- 0:00Should be live now. You should really put your Duckfellas logo on there while we're starting.
- 0:08On where? On the screen? It is on there. No, I mean like the whole thing.
- 0:14Like how you do your outro?
- 0:15I don't have a picture for it though.
- 0:19Mm-hmm. Trying to see if it's actually... There we are.
- 0:26Let's get into it. I think we're the only people in here right now.
- 0:31Well, there was just me on there. Now it's just Kate.
- 0:36Can you hear it decent? Mine's for Rose. Oh, now it's back.
- 0:41Loud? It's good. Good enough. I added my volume crank, though, in it.
- 0:48Went straight in my ear hole. I'm sure we can see comments.
- 0:53Yeah, just one of you guys leaked the comments up. Can you see if I don't know?
- 0:57There's my bar in the way. And I think some comments will pop up,
- 1:01too. They all should. Yeah.
- 1:05Let's kick this thing off.
- 1:14Welcome to the Duckfellas Podcast. Your weekly dose of waterfowl wisdom,
- 1:20blind banter, and hunting stories that might just be mostly true. Hosted by Tyler Cade.
- 1:48That was one of the hardest things I did. That really royally botched me up doing that. Oh, man.
- 1:57Well, here we are. The delay is real, huh? Yeah, it's terrible.
- 2:01Yeah. I was trying to listen to the music as we're doing that,
- 2:04but the delay and me talking and the music, I was lost.
- 2:10We could tell. Yeah. It happens. We'll figure that out later on.
- 2:15What did Chad say? Get to work. Nah, fuck that. We ain't doing this.
- 2:23Well, I guess we can jump into how the hunting was this past week,
- 2:27which was awful. Hot garbage. Absolute dog shit. Yeah.
- 2:32But we ended it tonight on a decent note.
- 2:36Decent. It wasn't a burner, but it was a decent hunt. Which reminds me,
- 2:40we still have birds to clean. No.
- 2:43I don't want to do that. Not good. This was supposed to start an hour ago And
- 2:47here we are At least we're only an hour late Yeah, no, that's not bad Make a progress,
- 2:53The way it initially started with this mixer I thought,
- 2:56I didn't know if we were even going to make it to this point tonight But here
- 3:00we are We started off strong with no cords to hook the mics up So that was a strong start Yeah,
- 3:07yeah But thanks to the Cornfield Confidential For
- 3:10donating a cord for the night For the night We got
- 3:13lucky we got lucky they had a podcaster down yeah
- 3:16that worked out well what's
- 3:20the topic this week a waterfall gear and apparel yep yeah
- 3:23well let's uh i mean jump into
- 3:26that we'll just go straight into gear i think that'll be our strong point to
- 3:30start with everybody's got their own opinions on what kind of gear they like
- 3:33and it's very biased i mean everybody has one that they really like and then
- 3:40there's also the people that are ready to fight somebody over wearing the wrong I'm Gere,
- 3:44a.k.a. Cade. Hey, listen here, bud.
- 3:48I'm not fighting anybody over what they wear. I don't give a shit.
- 3:51Always getting mad, making fun of me. I just got to give you shit for your sick of butt plug.
- 3:56It's nice. It's fuzzy.
- 4:01Nice and warm. So what's your go-to apparel for your everyday gear you're going to wear?
- 4:08Which guy, Pookie? You. Oh, me? Yeah, let's start with you. Me.
- 4:11Don't be putting Pookie on the spotlight right now. He's nervous as shit right
- 4:15now. He's probably shitting his pants next to me. I'm so fucking scared right now.
- 4:18Honestly, as long as it's warm and when it's raining, I don't get wet like I did the other day.
- 4:23I don't give a shit what it is. I like a decent sweatshirt and a warm vest and I'm usually good to go.
- 4:30You got pretty wet the other day. Dude, I got soaked. It didn't help that my
- 4:33nice little drake coat that I got thrown up on the sunflower,
- 4:36and the top of it got melted, so it was no longer waterproof.
- 4:40It just went straight down my back onto my sweatshirt. It was not good.
- 4:44Yeah, that was one of the worst things, is being wet, sitting there, no heater.
- 4:50Yeah, no heater. Because the propane ran out. I feel like that's a common theme
- 4:53with you. No heaters. You know what? I had a busy night that night.
- 4:58Okay? Allegedly. Hey, no phones. It's family time. It's nothing. Fuck you.
- 5:02Put it down. We're trying to accomplish something here. What are we going to
- 5:06accomplish? What about you?
- 5:07Me? Let's hear it. The everyday go-to for Tyler.
- 5:11I used to like the Under Armour gear back when they first started coming out
- 5:14with their waterfowl gear and their waterfowl line.
- 5:17I loved their line of gear they had. It was really warm, really waterproof.
- 5:22It held up good. I had a, you know those pullover jackets that had a hood on
- 5:26them and like a quarter zip? I wore that thing for years and it only reason
- 5:32I got rid of it was because I got too fat for it. Checks out.
- 5:38Was that like 45 years ago or 30? Close enough.
- 5:43But now, I mean, I really didn't, I was not wanting to get said kid gear for the longest time.
- 5:49I talked shit on it for a long time, just as Cade does now because he doesn't own any.
- 5:52I don't so much talk shit on it. I just don't want to spend the money on it.
- 5:55Like you're saying right now.
- 5:57Yeah. Well, I didn't want to do that either. And I, I broke down and I think
- 6:01the first thing I bought was like the Dakota hoodie.
- 6:03And since then I've acquired a shitload more, but I will say the other day in
- 6:08that rain, I was completely dry wearing my Hudson jacket. Yeah, I was not.
- 6:12I was worried that I was wet on my sleeves and I took the coat off to take a
- 6:15piss and I'm like, you know, we're good. We're dry. Gucci.
- 6:20Still no heat, though. No heat. No heat. I was not cold, though.
- 6:25Yeah, I was fine. I bet not. You were dry. I was fine, too, because I was also
- 6:28dry. The two guys that were prepared for the rain that day were dry.
- 6:31Well, you see, I thought I was prepared, and then I saw that jacket when I went
- 6:35to leave home, and I was like, shit, this is not good.
- 6:40It's still better than just a sweatshirt, though. Oh, yeah, absolutely. Yeah, poor Zach.
- 6:44Yeah, that's rough. What an idiot. I mean, I've been there before where you're
- 6:49just wearing a sweatshirt when it's raining or snowing, about halfway through
- 6:53the hunt, you're like, all right, I'm ready to go home.
- 6:56Like, this just sucks. I'm not having a good time at all. Unless you're killing
- 7:00birds, because then it doesn't really matter at all. Right.
- 7:04Yeah, but six times out of 10, we have a heater. And I say six times out of 10, legitimately.
- 7:12Why don't we have it the other four out of 10 times? Because somebody forgets
- 7:15the damn propane. I can't remember everything.
- 7:19It's all right. It's not like we ever offer our propane or anything. You just.
- 7:24You didn't offer it the other day. It's not like. When you were busy getting
- 7:27hammered at your Christmas.
- 7:28Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 7:31I still made it that time. We were good to go. You made it. Yeah,
- 7:34I was there. You were not doing good.
- 7:36No, you were rough. Yeah, the first couple hours were.
- 7:40Were slightly rough on me for sure. It doesn't help that that thick of fog will
- 7:45make you feel hungover even when you're not hungover.
- 7:47And then you add a hangover on top of that and it's, I was really surprised
- 7:51you didn't vomit everywhere. Yeah, no, I'm good.
- 7:53I mean, if we could have got going fast on the boat ride too where you could
- 7:56have got that cold air to your face, that always helps me get over a hangover like that. For sure.
- 8:00But it was, like you said, so foggy and the ice that there was no going fast that morning.
- 8:05Yeah, no. So the multiple waters and Cade's Mountain Ops that I drank really
- 8:11just put me over the top. I was ready to go.
- 8:14Other than the fact that you had to go pee like every five minutes.
- 8:17Yeah, that's normal, though.
- 8:19Yeah. And there is that. Yeah, there is quite a bit of truth to that.
- 8:23But, I mean, when you drink that much water, that's just bound to happen.
- 8:30So what's your, what kind of gear do you like? What's your go-to gear?
- 8:33Oh man, I wear a hodgepodge of stuff.
- 8:37Final approach, base layer, top, Roger's pants, whatever hunting socks my family decides to get me.
- 8:46Love them for that. They restocked me on that this Christmas.
- 8:50I just recently started getting into the Sitka game. I will say I did talk a
- 8:55lot of shit on it, and I really have not been cold since I got it.
- 9:02So I have ate my words in that aspect of it. Like, I mean, I'll take it.
- 9:07I know it's expensive, but I hate being cold, so I'll just, I'll pay that price.
- 9:14I was in the same boat as you for a long time, and now Kate is the only one
- 9:18left in that boat all by himself floating away.
- 9:21I'll make it over to the good world sometimes.
- 9:25She's going to win the lottery first. Yeah.
- 9:28Or just sell that race car. Not happening. Not yet.
- 9:32No, we have to have something to do during the summertime. That's true.
- 9:36If I didn't have that thing, what would you talk shit about for the other eight
- 9:40months of the year that we're not hunting? I could find something. Yeah, I'm sure.
- 9:43I'm pretty creative on that aspect of things. That is fair. There's plenty.
- 9:48One thing I didn't mention in my gear, though, is like the base layers.
- 9:51I still use those Under Armour base layers. I think we talked about it the other day, the 2.0, 3.0.
- 9:57I think I have a pair of threes and fours is what I have.
- 10:00Oh, God. You should never own a pair of fours. No. Well, I owned them when I
- 10:03lived in North Dakota and I worked up there. Fair enough.
- 10:06Those things will roast you out of them. Yeah.
- 10:08To me, those are the best base layers I've wore to date. Yeah.
- 10:13I mean, I think that covers like the base layers and the jackets,
- 10:16but with one hot topic for the waterfowl world is waders. I mean...
- 10:23There is major differences in waders nowadays between favoritism.
- 10:28You got the Shen waders. You got Sitka waders.
- 10:31You got Drake's got some pretty good pairs of waders out there nowadays.
- 10:35Rogers has got a full line. You got Dive Bomb, which I think are basically Sitkas.
- 10:40And they look almost the exact same.
- 10:42You got the Cabela's and Bass Pro brands.
- 10:45First Light's got waders now, too. Yeah. I think Kuyu has waders.
- 10:49Kuyu does have waders, yeah. I won't buy any KU stuff anymore,
- 10:52though, after the last statement that guy put out there. That's fair.
- 10:56There's all kinds of them. I've owned a little bit of everything.
- 10:59I've owned a pair of Drakes, Rogers.
- 11:02I have a pair of Sitkas now. I have a pair of Cabela's right now because my
- 11:06Sitka's league. Both pairs.
- 11:10You have Cabela's too, right? Yeah. Pookie's in the Rich Man's Club now.
- 11:15He's got the Waiters. Yeah, first full season with him.
- 11:18And I will say going from a set of neoprene with 600 gram boots to what I have
- 11:26now, huge difference. I don't know if you guys have heard me complain about
- 11:30having cold feet once this year.
- 11:32I don't think I have. No. I mean, it really hasn't been that cold other than
- 11:36like the last little bit of season.
- 11:37Right. Yeah. We had a couple cold days like sprinkled in there and then the
- 11:41last couple of days that we've been in them.
- 11:44But I mean, honestly, my feet didn't get cold those days either.
- 11:48It wasn't just that I wasn't saying anything, which is a huge difference from
- 11:53last year because I feel like that's all you guys had to hear about was how cold my feet were and I'm,
- 12:02so happy to not be in that boat anymore. Now, do you guys know,
- 12:07does Cabela still allow you to bring your waders in every year?
- 12:11That used to be the thing we used to do all the time when I was a kid.
- 12:13We'd take our waders in after season every year and say, oh,
- 12:16these leak and get a brand new pair.
- 12:17I think they have a limit now on how many times you can do it per...
- 12:21So they keep track of that now? Yeah.
- 12:23Okay. So before, I didn't even have a receipt. I'd just take them in and say,
- 12:26oh, these leak and they'd just give me a brand new pair.
- 12:27I want to say it's like three times per purchase of waders that you can do that.
- 12:31That's still pretty good though yeah i mean that's three years
- 12:34that's not bad at all that backup pair i
- 12:37just bought for 220 bucks the boots are
- 12:40actually fairly comfortable i was very surprised by that
- 12:43and the waders aren't bad i mean they're definitely not as warm as the sitka
- 12:48gore-tex is but i mean they'll do i mean they'll do in a pinch they'll get you
- 12:53by are those just so one size fits all yeah so yeah they don't have like the
- 12:57medium large i think they have stouts yeah Yeah, they do. Oh, okay.
- 13:01Gotcha. But they don't have like the small, medium, large like Cicados.
- 13:05Like your other brands do. Gotcha.
- 13:07The thing I like about mine too is, I don't know if yours has it or not. Probably not.
- 13:11But mine's got a drawstring on top that I can tighten the top of that thing
- 13:14up. I don't think mine has that. You want to talk about staying warm,
- 13:16dude? You crank that thing down.
- 13:19Did I get ripped off? I think you did. It's probably just because mine are insulated.
- 13:23Because you got all that money. Oh, fuck.
- 13:27Watch out. I mean I had to go cheap I couldn't afford them,
- 13:32Good lord I think it's Because mine are insulated And yours aren't Oh yeah That
- 13:36probably is If you got the insulated ones though You would die Yeah no probably
- 13:40I mean I'm plenty I was plenty warm This past week and a half Of goose hunting
- 13:44In the Cabela's brand That I bought.
- 13:47I will say, I don't know. I've heard mixed reviews on Divebomb's warranties on how well they cover.
- 13:53But Sitka, I've sent a pair in almost every year other than the past two years.
- 13:58And they've given me a new pair for free. They've replaced my boots every time I've sent waiters in.
- 14:03They've either patched or fixed leaky spots that I didn't know leaked and all kinds of stuff.
- 14:09I mean, for me, it's been pretty easy to deal with them.
- 14:12I know guys have had horror stories out there, but I haven't had any bad luck with them.
- 14:16Yeah that's what you pay for when you buy sick of
- 14:19waiters is the ability to get them fixed or get new
- 14:21ones all the time trying to get them for you know a new
- 14:24pair every year or fixed for free I mean that's if
- 14:28you think about it that's the only logical way to spend a thousand dollars plus
- 14:32on a set of waiters is if they actually have the customer service to fix them
- 14:36and make it right yeah I think I so I think I paid 800 for each pair I have
- 14:41and I bought I had the marsh ones for like four or five years.
- 14:45I still got them today, but I bought the timber pair after that fourth year
- 14:50or so of using those ones, and then I got them back from Sitka, and they leaked.
- 14:53That was the first time I've sent something back, and they came back leaking
- 14:56worse, I'm pretty sure, than when I sent them in.
- 14:58So I bought another pair, and now those timber pairs leak this year.
- 15:02I want to say this is the second full season. It could be the third,
- 15:05but it's at least the second, and they're leaking now.
- 15:08So I got to send both of them. I think it has to be the third on those timber
- 15:12pairs, because they were definitely not new.
- 15:15Last year No I know they weren't New last year.
- 15:18I'm saying this would be the third season. Yeah, the third full season. You're right. Yeah.
- 15:22Which isn't bad. I know it's hard for you. All right.
- 15:26Sorry that I'm a busy person. I don't just sit in a squad car all day and do
- 15:29nothing. That's crazy, dude.
- 15:32Wow. I make fun of these guys one time, and then that's what we get.
- 15:36Listen, Linda, writing window tent tickets can't be that hard. All right. I get it.
- 15:41Yeah. Let's get off of my work and what I do and go back to talking about the
- 15:47real reason that we're here boy what would that be waterfowl gear and apparel oh okay.
- 15:56You guys got anything else you want to add for waders? Ones that don't leak,
- 15:59preferably. Yeah. Yeah, no, those are nice.
- 16:02Yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, like, regardless of what you're wearing,
- 16:07if it keeps the water off you like it's supposed to, like...
- 16:10I will say, I was not a fan of the Rogers waders. I didn't like the way the boots fit.
- 16:15And when I called them after they leaked within the first, like,
- 16:18month of using them, they just gave me the middle finger and told me to fuck
- 16:21off, basically. That's tough.
- 16:24I see Matt says he likes his shins. i've
- 16:27never personally wore them only thing i don't like about them is the
- 16:30cuffs on the boots and every time you get in the boat you drag a gallon of water
- 16:34per boot into the boat yeah absolutely i daniel wears those tideweeds that has
- 16:40the same boot design as those shins and it was kind of funny like every single
- 16:46time he'd get back in the boat he would like stand on the pod,
- 16:50and like pull out that cuff just so all that water would drain out but i have
- 16:55heard that those shins are super, super comfortable, though.
- 16:59I've heard that, too. But it's also from Delta guys, and they usually get them
- 17:03at discounted rates. That's fair.
- 17:05So I've never met anybody personally and talked to him personally that has bought
- 17:10a pair of shins full price and not got it for a discounted rate.
- 17:13People can be very biased when they're getting stuff for a discount.
- 17:17Oh, yeah, for sure. I mean, who wouldn't?
- 17:21The boot cuffs, their actual function is damn nice, though.
- 17:26They're a pain in the ass, but when you're in some ripping water and you got
- 17:28a little extra weight down there, funny. Yeah, no, makes sense. I get that.
- 17:33About a gallon of water every time you get out of the lake sucks.
- 17:37Yeah, I mean, luckily, we don't have to really hardly ever stand in water.
- 17:41We have that luxury, but.
- 17:43What about these boots that everybody wears nowadays, like these Rover boots
- 17:47or, I mean, like the Dye Bomb shoes? and what do you guys think about all that stuff?
- 17:52I know I do not like just like the rubber boot version personally, just the look of them.
- 17:58Because I would want to be able to wear it day in and day out and if I'm wanting
- 18:02something that's going to keep waterproof, I just get something that's going
- 18:03to be a knee boot and be done with it.
- 18:06But what are your guys' thoughts on those? Because those are a big thing nowadays.
- 18:10Everybody wants to wear. You are, bud. Don't look at me. Alright, that's fine.
- 18:13No, I was very skeptical at first to even get them because I didn't know how much,
- 18:19I didn't know how much I would use them and how much I'd like
- 18:22them now that I've had them for a couple months and I
- 18:24just have a cheap knockoff Amazon brand
- 18:27of them I think they were like 30 bucks on there and I absolutely love them
- 18:33like I will forever at least have some brand of these boots with me at all times
- 18:42like I I would almost go out on a limb and say that I wear these boots every single day.
- 18:47Like, whether I'm taking out the trash or running to Casey's.
- 18:53I always wear them. I definitely wear mine daily too. And I, I'm with you, Tyler.
- 18:58You look like an absolute douchebag when you wear them. But the fact that my
- 19:02feet don't get wet, no matter what, I don't really care.
- 19:05I bought the Sitka ones when they went on sale. Weird. Back in November when
- 19:10we were in North Dakota. Yeah.
- 19:13And I will say that like, they don't look like a typical mud,
- 19:17like the ankle boots or whatever, like they're out now.
- 19:19I love them. Like they're, they're, They were a little tight around the ankles
- 19:24at first where they rub you a little bit, but once you break them in after about
- 19:27two weeks of wearing them, I think they're awesome.
- 19:30And my feet stay dry up in water that's over top the regular foot part.
- 19:36Yeah, over top of your toes. Yeah.
- 19:39Rankin's just going hard for us tonight. Yeah, he is. I really appreciate that about him.
- 19:44$35 on the TikTok shop. I'm surprised that he could take a break from shooting
- 19:49them city geese to combat for us.
- 19:51Dude it's a full time job probably shooting all their bands yeah it is has to
- 19:55be has to be we killed nine geese we're not mad just jealous yeah we killed
- 20:00nine geese tonight and I we landed probably what 15 or 20 there at the end yeah
- 20:04and I did not see a single band on any of those no not one,
- 20:07I just don't have that kind of luck. And everybody gives me shit for being on
- 20:11a lucky year of shooting bands.
- 20:13Everybody says it every time I go. 35. I shoot a band. Jeez.
- 20:17I haven't even seen 35 bands in my life.
- 20:22What else we got for gear? Or apparel? Guns.
- 20:26Apparel. Well, that's gear. I meant to say apparel. I got to gear.
- 20:31Okay, well, that's not what you said, so. Oh.
- 20:35I said gear, then I changed it to apparel. Gotcha. Anyways. What else do we
- 20:38got for apparel here? Anything? We're going to move on to gear.
- 20:43I'm trying to think. Yeah, no, I mean. I mean, apparel, we got our hoodies out there.
- 20:47If anybody's wanting a hoodie, we still have some, no 2X left, but we can get them.
- 20:53We got some 3X, we got some large, and we got some extra large.
- 20:58We're running pretty low on the large and XLs, but we got some 3X available.
- 21:05For all you honey bun bandits out there yeah that's right fit Tyler here in
- 21:09the next year or so alright let's not get carried away Mr.
- 21:13Fatty over there with all the snacks everyday dogs gotta eat bud not everybody
- 21:18can have a metabolism that runs that mock Jesus I think he is shitting it out like a rabbit good lord.
- 21:30Well, let's just go on the gear. I mean, I'm going to start with goose flags
- 21:34because that's been one for us that has been a challenge through the years.
- 21:39It doesn't matter if it's a cheap one or a decent one.
- 21:43It doesn't seem like they last a full season and the little stems of the arms break. Yep.
- 21:48This year, I broke down and spent the money on the dive bomb flag,
- 21:51which I did not want to do that.
- 21:55I had been fighting myself for doing that for the past three years,
- 21:59I think, two, three years. Yeah, because you love Dive Bomb, right?
- 22:02No, I do not. Their duck decoys suck.
- 22:06That they do. It actually is really nice. It's a little brand new.
- 22:11It's a little hard to get it to lock open and closed.
- 22:13But now that we've been using it for a week and a half here,
- 22:16it's really broken and it works really well.
- 22:19But goose flags are a big thing you use for goose hunting.
- 22:23It's one of the main things. I think the only goose flag I've ever bought is
- 22:26that like $19 goose flag that Bass Pro and Shields and Cabela's.
- 22:32Yeah, but didn't you get way cheaper on Amazon a couple years ago?
- 22:34I did, yeah. And then, of course, inflation.
- 22:37You followed all that up, but I just like the flexibility in that flag. It's all the tariffs.
- 22:43Yeah, yeah. And how easy that flag is to run.
- 22:49I think that it looks super lifelike when you're using it.
- 22:52Matt says if we're flagging, we're in the wrong spot. But I believe we are just
- 22:55running traffic and probably flagging geese trying to get them to come in. Crazy.
- 22:59When you don't hunt next to Casey's in Ankeny, like you got to work for your birds. God damn.
- 23:06No, it's that dive bomb flags held up good too. And then them cheap flags,
- 23:10like the Avery's I think is what, or no Northern flight is the one that I had in my body.
- 23:15Yeah. I go through two of those a year when I'm goose hunting. Oh yeah.
- 23:19Easy. And then the dive bomb flags nice for in the boat. That was,
- 23:22it works out great for the boat. That's the real reason I wanted it.
- 23:25Yeah. To be able to pop it open and then collapse it. And that way you don't
- 23:29just have an entire flag laying on top of the boat helps.
- 23:34Yeah. I think that you see that shit whenever they're either laying out in the
- 23:38open in a field or on top of the boat.
- 23:40I mean, on top of the boat, it's a big black spot. Right. Yeah.
- 23:44I had a badass. I actually found it at Bass Pro. I was really shocked.
- 23:47It was like that fabric that is on your dive bomb flag, but it was the same.
- 23:52Like you had the arms that you put in the top piece and it had the strap on it.
- 23:56That thing lasted like three years
- 23:59and then i don't know where the hell it went gone gonzo
- 24:03but the worst part about the fabric like the the soft fabric ones those little
- 24:08arms poke through every time yeah that's and that's my biggest problem with
- 24:12them yeah and you can glue them and make it work for a little bit but it ain't
- 24:17gonna last long yeah one one windy day and that things were roasted. Yeah.
- 24:22That's how I broke mine in North Dakota.
- 24:25Yeah. That day that the wind was ripping and it just popped the rivet out of it. Yeah.
- 24:32Yeah, I mean, that's one day, like, we were hunting a feed, a pretty big feed,
- 24:35and we had to flag geese all the way in, like, the whole way in.
- 24:38You were calling fast, loud, and hard at them, and flagged.
- 24:42Austin was manning the flag like a G. Yeah.
- 24:45Kind of had the same thing today, too. A little bit, yeah. I mean,
- 24:48geese, the ones that didn't break down and turn towards us, if they did fly
- 24:52over us, like, I'd just reach out and grab it.
- 24:55And it ended up working quite a few times, actually. we either got whole groups
- 25:01to break off or at least the back couple to break off and give us a look.
- 25:07That wind dying off and also not being very much the whole hunt really hurt
- 25:11us tonight. If we'd had some wind, it'd have been over for them.
- 25:15That big group that we landed, they were kind of skirting off the edge and I'm like, fuck it.
- 25:20Grabbed the flag. As soon as I hit that thing, they were like,
- 25:22oh, hey, party. Yeah, dude, they were all trying to land next to me on my side
- 25:26of the layout line. I'm like, no, you guys need to get overkill.
- 25:30Bastards What do we got for gear here What's What's something else We can add to it,
- 25:34Pookie wanted guns That's what it is Yeah We can touch on guns I mean we're
- 25:38gonna I'm sure we'll talk about Guns and ammo here At an episode coming up But
- 25:42we can Kind of touch on what we use We can do that We can do blind bags Oh yeah,
- 25:48Yeah blind bags Really shooting at the hip here Because we didn't make a No
- 25:52dock today Spreadshot for ourselves Full scent Just coming at you guys live,
- 25:56I will say blind bags as long as it has enough room for me to put my snacks in there.
- 26:01Dude, you need a bigger blind bag than what you got now. I know.
- 26:05You need like a Yeti 65 cooler. I need to just buy another InvisiLab and just fill it full of snacks.
- 26:13Snow covers. How do you clean them?
- 26:16I don't. Throw in the trash and buy a new one. Yeah, I don't clean it.
- 26:19I mean, I might spray it off, but otherwise I just let it be muddy unless it's
- 26:23like brand new fresh snow and I need to clean it off.
- 26:26I'll try and wash it off in the shower or the tub.
- 26:29I've done that before. Otherwise, I just let it be a little dirty.
- 26:32I think it looks better when they get a little dirty and used.
- 26:35I got so excited there when we actually had snow for like a two week time period.
- 26:40And while I was in Michigan, you were able to hunt. Yeah. That was sweet.
- 26:44Yeah. And then we just ended up hunting out of an A-frame even that day.
- 26:48And I wonder where that A-frame is at.
- 26:50In my garage. Yeah. I don't think that's made it back from my house yet.
- 26:53Possession's nine tens of the law. Yeah. Yeah. No, that's fine.
- 26:55It's his now. It's fine. No, I get it.
- 26:58And two dozen of his duck full bodies are in my garage.
- 27:04And your spinners are currently in the backseat of my truck.
- 27:09I was wondering where the backpack was. I got it. Don't worry.
- 27:12They're staying nice and safe. I
- 27:14take them inside every night so they stay warm. No, you don't. Yes, I do.
- 27:19So while we're on snow covers, we can just go ahead and hit layout blinds because
- 27:22we've got all kinds of different layout blinds we use. Yeah.
- 27:25Yeah. You guys go ahead and start off with what you use. I will start for sure
- 27:29because it royally pisses me off, especially when it's cold.
- 27:33The Tangle Free Blinds.
- 27:37Are great except for the fact that they have pins. If they didn't have pins,
- 27:42they would be the best blind on the market. There's plenty of room.
- 27:46The covers on them seem like they're pretty legit. I've never had one rip or tear.
- 27:51But the fact that it has pins and they are so fucking tight that it is ungodly
- 27:56hard to get the pins in there. It sucks.
- 27:58At least you can leave yours together. Yes, that is true. Thank God that is
- 28:03true that we have the luxury to just put them in the in the trailer.
- 28:07But when I put that thing in my little 12-foot boat and go out and sit on the bank. Oh, dude. No fun.
- 28:13There's been a couple days where we had both of our layouts, like two dozen decoys.
- 28:18Me, Cade, an old hanker on the 12-footer. That's got to be fun. Western.
- 28:26Dumb ways to die. Have you used any other brands other than Tingle Free yourself?
- 28:31I had an old, just a, it was a redhead brand back when it was just Bass Pro, not. Bass Pro Cabela's.
- 28:39That thing lasted like six years, dude. I couldn't believe it.
- 28:42Really? But it was the same thing. It had the pin system. It was a pain in the ass.
- 28:46See, I liked, we used to have the Final Approaches back when Jeff was a big part of Final Approach.
- 28:52I used to love that signature series that he had with Final Approach.
- 28:56Super roomy, and I think it was also a pin design, which sucked, but it is what it is.
- 29:02I mean, when it's cold, those pins are next to impossible to get in.
- 29:06You just got to take your gloves off and just suck it up.
- 29:09I've sat in one of your Dakotas too. Like very comfortable.
- 29:13They were a lot more comfortable when they were new, but they're getting old now.
- 29:17They're probably seven or eight years old now. Seven for sure.
- 29:21Seven. And if not more, probably going to, I have two of those Alps.
- 29:27I think there's zero gravity blinds or whatever. I'm probably going to get rid
- 29:30of those and sell those after this season and buy two more of the Dakotas.
- 29:35I need to look into it. I don't think they've changed much on them.
- 29:38As long as they're not the pin system and they're still that same style they
- 29:42are now. I mean, you can set that blind up in 10 seconds. It's awesome.
- 29:47It's kind of like the old Hitman, I think. Yeah. Very similar design to that.
- 29:51Well, that goes into another thing. would you guys rather have
- 29:54camo layout blinds or solid color
- 29:57like what do you think is easier to brush in and conceal
- 30:01i'd rather have a solid color yeah same i mean the camo
- 30:04is whatever i'm gonna mud it anyways and it's gonna be damn near
- 30:07a solid color so in all
- 30:10honesty i don't think it matters because by the time you brush your
- 30:13blind in or you put a snow cover on it you're not gonna see the
- 30:16camo on it or the color on it now the solid color i
- 30:19think if you get i don't like that khaki color they come
- 30:21out with like my one of my helps blind is like that khaki yeah
- 30:25that lighter brown i think it's a little too bright like the
- 30:27dark like a brown i think is just fine because yeah it
- 30:30just looks like the dirt below you yeah basically yeah i don't i don't see why
- 30:34camo matters i don't think so either like you said you're gonna mud it anyway
- 30:39yeah it's gonna be brown yeah and if you brush your blind in anyway it's like
- 30:44in all reality you don't see a whole lot of it.
- 30:48I don't like to see any of my blind when I put brush on it. I want to just see
- 30:51the corn or the grass or whatever we're using to cover up that day.
- 30:55Because I get worried the geese are going to see that little fabric and freak out.
- 31:01Geese are just stingy that way. I hate geese. Honestly, I really hate geese.
- 31:06God, but when they do it right, it's so pretty.
- 31:09It's all right. It's nice. No, today when that group was dropping down and those
- 31:15mallards were with him too, I'm like, wow, this is really cool.
- 31:19Yeah. Or that single that about took your head off today. Yeah.
- 31:23You probably could have just knocked it out of there with your gun.
- 31:25I don't know why you had to shoot it. Well, I kind of thought about it.
- 31:27When I first popped out of my blind, I'm like, well, if I shoot this thing,
- 31:31it's going to look like that clip off the Dukes of Hazzard.
- 31:34When he's got those whammy shells, that's what that goose was going to look
- 31:37like if I would have shot him.
- 31:39Straight off my foot bag there. So I let him fly behind me before I shot him,
- 31:44you know, just to make sure that we still had something left.
- 31:48Fair enough. Yeah, that thing was at like four feet.
- 31:51You did not have much more time to shoot it before. I was almost positioned
- 31:54to get a shot off, and I know Cade was getting real close too.
- 31:57We both had to flip all the way over. For you being left-handed,
- 31:59it's a little bit easier to make that turnaround.
- 32:01Oh yeah, I could just pretty much roll right over my blind there.
- 32:06I was just letting him get more than five feet away from me.
- 32:10I was regretting eating all those little Debbie Christmas trees this year trying
- 32:13to get rolled over in that stupid layout blind to shoot that thing.
- 32:17Yeah. Well, that and you're like 60, so your bones gotta get all popped and
- 32:21cracked before you get over. I bet you hope you look this good when you're 60.
- 32:26It's hard for an old man. Difficult, dude. Every day getting out of bed is a task.
- 32:31I get it. You don't. Yeah. No, you don't. I'm close. No, you're not.
- 32:35All right. Not even close at all.
- 32:38What else we got? Well, we never did really talk much about the blind bags.
- 32:42I mean, I know, I think we have like, they're the same style blind bag. Yeah.
- 32:48I mean, they're the exact same basically, but yours is Shields Outfitters.
- 32:52Yeah. And mine's a Tingle Free.
- 32:54But like we got the big three compartment blind bag and that thing is awesome.
- 33:00Yeah. But it's not awesome for hunting in the field. No, it sucks. Yeah.
- 33:05I have the exact same style as well, too. If you can fit it. You don't. Yeah, it is.
- 33:09Oh, you do. I thought you had the smaller style. That's new and dork. Yeah.
- 33:15Yeah. Now, if you can fit our style, like if you can have the wherewithal to
- 33:20put it behind your seat, like first thing before you really start getting stuff
- 33:25in there, like it, it does work out. All right.
- 33:29But if you forget and that's the last thing you do, you might as well just plan
- 33:33on brushing that thing in behind your blind because once you get everything
- 33:38situated in there, there's no way. No.
- 33:41I used to have a hardcore layout blind bag and I still have it.
- 33:45I just don't know where it's at now.
- 33:46Like everything else I have. I was going to say, you lose everything.
- 33:49I got too much shit and it's all scattered.
- 33:52Well, I bet one of your buddies just grabbed it from your trailer and never
- 33:55brought it back. That's a real possibility.
- 33:58It's a real possibility. But it was like a single row blind
- 34:01bag and it fit perfectly in the in the layout blind
- 34:04next to me i could put it right right next to me and it wasn't in
- 34:07the way and get open it and get your shells and all
- 34:10that stuff but i mean i'm not the boat i just have the
- 34:12biggest blind bag i can have possible doesn't matter i can carry a case of shells in
- 34:15case we have a really bad shooting day which it happens yeah
- 34:19yeah no it does but i'll be i'll be interested to
- 34:22see once that backpack style comes in oh
- 34:26did you order it so no he didn't no i
- 34:29did i did order it actually and then rogers
- 34:32came back and said that it was out of stock actually so
- 34:36it's on backorder really currently so
- 34:39what brand was i think rig them
- 34:42right i'm i'm pretty sure it's a rig them right the lowdown bag so i just like
- 34:51backpack style being able to have it over my shoulders and everything keep my
- 34:56hands free for the rest of the stuff that makes sense i mean And you're a big Dora the Explorer guy.
- 35:01I was just getting ready to say, I wish he didn't already have the nickname
- 35:03Pookie because we call him Dora. Backpack, backpack.
- 35:08Yeah.
- 35:10Yeah, I know there's plenty of more gear out there to talk about.
- 35:14I mean, we'll touch on guns a little bit. I mean, I've always shot Winchester
- 35:18and Browning, but now I've got the X2, X3, X4, and then I've got the Super X pump.
- 35:25You now have an X4, right? X4 hybrid and a Remington 1100.
- 35:31What's the hybrid difference? I don't know. Oh, that's just what it is.
- 35:35I think that the only difference in it is that like my receiver and barrel are
- 35:42the only, they're Cerakoted in the flat color.
- 35:47And then just my foregrip and stock are camo.
- 35:51So it's just the difference in variances of camo where like yours are completely the same.
- 35:58Yeah. It's all one pattern instead of that different color. Makes sense.
- 36:03Yeah. Shoot the old trusty 1187.
- 36:06She's never let me down. That thing's a beast. And you can't get the choke tube
- 36:11out of it, so you're stuck shooting anyways.
- 36:13Yeah, it's stuck. That's why I got to shoot him at 60.
- 36:18Yeah. Nothing close for Cade. Nope. No. If they're within 20 yards,
- 36:22I might as well throw a rock.
- 36:24Every once in a while, I get a wild hare and bring out the Ted Williams.
- 36:28You know, if I think that the blind is lacking some color of shells on it,
- 36:33And then I bring out the purple shells and we break out the 16 gauge.
- 36:37You know, we just found a purple shell on that jet sled. I know.
- 36:39Yeah. I heard. I heard about it. What'd you say about that?
- 36:42Oh, I think some gay boy was around here. Yeah.
- 36:46Something like that. That thing's sweet though. That gun's older than me.
- 36:49Like it. It's great. It's not staying much.
- 36:53What are you, like, 17 now? Yes, just turned.
- 36:58Well, you're going to jail. You're drinking on camera. Mm. Mm. Cut your permission.
- 37:06Well, shit. I'm with Dad, so it should be fine.
- 37:11No, no, it's not. All right. We'll go ahead and get the cops on their way in
- 37:15a little bit. Yep. We'll finish this out first, and then we'll get the cops coming.
- 37:19What else we got for gear and apparel? We got all kinds of gear. I mean.
- 37:25What about dog blinds? That's what I was just getting right there.
- 37:27I just looked at Hank's blind sitting there.
- 37:29I mean. We've got the same blinds now for our dogs. Yeah.
- 37:33Ellie's always had that Momosh blind that I use in the field or in the water if I have to.
- 37:38Which is very rare that I ever have to walk in. But unless I'm on out of state.
- 37:42Yeah, we did use it once last year with her too. In that little back pocket. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah.
- 37:49She's not a big fan of it. She definitely prefers to be in the boat.
- 37:52But she would much prefer that over standing in the water like she had to in Michigan.
- 37:56She was not a fan of that. Hank has done that like four different times.
- 38:01And just from him standing in the water, he wears out so bad.
- 38:05Totally not worth just having the dog stand in the water. That thing is worth its money 10 times over.
- 38:12I want one for the fields. I want one that has the door that I can open and close.
- 38:18So that way I can run the dog in the field more.
- 38:22And not worry about the dog breaking and getting shot on a hunt.
- 38:26Like I'm most of the time we're hunting with all of us close friends where we
- 38:30don't got to worry about that.
- 38:31But you never know in any kind of circumstance when an accident could happen
- 38:35because accidents are accidents. So, right.
- 38:39I would like to have like one of those Dakotas or just a custom made one with
- 38:43a door on it with the spring latch where we could run the dogs in the fields.
- 38:47And days like today where we're killing one or two here and there,
- 38:50we can let the dogs do their thing and have fun. Yeah.
- 38:53Instead of sitting at the house going, Ellie was very mad at me today when I
- 38:57left without her. Yeah. Yeah. Hank was pissed.
- 39:00He was pissed when I got home. He knew it was up. Yeah. I'm sure he'd be really
- 39:04mad if he knew that we actually killed geese today too.
- 39:06He walked straight to the tailgate of my truck and was like, you motherfuckers.
- 39:15I love how you're just looking around for anything you can find.
- 39:18I had all kinds of ideas for gear the other day when I made the Google Doc,
- 39:22but it was like 10 o'clock at night when I changed it over from episode eight
- 39:25to nine. I didn't write any of it down. Right.
- 39:29And God forbid anybody else do anything. No, that's wild.
- 39:33No, never. No, Kate usually does a pretty good job of starting the Google doc.
- 39:36And I mean, Austin will fill stuff in. And then Kate usually comes in and deletes
- 39:39everything we put in and puts his own stuff in.
- 39:41It's just kind of like, honestly been a wild week though. Like just.
- 39:45Well, between us trying to get this set up to do, start doing live streams,
- 39:50which we plan on doing more often now.
- 39:53Right. Yeah. I mean, at least hopefully every week, at least when we're together
- 39:58for sure. Yeah. like when we're all together for sure.
- 40:01But we've all got cameras now, good cameras, where we can have good quality video.
- 40:05We just got to get Austin to buy a decent mic instead of one off of Timu.
- 40:09Maybe some internet. I'll work on that. Maybe some internet that's also not
- 40:13off Timu. Yeah, not Timu internet.
- 40:15I don't know what's up with that. I don't know. It's so crazy because it's so
- 40:18fast and then it'll just cut out for like five minutes.
- 40:21It doesn't make any sense. And then it just pops back up like nothing happened.
- 40:26You don't live that far away from where we're at right now. and it's the same company.
- 40:30No, we definitely have the same internet. We've already talked about this. I don't understand.
- 40:35They came and replaced my router and everything without me even having to contact them.
- 40:41I don't get it. It's a work in progress with it.
- 40:45I mean, it is better than it was before for sure, but we'll see what we can't
- 40:50get figured out and just go from there, I guess.
- 40:55Right. One thing I wanted to touch on while we're here,
- 40:58This goose season, we've really noticed the bird flu hitting us pretty hard around here.
- 41:03I know it's kind of off topic, but we're in the middle of goose season here,
- 41:07and right at the heart of it.
- 41:10The first day I got home, we hunted the river. It was wild, the amount of geese
- 41:14we've seen floating down the river dead.
- 41:16Or the geese we see on the sandbars or wherever on the lake,
- 41:20too. Just bobbing their head, doing circles, just roasting.
- 41:24I mean, it's been every day, but today. Well, there was one in the field that had.
- 41:28When I first pulled in. Oh, nice. Okay, so every day that we've hunted,
- 41:32we've seen at least one. Yep.
- 41:34And there's two in the cove where we hunted yesterday, or the day before,
- 41:39still standing on the ice right now, going, oh, I wish we could fly away.
- 41:43Yeah, no, honestly, it's really a sad thing to see.
- 41:47I was kind of hopeful when a lot of water opened back up that it would keep
- 41:53geese spread out, but we got this cold snap again, so that'll get them back
- 41:58congregated and that makes me a little nervous.
- 42:01I wonder what, because a buddy of ours brought it up to me, it doesn't seem
- 42:06like you hear about the bird flu in Canada or on the tundra.
- 42:10It doesn't seem like you hear about it near as bad as you do here in the States.
- 42:13I wonder why that is or if it's just less people see it up there and you don't hear about it as much.
- 42:20Yeah, it's a lot more open area, I guess. We have a lot more towns and little
- 42:24cities and all that kind of shit. Or you could drive for God knows how long
- 42:29and not see another person in Canada.
- 42:30I think we've also drove. They used to be more congregated and ducks in general
- 42:35too. Yeah. In the States than they do in Canada.
- 42:38And obviously once they get dipped in Tundra, there's nobody there.
- 42:44No, they're definitely pressured into being more congregated,
- 42:47especially around here.
- 42:51I wish there was something we could do about it, prevent it,
- 42:53but I don't think there's anything.
- 42:55I mean, unless it's something kind of farming practice or something that we're
- 42:58putting in our waters that's causing it or whatever, however it may be.
- 43:02But I don't see what else you can do to prevent it.
- 43:07Yeah, that's about the only thing you can do to look at the difference between the U.S.
- 43:11And Canada to see if they have different restrictions on what they can put in their fields.
- 43:17Probably narrow it down pretty quick. Yeah. Definitely could.
- 43:20I mean, we pump a lot of shit in our ground. Yeah.
- 43:23I mean, I wish they would quit putting as much stuff in the ground and let,
- 43:27for like the pheasants, quit killing all the natural grass and stuff off that,
- 43:33grows between the crops normally.
- 43:34But obviously, they won't get as high of a yield. So that's why they do it.
- 43:39Money makes the world go around. Just the cost of doing business. Yeah.
- 43:44Well I mean So what's our plans for this week Coming up I know it's New Years,
- 43:49Are we going to get wet and wild this week On New Years or are we going to go
- 43:53hunting I'm going hunting,
- 43:56Every afternoon After work I hope Oh yeah you got to work every morning so you
- 44:01can't get Wet and wild on New Years Eve and New Years I'm back to work at 05
- 44:05starting tomorrow For the next five days so,
- 44:10Oh poor guy Are you going to make it?
- 44:13It's been a long time since I've had to work five days straight.
- 44:16That's a lot. Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:19So. Oh, damn. I'll report back next week on our podcast. Maybe.
- 44:25I hope. He might be dead. Yeah, I don't know. You never know. You never know.
- 44:31Well, I plan on hunting. I know tomorrow I won't hunt. More than likely I won't hunt tomorrow.
- 44:37I'm going to go, where are we going to hunt? I don't know.
- 44:40What the heck are you going to do all day? Why don't you go find some geese
- 44:43to hunt in the afternoon?
- 44:44Oh, damn. I'm going to scout in the morning, and then I have to get stuff out
- 44:49of the house, get that cleaned up a little bit.
- 44:51I suppose that checks out. I could scout in the evening, or we could hunt the
- 44:54same field again tomorrow afternoon, which is a possibility.
- 44:59Or I just scout tomorrow morning and evening, figure out kind of the general
- 45:03idea of what geese are doing now that we're mostly froze back up in the normal
- 45:07areas we're mostly frozen. percent.
- 45:10And go from there. Yeah. Because I think we're going to have people coming up
- 45:15Thursday sometime, it sounds like.
- 45:18So they'll be here, I'm guessing Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 45:20So I got to get some good fields lined up for them.
- 45:23They like to come up every year for this.
- 45:25Normally it's the last weekend of Central Zone, but this year they're coming up early.
- 45:30I talked them into it, which looking at how many geese we have right now congregated
- 45:34in this one area, not good.
- 45:38Less geese than I've ever seen before for this time of year.
- 45:42But stuff is just now starting to refreeze too. So I do think that we will continue
- 45:48to see more and more birds over the next couple days, at least around home here.
- 45:53I haven't ventured out very far either for scouting. I mean,
- 45:55we've just stayed in our normal little square that we hunt in here.
- 45:59I mean, there's plenty of geese in that square to kill if you can get access
- 46:03in the fields that they're feeding in.
- 46:04Right. but I think if I go farther up I can find access find birds I wouldn't
- 46:10be too worried about it at this point,
- 46:13not good are you I'm working every day but you're going to hunt every evening
- 46:19if you find something for us to hunt I'm going to hunt every evening I think
- 46:24Cade's going to hunt Thursday,
- 46:27as long as you don't got to you don't got to work Thursday Thursday and get
- 46:31back to work you'll be down to hunt Friday morning,
- 46:35depends if they want to get their shit done tomorrow,
- 46:39well hopefully you just get everything done tomorrow and you don't gotta worry
- 46:42about it yeah that'd be sweet that'd be awesome that'd be ideal yeah more than ideal.
- 46:48I mean, has anybody else got anything they want to add while we're still here?
- 46:52If not, I mean, I don't see a whole lot more to really touch on on this subject. No.
- 46:58I don't think so. I think we're good. You think so?
- 47:02Does Rankin think so? That's the most important part. He's probably not here
- 47:06anymore. It's way past his bedtime. You think I'm old?
- 47:09That dude's like 75. He's still out here grinding, though.
- 47:13No, he's killing bands. Yeah. He hasn't slowed down nearly as much as you have.
- 47:21That's kind of fucked up let's wrap it up that's kind of fucked up I'm gonna
- 47:27do this without being able to hear the music so this is gonna be kind of fucked
- 47:30up it's gonna be interesting.
