- 0:00SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you know about cortisol.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: I've talked about it before.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: But it's a stress hormone that our body produces,
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: which we need when we're in fight or flight situations.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: And it's useful for that.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: It can help us to get out of danger.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: It's also destructive for us if we're under it for too much time.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: And yet,
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: if you look up cortisol addiction or dependency,
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: On the internet, it's like all the symptoms are symptoms of my daily life.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Looks like a chapter of my day.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: All these sorts of things,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: I just can't stop looking for cortisol hits,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: spending my day filled with the stress and anxiety.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: I almost have to do this to myself.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: I can't be still.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: I can't be at peace because I've become dependent upon this.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: A cortisol hit definitely gives you a feeling of urgency and connection.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: And that's something that we can become dependent on and stress hormones are exactly
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: the opposite of peace.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And the gospel today talks about peace.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And I think first we should be clear what we mean by peace.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Because I think, again,
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: in our current context,
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: we can think of peace as being the absence of war or a state of relative calm in
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: that sense.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: And so if you see bumper stickers,
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: that say, you know, visualize world peace or visualize world peace, as I've seen.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: What they're talking about is the absence of armed conflict.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: That's sort of the secular definition of peace.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And that's not the peace that this gospel talks about.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Christ says,
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: whenever you enter into a house,
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: say peace be to this household and your peace will go and rest on him.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: That's not an absence.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: It's going and resting on him.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: That's a presence.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: It's a bit of an odd image and perhaps a little bit of an alarming one as
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: if this peace was sort of this thing or some kind of a force or cloud that's going
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: and resting on people.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: But That peace is the peace of having secure relationship.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: That's what peace is.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Peace, in that sense, is security.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: There is,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: in a sense,
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: an absence of conflict, but it's because there's a presence of relationship.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: There's a presence of security.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: There's a presence in my life.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: I don't have to worry because I'm protected.
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: I'm secure.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Have peace.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: That's the peace that the presence of God gives us,
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: this being, connectedness, relationship in my life.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And it's the opposite of worry, concern, and fear.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Love drives out fear.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Relationship drives out anything that is the opposite of peace,
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: any conflict,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: despair,
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: all of those things,
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: they're driven out by love,
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: by relationship, by connectedness, by that presence of God in my life.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: But just as surely as love drives out fear, fear can also drive out love.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: If I'm binging on fear,
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: if I'm addicted to fear, Cortisol, if I need to get my stress hit to keep going.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And that's why I wonder from a,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: psychologically speaking,
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: a behavioralistic point of view,
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: behavioralism in psychology says,
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: show me what you do and I'll tell you who you are, right?
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Because I might say to you, I love the poor.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: They'll say, okay, that's wonderful.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: I'm glad you love the poor.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: What do you do for the poor?
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't really do anything for the poor, but you know, I really love the poor.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: I'd say, well,
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I don't think you really do love the poor because you're not doing anything for
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: that.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Show me your actions and I'll get a glimpse into what you really believe to be at
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: the heart of your life.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: So I think we all want peace.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: We say that we want peace.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: We want our lives to be free from anxiety and pain and stress and all those bad things.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: And yet what do we do?
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: We're constantly...
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Pumping negativity and fear and distress into our lives via our news feeds,
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: via our social media channels, via our TVs and computers.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: We can't stop.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: And there again,
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: from that behavioralistic point of view,
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I would say, if you want peace, you have to work for it.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: You have to put your desire into practice.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: You have to turn away from those things.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: You have to limit your exposure to toxic people and toxic environments
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: and toxic web feeds and news channels that are filling your life with anxiety
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: and fear and taking away your peace.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: You want peace.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Do it.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Have the courage to do it.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: Have the courage to do what it takes to foster that sense of peace.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: It's a strange image, this image that we have.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Of someone coming into our house and this peace going out from them and resting upon people.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And I'm sure you've all had that experience in your lives.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: When you come to a group, you're with someone who is a person who has deep peace in their life.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And you can sense that immediately.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And they calm everything down.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: They like to be with them because they give you a sense of peace and calm and security.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: You can't give what we don't have.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: But that's what we're called to be.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: That's what the Lord is asking us to be,
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: to be people of peace,
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: to be people who when we walk into a house, peace flows out from us into that house.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: And if there's no peace there,
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: it comes back to us because I have inside of myself a well of peace
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: because I have found my connection and relationship and presence with God.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: That's what God wants to be in my life.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: That's what he wants to give me in this Eucharist in every encounter
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: that I have Let us ask him for that grace,
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: the grace to be people of peace,
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: grace to be people who are secure in that relationship and who can transmit that
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: to those around us.
