- 0:45Welcome back to the boundary Corner podcast.
- 0:49I am Curtis Wilson. I'm Brian seagull.
- 0:52How you doing tonight, buddy? Buddy, I'm tired.
- 0:55How are you? I'm right there with you had a
- 1:02long day, long day of work, long day of running a few errands
- 1:07after work, 540 wake up, calls or no fun, full week of work to
- 1:14so the Aldi on Thursday, wasn't there gotta work tomorrow.
- 1:19You know, say what you want to say.
- 1:22Yeah, I believe this when you have a Friday off.
- 1:27Thursday's can become the most energized day in the world.
- 1:32Right, that's right, man. I'm looking to Friday and it's
- 1:35great. It's there tomorrow.
- 1:37But when you have it off, it's just a sense of like I don't
- 1:41have to do anything responsible tomorrow.
- 1:47Yes, I have to wait my kids. I've got to get the other two
- 1:51virtual school, but other than that, I don't have anything
- 1:54really responsible. So I put my dad had on for a
- 1:57little bit and then just kind of Coach through the day, exactly.
- 2:19My job sometimes is a slow flow for an extended period and then
- 2:26a lot of hyperactivity for several hours to a couple days.
- 2:30So it was one of those you know four to six hours of
- 2:34hyperactivity today. So I was I was banging out
- 2:39queries left and right but I It done and you know, the bigwigs
- 2:45are happy. So that's all that matters.
- 2:47That's all the matters, right? Hey, how about this though?
- 2:50Let's just look, let's just look holistically at things.
- 2:55Next week's essentially, a two to two and a half day, work week
- 2:59with lots of football. Lots of good food, obviously,
- 3:04not as big, a family gatherings as normal and things like that,
- 3:10but still going to be a great weekend, then everyone's going
- 3:13to eat well and watch a lot of football.
- 3:15So there's nothing wrong with that, not at all, and it's going
- 3:20to be a short work week. And I'd say what Thirty to forty
- 3:26percent of people probably have Friday off to.
- 3:29That's it. 30 40 %. Yeah, if you're not in the
- 3:31retail world, you know, some corporations will you know, have
- 3:36certain jobs going on, but majority of people will have
- 3:39also. Yeah.
- 3:41Hey, Brian, let's just get to it, man.
- 3:43You know, Hokies coming after rough loss to Miami by Point
- 3:49have to travel up to the land of no change.
- 3:52That would be Heinz Field because Heinz Field, this year
- 3:55will Like on field 2 years ago, no interview Stadium morning
- 4:00there. So luckily the players have
- 4:04always prep for that, which is a good thing, but let's get to
- 4:09know the enemy Hokies go up. Again North, the pit, the forum
- 4:15for Pitt Panthers Ryan. Usually we've started on offense
- 4:19a lot but we're going to script because pit is a different
- 4:22animal. We're going to start with the
- 4:24defense. This is easily the best
- 4:29statistical defense. The Hokies have played all year
- 4:32and this is a pit team that's missing.
- 4:34Defensive tackle, Jalen Twyman who opted out very early in the
- 4:38process that he want to play this year.
- 4:40He's obviously going to be a first or second-round pick and
- 4:44then you get safety Paris, Ford who just a couple weeks ago,
- 4:47opted out for it. Again, one of those guys earlier
- 4:53this year. Me and you question?
- 4:54Why did he come back? He could have gotten drafted in
- 4:57without a doubt. The first three or four rounds
- 4:59came back. Had played very well, definitely
- 5:03improved his draft stock even higher.
- 5:05But, you know, Brian. Let's just look at the numbers
- 5:08real quick before you get into what we're looking at from them.
- 5:12They are the a total defense in the country they only give up
- 5:17296 yards. A game only 23 points per game
- 5:22again the ferry good number in rushing defense.
- 5:25Why As Brian, they are number two in the country.
- 5:28So, it's a strength on strength. Again, they are only giving up
- 5:3178 yards per game. So Braun, what are we seeing
- 5:36from this type defense? So, the big thing it's kind of
- 5:42the, almost a dinosaur. We really talk about it, man.
- 5:46They run a true 4-3 defense. And, you know, most of the time
- 5:51when we talk about four man, front defenses in college
- 5:54football, these days, it's either some version of the 425
- 5:59or kind of a multiple multiple front situation, but these guys
- 6:04are a true for 3, that means they unless it's like long down.
- 6:09So they usually have three linebackers on the field, but
- 6:13when we talk about their strength, the strength is
- 6:15definitely their front seven and especially their deal on.
- 6:18Even without you Twyman in there, they still got some studs
- 6:23up front and their safety play is very good and I know they're
- 6:27missing forward now but their safety play is very good as
- 6:30well. They're really only weak area of
- 6:33this team is probably their cornerbacks and that's not
- 6:36necessarily a weakness. It's just not a strength.
- 6:39Yeah, When you mentioned those defensive that defensive line,
- 6:43and I tell you what, they're leaving the country with 38, sat
- 6:47total on the year. They're also leading the country
- 6:52in tackles for loss, they get almost 12 per game, which is
- 6:57pretty wild and those two defensive lineman.
- 7:00The first thing I noticed was the 757 product, Patrick Jones.
- 7:05Yep, we did offer him, we he was offered so if I want to get up
- 7:10there and scream, we don't offer the kids, he was offered 65, 260
- 7:16lbs so far this year, 34, tackles 11 tackles for loss,
- 7:20eight sacks. Hey bro, don't you wish?
- 7:21We had our scheme? We're trying to run this year
- 7:23when we were recruiting this kid a lot easier.
- 7:25Well, uh a lot easier to sell. Ya other guy defensive end
- 7:33against 65 to 70 Richard, Weaver twenty seven, tackles 11 and a
- 7:39half for the lost, five and a half sacks.
- 7:42So you mentioned that their front seven is good even without
- 7:46climate and they would be borderline their lead anyway.
- 7:49They might be the best defensive country of Twyman had come back.
- 7:53So what are you seeing not only from Jones and Weaver?
- 7:56But the other pieces of this line, May the big thing is that
- 8:00both of those defensive ends Weaver in June's they get after
- 8:05the passer, you know, they're pretty balanced as well.
- 8:11They're good against the run but When they get into those third
- 8:15third and long situations where they can pin their ears back,
- 8:17they are damn scary and being defensive ends.
- 8:22You see a lot of downs where they're playing meet at the
- 8:25quarterback where they're both kind of just bearing down on the
- 8:30quarterback after they beat the tackle.
- 8:32So, our tackles are going to need to have a pretty damn good
- 8:34game to at least slow these guys down because there's no way that
- 8:37they're going to consistently, stop them the whole game, but if
- 8:40we could just slow them down where they're not able to take
- 8:43over. I think we'll be okay there
- 8:46Weaver, he has great power with this pass rush and then Jones is
- 8:50kind of more of the speed Edge guy.
- 8:52That has a couple really good pass rush moves that can throw
- 8:56guys off balance. So again across the board,
- 9:00they're good. But those are the two guys to
- 9:01keep an eye on because they make plays in The Run and as well in
- 9:05the in the passing game getting sacks.
- 9:09Absolutely. Well like you said, they're
- 9:11really there is no weakness on this team even the corners who,
- 9:15you know, there aren't they aren't great but they aren't
- 9:18bad. You know.
- 9:20But we look at the other pieces of this defense.
- 9:22I see really, you know, sort of pronouncing his name right?
- 9:26Sir, visha, Denis, Denis the sophomore 61 230 linebacker out
- 9:31of Syracuse, with 51. Tackles Force acts, 13, half
- 9:37tackles for loss. Jesus Does Body that we're
- 9:40looking at get below double-digit tackles for loss
- 9:43that scares the hell out of me you talk about the safety play.
- 9:47Yeah they don't have a four and four before he opted out, forty
- 9:51five tackles three-and-a-half tackles for loss three
- 9:54interceptions. That's why I said, he solidified
- 9:56he played it. He said, I think I'm good.
- 9:58I think I've proven that I am going to be once they were
- 10:01statistically, out of any chance of playing for a ACC
- 10:06Championship, he's like, dude. Salute putting played well yeah.
- 10:12Well so it was like and I mean he wasn't just out there you
- 10:15know by this time he was out there bawling his ass off until
- 10:21it did make sense for him to risk another injury.
- 10:25Exactly to play out the season and we talked about Ford in our
- 10:29in our you know leading up to the season reviewing all the
- 10:32teams. He was one of those elite
- 10:33players. Well, the other safety is just
- 10:35as believe. You look at Damar Hamlin, the
- 10:38Redshirt You're 61 195. He was also a top 24/7 player
- 10:42back in twenty sixteen forty six, tackles three-and-a-half
- 10:46tackles for loss for him, and then just kind of looking at, we
- 10:50look specifically at The Upfront numbers, but just more overall
- 10:53information. They're really good at stopping
- 10:55on third down, which has been a real issue.
- 10:58For the Hokies on offense, they're only allowing 35 and a
- 11:01half percent conversion rates, they've also forced 14
- 11:05turnovers, which is top 15 in the country.
- 11:08I mean Brian you know what are you seeing now that we've kind
- 11:14of moved back to the the second and third levels?
- 11:16What are you seeing from these guys?
- 11:18So Denise is a play maker at linebacker.
- 11:22He runs well sideline to sideline in Pursuit he gets sent
- 11:29on blitzes a lot on third down and long situations really
- 11:33putting pressure on the quarterback and he's just a guy
- 11:36that in the Run game when things kind of Get bumped to the
- 11:40outside. He's there, making the play
- 11:42playing underneath the tackles playing outside the tackles and
- 11:46making some of those tackles for loss.
- 11:47So he's really a guy that kind of does it all.
- 11:52And he really is an asset to that front and let's that those
- 11:56guys on the defensive line, you know, pin their ears back more,
- 12:00because he cleans up, you know, any of the mess that is that
- 12:03it's kind of left from those guys getting up field and then
- 12:06let's take a look. You know, you mentioned Damar.
- 12:08Hamlin, man, I mean, forward got a lot of the publicity, a lot of
- 12:12the lot of the big talk, but I mean, Hamlin is also a guy
- 12:16that's been playing at a very high level for several years
- 12:20now, now he's really great and run support from the safety
- 12:24position. So he gets good good fits there
- 12:28and and cleans up the messes there when things get sent out
- 12:31to the spill area and he occasionally gets exploited in
- 12:35coverage but when he's there to make the play he breaks up a lot
- 12:39of passes occasion will get an interception.
- 12:42So you know, he's a guy that we got to definitely account for
- 12:46both in the Run game and when we're throwing the football, So,
- 12:50you know, there's really no weakness to this defense.
- 12:53There's only areas that aren't great.
- 12:57Yeah. And you talk about being there,
- 13:00the two intercepts new mentioning.
- 13:01He's also got five pass breakups for safety.
- 13:03That's a pretty good number. So, you know, Brian, we're
- 13:07looking at every level best defense.
- 13:09We've placed we're coming off, probably.
- 13:15I don't know, three of the four last week's on offense.
- 13:17We just it hasn't clicked Lewis bit about the dead click.
- 13:21Now you're going against this really good offense that I'm
- 13:25shooting this defense. It's going to stack the Box
- 13:27because going to take our strength away.
- 13:29I mean this is not going to be an easy task in as a person that
- 13:35I'm kind of going on, emotional swingle, you know, give me some
- 13:38things. We've got to do so I can take
- 13:40the emotion out and look more at it.
- 13:44You know analytically? Yeah.
- 13:46I mean the big thing is going to be the intermediate passing
- 13:48game. It's been something that we've
- 13:51talked about the last few weeks. It's going to need to play a big
- 13:54role again. But what's also going to need to
- 13:57play a big role is throwing the ball.
- 13:59Some outside, the numbers we need to take advantage of the
- 14:03fact that if there is an area that isn't exceptional in his
- 14:09defense it's cornerback and if we're going to make some plays
- 14:13that's where we're going. You to take advantage of them.
- 14:14So need to make good connections with receivers to outside the
- 14:19numbers, try to stretch the field on them, some but also
- 14:25give guys the ball in space and let them get off the sidelines
- 14:28as well. Make them have to tackle.
- 14:31And as far as the running game, man, I'd like to see us.
- 14:34Try to run some up the middle, but also get to the edge with
- 14:39them playing, you know, traditional 43.
- 14:44Yes, they've got guys that can at the linebacker position that
- 14:47shed blocks better than like a nickel or Whip or or whatever.
- 14:52That type of position is for only given defense but they're
- 14:55not quite as quick if we can get our guys to the edge and kind of
- 14:58get up that outside alley. We might have some chances to
- 15:01exploit them in the running game as well.
- 15:03So Brian when you say that are you thinking these are these are
- 15:06the three thoughts I have. When I when you say what you
- 15:09just said there. And we've seen it a couple times
- 15:13jet sweeps. Yep, getting to the edge, the
- 15:16little toss play that we run where essentially the running
- 15:20back in hand and take three or four steps.
- 15:22And then he pitches the ball where it's essentially.
- 15:25They've cleared the outside tackle or enough on his behind.
- 15:29And I'd like that play to be an option play.
- 15:32I was going to say the speed option, speed options, forcing
- 15:39those linebackers to get to in enforcing the safety.
- 15:41Become a, if you're running that pitch play.
- 15:44I want Hendon have the option to hold that ball and get up field
- 15:47as well. So I don't want it to be an
- 15:49automatic pitch and yeah, speed option would be great.
- 15:54Quarterback lead outside would be something we would run on
- 15:57occasion to mix things up. Huh, on occasion, not, that's
- 16:03why I qualified it. I qualified it.
- 16:08Yeah, we don't need to run our quarterback every play.
- 16:11Especially if you know Herbert's looking to take more like 60% of
- 16:17the running back snaps this week.
- 16:19Versus, you know what, 25 percent last week if he can get
- 16:22up to 60% with the guy that you really trust, especially you
- 16:28know, with Holston coming along some in last game as well, you
- 16:31got to feel good about your situation at running back.
- 16:36Absolutely Brian. Now as good, as their defense,
- 16:41Is Elite status, you know, defense, this sheet here, their
- 16:46offenses, it's just terrible. I mean, if there's no other ways
- 16:51to say about it, there's a lot of things we can look at the
- 16:54first couple things I'm going to look at Brian.
- 16:57They're only gaining 357 yards per game, that's just not good
- 17:04at all and where it's really bad is their average in 104.
- 17:11On the ground and 253 in the air, which with what how he
- 17:16played against the run. This is good.
- 17:19This is similar to be see where BC got like 130 yards, but it's
- 17:22like, that's okay. We were giving up a ton of
- 17:27yards. Yeah, those two positions.
- 17:32One is led by Kenny Pickett so far this season in six games,
- 17:37five, fifteen hundred ninety, nine yards, eight and eight
- 17:40touchdowns. Interceptions again, six, not
- 17:43eight games, he did Miss to due to injury sixty-two percent
- 17:47completion. We've seen Kenny Pickett play in
- 17:49person. Exactly one year to the day,
- 17:52this game will be played, which is pretty funny.
- 17:55Yeah. And then we've got the 58 175
- 17:58running back out of Fort Lauderdale Vincent Davis, only
- 18:01three more than 13 yards. Rushing about three of carry
- 18:05four touchdowns also pretty good out of the backfield with 104
- 18:09receiving yards on seven 19 reception.
- 18:12So Brian, what are you seeing out of picket and Davis
- 18:15primarily? So let's let's start with pick
- 18:20it. Obviously, you know, we've
- 18:23talked a lot about Kenny picket on this program between, you
- 18:28know, some of the stuff we talked about the beginning of
- 18:30the Season, some of the, our pics throughout the year.
- 18:35You know, some of the stuff we look at other tape as we have
- 18:40been scouting other Since we've talked about Kenny Pickett, he's
- 18:44a steady quarterback, he's not a lie, he steady.
- 18:48He's a good quarterback, but nothing more and because of how
- 18:54much they struggle to run the ball.
- 18:57That's a problem for them. They live and die.
- 19:01By the day that Kenny pick. It has true.
- 19:05And you know, he had a for his career, he was kind of he was
- 19:08good at the gate but he's only took him.
- 19:11Taking kind of baby steps each year since then he's not taking
- 19:15those those giant leaps in terms of his his growth at the
- 19:19position but he will make plays with his arm and with his leg.
- 19:25But he also will make throws that kill drives and then just
- 19:30kind of a guy that hasn't been good enough with the other
- 19:33offensive deficiencies, they have to really take them from a
- 19:37adequate offense to an offense that can really make them Em,
- 19:42you know, compete for an ACC Championship game.
- 19:45So, I mean, that that's what you get with Kenny Pickett.
- 19:47Vincent Davis, I like what he does he's kind of like a You
- 19:54kind of that the traditional scatback he's like a one cut
- 19:58really short choppy steps. Think like, Darren Sproles type
- 20:03running back, not not have obviously that Elite level of a
- 20:07player but he's got that kind of build in that kind of game
- 20:10smaller and Shifty one cut, good change of Direction and gets
- 20:16through holes. Pretty good when they're there
- 20:18but he does need the holes to be there to make a play when it's
- 20:22kind of like A lot of garbage in the middle, he'll get kind of
- 20:26gummed up, get thrown for some tackles for loss there and he's
- 20:31good out of the backfield. He can kind of Shifty in space
- 20:34so that that's that that's where he is.
- 20:38He's the biggest asset for them is when they can get it, the
- 20:40ball in space or get the ball in the running game.
- 20:42When there's a big hole there, but they don't do a very good
- 20:44job of making a lot of big holes.
- 20:47This is not an offensive line that does it does.
- 20:53They're probably average to above average in past Pro but
- 20:56definitely below average in their run game.
- 20:59They fit up well but they just don't they don't move guys off
- 21:02the ball and this style of offense that they run.
- 21:06You kind of need to have the holes there to make the running
- 21:10game hum. You're right man and you talk
- 21:13about the offensive line and I'm glad you mentioned them because
- 21:17they're they're about middle of the pack.
- 21:18Giving up sacks about to a game. So they've given up 16 sack so
- 21:22far this year, but they are Dreadful you do about the
- 21:25tackles for loss. You talk about, not making a
- 21:27running game, they are 126th in the country, Ron in tackles for
- 21:34loss, allowed not all on the line.
- 21:38But when you see that number, you know, that that is either a
- 21:42average to below average offensive line at run, blocking
- 21:47their given up about a the game and they're losing 30 yards, a
- 21:52game. Mon this?
- 21:54Yeah, that's me. You talk about having what
- 21:58average game is what anywhere between what seven and ten
- 22:02drives depending on Flow? Yeah, basically you're saying to
- 22:08yourself. We're starting first and 13
- 22:11which this offense that's really tough to come over now, couple
- 22:16other things. Brian.
- 22:17For I hit to really to me these guys are just their keys.
- 22:23On offense. Not converting.
- 22:26Great at third down 35.8, but believe it or not.
- 22:29They have the 34th most first downs.
- 22:32So when I see that, I think well, when they're getting solid
- 22:36yards on first and second, usually they're getting the
- 22:42first down. You get on the third there, in a
- 22:45whole heap of trouble, they've turned the ball over nine times
- 22:49and I think without question, and we've said it a couple times
- 22:54if they had a decent offense, they'd be 6 into or 71.
- 22:59Yeah, if we had their defense, I don't think we had lost a game
- 23:06this year. I think, vice versa.
- 23:07If they had our office I don't think they would have lost a
- 23:09game so far this year. Maybe Notre Dame but those two
- 23:14key wide receivers run. The first one is the true
- 23:18freshman wide receiver out of Frederick.
- 23:19Maryland the 61 170 top 24/7 player, Jordan Addison in his
- 23:25true freshman season already lighting up.
- 23:28The stat sheet 611 receiving yards on 52.
- 23:34Receptions averaging about 12 perception, three touchdowns a
- 23:39long of 75 also they get them involved a little bit in the Run
- 23:43game. He has seven rushes for 55
- 23:45yards. The other more experienced guy
- 23:48is shocky, Jaques newest? Very interesting name, the
- 23:54junior out of Florida. Six foot 185 273 yards on 23
- 24:00receptions. No touchdowns does have a long
- 24:04of 68 and again, he's averaging about 12.
- 24:07What are you seeing from these two, guys?
- 24:09Brian of why essentially to make this team go, they've got to go.
- 24:15So let's start with Jordan. Addison and he's the reason that
- 24:18I think Kenny Pickett is taking a small step forward this year.
- 24:22He is a very versatile receiver, he's kind of your your guy that
- 24:27can work underneath. The defense has catches a lot of
- 24:31the quick hitting Route. Some of those out some of those
- 24:34screens you can do a little bit with them, he's taking, you
- 24:38know, one, one catch for I think a 75 yard touchdown but he's
- 24:41also the guy that's gonna get a move the sticks for you with
- 24:44that stuff underneath and get some of those dirty yards, any
- 24:49runs really good routes for a young receiver.
- 24:51So it's it's something we need to take into account their that
- 24:54he's gonna be able to get himself open even against good
- 24:58coverage. And he's also the guy that they
- 25:00used sometimes in those jet sweeps or those times when
- 25:04they're going to give the ball out of the backfield to a
- 25:06receiver. So he really kind of does it all
- 25:08for them. He is the, the player that's
- 25:11made this offense, go from a very plotting and methodical
- 25:15offense last year to at least one that when things are
- 25:19connecting, it looks pretty good.
- 25:23Chucky jacques-louis. He's the guy that's going to be
- 25:26the stick mover. He's going to get those outside
- 25:29the numbers catches please bigger than its frame.
- 25:34I know you said six foot what 180 185 plays bigger than that
- 25:40they'll throw him on the on a fade and post.
- 25:42But you know, a lot of hitch has a lot of, you know, 10, 12 yard
- 25:46outs. He's a guy that's going to kind
- 25:49of move the sticks for them and get them this hard first downs
- 25:52when they get When they're in those third and long situations,
- 25:55where his Addison's, the guy that gets them in those, you
- 25:58know, shorter down and distance areas on first and second, when
- 26:01they can kind of go against the average and throw on first down.
- 26:05So both of them are going to be key to get their offense moving
- 26:10and hopefully we can do something to slow those guys
- 26:12down. Alright again run, I'll kind of
- 26:17reiterate it again. If they again have a decent
- 26:20offense. Sky's the limit swarm but they
- 26:24don't quote. If they could just run the ball
- 26:27where you could key on those two guys.
- 26:29I think you can say a little bit more about them but they just
- 26:32consistently cannot run the ball where you really can focus on
- 26:37kind of controlling what would Addison and Jacques we do.
- 26:40And also you know occasionally Kenny pick it makes a bad throw
- 26:45these receivers as good as they are.
- 26:47Have had a lot of drops this year so you know a lot of times
- 26:51they end up The ball a little bit and then kind of shooting
- 26:54themselves in the foot. So hopefully we can make sure we
- 26:57don't break and give up the big one so we can force them to kind
- 27:02of beat themselves a little bit. So how do we beat them?
- 27:07I mean, obviously our defense is not World beaters right now and
- 27:10it's one of those weeks where it's like we're not going
- 27:12against an offense with a ton of weapons and showing a lot.
- 27:16What can we do to be? I think we're going to need to
- 27:20get after Kenny Pickett we need to make him.
- 27:22Uncomfortable. We need to make him throw before
- 27:24he's ready. We need to sack him and hit him.
- 27:27Whether that's bringing for and getting guys like bar, no and
- 27:31Justice Reed meeting in the backfield whether that's
- 27:36bringing one or two extra guys in the zone Blitz or whether
- 27:39it's going kind of man free and you know bringing guys from from
- 27:43areas that they're not expecting, we need to keep the
- 27:47the receivers in front of us when they catch it, we need to
- 27:52make sure We're where we need to be.
- 27:53And, as always tackle, tackle tackle, especially, Jordan,
- 28:02Addison. So just, the tackle, tackle
- 28:07tackles becoming the weekly number three, trying to beat a
- 28:12dead horse here, but I mean, as much as we struggled with it off
- 28:16and on this season, I'm going to keep emphasizing it until I see
- 28:19several games in a row where it's not an issue.
- 28:23It's true man. One other point before we get
- 28:26over to the pivotal players points Personnel because y'all
- 28:32it's the pivotal players is becoming more than that.
- 28:37Similar to Miami Braun very penalized team very
- 28:40undisciplined team which would Pat Narducci.
- 28:43Are you shocked? Not at all?
- 28:45It's that yards. So similar basically they're
- 28:49giving you a entire football field.
- 28:51We did see that against Miami several times that helped us out
- 28:55significantly. So hopefully this time it can
- 28:58help us out significantly and get us a w in the win column.
- 29:02All right? Brian, do you want to announce
- 29:05who's number one? Hendon hooker, note, even have
- 29:13to change it. Is y'all in all seriousness,
- 29:18Saturday night after we finish recording, we just kind of
- 29:22start, you know, we're watching late game 7 on beers talking
- 29:26this and that, and we just said it, right?
- 29:29Then I'm like, Brian henin's. Got to play out of his but the
- 29:32rest of the year for us to win any games and he's like, yeah,
- 29:35so henin's. Probably going to stay.
- 29:36A number one, unless something significantly changes, unless
- 29:41her bird gets 100% healthy and we can start 100% leaning on our
- 29:45running game. Like, we did the first four to
- 29:48five weeks of the Season Hendon. Hookers going to be the guy
- 29:52gotta pee. Now, number two is a group
- 29:57group. Not a specific player.
- 30:00We've done some specific server last few weeks, but as Brian has
- 30:04stated numerous times, V of average group on this defense
- 30:09has their quarterback. So our wide receivers this week,
- 30:12have to step up. All of them, it seems like
- 30:16Mitchell is going to be back and I'm putting him in the wide
- 30:19receiver group because he is that versatile, but they have to
- 30:22be because we've already said it, they're going to put it in
- 30:28the box. They're going to Meant to stop
- 30:29the run. And they're going to probably
- 30:33occasionally dare us to take shots deep.
- 30:36Got it. We need to make those plays when
- 30:39they're available need to make those plays when they're
- 30:43available. But we also as you mentioned
- 30:45earlier as part of your keys we've got to run some
- 30:47intermediate stuff. We've got to let it get quick to
- 30:50not let those guys continuously tee off on finding so hopefully
- 30:57we draw the right game plan up. Now, the third peace.
- 31:02Y'all is this abstract Abstract, this was my brainchild and I had
- 31:08a when I put it on that at all Brian.
- 31:11My reason behind it. But I think because of how good
- 31:14this defense is, how good they are on third down.
- 31:18It's going to be our second down play calls.
- 31:23Yeah. And I say that because it's one
- 31:25of those things where we know who our offensive coordinator is
- 31:30we go out there and on first down, we attempt to running
- 31:33inside Zone and we get a yard and a half.
- 31:36It is second and nine. We know how to me and you just
- 31:42looking at the data. You looking at the tape you
- 31:44telling me what you're seeing on the tape, we know how good their
- 31:47pass rush is if we are at second and 9 in things like that,
- 31:53getting three to four positive yards to set up second and
- 31:58manageable or third and manageable.
- 32:00They're going to just be able to go back and T off and that's
- 32:04going to be bad. So if you're seeing on this game
- 32:07those second Downplays Brian and they are bad and they're getting
- 32:11no gain or we getting one yard. Shoot me now.
- 32:15Yep, I'm with you, man. I'm with you 100% on this
- 32:19because as you said, and as we've seen a lot this year, You
- 32:25know, sometimes first down is the down.
- 32:27You want to get creative and unless you have success on that
- 32:31second down is where you go with the kind of bread and butter
- 32:35please. And then you tend to Gage, what
- 32:39those plays will be based on what you ran on first down and
- 32:43how much success that we need to be not, not predictable with
- 32:48those play calls, but we need to, definitely make sure that
- 32:51we're smart with how we're setting up those plays and smart
- 32:56with understanding down and distance.
- 32:57And that we don't want to get into third and long situations
- 33:01against this defensive line. I mean you don't want to get in
- 33:03third down third and long situations gets any line but
- 33:06line like this that also will Occasionally, bring pressure on
- 33:09third down with those. Linebackers is pretty scary.
- 33:13It's the truth, man. So again y star s down plays at
- 33:184:00, if you see us being in third and 7 and plus whatever,
- 33:25you're drinking sure, you have a lot of it because it's going to
- 33:28be a rough day to watch the offense.
- 33:31All right, Brian, let's flip it on defense.
- 33:36As far as pivotal players to little Personnel, pivotal points
- 33:40that we have not mentioned that much just year.
- 33:43But with what they do on offense, it's the corners
- 33:48Corners. Absolutely Corners are going to
- 33:51have to cover. Well, Corners are going to
- 33:52tackle wellis, like I said, especially Addison, who will
- 33:56work underneath, kind of some of wherever where our zones are.
- 34:00So we're gonna have to come up and make those tackles in space.
- 34:05So, it's going to be important that they cover well in tackle.
- 34:08Well. Yeah.
- 34:10And you know we don't know Jermaine wall or status at this
- 34:13point. If he still banged up I'm almost
- 34:16thinking he's out for the year continue to let Dorian strong
- 34:20Brian Murray or mine Chapman. Continue to develop in, you
- 34:27know, I think the as the way, the first one rolls on its The
- 34:34first one kind of goes into the second one.
- 34:36Right? Yeah.
- 34:37We get it Saturday night in the number.
- 34:39Two thing that's got to happen. Is if you tell me, Justin,
- 34:43Hamilton calls that game this week, they're not going to get
- 34:50to 17. That's the way I feel he kept
- 34:54his coverage. Is he mixed up?
- 34:56The blitz is he was going some man.
- 34:58He was going to man, free going, man, 0.
- 35:01Then there were Concepts where he was throwing everybody.
- 35:04He had Miami off balance enough of that game, slowed them down.
- 35:11It's the play calls. Can he do it again Ron?
- 35:14Yeah, I think you can. I think I think what he finally
- 35:17said was I'm going to stop with the calls, you know, sometimes
- 35:23coaches get into this, especially play callers the we
- 35:27do what we do mentality. And I think he finally broke out
- 35:31of the we do, we do mentality and said, I'm going to call a
- 35:35game that's going to keep the other team off balance.
- 35:39Regardless of what we do. Well, regardless of what our
- 35:43normal philosophy is mixing back in some of the schemes that bud
- 35:49used that really we're successful with the type of
- 35:53players we already have on the roster was a smart move.
- 35:57I think maybe we should have pivoted to this some earlier in
- 36:00the season to kind of get some of those guys comfortable
- 36:04because a lot of times we didn't do enough when they looked
- 36:08uncomfortable too. Get them back into the game and
- 36:12I feel like mixing things up definitely kept them interested
- 36:15and let them know that. Hey we're going to let you do
- 36:19what's comfortable for you. But occasionally you're going to
- 36:21have to get a little uncomfortable and do what you've
- 36:23been coached. And I think the mix of that was
- 36:26good for them. It really was.
- 36:28And again if he calls it like he did last week, I think we hold
- 36:32this team down hopefully enough for a win.
- 36:34All right, third, very controversial here.
- 36:40If we you know, we don't we don't we're straight-laced most
- 36:43time we don't go crazy controversy.
- 36:45Although last few Saturday nights in the amount of alcohol
- 36:49in the discussions that have been happening, you can say
- 36:51they're controversial but after the way he played last week
- 36:56after the first drive, its Dax because if Dax plays that way
- 37:00against this team, he's going to have another big day.
- 37:03Yeah Dax was one of the better players on the defense last
- 37:07week, which I haven't said it all this season.
- 37:11We probably haven't played since 2018.
- 37:13Yeah, he had a couple games last year, where he played.
- 37:17Well, not great. But well, this was the first
- 37:22game where other than the first drive?
- 37:24He looked like he wasn't overthinking and trying to do
- 37:30too much. He let it be let the game come
- 37:33to him. He was in the right position
- 37:37when he was had coverage responsibilities in the flat.
- 37:40Did a good job of Not letting the quarterback get outside and
- 37:47bus big runs. He used the sidelines as
- 37:50leverage. He turned guys back inside when
- 37:53he needed to, it was a sound. We played game by Dax and if he
- 37:57can do that again, that's going to be big for us.
- 38:01It's absolutely the truth. Because with X being able to
- 38:03spell, Richard being able to either start at backer, or spell
- 38:09Tisdale. Keep that rotation and keep
- 38:11those guys fresh twitch. You know, when we see that we
- 38:15know, as we get deeper into the game, we don't Bulls we don't
- 38:20leverage or not. I thought that was going to be
- 38:22one of the strengths at the start of the season was having
- 38:24three guys that you could count on and just between not really
- 38:30getting the new system and a couple guys coming in out of
- 38:32shape and Tisdale being banged up first part of the season and
- 38:37covid. I mean, it was a Kind of, kind
- 38:41of a tough run there for the linebackers and hopefully, with
- 38:43some of the things jams done to mix up, the calls that these
- 38:46guys will start showing out again, like they did last year
- 38:49in some spots, absolutely. All right, Brian real quick.
- 38:54Jalen Holston, gets the 25 earned it earned it, it will
- 38:59only matter if they continue to use him correctly.
- 39:10Last week, he was effective, no one with the, with the 70, 80 to
- 39:1685 percent juice, it kept juice. Fresh, you imagine juice of 95.
- 39:21100 percent were Jalen's going in there, and getting some of
- 39:24the little, you know, some of the harder inside Zone runs.
- 39:27Yeah, maybe start leaning on Holst, a little bit as the spell
- 39:32guy. Find something for Blackshear to
- 39:35do outside of the box. Wait a second.
- 39:39Brian. Didn't you say earlier that if
- 39:41we need to exploit the edges there's a certain guy that can
- 39:45exploit the edges in our wide receiving courtesans Blackshear,
- 39:48please do it please. So bronze eye on things and
- 39:53having get belligerent on Saturday.
- 39:56Brian. I looked at the the we're
- 39:59getting in the truck and we're heading up to Pittsburgh looks
- 40:01like we're going maroon white maroon That's what it looks
- 40:05like, man. I'm okay with that, you know, I
- 40:10don't hate it, I don't love it, I don't hate it.
- 40:12It's kind of the You know, not necessarily what I default to,
- 40:18but at the same time, it's kind of kind of classic as well.
- 40:22So because hi buddy. You know, we had to get here,
- 40:27right? We did.
- 40:29Yeah, to get to the predictions. You know what?
- 40:33I'll go ahead and start this out right now.
- 40:35Just my feeling as a fan. What I've seen in the last pain
- 40:40is just it's worrisome where I am at all.
- 40:44On this coaching staff, where I'm at on on, you know, kind of
- 40:51all that specs on the team, I'm down on them.
- 40:54And really, I'm going to continue to stay down seeing how
- 40:57good this defense is and with the this ugly thought in the
- 41:02back of my head, that the old defense is going to show up for
- 41:05a couple quarters. I'm going to go pit
- 41:10unfortunately I think pit going to go 2827 and again what I keep
- 41:19saying there's going to be drives where we're going to be
- 41:22at the doorstep that if we punch it in we can win this game but
- 41:25we're going to kick field goals. Okay.
- 41:29Okay. The last week we kicked it, we
- 41:32kicked a couple field goals. We attempted a long field goal
- 41:35and essentially one-point game. That's what loses you couple
- 41:42times, man, but we should win this football game.
- 41:45I don't know if we're gonna win this football game, it's the
- 41:52conundrum and because I don't trust what teams going to come
- 41:55off the bus. I don't trust with the coaches
- 41:57are going to do. In crunch time.
- 41:59So it's hard for me to say 100% like if you just said, we're
- 42:04going to get the best game from our coaches.
- 42:06I'd say we probably win, but I can't guarantee that you said we
- 42:11were to get the best game from our offensive line and not the
- 42:14game. We got last week, I'd say we
- 42:15probably win but I don't know that we're going to get that.
- 42:17So You know what I'm going to do, I'm going to take, I'm gonna
- 42:25go out on a limb here. I'm going to say that enough of
- 42:29what we need, gets off the bus and we pull out a tight when
- 42:3231:28 rhyme goes 31:28. Vti take it 2827 because we kick
- 42:41field goals versus scoring touchdowns.
- 42:44All right, let's roll on get into our pickups for this week.
- 42:49Last week. Brian, we salvaged 103.
- 42:53And to, for both of us, I completely whiffed on the
- 42:57Michigan game. You nailed that one, but I got
- 42:59to UVA game, right? Unfulfilled, that's back-to-back
- 43:03weeks of you nailing UVA, man. Jesus, she said, give them all
- 43:10the credit. You know, they're there.
- 43:14Well, let's start. Let's start with tomorrow night,
- 43:17Syracuse. Louisville Louisville, is laying
- 43:21eggs. 18 and a half points JB and Hawkins has opted out for
- 43:25the season run. I led with the first you'd lead
- 43:28with this. What do you say man?
- 43:32Q sucks but I don't know what team Louisville is going to be
- 43:35especially with Hawkings up and out.
- 43:37So give me Hughes, I'm with you 18 points when literally your
- 43:46most consistent offensive player is not going to be there. 18
- 43:52points way too much to lay. We know how bad that Louisville
- 43:55defense is I think Louisville wins.
- 43:58I think he's probably going to be an entertaining game, but 18f
- 44:01is just no way to go. Just play.
- 44:03Cover three and spy kind of game whole game and you probably
- 44:08going to be okay. Absolutely.
- 44:10Alright, FSU Clemson. Never thought I'd say this in
- 44:16this game, Clemson is laying 35 and a half points.
- 44:23And with all the turmoil players opting out injured players down
- 44:28at FSU, I'm laying the 35 and a half.
- 44:30I think Debo enjoys putting it on FSU and I think he will put
- 44:34it on it, especially with Trevor Lawrence back this week.
- 44:40I'm torn between the dumpster fire and the fact that Clemson
- 44:44probably won't have to put their foot on the gas for four
- 44:47quarters. So that's what I'm weighing and
- 44:50I'm going to say that. I think Clemson wins by 32.
- 44:56So, I'll take FS you in this one.
- 44:59Does FSU break 14? I think they get to 17. alright
- 45:09think they get to 17 so I'm saying Clemson is somewhere
- 45:12around 50 why who's laying now 39 and a
- 45:31half point was say you Oh man, you know, you've had, you've had
- 45:38a run of luck picking UVA, so I'll take him here against good
- 45:42old Abilene Christian. Um, I'm gonna go get some this
- 45:48week, Brian, especially with the big opt-out Abilene.
- 45:55Christian is not a good school, they're wanting for their
- 45:58one-in-four. They've kept it competitive a
- 46:00couple games but with UVA having probably their most talented
- 46:06interior defensive lineman up or essentially getting the transfer
- 46:10portal this week and then we know how thin they are on
- 46:13offensive line. One of They're Stars went out.
- 46:18I think they win the game by like 30 so somewhere like 42:10,
- 46:25but I don't think I can't wait. Thirty nine and a half with
- 46:27them? I think they know they have to
- 46:29play conservative play, not to lose play smart.
- 46:33So I'm going to go with howling Christian and thirty nine and a
- 46:36half. Okay.
- 46:38All right, I don't hate it. You know, when you have that
- 46:43many points you really can't hate.
- 46:46Like if you're, if you're if you're if you're taking the
- 46:50points, you know it's one of those things where you just
- 46:53constantly like you just need to freaking keep scoring.
- 46:56Like do not stop. Why are you putting your fourth
- 46:59string talent in your only up 28?
- 47:03You need to score, keep it going.
- 47:08All right, got a responsibility here, responsibility winning
- 47:12money. All right, Brian, let's do this
- 47:14one. Next Liberty in, NC State you
- 47:18seen this one? Yeah, this one.
- 47:22You shot by that. You shot by state Lane three and
- 47:26a half. Yeah, that's, that's, that's a
- 47:29weird line. Very weird line.
- 47:35You get to pick first on this one, who you going with?
- 47:38This is the one that's kind of torn me.
- 47:40The other ones on our list, I felt good about this.
- 47:44One was back and forth, back and forth, back and forth, but I'm
- 47:49going to take a liberty. I will take them in points.
- 47:52I know I'm not going to say they're going to win this game
- 47:54outright, but I think they're playing well enough, you know,
- 47:59with the backup quarterback down in NC State to To at least keep
- 48:07it within a field goal and get that book when I would take
- 48:12Liberty out, right? So Give me liberty liberty with
- 48:17a moneyline. They're all right, Brian.
- 48:20Let's go to the big game in the Big Ten in the Horseshoe at high
- 48:26noon on Saturday, Indiana and Ohio State, Ohio State Lane 20,
- 48:34Anna The feel-good Story of the Year.
- 48:37I've not been able to see if the coach's son you're doing.
- 48:41Okay. Got, you know, kind of banged
- 48:43up, pretty scary, last Saturday, but what do you think with this
- 48:47one, Brian? I unfortunately think the
- 48:52feel-good kind of runs out in this one.
- 48:56I like Ohio State laying the 20. I don't think it's gonna be much
- 48:59over that, but I think it'll be about three scores.
- 49:04I'm going to flip and go the opposite way.
- 49:06I think Indiana is going to cover it.
- 49:08I think Indiana is going to give a Tougher fight, and what you're
- 49:14thinking? I think they can, I think they
- 49:17can score enough points to stay right in earshot, probably lose
- 49:23somewhere, between 10 and 13. So I like getting 20, I do see
- 49:26that as a high-scoring game, I don't know what the over-under
- 49:29is, let me look real quick, I'm just now and then put the
- 49:32because efforting pretty rare for me everything.
- 49:44Yeah. All right, Brian.
- 49:53Let's go true Pac-12 after dark. All right, a 10:30 kick between
- 50:02the Utes of Utah and the USC Trojans.
- 50:07As the Trojans, laying three and a half or three points.
- 50:12Straight up here, having a lookie lookie at this.
- 50:15This is in Utah. Not sure if they've got fans.
- 50:18This is Utah's first game. They had everything.
- 50:21Their first two were cancelled. USC is winning by the skin of
- 50:26their teeth. But I think this is going to be
- 50:30one of those is hard-nosed and tough as Utah plays USC's, had
- 50:35those couple weeks to figure out the Kinks.
- 50:38I think they win this game by more than three points.
- 50:43So, give me USC. Lay the three.
- 50:49Not so fast. My friend not so fast.
- 50:53Give me Utah. I don't think that I think
- 50:57Utah's going to maybe shock them a little bit with maybe some
- 51:01wrinkles that they're putting in at the gate.
- 51:02So I think you time I jump up on them pretty quick and USC having
- 51:07a play a little comeback and it's going to come up, just
- 51:09short. All right.
- 51:13So Brian takes the three with Utah.
- 51:17And Brian, our last one here, one of my favorite rivalries.
- 51:25In the sport of college football, Oklahoma State,
- 51:30Oklahoma, Oklahoma is land 7. It's Bedlam, it's always a good
- 51:36game. Even though it felt like four
- 51:37years. Oklahoma, dominated it, but you
- 51:40always feel that rivalry there. What do you think on this one,
- 51:43Oklahoma Lane seven? It's a tough one man.
- 51:50This is a tough one. I like Oklahoma to win this one
- 51:54out, right? But I don't know if I like that
- 51:56seven line. So give me your key State.
- 52:00All right. I am with you on that.
- 52:04I think I don't know who's going to win this game when I feel
- 52:09like it's not going to win, you have to take the other side.
- 52:12You have to take the points because you know Oklahoma wins
- 52:17by anywhere from 1 to 6 your winner either way.
- 52:23So and the other piece Oklahoma state has some semblance of a
- 52:31defense. Follow means they'd be
- 52:35undefeated if their defense had remembered to play the fourth
- 52:37quarter against Texas, which I'm still kind of baffled that, but
- 52:41yes, it is what it is, man. All right, so there are our
- 52:46picks for the week. We'll see how the cakes up.
- 52:49Obviously, coming off of winning week.
- 52:51We're feeling better about our picks this week, mr.
- 52:54Siegel oh. Yes, sir.
- 52:56You have advised me that you are doing some tests, smoking this
- 53:00weekend. You're doing doing some, some
- 53:03dry runs. Normally, I do a full bird for
- 53:06Thanksgiving, but this, this year, I'm going to to breast
- 53:13mixing in some different different things.
- 53:14So, I'm doing a couple dry runs of a couple new rubs.
- 53:18I want to try that are more or seasonal, a couple injections
- 53:23and then based on that. Picking the two that I want to
- 53:27use on the big day. So, we'll have some turkey this
- 53:32weekend and then we'll have some more turkey come Thursday.
- 53:36So, it's I will be turkey heavy for the next week or so, man.
- 53:40So basically a week or so held sounds like, if you're doing it
- 53:44this weekend and then you're going to do it on Thanksgiving,
- 53:46you're going to be legitimately eating turkey sandwiches for 10
- 53:49days. Well, I'm throwing a good amount
- 53:53of what I'm doing this weekend to the neighbors.
- 53:55To my pops. Oh yeah.
- 53:58I'll have a probably have a couple meals and maybe a good
- 54:01good Sammy out of it or two. But you know, a good chunk of
- 54:05it's going elsewhere. And then the other two will be
- 54:08just for the the big day and 44 leftover, Sammy's after that.
- 54:13So, very nice. Very nice man.
- 54:16All right, check in everything here.
- 54:19We've got a good Collegiate football, game, Tulsa, Tulane.
- 54:22Tulsa scored last play of the game to tie it up.
- 54:25Up. Hey 21:21 and the Cardinals and
- 54:30the Seahawks here, also a good game so we'll be watching that
- 54:34as we wrap this up or anything else.
- 54:36Breaking on Pokey front or college football front, I
- 54:40haven't seen anything big man. I think we are good to go.
