Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, and welcome in to another episode of DiCecco Daily.
- 0:11Speaker 1: It's Andrew DiCecco, Eagles beat reporter for InsideTheBirds.com. Friday's injury report.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Not practicing. Wide receiver, Hollywood Brown.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Ankle. Tight end, Dallas Goddard.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Knee.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Limited for the Eagles. Running back, Tank Bigsby. Abdomen. Outside linebacker,
- 0:28Speaker 2: Jonathan Grenard. Pectoral. Running back, Will Shipley. Foot. Wide receiver,
- 0:33Speaker 2: Devontae Smith. Hamstring.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Full participants, running back Saquon Barkley, stinger, defensive tackle Jalen Carter, wrist,
- 0:42Speaker 1: safety Drew McCuba, knee, and guard Tyler Steen, shoulder. So
- 0:47Speaker 1: the big one here is Saquon Barkley being a full participant.
- 0:51Speaker 1: And look, I think he's going to have a huge
- 0:54Speaker 1: role on Monday night. Needless to say, whenever he's available,
- 0:58Speaker 1: he's always going to. But Sometimes those stinger injuries tend
- 1:03Speaker 1: to linger, and I talk a little bit about this
- 1:06Speaker 1: on the previous podcast. So it's good that he went
- 1:10Speaker 1: from limited to full, and that's what you want to
- 1:14Speaker 1: see in terms of the progression throughout the week. So
- 1:17Speaker 1: that was the big takeaway. When we got out there
- 1:20Speaker 1: to the practice field... I was immediately looking for Saquon
- 1:24Speaker 1: and Devontae, and I also picked up that Will and
- 1:28Speaker 1: Tank were out there as well. So the backfield is
- 1:31Speaker 1: getting healthier at the right time. The big one will
- 1:35Speaker 1: be Friday in determining the game statuses.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Normally it's Friday. It'll be Saturday this week with the
- 1:42Speaker 1: Eagles playing on Monday night. And that's where you'll be
- 1:45Speaker 1: able to see the game statuses. So I'll be keeping
- 1:48Speaker 1: an eye on Tank and Will and.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Devontae, of course.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Devontae will hear from him likely on Saturday to Friday.
- 1:56Speaker 1: get his perspective on the hamstring injury, the Bears game,
- 2:00Speaker 1: some of the things that he was able to do
- 2:03Speaker 1: when looking back on his performance in the Tennessee game.
- 2:06Speaker 2: So it's always good to hear.
- 2:07Speaker 1: From Devontae, and he's usually the last day of the
- 2:11Speaker 1: week in terms of media availability. He usually speaks. We'll
- 2:17Speaker 1: be keeping an eye on Devontae when we're out there
- 2:22Speaker 1: for practice on Saturday morning. Weather is supposed to be
- 2:27Speaker 1: pretty horrid in this area, but I've got to make
- 2:32Speaker 1: sure that I can get out. I'm flying to Chicago.
- 2:36Speaker 1: on Sunday morning so looking forward to that hopefully the
- 2:40Speaker 1: winds and the torrential downpour don't alter my travel plans
- 2:45Speaker 1: but we will get more clarity on the statuses of
- 2:51Speaker 1: those players if the weather is not great in Philadelphia
- 2:55Speaker 1: on Saturday I imagine the Eagles will be practicing indoors
- 2:58Speaker 1: but So that's the injury report there. The one that
- 3:05Speaker 1: I thought was interesting was Hollywood Brown with the ankle.
- 3:08Speaker 1: He didn't practice and He had a couple carries for
- 3:12Speaker 1: 12 yards in the Titans game. It's an interesting one
- 3:15Speaker 1: because I think that there's a way that you can
- 3:18Speaker 1: get him involved, and the Eagles did a little bit
- 3:21Speaker 1: against the Titans.
- 3:22Speaker 2: He does have good speed.
- 3:24Speaker 1: He's good on those toss plays where you can get
- 3:27Speaker 1: him the ball in space and allow him to take
- 3:29Speaker 1: advantage of his ability to create yards, and he can
- 3:32Speaker 1: pull away from defenders. So that's another one that we'll
- 3:36Speaker 1: be certainly highlighting here. As we move towards the final
- 3:40Speaker 1: practice day of the week. Got a chance to hear
- 3:45Speaker 1: from Jordan Mailata. In the locker room.
- 3:49Speaker 2: On Friday.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And he had some good things to say. He was
- 3:53Speaker 1: talking about. The Jalen Hurts. On this particular occasion. And
- 3:59Speaker 1: he said. I guess I got. Let's see. Cool as
- 4:06Speaker 1: a cucumber. just how he is every day. You know, there's,
- 4:10Speaker 1: he doesn't skip a beat and he's just very consistent.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Riding the waves.
- 4:17Speaker 1: And he said, I mean, that's just who Jay is,
- 4:19Speaker 1: you know, and did a really good job this past
- 4:22Speaker 1: game of being a great example of that and leading
- 4:24Speaker 1: by example too.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Let's see. He says.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Continuity along the offensive line, Continuity in practice with each other.
- 4:41Speaker 1: What have you gotten out of this week? And he said,
- 4:44Speaker 1: just understanding Cam's tempo. And then for Cam would be
- 4:47Speaker 1: Drew's tempo. And then for Drew, it'd be Steen's tempo.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Just working on the timing on, again, the silent cadences
- 4:55Speaker 1: and then working different techniques. We all have a different
- 4:57Speaker 1: kind of body tempo, body movement. And then just the
- 5:01Speaker 1: more steps you can keep stacking together and the more
- 5:04Speaker 1: reps you can keep stacking together, especially for me and Cam,
- 5:07Speaker 1: you know, the better we can be on the same
- 5:09Speaker 1: page and just understand if there is a hiccup that
- 5:12Speaker 1: needs to be handled, we're able to together.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Figure it out together.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So the run game, that's been a big topic of conversation.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And Jordan was asked if there's any common themes that
- 5:32Speaker 1: point to maybe why things haven't clicked yet. And he said, again,
- 5:37Speaker 1: probably not finishing off some of the blocks, taking the
- 5:40Speaker 1: wrong angles, not being detailed. Those are two of the
- 5:45Speaker 1: things that stuck out. But we're right there, honestly. We're
- 5:50Speaker 1: like right there. You see it on film, you think, ah,
- 5:53Speaker 1: We were just, you know, if we just put our
- 5:56Speaker 1: hat front side here or had our hand placement more
- 5:59Speaker 1: down the middle and not really on the backside of
- 6:01Speaker 1: a shoulder pad, you know, it's those little things. Those
- 6:05Speaker 1: little details matter and I think they get overlooked a lot.
- 6:11Speaker 1: I think the run game is a very detailed world
- 6:13Speaker 1: that is not as simple as knots and crosses.
- 6:17Speaker 2: It's not.
- 6:18Speaker 1: And, you know, you got to win. You got to
- 6:21Speaker 1: win your down. And it's not just the first and
- 6:24Speaker 1: second down.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Win the down. The down lined in front of you.
- 6:27Speaker 1: And so executing your technique with detail and execution is
- 6:30Speaker 1: a must. And that's where we're going into this game with.
- 6:39Speaker 1: Jordan Mailata last year was pretty complimentary today. of chicago
- 6:44Speaker 1: pass rusher austin booker number 94 and i found that
- 6:47Speaker 1: interesting because booker is athletic he's a speed rusher but
- 6:52Speaker 1: he doesn't have necessarily the stats that are top of
- 6:57Speaker 1: mind when you're thinking of edge rusher so i found
- 6:59Speaker 1: that to be interesting and i asked jordan about what
- 7:03Speaker 1: is it about his game that really stands out what
- 7:05Speaker 1: does he do and he gave a really good answer
- 7:10Speaker 1: He said, I think he was just a very unorthodox rusher.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And then in the game.

- 9:44Speaker 4: That's Q-U-O dot com slash birds.
- 9:48Speaker 1: He just, again, presented that same thing, just very unusual
- 9:52Speaker 1: in his technique, but it worked.
- 9:54Speaker 2: It works, you know?
- 9:55Speaker 1: Got a nice little shake to him, got a nice
- 9:57Speaker 1: long arm and a very smart IQ, and in terms
- 10:00Speaker 1: of getting to his move to the rush and seeing
- 10:03Speaker 1: where the QB is at and bleeding back in. Like
- 10:07Speaker 1: you see that on film, he does that a bunch
- 10:09Speaker 1: and it's like, again, again, you don't, You don't really find,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I'm reading the transcript. You don't really find
- 10:19Speaker 1: that too much with, I guess, your everyday rusher, guys
- 10:22Speaker 1: who they don't look for the QB. Sometimes they just
- 10:25Speaker 1: try to beat you with the move and the next
- 10:28Speaker 1: thing you know, they're 10 yards up the field and
- 10:32Speaker 1: our quarterback's about seven yards. But Austin's real, real quick
- 10:35Speaker 1: to get to his move, have eyes to see where
- 10:38Speaker 1: he's at, and then what's the next move? So keep
- 10:42Speaker 1: an eye on Austin Booker. Jordan spoke highly of him
- 10:44Speaker 1: last season, and you just heard that answer there. It's
- 10:49Speaker 1: making me want to look more into his film about
- 10:55Speaker 1: some of the unorthodox qualities and maybe how that differentiates
- 10:58Speaker 1: himself from some of the other rushers. So I wanted
- 11:02Speaker 1: to ask him about that. Austin Booker and what stands
- 11:05Speaker 1: out to him about his game. So there's a little
- 11:08Speaker 1: bit of a background in terms of hearing from an
- 11:10Speaker 1: offensive lineman and Jordan's perspective. I always love hearing Jordan's
- 11:15Speaker 1: perspective on everything.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Quinion Mitchell.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Quinion Mitchell is someone who's going to take on a
- 11:22Speaker 1: pretty talented group of Bears wide receivers, albeit there's going
- 11:26Speaker 1: to be a backup quarterback getting the ball to them.
- 11:30Speaker 1: But Quinion has had a good season. I think Reek
- 11:32Speaker 1: Wollin has had a good season to start. And he
- 11:38Speaker 1: spoke about the lack of turnovers. Is that on players' minds?
- 11:42Speaker 2: He said....
- 11:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think we had the same situation last
- 11:47Speaker 1: year and then we just kind of got a little
- 11:49Speaker 1: struggle right now. And do you find guys pressing, pounding
- 11:57Speaker 1: to try to get like an interception or anything like that?
- 11:59Speaker 2: He said, yeah.
- 12:04Speaker 1: How important is the run defense this week in particular,
- 12:06Speaker 1: given what you guys played, these guys on Black Friday,
- 12:09Speaker 1: and they had a good day on the ground? He said, yeah,
- 12:12Speaker 1: it's important every week. Stop the run, and it's tough
- 12:14Speaker 1: to stop the pass. So I feel it's very important
- 12:18Speaker 1: for them outside guys, Corners and me, and Reek to
- 12:22Speaker 1: come up and tackle and stuff like that to help
- 12:24Speaker 1: the defense. Does Vic, on a week like this, emphasize
- 12:28Speaker 1: it more, or is it business as usual? He said, no,
- 12:30Speaker 1: it's business as usual. You know, every week we've got
- 12:33Speaker 1: to stop the run. He gave a good evaluation of
- 12:38Speaker 1: Reek Wohan, his counterpart at Outside Corner, and he said, Reek.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Playing good, man.
- 12:44Speaker 1: I feel like he's been taking the next step. You know,
- 12:48Speaker 1: he helped me get better. He'd be raising the bar,
- 12:51Speaker 1: so I feel like he's been playing great. Quinion said,
- 13:00Speaker 1: I think it's going to stay the same with regard
- 13:07Speaker 1: to the offense. Spoke about the wide receiving core, which
- 13:12Speaker 1: I talked about with Roma Dunze and Luther Burden. He said, yeah,
- 13:15Speaker 1: very versatile, very good group, and obviously strong with the catch.
- 13:20Speaker 1: You know, Luther Burden, they got guys they can make
- 13:24Speaker 1: attempts on offensively. Do you have to plaster a little
- 13:31Speaker 1: bit more? If Caleb was out there at least, does
- 13:33Speaker 1: that change a tiny bit?
- 13:35Speaker 2: Yeah, but, you know, Keenum and Bajent, if he plays,
- 13:42Speaker 2: they can do something, you know.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Uh, he spoke again about Reek, about what he, what
- 13:52Speaker 1: he's learned from him personally, um, personality wise. He said, yeah, man,
- 13:58Speaker 1: he's a great guy. He's a great dude. Always willing
- 14:01Speaker 1: to learn, giving out pointers to me. So it's been
- 14:04Speaker 1: great with Reek so far.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Excuse me. Uh, Let's see. We got Jake Elliott here.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Talking about it being four years since he was in Chicago.
- 14:43Speaker 1: He said, it's always nice. I mean, it's always cool
- 14:46Speaker 1: going back for me. I always enjoy it. I mean,
- 14:49Speaker 1: I think we got like 20 plus or post-game passes
- 14:53Speaker 1: that I'm dealing with now. So that's an extra challenge.
- 14:56Speaker 1: But it's always good playing in front of some buddies.
- 15:00Speaker 1: I grew up with family and everything. So.
- 15:08Speaker 2: He was talking.
- 15:08Speaker 1: A little bit about the different kicks that he has
- 15:16Speaker 1: in his repertoire. He said, honestly, we have a bunch
- 15:18Speaker 1: of different kicks in the arsenal, so whatever we feel
- 15:20Speaker 1: best that day doing, we'll see how this meeting of
- 15:24Speaker 1: the minds goes, but we'll see. When talking about, in
- 15:34Speaker 1: reference to the knuckleballs and things like that, Yeah, it's
- 15:39Speaker 1: been a good start for Jake Elliott. I think he
- 15:41Speaker 1: was a player that a lot of folks had questions
- 15:43Speaker 1: about going into the season so far.
- 15:46Speaker 2: So good. He had a good training camp.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I talked about the one practice where I think he
- 15:51Speaker 1: made six in a row, kept moving backwards. It was
- 15:54Speaker 1: pretty windy on that particular day. He might have missed
- 15:57Speaker 1: one in the joint practices at New England, but so
- 16:00Speaker 1: far so good.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And you don't hear a lot of criticism.
- 16:03Speaker 1: About the kicker or a lot of skepticism or angst
- 16:07Speaker 1: because he's delivered when his number's been called. So I
- 16:11Speaker 1: went into the season saying, look, he's had a good camp.
- 16:15Speaker 1: We'll see if the translates give it time. And you're
- 16:19Speaker 1: seeing so far some positive early returns. As I mentioned,
- 16:25Speaker 1: the Eagles are back on the practice field on Saturday morning,
- 16:29Speaker 1: I think 12-10 or 12-15 or something, and we'll get
- 16:36Speaker 1: a better sense of where some of these injured players
- 16:38Speaker 1: stand as the final injury report comes out later on Saturday. Oh,
- 16:43Speaker 1: I also spoke to Eagles quarterback Andy Dalton.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Thursday.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I talked about just what he's observed from Jalen in
- 16:55Speaker 1: terms of just grasping the offense and that was sort
- 16:58Speaker 1: of that idea came to me just listening to Sean
- 17:03Speaker 1: Mannion and his observations on how Jalen has become so
- 17:09Speaker 1: comfortable so quickly within this offense and he talked about
- 17:12Speaker 1: the ownership and knowing exactly what needs to be done
- 17:16Speaker 1: and his function in it. He spoke about what he
- 17:19Speaker 1: does behind the scenes to kind of help and And
- 17:24Speaker 1: I asked him, what keeps the fire burning? You're 16
- 17:27Speaker 1: for you. And he said, I'm still having fun. When
- 17:31Speaker 1: you leave the game, you can't get it back.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And so.
- 17:36Speaker 1: He still likes the different challenges and the different competitive nature.
- 17:42Speaker 1: And I asked him, how do you keep things competitive?
- 17:46Speaker 1: And he said, well, it could be on the practice field,
- 17:49Speaker 1: could be even in the weight room and things like that.
- 17:51Speaker 1: But he's still having fun, and that kind of shows.
- 17:55Speaker 1: It showed itself in training camp, certainly, that he's still
- 17:59Speaker 1: enjoying this game. I also spoke to him about tennis.
- 18:02Speaker 1: He's a big tennis player, and I asked him about it.
- 18:05Speaker 1: That background, he plays about at least, he said, five
- 18:09Speaker 1: times in the offseason. He said his wife plays as well,
- 18:12Speaker 1: so that makes it easier when you have someone who
- 18:15Speaker 1: you can play the game with. He talked about his serve, obviously,
- 18:19Speaker 1: which translates from his throwing motion, but he also talked
- 18:22Speaker 1: about his backhand. I think he mentioned that he has
- 18:25Speaker 1: a one-handed backhand. It's on his bucket list to get
- 18:28Speaker 1: to Wimbledon. And I said, when are you going to
- 18:30Speaker 1: get there? And he said, we were going to go
- 18:34Speaker 1: this year. Sounds like next year's the plan. But big
- 18:38Speaker 1: tennis fan, Andy Dalton.
- 18:39Speaker 2: And also, he likes to play guitar. So naturally, I
- 18:44Speaker 2: gravitate to that.
- 18:45Speaker 1: And me being a big music fan, he started playing
- 18:50Speaker 1: in high school.
- 18:50Speaker 2: He said he's pretty much a four-chord guy.
- 18:52Speaker 1: Mentioned Oasis' Wonderwall as the first song that he really
- 18:57Speaker 1: learned to play along with. Really interesting guy, Andy Dalton,
- 19:01Speaker 1: and he's been around for a while. And I was
- 19:04Speaker 1: really curious to hear how his perspective on Jalen and
- 19:12Speaker 1: this offense and his role. How does he keep things
- 19:16Speaker 1: interesting when he's not on the field? I also asked him,
- 19:20Speaker 1: as a fellow Andrew... Sometimes folks will call me Drew
- 19:24Speaker 1: for short. But I said, was it always Andy? How
- 19:26Speaker 1: did you land on that? He said, pretty much from
- 19:29Speaker 1: the beginning, he was Andy. And I said, he said
- 19:32Speaker 1: every once in a while he would hear Andrew. And
- 19:34Speaker 1: I said, maybe when you got in trouble or something
- 19:36Speaker 1: when you were growing up. He said, yeah, every once
- 19:38Speaker 1: in a while. But he's pretty much always been Andy.
- 19:41Speaker 1: But I think he's a really good resource to have
- 19:43Speaker 1: in that quarterback room.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I maintain that. I've said that throughout the summer.
- 19:48Speaker 1: When you have someone that's been in the league for years,
- 19:50Speaker 1: now 16 years and has experience in this offense, that's
- 19:53Speaker 1: an invaluable asset to have in the room. So I
- 19:58Speaker 1: liked hearing his perspective.
- 20:03Speaker 2: On that.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And I will put together a locker room notebook, some
- 20:06Speaker 1: interesting things that I can expand on Jordan Milata's comment
- 20:11Speaker 1: on his quote on Austin Booker I found to be interesting.
