- 0:00SPEAKER_00: The doctrine of purgatory is not something that was invented by the church along the way.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Rather, it is a scriptural,
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: an apostolic idea that has everything to do with the mercy and love of God.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: After death, there is a place, there is a time of purification.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: There's the possibility of being Purified of our sins before we see the face of God.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: And we see this evidenced in the book of Maccabees in the Old Testament
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: where Judas Maccabeus asks people to take up an offering to offer an offering
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: for those who have died so that they might be purified of their sins.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: 1 Corinthians says,
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Every man's work shall be manifest,
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: for the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: If any man's work abide, which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: If any man's work burn, he shall suffer loss, but he himself shall be saved, yet as by fire.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: That's where the church got this sort of language of fire from
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: because it's right there in Corinthians,
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: it says all of our work shall be tried by fire and even if our work perishes,
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: even if we've done something wrong and that burns away, we shall still be saved.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: We shall still see the face of God.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: In the Council of Florence,
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: the Church clarified that if never taught that there is physical fire and purgatory,
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: there's some place where people are getting physically burned or something.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Rather, a teaching has always been that after death,
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: there is this time to prepare ourselves to be ready to meet the Lord.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Why is that?
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Because in the Gospel today,
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Jesus says that This is the will of my Father,
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: I will raise him up on the last day.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: And this is the will of the one who sent me,
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: that I should not lose anything of what he gave me,
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: that I should raise it on the last day.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: And before I will not reject anyone who comes to me.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: So anyone who comes to Christ,
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: even if has that good thief on the cross next to Jesus,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: it was in the very last hour of their life,
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Anyone who comes to Christ will be saved.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Anyone who makes that effort,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: who has that desire, has the possibility of salvation held out to them.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: But what we do on earth also has consequences, right?
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: We do have to be purified of that.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: If we've lived our whole life,
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: abusing people and being terrible,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: hopefully at the end, perhaps someone might have the grace to repent.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: But there's still consequences for those things that they've done.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: And they still need to work those things out.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: And that's What this option of purgatory is,
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: that there's a way that we can do that,
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: that God offers us in his love and mercy the possibility to come to him and
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: yet still work through those things,
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: prepare ourselves,
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: be ready,
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: even if we're not physically alive, because that's what our life on this earth is.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: It's a preparation,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: a preparing for meeting God and for coming to his merciful and loving presence.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: In the East,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: they have the idea that purgatory,
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: this time of purification after death,
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: He's coming face to face with the loving face of Christ.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: When we see the loving face of Christ,
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: his love for us is this burning fire that burns away everything that still remains
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: to be purified before we come totally and perfectly into union with him.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: Another person who I like,
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: I think it was Sister Breach McKenna,
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: she was talking about how she had this,
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: it was almost an imaginative vision Of the fire of purgatory being a fire
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: of remorse.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know if any of you have experienced remorse,
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: but it's extremely painful to experience remorse when you know
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: that you've done something wrong and you really feel it.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: And it really is a suffering, but it's a good suffering.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: It's good that we experience remorse when we've done something wrong.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: And that suffering,
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: the remorse that we feel in going and asking for forgiveness,
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: doing those difficult things, That is like a purifying fire inside of us.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: So if anything, that's what the fire of purgatory is like.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: It's really feeling the things that we've done, you know, seeing clearly.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: It's so easy for us to be,
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: be mean to someone or something or do something,
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: not really thinking about it,
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: then pass on and forget about it and go about our happy way.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: And it's right that we should really feel the things that we've done
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: and we should have a chance to be really sorry for those things.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: And to let go of them and to renounce them and to put them into God's hands.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: That is what purgatory is, if it's anything.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: That's what the fire would be,
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: that spiritual fire of remorse,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: that chance to be purified,
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: to change,
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: to let go of those things,
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: to lay them down,
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: that we might come into the presence of Christ, in his loving presence.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: So today, hopefully in this Eucharist, we can approach God.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: We can come a little bit closer into his loving presence.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: And we can pray for all those who have gone before us
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: who perhaps are still undergoing that purification,
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: who perhaps have not yet fully come into the presence of God.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: And we can share their suffering.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: We can unite ourselves to their remorse.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: We can join in their sorrow.
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: We can walk with them in a sense so that we all might come together.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Hopefully one day we pray into the loving,
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: purifying presence of the face of our Lord Jesus Christ.
