- 0:00The reality To some, the thought of spending an isolated period
- 0:05of time during a turbulent series of storms inside a
- 0:10lighthouse would be a strange and seemingly scary predicament
- 0:15to be in. The waves crashing against
- 0:18walls, rain and hail pelting the windows, and the roll of Thunder
- 0:24surrounding you. Not knowing when and if the
- 0:28weather would yield. Certainly it would take a mental
- 0:33toll on a person. It seems that some would break
- 0:37under these conditions and others wouldn't, and those that
- 0:42broke perhaps would never leave. Such a place we're discussing
- 0:47today is the Seguin Island Lighthouse located in Maine.
- 0:53And this haunted Maine lighthouse holds dark and
- 0:58chilling secrets. The Seguin Island Lighthouse is
- 1:04Maine's second oldest lighthouse.
- 1:07The explorer Samuel D Champlin discovered Seguin Island in
- 1:121612. He commented that it looked like
- 1:16a giant tortoise. The name Seguin is said by some
- 1:22to be a corruption of a Native American word that means place
- 1:28where the sea vomits. Others claim that it originates
- 1:34from a Native American word meaning hump.
- 1:37Either way, it's entirely appropriate given how it looks.
- 1:42In June of 178655 local merchants petitioned the General
- 1:48Court of Massachusetts for a lighthouse on Seguin Island.
- 1:54The petition noted that the island of Seguin seems to be
- 1:57designated by nature for this purpose, and it stated the
- 2:01opinion that if there was a light upon this island, many
- 2:06vessels would be saved from shipwreck and many persons
- 2:10preserved from immature deaths. At that time, there were only
- 2:15three light stations on the coast north of Boston, at
- 2:19Thatcher Island, off Cape Anne, at Portsmouth Harbor in New
- 2:24Hampshire, and at Portland Head in Maine.
- 2:29It would take nearly a decade, but the lighthouse would be
- 2:32approved by then President George Washington.
- 2:36By April 1795, a site had been chosen and a request was posted
- 2:42in local newspapers for proposals to build an octagonal
- 2:48wooden lighthouse tower on the stone foundation and a one story
- 2:54wood frame dwelling. A newspaper notice in late
- 2:58October of 1796 announced that the buildings had been completed
- 3:03under the supervision of Henry Dearborn, who would later become
- 3:07the Customs Collector in Boston and Secretary of War under
- 3:12President Jefferson. Seguin's first keeper, appointed
- 3:16in March of 1796 at $200.00 per year was Major John Polaricki, a
- 3:25Hungarian Hussar, an account who was born in France who fought
- 3:30with French troops during the American Revolution.
- 3:34His family had been Hungarian nobility and they dated back as
- 3:38far as 16/13. He had settled and dressed in
- 3:42Maine and was their town clerk for 25 years until he applied
- 3:48for and was granted a position as a keeper of Seguin Island
- 3:53Light in 1898. His meager salary was unfit for
- 3:58living off the island in such harsh conditions due to its
- 4:03remote exposed location and he constantly requested increases
- 4:09in his salary but was always denied.
- 4:13His brother-in-law, Christopher Bushard, served as his assistant
- 4:18with him and initially brought his wife briefly to the island
- 4:22where they had their first child, Jane.
- 4:26However, Pusher didn't get his family to stay as relations were
- 4:31strained between the two men. After serving for eight years in
- 4:3718 O 4, John died penniless on the island.
- 4:42For years afterward, some say his ghost has haunted the
- 4:46keepers who came after him. Known as the old Captain, John's
- 4:52ghost would become all too familiar to some.
- 4:56One incident closer to modern times occurred after the
- 5:01lighthouse was automated in 1985.
- 5:05The supervisor in charge of the crew to move the furniture
- 5:09reported months later that he was woken up by a ghost.
- 5:15He claimed that several times as he slept inside the lighthouse,
- 5:20as rain hammered the structure, his bed began to ferociously
- 5:26shake. Waking up in a panic, he sees at
- 5:30the foot of his bed an older man dressed in oilskins, grabbing
- 5:38and shaking the bed near his feet.
- 5:42The entity asked him not to take the furniture away and to leave
- 5:47his home alone. Convinced he was simply in a
- 5:51deep dream, the supervisor decided not to oblige the
- 5:55captain's ghost. The following day, he decided to
- 6:00move the furniture anyways, as he and his crew had been paid to
- 6:05complete it that day. All the furniture had been
- 6:08successfully loaded onto a boat, which was being lowered into the
- 6:12water. But as it lowered, suddenly the
- 6:17cable mysteriously snapped the ship and all of its contents
- 6:22fell and would spill onto the rocks below, smashing everything
- 6:27into pieces. In the years since, many
- 6:31responsible and credible volunteer caretakers who have
- 6:35signed on to help upkeep the lighthouse, along with the
- 6:39occasional tourists, have reported various sightings of
- 6:44multiple entities as well as experiencing paranormal events.
- 6:50Items have been moved inside the house or tossed from shelves and
- 6:55on to the floor, Mysterious cold spots seemed to appear at
- 7:00random, tools would often disappear as if someone or
- 7:06something was playing a trick on people, and doors have been
- 7:12observed opening and closing. Oddly, when the caretakers move
- 7:17the furniture, it is sometimes restored to its original spot
- 7:22the following day, as if something invisible had moved it
- 7:26all back. Some have reported hearing
- 7:29coughing from an unseen force, as well as whispers and the
- 7:35sighting of an older man dressed in oilskins.
- 7:41The old captain isn't the only entity that seemingly dwells the
- 7:44grounds of the Seguin Lighthouse.
- 7:48This following story is one of legend and has been very
- 7:52difficult to find documentation, but it is perhaps the most
- 7:56tragic incident that has ever occurred on the island.
- 8:01According to the legend, around the mid 1800s, a caretaker or
- 8:07keeper of the beacon, newly married, brought his young wife
- 8:11out with him to tend to the light.
- 8:14Not used to the isolation of the island, his wife quickly became
- 8:19increasingly bored and depressed, constantly
- 8:23complaining about not having anything to do.
- 8:27Thinking it would occupy her and keep her mind off the boredom,
- 8:32her husband ordered a piano and asked it to be brought to the
- 8:36island just before winter would set in.
- 8:40Upon its delivery, he proudly presented it to her.
- 8:44After numerous attempts to get the piano up the side of the
- 8:49rocky ledge. Once it was up, it was carefully
- 8:54hauled into the keeper's house with the hands of many friends.
- 9:00His wife was delighted, but she couldn't play without sheet
- 9:04music. Fortunately, though, only one
- 9:08song had come with the piano. It was a simple Scott Joplin
- 9:13tune. Soon afterward, when winter had
- 9:17set in, the island was frozen. No other deliveries, despite
- 9:24their best efforts, could come in isolated.
- 9:28More than ever. Together, the man's wife would
- 9:32continually play her piano, playing the same song over and
- 9:39over and over again. The isolation and constant
- 9:46playing of the same tune over countless hours and days began
- 9:51to take their toll. The husband of the couple began
- 9:55to lose his sanity, finally reaching his breaking point.
- 10:01He had had enough. He took an axe and with a fit of
- 10:06fury, chopped the piano into pieces following the outburst.
- 10:13Once the shock had subsided, his wife bitterly complained.
- 10:19He would then turn on and attack her, ruesomely chopping her with
- 10:26the axe. Within hours, it seemed that the
- 10:31man had finally come back to his senses, but realizing the
- 10:35horrendous act he had committed, he decided to turn the axe on
- 10:42himself today. Some say that on the Kennebec
- 10:47River during foggy nights, you can hear the ghost of the
- 10:52lighthouse keeper's wife playing the same ghostly tune on her
- 10:58phantom piano out over the waves on those still calm evenings,
- 11:06many Mariners and former keepers have claimed to have heard some
- 11:11kind of piano tune playing over the waters as well.
- 11:16These 3 ghosts have been claimed to have been seen or their
- 11:22presence felt by numerous visitors and volunteers over the
- 11:27decades. Among other entities, some of
- 11:31which I was unable to find origin information on, is the
- 11:36one of a young girl and her story goes like this, moving on
- 11:43to the island with her family in the early 1900s as her father
- 11:49took the position as a keeper at the lighthouse.
- 11:53She was the only child of her two parents.
- 11:56The island is isolated, lonely in cold.
- 12:03There are no other children to play with or much to do for a
- 12:07young child to stay entertained. One of the activities she tried
- 12:13to preoccupy herself with was throwing rocks down into the
- 12:17water from the cliffside near the lighthouse.
- 12:22One unfortunate day, as the rocks near the edge were
- 12:26slippery from the mist, the fog surrounding the island, the poor
- 12:33young lady would slip and meet her demise, falling onto the
- 12:39rocks and waters below. It is said that she still
- 12:44lingers on the island and does everything she can to entertain
- 12:49herself and interact with those who happen to visit her forever
- 12:54home. She has been witnessed by many
- 12:57running playfully around the gardens, laughing and smiling,
- 13:03playing hide and seek with visitors for all eternity.
- 13:08She's been seen not only by visitors to Sea Guine Island,
- 13:12but also by previous keepers who called the lighthouse their
- 13:15home. She's been witnessed running up
- 13:18and down the stairs of the lighthouse, waving to her
- 13:23onlookers, tapping people's backs, only to have them turn
- 13:27around to catch a fleeting glimpse of her small feet
- 13:31running away and phasing out of her vision.
- 13:35There are a few things I would like to mention before we go.
- 13:40Considering the location, I wonder if the lighthouse or the
- 13:45island is indeed haunted. Could it have perhaps started
- 13:50with the misfortunes of the late captain?
- 13:54Or was it something else, perhaps a battle of sorts where
- 13:59a tragedy occurred there or near there, tainting the land?
- 14:06It's hard to say, but with the age of the lighthouse and given
- 14:10what we know about its history, I wouldn't be surprised if
- 14:14spirits still dwell there. Maybe it is a beacon for souls
- 14:20as much as it is for ships. And this isn't a sponsorship,
- 14:26but I wanted to provide the following details because I
- 14:29think it's very important to fund and preserve history
- 14:32whenever possible. Seguin Island is a little over 2
- 14:37miles offshore from the mouth of the Kennebeck River near Fort
- 14:41Popham and Popham Beach State Park.
- 14:46The lighthouse grounds and museum are open to the public
- 14:49and lighthouse tours are provided.
- 14:51During the summer, the Fish and Trips Boat, also called the
- 14:56Seaguin Island Ferry, provides daily 30 minutes services during
- 15:01the summer season to ferry people to the island.
- 15:06And for those who want to try and investigate the lighthouse,
- 15:10there are overnight rustic accommodations available for
- 15:14members of the Friends of Seaguin Island.
- 15:18You can contact the Friends of Seaguin Island at
- 15:22seaguinisland.org. I would encourage all of you to
- 15:26go and experience places for yourselves whenever possible,
- 15:31especially historic places to help preserve them for future
- 15:36generations. But I will warn you, be careful
- 15:41and be respectful because if you aren't either, you might just
- 15:47become the newest permanent resident of the isolated island.
- 15:55Thank you all so much for watching this news episode.
- 15:58While I investigate cases for other videos, sometimes it's fun
- 16:02for me to go and check out more historic places and learn about
- 16:07the story surrounding them. So if you enjoyed this video,
- 16:10please give it a like subscribe with notifications on, leave me
- 16:15a comment and share this around on any and all social media

- 16:26when YouTube doesn't seem to like our content as much these
- 16:29days. There will be a new and
- 16:31terrifying case for an episode coming out very soon and I did
- 16:37want to thank you guys as always for supporting me.
