- 0:08Speaker 1: This is Kevin Sports Furry Daily here on Radio Folkston,
- 0:11Speaker 1: bringing you the Folkston and Hive Sports Show. On today's show,
- 0:20Speaker 1: we have reports on our local cricket scene. We have
- 0:23Speaker 1: a report on the Folkston Senior Park run, news of
- 0:26Speaker 1: the new Romney ten k some Friday evening, a mixed
- 0:29Speaker 1: hockey results and fixtures, and if I get time, I'll
- 0:37Speaker 1: chuck in a roundup of my sporty weekend. We have
- 0:44Speaker 1: a special item on the agenda. Last Sunday, Radnor Park
- 0:47Speaker 1: Junior Park Run celebrated their very first birthday with balloons,
- 0:51Speaker 1: cake and a bit of music. And I'm lucky enough
- 0:54Speaker 1: to be joined in the studio by run directors Roy
- 0:56Speaker 1: Atkins and Tom Wells, who will be telling us all
- 0:59Speaker 1: about what it takes to organize a junior park run.
- 1:06Speaker 1: So let's get the show on the road now. I'd
- 1:07Speaker 1: love to start the show with an anthem, and what
- 1:13Speaker 1: better to get the show on the road with a
- 1:15Speaker 1: bit of bon Jovi and It's My Life sing.
- 1:26Speaker 2: A song for the brook.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Wow, we're a great to do anthem to start the
- 1:41Speaker 1: show there, and I love starting the show with a
- 1:43Speaker 1: sporty anthem. Okay, so we are in the studio now,
- 1:46Speaker 1: and we're joined by two park run junior run directors.
- 1:50Speaker 1: So let's say hello to Roy Atkins. Good morning, Roy,
- 1:52Speaker 1: how are you good? Hang on, let me just turn
- 1:55Speaker 1: you on. There we go first school Boy era. I
- 1:57Speaker 1: just start again, Hello, Roy, how are you now? That's good? Yeah? Right?
- 2:01Speaker 1: And Tom are you okay?
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah? Thanks?
- 2:03Speaker 1: keV good right? Okay, So so Roy, but come to
- 2:06Speaker 1: you first. The first thing I did pick up was
- 2:08Speaker 1: that I believe you're also an event director as well
- 2:12Speaker 1: as a run director. So what's the difference between an
- 2:14Speaker 1: event director and a run director.
- 2:16Speaker 3: So the run directors are in charge on the day.
- 2:19Speaker 3: They are the ones that ultimately there for organizing the volunteers,
- 2:23Speaker 3: making sure the event is safe, and they're in charge
- 2:25Speaker 3: of that event on that day, and we've got a
- 2:28Speaker 3: team of five and we rotate the way through that.
- 2:31Speaker 3: The event director really is making sure the paperwork's done.
- 2:34Speaker 3: It's kind of one of those administrative roles. We make
- 2:37Speaker 3: sure that if anything comes down from HQ, some new
- 2:39Speaker 3: rules or new directives or what changes we might need
- 2:43Speaker 3: to make in the future, any surveys about our particular
- 2:46Speaker 3: park run, that it tends to be the kind of
- 2:49Speaker 3: responsibility the event director and sort of the yearly paperwork
- 2:53Speaker 3: with the council making sure the insurances. When Parklin renew
- 2:56Speaker 3: their insurances, you submit that to the council. So a
- 2:59Speaker 3: lot of paperwork.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Yeah, oh okay, right, and now Tom, you are one
- 3:03Speaker 1: of the five. We will mention the other event directors
- 3:06Speaker 1: because they all need a little pat on the back.
- 3:08Speaker 1: You're one of the five event directors. But you've also
- 3:11Speaker 1: wear another hat, don't you with your social media? So
- 3:14Speaker 1: what does that include?
- 3:15Speaker 4: I do so each week I sort of take the
- 3:18Speaker 4: photos at the event as well, and then we compile
- 3:21Speaker 4: those into sort of a little video which we put
- 3:24Speaker 4: out on Instagram. It's just a nice little thing to
- 3:28Speaker 4: sort of showcase what we do each week.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I'm sure the kids love seeing this. I was running
- 3:32Speaker 1: and they're coming in. But of course you've always got
- 3:34Speaker 1: this issue with so many children around about pictures of
- 3:37Speaker 1: children that if you like parents or carers, they want
- 3:42Speaker 1: their children photographed. Does that present any problems?
- 3:48Speaker 2: Not really.
- 3:48Speaker 4: We do ask us part of our pre race brief
- 3:51Speaker 4: in every single week that we highlight that we take
- 3:54Speaker 4: photos and we ask the parents or careers guardians to
- 3:57Speaker 4: come and see us and just let us know, and
- 3:59Speaker 4: we just make sure that those don't end up on
- 4:02Speaker 4: any of our social media that goes out.
- 4:04Speaker 1: That's fair enough. Yeah, okay, So so Roy, let's come
- 4:08Speaker 1: back to you. Let's tell us a little bit about
- 4:09Speaker 1: your sporty background. You got a running.
- 4:12Speaker 3: History, reasonably recently. So it was sort of pre pre
- 4:17Speaker 3: two thousands. A friend of mine who's actually doing his
- 4:21Speaker 3: two hundred and fifty part run this Saturday, he started
- 4:24Speaker 3: doing part run. I thought what's this all about? So
- 4:27Speaker 3: I went along and then kind of been hooked ever since,
- 4:30Speaker 3: and I've just done an event after event and yeah, yeah,
- 4:33Speaker 3: I really really enjoyed.
- 4:34Speaker 1: All right, So you started running out of the park
- 4:36Speaker 1: round is yeah, yeah, that's good. That's interesting. Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:39Speaker 3: I've done some sports before that, martial arts, but it
- 4:42Speaker 3: was the actual running side of it. And now I've
- 4:45Speaker 3: sort of progressed into triflons as well.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Oh do you yeah? Yeah? All right, where have you
- 4:49Speaker 1: done a triflon? Now?
- 4:50Speaker 3: Did the High Bay? That was yeah?
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, in fact, we had them. He was
- 4:54Speaker 1: there on Sunday and do you know what he kept
- 4:58Speaker 1: it quiet? It was his birthday, Max Ransley.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yeah, he's been sitting there before now, so I know
- 5:03Speaker 1: all about the Hive Bay. Oh right, so that's that's
- 5:06Speaker 1: great news. And what about you Tom? How did it
- 5:08Speaker 1: all start for you?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 5:09Speaker 4: So in my young years I was a keen rugby player,
- 5:12Speaker 4: finished up in my early thirties and decided I needed
- 5:15Speaker 4: to keep active. So again Pegwell Bay Part Run was
- 5:20Speaker 4: my first one back in twenty fifteen and I've been
- 5:24Speaker 4: doing them ever since. But again, like Roy, I've also
- 5:27Speaker 4: sort of dabbled in a few triathlons.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Over the years.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Where have you done yours?
- 5:31Speaker 2: Again? High Bay was my first?
- 5:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I've also done one over at Bodiam Castle a
- 5:35Speaker 4: few years back.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Bodiam Castle? Where do you swim? Is there a mote
- 5:40Speaker 1: around the castle? I've heard about these swims in the moats.
- 5:43Speaker 1: They get a bit el guy and weedy, don't they?
- 5:46Speaker 2: Some of them they can do?
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, yeah, I think there was an earli issue
- 5:49Speaker 1: wound you up at Leeds Castle there was too much
- 5:52Speaker 1: weed or anyway. We've digressed this, so let's ask you Rouer,
- 5:59Speaker 1: how did you start? And did your enthusiasm for park
- 6:03Speaker 1: run and make you think why haven't we got a
- 6:05Speaker 1: park running folks?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Yeah? So generally after park from we we sort of
- 6:10Speaker 3: head towards a Catholic coffee and cake afterwards, and we've
- 6:13Speaker 3: been talking about it and and Trevor was kind of
- 6:17Speaker 3: sort saying, I've kind of initiated this, but I'm struggling
- 6:20Speaker 3: a little bit. And I said, you know, with my
- 6:23Speaker 3: project manager hat On, I said, well, I'll give you
- 6:25Speaker 3: a hand. I said, I'm sure we can work together
- 6:27Speaker 3: towards this, you know. And it took a good year
- 6:30Speaker 3: and a half to get to get up and running.
- 6:34Speaker 3: We were quite lucky. So the funds, which normally is
- 6:36Speaker 3: the hardest part to raise, we we got that through
- 6:39Speaker 3: Susie Ullman, who's the I think she's the treasurer of
- 6:42Speaker 3: the I think it's Friends of Regnar Parks of Charity
- 6:44Speaker 3: that helped you to the park and Regna Park and
- 6:48Speaker 3: they were able to help us out. So that was that.
- 6:50Speaker 3: That bit went quite quickly. Liaison with the council went
- 6:54Speaker 3: quite quickly to get permission because obviously it's council run land,
- 6:58Speaker 3: but I think it sits under lawd Ragna. But the
- 7:01Speaker 3: hardest work was with part run themselves. I think they
- 7:05Speaker 3: just overwhelmed with the amount of requests for new events.
- 7:08Speaker 3: But the area coordinator Hannah Perry, and she was absolutely brilliant.
- 7:12Speaker 3: She got email email after email from me to try
- 7:15Speaker 3: and push them along and try and push them along,
- 7:18Speaker 3: and eventually it happened. But he did take quite a while.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, and until maurd Did you get involved with
- 7:24Speaker 1: the junior part run?
- 7:25Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 7:25Speaker 4: So, like I said, I've been involved sort of doing
- 7:27Speaker 4: part runs myself for the last sort of ten years.
- 7:29Speaker 4: And I got my girls, my children into to do
- 7:33Speaker 4: in part run and we were venturing over to Ashford,
- 7:35Speaker 4: over to bets Hager each week from Folkston, and I
- 7:38Speaker 4: got to the point I thought it's a bit crazy
- 7:39Speaker 4: that we've got over four hundred people every week at
- 7:41Speaker 4: the adult part run on a Saturday, and I thought
- 7:44Speaker 4: we need one in Folkstone. And I contacted park around
- 7:47Speaker 4: HQ with with the idea. And fortunately these guys had
- 7:51Speaker 4: already sort of.
- 7:52Speaker 1: So they already said oh yeah, said well, I didn't.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Know any of them beforehand, but they put me in
- 7:59Speaker 4: contact and and I sort of gladly joined joined the team.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Right. So, back in those early days, how many run
- 8:06Speaker 1: directors or do you need a minimum of a quota
- 8:10Speaker 1: of run directors to actually go ahead that's a good question.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I'm not one hundred percent sure if there's a minimum,
- 8:14Speaker 3: But we start with five and we've still got five
- 8:17Speaker 3: to day.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Oh you've got the same five yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:20Speaker 3: So yeah, it's been a pretty solid team all the
- 8:22Speaker 3: way through.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And obviously people want to go on holiday, so you
- 8:28Speaker 1: all cover for each other. But do you if you've
- 8:30Speaker 1: got all the five and you're all available, do you
- 8:32Speaker 1: kind of just do it a week about? So if
- 8:36Speaker 1: you've got all five of you, just just take it
- 8:38Speaker 1: in turns.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Yeah, We've got like a two weekly rotor, so I'll
- 8:41Speaker 3: do it for two weeks and then I'll have a
- 8:43Speaker 3: four week gap while the other guys. Oh I see, yeah,
- 8:45Speaker 3: it gives you a bit of a break in between. Yeah,
- 8:47Speaker 3: but absolutely, holidays, sickness, we cover for each other to
- 8:51Speaker 3: be fair, We're there most Sundays anywhere. Yeah right, yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 3: I think all five of us are going to be
- 8:55Speaker 3: there this Sunday. And Trevor's the rd this week?
- 8:58Speaker 4: Is he?
- 8:58Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 8:58Speaker 1: Right? And does that work for you as well? Tom?
- 9:01Speaker 4: Yes, This idea is we've we've got a year sort
- 9:03Speaker 4: of planned in advance, right, put a spreadsheet together. It's
- 9:07Speaker 4: all color coded, so we know who's who's there and
- 9:09Speaker 4: who's not, and we can log when we're due to
- 9:12Speaker 4: be away so we can work around it and help
- 9:13Speaker 4: cover each other if needs be.
- 9:15Speaker 1: Right now, when we've spoke before and when I spoke
- 9:20Speaker 1: on Sunday, you've got a list here in front of
- 9:22Speaker 1: me of what the day to day running is. So
- 9:28Speaker 1: I mean on the lead up, first of all volunteers.
- 9:30Speaker 1: You know, we all know we couldn't do the job
- 9:32Speaker 1: without volunteers. Have you got if you like a good
- 9:36Speaker 1: wedge of volunteers? Have you you know? Or you do
- 9:39Speaker 1: you like most park runs?
- 9:41Speaker 2: I see?
- 9:42Speaker 1: What I do find really tough sometimes is that, as
- 9:44Speaker 1: you say, the senior park runs, they've got four hundred
- 9:48Speaker 1: and and every week there's a little post says could
- 9:51Speaker 1: if anybody spare, could you come along and help us volunteer?
- 9:54Speaker 2: You know?
- 9:55Speaker 1: But how do you cope with that? Is that? Is that?
- 9:57Speaker 3: Does it flow nicely for you? A lot of the volunteers,
- 10:00Speaker 3: honestly does. We've got a core set of volunteers that
- 10:03Speaker 3: are there week after week. I think we've had over
- 10:05Speaker 3: one hundred and thirty different volunteers over the last year,
- 10:09Speaker 3: but we still see the same people week in, week out.
- 10:11Speaker 3: They are truly amazing and it's great to have them
- 10:15Speaker 3: and it was great to recognize one of them on
- 10:17Speaker 3: the You know, Chris Walgar is there. Yes, Yeah, he's
- 10:20Speaker 3: the volunteer of the year, especially with some of these
- 10:22Speaker 3: creations to help us sort of token collection. But they are.
- 10:26Speaker 3: It's a nice little community with the volunteers, with the
- 10:31Speaker 3: parents and with obviously with the runners as well that
- 10:34Speaker 3: the children. It's brilliant right.
- 10:36Speaker 1: So later on in this little chat, I will we
- 10:40Speaker 1: will be recapping what happened on Sunday, and I do
- 10:42Speaker 1: want you to name names about there. There were some
- 10:45Speaker 1: awards that went out and I think it's only fair
- 10:47Speaker 1: that they should get another mention. Now we're having a
- 10:50Speaker 1: chat here on radio, folks. So I mean, I've got
- 10:54Speaker 1: down here looking at these little list of things. Now,
- 10:56Speaker 1: a defibrillator is that word is now becoming more and
- 11:00Speaker 1: more known by people. Is that something that you must
- 11:05Speaker 1: have one or is recommended?
- 11:07Speaker 3: Absolutely no, So I must have. That's one of the
- 11:09Speaker 3: few bits of equipment that we must have. Without it,
- 11:12Speaker 3: we can't run the event. Park Run recently changed some
- 11:16Speaker 3: of their rules around that. We used to leave the
- 11:19Speaker 3: DFIB with the equipment. Folks Regnan Park Bowls Club kindly
- 11:24Speaker 3: allowed us to put a stories unit with our equipment
- 11:27Speaker 3: on their grounds, really really kind of them. And we
- 11:30Speaker 3: used to leave it there, but it changed recently so
- 11:32Speaker 3: now we keep it with us. So I'll hand it
- 11:35Speaker 3: over to Trevor this Sunday and then he'll keep it
- 11:37Speaker 3: for a couple of weeks and hand it over to
- 11:38Speaker 3: the next must have a piece of equipment.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Yeah right, and I mean that's that's a good point actually,
- 11:45Speaker 1: Ruy coming back to you, Tom, the equipment, so you
- 11:48Speaker 1: when you turn up on Sunday, you don't bring your
- 11:51Speaker 1: own sets of cones and things. It's all stored at
- 11:55Speaker 1: the Park Bowls Club.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, and that's exactly where it is. It's at
- 11:58Speaker 4: the Bowls Club and really handy location. It's sort of
- 12:03Speaker 4: yards from such.
- 12:04Speaker 1: A yeah, and a big shout out to the Bulls Club.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Actually a big thanks for allowing that. I didn't know that,
- 12:09Speaker 1: So that is something that I do think you deserve
- 12:11Speaker 1: a pat on the back. I mean the at the
- 12:14Speaker 1: at the main one on the leaves, they have to
- 12:16Speaker 1: get buried underneath the band staying every week. Yeah, who's
- 12:19Speaker 1: got the key or have you got to know I
- 12:20Speaker 1: got the key. Yeah, So okay, right, we're gonna take
- 12:23Speaker 1: a little a little break. Now play a bit of music. Now,
- 12:26Speaker 1: this one I did play. I was there and by
- 12:28Speaker 1: the way, if you were there on Sunday, I was
- 12:30Speaker 1: there with a bit of PA equipment, just having a
- 12:32Speaker 1: little chat, having a little laugh, and there was a
- 12:35Speaker 1: serious side to it, but there was a happy side
- 12:37Speaker 1: to it. And as it was the first birthday of
- 12:40Speaker 1: the park run, what better song to play than this one?
- 12:44Speaker 1: Stevie Wonder and Happy Birthday.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Just down muddy.
- 13:14Speaker 1: Okay, So that's happy birthday there. And this is what
- 13:17Speaker 1: we are talking about today. We're in the studios of
- 13:22Speaker 1: Radio Folks and I'm joined by Roy Atkins and Tom Wells,
- 13:26Speaker 1: and we are chatting about the Radnor Park Junior Park
- 13:29Speaker 1: Runs first birthday. Now, it all happened last Sunday. We
- 13:33Speaker 1: were blessed with a nice day and a good turnout
- 13:36Speaker 1: as well. So Roy, tell us how how you thought
- 13:38Speaker 1: the day went on Sunday. Was that a normal, typical
- 13:40Speaker 1: day or was it just like a little bit special
- 13:42Speaker 1: because it.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Was made more special by the amount of young runners
- 13:46Speaker 3: that were there, the kids being there, overwhelmed by volunteers,
- 13:49Speaker 3: which was absolute, truly amazing, And yeah, just the atmosphere
- 13:53Speaker 3: of the vibe and it was just great to see
- 13:55Speaker 3: so many people in Ragna Park on a Sunday morning.
- 13:58Speaker 3: That was absolutely amazing.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Right, Tom, we were talking off just now about volunteers,
- 14:02Speaker 1: but there's kind of another side, an interesting side for
- 14:05Speaker 1: youngsters that volunteer, so tell us about that there is.
- 14:09Speaker 4: So we have a couple of volunteers who come and
- 14:12Speaker 4: join us every week who are currently doing their Duke
- 14:14Speaker 4: Venburgh Awards, So they come along and we've recently sort
- 14:18Speaker 4: of set out a program for them so that we
- 14:20Speaker 4: can get them to experience every volunteering role that we
- 14:24Speaker 4: have at Junior Part Run, so that hopefully by the
- 14:26Speaker 4: end of it they can shadow one of us as
- 14:28Speaker 4: a run director for the day. So it's a sort
- 14:32Speaker 4: of twenty six weeks that they have to volunteer for.
- 14:35Speaker 4: And yeah, it's nice to get some youngsters involved.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Have you had many come through?
- 14:40Speaker 4: We've had four today of course of the year, we've
- 14:43Speaker 4: had four sort of young people volunteer with.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Us in that role.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Right and now Sunday, besides being a milestone for the
- 14:53Speaker 1: part run, was time for a little bit of pat
- 14:55Speaker 1: on the back and thank you to and you gave
- 14:57Speaker 1: some awards out, so who's going to tell us about that.
- 15:02Speaker 1: I can do that, yeah, oh yeah, because you had
- 15:04Speaker 1: to sort them all out.
- 15:06Speaker 4: So yeah, the first one we did, and Roy's already
- 15:09Speaker 4: mentioned it was our sort of volunteer of the year,
- 15:12Speaker 4: which went to Chris Walga. He's been amazing. He turns
- 15:15Speaker 4: up rain or shine. He's done a few little innovations
- 15:19Speaker 4: for us. He's done a token sort so the juniors
- 15:21Speaker 4: can hook up their tokens, makes them a lot easier
- 15:23Speaker 4: for us to sort out. He's made some little signs
- 15:25Speaker 4: for us to try and keep the adults out of
- 15:27Speaker 4: the finished final because they do like to run through occasionally.
- 15:31Speaker 4: We also had our most improved junior, so me and
- 15:34Speaker 4: Roy did spend a little bit of time sifting through
- 15:37Speaker 4: the data last week to try and establish who was that,
- 15:40Speaker 4: and it was a young lad called Isaac. He'd gone
- 15:43Speaker 4: through them I think was seventeen twenty on his first
- 15:46Speaker 4: part run and he's gradually improved throughout the year, and
- 15:48Speaker 4: that's what we wanted, someone who's sort of improved week
- 15:50Speaker 4: on week, and before last weekend he was down to
- 15:54Speaker 4: twelve ten and then he got another PB on Sunday
- 15:56Speaker 4: which was eleven fifty. I think, so he's still improving.
- 16:01Speaker 4: Our junior part runner of the year was a lad
- 16:03Speaker 4: called Casey. He'd done forty at the forty six events
- 16:08Speaker 4: up until last Sunday. He was our most attended sort
- 16:11Speaker 4: of junior, but we had others. There was some thirty
- 16:13Speaker 4: seven from some thirty sixes, so we've had some juniors.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Who have been really committed over the year.
- 16:20Speaker 4: And our final award is we had a sort of
- 16:22Speaker 4: run director special award that we chose between the five
- 16:25Speaker 4: of us and we couldn't have ord this to one individual.
- 16:29Speaker 4: In the end, we auded to a family. It was
- 16:31Speaker 4: the Heart family. They come along nearly every week. Dad
- 16:36Speaker 4: holds up a power up sign. Mum runs around with
- 16:40Speaker 4: some of the other juniors as well to encourage them along.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Both children run most weeks, get involved and they're always
- 16:47Speaker 4: there towards the end on the finish line and the
- 16:50Speaker 4: finished final cheering, clapping people across the line, and they
- 16:53Speaker 4: really embody everything we.
- 16:54Speaker 2: Want to sort of yeah part run.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that is great, It's it's nice. I bet
- 16:59Speaker 1: there was a up to them, wasn't it It was?
- 17:01Speaker 4: I think, Yeah. You can see on Lauren's face when
- 17:05Speaker 4: when Joe mentioned it.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So oh great. Now I've seen Lauren as a as
- 17:09Speaker 1: a if you like, with my mc head on at
- 17:12Speaker 1: various races, and she's just got improved and improved improved herself,
- 17:17Speaker 1: you know, and obviously it's rubbing off and all the family,
- 17:19Speaker 1: which is great. Yeah, and now I must ask you,
- 17:22Speaker 1: there was a lovely cake there, so I think we
- 17:26Speaker 1: need to say a thank you to whoever made it
- 17:28Speaker 1: or acquired it or whether it's a part run standard
- 17:31Speaker 1: issue cake.
- 17:33Speaker 3: No, it was a homemade cakee by our very own
- 17:35Speaker 3: rd Kirsty Bristow, was it? And yeah, yeah, I think
- 17:39Speaker 3: she probably could have made five of them and they
- 17:40Speaker 3: still wouldn't have been enough.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it's a shame to cut them up, really,
- 17:44Speaker 1: some of these cakes. I saw it there, took a
- 17:46Speaker 1: picture of it and posted it on my social media
- 17:49Speaker 1: and got lots of likes, and I kept I kept
- 17:52Speaker 1: going over and having a little look and it soon went.
- 17:54Speaker 1: But luckily she had some chocolate brownies and things to
- 17:56Speaker 1: give out. The que was getting longer and longer, and
- 17:59Speaker 1: you could so at the back sort of, you know,
- 18:01Speaker 1: standing up on their toes. Any left an he left,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and no it was a great touch, really good touch.
- 18:06Speaker 1: So first of all, I don't think we've mentioned the
- 18:08Speaker 1: other run directors, so so Ray, you just tell us
- 18:15Speaker 1: the names, you know, not in any pecking order, but
- 18:18Speaker 1: of all the other run directors, because they certainly need
- 18:21Speaker 1: to shout out.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Yeah, no, absolutely so he mentioned Kersey Briscoe, Bristol just
- 18:24Speaker 3: a second ago for a cake skills and our run
- 18:27Speaker 3: director skills. We've also got Joe Sherrington and Trevor de
- 18:30Speaker 3: Vault as well as the team of five right brilliant.
- 18:32Speaker 1: So I do know most of them by sight. I
- 18:35Speaker 1: certainly know Trevor because he I've seen him at several
- 18:39Speaker 1: events and he's been on the radio show himself. When
- 18:43Speaker 1: for the Senior Park run, I think, oh, we were
- 18:45Speaker 1: coming up for the tenth anniversary, I think it was,
- 18:47Speaker 1: and we did a little thing on the band stand
- 18:49Speaker 1: down there. So it's amazing actually that the Senior Park
- 18:53Speaker 1: runs been go ten years now. Yeah, and that was
- 18:56Speaker 1: a good day. It was. The weather wasn't very nice,
- 18:58Speaker 1: but we managed to drag out a few celebrities on
- 19:00Speaker 1: the day, so right, I think we've nearly covered everything,
- 19:04Speaker 1: so I'm just going to look down my list here
- 19:07Speaker 1: because we don't want to forget anything, and I don't
- 19:09Speaker 1: want you to go out the door and say, oh
- 19:11Speaker 1: I wish I should have mentioned so and so so
- 19:15Speaker 1: real is there anything else you want to add to
- 19:17Speaker 1: this morning?
- 19:19Speaker 3: Just a big shout out again to the volunteers because
- 19:21Speaker 3: they are amazing, and just for anybody listening, we're always
- 19:24Speaker 3: after volunteers. So if you're around on a Sunday morning
- 19:27Speaker 3: and you want to support us, please that we've got
- 19:30Speaker 3: We've got the website, the Regnar Poet Junior part rom
- 19:33Speaker 3: email address, or just come and find one of us
- 19:37Speaker 3: on a Sunday. You know most of us are there,
- 19:39Speaker 3: and we've got a wassapp group that we've got Now
- 19:41Speaker 3: for the volunteers, just to gee up some people. But yeah, yeah,
- 19:47Speaker 3: big thank you to everybody's volunteered, and if you want
- 19:49Speaker 3: to volunteer, please come along right excellent.
- 19:51Speaker 1: So now, Tom, if someone listening into this, or someone
- 19:55Speaker 1: turned up at the park round last Sunday and they said, oh,
- 19:59Speaker 1: this is great, this is great, but they don't quite
- 20:01Speaker 1: understand he is a free event. But you've only just
- 20:04Speaker 1: got to what what have you got to do? Does
- 20:07Speaker 1: that tell us about barcodes and that sort of thing?
- 20:09Speaker 2: So, yeah, what the process is.
- 20:12Speaker 4: You register via the park Run main website, which is
- 20:15Speaker 4: part Run dot code dot com, and you you register there,
- 20:20Speaker 4: you give them your basic details and that generates a
- 20:23Speaker 4: barcode which you can print off.
- 20:25Speaker 2: You can have it on your phone. They do all
- 20:27Speaker 2: sorts of.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Other tattooed on your left arm or Yeah.
- 20:33Speaker 4: So once you've got that barcode, you can say it's
- 20:36Speaker 4: a free event, so you can turn up run. At
- 20:38Speaker 4: the end of the event, we hand out a small barcode,
- 20:40Speaker 4: which is the finishing position. We have volunteers they're scanning
- 20:44Speaker 4: and both barcodes get scanned and they get sent up
- 20:47Speaker 4: into the into the cloud and the gods up there
- 20:51Speaker 4: sort out the results for us and it appears on
- 20:54Speaker 4: the website later in the day.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Right, And it's worth noticing that that that barcode isn't
- 20:59Speaker 1: just for the folks and junior park Run, is it.
- 21:02Speaker 4: No, that can be used anywhere. That's your individual barcode
- 21:06Speaker 4: for any event that you do with part Run.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and I've just got a word for the parents.
- 21:12Speaker 1: There are junior park runs around this area. In Kent,
- 21:15Speaker 1: there's one at Bettsanger on the country Park. There, there's
- 21:18Speaker 1: one at Ashford Victoria Park, there's one at a park
- 21:21Speaker 1: in Faversham, and there's one at Herne Bay. So if
- 21:24Speaker 1: you're just fancy a little change, perhaps then you might
- 21:27Speaker 1: want to go and support another park run and your
- 21:30Speaker 1: barcode is valid for that anywhere in the country. In fact,
- 21:33Speaker 1: I've had some seriously interesting venues and sent to me
- 21:38Speaker 1: over the years of where people have run park run
- 21:42Speaker 1: and some countries really have taken to park run. Unfortunately
- 21:46Speaker 1: in France it doesn't seem to work. And for my
- 21:48Speaker 1: experience in running in France, when I used to run
- 21:50Speaker 1: in France, you always need a doctor's certificate and that
- 21:54Speaker 1: was a big oh dear, you know. I used to
- 21:56Speaker 1: take a crowd of people when I was with Folks
- 21:58Speaker 1: and Running Club to La Tuque every year and they
- 22:01Speaker 1: started really clamping down on the doctor's certificate and for
- 22:05Speaker 1: a lot of people it was a lot of trouble
- 22:07Speaker 1: and I think that's one of the reasons why there
- 22:08Speaker 1: isn't a park run in France, but they are. I've
- 22:12Speaker 1: had feedback from from Australia, New Zealand. Oh yeah, there's's
- 22:18Speaker 1: quite big in Belgium. A lot of park senior park
- 22:21Speaker 1: runners go to Belgium because it's got the park run.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Can never remember it begins with a Z if you're
- 22:26Speaker 1: doing the eight of Z park runs, Zuda Kirker or something.
- 22:30Speaker 1: But park run has become massive and ruyd. You see
- 22:36Speaker 1: the benefits that you know when the kids are out running,
- 22:38Speaker 1: you know it's getting away from the computers.
- 22:40Speaker 3: And absolutely yeah, I mean seeing having so many juniors
- 22:45Speaker 3: there on a Sunday morning. My favorite position is the
- 22:49Speaker 3: finisher lane. As they're coming running down on that last
- 22:52Speaker 3: last one hundred meters, you know, we do the warm
- 22:54Speaker 3: ups with them because again that's one thing we didn't mention.
- 22:56Speaker 3: It's different between the Saturday park and the Sunday part run.
- 22:59Speaker 3: One of the mandatory things we have to do as
- 23:01Speaker 3: a warm up, and I've got a silly warm up
- 23:04Speaker 3: where I do different animals like cheetas and giraffes and orangutangs.
- 23:08Speaker 3: And as they're running down the finish lane, I love
- 23:10Speaker 3: saying to run like Tita. I remember my warm up
- 23:11Speaker 3: run like a cheeta and it is it is a
- 23:15Speaker 3: Sunday morning, it's nine o'clock on a Sunday morning. They're
- 23:17Speaker 3: not in front of the TV either, not on their
- 23:18Speaker 3: iPads or phones. They're running around Ragna Park.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Yeah, brilliant. Okay, Tom, anything else from you recovered it?
- 23:25Speaker 1: Any thank you for family and friends, anything the dog,
- 23:28Speaker 1: Budge hear anything?
- 23:30Speaker 4: Yeah, No, I'm just just expanded on what Roy said
- 23:32Speaker 4: there is that you know, not only have we got
- 23:33Speaker 4: the juniors there running, but we've had a few that
- 23:36Speaker 4: have turned fifteen over the course of the year, and
- 23:40Speaker 4: a number of those still come and volunteer with us
- 23:42Speaker 4: now on a Sunday mornings. They still get up on
- 23:44Speaker 4: a Sunday. They've become part of our volunteer team. They're
- 23:47Speaker 4: part of the community there and they're still getting up
- 23:50Speaker 4: Sunday morning, rain or shining, they're coming to volunteering with.
- 23:53Speaker 2: Us, which is great. Great.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Well, I just want to thank you both for coming in.
- 23:56Speaker 1: It's been a really enlightening morning. And I hope if
- 23:58Speaker 1: there's any parents out there that perhaps haven't I haven't
- 24:01Speaker 1: heard a part run. It might be off their radars.
- 24:03Speaker 1: They were driving by past Radna Park on Sunday morning.
- 24:07Speaker 1: Perhaps if you if you listen to this or to
- 24:10Speaker 1: the podcast when it goes out that you might you
- 24:12Speaker 1: want to think about getting your child involved. So a
- 24:15Speaker 1: big thank you to you Roy, thank you very much
- 24:17Speaker 1: for coming in. And big thanks to you Tom. Thanks. Okay, right,
- 24:20Speaker 1: a bitter song. Now we're going to go play. We've
- 24:22Speaker 1: got a bit of a one direction here we go.
- 24:27Speaker 3: I've got five far heart, I'm not scared of the dark.
- 24:31Speaker 2: You've never seen it, look so lease, I gotta.
- 24:39Speaker 1: There was a nasty Girl by a notorious big two
- 24:42Speaker 1: thousand and five. All a great morning that was with
- 24:46Speaker 1: the two run directors from the Junior Park Run and
- 24:49Speaker 1: it's just you know the enthusiasm of these guys and
- 24:52Speaker 1: just to make sure that the event goes on properly.
- 24:54Speaker 1: And they've been doing it for a whole year. Now, okay,
- 24:57Speaker 1: so we're going to really have a job to squeeze
- 24:59Speaker 1: a lot of sporting, but I'm going to rock on
- 25:01Speaker 1: and see what happens. So we start with the cricket news. Well,
- 25:05Speaker 1: it was a bright sunny Saturday and I'm pleased to
- 25:07Speaker 1: say although our local games were completed, folks from First
- 25:11Speaker 1: eleven won the toss at home to Bromley Common and
- 25:14Speaker 1: made a stagger in three hundred and one for eight
- 25:16Speaker 1: in their fifty overs. Top scorer was Ritra Dande who
- 25:20Speaker 1: made one hundred and thirty six and Shahie Maleek with
- 25:22Speaker 1: fifty one. Bromley Common put up a good fire and
- 25:25Speaker 1: made two hundred and fifty all out, but it wasn't
- 25:28Speaker 1: enough and Folks then won the game by fifty one runs.
- 25:31Speaker 1: This Saturday, Folks are away to Bickley, which means a
- 25:33Speaker 1: trip to Bromley in North Kent. Hawkins traveled to Why
- 25:38Speaker 1: won of the toss, decided to bat and made two
- 25:40Speaker 1: hundred and fifty nine for eight in forty overs. Top
- 25:43Speaker 1: scorer once again was a former guest of the show,
- 25:45Speaker 1: Terry Dunham, who made one hundred and twenty six. Why
- 25:49Speaker 1: then made one hundred and ninety four all out, so
- 25:51Speaker 1: Hawkins won the game by sixty five runs, keeping them
- 25:54Speaker 1: top of Division eight Shepherd Section. This week they Hawkins
- 25:58Speaker 1: are at home to Ash Cricket Club, who are seventh.
- 26:02Speaker 1: Hyde fielded first against Saint Lawrence and Highland Court, who
- 26:04Speaker 1: made one hundred and ninety seven all out. I've managed
- 26:07Speaker 1: one hundred and seventy three for seven, but it wasn't
- 26:10Speaker 1: enough so lost the game by twenty four runs, but
- 26:13Speaker 1: it still keeps them in second place, just behind Hawkins.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Now I couldn't find a fixture for Hive this Saturday,
- 26:19Speaker 1: but this may be because there's an odd number of
- 26:21Speaker 1: teams in this division. Their next game is on the
- 26:24Speaker 1: twenty sixth to July away to Willsborough. Iive Green traveled
- 26:28Speaker 1: away to Kennington, won the toss, chose to bat, and
- 26:31Speaker 1: made one hundred and ninety six for five in their
- 26:33Speaker 1: forty overs. Top scorer was Cameron Emmanuel Burns with seventy four. However,
- 26:39Speaker 1: in what must have been a tense finish, Kennington made sorry.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Iive Green made one hundred and ninety six. Kennington made
- 26:45Speaker 1: one hundred and ninety seven runs necessary with only a
- 26:48Speaker 1: couple of balls to spare in their very last over,
- 26:51Speaker 1: winning the game by five wickets. This week, the Green
- 26:55Speaker 1: are at home to Whitstaball. So what made the journey
- 26:58Speaker 1: to the top of the table and who batted first
- 27:01Speaker 1: and made two hundred and twenty two all out. Silt
- 27:04Speaker 1: would with every batter chipping in, made one hundred and
- 27:06Speaker 1: sixty six all out. However, it wasn't enough and they
- 27:09Speaker 1: lost the game by fifty six runs. This Saturday is
- 27:13Speaker 1: their terms a visit Kennington. Sipton Park were away to Borstal,
- 27:16Speaker 1: which meant the trip to Rochester. The SIPs had won
- 27:19Speaker 1: the toss and decided to bat and made two hundred
- 27:21Speaker 1: and fifty six for eight. My escorer was Oscar Roberts
- 27:24Speaker 1: who made eighty seven not out. They then skittled out
- 27:27Speaker 1: Borstal for just eighty two runs in all. Jack Wood
- 27:30Speaker 1: would take in five wickets for thirty four runs, Harry
- 27:33Speaker 1: Rowe taking two for twenty one and his dad Steve
- 27:36Speaker 1: took one for fourteen, with Miles Clayton also taking a wicket.
- 27:41Speaker 1: So the Sibs won the game by one hundred and
- 27:43Speaker 1: seventy four runs. Mind you. To be fair, Tom Curry
- 27:46Speaker 1: took three wickets for Borstal and Mohammad Azar took four.
- 27:50Speaker 1: This Saturday, the Sibs are at home to Upchurch and
- 27:53Speaker 1: the SIPs are currently fourth in Division five. Hurrican Section
- 27:57Speaker 1: and Upchurch are second. So it's going to be a
- 27:59Speaker 1: close game and at the moment, I think the weather
- 28:02Speaker 1: forecast looks okay, but it's been a bit changeable just lately,
- 28:06Speaker 1: so we're hoping that we can get another full set
- 28:08Speaker 1: of games in right. I'm going to move on to
- 28:11Speaker 1: the Friday mixed hockey results. On Friday night the Mixed
- 28:15Speaker 1: league we had Canterbury Reds one, Herne Bay three, Ops,
- 28:20Speaker 1: Blues was six and a Deal was three. Ashford Sharks
- 28:25Speaker 1: Neil Hulkan four Ops White Team Neil Kent Place.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Four.
- 28:30Speaker 1: Fixtures for this Friday are Ashford Tigers versus Cliftonville, Herne
- 28:34Speaker 1: Bay versus Maidstone, Maystone, Iguana, Dons Deal versus Canterbury Red
- 28:41Speaker 1: and the Ops under twenty ones are playing South Saxon's. Okay,
- 28:46Speaker 1: so we're going to play Robbie Williams. We might cut
- 28:47Speaker 1: this a bit short of just see how at sport
- 28:49Speaker 1: I've got left to to get in. So let's sitt
- 28:52Speaker 1: back and listen to a bit of Angels.
- 29:00Speaker 4: A certain way design Angel.
- 29:07Speaker 2: I'm no angels, a.
- 29:09Speaker 1: Bit of Robbie There Angels nineteen ninety seven. Okay, swiftly
- 29:15Speaker 1: moving on, moving on from our junior part run guests.
- 29:19Speaker 1: Now the folks that I went up to the Folkston
- 29:21Speaker 1: Senior Park Run on the Leaves on Saturday, which attracted
- 29:24Speaker 1: three hundred and seventy seven runners. The winner was a
- 29:27Speaker 1: tourist Joseph Farrelly from Manchester Harriers in seventeen minutes twenty
- 29:31Speaker 1: four seconds. Now. During the run, Joseph was neck and
- 29:34Speaker 1: neck most of the way round with sang Rag Array,
- 29:37Speaker 1: but Joseph pulled away and won with a twenty second margin. However,
- 29:41Speaker 1: sang Ram did achieve a PB. The third place runner
- 29:44Speaker 1: was Alex Verrees from a club I hadn't heard of before,
- 29:48Speaker 1: West four Harriers, but when I looked them up, I
- 29:50Speaker 1: found that they came from Chiswick in West London and
- 29:53Speaker 1: West four is part of their postcode which is W
- 29:56Speaker 1: four to SP so that was anyway. Scrolling down the results,
- 30:02Speaker 1: I found that whenner Joseph Farreley must have been down
- 30:05Speaker 1: this way, possibly on holiday with his family, because I
- 30:08Speaker 1: noticed a Tom, a Lindsay and a Philip Farreley, also
- 30:11Speaker 1: from Manchester, so a big folks in part run Welcome
- 30:14Speaker 1: goes out to the Farreley family. And whilst on the
- 30:16Speaker 1: subject of park run tourists, it's time to see where
- 30:19Speaker 1: our folks and park runners headed off for their Saturday
- 30:22Speaker 1: morning nine am park run fix. I've been doing this
- 30:26Speaker 1: feature recently of where our local runners go to find
- 30:30Speaker 1: a park run, and last Saturday Will there was the
- 30:34Speaker 1: usual suspects were visited. That's Ashford Maidstone Warmer Deal which
- 30:39Speaker 1: is one park run Warmer Deal. Heading further afield, there
- 30:43Speaker 1: was Beachbury which is sort of out towards Tembridge wells Way.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Now there was one called Ifield a Mill Pond which
- 30:49Speaker 1: is in Crawley, which is a seventy five mild trip.
- 30:53Speaker 1: There's two Rushmore Park Run in Aldershot and Jersey Farm
- 30:58Speaker 1: Park Run near Snall are both about one hundred miles away.
- 31:02Speaker 1: One of our local runners went to Sandringham in the
- 31:05Speaker 1: Royal Parks in Norfolk which is one hundred and sixty
- 31:07Speaker 1: seven miles away, and the furthest away was it's a
- 31:12Speaker 1: park run called Nova Prestatin which is in North Wales
- 31:16Speaker 1: which is three hundred and thirty miles away. So well
- 31:19Speaker 1: done to all our local park runners for being tourists
- 31:22Speaker 1: and visiting other venues. Now, last Sunday was one of
- 31:27Speaker 1: the flattest ten k's on the calendar down at New Romney.
- 31:30Speaker 1: The race was organized by a Rotary Club of Romney
- 31:32Speaker 1: Marsh with chip timing compiled by a race event company
- 31:36Speaker 1: and Nice Work, and the elevation of the course was
- 31:39Speaker 1: just eight meters It's only twenty six feet so not
- 31:43Speaker 1: like Eastbourne and rabigy Head, so it was a perfect
- 31:45Speaker 1: chance for a PB. First running home on the day
- 31:48Speaker 1: was Dan Bradley from Tunbridge AC in a time of
- 31:51Speaker 1: thirty three minutes four seconds. Twenty two folks and runners
- 31:55Speaker 1: running took part and the first home for the club
- 31:58Speaker 1: was Nick Steel at thirty six minutes twenty seconds. Notable
- 32:02Speaker 1: performances came from Paul Barlett, who ran at eight second
- 32:04Speaker 1: PB and came third in his age category. Crystal Clitzier
- 32:08Speaker 1: was first in the Vet sixty category and teammate Torbyn
- 32:12Speaker 1: Jessen was second in the same category. Debbie Partmenter was
- 32:16Speaker 1: first in the Vet female sixty category and special mentions
- 32:19Speaker 1: must go to the Slingsby brothers. The older brother Guy
- 32:23Speaker 1: was first junior male home in the ten k and
- 32:26Speaker 1: his younger brother Hugo finished second in the junior race,
- 32:29Speaker 1: so two stars to look out for the future. South
- 32:33Speaker 1: Kent Harry as fifteen runners. First male home for the
- 32:36Speaker 1: club was Ian Major in forty three minutes fifteen seconds
- 32:40Speaker 1: and first female was Jenny spi Lane in fifty two
- 32:43Speaker 1: minutes exactly, so a good turnout there from our local runners.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Down at New Romney, not far to go for them.
- 32:50Speaker 1: So what a good day they all had, right, So
- 32:54Speaker 1: what we got now? I think we're going to play
- 32:55Speaker 1: a little bit of lightning seeds. We might be able
- 32:57Speaker 1: to just might have cut this short just a little bit,
- 33:00Speaker 1: but so further ado, this is the life of rileygh Okay,
- 33:22Speaker 1: we're going to fade that down a little bit because
- 33:24Speaker 1: there's just two little things I want to tell you about.
- 33:26Speaker 1: On Saturday afternoon, to celebrate my neighbor and friend Pete
- 33:30Speaker 1: Welsh's birthday, we had a game of bulls Now have
- 33:34Speaker 1: you been over Radon Park and seeing that big sort
- 33:36Speaker 1: of gravelly section they got over there, that is a
- 33:40Speaker 1: bull court. Anyway, we had a game of bull there.
