- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Maddie, welcome to the People Run podcast.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Jumping right in.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Um you've run more than once now a 228 marathon.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: You run 100 miles a week.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: You put in 12 hour shifts as a nurse.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Quite simply.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: How in the hell you make that work?
- 0:19SPEAKER_02: Um, it's something I'm definitely like still uh striving to like improve everything.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Um but I think a lot of it is like my work days are a little bit easier and then my big days are like pretty big.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: Like I got big mileage days those days, and then like my double threshold days aren't on work days, and you know that's a lot of mileage.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: And then um long runs, those are helpful once they start getting, you know, in the 20s, that helps a lot.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: But um midweek long runs, sometimes I'm waking up and starting my run at 4 a.m.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: so I can get like a 12 to 14 mile long run in there in the week.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Um I like usually don't double on the days I work, but once in a while it it just happens that way.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: So um, but still like something I'm I'm striving to like improve different little things every week.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: What kind of things are you working on now to like improve?
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I'm sure it's constant, you know, with shifts and works going left and right all the time.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: Um I think the biggest thing is like getting enough nutrition in.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Um, like the 12-hour shifts can be hard sometimes.
- 1:28SPEAKER_02: Like it you never know what you're gonna get in a hospital, like if you're gonna have time to sit down and eat, and you know, I try and take food that I have like that I can heat up and that's more nutritious, but sometimes it ends up being like a protein shake and a granola bar, and then like I have a bunch of billion little different snacks that I'm just trying to like get in as I'm like going between rooms.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: So it really just depends.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: Um, but probably my nutrition's the biggest thing I gotta work on with running that many miles and um working also because I'm on my feet pretty much the whole day, so it's like uh another time on feet element to the marathon training.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Do you ever track your steps at work versus the run?
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Like how many steps are you getting on average here?
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: I actually like don't really track them.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: Like I try and take my my watch off when I go to work.
- 2:20SPEAKER_02: I just like being like a little more free and not having like I don't know, something tracking everything, I guess.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: But um I'm sure it's a lot.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: Especially sometimes I work in the emergency room and those are the craziest days.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: Those are the ones that like you're literally you're never sitting down.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: So um the ICU days, once in a while I'll get lucky, uh have more time to sit down and chart, but I don't know.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: It just it just depends, I guess.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: How are you fitting sleep in and all this?
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: Um you know, sleep like that's another thing.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: I think my body goes off a little bit, less sleep than maybe most people will get.
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Um But I do think like there's things that I do sacrifice, like I try and not scroll at night before I go to bed, and like if I can I try and get to bed by nine.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: It usually ends up being around ten or something, but um that's yeah, it it that's another thing you gotta sacrifice.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: I guess there's certain things, right?
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: But sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't, and I've gotten kind of used to it where sometimes I wake up and I'm like, I just want to cry this morning, but then you start running and you feel okay.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: So walk me through like a day.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Like what happens when you have a brutal shift?
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: It's 12 hours and you got a second run in the evening.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Like, do you ever go, you know what, I'm not doing this run?
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Maybe I have a workout.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: Like, how do you manage shifting fatigue in the day up amongst your job?
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I would say if I have a double and I have to do it after work, like it's probably something I dread a little bit, but um I just like remember the bigger goal, I guess, and like what I'm working towards, and I just make sure I get out the door.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: I think like the best thing that helps me when I'm doing that is I try to do it before I go home.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Cause like if I get home, it's like ten times harder to get out the door.
- 4:15SPEAKER_02: So like usually I'll stop somewhere and go run.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Cause then like by when I get home, I'm home and I don't have to think about it again.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: So run gear in the car.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I do like to keep my running gear in the car.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: My backseat's very messy with all my running clothes, so and random things.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Do you keep gels in there too and nutrition and whatnot?
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: Um, I was pretty good at keeping gels in there, you know.
- 4:48SPEAKER_02: Now it gets like 90 to like 100 something in my car, so I haven't been keeping them in there as much, but um I usually will try and eat like some real food before I go run.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: If I'm doing like a long run or something or like a workout, I'll have some gels.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: But if I'm finishing my shift, I'll try and eat eat something.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: What whatever that is, but probably some granola bars or maybe I'll eat like my lunch later and then have a snack or something.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: What's a typical meal look like, you know, since you kinda on the go, you never know when you're gonna get the time to eat.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Like, do you have some favorites or are you just whatever I can put down?
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: Um, let's see.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: So for like breakfast, so before I go into work, it's like I do egos and coffee, and then I make sure I eat something else again before I go into the hospital so I can get more food in.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Usually like um have you those overnight oat things that you can like mix together?
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: Sometimes I do that, or just like I'll make eggs and toasts or something, and then I always take a protein shake with me for work, and then um usually like what other snacks are like applesauce is a go-to, um, some type of granola bar.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Um I'm trying to think what other things.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: I try and mix up my snacks, nuts, um, and then when I'm making like food to take, I usually take like rice a lot or just like leftovers of whatever I've made for dinner and hope that I can get that in.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: But yeah.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: I don't know, you got any good good go-to?
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Go-tos.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: Um I'm big on rice.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: That's part because I'm Spanish, but rice as a runner, you know, is is key.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: Is this great?
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: This might sound nasty, but sometimes I throw honey in on the rice to get more.
- 6:51unknown: Okay.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: I like it.
- 6:53SPEAKER_01: So I'll just do that.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sometimes I do that if it's like a bigger session.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Um I I've been meal prepping a lot, so typically what I'll do is I'll cook a lot of rice in bulk, like a lot of rice, or I'll buy the packets.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Um, similar to you.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Sometimes I don't have the time to like let me go make a whole nice meal.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: So sometimes I'll do the packets of rice, and then I'll just cook a bunch of protein, a bunch of chicken on the grill, a bunch of lean beef, you know, and put veggies in there.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: So when I got a prep, I could just throw it in a bowl real quick.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Uh and I'll do that and I'll buy like Costco frozen veggies and just kind of saute it in there.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: That's kind of my go-to.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: So I try to keep it simple lately.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Um, a lot of protein bars and granola, like you mentioned, because it's gotta be quick sometimes.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: I I try and go back to like the childhood sometimes where it's just like, oh, I got like a bunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or like I got a turkey sandwich.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Like, that's all I gotta pull out right for right now, but something, you know?
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, sometimes in a jam where like I didn't have time to meal prep today, turkey sandwich was it.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Yep, it works.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Maddie, I saw someone commented on one of your posts like, do they need to start also standing on their feet 12 hours to have your success?
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: I thought that was quite funny, but also like, hey, do you feel you get any extra advantage from standing all day on top of running and strength training um to run as fast as you do?
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Um, I do think there is some benefit, but I also think there's like a little bit of detriment to like I'm not I'm not recovering probably as good as like many people, honestly, but um I do think it is like toughening up my legs at the same time.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Um because the marathon is long and it's really hard, so my legs know how to be fatigued for sure.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: And um, I'm doing all my workouts on extra fatigue, so it's gotta work out hopefully somehow more.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: But um it's it's uh something I've just gotten used to.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: So it's it it works.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: How how do you manage like the leg fatigue?
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: You know, because I do similar.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: I mean, not at your level.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: You're running a lot more mileage than me, but like I'm sure most days you feel either maybe you feel flat, the legs are heavy, 12 hours yesterday, 21 miles the next day.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Like, how do you handle that?
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Do you just will power go or or there's some tips, take techniques you do?
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: Um, so number one, I think your mindset about things like really has a big power.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: So, like, if I like am going into something, like kind of already make an excuse of like, oh, I'm tired, I had a big shift yesterday.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: Like, I try not to go into workouts with those mindsets, but like also it is a thing.
- 9:38SPEAKER_02: So, um, I mean, like things I do to try and help recovery, like I'm a big believer in Epsom salt baths, like sometimes I feel like those are magical.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: Like I can get in, get out, and like, oh, I feel so much better, or like I'll use the Normotech or something, and then some days it's just like, oh, this is really hard, but like I just have to get through it, and I know it's gonna make me tougher in the end.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: So um yeah, I also think like my coach is really good at like trying to make my workouts work with my work schedule the best that we can, but um sometimes it's hard.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm interested in that.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Like, how do you maneuver workouts based off your work schedule?
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: Do you sometimes move her like, hey, I'm gonna be off this day, and you know, well, let's do the workout on this day versus this day because I have 12 hours.
- 10:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so what we typically do is like um I'll work like Monday and then like Thursday, Friday is like what I'll try.
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: Sometimes my schedule changes, so then we have to move things around, but um we try and do like so.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: If I work Monday, maybe like Tuesday would just be like a higher mileage day, and then we would do a workout Wednesday, so I had like a day to almost recover from my shift, and then like the Thursday, Friday.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Um, if I'm doing a workout on Saturday, then it's just like okay, like I worked two days in a row and we're just going for it, or sometimes it's um, oh, we'll do a workout Sunday.
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: So like trying as much as we can to get a day to recover before the workout.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I'm still running a lot on those days, but like I am not working at the hospital, so it does make it a little bit better when when that can work out, yeah.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: I think that's a great share for most people.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: Like I'm guilty of it myself in the past, like hey, I might have worked all day this week, but it's Tuesday, and Tuesday is the workout day, and no matter what, it's day.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it's fine, and you know, you roll through it, but sometimes it's like, man, you should have just moved it one day.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: Um and that would have been much better.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: I think it's just like kind of make sure if you can tell what your schedule's gonna be like, planning it out if you can.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: But I know um I have the three days and other crazy days, but other people have to work five days, and that can be harder too.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: So I like you have like you go into it with a great mindset.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: My question to you on that is like powering through those workouts.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Um like how how do you make that shift of just like I'm turning off?
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: It's four in the morning.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: You kind of maybe still thinking about it.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: How do you turn that mindset of like let's just stay positive, you know, here and like forget yesterday was yesterday, today's a new day.
- 12:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um I think it's just like keeping your goals in mind, and then I mean there's plenty of runs in those 4 a.m.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: where I'm like, like I'll be honest, I'm like, this is miserable, but like I want to do something big, so like I'm gonna keep I'm gonna keep breaking up at 4 a.m.
- 12:44SPEAKER_02: and I'm gonna get it done.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: And I think it's also easy to remind yourself like, oh like this is hard, but like this would be ten times harder if I did it after work.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, thank you for like getting to wake up early.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: I get to see the sunset or sorry, the sunrise every morning.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: That's nice.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: Maybe not in the winter time because the sun doesn't come up for a while, but but it is nice, like I I think it's a better run in the morning, so I like it.
- 13:11SPEAKER_02: I like it that way.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: And then uh I think I I like have a rule where I'm like, okay, I'm not allowed to like judge my run or my morning like until 30 minutes after I wake up.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: So that's when I'm waking up at four to go run, that's like a couple miles into my run.
- 13:28SPEAKER_02: So I usually feel a lot better like 30 minutes after.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: So I have the 30-minute rule.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: 30-minute rule, okay.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: Maddie, here's what's crazy to me.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: You weren't always a marathoner.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: You had a coach tell you no on the 800, and then you went into some steeple chases and running, and then now you're just crushing the marathoner.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Most recently a half.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Like, how did you end up becoming a marathoner of all things?
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, so the 800, um, I did that for three years in college, and then I moved to the mile, and then um after I graduated, I was kind of off like a you said the steeplechase mile kick, and then um, like as I was training for miles, my friends they they wanted to do CIM, and they're like, hey, come cheer us on at CIM, and I was like, well, you know, like if I go to a marathon, like I'm not just gonna cheer you on, like I'm gonna run it.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: And so I like five weeks before CIM, I'm training for the mile, and I'm like, oh yeah, I'm gonna run CIM and I'm gonna go out for the Olympic trials qualifying time and see if I can do it.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: And I think I was on to like mile 17 or 18, and then it was like, whoa, okay, like this is really hard.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: I had no idea about fueling or like anything.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: And um that was definitely that's been the hardest marathon for sure, is that first one.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: And then the next year I did the same thing.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Like my friends were like, come chase on at CIM, and like five weeks before I'm like, I'm signing up for CIM again, and I'm still training for the mile, but here we go.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: And then um that one was more like I'm not gonna put a time to it, and I'm just gonna like race and like have fun.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: I had a goal to just run like 615 pace, and um I think I just got faster and faster as I went, and like I was just like, wow, like that was so fun.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Like that's the most fun I've ever had in a race.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: Um, and so then I just asked my good friend Rory if he would coach me for the marathon.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Um and I was like, I want to hit the OTQ and I want to go for it.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: And originally I don't think I don't think I was ever thinking like, oh, I'll break 230 in the marathon.
- 15:42SPEAKER_02: I thought like, wow, it'd be great if I could hit the OTQ.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: And then um after training for the marathon for about six months, I ran uh 228 at CIM and it was crazy and it was so fun.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: Like I think the marathon is the funnest race to me, and I think if there's like a fun aspect of uh I never know what pace I'm running, like what time I'm on for.
- 16:06SPEAKER_02: Um and I'm always just running and like smiling and enjoying it, and like obviously it hurts so bad at the end, but like it's it's so much more fun to me than a mile or a steeplechase or any any other race.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: That's a lot there.
- 16:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Um let's let's talk about it.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: So at one point, you know, you had Rory coaching you.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: You started going like, wait a minute, this is this is fun.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: I feel good, I feel like I'm on good pace here for this this second go-round.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Like, what changed to make that happen?
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: So I think like I mean I got more marathon specific, I increased my mileage, um I learned more about nutrition, like I I really like did not like the first marathon I was I think I threw up like eight times, and I probably took like like four gels or something.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: And then the second one, it was like bad stomach issues also, and then the third one, like I had practiced so I could like keep down my gels, I had better nutrition.
- 17:13SPEAKER_02: Um, and then I also think like the biggest thing I already kind of talked about mindset, but um I had a different friend kind of talk to me about like how I was talking to myself because I think you know my friends would hear me talk about how I could race like when I was training for the mile and everything, and I don't think it was always the most positive.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: And so Gotcha.
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: Um I think I've like developed a new sense of belief just by like changing how I'm talking to myself and being more confident in like things that I can do, and um I've started like a ever since I started with Rory, I just started writing in a journal.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: Um it's kind of like a positive affirmations journal, just of like things that I can do and like um like my goals and things like that.
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: So I really think it's helped me shift from like a oh if something's not going right to like not going into panic mode and being like you hit your cues and you hit the positive things that you write to yourself every single day, and it helps me like keep going.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: And even if I'm not hitting like my goal for that workout or race, it's like okay, well this is making me stronger for something, like just like looking at what the more positive side of it.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: So when when do you write that journal in and your busy schedule?
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Is it like pre-run, later at home when I'm about to go to bed?
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Um if I do a workout, I try and do it like directly after the workout, and I try and write like three things that I did good about good in the workout.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: And then um if it's just like a regular day where I didn't do workout and I've just ran mileage, it's usually like before I go to bed.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: I'm curious, you mentioned some cues in there.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: Um which kind of sounded like not outcome related.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: I could be wrong, but what what are some of those cues you put in there?
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Um some of my cues would just be like to relax and push.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: I need to be running this pace.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: And I think you tell your body to relax, like you'll run the pace and it'll feel so much better.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: It's just like when you get it in your mind and you start getting so like focused on it, that um it makes it harder in my opinion.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: But um I think another thing is like um like lately I've been wanting to like actually race people and not like I don't want to let people go.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: Like I and so one of my cues has been like race to win or like close the gap, like no matter who I'm racing, like close the gap, close the gap.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: Because like if I'm just closing the gap as many times as I can, then I'm gonna stay with them longer, and then I'm gonna run faster and and uh I'm gonna have someone to run with so it'll be easier.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: So those are been a couple of my cues.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: No, that's awesome.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: You mentioned you're not really looking at pace as much, I'm sure, on your run.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Like, how do you do that?
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Are you running more effort based is what you're saying?
- 20:04SPEAKER_00: Like, hey, on the day of the race, I take my watch off.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: Day of the race, like I have my watch on.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Um, but I'm also like trying to just like get in a group and like once in a while I will look at the pace, but like I also like the marathon, I don't know at 30k, like I don't do all the calculations in my head before the race.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: Like, I usually just go run and I think that's why it's just like I'm just out there racing and I'm not having to think about like time, and I think that's that's the the best part about racing, and I think like more people should also try and do that.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Um more focusing on like right, like I said, like the cues are like the little steps in the race that are gonna help you like push you to your best.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: One thing I've seen you've shared a lot, you you speak a lot, and I may paraphrase this here, so pardon me, like not chasing the outcome as much, and you kind of hinted at it just before, like chasing the joy of the run and having fun on the run and what happens, happens, right?
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Obviously, you're trying to go fast and OTQ as we just mentioned, but like how do you how do you do that?
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: Like, how do because a lot of people are like I want to hit XYZ time, I want to do this race, etc.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: How do you do that?
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: I think a lot of it, like like we talked about cues, like if I start getting super super hyper focused, I go back to like one of my cues is like my process, and right the process is like that's like my cue.
- 21:25SPEAKER_02: Like, if I think start thinking like, oh, you know, like my goal, like say I want to go 225, like 225, 225, like hey, like that's that's outcome, right?
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: That's not my process.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Like my process today is like I'm getting the work in and I'm smiling, like, and I I think that's a big thing too, like smile.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Like when I do that in the marathon, I try and smile like so many times through that race because I'm like, wow, like I'm so lucky I'm out here doing this.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: So um I think I think yeah, those are those are my ways.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Smiling helps a lot, people.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: Everyone, everyone should just smile when.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: They're running because you're so lucky to be healthy out there running.
- 22:03SPEAKER_02: Um, I think there was one post I made like I do work in the hospital and I do see a lot of sick people, and um it's like I really do have thoughts when I'm racing of like someone I've taken care of that's on a ventilator, and like they don't even get a walk, like they can barely move in their bed, and um that that just keeps everything in perspective of right, of like how lucky we are that we get to move our bodies every day and have the health that we have.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: So I saw that post.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you were sharing um in a race you were thinking through of some of your patients, like that I'm sure drives you, but like doesn't it sadden you a little bit on the race sometimes, or are you just like, hey, I gotta go, this person over here is fighting for XYZ.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: I'm just trying to hit a fast race over here.
- 22:53SPEAKER_02: Well, I uh I think let's see, I I don't know if it was this like the second CIM or the third one that I ran, but I did run by and like I think I saw a care center and I saw like a little lady like sitting in a wheelchair and she was just like waving to the runners that went by like through a window, and and I did tear up like while I was running.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: But um it's hard, it definitely is, but like it also I think does help push me.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: Um it just makes me more grateful for like what I'm doing in that moment.
- 23:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, for sure.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: What are some of the lessons you learned through that?
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, going back to the juxtaposition of okay, one day I'm help helping people fight, and then one day I'm chasing my dream over here.
- 23:36SPEAKER_02: Like um, I think it's just like things I've learned is like don't take your health for granted.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: Um and then also just like when it's hard, remember that you can do it because like you're lucky to be able to be doing it.
- 23:55SPEAKER_02: So that's that's what I've what I've learned.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: And uh I don't know.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: I I still get like teary-eyed when I'm by my patient's side sometimes, and I think sometimes that carries over, but I'm like, I got on my run, and I think my run is a nice like also break from that sometimes.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm not always thinking about my work while I'm running, and I think that is the best like break is uh is my run.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Like that's what helps me also get the separation from work and like clear my mind too.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I saw one of your posts.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: Um there was a comment that says, like, hey, here's what it's like hanging out with Maddie at 4 a.m.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: insert this, insert this.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: Uh what's it like running with you at 4 a.m.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: here for you know 10, 15, or or 20 miles?
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Uh it's probably like well, some of my friends probably get annoyed because I'm sometimes a pace pusher.
- 24:53SPEAKER_02: I'm like, let's go, and they're like, it's 4 a.m.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Like, what are we doing?
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Um sometimes it's pitch black because and we can't even see each other, so but no, it's good.
- 25:03SPEAKER_02: I run a lot with like a friend who's a PT, so she's kind of got like the same schedule.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's it's always a good time, it's better with friends.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Um, I'll usually meet up with her like once a week and then a different friend maybe once a week too, but um I don't know, it's always better with other people.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: No, agreed for sure.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: That that's something I personally gotta work on.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Uh it's hard at four in the morning.
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: It's hard to find someone who's willing to do it with you.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: So are your friends just as competitive or they're just like, no, I want to see Maddie today?
- 25:38SPEAKER_02: No, like they're training for things too.
- 25:41SPEAKER_02: Like um the physical therapist that I run with, she just ran 234, so she's she's pretty good too, yeah.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Um my other one, my other friend, she uh she's training for a marathon.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: She's a little banged up, but she's just trying to get back in shape, so yeah.
- 25:58SPEAKER_00: Let's wish her a speedy recovery.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Maddie, there's a a message you shared the other day that because I know you left.
- 26:06SPEAKER_00: Um, there's no single way to look like a marathoner.
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Where'd that come from?
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: What's that mean to you?
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: And first off, for those listening who are not watching this, she was doing some crazy pull-ups and then some.
- 26:19SPEAKER_02: Um I I really like um just like you can be a strong person and like um you don't have to look a certain way to run a certain time, right?
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: I think that's just like my biggest, biggest thing um or message.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: A lot of times, like on that post, I a lot of times people like they're like, oh, like, do you like to sprint?
- 26:41SPEAKER_02: Like, whenever I tell them that I I run, or they'll be like, Oh, are you a soccer player?
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Or like there it's everything, but like, oh, you run marathons?
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Like, or you're a distance runner.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: They just assume you don't lift, basically.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they just they just assume I don't run long distance.
- 26:59SPEAKER_02: So, um so that's why I made that post.
- 27:02SPEAKER_02: I'm like, like you know, you you can run fast no matter what.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: Um you don't have to look a certain way.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: So uh I I do I do love seeing how many pull-ups I can do because I just think it's fun, but um that's my weekly routine is uh a lot of pull-ups.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: I do I lift twice a week.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Um and like a lot of it is like body weight, so I'm doing the pull-ups.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: Um I do squats like with a bar and weight.
- 27:28SPEAKER_02: That's pretty like that's pretty much like my biggest thing that I do with weights.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: And then I'll do like single leg squats, some like RDLs, um, sometimes jumping lunges, and then pull-ups and uh push ups.
- 27:44SPEAKER_02: That's pretty much it.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: I try and like make it quick, because I am running a lot, so yeah, running a lot, working a lot, gotta recover from it.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, fix certain things.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: How long's a given session?
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Uh 15, 30 minutes.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: Um, it's usually like it's I've if I'm hurrying, like and being really diligent, it could be like 30 to 35.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: If I want to be a little slower, then it's 45.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: And then I try and throw a little sauna in there after if I can.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Ah, okay.
- 28:20SPEAKER_00: Is that like something you're following you or you do a sauna protocol throughout the week?
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Uh I just try and do it.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: If I have time, I'll try and get in for like 20 minutes, and it's mostly so I can just get like heat adaptation is the main thing, but um I will be trying to do it a lot more, so in the upcoming months.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: Maddie, you ran a 228 and then you did it again at Boston.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: At what point did like 228 not feel that crazy anymore?
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Like, hey, this is just a typical marathon for me.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: Or does it even feel that way yet?
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, I do think like I have goals that are beyond 228 now.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: Like I do believe, like I I do believe I am faster than 228 runner.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: But um, I think after CIM I was like kind of like whoa, that that was crazy.
- 29:13SPEAKER_02: Like uh I think it was like a 10-minute PR at CIM and I so going into Boston, like I had goals to run faster than 228, but um I still was very happy that I ran 228 twice.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: Um and like Boston to me was a harder course than CIM.
- 29:32SPEAKER_02: So to still PR and run 228, like I was I was ecstatic.
- 29:36SPEAKER_02: So it was a good day, and hopefully faster times to come.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: When you were at the start line of that race, the second one, did you what did you believe you were capable of at that time?
- 29:51SPEAKER_02: Um at Boston I like the goal was uh 227 or 226.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: So um I think two twenty-seven was like a really good goal.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: And um I think it goes back to like I talked about I want to be more aggressive, I want to go out and I want to race people better.
- 30:10SPEAKER_02: And I think at Boston I kinda held back a little bit more at the beginning, and that kind of led me to like running a lot of miles by myself.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: Um and I think that was like the missing piece of actually hitting like what I think I was a little bit more capable of, but it will come.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: So next time.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was a masing race.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: I mean OTQ PR again.
- 30:34SPEAKER_00: Uh that must have been fun for sure.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Um most recently you had a half, I think I saw in like 71-ish minutes somewhere on there, another PR, like getting faster, obviously.
- 30:47SPEAKER_00: Like, how do you feel about that?
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: What's going on right now?
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Um the the half was a lot of fun, and like I think it was a minute, what was it?
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Like a minute 25 PR or something.
- 31:01SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think that one was also like I really like my main cue in that race was close the gaps.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: And I think those people that were up in the front, they like they really pulled me along.
- 31:11SPEAKER_02: And um, but yeah, I think things are starting to click really well, so I'm excited um for what's going forward.
- 31:21SPEAKER_00: I know you say you love the marathon, but how'd you feel about the half distance?
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Uh more fun, less fun?
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: I think the marathon's more fun.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Uh a half marathon kind of feels like a 10K that is 13 miles.
- 31:38SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: Uh not that I've ran very many 10Ks, but yeah, it just feels fast.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Does the does new half time does it make you rethink?
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: And it sounds like, yeah, but does it make re-make you think you're sealing right now?
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think so.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: Um I also, so I don't know if you know about this either.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: I ran a a mile too in uh Flagstaff, so at 7,000 feet.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: Um and horse records recorded.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I ran 441, which um technically like my PR is 438.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: So to go to 7,000 feet and do it on the road, I was like, oh, I kind of got like more wheels than maybe even I thought, like at the moment.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: So yeah, like I think it'd been uh both those races gave me a little bit more confidence, so it was good.
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: Are you intentionally working on speed right now, or is this you know where the season's at?
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, I've been doing like marathon training, but I've also like um leading up to grandma's like I was training for the half marathon, I wasn't necessarily doing like mile workouts.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: I think I did like one little speed session a week before that mile.
- 32:56SPEAKER_02: Um, and it wasn't even that big, but um it just kind of like got my legs spinning a little bit.
- 33:02SPEAKER_02: So so yeah.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: What surprised you the most so far?
- 33:09SPEAKER_00: Like all this running, you're getting faster.
- 33:11SPEAKER_00: I mean 7,000 feet and just very minimal seconds off your PR, like at sea level, who knows?
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: What has surprised you the most so far as you're getting faster and faster in this whole journey?
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: I guess like um how the speed is like coming along, whether that's like the mile speed or just like um if it's like 5k speed or you know, just faster things that aren't a marathon or half marathon, like it's crazy how much like my strength I feel like is helping my speed, I guess.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: Like it just feels so much easier.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: So I think that's the biggest surprise.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: So everyone should be listening, do their strength training.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: I'm curious to ask you, you know, doing everything you're doing right now, 100 mile weeks, getting faster, course records.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: You've OTQ'd like 12 hour shifts.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Um like what what do you say to someone out there like struggling to put all together?
- 34:11SPEAKER_00: Like what what do they underestimate or what does it take to compete at this level and do this?
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: Um, I would just say like you you you can't give up, right?
- 34:21SPEAKER_02: Like I'm uh seven years out of college now, right?
- 34:25SPEAKER_02: And like that first year I didn't really like train a lot.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: The second year I don't even know if I did really, but then like I was like, oh, I'm gonna do this because I love it, right?
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: And then like seven years later, like it does work out and like I do get a lot better.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: And I mean I still have goals that I'm still gonna keep chasing, but I do think like the biggest takeaway is like how I said talking to yourself.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: So not giving up, talking to yourself positively and then um yeah, just just keep pushing forward.
- 34:54SPEAKER_02: I think um there's lots and lots of hard things but um about running, but also like just be careful when you can run.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: I know it's hard to get out the door sometimes, but um just like find the good thing about it that will help you get out that door for the one day and then just take it one day at a time.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: So on that, you've you've OTQ'd now and it's pretty much been announced where it's gonna be at and all that.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: Um what scares you a little bit about you know heading into that or what are your thoughts going into you know OTQ and obviously you're getting faster now.
- 35:34SPEAKER_00: Like what's your thoughts around that?
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: I like that there's like more more time till the Olympic trials.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: Um just because like I guess I've been training now for the marathon for like literally like a year.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: So I'm happy to have another year and a half to train for it because who knows what can happen.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Um I mean obviously I'd just like to place as high as I can and who knows who knows how high that will be, but I would never count myself out of anything.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: Um and I think yeah, just going forward.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm excited to see to see what happens and how much faster I can get.
- 36:14SPEAKER_00: So fast forwarding a little bit and just using our imagination here, you line up at that that race.
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: It's OTQ day.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: What does that version of Maddie look like?
- 36:26SPEAKER_02: Um, I think I, you know, depending on where I'm at, but I would like to stick my nose in things.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: Um I wanna compete like like I'm telling yourself, I'm trying to tell myself, like I I belong with these people that are running these super fast times, and I want to go out and show it.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: I don't want to just say it.
- 36:43SPEAKER_02: So um at least I want to go try and do it the best that I can.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: So um on OTQ or on the Olympic Trials Day, like I hope I'm running there with really, really fast people, and um I'm gonna try and keep closing those gaps, like I said, over and over again.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: So Maddie, you see all you you train hard, you see hard stuff at work.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we're like patients, and you're doing hard things at work as well.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: 12-hour shifts, turkey sandwiches, etc.
- 37:16SPEAKER_00: etc.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: We've spoken about the turkey sandwiches.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: That's the hardest part.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: Okay, turkey sandwiches is hard.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: Hey, I love my turkey sandwiches.
- 37:26SPEAKER_00: Not the best solution, but I love mine.
- 37:28SPEAKER_00: Um joking aside, you see hard things, you're doing hard things all day.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: What do you find hard today in work running in this journey?
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: Like, because you're you're pulling it off essentially.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: Like, what do you find difficult?
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: Um, I think like the emotional aspect of my job is probably the hardest thing.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: Um like we talked about how I think about those things during races.
- 37:56SPEAKER_02: Like, there are some pretty big things that weigh me down on like the days I'm not at work, and I think that's just a part of being a nurse.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: Um you know, and uh just trying to stay healthy sometimes can also be a little hard.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: So um that's another thing.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Just just trying to stay healthy and uh be positive about that too, I guess.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Um, like I said, I do have less recovery and I am having to figure out all this nutrition things, and uh so little things are popping up sometimes, and uh I'm just trying to stay positive about them and uh keep going forward because I remember in college I I got injured a couple times and I always had this poor attitude and I don't think it worked out well.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna try a new a new uh approach to things when things go wrong.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: What what are some of those struggles to stay healthy, you know, for for those out there also working and and grinding it out?
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um I mean I think just uh like I'll just be honest, like I I have a little shin thing going on right now, and uh we'll kind of figure out what it is more uh later this week.
- 39:10SPEAKER_02: But uh that's something I'm gonna have to work through, and uh I've talked to my husband about it, and we're like, hey, like the best way to get through this is just making it one day at a time, and we like still keep the dreams alive.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: And uh if you go in with a like better attitude and you're just doing your best and everything, like that's gonna turn out way better than um if you're like why me, or like um get all sad and depressed about it, or or things like that.
- 39:38SPEAKER_02: So um I think like right now I have HB written on my arm.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: My husband's like, What what is this HB?
- 39:45SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, hope for the best and believe that big things are coming.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: So there's my mantra.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: Ah, okay.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: I like that.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: I gotta have some reminders every now and then, you know, for the for the tough times.
- 40:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:05SPEAKER_00: Maddie, I saw you shared the other day.
- 40:07SPEAKER_00: Work right now and running 100 miles is like two full-time jobs.
- 40:11unknown: Yeah.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: And you just touched on some stress and and working through it and you know, staying healthy and whatnot.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: Like, do you think at some point one's gonna have to sacrifice or I just gotta keep pulling this off?
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, I think right now, like, I'm just trying to pull it off.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I guess we'll see, like, injury-wise, like uh if if one did get a little affected or not, but uh I think like I've been able to do two two good marathon builds with it, and uh I'm going into my next one, and I think it still can be a really good marathon build too.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:47SPEAKER_02: Um and so I think like people can pull it off.
- 40:51SPEAKER_02: I think um there are like a lot of sacrifices that have to come with it though, right?
- 40:55SPEAKER_02: So like if you're so focused on two different things, there's other things like you know, like there's things you can you have to figure like you have to cut out of your life.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Like I'm not scrolling a ton, like I've deleted and reloaded Instagram so many times.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: Like I don't get to get ready in the morning very much, like I just get ready in five minutes and go out the door, like so.
- 41:19SPEAKER_02: There's things you just have to kind of sacrifice to make your other things more focused in your life.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: Which I understand people have like other things like kids.
- 41:30SPEAKER_02: Like I don't have any kids right now, so that makes that a lot easier for me.
- 41:33SPEAKER_02: So I understand like there are people out there they have even more priorities probably, but um I guess it it's just about figuring out a routine that works for everyone and the and uh the life that they're living at the time.
- 41:46SPEAKER_00: So no, I love that on sacrifices like you know, not scrolling.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: We talked earlier, like I I also go to that.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: I can't scroll anymore if I want to have success.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: What what other sacrifices when you have a full-time a lot of workload like do you make?
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: Um is there no Netflix, no TV?
- 42:10SPEAKER_00: Uh probably going out is is one.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: Like, what are some of your sacrifices is what I'm getting at.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 42:17SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, like I told you, a lot of my friend time is running.
- 42:21SPEAKER_02: And outside of that, like I still hang out with friends, but um, there's definitely a lot of times where I'm like, well, I gotta go home and uh maybe like go to bed because I got work tomorrow or something, right?
- 42:31SPEAKER_02: Or like I have to wake up at four in the morning, right?
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: And so like I do sacrifice some of my sleep, but I'm trying to also not make it four hours instead of six.
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: So um, like I'm not saying don't hang out with your friends.
- 42:44SPEAKER_02: I definitely hang out with friends.
- 42:45SPEAKER_02: Um, but there's just like you gotta have a balance in everything, I guess.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: Um and TV, I do watch TV.
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: I love reading books, but like I also try not to watch TV before bed because it keeps me up.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: So there's just like different things.
- 43:03SPEAKER_02: You gotta figure out what works for you.
- 43:05SPEAKER_00: Definitely a balance for sure of uh figuring out that balance of what sacrifice, what not.
- 43:11SPEAKER_00: So I can totally relate to that.
- 43:14SPEAKER_02: And we all know the runner veg.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: You're like, oh, I just want to lay down and do nothing sometimes.
- 43:20SPEAKER_02: But um but yeah.
- 43:25SPEAKER_00: We we've kind of hinted at this, but Maddie, what would you say is your biggest why right now that's worth all these sacrifices?
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: Um I think I got a couple whys.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: Like I've written the whys down before the marathon, and uh like some of those whys have been like do it for all the people that I take care of every day.
- 43:44SPEAKER_02: Like that's a why.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: I think do it for uh like myself, like I wanna see um like how good I can be.
- 43:55SPEAKER_02: I also do want to like inspire other people, like even just even if it's just a nurses, like you can have a life um outside of the hospital.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: I think like nurses do have a lot of stress um and like a lot of uh kind of like this imposter syndrome at work and like they get caught in a trap of just like work kind of becomes their life.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: And I hope that like nurses can see like you can do things in your life that bring so much joy outside of that hospital.
- 44:27SPEAKER_02: So um, I think that's another why.
- 44:30SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah.
- 44:36SPEAKER_02: And I think that goes too for like any other person working.
- 44:39SPEAKER_02: I think just like following your dreams, like um you don't have to be all all just focused on running for it to go right.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: Like people can hit their dreams and have so many other great aspects of their life, and I and I want to show that.
- 44:56SPEAKER_00: Love that.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Maddie, thank you for coming on the People Run Podcast.
