- 0:00Speaker 1: Tennessee crossed the goal line six times in Columbia today. Six. However,
- 0:06Speaker 1: three of them were the only ones that counted. You've
- 0:10Speaker 1: got to start there. You've got to sit with that
- 0:12Speaker 1: for a second. Because tomorrow morning, a lot of people
- 0:15Speaker 1: are going to glance at a final score and see
- 0:17Speaker 1: walk-off field goal in the headline and understand or think
- 0:22Speaker 1: they understand what happened at Williams-Brice Stadium. They don't. This
- 0:26Speaker 1: wasn't a team that got outclassed. This wasn't a team
- 0:30Speaker 1: that got exposed. This was a team that played well
- 0:33Speaker 1: enough to win as a road dog, scored enough to win,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and still walked off the field with its head unfortunately
- 0:39Speaker 1: held down. So how does that happen? And more importantly,
- 0:45Speaker 1: what does it mean for everything Tennessee still wants out
- 0:48Speaker 1: of this season? My name is TJ Pittenger. This is
- 0:51Speaker 1: SEC Football Addiction, and We're presented by PrizePix, where all
- 0:54Speaker 1: new users who play a $ 5 lineup and win get
- 0:57Speaker 1: $ 150 in lineups instantly. They use code HMA. If you're
- 1:03Speaker 1: a Vols fan and watching this, I know how this feels.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Exactly one week ago, you guys were on top of
- 1:12Speaker 1: the world. Third Saturday in October, Alabama comes to Knoxville.
- 1:15Speaker 1: They leave with a 26 to 10 loss, five sacks
- 1:18Speaker 1: on their quarterback and barely more than 50 rushing yards.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Tennessee won both lines of scrimmage. Deshaun Bishop went crazy
- 1:26Speaker 1: and the whole country starts saying the same thing. Hey,
- 1:29Speaker 1: wait a minute. Maybe Tennessee is for real. Then you
- 1:32Speaker 1: go on the road, you face a South Carolina team
- 1:34Speaker 1: that's sitting at 500, a team that had just won
- 1:37Speaker 1: at Florida. Sure. But a team that started oh, and
- 1:40Speaker 1: three in conference play and a head coach who's seat
- 1:45Speaker 1: may have cooled a little bit because of that game
- 1:46Speaker 1: in Gainesville, but it was certainly still very, very warm.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And Tennessee was ranked 11th in the country. They somehow
- 1:54Speaker 1: walked into that stadium today as an underdog, not by much.
- 1:58Speaker 1: It was about a field goal or so, but Vegas
- 2:02Speaker 1: saw what else was happening in this matchup. They were
- 2:08Speaker 1: arrested home team off of a buy. It was a
- 2:11Speaker 1: hostile crowd. It was a quarterback in Lenora Sellers who
- 2:13Speaker 1: can wreck your entire afternoon with his legs. And for
- 2:16Speaker 1: about the first seven minutes, Vegas looked like geniuses. I
- 2:19Speaker 1: want to walk through this game real quick because the
- 2:22Speaker 1: story isn't the ending. It's everything that happened before it.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I want to talk about three things that stuck out
- 2:30Speaker 1: to me in this, and then we'll move on. South
- 2:33Speaker 1: Carolina gets the ball first. They go 10 plays, 75 yards.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Sellers is completing everything. Short throws, quick rhythm. Nothing complicated
- 2:41Speaker 1: on first and 15 from the Tennessee 17. He dumped
- 2:44Speaker 1: it off to Bennett Jr. Bennett finds an open lane
- 2:47Speaker 1: all the way to the end zone. It's 7-0. Tennessee
- 2:49Speaker 1: goes three and out. An incompletion, a false start, a
- 2:51Speaker 1: short completion, another incompletion, a punt. And it gets worse.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Two plays. That's all South Carolina needed to find DJ
- 2:59Speaker 1: Black for 27 yards. On the very next snap, Sellers
- 3:02Speaker 1: pulls it, escapes the poppikit, and runs for a 31-yard
- 3:06Speaker 1: touchdown to go up 14-0. The Tennessee defense, a unit
- 3:12Speaker 1: that came into this game giving up under 15 points
- 3:15Speaker 1: a game, top 10 in the country, looked completely lost.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Sellers had over 120 yards and two scores before the
- 3:21Speaker 1: Volunteers even had a first down. Now, I will tell you,
- 3:25Speaker 1: this is where you find out what your team is
- 3:26Speaker 1: made of. Because A lot of teams down two touchdowns
- 3:30Speaker 1: on the road in the SEC start pressing. They abandon
- 3:33Speaker 1: what they do. They try to throw their way back
- 3:36Speaker 1: into a game. Tennessee didn't do that. They went to
- 3:38Speaker 1: Deshaun Bishop, and they went to Bishop again and again.
- 3:41Speaker 1: A drive that lasted more than nine minutes. They even...
- 3:44Speaker 1: had a 35-yard touchdown along the way, but an illegal
- 3:47Speaker 1: shift brought it back. None of that mattered. They kept grinding.
- 3:51Speaker 1: They faced a fourth and one at the South Carolina 33.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Bishop moved the chains. They ground it and ground it
- 3:57Speaker 1: and ground it, and finally Bishop grounds it in from
- 3:59Speaker 1: one yard out. 14-7. More importantly, Sellers spent nine minutes
- 4:04Speaker 1: standing on the sidelines. The defense finally shows up. Sellers
- 4:08Speaker 1: throws one he shouldn't. Metcalf picks it up, sets the
- 4:11Speaker 1: Vols deep in Gamecock territory. Tennessee gets inside the one.
- 4:16Speaker 1: They don't go to Bishop. They go to your tight end,
- 4:18Speaker 1: and he walks it in. 14-all. South Carolina answers with
- 4:22Speaker 1: a long drive of their own. 17 plays, more than
- 4:24Speaker 1: six minutes. They get to first and goal at the
- 4:26Speaker 1: Tennessee 5. The Tennessee defense says no. South Carolina has
- 4:31Speaker 1: to settle for a field goal at 17-14. That goal
- 4:34Speaker 1: line stand, a four-point swing, it felt like it was
- 4:38Speaker 1: going to matter. On the next drive for Tennessee, South
- 4:41Speaker 1: Carolina loses a key piece of the secondary. Vakari Swain,
- 4:44Speaker 1: who also handles their punt return duties, gets flagged for targeting.
- 4:48Speaker 1: That's upheld on review. He's done for the day. The
- 4:51Speaker 1: Volunteers take advantage. They drive the field. Mike Matthews takes
- 4:55Speaker 1: it in on an eight-yard touchdown run for the Volunteers
- 4:58Speaker 1: to go up 21-17 at the half. I will tell you,
- 5:01Speaker 1: when I started to write this out from the first half,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I thought, man, what an impressive way to come back.
- 5:07Speaker 1: This is going to be our storyline. Tennessee scored on
- 5:10Speaker 1: three straight possessions to take a lead in the locker room.
- 5:14Speaker 1: It was a championship caliber response. Fortunately, things didn't stay
- 5:20Speaker 1: that way. I'll go on in just a moment, but
- 5:23Speaker 1: I do want to tell you guys about something. I've
- 5:25Speaker 1: told you guys about things that I believed in in
- 5:27Speaker 1: the past, and so I'll tell you about this, and
- 5:29Speaker 1: then we'll move on I know a family that lives
- 5:31Speaker 1: in the state of Tennessee where you guys are, and
- 5:34Speaker 1: they've run into some trouble. You guys have helped with
- 5:36Speaker 1: things in the past when people are kind of down
- 5:38Speaker 1: and hard on their luck. I was hoping you guys
- 5:40Speaker 1: would win because you'd be in a better mood, but
- 5:42Speaker 1: I do believe in this community. I believe in this
- 5:43Speaker 1: fan base. They, not to go into too much detail,
- 5:46Speaker 1: but got in a pretty bad accident. They've got insurance,
- 5:48Speaker 1: but the insurance company's kind of jerking them around. If
- 5:51Speaker 1: that's something you'd be interested in supporting, you can email
- 5:54Speaker 1: me down below for more information. You're more than welcome
- 5:56Speaker 1: to just hit my Venmo and write family on the
- 5:59Speaker 1: tag so I know what it's for. I asked them
- 6:01Speaker 1: about doing a GoFundMe because you guys have done great
- 6:03Speaker 1: with that in the past. They said they didn't want that.
- 6:05Speaker 1: They didn't want their name and info out. And I said,
- 6:08Speaker 1: all right, no worries. I'll see what I can come
- 6:09Speaker 1: up with. So if you give a super thanks or
- 6:12Speaker 1: if you donate to Venmo, anything you give on this video,
- 6:16Speaker 1: we will send along their way. Now on to the
- 6:19Speaker 1: second half. And this is where everything started to turn,
- 6:23Speaker 1: not on the scoreboard, but underneath it. Both teams trade
- 6:27Speaker 1: three and outs to open the third quarter. Tennessee breaks one,
- 6:29Speaker 1: a 48-yard touchdown. The Tennessee sideline is going crazy. And
- 6:33Speaker 1: I thought in that moment, that's it, man. That's what
- 6:35Speaker 1: they needed to do. Flags. Offsetting penalties. The play comes
- 6:40Speaker 1: off the board. That was the second touchdown to come
- 6:43Speaker 1: off the board. Third quarter turns into a rock fight.
- 6:47Speaker 1: There's no points. You've got less than 100 combined yards
- 6:49Speaker 1: between the two teams. in the entire 15-minute period. Sellers
- 6:53Speaker 1: gets banged up. He's clearly in pain on one play.
- 6:56Speaker 1: South Carolina out of field goal range, goes for it
- 6:59Speaker 1: on fourth down. Gillum chases Sellers out of bounds, well
- 7:02Speaker 1: short of the sticks. It's a turnover on downs. Tennessee's
- 7:05Speaker 1: got the ball on their own 43 with a minute
- 7:08Speaker 1: and a half left in the quarter. This is the moment, man.
- 7:11Speaker 1: This was the chance to step on their throat. Staley
- 7:14Speaker 1: makes a big catch to get into scoring range. Tennessee
- 7:17Speaker 1: punches it into the end zone again. Yet there's another flag.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Touchdown number three erased. And instead of a touchdown, up
- 7:26Speaker 1: two scores on the road in the SEC. It's third
- 7:29Speaker 1: and 22. George McIntyre hits Mike Matthews for a screen
- 7:32Speaker 1: for 10 and he hit a field goal to go
- 7:34Speaker 1: up by seven. 1148 to play. And in a vacuum,
- 7:39Speaker 1: I think that's fine. A seven-point road lead in the
- 7:41Speaker 1: fourth quarter. Your defense has been dominant since the first quarter.
- 7:45Speaker 1: I guess you'll take that if I presented it to
- 7:47Speaker 1: you before the game. But it should have been more.
- 7:50Speaker 1: It should have been way more. South Carolina was still breathing.
- 7:54Speaker 1: With under three minutes to go, it was 24-17. That's
- 7:57Speaker 1: when it slipped. South Carolina found the end zone to
- 8:00Speaker 1: tie it at 24. The play by Sellers, hats off, absolutely.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The way that they got... into the end zone there
- 8:11Speaker 1: the way that his effort was what finished that off
- 8:14Speaker 1: hats off man player made a play and then you
- 8:19Speaker 1: have the fumble by McIntyre I thought you maybe could
- 8:23Speaker 1: have made a case that his hand was slightly coming
- 8:26Speaker 1: forward I don't know that it was a full throwing
- 8:27Speaker 1: motion just yet I'm not here to blame officials you
- 8:30Speaker 1: guys had too much come off the board that shouldn't
- 8:33Speaker 1: have it was called that way on the field I
- 8:36Speaker 1: thought it was going to stand the way that it
- 8:38Speaker 1: was called I thought Josh certainly thought it was going forward.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I didn't think it was, but maybe there was a
- 8:44Speaker 1: hint of it starting to progress forward. They get a
- 8:48Speaker 1: chance at the end. They make the field goal, 27-24 walk-off. Tennessee,
- 8:54Speaker 1: a team that reached the end zone more times than
- 8:56Speaker 1: South Carolina did today, loses its second game of the year.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Three quick takeaways for you. The obvious one, there's no
- 9:03Speaker 1: way around it. Tennessee had three touchdowns taken off the
- 9:07Speaker 1: board because of penalties. Now, I'm not here to tell
- 9:10Speaker 1: you that any of those calls were wrong. I'm not
- 9:12Speaker 1: here to blame the officials. An illegal shift is an
- 9:14Speaker 1: illegal shift. Offsetting penalties are offsetting penalties. They threw a
- 9:17Speaker 1: flag on that other team, too. Some of those flags
- 9:19Speaker 1: were earned. But I just want you to think about
- 9:21Speaker 1: the math here for a second. If just one of
- 9:24Speaker 1: those touchdowns stands, Tennessee's up two scores in the fourth quarter,
- 9:28Speaker 1: and the entire final three minutes looks a lot different.
- 9:31Speaker 1: South Carolina is no longer playing to tie. They're playing
- 9:33Speaker 1: to survive. It's different play calls. It's a different clock.
- 9:36Speaker 1: It's a different pressure on a quarterback who had already
- 9:38Speaker 1: been banged up. One touchdown, that's the difference between a
- 9:42Speaker 1: walk-off loss and a game that's over before the final
- 9:45Speaker 1: drive even starts. And here's what makes this so frustrating.
- 9:49Speaker 1: It wasn't just late. The Volunteers had three penalties for
- 9:52Speaker 1: 25 yards before the game was even seven minutes old.
- 9:56Speaker 1: A defensive offsides on the very first South Carolina drive.
- 9:59Speaker 1: A fall start on the opening possession. The illegal shift
- 10:02Speaker 1: that took away the first touchdown. The sloppiness was there
- 10:06Speaker 1: from the very first snap. This Tennessee team plays a
- 10:10Speaker 1: different style than the hypo teams in the past that
- 10:12Speaker 1: you may remember. More two tight end looks. More downhill running.
- 10:16Speaker 1: More grind. Shane Beamer said it himself this week. This
- 10:19Speaker 1: is a team that's winning a little different this year.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And that style is great. It beat Bama. But here's
- 10:27Speaker 1: the thing about winning ugly. It shrinks your margin at times.
- 10:30Speaker 1: When you're throwing it all over the yard and scoring 45,
- 10:32Speaker 1: you can survive a penalty or two. When you're grinding
- 10:35Speaker 1: out nine-minute drives every possession, it does come out a
- 10:40Speaker 1: little differently sometimes. Every flag costs you a meal. Tennessee
- 10:44Speaker 1: didn't lose this game because South Carolina was better today.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Tennessee lost this game because it kept handing points back
- 10:50Speaker 1: to the opponent. Now that is fixable, but it has
- 10:53Speaker 1: to get fixed now. Takeaway number two, closing is a skill.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Here's the part that's probably going to sting if the
- 11:02Speaker 1: six touchdowns on the board that only half counted didn't enough.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I'm not trying to rub it in. You guys know
- 11:07Speaker 1: I like you. But for most of this game, the
- 11:11Speaker 1: Tennessee defense was outstanding. After that opening 14, South Carolina
- 11:16Speaker 1: scored three points until the final minutes of the game.
- 11:19Speaker 1: The goal line stand before the half, the Metcalf interception,
- 11:22Speaker 1: the fourth down stop in the third quarter. Sellers, who
- 11:25Speaker 1: looked unstoppable early, got hit, he got hurt, he was contained.
- 11:30Speaker 1: That's the defense that came into this game ranked among
- 11:33Speaker 1: the best in the country. But defenses with that kind
- 11:36Speaker 1: of reputation don't get judged on the second and third quarters.
- 11:39Speaker 1: They get judged on the last drive. And twice in
- 11:42Speaker 1: the final stretches of this one, South Carolina got just
- 11:45Speaker 1: what it needed. Now that's not all on the defense,
- 11:47Speaker 1: not even close. When you're up seven with 11 minutes left,
- 11:50Speaker 1: the offense has a job too. When your offense has
- 11:52Speaker 1: three touchdowns taken off the board, they certainly deserve fault too.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It's pretty simple. You need to make it a two-score
- 11:58Speaker 1: game or make sure the other team gets the ball
- 12:00Speaker 1: back with no time to do anything with it. Win
- 12:03Speaker 1: the four-minute drill, right? Run the clock, close the door.
- 12:06Speaker 1: It's straightforward. Unfortunately, Tennessee wasn't able to do either. And
- 12:11Speaker 1: some of that, I think, is where this offense is
- 12:13Speaker 1: right now. And George McIntyre having to make his first
- 12:16Speaker 1: real start in a road environment, a hostile SEC road environment.
- 12:21Speaker 1: And when Tennessee needed to throw, like that third and
- 12:24Speaker 1: 22 in the fourth quarter, the options were pretty limited.
- 12:27Speaker 1: You're throwing to a screen to Mike Matthews and hoping
- 12:30Speaker 1: for a field goal. And that's not a knock on McIntyre.
- 12:32Speaker 1: I've been impressed with the way he has played. When
- 12:36Speaker 1: that pressure's coming in, though, and he doesn't have the
- 12:38Speaker 1: experience and the reps to get out of it to
- 12:40Speaker 1: protect the ball, that's hard. But it does tell you something.
- 12:44Speaker 1: When Tennessee gets off schedule, this offense doesn't have a
- 12:47Speaker 1: lot of answers just yet. The run game is the engine.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Bishop is the engine. And when the run game builds
- 12:53Speaker 1: you a lead, somebody has to protect it. This team
- 12:56Speaker 1: has proven that it can punch people in the mouth.
- 12:59Speaker 1: It beat Alabama doing exactly that. What it hasn't proven
- 13:02Speaker 1: yet is that it can finish. Takeaway number three, the
- 13:06Speaker 1: season is not over. It did just get a lot harder, though.
- 13:11Speaker 1: Here's where I think you have to take a deep breath.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Tennessee is 6-2. They're 3-2 in the SEC. If I
- 13:18Speaker 1: would have offered you that before the season started, you
- 13:21Speaker 1: probably would have taken it, especially with a true freshman
- 13:25Speaker 1: starting game one. And if I'd have told you that
- 13:28Speaker 1: in that season, your true freshman starter was going to
- 13:30Speaker 1: go down with an injury and you were going to
- 13:32Speaker 1: have to go to the backup, the guy that didn't
- 13:33Speaker 1: win the job in fall camp and through the spring
- 13:36Speaker 1: and through the summer, you're probably taking six and two.
- 13:38Speaker 1: I know it's a missed opportunity. I know it's a
- 13:40Speaker 1: lost opportunity, but you do have to take a quick breath.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Here's a stat that'll make you want to shut my
- 13:46Speaker 1: video off right now. The two losses, Texas back in
- 13:51Speaker 1: September and South Carolina tonight came by a combined six points.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Two games, three points apiece. This is not a bad team.
- 14:00Speaker 1: This is a good team that hasn't learned how to
- 14:03Speaker 1: win the close ones yet. And in this playoff era,
- 14:06Speaker 1: a two-loss SEC team with a win over Alabama on
- 14:09Speaker 1: its resume is absolutely still alive. But the margin for
- 14:12Speaker 1: error is gone. There's nothing left in the bank. Here's
- 14:17Speaker 1: the good news. The timing of the bye week could
- 14:20Speaker 1: not get better. You're off next Saturday. You have a
- 14:25Speaker 1: week to get healthy, to get McIntyre reps and clean
- 14:29Speaker 1: up whatever is causing all the flags. Because look at
- 14:33Speaker 1: what's waiting on the other side. You've got Kentucky coming
- 14:36Speaker 1: to Knoxville on November 7th. They're ranked 12th in the country.
- 14:40Speaker 1: They're six and one currently losing to Vandy right now.
- 14:43Speaker 1: If you'd have told volunteers fans in August that the
- 14:46Speaker 1: Kentucky game would be one of the biggest games on
- 14:48Speaker 1: the schedule, they might've laughed at you. Nobody's laughing at
- 14:52Speaker 1: that now. Then you've got a road trip to Texas
- 14:55Speaker 1: A & M, a team you can absolutely beat if
- 14:57Speaker 1: you finish on the road. Then you've got LSU, ranked
- 15:01Speaker 1: 18th currently. That'll go up a little tomorrow. They're coming
- 15:04Speaker 1: to Neyland. And then the regular season finale at Vanderbilt.
- 15:07Speaker 1: It is a different kind of gauntlet, but it is
- 15:10Speaker 1: absolutely the kind of gauntlet that Tennessee can go 3-1
- 15:12Speaker 1: or 4-0 in. Every one of those games can go
- 15:16Speaker 1: either way. So the question isn't whether Tennessee is good enough.
- 15:21Speaker 1: We know it's good enough. You saw it against Bama.
- 15:23Speaker 1: You saw the way this team responded to a 14-0
- 15:25Speaker 1: hole tonight. Three straight touchdown drives on the road. The
- 15:29Speaker 1: question is how this team responds to its first real
- 15:31Speaker 1: gut punch. Because there are two kind of teams that
- 15:34Speaker 1: come out of this. There's the team that lets it linger,
- 15:38Speaker 1: that starts pointing fingers at the officials, at the play calls,
- 15:42Speaker 1: at each other. The team that shows up flat against
- 15:44Speaker 1: Kentucky and suddenly you're looking at 6-3. You're talking about
- 15:48Speaker 1: a bowl game in Orlando. And then there's the team
- 15:51Speaker 1: that gets angry, that watches the film of the three
- 15:53Speaker 1: touchdowns that came off the board and decides it's never
- 15:56Speaker 1: happening again. There's a team that takes the bye week
- 16:00Speaker 1: and comes back a heck of a lot sharper. What
- 16:03Speaker 1: I want to know is which Tennessee team is this?
- 16:06Speaker 1: We're going to find out on November 7th. I appreciate
- 16:09Speaker 1: you guys for tuning in. I appreciate you guys for
