- 2:07waiting on the next big one to come through at some point late this afternoon,
- 2:10maybe midday to late afternoon in the CVD. What exactly is it all
- 2:15going to mean and how much more? Meteorologist Brian Houghst from Storm Chapter thirteen

- 2:51Delegates member representing a large portion of Charleston More Capita was the House member representing
- 2:55the district. He opted to resign to concentrate on his bid for the Republican
- 2:59nomination for governor. Go to Justice last week made his choice. It's jb
- 3:02akres to fill that role, and he joins us now. He's already been
- 3:06on duty though at the capitol. Jb good morning, How are you?
- 3:07Thanks man, I really appreciate you having me. Thank you for being here.
- 3:10So kind of got thrown into the fire. There really wasn't much of
- 3:14a of a law there. I mean, you pretty much were named a
- 3:19hand your book and said go right. Yeah. I mean I had less
- 3:22than twenty four hours notice. And you know, it's funny because you had
- 3:25to apply to get the seat first. First of all, she could to
- 3:29apply, and then out of the county they named three people and sent those
- 3:30three names to the governor. So I can't say that it was a complete
- 3:34shock that I was picked only because I was up for consideration. But I
- 3:37had had good friends who you know, during that process, which it only
- 3:39was a couple of days from the time we got our name submitted to the
- 3:43governor until I was chosen, and I had some friends who are like,
- 3:46oh, you know, what's going to happen? Tell us, what's going
- 3:46on. I said, I really have no idea, because the only thing
- 3:49you can say about Jim Justice in terms of knowing what he's going to do
- 3:53is the only thing predictable is he sometimes I'm predictable very often. Yeah.
- 3:57I mean, although I certainly appreciate his confidence in me, and I'm really
- 4:00humbled that he chose me, but I really had no idea what was going
- 4:01to happen. I was actually in a deposition because I'm a lawyer. It's
- 4:04my full time job and I've got law practice in Charleston. So I was
- 4:08in a deposition and I got a message and said, hey, can you
- 4:10take a phone call? And that was I guess that was Tuesday afternoon.
- 4:13Yeah, it was Tuesday afternoon late and they called me and told me,
- 4:16which was great, and you know, it was extremely excited about that,
- 4:19but I had to go right back into a deposition. Then there was a
- 4:21press release right after that, and I had less than twenty four hours to
- 4:25get all my stuff together. I want to say quickly that evening, aside
- 4:30from getting a phone call and being told that I was to pick, the
- 4:32best part about that day was my wife. I actually didn't got to swear
- 4:36me in in the House of Delegates chamber because my wife is Mary Claire Acres.
- 4:40She's a Kenall County Circuit judge. She was very well known and well
- 4:43respected in the community. So she got to go with me and my kids
- 4:46and she actually swore me in and they told me and this is, you
- 4:48know, hopefully true. They think that that's the first time that a spouse
- 4:53ever swore in their spouse in the House of Elegance, which that was really
- 4:57cool. Well, and she probably she's like most why she probably swears at
- 5:00you, but this time she's swearing you in the thing. It was a
- 5:04positive swearing in this swing out, that's right. Yeah, when you got
- 5:08home was a totally different story. Now you mentioned your an attorney, JB.
- 5:11Give us the rest of the bio and Jbacres, where are you're from?
- 5:13How did you get here? It's the whole deal. Well, my
- 5:15background is really important in terms of this district because I was initially I was
- 5:19actually born at bar H Hospital in Raleigh County. My family lived in Fayettevie
- 5:23at the time, so I was raised in Fayetteville, which everybody knows well
- 5:26obviously, And they've got great news recently they're part of the National Park System
- 5:30now over there. But I was raising a more smaller town until around second
- 5:33grade. We moved to Cable County when I was young, and then I
- 5:38graduated from Milton High School, which was a smaller high school, a very
- 5:41small triple A high school. So I know what it's like to live in
- 5:45a smaller community and be raised in a more rural environment. I've been in
- 5:47Charleston now though for about almost twenty five years, so I've been in the
- 5:53city for a long time raising my family here. But I have a good
- 5:57understanding of what the people in the more ruralers urban suburban areas want either their
- 6:00delegates, while also knowing what the folks in the city of Charleston want,
- 6:04which is important because this is a very diverse district in terms of the makeup.
- 6:08It's a pretty big district. It makes up about south of or I'm
- 6:13sorry, about half of South Hills or maybe a little more than half.
- 6:15It's almost all of Kanall City, but then the rest of it is it
- 6:19goes down the river east and then is the almost the entire portion of what
- 6:25really is the entire southern portion of Kanall County. Then it runs over west
- 6:29and takes up the Tornado area and then runs back east again towards South Hills.
- 6:33So it's a mix of urban, suburban and rural communities, and I
- 6:38understand the needs of all those folks. Yeah, and that's interesting that,
- 6:41you know, Thank you for pointing that out, because sometimes with the districts
- 6:45the way that they line up, it's pretty much all the same types of
- 6:46people, the same backgrounds and things that nature. And certainly not with that
- 6:49district that you're talking about. You couldn't get any more different. No,
- 6:53No, it's really interesting because a lot of folks. Obviously, people say
- 6:56West Virginia is a red state, which by and large it is, but
- 6:58we have some very deep pot it's a blue and Charleston is one of those
- 7:00places. My district they call purple district. It's really split about fifty to
- 7:05fifty between Republicans and Democrats. It's pretty close. But one of the reasons
- 7:09I think I never asked the governor. But one of the reasons I think
- 7:12that I was chosen is because I had good success here back in twenty eighteen
- 7:15when I ran for mayor. Some folks may remember my name from the mayoral
- 7:18race which of course I lost that race, and I don't like to lose,
- 7:21but it was a close race, and the area is importantly. Two
- 7:26of the areas I won in that race in twenty eighteen included I won all
- 7:30of South Hills and I won Kennall City, So those places are in my
- 7:33district now, which I think is important because those folks obviously voted for me,
- 7:38and I'm a Republican. So for me to have a close race back
- 7:42in twenty eighteen, because you can remember this too, Charleston demographically is still
- 7:46largely a Democrat city. Back in twenty eighteen, it was fifty two percent
- 7:49Democrat, only twenty four percent Republican, and it's still pretty close to those
- 7:53same numbers. I think Democrats are now about forty eight percent, but Republicans
- 7:56are still only twenty four percent in the city. So for me to have
- 7:59a close race in twenty eighteen, that means almost every Republican had to vote
- 8:01it for me, which is a compliment and I'm glad of that. And
- 8:05I had to have a lot of Democrat crossover too, I mean a lot
- 8:07of Democrats had to vote for me, and it was close. And you
- 8:11look at twenty eighteen No at large city council candidate. He was a Republican
- 8:15one, which was the first time anybody remember that happening. So just was
- 8:16not a good Republican year yet ed Gone she was in the state Senate.
- 8:20He lost because he got beat largely in the West Side. He lost to
- 8:24rich Lindsay that year. So I didn't like to lose. But if I
- 8:28look back and I'm realistic about it, I take it as a compliment that
- 8:31I it was a close race because I had so many people who supported me
- 8:35from both sides of the aisle. And I think that was important in this
- 8:37pick because I'm going to have to have, you know, the ability to
- 8:41talk to people who are Democrats and Republicans and get folks to come together and
- 8:45unify their their voice and their needs. But you learned a lot from that
- 8:48race too. I did learn. The first was that's the first time you'd
- 8:50ever run for office, first time I'd ever run. I have and again
- 8:54like I have almost no one in my family who went to college, no
- 8:56one directly who was you know, a lawyer, nobody involved in politics.
- 9:01So you know, when I came to Charleston, this was not my background
- 9:05and The first time I ran for office was in twenty eighteen, and really
- 9:07just worked my way up through that process by building relationships. And you know,
- 9:11I'll tell you Dave again, I've been a Republican since I was eighteen
- 9:15years old. That's the only party I've ever been registered to, So I
- 9:18can literally say I'm a lifelong Republican. And while I moved to Charleston in
- 9:20ninety nine, a lot of times there was no one for me to vote
- 9:24for in the primary, and when you got to the general, the choice
- 9:26was already made. I mean, whoever the Democrat was won the race,
- 9:30But I was Republican anyway, and I actually volunteered. Didn't know her at
- 9:33all, but I volunteered on now Senator Capitol's first congressional campaign in two thousand,
- 9:39just because I thought it was important to have some balance and have a
- 9:41Republican, you know, win that race. And I was a big,
- 9:45you know fan of hers, just the things she said and what she stood
- 9:46for back then. So I got involved almost immediately, just trying to help,
- 9:52you know, like minded folks win some of these races. And I
- 9:54built relationships over the years, but always still being someone that I feel like
- 10:00people can talk to. So you know, I've got most of the people
- 10:03my family are Democrats. You know, some of that was out of necessity
- 10:05so you'd have somebody to vote for, but a lot of them still are.
- 10:07I've got people in my family who are labor members, teachers. My
- 10:11family comes from a coal mining background, So i understand the needs of that
- 10:15community and those voters and those folks, and so I'm always going to be
- 10:18somebody you can you can talk to. Now, one of the things I
- 10:22learned in twenty eighteen, unfortunately, is some people don't want to talk to
- 10:24you. Some people just want to, you know, criticize you. And
- 10:28that comes to the territory. So you've got to have a thick skin in
- 10:31this as well. You have to be willing to take criticism, which you
- 10:33hope is constructive because I'm not always going to be right, but I'm always
- 10:37going to listen. And you know, I'm going to have to work very
- 10:39hard to meet the diverse needs this district and I will. I'm confident that
- 10:43i will do that. Talking again with the new delegate for this for the
- 10:46fifty fifth rightif district redistricts, we're now fifty five, it would have been
- 10:50thirty five before, but right now fifty five jb Acres is with us.
- 10:54So I know it's early, and as I said, you literally got thrown
- 10:56into this thing early. But what's your impression been so far? Well,
- 11:01I can say without a doubt that and I hope this continues as long as
- 11:05possible. But folks in the Capitol have been extremely supportive and helpful to me.
- 11:09I've walked around tried to meet as many people as possible, but as
- 11:13soon as I walked in, I had people coming up to me and said,
- 11:15hey, congratulations, let us know what we can do to help you,
- 11:18which is you know, we hear a lot of negative things about politics,
- 11:20and there's certainly criticism that to do, but you know, Dave,
- 11:24most of the people who go to that capitol, Republican or Democrat, go
- 11:28there with the right intentions. They want to go there to try to help
- 11:31people and get things done. You know, there's some folks who I think
- 11:33we can maybe be a little more critical of than others, but by and
- 11:37large, those are nice folks who you know, we may disagree with them,
- 11:39but we should at least give them a chance. And you know,
- 11:43they've been very receptive to me, and I will say that right away.
- 11:46People you know, and trying to be helpful, started putting some bills in
- 11:50front of me saying, hey, do you want to sponsor this am I
- 11:52you know, i'd have to say, well, I need to read it
- 11:54first. Yeah, I want to see what you Yeah, I want to
- 11:56see what's in it first. It's very important to me and actually know what
- 11:58the bill says. I'm never going to be someone who if a person,
- 12:01even if they're a friend or some special interest I generally support, if they
- 12:05walk up and say, hey, we you sponsor this bill? You know
- 12:09you know us, I'm still going to say what's in it? Right?
- 12:11I think that's extremely important. I want to ask you about a couple of
- 12:13those things. And I know, as I said, you're still kind of
- 12:16learning your way around over there. But a lot of talk about the governor's
- 12:20budget, specifically his spending plan and propose pay raises for public workers, including
- 12:24teachers. Any any thoughts on that, well, I mean the raises for
- 12:28the public employee employees. I mean some Republicans you know, want to cut
- 12:31government every single time. You know, sometimes you just can't. I think
- 12:37the pay raises are going to be necessary because the pe A situation until we
- 12:41get a handle on pe i A, which is easier said than done,
- 12:45and make it so that people, you know, the public employees aren't seeing
- 12:48increases and they're PI premiums, which you know sometimes are just significant. We're
- 12:52going to have to offset that somehow. So you know, I'm going to
- 12:54be in favor of that. In terms of the raises, I think the
- 12:56public employees are going to need that. Some of the other budget proposals,
- 13:01I mean, he has a flat budget. He's taken some money out of
- 13:03the surplus I think to make up for some of his increases. But you
- 13:05know, I think if you look at the governor's proposals and ideas this year,
- 13:11he was actually I think it was a very sympathetic or maybe empathetic proposal
- 13:15in some of these things trying to He had some mental health money in there,
- 13:18which I think is important that a lot of times gets overlooked. Some
- 13:22family initiatives, some childcare initiatives, which I think are also important, which
- 13:26we should support those as much as we're able to. You know, I
- 13:28would say there's some things where I maybe would look for some tax decreases in
- 13:33some areas he didn't mention. Of course, those are always again easier so
- 13:35than done, which you have to build a pay for him. But I
- 13:39thought overall it was a modest budget proposal. I know got some criticism,
- 13:43maybe especially in the Senate side. It seems to be where most of his
- 13:46friction comes from, but it wasn't anything extreme that I saw, so I
- 13:50think I think most of it was pretty well received, and then we're just
- 13:52going to figure out how to get the details. One other thing I want
- 13:54to ask about before we let you go. Center President Craig Blair and also
- 13:56another Senator, Mike Stewart, both gone on record as saying that they would
- 14:01support bringing back the death penalty, particularly for those who would manufacture or distribute
- 14:05Fittonel. Where are you on that? That is, Well, let me
- 14:07say this, I think in terms of I think that there are people who
- 14:11commit crimes that are so heinous that, in my view, you know,
- 14:16you could be subject to that penalty under certain circumstances. But I'll also say
- 14:22that as someone who respects the right to life, which I do, I'm
- 14:24a pro life person, and there are many bones about that I think we
- 14:26should be consistent. So we're going to have to work out how do you
- 14:31subject someone to that penalty, And to me, it probably needs to be
- 14:35something more than more than a beyond a reasonable doubt standard. I think we'd
- 14:39have to do something. We'll raise a burden to proof if we're going to
- 14:41talk about reinstituting that, if we're going to respect the right to life and
- 14:43make sure there's no possibility that an innocent person could ever be executed, and
- 14:48that's happened before. So if we have a standard, for example, where
- 14:52there's beyond any doubt whatsoever, or we have an admission by someone who commits
- 14:54a completely heinous crime, you know, I at least would be one to
- 14:58discuss those things because I think some folks you know, could subject themselves to
- 15:03that. But that that's gonna be an issue where, you know, I
- 15:05don't want to just make that a red meat issue and say, you know,
- 15:09I'm a Republican, I'm hardcore, I'm against crime, which I am
- 15:11all those things. I'm against crime. I think people who hurt others should
- 15:15be subject to penalties and punishment, But we got to do it the smart
- 15:18way. Are you going to run for reelection? Absolutely? Yeah, I've
- 15:20already filed, so you know, I'll tell people. I don't have a
- 15:24website up yet. I didn't have time for that, but I'm going to
- 15:28be available anytime. I've got a you know, my numbers in the legislative
- 15:31website. I do have my picture number up there, at least my emails
- 15:33on there. I got emails this weekend this weekend from constituents, which I
- 15:37responded to already. I always invite people my personal cell phone numbers on my
- 15:41legislative website. You can call that, you can email me, and I
- 15:46will get back to you. I'm very responsive to those things. And one
- 15:48of the things I actually like about this job is I actually like talking to
- 15:52people, meeting them. Well, you're in the right business for that.
- 15:54Yeah, well, I mean it's by necessity, but I actually enjoyed it.
- 15:56I like, I like solving problems, and you know, this is
- 15:58not a way. Yeah, you know to me, some folks I think
- 16:03if they get elected to the local office, they think the next step is
- 16:06a presidency. I'm focused on making sure the people this district are taking care
- 16:08of. My main focus day of is jobs in the economy. Where I
- 16:11ran from mayor, that was the main thing I talked about with jobs in
- 16:14the economy that has not changed. There are other issues they are important too,
- 16:18but I want to get people to work and make it so that we
- 16:19can raise our families here and get some big wins. I'll see this quickly.
- 16:23The state of West Virginia has had some big wins in the past couple
- 16:26of years economically. We cannot deny that, regardless of what your politics are.
- 16:29We've had some large projects moving to the state, but some of those
- 16:32need to be closer to the Canall Valley, and I want to get us
- 16:34in the conversation to restart some of our large industries here in this area.
- 16:37That would be great. It's just better for everybody. Look and jb Acres,
- 16:41we wish you the best of luck. Congratulations on the new seat.
- 16:45Dan. You've already said that you will be running for reelection. You'll be
- 16:48filling out more capitols than you're running for reelection, so we wish the best
- 16:52of luck. Will have you on a couple of times you're in the session.
- 16:53Thanks for shiving vote for Mary Claire Acres too. She's running for Do
- 16:57you know she's on the show tomorrow? I didn't. Yeah, it's she
- 17:00really tomorrow was coming up soon? Yeah, I think, yeah, yeah,
- 17:03she's on the show. To mar she reached out to me. She's

- 20:51Putnam County Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for their annual dinner. It's going
- 20:53to be held Friday, the twenty sixth to Valley Park Conference Center, always
- 20:56the highlight of the year for business and residents too, a Putnam County normally
- 21:00sold out crowd. Ashley offered Glance as the executive director of the Putnam County
- 21:04Chamichi joins us. Now, Ashley, good morning, welcome to the show.
- 21:07Good morning Dave, thanks for having me, Thank you for being here.
- 21:11Big doings next Friday night at Putnam County. There are there are,
- 21:15but before we get started, I also received texts when I'm on the show,
- 21:21and I received a text that says, please ask Dave about the cowboys.
- 21:26I don't want to talk about football. I hate football. I hate
- 21:30football. I can't wait till I can't wait. No, we're bringing the
- 21:33Reds Caravan back to Charleston next Wednesday, I think it is. That's my
- 21:37focus right now. Is baseball, maybe a NASCAR. Well, I'm a
- 21:42huge baseball fan and I can't stand football. And Ryan shut that up.
- 21:47Rights, they're losing his mind. Just stop, all right, all right,
- 21:51all right, anyway, let's move on. Let's move on before I
- 21:53cut you off. Go ahead, okay, okay. Back to the Annual
- 21:56Dinner. Next Friday, January twenty six, the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce
- 22:00will be celebrating with our annual dinner meeting. It's at Valley Park and it
- 22:07is one of the largest networking events in Puttnam County and we're really really proud
- 22:12to be able to host it here at our conference center. And we've got
- 22:17some great things planned for our guests. And it's ice themed. So last
- 22:25year, Dave, if you remember, it was fire themed and we have
- 22:27some fire breathers inside. We have Valley Park, and so this year we
- 22:36everyone makes fun of me, but I say we're cooling it down. Yeah.
- 22:41Now, last year we brought you the hottest party in town, and
- 22:44this year we're bringing We're cooling it down, so it's gonna be ice themed.
- 22:48We've got Fireside Grow catering, We've got some great entertainment. We are
- 22:53all we always love to bring some really fun entertainment to that event, and
- 22:57this year where we've got some local entertainers that are going to be joining us.
- 23:02I think people are really going to like it. Something you've never seen
- 23:04before, which is also something we like to do. Let's bring something new
- 23:10and new and exciting. What else, well, I know, tickets and
- 23:14sponsorships go quickly. Are either available now, yes, yeah, So the
- 23:18deadline is this coming Friday, which is what the nineteenth ticket for tickets right
- 23:23for tickets and sponsorships. Both, yeah, tickets and sponsorships. So you
- 23:27can there's a couple of ways that you can attend. You can buy an
- 23:30individual tickets the price of one hundred and fifty dollars, or you can sponsor
- 23:36the event and each sponsorship comes with an allotted amount of tickets depending on the
- 23:41sponsorship that you that you purchase. And so we are really really grateful for
- 23:48all of our Dreamer members who purchase tickets and who sponsor the event because this
- 23:51is one of our largest fundraisers of the year for the Chamber as well.
- 23:56It is indeed the Dave Allen showing five anuy live brought to part by General
- 24:00Hardware and Number of wind Field from kitchens to paints, decks, straight framing,
- 24:03wood, Roofi metal on anything else you may need, you'll find it
- 24:06a General Hardware and Number of Windfield. We'll get back to the dinner here
- 24:07in a capital moments. But what else is going on at Putnam County.
- 24:11I know it's an exciting place to be. We got businesses opening up,
- 24:15we got people back to you know, moving in almost daily. There's a
- 24:18lot of buzz around Putnam County these days. Ashley, Yeah, there is.
- 24:22We've got people moving in, we've got businesses opening. We have already
- 24:26had let me think, actually we've already had. It's the fifteenth of January
- 24:30and I believe we have already had hold on one, two, three,
- 24:36four, five new businesses joined the Putnam Chamber just this year already, and
- 24:41so we are really excited to be growing and be able to support these businesses
- 24:47in the area. You know, a lot of times we talk a lot
- 24:49about small business and that is something that is really important to us that we
- 24:53at the Chamber have businesses from large all the way up to or from small
- 24:57all the way up to large business is that we really like to work with.
- 25:00So there's jobs. We have tons of employers that are hosting or that
- 25:06are looking for qualified employees. So if you're looking for a job, feel
- 25:10free to reach out to us here at the Cheaper And then another thing that's
- 25:15really exciting, our Putnam Chamber Network of Women is launching this month our Comeback
- 25:21Club, and that is a really cool thing that our women are doing where
- 25:26they are helping women re enter the workforce. So if you have been out
- 25:30of the workforce for a while and you'd like us to help you get reintegrated,
- 25:34give us a call at the Chiever. I could talk more about that
- 25:37later, Dave, but that's something that's being officially launched at the annual dinner
- 25:42on the twenty six is to come Back Club. That's good stuff. Again,
- 25:45we're talking to Ashley offer Glance from the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce and
- 25:48I'll have you on again to talk about this in the future, but I
- 25:51did want to get this in there. You're going to be doing another one
- 25:52of these Dress for Success type events, so we'll have you on again to
- 25:56talk about that at a later time, but give me the basic guy on
- 26:00how that works. Yeah, so Dress for Success here's to Putnam Chamber.
- 26:03We love to partner with Dress for Success of the River City, which is
- 26:07a nonprofit organization that serves Putnam County as well as everything from Canal all the
- 26:12way over to Cabal and surrounding areas. And we they do not have the
- 26:17physical location here in Punham County, but we like to host a quarterly drive
- 26:21for them at least, you know, from during our normal operating hours where
- 26:26you can bring your donations here to us and then we'll make sure that they
- 26:27get to them. So the next one is February seventh here at Area thirty
- 26:33four. And then one other thing, Dave, We've got this week.
- 26:37We have a lunch and learned with Metronom and it's about cybersecurity. All the
- 26:41different acronyms that are being thrown around in regards to cybersecurity now. So we
- 26:45have the folks from Metronom going to be here at Area thirty four on Wednesday
- 26:48and they're going to be talking about you know what all those acronyms mean and
- 26:52how you can keep your company and your personal and yourself safe from cyber attacks.
- 26:59And again that's good beyond Wednesday, and all that information is available on
- 27:02their social media and also on their website. I want to say this about
- 27:04businesses and then we'll take it back to the dinner. We'll let you go.
- 27:07One of the great things I like about Putnam County is it is a
- 27:11unique mix of locally owned businesses from jewelry stores to restaurants, to craft shops
- 27:19and things of that nature. But also you still have your Kroger, and
- 27:22you still got your Target, which just opened not long ago. And there's
- 27:26even another sign of another place is getting ready to open up there at Liberty
- 27:30Square. I just saw that sign about a week or so ago there at
- 27:32Liberty Square and Tays Valley. So it's a unique mix of just about something
- 27:37for everybody there in Putnam County. Yeah, so that's what that's kind of
- 27:41like what I like to say. I like to say, we have everything
- 27:44you need and access to everything you want. So you know, within a
- 27:48censor of your home here in Putnam County, you're going to have access to
- 27:51everything you need, whether it's you know, shopping for groceries or clothing or
- 27:56whatever it is, doctors, in your insurance agents, you're everything. But
- 28:00then because we are centually located here in the metro Valley, we have additional
- 28:06access to everything you might want. So we do have that new edition of
- 28:10the Target obviously in our shopping posit here at Liberty Square. And then everyone
- 28:15has seen the Michael sn go up, so we'll be welcoming them to Putant
- 28:19County soon. Yeah, exciting stuff, and I know, you know,
- 28:22for me, I always have to mention the food, the eateries, and
- 28:26the restaurant Sergio's, which specializes in Italian food. They have opened up now
- 28:30downtown Hurricane. I had food or had dinner there a couple of weeks ago
- 28:33with some friends. The food, they're phenomenal. It's right on Main Street
- 28:37and Hurricane, which is in the old Conley's Irish Pub, and Sergio is
- 28:41just doing a fantastic job. I mean I've read, read, and seen
- 28:44nothing but excellent reviews on that place. And it's a definite great addition to
- 28:48the already to the several other great eateries that we have in Putnam County.
- 28:52Absolutely you know that Sergio is. We're really proud of him and really excited
- 28:56for him. He also is the owner of the Guadalajara Modern Mexican over Nitro,
- 29:00so if you've been there, you're familiar with with his quality of food
- 29:03and so excited to have that on Main Street. Love the renovations that he
- 29:07did to the building. That building has been a couple of different things,
- 29:11all things that we've truly truly loved having. But he did a great job
- 29:14renovating it and getting it set up for his new Italian restaurant there on Main
- 29:18Street. So you can go down there and enjoy, you know, a
- 29:22dining experience, a shopping experience. We've got some great other local restaurants on
- 29:26Main Street. Don't forget to, you know, check out Belknap Joe Company.
- 29:30One thing too to mention about them. They have frozen fresh So if
- 29:33you you know, if you like to just occasionally have a frozen pizza on
- 29:40hand at home, these you can go down there and buy those. They're
- 29:42frozen. All you got to do is sow them in the oven and then
- 29:45they taste just like you were at a restaurant, all locally sourced, you
- 29:49know, not not processed all you know, just the quality you would get
- 29:52in the restaurant. But you can take that home with you. I love
- 29:55having them. We could also make them here at Area thirty four. And
- 29:57I promise I don't eat more than a week, not more than one.
- 30:00You promised about that. Let's close it out by talking about the dinner again.
- 30:04It's the twenty sixth and information is available on the website. Give us
- 30:07the website again, Yeah, Putnam Chamber dot org. You can go on
- 30:12there and get your tickets online. If you have any trouble, give us
- 30:15a call. You can get tickets or sponsorships. And again, that deadline
- 30:19is Friday. We'll also be giving away our Mayo Luster Community Service Award as
- 30:23well as our Putnam Crew Young Leader Award at that event, so we can't
- 30:26wait to tell you who those are going to be. All right, Ashley,
- 30:30I appreciate you continue to do great things there in Putnham County. We
- 30:33will talk again soon. Thanks a lot, all right, Thanks Dave,

- 33:25snow early yesterday morning. Most of you woke up with that yesterday morning,
- 33:30albeit not a whole lot, but enough to create some driving problems. We
- 33:34had some more snow that rolled through the area late last night during the early
- 33:37morning hours this morning, there's more snow on the way. We understand one
- 33:42thing for sure, as we had. Once we get this snow system out
- 33:45of here, it's be a pretty dang cold by the time Wednesday morning rolls
- 33:49around. I'm not a meteorologist, but he is, and he plays one
- 33:52on television and he is in real life. Brian Hughes from Storm Tracker thirteen,
- 33:54Good morning, sir, how are you? I'm great? You know,
- 33:59I know I'm doing better than you, because you know, the Kansas
- 34:01City Chief one, the Detroit Lions one, and your cowboys just sucked it
- 34:06up, aren't you from Texas? I listen, I as a kid cheered
- 34:09for the Dallas Cowboys. I will cheer for the day the Dallas Cowboys,
- 34:14the day Jerry Jones dead, and and we can move on with live right,
- 34:19all right, alright, alright, all right. So I'm gonna ask
- 34:22you something real quick about before we get to the snow, and that's about
- 34:25the wind. I don't know that I recall, and you're the expert here.
- 34:30I don't know that I recall that we've had a significant wind events as
- 34:34we've been having now not so much with this ticking around the snow, but
- 34:37we had some last week, and we had wind advisories a week before that.
- 34:39What's up with all the wind? Man? I really the wind.
- 34:44The wind is just a product of the significant difference in temperatures and the pressure
- 34:51gradients as well between the two. Between the you know, storm systems that
- 34:54we've had. Because you've had a warm air that tries the work gets way
- 34:57back in, you get that friction a between the two, you get air
- 35:00that mixes, and so you get in extreme you know, temperature differences,
- 35:06you do get enhanced an enhancement of some of the wind. All right,
- 35:09Well, it just seemed like to me that I didn't recall having that many,
- 35:14like back to back, like we had a right, let's talk about
- 35:15the snow. As I said, we got some early yesterday morning. Churches
- 35:20had to cancel some other canceling services and whatever, and then it was pretty
- 35:23good later in the day. Then we had snow that rolled through the area
- 35:25last night. I know when I drove in from tays Valley this morning,
- 35:30Tayes Valley Road was in pretty bad shave had difficult time getting out of my
- 35:32neighborhood. But the interstate was fine. But then as I got into downtown
- 35:37Charleston got a little dicey again. I'm inside a room with no windows.
- 35:42What are we looking at now, Well, we're looking at the snow showers
- 35:45coming back in. We're starting to see the snow increasing across the area.
- 35:49And you know, as anybody who's out there driving around listening to the radio
- 35:52right now, you know that, you know, once you get in the
- 35:54city streets and some of the neighborhood streets that it's treacherous. But the you
- 36:00know, West Virginia Department of Highways has done a great job keeping up with
- 36:02the main interstates. This morning, Turnpike as well, one nineteen has been
- 36:07a little dicey because of the fact that you know, there's it's been snowing
- 36:13more in the coal fields this morning in eastern Kentucky than it has anywhere else.
- 36:16But that band of snow's moving back into the Charleston area right now.
- 36:21So we've got a steady light snow that's continuing to come down, and really
- 36:24I expect, you know, there's gonna be a couple of breaks in the
- 36:28action where we don't get any snow, we're just gonna have flout thinking a
- 36:30round off and onto there at the day. But once we get back about
- 36:34five six o'clock, that snow starts to increase across the area into the evening
- 36:37hours and it'll be pretty steady as we get all the way. It's about
- 36:40eleven midnight tonight. And how much more additional snow were looking at for the
- 36:44Charleston area, Well, at this point we're looking at an additional probably three
- 36:49maybe it's the four inches of snow, you know, compared to what we
- 36:52already have at this time. I am expecting, you know, us to
- 36:57end up within the Charleston metro area with about four maybe five inches worth of
- 37:02snow. There may be a spot or two around the Kanak Cany that might
- 37:07hit six further south you go and on top of a you know, big
- 37:12hill, but I'm expecting about four to five inch Charleston. It just slowly
- 37:16tap resolved the further and once you go, once you go, you know,
- 37:19once you get closer to the Ohio River, they're you know, one
- 37:22to three inches, and you know, as you get down deep of the
- 37:25coal fields, we're talking you know, the easy five to seven inches worth
- 37:29of snell and that you cant acids. We draw a line now from around
- 37:34Paintsville, about about fifteen to twenty miles north of Paintsville, all the way
- 37:38up to about the you know, clay And and Nicholas County line back to
- 37:45the flat woods, and you know they're up higher five to seven inches a
- 37:47couple of spots by eighth. And once we get this system out of here,
- 37:52then by the time early Wednesday morning rolls around, the snow is going
- 37:54to be out of here. As you said, probably wrap up here in
- 37:57the Charleston area late tonight. Could be some lee, lingering showers or flurries
- 38:00early tomorrow morning. But the big deal after that, Brian's going to be
- 38:05the temperatures. And it is going to be bone chilling cold, my friend.
- 38:07Yes, we're gonna have cold. We're not gonna we haven't had this
- 38:12kind of cold since, you know, the since twenty twenty two of Christmas,
- 38:16you know, So we're gonna have single digits from lows on Wednesday morning.
- 38:22I think we'll be around seven eight degrees here in Aaron, Charleston.
- 38:27You're gonna see wind chills are going to be around five degrees below zero in
- 38:30some cases higher up to get in the mountain in West Virginia, you know,
- 38:34fifteen to twenty degrees below zero for the extremes. But you know it's
- 38:37gonna be one of those mornings. Listen, that's the morning that you also,
- 38:42a lot of schools on Wednesday will delay or in some case they might
- 38:45even close. The ol delay schools because you can't get all those buses warmed
- 38:50up. Anything that's melted is solidly frozen. A lot of times. You
- 38:53know, your your salt's not working too well, so you've got that going
- 38:58on. But it's gonna be mostly sunny for the day. I mean,
- 39:00you're gonna need the sunglasses that day. Thursday, we warm up to the
- 39:02mid thirties oo heat waved. But but then on Thursday night going into Friday,
- 39:08we get some light sun showers that one's could be a one to two
- 39:10inch system, maybe three in a couple of spots. I think one to
- 39:14two will be a general rule of thumb for possibly Friday. And you know,
- 39:20and that's on the you know, that's right on the edge of an
- 39:22Arctic blast that comes back in for the weekend. But just know this weekend
- 39:25will be the last one. We will be the last time for this big
- 39:29cold because next week we'll be in the forties and fifties for high Yeah,
- 39:32I heard you talking about that this morning. So we can just hold on
- 39:36and get to the next couple of days. By like midweek next week,
- 39:38Brian, you said, we're going to be in the mid fifties, right,
- 39:40mid to upper fifties. Possibly, everything's gonna be melted off. We
- 39:45don't to worry about any of the snow hanging around, so you know,
- 39:46the ice things that nature. Yeah, it's gonna be nice all next week,
- 39:51but we do expect in the long range forecast, and you know,

- 48:00The Dave Allan Show in five eighty Live, brought to you apart by Morgan
- 48:04and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. Well Mayor Goodwin is set to
- 48:09do her State of the City speech tomorrow night. Now, normally it's held
- 48:15as best I recall, and I could be wrong about this, but it's
- 48:19normally held a little closer to the beginning of the new year. But with
- 48:22the New Years and the holidays, Christmas and New Year's you know, falling
- 48:25on a Monday, presuming that's why it was moved up a little bit.
- 48:29Mayor Goodwin will be on the show tomorrow to talk about it. You know,
- 48:35the year twenty twenty here I am twenty twenty three was a fantastic year
- 48:44for the City of Charles. Lots of good things going on, but some
- 48:46some other things not so good. That comes from being the or just the
- 48:50city in the say of West Virginia, in the capital city. So what
- 48:52is twenty twenty four hold, Well, we're going to find out by talking
- 48:55to Mayor Goodwin on the show tomorrow to gain her State of the City speech
- 49:00will be tomorrow night. Also, I mentioned this earlier tomorrow, Judge Mary
- 49:04Claire Acres, the husband of new delegate from the fifty fifth JB. Acres,
- 49:10Mary Clare Acres, is going to be on the show tomorrow as well.
- 49:13And you know Ryan, you know I love to talk food. Well,
- 49:15there's going to be a chili cookoff happening soon in South Charleston. Talked
- 49:21to Randy and those sign folks at the City of South Charleston about that a
- 49:24couple of weeks ago. So we've lined up somebody to talk about that coming
- 49:29up on the show tomorrow as well. And with the temperatures that we are
- 49:34going to be what we've already seen and with the snow and with the you
- 49:37know, when you head out to work Wednesday morning, it's going to be
- 49:39five degrees with a windshill. Much is lower than that. Good time to
- 49:43talk chili, it really is. I want to mention this. I've been
- 49:47keeping an eye on this story out of Wheeling. Now. I know I
- 49:52don't generally concern we don't generally concern ourselves on this show with things going on
- 49:57in Wheeling being so far away. This one is a little different because it
- 50:00actually deals with an issue that we also face here in Charleston and for that
- 50:07matter, several other communities here in the Kenawh Valley as well. And of
- 50:12course I'm talking about homelessness. Now. We have a story posted about this
- 50:16at the website wv metronews dot com. The American Civil Liberties Union the ACLU,
- 50:23says that they may take legal action against the City of Wheeling regarding the
- 50:30city's treatment of the homeless population. They're in Wheeling now, the city has
- 50:37had a plan to demolish homeless encampments, and this is not something Again,
- 50:42this is why I'm kind of tying this back into Charleston, because you remember
- 50:45this was a thing in the news with former Mayor Danny Jones at one point.
- 50:49But the city has a plan moving into the new year. They actually
- 50:52passed this toward the end of last year, and this new regulation basically from
- 50:55what I understand, basically outlaw and camping unless you're in the woods and you're
- 51:01an actual camper. So they pass this legal action, and so now the
- 51:07ACLU is going after the City of Wheeling regarding this. On Friday, the
- 51:15American Civil Liberties Union said they are giving the City of Wheeling until tomorrow,
- 51:20in their words, to quote rectify constitutional issues end quote with that new city
- 51:24ordinance that went into effect again with the passage and the flip of the calendar
- 51:30in twenty twenty four. Arby Sparks, who is the director of the ACLU
- 51:34of West Virginia, says the ordinance criminalizes being homeless, and that, Spark
- 51:38says, is unconstitutional. Now you may have heard Wheeling Mayor Elliott on the
- 51:43show with Hoppey talking about it from time to time. We'll see what happens
- 51:47here, because again the ACLU sent this letter and I know it's Wheeling,
- 51:52but it has ramifications perhaps for other cities including Charleston, around the state of
- 51:57West Virginia, so we'll see what happens. The ACLU has given the city
- 52:01of Waeling un till tomorrow, as they said, to rectify this situation.
- 52:06Read more about it's a pretty involved story over wv metro news dot com.
- 52:09We'll keep an eye on it for you, all right, gotta go.
- 52:13Thank you to our guests on the show today, the new delegate from the
- 52:15fifty fifth jb Acres, meteorologist Brian Hughes from Storm Tracker thirteen, and Nashley
- 52:20Offered Glance from the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce. Coming up on the show
- 52:22tomorrow again, we're gonna be talking chili with the South Charleston Chili cook Off
- 52:27Charleston marre Amy good Nor will stop buy as well as Judge Mary clear Acres.
- 52:30Keep a close eye on the weather and keep it take it easy on
- 52:34the roads. They are still and they're going to remain slick for some time.
