- 0:00Speaker 1: To go over this college football stuff a couple of
- 0:02different perspectives. Most of the major websites and publication type
- 0:12things update their college football playoff rankings the teams that
- 0:19are most likely to get in.
- 0:21Speaker 2: You know, it's so funny.
- 0:23Speaker 1: For years and years, I mean several years, we would
- 0:26look at the bowl projections every week. I've scarcely even
- 0:30glanced I think one time I looked at a bowl
- 0:32projection list. This is all about the playoff, obviously, unless
- 0:36you're in the G five league and the chances of
- 0:39you getting into the playoff are slim.
- 0:43Speaker 2: But we've talked about that.
- 0:44Speaker 1: There's been more conversation about the G five teams this
- 0:50season and ever before because there's going to be a
- 0:52slot for a G five team in the playoff. So
- 0:56that's why we're paying more attention to who Army plays
- 0:59and who Navy. And by the way, pretty big G
- 1:01five game this week in Memphis, Memphis against North Texas
- 1:05and both teams looking to stay out of near the
- 1:09top of the American Conference race. But anyway, there's different
- 1:13perspectives on this. Heather Dinnich is the longtime writer college
- 1:17football writer for ESPN. She is deep in the weeds
- 1:19all the time and listen, and she's really really good,
- 1:21and she's very very well connected with the playoff committee.
- 1:25They respect her. So she finds out and unearths little
- 1:29things here and there and goes to all that. Well,
- 1:32she projects the top twelve because it is, after all,
- 1:36a twelve three playoff. Now she offers the disclaimer, and
- 1:42I think it's a good thing that she does because
- 1:44people could get really confused, and they might get confused anyway,
- 1:48but she offers the disclaimer. As she ranks the top
- 1:52twelve teams for the playoff, she says expected to be
- 2:00reconfigured because remember the top four Power four conference champions
- 2:06received buys anyway, So she could rank three SEC teams
- 2:12in the top four, but only one is going to
- 2:13get a buy out of that top four. The conference champion,
- 2:16ever wins that conference championship game in Atlanta, will be
- 2:20the one that draws that on December seventh. All right,
- 2:22So nevertheless, this is how she's ranking them right now.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Number one. Yeah, it's Texas still number.
- 2:29Speaker 1: One, and because as she says, Texas is a strong
- 2:34case with a true road win at Michigan. You hear that,
- 2:37those of you who are discounting that win at Michigan
- 2:41and now a neutral site winning in Trival, Oklahoma, they're
- 2:44also looking the part of an sec A national title contender.
- 2:47But then she points out the do Oregon is coming
- 2:50up fast. But what she says about Texas in her
- 2:53category and her paragraph why they could be here in
- 2:57the playoff, She says the long words disman rival Oklahoma
- 3:01with no hint of an upset, adding what could be
- 3:04a win against a second ranked opponent to their resume
- 3:08in addition to Michigan. Even if neither are here's this
- 3:11is an important thing people need to understand. Listen to
- 3:14these words and I quote even if neither Michigan nor
- 3:20Oklahoma are ranked on selection day, as long as both
- 3:24opponents finish five hundred or better, the committee will still
- 3:28consider them respectable wins, and a non conference road win
- 3:32in ann Arbor is still better than what multiple other contenders.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Have in their non conference lineup.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Now let me also add this too, Oklahoma better win
- 3:42this week against South Carolina. If the Sooners don't, I'm
- 3:46here to tell you, Cameron Parker, the only definite win
- 3:50I see on the Sooner's remaining schedule after this week
- 3:53is Maine when they play them on Cupcake Week. Other
- 3:57than that, they's nothing guaranteed with that finishing schedule they have.
- 4:02And if that happens and he lose that game in
- 4:03hot Coon, they're staring five and seven square in the face.
- 4:06But if they beat South Carolina at the very least,
- 4:09they'll get BAWL eligible with the win over May and
- 4:13that would actually help Texas. But of course, as long
- 4:15as Texas is remaining undefeated, it doesn't really matter that
- 4:17much anyway. So it said, oh, you enter the game
- 4:22ranked in the top twenty and both defensive and special
- 4:25teams efficiency, and Texas was able to run the ball
- 4:27against the Sooners and out gain them four hundred six
- 4:29to two hundred and thirty seven toty yards, So that's
- 4:32important to be there. And then she adds the paragraph
- 4:36why they could be lower than where they're ranked, which
- 4:38is number one. Oregon now has one of the best
- 4:40wins in the country and a case for the top spot.
- 4:42The committee would also respect the Ducks road win at
- 4:46rival Oregon State, which is foreign too and the committee,
- 4:50and the victory against Boise State is probably a win
- 4:52against a ranked opponent. Some Committee members might think the
- 4:55Ducks have better wins than Texas.
- 4:57Speaker 2: And can make a case for it. And then she.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Has a third category call need to know it says
- 5:04the selection committee considers injuries to keep players as part
- 5:08of its protocol, so some of their conversation about Texas
- 5:11would include the play off quarterback win viewers. He overcame
- 5:13a sluggish start with a sack on the first playing
- 5:15an interception on his first pass to help Texas win
- 5:18after sitting out a month because of an oblique injury.
- 5:21Texas coach t Sarkisian has made it clear there's no
- 5:23quarterback controversy with backup arch Manning, and Saturday's game was
- 5:26evidence of the committee the long words have two quarterbacks
- 5:29who can win. So Texas is number one. She has
- 5:33Oregon number two, Penn State third. Okay, there's two Big
- 5:37ten teams there, so remember one of them would not
- 5:39be in the top four. Oh Ohio State fourth. That's
- 5:41three Big ten teams in the top four. Then she
- 5:46has Georgia number five, so Texas is playing in Georgia.
- 5:49It's the number one versus number five ranked team in
- 5:51the country in the AP pole and also in her
- 5:55college football playoff rankings. Alabama is six, Miami seven, Clemson eight,
- 6:01BYU nine, and Boise State ten. But as she points out,
- 6:06obviously there's going to be shuttling around on that deal,
- 6:09especially in the top four as that goes there.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Now, in addition to that one thing that again.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I read multiple articles and takes and watch videos of
- 6:23different people who cover this beat of college football and
- 6:28the playoff extensively. Scott Dortman is the guy who writes
- 6:33for the Athletic and what he does is he does
- 6:37what's called a contender check. And what he does with
- 6:40that is he ranks the top one and two lost teams.
- 6:45So Texas isn't in this thing obviously, the top one
- 6:48and two lost teams. He has three categories. The first
- 6:52one is called well positioned. Number one in the well
- 6:56positioned is Ohio State. They're five and one. Number two
- 7:00is Clemson at five and one, three is Georgia at
- 7:02five and one. Fourth is Texas A and M at
- 7:05five and one. Fifth is Tennessee at five and one.
- 7:08Six is Alabama at five and one. Seventh is LSU
- 7:11at five and one. Sensing a pattern here, there's all
- 7:14sec there. Notre Dame is eighth at five and one,
- 7:18So there's a top eight with well positioned. The second
- 7:22category is called have something to prove. Number nine is
- 7:27Missouri at five and one, Tennis Illinois at five and one,
- 7:32eleven is SMU at five and one, twelve is Duke
- 7:36at five and one, thirteen, Kansas State at five and one, fourteen,
- 7:39Arizona State.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Five and one.
- 7:42Speaker 1: He writes, no matter what happens the rest of the season,
- 7:44the Sun Devils have put together a remarkable turnaround from
- 7:46last year's three.
- 7:47Speaker 2: And nine campaign. Remember how close Texas State was to
- 7:50beating them.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Texas Tech is in that category at fifteen at five
- 7:57and one, Nebraska is sixteen at five and one, EYRACU
- 8:00seventeen at five on one. Now here's the third category.
- 8:04It's called two loss teams with a faint heart beat.
- 8:07Eighteen Ole, miss at five and two, nineteen, Iowa at
- 8:10four and two, twenty Arkansas at four and two, twenty one,
- 8:14Colorado at four and two, twenty two, Oklahoma at four
- 8:20and two have the faint heartbeat. Oh and then he's
- 8:23got a two loss code red, which is Wisconsin at
- 8:27four in two at twenty three, Michigan at four and
- 8:29two at twenty four, Utah at twenty five at four
- 8:33and two, Boston College at four and TUO twenty six,
- 8:35Cincinnati four and two at twenty seven, Rutgers at four
- 8:39and two twenty eight, Vanderbilt four and two at twenty nine,
- 8:43in Virginia four and two at thirty. He also adds
- 8:45Louisville at four and two at thirty one, in Georgia
- 8:48Tech at five and two at thirty two.
- 8:50Speaker 2: I would put Oklahoma in the Code RED. I think
- 8:54Vanderbilts better than Oklahoma. I'm more afraid that Oklahoma.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Vanderbilt's got a better win. Texas has to play them
- 9:03there in Nashville. Coming up a week from this weekend
- 9:06min how things can change during the course of a
- 9:08college football season. We'll be back to wrap Abour number
- 9:11two on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
