laughs] No, I, that wa- that sounds like a good idea.
• 26:06
And, and they, and they take it to the next step, so they go to like, say they're in, they're in Maine, and they were looking for, what are they, uh, lobster sandwiches or whatever. Lobster rolls.
• 26:14
Lobster dish sandwiches. Yeah, lobster rolls. But they, oh, eat lobster rolls, that's it. They didn't want just go to any place to get it. They wanted to go, "Tell us the coolest- Yeah...
• 26:22
grooviest little place that makes the best ones ever," and they are going to ride their bikes to that place. Sweet. Sweet. Are they traveling by train or vehicle or car or airplane? How, how are they getting around?
• 26:33
Uh, I, I'm... That's what we're gonna talk about a little bit because they've be- they've been kinda doing a little bit of everything, I think. It depends on where they're going.
• 26:40
I mean, we could probably do a series with them because every state they've been to has been a rather interesting, uh, adventure for the most part- Sure, yeah... from what I can tell.
• 26:47
They've been to Florida a couple times and enjoyed, like, they rented a tent that was on a dock, and the manatee were swimming around them, and that's where they slept- Enjoying-...
• 26:55
for two nights type of stuff, you know? That sounds- Enjoying Florida just sounds like a strange- Uh, yeah. Well, you know, I mean-... definition of the word Manatees swimming around your feet, I like that idea.
• 27:02
[laughs] Enduring Florida. COVID shut them down from going to Europe and traveling, so they, they decided to do United States instead, basically. [laughs] I like the idea.
• 27:11
I, I haven't seen all 50 states yet, so I don't see why I would leave this continent to go to some other continent where I'm just gonna start wanting to see more stuff. It's like playing Risk. Come on.
• 27:22
I have not been to Kamchatka lately. [laughs] I mean, if you wanna win, then you start down, you know, in Micronesia, and then you build your empire from there- Mm. Mm... and that's how you take over the game. Right.
• 27:31
How'd you- But you have to lead with your heart, so I would go to, uh, Italy, of course. Oh, all right. Well, my, my mastery of Risk always goes through Kamchatka, just saying.
• 27:41
[laughs] 'Cause how else are you gonna get to North America? You gotta, you gotta go c- to Alaska somehow, just like the ancient people did before- Uh-... everybody was here. See, we're just getting deep here.
• 27:54
[laughs] I think that, I do think, I'll, I'll talk to them when they get here, but I do think Alaska's gonna be their next trip because they were actually hitting me up for microbreweries in Alaska.
• 28:02
Well, hook, hook them up with Travis, our, uh- Yeah... our, our, our, our Fat ambassador, and we got a lot of people up there that over the years we've been- Oh, yeah.
• 28:10
Well, those guys, those are the guys I want them to take them biking, and then I've got another friend who played hockey with a buddy of mine that owns, it's called Odd Man Rush, named after, uh, everything is named after hockey, um, at his, at his brewery.
• 28:23
Um, I should send you the link to his, his, uh, commercial he did during the pandemic and stuff about getting beer from him.
• 28:29
So it's, uh, it's a pretty, it's a, it's a pretty guy, guy s- guy type of, kind of, uh, bar, uh, taproom type thing.
• 28:39
Uh, JK took his headphones off, and I thought he was going to get his beer, and then he put them back on. I'm like, wait, what? Tony was out helping a guy, helping a guy came by.
• 28:49
What, what was that, what'd that guy want, Tony Berger? I dunno. Guy needed his seat adjusted on his bike. He needed his seat adjusted on his bike. Yeah, he's- Mine is Takara Mixte. Takara? Takara Mixte. A Takara Mixte.
• 29:00
A Takara was a great, that was a great... Actually, Olympic Supply used to be the distributor- Ah!... of Takara- Ah!... at least in the Midwest. Takara. All right, Ron, Chewie. Takara.
• 29:11
You got anything else for us today? Takara. I tell you what, guys. Oh. I have, I have to go to a meeting, uh, for a stock car race, believe it or not. Oh, cool. So- I love it... so, uh, it's, it is a big race.
• 29:24
We're gonna volunteer. I'm to get my high school kids to go down there and volunteer to help out, make a little bit of cash for the team. So- Right on... I'm gonna cut out. I will talk to you guys later on, all right?
• 29:33
Thanks, Ron. See you around. Chewie. See you later. All right. See you fellas. Everybody. Chewie. Thanks. Bye. 10-4, one-nine over. Oh, Tony was- All right, see you. See you, Chewie.
• 29:41
[laughs] Tony was, Tony was turn- I wanna say bye. Tony was turned down. I wanna say bye. [laughs] I was, uh... Actually, that's a good point there. Let me look at something here. I'm kinda curious about this. Uh-oh.
• 29:52
Uh, do a little experimentation here. Rabbit hole. Watch it. Wait, can I do this here? Put this thing over here. Just kinda curious here.
• 30:00
All right, Dan, I'm gonna turn Tony down, but I want Tony to say something, uh, say something right now, Tony Berger. Say something right now. Nothing. Oh, yeah, see, I thought, I, I dunno.
• 30:10
The, I was looking at some people that were saying these things on this board only affect the headphones. I'm like, no, they don't. Those things do. Yeah. These things affect, uh, whatever. Yeah, they're wrong.
• 30:19
If you got a Road Caster, don't ask me. I barely know how to use the thing, but- Um, yeah... thank- It's like asking me for directions. Yeah. It's like- Well-... yeah, I'm just using the force, man.
• 30:28
[laughs] It feels like it's over here, and if it's not, then it's, okay, maybe it went, like, a mile long. Eh. Eh. Eh. All right. All right, second week without Big Sexy, but that's okay.
• 30:39
We'll catch up with him at some point. The Hair. Hair. [laughs] All right, everybody. All right. And thank you very much for, uh- Podcast Serino... uh, checking in with us again, and, uh, probably be here next week.
• 30:51
Also, remember, show number 120, uh, that's gonna be the, that's gonna be the jump off point from- Oh... the fatbike.com Congratulations, everybody. I had a great time at whatever, um, tour of the toad races.
• 31:09
Oh, did you toad race? Oh, y- uh, yeah, um, at Downer and, um- Oh... today, today when, um, the Shorewood one is. Oh, yeah. Yeah. It was great. Right. It, we should g- be there- In the pa- Blah, blah, blah...
• 31:24
we will be there- Oh, yes... in the, in the past. In the past. All right then. All right, everybody. Good night. Good night.
• 31:34
  [upbeat music] [laughs]
