Latest / Off The Shelf With Phil and Dave- A Movie Review Podcast / 2014's Draft Day
Transcript
- 0:01Hello and welcome to Off the Shelf with Phil and Dave, the
- 0:06movie talk show where each week one of us takes a movie off our
- 0:08show, presents it to the other for discussion.
- 0:17This week we have coming off of Daves Shelf 2014's Draft Day.
- 0:23Dave, why is this movie on your shelf?
- 0:26I think I procured this film, I wanna say in 2016.
- 0:30I didn't run out to get it. Peak Damon years exactly.
- 0:34Might be the same day I picked up a Great Wall in 4K.
- 0:38This, however, just Blu-ray. Yeah, my intention was simply to
- 0:43expand my sport movie collection along with my Kevin Costner
- 0:50library. He covers both of those bases
- 0:52pretty often, right? Sports and Costner, they worked.
- 0:54Well, yeah, he's done a few. Yeah, that's for sure.
- 0:57However, years later, it's well documented.
- 1:01You certainly know every year I buy MLB The Show.
- 1:06Well, 26 in this instance. I have it and I just draft and I
- 1:11draft. In 252473.
- 1:14I end up barely playing the game.
- 1:16I just keep doing fantasy drafts and if I had more time I would
- 1:19probably do it with hockey and if I still bought Madden but I
- 1:23don't because it's trash, would do it with that as well.
- 1:26Building leagues. Aaron Judge on the Braves.
- 1:29He got Ohtani on the Cubs. Wow, really changing it.
- 1:32Up. I just love it.
- 1:33And we touched on it a little bit during our Inception
- 1:37episode, The Architect. I like to create and build this
- 1:41stuff. So I think subconsciously or
- 1:45unconsciously, I think I was awake for this, but that's why I
- 1:49had to have it on my shelf. Anything related to drafting, I
- 1:52gotta have it. I'm an addict, I am.
- 1:54Let's call it what it is. You know, I gave up a lot of my
- 1:57bad habits, this one. You put all your chips right in
- 2:01there, yeah. I don't think it's going away
- 2:02anytime soon. My wife.
- 2:04Are calling. She Semi.
- 2:05Supports it, and that she supports.
- 2:07You. She hasn't said stop, OK?
- 2:09That's the important thing. She knows.
- 2:10So she's better than Joe already?
- 2:12Already. Oh yeah, my wife.
- 2:14However, she didn't really support me enough to watch this
- 2:16particular film. So she couldn't tell you what
- 2:19it's about. I'll tell you, I know who I
- 2:22could ask to find out what this movie is about.
- 2:24Oht really. Yeah, we know who it isn't.
- 2:26We can't ask your wife. That's clear.
- 2:27Yeah, well, we got Old Faithful right in the background here
- 2:30that. I have a feeling she might be
- 2:31able to describe it better even if she hadn't watched it, but I
- 2:34don't know. You tell me what it says.
- 2:36Well, better than rounders I would.
- 2:37Hope can't be worse. We have here at the NFL Draft
- 2:42General Manager Sonny Weaver has the opportunity to rebuild his
- 2:45team. When he trades for the number
- 2:46one pick, he must decide what he's willing to sacrifice on a
- 2:50life changing day for a few 100 young men with NFL dreams.
- 2:54If I had said that to my wife word for word, she probably
- 2:58would have watched it. A lot of young men.
- 3:01Oht yeah. Hundreds of young men.
- 3:02Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:03Healthy physiques. Certainly more than what you're
- 3:07dealing with. Workout not to Brian Drews
- 3:11extent, but hey, we'll get there.
- 3:13That's right, three bills. Three stacks of high society in
- 3:17the weight room if you look. Further into the IMDb, you'll
- 3:21see Ivan Reitman was the director.
- 3:23He's the guy, you know? Yeah, he's a guy that has made
- 3:27some of the movies I really love.
- 3:28But recently we talked about Dave.
- 3:31Yeah, 9393 and Ghostbusters 85, so.
- 3:35Those are the two big ones. Those are the big ones.
- 3:36He's done a bunch of other ones. I saw, like some comedies and
- 3:39stuff from like the late 80s and early 90s that I kind of
- 3:42recognized. Yeah, for sure.
- 3:44Meatballs. Yeah, exactly Canadian.
- 3:47Oh, I did not know that. Yeah, his son took over the
- 3:50Ghostbusters franchise. Do.
- 3:52OK. Less than stellar results as far
- 3:54as I'm concerned. From what I could see, this
- 3:58movie was his last one. Yeah, for me anyway, kind of
- 4:02fell off the radar. He was obviously really amazing
- 4:05in the 80s. Stuff like Twins and, you know,
- 4:07Ghostbusters. We talked about Meatballs,
- 4:09Stripes. Like this is just like comedy
- 4:11hit after comedy hit after comedy hit.
- 4:13Directed Kindergarten Cop, which is an Arnold movie that I loved
- 4:16when I was younger. I haven't seen it.
- 4:17Bring it off, but bring it off it might be worth it.
- 4:20Stuff like Junior and Father's Day, Six Days and Seven Nights,
- 4:23one of the worst movies ever saw.
- 4:25I did recognize that we talked about that before.
- 4:27Yeah. So Volcano basically from 93
- 4:32Dave really until the end of his career, I never even heard like
- 4:36this is not a movie that paid attention to.
- 4:38He made a movie called Evolution in the early 2000s that was
- 4:40garbage. So I had already kind of written
- 4:42him off by the time this movie came out.
- 4:44And I don't really have a interest in football and didn't
- 4:47really have an interest in Cosner.
- 4:48So. So it's safe to say you had not
- 4:50seen this movie. You know, this is post video
- 4:53store working. So I don't really have any
- 4:55recollection of the wall or seeing the poster or anything
- 4:57like that. So as I mentioned before that
- 5:002011 to 2015 sixteen range. Yeah, you're out West.
- 5:05Yeah. I went deep into the archives, I
- 5:09went deep into my my collection. I didn't see as many of the
- 5:13modern new movies and this wouldn't have made the cut even.
- 5:16If I was. So we know at this point in
- 5:18time, it's on your shelf, correct?
- 5:19By the end of this episode, we'll find out if it gets on
- 5:24there. And I'm curious to find out.
- 5:25I really don't know what you're gonna think about this movie, so
- 5:27I'm excited. For this, I like to be a man of
- 5:29mystery. David, I know I don't like the
- 5:31look I'm getting right now, though it's, you know, I'll be
- 5:35curious to see if you liked it more or less than Volcano,
- 5:37because that's like the bar for you right now.
- 5:40Yeah, I had very high opinion of Volcano.
- 5:42Yeah, watch it again. Yeah, yeah, only sections of
- 5:45volcano in all of. It Let's get into the film,
- 5:48Phil. Let's get in there.
- 5:50It really has that intro to an NFL game vibe right from the get
- 5:55go. You have all the domes empty
- 5:59actually. Yeah, well.
- 6:01It's early. Yeah, it it is early.
- 6:03But first, we're in New York. We're setting up for the draft
- 6:06itself. Yes, So we're setting the scene
- 6:08here. It's gonna take place in New
- 6:10York, but that's it. That's the only real section of
- 6:13New York that we really spend any time in.
- 6:15Because the movie is not specifically about the draft
- 6:21happening in real time, but rather the mechanisms in place
- 6:25that lead to the draft. So right away we've got a
- 6:27ticking. Clock 12 hours and 12.
- 6:29Hours we get Radio City Music Hall which is a beautiful venue.
- 6:32Gorgeous. And we're thrown into the mix
- 6:36with Chris Berman. Chris Berman. 32 teams, 7
- 6:42rounds, 224 players. But it's not long after that
- 6:47that we Mosey on over to Radio City.
- 6:51Frasier Crane. That's right, Seattle.
- 6:53I'm listening. Yes, 4:15 in the morning early.
- 6:58It's my pee time around there. Mark it down, folks.
- 7:04Yeah. We have an introduction of the
- 7:07owner. Sorry, not owner.
- 7:08GM correct myself there in real time.
- 7:11Tom Michaels. Yeah, he's a real guy.
- 7:14Is he a real? Guy, he's good at this movie.
- 7:16I think he is good. Yeah.
- 7:17He's with Chi McBride playing a guy named Walt Gordon.
- 7:21He's from TV. You don't know who he is.
- 7:23OK, Boston Legal, maybe. I don't know one of those.
- 7:25Shows alright, yeah, sure, yeah. Even I barely know him, but he's
- 7:29great. Worth mentioning, he's worth
- 7:30mentioning anything about him. Don't know his name, don't know
- 7:32his credits, don't know anything about him, but we're going to
- 7:34use some time. Here, Well, what you need to
- 7:35know is they have the 1st pick. That's right.
- 7:38We're laying it all out here. This guy named Bo Callahan, Yes,
- 7:42he's projected to go first overall.
- 7:45Yeah, Phenom. They don't need them though.
- 7:48The Seahawks, They would rather get a better future team.
- 7:52I guess so. I don't find any of that to be
- 7:55very well established. Let me ask you this question
- 7:57actually. Would a voiceover have helped
- 7:59you? That's a good question.
- 8:00I don't think the voiceover would have helped specifically.
- 8:02I think a little bit more dialogue in the Seattle camp to
- 8:06explain or at least to establish on some level why they don't
- 8:11want the first pick and they're only aware of that 12 hours
- 8:17before. That'll give you they don't need
- 8:19a quarterback, but they didn't need a quarterback last week,
- 8:23last month, six months. Eight months, Why do you have to
- 8:25get up at 4:00 AM? Yeah, sort this out.
- 8:27Last night in like in a bit of a panic and like, Oh my gosh,
- 8:30we're gonna change our strategy. Poor management.
- 8:32That part feels tacked on. The urgency didn't really make a
- 8:36lot of sense. If you already had a
- 8:37quarterback, you had him all season.
- 8:39Now, I can understand wanting three first round draft picks.
- 8:44You would get the brown seventh round pick this year, the first
- 8:48pick in 2015, sure. And the first pick in 2016.
- 8:53You're really building a team out from that and getting the
- 8:57seventh round pick is still good.
- 8:58Like you're still in the top 10 back.
- 9:00You're going to get a. Depending how strong the the
- 9:03classes this year, I might be using terms you don't quite
- 9:05understand. I get class.
- 9:06I do other podcasts, fantasy football.
- 9:08This is a big time of year for us because of the combine and
- 9:12things like that. Things are happening, buddy,
- 9:14because the draft is happening on April 23rd.
- 9:17I'm a little early. I can never quite get the right
- 9:19time, sure, but we're close enough.
- 9:21Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's closer than usual.
- 9:22Yeah, exactly. But I know we've talked about
- 9:25like this could have been a conversation a week ago, not
- 9:30now. But you got to tell a story that
- 9:33makes sense. You got to tell a story, and
- 9:35this is a story that will be told.
- 9:36That's. Right, so they think Sunny is
- 9:38desperate enough. He's the guy, I guess.
- 9:42Browns enough, said desperate enough.
- 9:44Is the Cleveland Brown wave them Browns now.
- 9:46Are you familiar with Cleveland as a sports city, as a fan base?
- 9:51Cavaliers are very, very Cavalier dominant with Kobe.
- 9:55Stop, stop now. I don't know.
- 9:59I don't want to basketball. But sure, there was a big
- 10:02basketball player somewhere. Yeah, Cleveland, I know, is the
- 10:06home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
- 10:09Drew Carey Show. Hey.
- 10:11Hello, Cleveland. Yep.
- 10:13Hmm. Spinal Tap.
- 10:14Yeah. So, I mean, I'm very familiar
- 10:16with the Cleveland Ways baseball team.
- 10:19No. Guardians.
- 10:20Guardians. OHS Guardians formerly.
- 10:23The Indians went through a name change very popular in sports
- 10:25these days, all the rage. Yes, yes, Major League.
- 10:28That's what I know. Major League.
- 10:30But Browns fans aren't Interesting group.
- 10:32Please inform. And when I realized again,
- 10:36because I hadn't watched this movie in a decade, actually
- 10:38almost exactly, I forgot it was about the Browns.
- 10:41OK. And then immediately realized
- 10:44this is a fantasy fiction movie. Sure, and I had mixed feelings
- 10:49about that. OK.
- 10:50And like Browns would never have a success story.
- 10:54This is impossible. It's not possible.
- 10:57And they have such loyal fans, it's almost like a tribute to
- 11:00them to make them have hope. Yeah.
- 11:03Make him feel good for an hour and 50 minutes.
- 11:06Yeah. Because they have made so many
- 11:08poor decisions in the front office, it's unreal.
- 11:11OK, so it's interesting that they made it about the Browns.
- 11:13It's almost like a joke on itself in my.
- 11:15Interesting. I was just referring to Major
- 11:17League, which is all about the Cleveland Indians.
- 11:19Now, Guardians. That's right, yes.
- 11:21And I wondered if that same principle holds true there.
- 11:23Right, Because maybe I don't know how the baseball team is.
- 11:25But Charlie Sheen, just in his peak, right then he was big.
- 11:29That's right. That is more.
- 11:30Accurate than 2016 Matt Damon for sure.
- 11:34Couple important things early on, just to lay out the rest of
- 11:37it. We're just getting to know who
- 11:37the owners are, who the GM's are, who the players are, who
- 11:42the girlfriends are. We have Jennifer Garner.
- 11:45Yeah, lovely lady. Sure.
- 11:48She just turned 52. Wonderful.
- 11:50She's born in 72, so not at all 52.
- 11:55And we have the green piece of paper, or in your case, yellow.
- 12:00Yes, that's with your colour blindness.
- 12:02Yeah, we know it's something. It's the thing.
- 12:04It's the Oreo cookie. We the tell.
- 12:07Yeah, it really is. So we know that's going to play
- 12:09a role. I think it's pretty stupid, the
- 12:11paper itself, the paper itself as storytelling.
- 12:14Now there's other stuff in the movie that I like quite a bit,
- 12:16but right away this is like you're kind of linchpin to the
- 12:18whole storytelling aspect. It's going to be your through
- 12:21line of the. Plot.
- 12:22It's a little easy. It's almost silly.
- 12:25It's. I would find almost
- 12:27manipulative. The level to which we're the
- 12:30constant shots to it. Yeah.
- 12:32He's like holding on to it. It's passing around.
- 12:34It's sitting in his pocket. It plays such an outsized role
- 12:37in the movie and that the payoff by the end is I found a real let
- 12:43down by the amount of time we spent thinking and looking and
- 12:46talking about this piece of. Paper if it wasn't the colour
- 12:48that stood out so much on the screen.
- 12:50If it was more of a subtle colour like a beige, sure maybe
- 12:52it would have been so bad. Otherwise, I don't really have a
- 12:55problem with it other than I think they're using it to make
- 12:59me feel something later, and I hate to admit it, it kind of
- 13:02succeeds. OK, I think the sentiment makes
- 13:05some sense. Just the level to which it's
- 13:08part of the storytelling I think is unnecessary.
- 13:17It's also fair to say that you love pancakes.
- 13:21I actually don't like. Pancakes.
- 13:22Me neither. I've had pancakes for that was a
- 13:24child. Actually had him in New Zealand.
- 13:26I know if you know, I went there, but before that I had him
- 13:30for like 10-12 years. I like them.
- 13:32I like them just fine. I don't like them.
- 13:33I don't like French toast. Me neither.
- 13:35But this is a movie that has some eating scenes.
- 13:38I wonder how many it takes to. He looked like he was enjoying.
- 13:41His he was right, though, so how I hope he did it in one or two
- 13:45takes. Now, this guy who played Tom
- 13:46Michaels, I don't have the name in front of me, but he has some
- 13:50chops, so I imagine. I think he's great.
- 13:52This movie. Give me the pancakes.
- 13:53I can do it in a couple scenes so I can eat more if you want.
- 13:56No problem. Keep them coming.
- 13:57Coming. Yeah, keep coming.
- 13:58I think it's great in this movie.
- 13:59Costner gets my favorite line in the whole movie.
- 14:01Silence on the phone. He finally just goes, well Jesus
- 14:04Christ, why don't you pretend like you called me?
- 14:08I love that concept when someone calls and like can I put you on
- 14:11hold like you called? Me.
- 14:12What are you talking? About can I put you on hold?
- 14:14You just called me to put me on hold.
- 14:15It doesn't make any sense. So this would make me laugh that
- 14:16there's this dead silence and. Yeah, granted, it is pretty
- 14:19early in Seattle, so maybe they have their coffee.
- 14:22Yeah, sure. Gathering their thoughts, their
- 14:23Starbucks. Home of some good coffee.
- 14:27There you go. If you want to talk about a
- 14:29couple of the players, Phil, these might be faces that you're
- 14:33at least one. That you're.
- 14:34Yeah, for sure, obviously. Monte Mack.
- 14:37Chadwick Boseman, the Black Panther himself.
- 14:40That's right, James Brown, Jackie Robinson.
- 14:43And I thought always a good performer.
- 14:45I really, really thought he was excellent in Black Panther, so.
- 14:48I haven't seen it, but I certainly if you brought any of
- 14:50that passion into any movie like he did in this one, I think if
- 14:55small role. But yeah, I think he pops pretty
- 14:57well and I think all of his emotion scenes I think are
- 15:00really good. He's a highlight, I'd say.
- 15:02Yeah, noteworthy. Sure.
- 15:03Yeah, damn. Good line.
- 15:04Back and I don't know if in 2014 he's the guy, but if you watch
- 15:07him as James Brown or you watch him as Jackie Robinson, you're
- 15:11watching a guy that can clearly handle a movie.
- 15:13And certainly by the time Black Panther comes, you're just get
- 15:17this guy is definitely a. Star and then we also have Terry
- 15:21Crews and his son Jennings. Sure the character and not
- 15:26actually Terry Crew. There's yeah, we have Deon
- 15:28Sanders playing Deon Sanders. We have Rick Bourbon playing.
- 15:31Rick Berman isn't like a lot of guys with Terry Crews is playing
- 15:34Mr. Jennings. Yes, the father of Jennings.
- 15:38You know, yeah, running back star.
- 15:40Yeah, running. Back start running history,
- 15:42yeah, I mean, you have to have at least one yes, that's the
- 15:45rules. Every draft's got 1-2,
- 15:48unfortunately. It's really tough thing.
- 15:51Like obviously I don't live in that world.
- 15:52To be that young with the background that you have and to
- 15:56have that money and that. Or potential for money.
- 15:59Yeah, but you have friends. But it's hard to get out of that
- 16:03life and you're the guy that gets the break.
- 16:06They're going to want to and they drag you down, obviously,
- 16:09totally. But I think it's important here
- 16:11because Jennings is the guy, or made to believe at least his
- 16:17coaches guy. Yes, they're running back.
- 16:21Yeah. Dennis Leary makes the case he
- 16:23runs. Terry Crews says you'll play for
- 16:26anybody. Yeah, but he's a Brown and he'll
- 16:30be a great fit, of course. Yeah, that's a big thing.
- 16:33But the question is, would drafting Jennings make a splash?
- 16:39That's a good question. And you only get drafted once.
- 16:42Yes, that's. So clear they're good.
- 16:44If you're going to make a splash, you got to do something
- 16:47a little. Bigger because we're dealing
- 16:48with right, We're going to get a couple of familiar faces, both
- 16:52from Dave. Yeah, I was so happy playing a
- 16:54character named Molino or Molina.
- 16:58Both. Yeah, it was Molina.
- 17:00Malone and he is the owner of the Cleveland Browns, and he is
- 17:04going on a little jaunt, a walk in the park with our good friend
- 17:08Kevin Costner. Hmm.
- 17:10And he reminds Sunny that people pay to get wet.
- 17:16Yeah. Defensive players don't caused
- 17:20much of a buzz. Sure.
- 17:22So one of the thing, Phillip. But he's running back.
- 17:24Jennings is a running back. Yeah, but now he's talking about
- 17:27Vontae Mack. Oh, he's defence.
- 17:30Sure. Because that's who he wants.
- 17:32Sure. Do you not see what's on the
- 17:33paper? There not yet.
- 17:35Big reveal. And one thing that always
- 17:38bothered me, being somewhat of a football fan is why owners and
- 17:45GM's make certain decisions. Why would you draft this guy?
- 17:49It's common knowledge that for whatever reason, ABC, whatever
- 17:54it may be, he is not the right guy.
- 17:56You don't need that position. He has off field issues, yet
- 18:01they go after them and I'm like, do you have terrible scouts or
- 18:05are they just owners? Look at that.
- 18:07You don't know this, but there's this owner of the Raiders.
- 18:11I think it's the Las Vegas. Yeah.
- 18:13He's got a bad haircut. OK, Davis, it has Like this.
- 18:16Important. Bowl haircut and like this guy
- 18:19is making decisions like obviously.
- 18:21Haircut yeah, exactly make a decision because you got a bad.
- 18:23Haircut and the Raiders have been pretty bad for a while, to
- 18:27the point where they had to. Move a couple times, right?
- 18:30Yeah, you're right. LA to Oakland, maybe even back
- 18:34to LA and now in Vegas. However, what I learned from
- 18:39this movie is it's not necessarily about winning.
- 18:42Hmm. It's simply about selling
- 18:44tickets. Make the splash.
- 18:46And if you look at the Toronto Maple Leafs, yes, they've been
- 18:48pretty good for a while, but they sell out they don't need.
- 18:51To team bad team doesn't matter. It doesn't matter, doesn't.
- 18:54Matter Corporate. Right.
- 18:55So no, playoffs doesn't. Matter.
- 18:56So this kind of made sense to me, although I don't agree with
- 19:01it because I think if you need that defensive guy, he's the
- 19:05piece of the puzzle. Sure, you have drew a
- 19:07quarterback so, but this really crystallized the behind the
- 19:13scenes thought process of some of the owners and GM's is they
- 19:18just want to bring people into the game.
- 19:20They want to make money. Sure, the bottom line, Johnny
- 19:23Manzel classic drafted by the Browns, comes from a rich
- 19:28family. He was a problem.
- 19:29He's always been a problem. Wasn't really that good.
- 19:33He was not the quarterback of the future, but he was super
- 19:38hyped up and they thought, well, the fans are hyped up.
- 19:41We could build a team around. Him, yeah, he'll be in the
- 19:43newspapers and not for good reasons.
- 19:47And then ultimately he ended up in the CFL and yada, yada, yada,
- 19:51we're bastard. That's the mental health issues.
- 19:53I feel bad for him, but it's just all this information they
- 19:55knew and they still know he's the guy.
- 19:57Yeah, he's not the guy. Sure, which is what Seattle
- 20:00seemingly is recognizing with Callahan.
- 20:02Yeah, they're trying to dump them for the three round picks
- 20:05like you're saying. Well, I think no matter who
- 20:07you're picking first overall, Callahan or not, getting three
- 20:10first round picks is always worth.
- 20:12It doesn't matter who it. Is you're getting 2 1/2 Callans?
- 20:14Sure. For the cost of one.
- 20:16Yeah, because that's the deal that he ultimately makes.
- 20:21And with that influence of Melina, we know what happens.
- 20:25We already laid that out, yes. Yeah.
- 20:27Get fleeced. Yeah.
- 20:29Got hosed. Have you ever been fleeced?
- 20:31No. No.
- 20:32Do you fleece? Kirkland.
- 20:33I'm a Kirkland guy, you know, also another Seattle based
- 20:36company. Kirkland.
- 20:37Yeah. Really.
- 20:38Yeah, I drink their coffee. Kirkland.
- 20:40Keurig. Anyways, we have Sunny heading
- 20:43to the office with the news while Leary Dennis from the ref,
- 20:49Yeah. It's and off the shelf
- 20:52eventually. Yeah, that TV show he was on for
- 20:55years. Rescue 911.
- 20:57Yeah, that's no that. Wasn't it William Shatter
- 21:00wasn't. No, no, I think it's on right
- 21:02now. Yeah, Anyway.
- 21:03But yeah, firefighter show. Yeah, exactly.
- 21:05I just know him as an asshole. Which is interesting because I
- 21:08was expecting more of that in this role.
- 21:11He's talking about Jennings. He's great story, big fan.
- 21:15Clearly he needs and we have the split screen.
- 21:18You may have mentioned it earlier.
- 21:20I have not, but it's a noteworthy conversation for us.
- 21:23But directorial. Choice.
- 21:25Yeah. I haven't seen it before.
- 21:28I know it's been done. This isn't new, but I think it
- 21:32fits the movie. I like the use of it.
- 21:34I think it's not used too much. I think it's used appropriately.
- 21:37OK. OK, I disagree.
- 21:40I think it's being kind of too cute by half by having the frame
- 21:47change and characters walking from one frame to another of the
- 21:51split screen. Yeah, I think in this one,
- 21:54Kostner is like shoulders actually in Leroy's shots.
- 21:58I don't miss that. And there's nothing wrong with
- 22:00it. It's just like a lack of
- 22:01subtlety. It's like the post it note.
- 22:04It's just hammering you in with all of this split screen, split
- 22:07screen, split screen. You know a guy like Brian
- 22:09Depalma who will talk about later the year.
- 22:12Use a slit screen. I think effectively where and
- 22:16conveying different bits of information in the right ways.
- 22:20This is, I think, more style than substance.
- 22:23There's no reason why these two things need to happen side by
- 22:26side, especially if they're crossing into one another
- 22:29anyway. Makes you jump jump.
- 22:33It just feels a little too. Much I I I like the commitment
- 22:37to it, though, and if you're gonna do it, do it.
- 22:39I wouldn't want just to do it once.
- 22:40It's gonna have just feels like totally out of whack.
- 22:42But it all came across as just trying to be like style flourish
- 22:45and I felt inappropriate. Shall.
- 22:47We. Show we for a movie that doesn't
- 22:49really need it or have it. And as a director, that doesn't
- 22:51really have it either. Now, Speaking of Leary, I
- 22:54compared this relationship with Brad Pitt and Seymour Hoffman.
- 23:00Oh yeah, OK, for Moneyball, that's dynamic, sure.
- 23:04Action, yeah. We all loved Hoffman's
- 23:07performances and like everything, and that wasn't a
- 23:09big role for. Him.
- 23:10No. But he just delivered it, right?
- 23:13This is obviously different because it's two different.
- 23:16Actors. Different movies, different
- 23:18sports. Yeah.
- 23:18But you expect a certain level of intensity from Dennis Leary?
- 23:23Yes. Did you get that?
- 23:25No, I like that he was angry, but he wasn't angry.
- 23:28Enough. He's like a little tame.
- 23:30I find that the movie kind of sells him a little short, as
- 23:33does Sunny as a character. He's a coach who's trying to get
- 23:37his team together and the idea that Sunny is going to kind of
- 23:41Bigfoot him feels like who would wanna work in that environment.
- 23:47And the idea that he's a hack coach, this is a problem I have
- 23:50in general. Yeah, we're going to talk about
- 23:52professional wrestling just for a second, OK?
- 23:54There's an old thing I remember hearing when I was younger.
- 23:57He can't go out there and say you're the worst, you're a
- 24:00weakling, you're puts, you're a garbage human being and I'm
- 24:03going to beat you in 5 seconds because if you lose, you just
- 24:06lost to a guy that's garbage. And if you win, what does it
- 24:09matter? You just beat a garbage guy.
- 24:11It's like Rocky Balboa. Exactly that movie.
- 24:13Totally. So by sort of setting up Leery
- 24:17as this half assed coach that couldn't really get it done with
- 24:21the Cowboys, they did it all themselves.
- 24:23Didn't need him. He's irrelevant to the equation.
- 24:27Then why does Coster want him to begin with?
- 24:30And why does it matter if he stays or goes if Costner's only
- 24:34mission is to get his team on the field?
- 24:37I just didn't. So like the friction makes
- 24:39sense, yes, but the story around it.
- 24:42Why would you have hired him in the 1st place?
- 24:43Why would you hire him? Why does it matter?
- 24:45Why do you want to keep him? Let him quit or not?
- 24:48Like it just feels like he's a trash coach that doesn't belong
- 24:51here, and yet at the end, we're supposed to feel galvanized that
- 24:56he's going to make some real great moves right away.
- 24:59I'm like I don't really understand why this relationship
- 25:01matters. Yeah, there's a little bit of a
- 25:02lack of commitment to go all the way with some of the characters.
- 25:04It's almost half baked, sure in some ways, but I think the
- 25:08movies met be a little bit light.
- 25:11Yeah, it's almost like the Disney version of draft day.
- 25:13Sure. And some aspects, yeah, they
- 25:15kept the kind of clean and it's probably a lot more sure dirty
- 25:19behind the scenes. Within the context of the movie,
- 25:22it doesn't make sense to me, that's all.
- 25:24But Kevin Costner delivering it, it seems it's fine.
- 25:26I don't know why everything he says.
- 25:28If I could type cast Kevin Costner, this is the role, OK.
- 25:32I would want him to do. Sure.
- 25:34I don't know what it is about. I think he's good in the movie.
- 25:36Yeah. I think it's the character
- 25:38problem. A lot of the characters lack
- 25:39some debt. Yeah, that's that's reality.
- 25:41They're not going too deep like the abyss, and the whole Leary
- 25:45thing climaxes with him coming to this office and burning the
- 25:49draft analysis. Yeah, yeah, don't need anymore.
- 25:53I mean, he's making a scene, Yeah.
- 25:55He's not loving it. Tell you that, But I tell you
- 25:59one thing I would love is to earn reverence.
- 26:01OK. I don't know if I ever will.
- 26:03Doubtful. I don't have to do it.
- 26:04Slow start. Yeah, but Sonny's dad did.
- 26:07Yeah. And that's how he's kind of
- 26:08shuts Larry up with. That sure respect my father who
- 26:11deserves it. Yeah, yeah.
- 26:12It's tough call. The sunny senior Paul, that kind
- 26:18of hangs over this movie. It gets referenced a couple of
- 26:21times. Sure.
- 26:21Yeah, doesn't really spend a lot of time on anything of any real
- 26:25substance. So acknowledging that he's there
- 26:28and kind of having these moments where someone pushed in the
- 26:30wrong way and will say the wrong thing or what have you, and you
- 26:33kind of get a sense. And certainly the introduction
- 26:34of his mother and stuff later. So it's there to add a little
- 26:38bit of drama to Sonny's character, but it's really
- 26:40irrelevant to the movie itself. The relevance and the reverence
- 26:44is irrelevant. What's becoming relevant in 2014
- 26:49is Twitter. True.
- 26:51Yeah, yeah, yeah, you're not. They're on Twitter, That's a
- 26:54thing now? Yeah.
- 26:56And he calls Mac cause he's tweeting.
- 26:58Yeah, everybody knows about it, right?
- 27:00That's the whole idea. He made this one trade at 7:15.
- 27:04Everybody is talking about it. And that's the power of the
- 27:06Internet. But there's a big take away
- 27:08from. The scene.
- 27:09Yeah, this is 30 minutes into the movie and we finally get, I
- 27:12guess, the first interesting bit of information about Bo
- 27:16Callahan. Yeah, the amount of information.
- 27:19If I told you and I granted it's not your world, I get it.
- 27:23But if I told you about the 1976 April 18th game in Mile High
- 27:28Stadium, were you able to determine, Oh yeah, that's the
- 27:32time you sacked him five times and that's the day that, you
- 27:34know, did a 60? Year, sure yeah, returned so
- 27:37forth. Oh yeah, totally.
- 27:37You would remember this. OK, 04 sacks in college OK,
- 27:41that's the game. But the fact he says watch what
- 27:44happens after and leaves it there, that's drama.
- 27:50The issue I have with that is I don't know if Mac would notice
- 27:53as much to what's happening to the play.
- 27:55Sure, from a bird's eye view you might be able to see that, or
- 27:58from a coaching thing, but who knows?
- 28:00I actually have an issue more later with what we're actually
- 28:03talking. About but a four sack game is
- 28:05going to be noteworthy. But if he's that good 7th pick,
- 28:07does that make sense? I don't know, Yeah.
- 28:09OK, it's just because defence isn't flashy.
- 28:11That's fair. That's the problem.
- 28:12The people that are flashy are the quarterbacks, like primarily
- 28:17the big ones, Big Combine. And Brian Drews, he's been the
- 28:21guy for eight seasons. Phillip Little long in the tooth
- 28:24for me, but quarterbacks as we know can play till about 4041 of
- 28:29the good ones. The great One never touched,
- 28:30right? Yeah.
- 28:31Yeah, if you don't have the arm, you don't vote Mac.
- 28:34On the other side of things, you might survive.
- 28:36It's all about the old line. I don't know if you knew that.
- 28:39The offensive line, If you have a good old line, you're good.
- 28:41Sure, Drew doesn't need to have strong legs, but he does.
- 28:44He's been working in the offseason.
- 28:46Last squats. Squats 400 or something. 300
- 28:50something this guy, this is a random thing and it's a TV
- 28:53reference, so you might appreciate it.
- 28:55Smallville. No, no.
- 28:56The trainer OHS telling him about how good a shape that drew
- 29:00is in. He played a football player in
- 29:03the first season of Sports Night, which is written by Aaron
- 29:07Sorkin, who went on to The West Wing, and we've talked.
- 29:09About the. American president and so forth.
- 29:11So that's some connection there. And he talks about how I could
- 29:14beat you up. I bench pressed 3 bills and
- 29:17yadda yadda yadda. And that's in 1999.
- 29:19This movie comes out 2324 years later and he still uses the term
- 29:26three bills and I was like I know I only thing I know from
- 29:29that guy is saying 3 bills in 1999 and I'm right back in 2016
- 29:34thinking he's still known for. That.
- 29:36But it's at this point, after hearing that about Drew and
- 29:40after the conversations he's had with Bo a little bit, his son,
- 29:43he's having doubts. He has the whole water on the
- 29:46face washroom scene. Very common.
- 29:48Hmm. Yeah, You know what I'm talking
- 29:49about. Absolutely.
- 29:50And he has these three guys. Find me something on Callahan.
- 29:55Yeah. There's got to be a weakness.
- 29:57Everybody has one and all they found is a website.
- 30:02Boy, did they. Feels a little dated.
- 30:05Yeah. Cool.
- 30:06Back then to exploit people, Ask Diddy.
- 30:09That's right up his alley. But from there we get a nice
- 30:13little story about some names, even you probably.
- 30:16Know, of course. Where he talks about Joe Montana
- 30:19being too small, Elway threw too hard, too strong, and Peyton
- 30:24Manning couldn't throw deep and they all were thought to have
- 30:29these issues. Hall of Fame quarterbacks.
- 30:32Basically says figure it out, there's something and then let
- 30:36me know if it matters and if we can live with it.
- 30:39That set up, what is it? Why it matters and can we live
- 30:43it with it. That line alone is what the
- 30:46movie should spend more time on. I would watch that movie.
- 30:49Yeah, the movie doesn't really get into that too much in the
- 30:51From Here, but I love those 3 points and how it affects and
- 30:56can affect everything moving forward.
- 30:58It kind of dips its toe in a lot of different pools, and it's
- 31:02almost like the arcade version of what they're trying to do
- 31:05here, make it dramatic, make it accessible to everybody.
- 31:09And I think it succeeds in a lot of ways, but at the expense of
- 31:12maybe some things like that. Yeah, for sure.
- 31:15I didn't feel like it was missing, but I got excited when
- 31:17you're like, oh, this is going to be the thing.
- 31:19But those guys are really just used for comedic relief and
- 31:22whatever else. Let's get Ralph in there.
- 31:34He's the chief of security, for lack of a better term.
- 31:38I don't know what he is listed on.
- 31:39And the payroll officially, You'd have to ask Allie.
- 31:41She's in charge of salary cap handles.
- 31:43All the money. He mentions Bo is pretty
- 31:46vanilla, which is certainly not my favorite flavor of ice cream.
- 31:50No, I like chocolate with a lot of chocolate sauce loaded on
- 31:55there. I prefer the thick stuff, but
- 31:57I'll use Nestle Quickie in a pinch.
- 32:00OK, more accessible? Sure.
- 32:02You ever do the hard shell? You want?
- 32:04No, no, I'm out. Yeah.
- 32:05No, that's stupid things you say, idiot, but there's this
- 32:10possibility that none of his friends and you can relate to
- 32:14this went to his. Birthday party?
- 32:19Yeah, there's a story told about a 21st birthday party.
- 32:21Things got out of hand. It got a little crazy, and the
- 32:25people that weren't there, it turns out, are any of his
- 32:27teammates. I think the best person to
- 32:30really get to the heart of the truth would be Sam Elliott, if
- 32:33you could trust anyone. Exactly.
- 32:34Great storyteller. Yes.
- 32:36And it reminded me of Varsity Blues a little bit.
- 32:39Tell me. More the fact that maybe the
- 32:41police left all the players names off of the report because
- 32:46of their careers and and such. Yeah, they want to label them.
- 32:49They don't want to sort of tarnish their reputations and
- 32:51whatever. Else so Ralph says they took all
- 32:53the names. So I think it helps the movie
- 32:56leave that little bit in limbo where we're not really sure
- 32:59about Beau. Sure, yeah, it's another
- 33:02example, right? Volunteers said.
- 33:04Check out what happens after. And now they're saying he may or
- 33:09may not have any friends. Sam Elliott is great in this
- 33:11scene. How he tears Sunny down.
- 33:14Like no, your theory is probably right.
- 33:17Like this guy is on a fast track to superstardom, but you know he
- 33:20probably doesn't have any friends.
- 33:21No friends, Definitely not. You're right.
- 33:23It doesn't mean real friends. Fake friends.
- 33:26Tons, loads of them. And a lot of those friends are
- 33:28probably Janes. Could use a couple of.
- 33:33Jeans, couple jeans. Because that's the next quick
- 33:36conversation with Larry. Because the Bills or Colin
- 33:39snooping around. Because Larry made a call.
- 33:41Yeah, because you made a phone call.
- 33:43That's right. And he's like, well, we have to
- 33:46use a Jane. Yeah, I got a whole locker full
- 33:48of of Tarzans. That'd be an interesting.
- 33:50Locker room, yeah, sounds all I'm saying. 20 Tarzans in a
- 33:54Jane. Yeah, Awkward, awkward words.
- 33:57We have a moment of Sunny really trying to come to terms with his
- 34:01legacy. We talked about relevance and
- 34:04where his dad kind of fits into the spectrum of reverence and
- 34:07reverence to. And Sunny is wrestling with that
- 34:10and talking to Garner about how we just wanted to have one
- 34:16season with his team on the field.
- 34:17Oh yes, this is a nice. This, I feel like, is the
- 34:21emotional heart of the movie. I don't know that it gets to
- 34:25where it needs to go, but fundamentally he's wrestling
- 34:28with the idea that last year was his dad's season, this is his
- 34:32window and because of the splash he had to make and he's painted
- 34:36into a corner and he's being pushed around by a few
- 34:38different. Elements and making bad
- 34:39decisions. Admittedly so.
- 34:40And fleeced. His, you know, situation?
- 34:44I wondered. He got Kirkland.
- 34:46Yeah. I wondered how you felt about
- 34:48how this scene is projected. And, you know, you're a Costner
- 34:50guy and you're saying you typecast like this is his type
- 34:52of role. I think this is the one moment
- 34:54in the movie where he has some vulnerability or a little bit of
- 34:59heart. Yeah, You connect on any of
- 35:00that? I did.
- 35:01I think if you're going to connect, this is probably the
- 35:04scene even more so than later. I like things that happen later,
- 35:08but with his character specifically, this is as good as
- 35:11it's going to get. I think it could have been
- 35:13better overall. Sure, I want it more.
- 35:15It left me wanting. And I think that story about Joe
- 35:19Montana noticing John Candy in the stands relaxes all his
- 35:24players. The great line about you can't
- 35:28stop a ticking clock, but the great ones find a way to slow it
- 35:32down. And I think this is the closest
- 35:34you can get to romance. In football.
- 35:38Oh, interesting. Yeah.
- 35:39And that's what we love about baseball movies, especially
- 35:42Moneyball for me in particular. And we always critique other
- 35:45sports, but not really being able to get there in movie form.
- 35:49And this like his performance, this is going to be as close as
- 35:53it gets. And it has me, you know the
- 35:56watery like a lie. I think it's fair to say this
- 35:58movie probably doesn't get made without Moneyball.
- 36:00I think this is probably riding that wave.
- 36:02Three years later. Yeah.
- 36:03Emotionality. Sure.
- 36:04Sports. And what the behind the scenes?
- 36:06Stuff is you. Know sports movie that's not
- 36:08about sports. I think there's probably a
- 36:10through line there. And I think that's why this
- 36:12succeeds for me in a lot of ways, because it's not on the
- 36:15field. So let's say, just to put it
- 36:17into a context, you've said before, football is not on your
- 36:20top echelon. I just say it.
- 36:22Does this movie make it more romantic?
- 36:26Or your relationship to football may be more romantic?
- 36:29Or does it achieve what Moneyball does for baseball?
- 36:31Do you leave the feeling the same?
- 36:32Way I like it in a vacuum. Can I say that here?
- 36:36I never really understood the whole vacuum thing.
- 36:37I have a vacuum Dyson, it's pretty good.
- 36:41Good warranty on it, but I only a romantic about football for an
- 36:46hour and 50 minutes. OK.
- 36:49Baseball. It lives outside of Moneyball.
- 36:51I see now the other Yeah. But day after day after day,
- 36:54yeah, You're drafting, you're feeling.
- 36:56It exactly. I'm eating it up.
- 36:58So yeah, OK, well, I don't really like the romance at all
- 37:01between the two characters, but I do see that romance of hmm, I
- 37:07just want a perfect game or I just want a perfect team or, you
- 37:10know, whatever else. Those kind of I.
- 37:11Like the through line of the relationship, OK, They it's not
- 37:15in your face. It's there.
- 37:17It exists, it's grounded, it's natural, it's fluid.
- 37:20I think it's just there to have a girlfriend in the role.
- 37:23I don't think it's necessary. The baby thing is unnecessary to
- 37:25the characters. To me it might be, but it just,
- 37:28it fits to me. I don't know, it just adds
- 37:31another item to his plate. Sure, more complications or
- 37:35whatever. Yeah.
- 37:36To me it's like taking a box. You're like, oh, we got a
- 37:38relationship. No, just make the salary cap
- 37:41woman his girlfriend. OK, great.
- 37:43Done. That might be right, but I think
- 37:45at least it's executed well enough.
- 37:48Where it doesn't have decent. Actor, it doesn't stick out as
- 37:50like, oh, I wish they hadn't done it.
- 37:52It may not be bring as much as you'd like.
- 37:55You'd have to check the tape again.
- 37:57And that's what we're going to do here, Phil.
- 37:59We're going to check the tape. We alluded to it earlier because
- 38:02he needs to find out after this conversation with Gardner.
- 38:04Yeah. Gardner Garner.
- 38:06Yeah. Is both a guy?
- 38:08I had a couple of comments about this.
- 38:10Now you have anything before I dig in?
- 38:13No, not really, no. My curiosity with this scene
- 38:16comes twofold. Right number of folds.
- 38:18The the 1st is Vante asked him to do this hours ago and before
- 38:25he yelled at his team to find out.
- 38:27You're you're the time guy. Now, before all of that, he was
- 38:30advised to do it. Now that wouldn't bother me
- 38:33generally, however tell the story, sure.
- 38:35However, at some point in between that and now, Garner
- 38:41says to him to try and assuage his fears and anxieties.
- 38:46You see things others don't. Yeah, You have a knack, you have
- 38:50an ability. You see what's underneath, you
- 38:52figure it out. Vante figured it out, and this
- 38:55guy only just now decided to look it up.
- 38:57That's not him figuring it out. It's like Rob as hero in
- 39:00Everest. It's not a problem.
- 39:02It's not a problem to the. Movie, I think it's a problem
- 39:04for you. But it's setting up Leery as a
- 39:06shitty coach and showing Costner as the genius behind it all, and
- 39:12he's not really finding it out now.
- 39:15Later when he's doing the deals, there's a little bit of like
- 39:18you're playing the angles. Set it too soon I.
- 39:20Think, but that stuff is not like he's looking at the paper
- 39:23and going oh, that's the guy and here's why.
- 39:26Yeah, he knew he wanted Vonta to begin with, so that part isn't
- 39:29in question. Just feels like why does this
- 39:32scene matter so much? And I like the execution of it.
- 39:36Play what happens next. Play what happens next.
- 39:38I just think this should have happened a while ago.
- 39:41And it's not him discovering something.
- 39:43It's Vonte saying, hey, look at this, you missed it.
- 39:46It's just something you say. Sure, make them feel better.
- 39:50Sure, there's nothing wrong with it.
- 39:52It's when you compound these things, it just doesn't really
- 39:55land. And on 2nd watch, because it's
- 39:58happening in close succession. Now, we talked before, a movie
- 40:00only has to work once. A great movie works.
- 40:03Yeah. A great movie works 100 times.
- 40:06A perfect movie will always work.
- 40:08Yeah. Armageddon.
- 40:08Yeah, yeah. And other movies can just be
- 40:10fine for the 90 or 105 or 135 minutes.
- 40:13And where this movie I think starts to fail is in this
- 40:16rewatch, where it becomes clear the relationships and the
- 40:21murkiness within that becomes a little bit more prominent, like,
- 40:24oh, that's not really his thing any more questions at all.
- 40:29When she says that, I'm like, I don't think he's proven that to
- 40:34me, no, up to this point. But maybe she knows things that
- 40:37we don't. Let's give him the benefit.
- 40:39He knows Vonte is great, and that doesn't bother me because
- 40:42Vonte is great for Sacks, right? Exactly.
- 40:45So he's got his name written. The issue is, all throughout the
- 40:48movie, what do we know? What don't we know about Bo
- 40:50Callahan that no one else has seen?
- 40:53Except Vonte has seen it, and that's the.
- 40:54Issue you're right. Scouts, scouts is the issue.
- 40:57That's the thing. Like you got this entire
- 40:59infrastructure, just make it count drama.
- 41:03That really like from that scene though about checking the tape
- 41:07is the objection. Yes, yes, yes, yes and I think
- 41:11the music manipulates me as well.
- 41:12I don't mean manipulates in a bad way.
- 41:14That's what music does ultimately, and I think little
- 41:17moments like this cover up What you just talked about is I love
- 41:21that emotional impact of giving the ball to a sister.
- 41:24She dies six months later. Yeah, Leary kind of shits on
- 41:28that emotional parade, unfortunately, but that's his
- 41:30character. I get it.
- 41:31It's fine. But it's just a beautiful moment
- 41:34to have in the movie. Totally.
- 41:36I think it's a little undercut by the people in the other scene
- 41:39because it's just, it's all too easy, right?
- 41:41Where it's like, oh, look at this idiot.
- 41:44You can't do that. You can't wait a minute.
- 41:46His mother died. Yes, she did, didn't she?
- 41:47Six months later. It's such an exposition, but
- 41:50watching Vante in that moment gets very effective to bring
- 41:54some humanity to Vonte for sure. And they try to add on to a
- 41:57little bit of the emotionality with the next scene when we're
- 42:00dealing with the $100 bill. Phil, I don't know if this is a
- 42:04real thing. And I'll be honest with you,
- 42:05being a somewhat of a football guy, I don't really care about
- 42:08any of that in this movie. I just entertain me, make it
- 42:11work, and who gives a shit? Yeah, exactly.
- 42:14I'm getting better. See.
- 42:15No, I appreciate. It and this could be something
- 42:17to do. So they've slap on $100 bill in
- 42:19the back of the playbook and they ultimately find out who
- 42:23reads it, who doesn't. I think it's not a bad idea.
- 42:25Totally makes sense. Even if it doesn't happen in
- 42:29reality, it's still a reasonable enough thing.
- 42:31And Bo Callahan is a filthy liar.
- 42:35Twice. Twice.
- 42:37Not only didn't read it and then lied about reading it when he
- 42:41got busted. Yeah, not a good character.
- 42:44That's what it comes down to, yeah.
- 42:45Who did read it though the whole thing?
- 42:48And sent it back. Yeah, well, the one and only
- 42:50Brian drew eight years in. Tom Welling, Superman himself.
- 42:56We need that 100. Bucks yeah he's fine yeah do you
- 42:59like Ralph how he's like ask me this yes ask me that I like how
- 43:03costers character calls it out cause it's.
- 43:05Exactly, totally doing. I actually, I think that's
- 43:07really in the movie. Like the line, Jesus Christ
- 43:10talked to me like you're like, you actually called me.
- 43:13He's like, I'm tired of playing the fucking games.
- 43:15Just talk to me. It's got some pretty good
- 43:17dialogue in this. Pretty good generally speaking.
- 43:19Totally pretty well written, may not be too deep.
- 43:22Some characters, but I get that. However, saying that, I think
- 43:27they want us to get a little aer here when he brings in his mom
- 43:31and his ex-wife. That's the next.
- 43:33That was job phase. Patricia Arquette out of Nowhere
- 43:38and Ellen Burstyn, that we know that is from the Interstellar
- 43:41Wars. Yeah, that too.
- 43:43Yeah, different people, different directions, sure, but
- 43:48she's wonderful. Both in the archives.
- 43:50I don't like her hair. Oh yeah, it's in that 2000.
- 43:52Yeah, I guess it's all the rage. Yeah, we did find.
- 43:55Out from our Big Lebowski episode that you're a cremation
- 43:57guy. Oh, absolutely.
- 43:58You're into that. So you're on board here.
- 44:01Yeah, totally. It feels timings off this.
- 44:03Another one where it just feels tacked on, kind of like that
- 44:05other scene. It wants us to feel things.
- 44:07It's trying to pile on these. It's too many things that he has
- 44:10to deal with. That's basically what he says.
- 44:13Like it's like a smart today. Yeah, it's just like it could be
- 44:16anytime. It's so the urgency is kind of
- 44:19silly to me. So all of this scene feels
- 44:21movie. And there's other stuff in the
- 44:22movie that in this one that I don't feel that like it feels
- 44:24natural. It feels flowing.
- 44:26It makes sense. The dialogue is real.
- 44:28There's enough reality happening, lived in.
- 44:30And the way that the movie takes real players and real
- 44:33characters, real people, and mixes them in with the movie and
- 44:36the setting and the staging. Deon Sanders, baby.
- 44:39So all of those elements add some credulity, and then these
- 44:41scenes come out. Here's your father.
- 44:43His last wish was on what today had to be done.
- 44:46Like it just feels questionable, a little on the nose, a little
- 44:49heavy-handed. And of course, to bring in Alley
- 44:53to the mix. Is a little Amy?
- 44:55Are those Amy? It's not Amy.
- 44:57Come on. You know that.
- 44:58Ellen doesn't know that you're better.
- 45:00Than she's supposed to know. Though, And she does.
- 45:02She's just. Being I I do like that dynamic
- 45:05though with the four of them. OK, just the the ex-wife with
- 45:08her look. Oh, it's her.
- 45:10It's OHK. Yeah.
- 45:11And then the quotations, it's it's.
- 45:12Little gestures with the head, with the hands.
- 45:15Sure. That's why Ellen is amazing.
- 45:18Yeah, the performance is in this movie generally are all solid.
- 45:21Yeah. It's just sort of why this scene
- 45:23is happening. I have an issue with like, you
- 45:26know, does it matter? People die, Phil.
- 45:28I get it. I will die everyday doesn't mean
- 45:31they have to go down the 50 yard line at noon on draft on draft
- 45:34day all the days like luckily if they'd established in some way
- 45:38that was one really special day for your dad or like a.
- 45:42Real. You're talking my language.
- 45:43Give me one line. Something but the randomness of
- 45:46it and the urgency of it just feels tacked on for it just for
- 45:49a movie sake. Ironically, I didn't need a
- 45:51line. I'm fine with it.
- 45:53You choose buddy, choose. Although I have a feeling you
- 45:58might have further issues with this scene because I picked up
- 46:01on it a little bit the second watch and I'm thinking this is
- 46:06going to irk fill. It's the worst thing.
- 46:08OK. It's I hate it more than
- 46:10anything. First time didn't even think of.
- 46:13It I noticed it first. Time like, well, wait a minute.
- 46:18Just give it to us, Phil. This movie wants us to believe
- 46:22that Kevin Costner is so wrapped up in the draft day he couldn't
- 46:25possibly, for a single solitary second, calm down and spend time
- 46:29with his mom. Yeah, and deal with his dad's
- 46:32cremation. Who he does not hate.
- 46:33Has no. Issue with.
- 46:36But he has no time. It's too much.
- 46:38She can't take a second. David, He's too busy.
- 46:42And 30 seconds later, Ali says you look rough.
- 46:47Do you need some fresh air? They go for a walk.
- 46:50Where do they go for a walk, Dave?
- 46:51'S in the vicinity. Of the field, the God damn field
- 46:55that he just said 5 seconds ago. There's no fucking way I've got
- 46:58time to deal with. It listen, you're taking this
- 47:01way out of context. He doesn't want to do that.
- 47:04Uh huh. But this is what?
- 47:06He wants to do that air at the 50 yard line with mom in the
- 47:10ashes. It's not fresh.
- 47:12It's got ash. You don't want Ash over here by
- 47:15the bench with your lady friends.
- 47:19She just has a way with them. Yeah, clearly it's bullshit.
- 47:23It's a good relationship they have.
- 47:24And what bothers me even more than that is how irritated he is
- 47:302 minutes later when the mom is on the field with other people
- 47:35to do the ash. Thing she's sticking it.
- 47:38Yeah, I don't think they have a great relationship in there.
- 47:40I think it's a relationship with a mom issue.
- 47:42Sure. So I don't want to do it because
- 47:45because of the mom where Ali is like, she's been my rock.
- 47:49The fucking world is big, the fresh air is everywhere.
- 47:53It's all have those scenes back-to-back is stupid.
- 47:56Writing one, it's just bad. Right, one word.
- 47:58It's all about the approach. That's how it was.
- 48:01Mom approached it versus how Allie approached it.
- 48:04He needs fresh air, Phil. He needs it.
- 48:07We both know it. We could probably use some.
- 48:10Be honest. And how his mom is saying let's
- 48:14get some fresh air versus how Allie is saying it, Huh?
- 48:17I'm the same place at the same time on Team Alley.
- 48:20Yeah. It's all about Team Joe.
- 48:22You're all about delivery. Either way, he's going outside.
- 48:24How you get him there is about the outside is everywhere else
- 48:28but this one spot. It's just a stupid storytelling
- 48:30point. The point is, Phil is he didn't
- 48:32fire his dad. Mom.
- 48:35Big. Reveal his mom did so that's the
- 48:37problem here. His dad was dying.
- 48:39You don't. It's not like his mom was being
- 48:41some manipulative hand or shrewd, she was saying.
- 48:44He died anyway. Let him die in the field.
- 48:46That's where he's happy. He's unhappy with her at home
- 48:50Problem. Anyways, I got it.
- 49:03Roger Goodell Oh yeah, Commissioner.
- 49:05Yeah. You know who?
- 49:06Lifetime appointment seems that way.
- 49:07He's been there an awful long time.
- 49:10Ray Lewis, Baltimore. Raven not flashy.
- 49:13He exactly. And he was one of the best in
- 49:15his time. Super Bowl with the Ravens, who
- 49:17were formerly the Browns. I did not know this.
- 49:21This is established in the movie had no.
- 49:22Idea. And then the Browns end up
- 49:24coming back anyways. Expansion.
- 49:26It's a funky world. Yeah, But he, Ray Lewis was
- 49:30picked 26th. And I love Melina.
- 49:32He says, well, that's good, too. This, his delivery of that is
- 49:36like, I don't know what to say here, but it's just funny.
- 49:38So that just gives us an idea of the splash, if you will.
- 49:42Maybe he wasn't like these things.
- 49:44Who knows? Right.
- 49:45You don't know, you don't know, you don't know a lot of first
- 49:47round picks like we talked about with Brady, you said 199 or.
- 49:50Something 199. Guy turns out to be the greatest
- 49:52of all time. Ryan Leaf went second, and I
- 49:56forget what year it was, and he was a complete flop, throwing
- 49:59interception after interception. And it was brutal.
- 50:02Yeah, I forget how it all went down, but it was just a bad, bad
- 50:06call. And how do you know?
- 50:07Even like Moneyball? Billy Bean, Yeah, it's another
- 50:09example was the guy. And no, he wasn't.
- 50:12Turns out he was. You don't know.
- 50:14You walk in there, you know, you don't know.
- 50:17I didn't quite get that right. But you know, you know I get.
- 50:19It great little scene. And this is where Ali gives
- 50:25Sunny the green. Yeah, sorry for you the yellow
- 50:28paper. So you know, I slip that in
- 50:31there in case you didn't. Notice that's right.
- 50:34Yeah, there it. Is.
- 50:35Yeah, it's the seventh time that there's been a close up on this
- 50:37piece of paper I get. It and Speaking of pieces of
- 50:41paper you're good friend Kevin Dunn my boy Dave fame he gets a
- 50:47piece of paper with the name on it.
- 50:50Yeah because they're on the clock.
- 50:52They are on the clock. 10 minutes pick up on that.
- 50:55Yeah, good, because it came up a few times.
- 50:58They're all worried because Sunny is in alone and is
- 51:01somewhere he's not even with everybody else.
- 51:03He finally comes. In they had a tradition.
- 51:04They do it all together, but they don't.
- 51:06We'll start it back up again when we start winning again,
- 51:08which tells me you wouldn't start up again because now
- 51:11you're winning. You were doing that tradition
- 51:12when you were losing. Let's stick with the new
- 51:14tradition. With the winning.
- 51:15Tradition. Yeah, that's my one day pick.
- 51:17There it is. This whole movie finally got it.
- 51:18I think it'll still likely stay on the shelf, but we'll see.
- 51:23And essentially they waste three their picks because they take
- 51:27the guy they were going to pick at 7:00.
- 51:30So they pick us first, first overall.
- 51:31That would upset people, Yeah, including Dennis.
- 51:35Layers or quits softly. It's a soft quit.
- 51:39It's a soft quit. What I don't like about this,
- 51:41your buddy Kevin Dunne. No real reaction.
- 51:44I think he sees it. I think he knows.
- 51:47And he gives a thumbs up to Molina, who's got the Callahan
- 51:51jersey. Might want to get some egg on
- 51:54his face if that's the. Case Yeah, yeah, I like egg, but
- 51:58not on the. Face No.
- 51:59Yeah, it's a little silly. It's obviously strange, some
- 52:01credulity, but it's a nice scene.
- 52:02I like those guys anyway, so I was fine with it.
- 52:04And vote is, you know, again, Chadwick, great actor.
- 52:08So all of those scenes I think are really great.
- 52:10Him playing and realizing he's the number one draft pick
- 52:13overall and feeling that surrounded.
- 52:15By family. And stuff.
- 52:16Like I thought that's a really powerful kind of moment.
- 52:18Beautiful. I love the fact that he's not
- 52:19even there. Like he puts his family first.
- 52:22Like we're going to celebrate here, we're going to do all my
- 52:24house. He certainly didn't expect to be
- 52:27picked first or even maybe in the first round because of the
- 52:30way the draft goes and what have.
- 52:32You. But just to make sure we know,
- 52:35we got another shot of the piece of.
- 52:37Paper. Leary reads it.
- 52:38Yeah, Vonte Mack, No matter. What?
- 52:40That's right. If only we had all seen that
- 52:42piece of paper earlier. The movie would have been a lot
- 52:44worse. Yeah, I like it.
- 52:47Sure. It's a nice reveal.
- 52:48Beautiful. Better than the Oreos.
- 52:53Yeah. And he has one last final quiet
- 52:56time with Allie's been the third or fourth time.
- 52:58I don't know if this one is in a closet.
- 53:00I might be in an office now. Could be.
- 53:01I think they gave up the whole secret thing at this point.
- 53:03Yes. And they talk about the pick.
- 53:05The correct path is the tortured one.
- 53:08That makes a lot of sense to me. Our friend Pat can't believe it
- 53:13looks a lot like our friends. Look a lot like Tim Simons.
- 53:17There you go and Bo. Keeps dropping no one wants.
- 53:21Them well, what happens when the most obvious pick there's got to
- 53:25be a defect in this guy and people either don't need a
- 53:29quarterback in the case of the Denver.
- 53:30Broncos and Seattle Seahawks, it turns out.
- 53:33Somehow still trying to think that one through to have
- 53:37something to say there and it gets the.
- 53:41What do you call that the? Hamster wheel.
- 53:43Yeah, that's it. Mine wasn't working there
- 53:45obviously but of maybe we can swing something.
- 53:49Here and now we get Kostner in. This is like your unbreakable
- 53:53moment to me, right? It's like you've played dormant
- 53:56for most of the movie, kind of OneNote Latent, you know, and
- 54:00now it's his time to actually show he's a GM and so that he
- 54:04knows the angles and he can play the whatever.
- 54:08I love this. Sequence in terms of a way to
- 54:10end a movie OK wonderful because I was concerned with you liking
- 54:13this movie over all for the factors that you've brought us
- 54:15sure you're very predictable yeah it's.
- 54:18Just that well reasoned and laid out pretty clearly.
- 54:20But I was hoping that you least you would be able to get
- 54:23something here in the last, you know, 1520 minutes.
- 54:26So I'm happy to hear that. We'll break it down because
- 54:29there's a lot to take in here, and I'll admit, the first time I
- 54:32watched this, I didn't get it. OK, I was probably drunk.
- 54:37Actually, 2016. So I didn't get like all the
- 54:40picks over here and now it's the Jaguars switcharoo.
- 54:43It's pretty clear now. I mean, it would never happen,
- 54:46but I get the that was my question more of like, does
- 54:49that, do those kinds of deals happen in that tight of time
- 54:53frame, 10 minutes to make the deal, Who's signing contracts at
- 54:57this point? How does that?
- 54:58Even I've never really, I've never watched the draft.
- 55:00I know the results of it, but I don't, OK, That's not like you
- 55:04with the Oscars. I don't take an interest that
- 55:05much in it. I don't really know enough about
- 55:08the players, sure. Like you and the Oscars.
- 55:10Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
- 55:12I've been to a movie theatre, but this would be from what I
- 55:15understand, it's completely unrealistic, but again,
- 55:19whatever. Yeah, for the movie purposes
- 55:21worked fine. I just was curious.
- 55:22Casual fan. Totally.
- 55:23I'm fine with it. I thought it was interesting the
- 55:26way it all played out. And if that was the case, I
- 55:28started to think about like the logistics, like, OK, well, who's
- 55:31you told me? I got that pic.
- 55:33OK, I guess you have that pick. Like who's signing anyway?
- 55:36The only thing that's really, actually unrealistic is the
- 55:38travel time that it takes from Molina.
- 55:40Oh yeah, to get there. The Gulfstream.
- 55:43Yeah, yeah, you can't do that. But yeah, look at who.
- 55:46Cares. I really thought it was really
- 55:48well executed. I really enjoyed the sort of
- 55:50culmination of all of this. What did you think of the actor
- 55:52playing Jeff Carson, the Jaguars GM who's got the 6th pick?
- 55:59His own kid. He's the young kid.
- 56:01Yeah, pretty good. I thought his performance was
- 56:03just bang on. You tell me this guy is a young,
- 56:06inexperienced GM. This headlights nails.
- 56:09It really. And I love how Sonny's approach
- 56:13to him is he wants something, of course, but it's respectful.
- 56:17This is good for both of us. And I, you know, you buy it, I
- 56:20buy it. I don't know if it's true.
- 56:21Maybe they can land would have fit perfectly with, I don't
- 56:24know. Tough to say.
- 56:25Yeah, tough to say. But overall, I like the way that
- 56:27it all culminates for a movie that up until that point, I've
- 56:31had some ups and downs with. As we've talked about, you can
- 56:34open strong and it'll carry you. Yes, like Great Wall.
- 56:39Yeah, right. Or if you're opening and fumble,
- 56:44if you fumble at the beginning, it can take a long time to pick
- 56:47up. Yeah, it's the same at the
- 56:48ending, right? A great ending can make up, in
- 56:51my view, for some of the the the questionable stuff beforehand.
- 56:55The movie itself up until this point has been completely fine.
- 56:58Adequate, OK, nice C plus watch. Nothing really special, nothing
- 57:04I would really think about again.
- 57:05I can only hope you. Gotta see plus out of you from
- 57:07something on my shelves. And in this scene comes and
- 57:09you're sort of like, yeah, of course this is where the movie
- 57:11is going. But Costner's got a talent.
- 57:15His relationship with Leary Garners.
- 57:17Involved, like all of that. And the whole back thing was
- 57:19great too. That was really the music.
- 57:21Just the right time. And so I thought for delivering
- 57:24and landing the plane, if you will, I thought it delivered and
- 57:26as a result it left my taste in the mouth to be.
- 57:30Pretty positive, Wonderful. And the Tom Michaels call that's
- 57:34have this out because I think this is where you may have an
- 57:36issue to him wanting Tom Callahan because you gave him
- 57:41away. He didn't want him.
- 57:42You sold him off for draft picks.
- 57:44But now Sonny's like you want Bo Callahan, I want my 3 picks
- 57:47back. Yeah, whatever.
- 57:49But you didn't want Bo Callahan, right?
- 57:51Would be your arguments. Yeah.
- 57:53However, if you recall, they wanted his head.
- 57:57Yes, the blogs are going crazy. And that could get you fired?
- 58:01Sure. The owner.
- 58:02Needs a splash. If your fans are pissed off of
- 58:05you and they stop coming in the games, the first person to go is
- 58:09usually the GM in that situation, maybe the coach.
- 58:11I don't actually, I don't know somebody, somebody higher up.
- 58:14It's not the owner outside of the heads.
- 58:16Yeah. And the fact about the cost has
- 58:20gone down right back where you left off and you come out ahead.
- 58:24So I think that salvages the possible plot hole with why did
- 58:29you not just take Callahan in the 1st place?
- 58:33You get him now and you get him cheaper and you saved your job.
- 58:36Yeah, I didn't really question those kind of.
- 58:38Logistics. I had an issue at the front end
- 58:40but by the time it gets to the bottom I'm like.
- 58:43I've already run a high anyway. Just already accepted it.
- 58:45In this instance, the payoff of it made some sense, even if the
- 58:48explanation behind it didn't. Do you know what a punt returner
- 58:52is though? I just didn't think it was a
- 58:55position. Punt returner to me just sounds
- 58:57so awkward to say. You know, linebacker, offensive
- 59:00lineman, wide receiver, cornerback, like these are all
- 59:05terms. Safety.
- 59:06Safety that all have a kicker, a kind of an allure to them, let's
- 59:12say punt returner. Hey, now you be.
- 59:15Careful sounds like sort of trophies sounds boring.
- 59:19It sounds made-up. It's.
- 59:20Typically a dual role. So if you're a wide receiver,
- 59:22you're also the punt returner. You may not be like the number
- 59:26one wide receiver. You might be like further down
- 59:28the depth chart, if you will. Or you might be a running back
- 59:31or you might be a quarterback. I think Deon Sanders might have
- 59:34been a punt returner. Actually, but I think on his
- 59:37resume it would say. Receiver rather than I would say
- 59:40cornerback, but he did. Something other than punt.
- 59:43Return. Sure, yeah, you'll have your
- 59:45other label. Yeah, on your tops OPG card.
- 59:48Exactly. Probably wouldn't say.
- 59:50Punt return. Maybe that's what I'm talking.
- 59:51About that's what you're talking about, I'm with.
- 59:52You wouldn't understand returner as a position.
- 59:55Well, you know that David Putney is a damn good one.
- 59:58And he takes them just because I'm just want him.
- 1:00:01I just we need them. To different world now, 30
- 1:00:03minutes later, he says. That's bookending that
- 1:00:06conversation in the beginning didn't love that part of it, but
- 1:00:09at the end it mean it gets me where I want to be essentially
- 1:00:11from emotional. Yeah, sounds like now it gets
- 1:00:14you where you need to be. Does the movie stay where it
- 1:00:18needs to be? And the D section, yeah, draft
- 1:00:21day, you know, because I don't care about the realism of it, of
- 1:00:24the draft itself. Change of pace isn't just
- 1:00:27fucking accept the movie exactly it's terms.
- 1:00:30But I think the real reason why it stays on my shelf is nothing
- 1:00:34stood out to me that I didn't like.
- 1:00:37OK, there's certain things I didn't love.
- 1:00:39Sure, but a completely likable movie.
- 1:00:41Yeah, it's just like, nothing pissed me off.
- 1:00:44Like the scenes you're talking about.
- 1:00:45They're fine. They're not the best, but they
- 1:00:47don't stand out as being, Oh my God, that's move past.
- 1:00:51Even Inception has moments like I don't like this moment.
- 1:00:54This doesn't have any of those. It's not always exciting
- 1:00:57necessarily. Those closet scenes with Ali may
- 1:00:59not blow your socks off, but it all makes sense in the movie and
- 1:01:04ultimately it gets me at the end.
- 1:01:07And that's the thing, I have the unbreakable moment.
- 1:01:09Yeah, I thought you might. I did.
- 1:01:11And my eyes get a little watery. Even more so the second time.
- 1:01:14I may have watched it once after I got it in like 2016.
- 1:01:17So it's probably my third and 4th watch and I'm not going to
- 1:01:21go back to it anytime soon. But next draft comes around.
- 1:01:24Is it a yearly could be that's that's that remains to be a
- 1:01:29question. OK, But it solidifies a spot
- 1:01:32because it succeeds in connecting with me emotionally
- 1:01:36and not a lot of movies, as you know, do that.
- 1:01:38So for that, I have a lot of space on my show for those types
- 1:01:40of movies. So it's not going anywhere.
- 1:01:42Such a strange selection of movies if you really ever.
- 1:01:44Did marry out? Yeah.
- 1:01:46I should really publish my library.
- 1:01:47That would really get some eyebrows and some some what.
- 1:01:52How about you though, Phil? Did you like this more than
- 1:01:54Great Wall? That's where I'm gonna put the
- 1:01:56bar for this 100%. OK, Absolutely, I thought.
- 1:01:58For every accident in this movie made sense to me, it all worked
- 1:02:02out. This movie was, as you say,
- 1:02:04completely watchable. I had big issues with that one
- 1:02:07scene with the mom and the on the field, just because it's so
- 1:02:12ridiculously silly to have it so close together logistically.
- 1:02:15Yeah, The other stuff, you know what?
- 1:02:17It's bad storytelling or it's poor writing, but ultimately
- 1:02:20doesn't hurt the movie. Yes, this was such a blatant
- 1:02:23disregard for thematic storytelling that I was put off.
- 1:02:27But it didn't ruin the movie. But yeah, that's good.
- 1:02:29And there wasn't a lot in the movie else that I hated.
- 1:02:32Yeah, there were things I liked or didn't like, sure, yeah.
- 1:02:34But overall, I thought a perfectly serviceable, if you
- 1:02:38will. Well, I.
- 1:02:38Think I mean just Costner he. He's got a charm about him,
- 1:02:42yeah. Really elevates everything
- 1:02:44around him, I think. And a little older too.
- 1:02:45And we've done some younger costers, obviously.
- 1:02:47This is Pete Coster to me, in my opinion right here, 55 years old
- 1:02:53and around there maybe 60 but. Approaching Crocodile Dundee
- 1:02:56levels. Of leather and.
- 1:03:00So I really liked it. It's not gonna go on the shelf,
- 1:03:02it's not, but I do OK. I didn't hate watching it.
- 1:03:05I don't know if I would even recommend it, but I didn't.
- 1:03:08I don't have any issues with the time I spent with it.
- 1:03:10I also think it's a tight 14145 like.
- 1:03:13Yeah, 150 set. The right tone for the movie,
- 1:03:17sure, and nothing overstated is welcome.
- 1:03:18So overall, I thought it was a good, fine movie.
- 1:03:22And because I'm not a football guy, I love Moneyball and
- 1:03:25baseball movies. As we've talked about this, I
- 1:03:28think wants to be Moneyball and I do not think delivers to me on
- 1:03:33that same. Level no, but I I think it helps
- 1:03:34that it wanted to be though to get a little bit more
- 1:03:37emotionality out of it. Sure.
- 1:03:39I think intention is there, it just didn't realize those points
- 1:03:42for Moneyball is like a top ten movie for me.
- 1:03:45Yeah, this is not for me at all. And Moneyball isn't really
- 1:03:48either. I just think it's really
- 1:03:49effective. This is less effective.
- 1:03:50Let's see how effective your tease is for next week and see
- 1:03:55if I can figure it out right on the spot what you're bringing.
- 1:03:57Oh, I assure you, you would not get this.
- 1:04:01I'm going to give you a couple of hints.
- 1:04:02It is timely, just as this is the school year is ending.
- 1:04:07OK? So I'm gonna go all the way back
- 1:04:11to 1995 with Ben Affleck. OK.
- 1:04:15And. Matthew Mcconney.
- 1:04:18Yeah, yeah, yeah. Maybe we'll find out next week.
- 1:04:22Alright, I think I know what it is.
- 1:04:25Me. Well, that's it folks.
