- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it is the 28th
- 0:16of May and what an exciting day this is.
- 0:19This is the day that pastoral carers, chaplains, spiritual
- 0:22carers from all around Tasmania are driving into the little town
- 0:27of Campbelltown in the middle of our state, where we are going to
- 0:30come together and learn all about how to nurture ourselves,
- 0:33care for ourselves as we care for others.
- 0:36And my fantastic, fantastic, amazing old friend Jim has flown
- 0:40all the way down to Tassie to come and share his wisdom with
- 0:43us. And I get to drive all the way
- 0:45there and back with him all to myself.
- 0:48What a treat, what a day. I hope your day is going to be a
- 0:52good one or has been a good one, wherever you are, no matter what
- 0:55is happening, we get to put it all down and come before our God
- 1:01as we continue to hear what He has to speak to us through this
- 1:05amazing book of Hebrews. And yesterday we heard all about
- 1:08these people who live these lives of faith.
- 1:12And today our focus shifts back to God and His goodness, His
- 1:17discipline, and His love for us. So why don't you join me
- 1:21friends, as we read together Hebrews chapter 12?
- 1:34Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd
- 1:38of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every
- 1:43weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so
- 1:46easily trips us up, and let us run with endurance the race God
- 1:51has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes
- 1:55on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith
- 2:01because of the joy awaiting him. He endured the cross,
- 2:05disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of
- 2:10honour beside God's throne. Think of all the hostility he
- 2:15endured from sinful people. Then you won't become weary and
- 2:18give up. After all, you have not yet
- 2:22given your lives and your struggle against sin.
- 2:25And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to
- 2:29you as His children? He said, My child, don't make
- 2:34light of the Lord's discipline, and don't give up when He
- 2:37corrects you. For the Lord disciplines those
- 2:40He loves, and He punishes each one he accepts as His child.
- 2:46As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is
- 2:50treating you as His own children.
- 2:52Whoever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father?
- 2:56If God doesn't discipline you as He does all of His children, it
- 3:00means that you are illegitimate and are not really His children
- 3:03at all. Since we respected our earthly
- 3:06fathers who disciplined us, shouldn't we submit even more to
- 3:11the discipline of the Father of our spirits and live forever?
- 3:17For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years,
- 3:20doing the best they knew how. But God's discipline is always
- 3:25good for us so that we might share in His Holiness.
- 3:30No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening.
- 3:33It's painful. But afterward there will be a
- 3:37peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in
- 3:41this way. So take a new grip with your
- 3:44tired hands and strengthen your weak knees.
- 3:47Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are
- 3:51weak and lame will not fall but become strong.
- 3:56Work at living in peace with everyone and work at living a
- 4:01holy life for those who are not holy will not see the Lord.
- 4:06Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the
- 4:11grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root
- 4:15of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many.
- 4:21Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded
- 4:25his birthright as the first born son for a single meal.
- 4:30You know that afterward, when he wanted his father's blessing, he
- 4:33was rejected. It was too late for repentance,
- 4:37even though he begged with bitter tears.
- 4:41You have not come to a physical mountain, to a place of flaming
- 4:44fire, darkness, gloom, and whirlwind, as the Israelites did
- 4:49at Mount Sinai. For they heard an awesome
- 4:52trumpet blast and a voice so terrible that they begged God to
- 4:56stop speaking. They staggered back under God's
- 4:59command. If even an animal touches the
- 5:03mountain, it must be stoned to death.
- 5:06Moses himself was so frightened at the sight that he said, I am
- 5:11terrified and trembling. No, you have come to Mount Zion,
- 5:17to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to
- 5:22countless thousands of angels in a joyful gathering.
- 5:27You have come to the assembly of God's first born children whose
- 5:31names are written in heaven. You have come to God Himself,
- 5:35who is the judge over all things.
- 5:38You have come to the spirits of the righteous ones in heaven who
- 5:42have now been made perfect. You have come to Jesus, the One
- 5:47who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and the
- 5:53sprinkled blood, which speaks of forgiveness instead of crying
- 5:57out for vengeance like the blood of Abel.
- 6:01Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the one who
- 6:03is speaking, for if the people of Israel did not escape when
- 6:07they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will
- 6:11certainly not escape if we reject the one who speaks to us
- 6:14from heaven. When God spoke from Mount Sinai,
- 6:19His voice shook the earth, but now He makes another promise.
- 6:25Once again I will shake not only the earth, but the heavens also.
- 6:32This means that all the creation will be shaken and removed so
- 6:36that only unshakable things will remain.
- 6:40Since we are receiving a Kingdom that is unshakable, let us be
- 6:45thankful and please God by worshipping Him with holy fear
- 6:50and awe, for our God is a devouring fire.
- 6:55Oh Jesus, you know that it's hard
- 7:08for us because we are surrounded by this world, rich and intense
- 7:13and present and physical. And Lord, as we hear the birds
- 7:17chirping in the trees, Lord, we know that all of this is indeed
- 7:22shakeable. And this beautiful image that
- 7:25you give us in the book of Hebrews where the world will be
- 7:28shaken and we can just imagine it being shaken and all falling
- 7:32away and leaving only the unshakable things, which is you,
- 7:38your Kingdom, your love, our identity in you, and the calling
- 7:45and mission and vocation that you give us as your children.
- 7:51Oh Jesus, fine tune our focus so that truly we can see the
- 7:58unshakeable things brightly and clearly and that all these
- 8:03transient, shakeable items which are here today but gone
- 8:08eternally, but they would not be louder and brighter than your
- 8:13eternal things. So we recommit ourselves to you
- 8:17and your unshakeable Kingdom. Jesus, Use us, shape us, guide
- 8:23us, and ultimately welcome us back into your embrace.
- 8:27When all is said and done, we love you and we pray all of this
- 8:32in your saving name, Jesus, Amen.
