- 0:00Hour number two, welcome back Miller and Condon.
- 0:02Glad you're with us from Des Moines sports station one O 6.3
- 0:05KXNO and statewide on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:10Wherever you are listening, we are grateful that you are.
- 0:13We take you until the just before the top of the hour at
- 0:16that time off the bench, Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts and they
- 0:20will take you until 5 O clock. Well, still to come this hour we
- 0:24will speak with nickathenschiefsblitz.com,
- 0:28chiefsplitz.com for Nick right now, our buddy Matt Snyder from
- 0:32CBSSports.com, our weekly baseball conversation.
- 0:36Good to chat with you, Matt Snyder, how you been?
- 0:38I'm good. How are you guys doing?
- 0:41Well, appreciate you coming on to do this weekly segment with
- 0:45us. So let's I, I guess I, I, I
- 0:48think we probably about the third straight week and I keep
- 0:51hearing that there's that proverbial switch for the
- 0:53Dodgers boys. I'm not so sure that there is.
- 0:56I really, I, I know I keep saying there's got to be,
- 0:59there's got to be. I mean, that loss on Friday
- 1:02night, Yamamoto takes a no hitter through 8 2/3 and one of
- 1:06the young Orioles took them deep and then they blew the game.
- 1:10I just not so sure, Matt Snyder, that it's the Dodgers year.
- 1:13How about that? Totally agree, it just it's easy
- 1:19to to mindlessly say if someone says like who has the best
- 1:22chance to win the World Series, I feel like our default answer
- 1:26is supposed to be the Dodgers and it's.
- 1:30I, I I've. Wondered similar to what you
- 1:32said on the flipping the switch thing.
- 1:34I have wondered like do they just not take the regular season
- 1:37seriously enough because they've been to the post season every
- 1:41single year as long as any of us can remember.
- 1:43I mean, 2012 was left and they weren't in the playoffs, but I
- 1:49mean, it's 144 games of a sample here and they've been mediocre a
- 1:57lot more often than they've been really good.
- 1:59So it looked still 16 games over 500 stole in first place in
- 2:04their division by a game. But it doesn't look like they're
- 2:07going to get a buy. They're going to have to deal
- 2:08with that wild card round. So I just don't know.
- 2:11I tend to agree with you that it just they don't seem any better
- 2:17than like just a regular, ordinary, run-of-the-mill
- 2:21playoff team. And they were supposed to be
- 2:23way, way better than this. Taking that a step further, I
- 2:27was playing around last night, had a couple of bonus bets in my
- 2:30account after of course I missed some bets, so you get a bonus
- 2:33bet back. And so I was playing around and
- 2:35played a couple of futures and put them in there and put them
- 2:37together. I was absolutely shocked to see
- 2:41that the Phillies are now the betting favorite to win the
- 2:43National League over the Dodgers after obviously the injury at
- 2:49the top of that rotation when Wheeler went down.
- 2:52I don't want to say they're Cook cuz it's still a very deep team,
- 2:55but I'm really surprised by that.
- 2:57And maybe that takes what you guys are saying here with the
- 2:58Dodgers because I've just been on the mindset when we get to
- 3:01October, they're going to be fine.
- 3:04Minus Wheeler. What is it about the Phillies in
- 3:06your mind? Should they be the favorite in
- 3:07the National League? No, the Brewers should be.
- 3:11I think part of it is so many people don't want to believe in
- 3:14the Brewers. And like I said in in power
- 3:18rankings when I ranked the Brewers won again, I said if the
- 3:22Dodgers or the Yankees or the Phillies were 5 1/2 games better
- 3:26than everybody else and I'm paced, went over 100 games and I
- 3:29played at 113 point pace since late May people be falling over
- 3:33themselves talking about how great this team was.
- 3:36Instead with the Brewers, we're always trying to find reasons to
- 3:39say why their teams are better. Don't get it.
- 3:42But anyway, on the Phillies, they are still very strong.
- 3:46Losing Wheeler, obviously big, big, big deal.
- 3:49It does look like Christopher Sanchez is kind of taking over
- 3:52now as an ace. Rangers Suarez is very good too.
- 3:55Maybe last night was the start of Aaron Nola starting to work
- 3:58things out. Then they might have a deep
- 4:01enough rotation there because hey, Suzardo would be there for
- 4:04they've got to run at the end of the Bull 10.
- 4:06The offense now losing Trey Turner is a big deal and it's
- 4:10pretty good to be back for the post season because that that
- 4:13really knocks the offense down a peg.
- 4:17But still got Kyle Schwarber, they still got Bryce Harper.
- 4:20They have guys like Nick Castianos who can get hot at the
- 4:23drop of a hat. It's I think the playoffs are
- 4:27going to be really, really fun. And by no means do I think the
- 4:29Brewers are going to destroy it, dismantle everybody the way that
- 4:32like the 2022 Astros did or the 2018 Red Sox did.
- 4:36But I still feel like people aren't giving the Brewers as
- 4:40much credit as they deserve. I couldn't agree with you more
- 4:43and the I think the you know what, I think both leagues are
- 4:46wide open. How about that?
- 4:47I think we're city, right? It's the what, 9th of September?
- 4:51And I really could make a case for a whole bunch of teams or
- 4:54Trent could give me two other teams and I would have to
- 4:57listen. And I think that's good for the
- 4:58game at this point, Matt, before I.
- 5:01Went on CBS Sports HQ doing video today.
- 5:04The host off the air, she she said.
- 5:07So who's going to win the World Series?
- 5:09And I just sat there for like 30 seconds and she was like, oh,
- 5:12did you hear me? I was like, yeah, I was just
- 5:14thinking, and I don't even know what to say.
- 5:16Like I don't. It would be easy.
- 5:18I ended up saying, I guess the Brewers and I just went on this
- 5:21whole tirade about how nobody's giving them enough credit, but
- 5:24I'm not like sure that they're going to end up in the World
- 5:27Series or anything. It it seems like who's going to
- 5:31get hot at the right time? Are the Brewers going to hold
- 5:33everything together or like Woodruff and Miss Rafsky going
- 5:36to fall apart and then they don't have a playoff rotation?
- 5:38And then they're both depends not as deep.
- 5:40With those injuries and McGill and and Shelby Miller, you could
- 5:44see how they could lose an NLDS too.
- 5:46So and then you go to the AL side and like anybody who looks
- 5:50good, the Blue Jays, then you can come up with the reasons why
- 5:53they could fall apart. And I ended up ranking the
- 5:56Yankees as the top team in the American.
- 5:58And I agree with. You took series with the Astros
- 6:01and the Blue Jays last week, but would anybody be surprised if
- 6:03the Yankees got swept in the playoffs?
- 6:05Absolutely not. So it's just it's really, really
- 6:09fun. All the different, you know,
- 6:12scenarios to come up with. Like you look at the Tigers have
- 6:16an 8 1/2 game lead. They don't look good right now.
- 6:18They just don't look good at all.
- 6:20So it's no matter where you look.
- 6:22And I'm looking at the Cubs right now that lost three in a
- 6:24row to the bats and the Brave, they have no shots before that,
- 6:28they looked really good for a second.
- 6:29And if Kyle Tucker is healthy and, say, Suzuki remembers how
- 6:34to hit home runs, all of a sudden now the Cubs are
- 6:36formidable. So it's, yeah, you can bounce
- 6:40around team to team to team and just come up with reasons why
- 6:43they they might get swept or reasons why they could win the
- 6:45World Series. Speaking of the Cubs, let's have
- 6:47our weekly conversation on the team you root for in the team
- 6:50most important here in the state of Iowa.
- 6:53Those Chicago Cubs now are looking for a new closer with
- 6:55Plancia on the IL Look, he hasn't been the same guy for a
- 6:58while and we've been talking about him and the issues that
- 7:01have been there. A fastball velocity down a tick,
- 7:03but more importantly, people been hitting it at a lot higher
- 7:06rate than what we we've seen. Well, now we've got something
- 7:09and now we see that he's on the IL with that shoulder strain in
- 7:13the interim, who do you like in the back end of that bullpen and
- 7:16Palencia hope of him coming back and regaining that role with
- 7:20starting to get into a little bit of a day's crunch at this
- 7:22point. Yeah, Brad Keller, it's up.
- 7:25Has to be Thielbar and Keller both seem pretty reliable.
- 7:29Past that, nobody much really is right now.
- 7:32It's like we just talked about almost everybody has bulletin
- 7:36issues too. I want I think Palencia needed
- 7:40to kind of take a beat. So the injuries kind of good
- 7:43timing there. So where they don't have to
- 7:45publicly demote him sometimes that Rex guys confidence.
- 7:48He needed to to be sat down for a little bit anyway.
- 7:52So maybe this is, you know, kind of a happy accident.
- 7:55And, and if he comes back and he looks like the guy that he was
- 7:58before, what, the middle of August or so before, and that
- 8:01the main thing, like you said, is, is that he was starting to
- 8:05get hit. And he's always going to look
- 8:08like he's overthrowing. He's always going to throw a lot
- 8:11of balls and make you worried that he's going to walk in a
- 8:13run. But the problem now is the
- 8:15giving up the home runs and getting hit hard that that is
- 8:18something that just can't happen.
- 8:20So maybe after he's sat for a couple weeks, he can get it
- 8:24back. I'm not confident in that.
- 8:26But hey, it's a it's a reliever. So when are you ever really
- 8:30confident in relievers anymore? Yeah, one name he didn't say,
- 8:33Matt. And I'm not saying he should be
- 8:35the closer, but I kind of like Andrew Kittridge a little bit
- 8:38since he's come over from Baltimore.
- 8:39Keller's the guy. I agree with you wholeheartedly.
- 8:41But Kittridge, I think he's had one bad outing, then the next,
- 8:45then his next appearance, he threw an Immaculate inning, if
- 8:47memory serves. Yeah, he's I should have
- 8:51included him with with Theo Bar as like kind of the bridge to
- 8:55Keller, or at least what it should be, because he's been
- 8:57really good. Theo Bar has been good.
- 9:00Pomeranes for the most part has been good, but there's been some
- 9:02shakiness there. Porter Hodge actually didn't
- 9:05look that bad last outing, and we know that he has talent as
- 9:08well. So it's Craig Counsel.
- 9:11Just have fun mixing and matching and trying to come up
- 9:13with the formula. Yeah, No, let me ask about Kyle
- 9:16Tucker real quick because you know, when you give up Cam Smith
- 9:19and everything that comes along, you know, with his ceiling, I
- 9:24guess. And we certainly seen both.
- 9:25He's rookie, for crying out loud, and a young one at that.
- 9:29But so I thought that there was going to be pressure on on Cubs
- 9:31management to to and ownership, I guess more importantly, to
- 9:35resign Kyle Tucker. I don't think they will.
- 9:37I don't think that there's, I mean, I'm sure they would like
- 9:40to, but they've obviously got their price point and if they
- 9:43get past that, I don't think that they'll blink because
- 9:46knowing what's down here and knowing Casey, I think I've I've
- 9:49said it before the deadline, I think he's the heir apparent and
- 9:53I still believe that to this point.
- 9:54I don't think Tucker's a Cub next year.
- 9:56Obviously it's a better topic for the offseason, but your
- 9:59thoughts? The Cubs have been operating as
- 10:02an upper middle market team for the past several years, and I
- 10:06think that that's exactly where Tom Ricketts wants them to be,
- 10:09unfortunately. So instead of acting like a mega
- 10:12market team, like the Yankees are met for Dodgers, which the
- 10:15Cubs should be operating at that level, but they're just not.
- 10:18And I don't think that Ricketts wants to for whatever reason.
- 10:21So, yeah, like Dansby Swanson's contract is probably going to be
- 10:25one of the bigger ones that they give out during Jet lawyers
- 10:28entire tenure. I, I, Tucker's probably going to
- 10:32get more than that. I don't think he's going to get
- 10:34up to over like 500 million at all.
- 10:36I don't think he's going to get bad.
- 10:38I probably in the three hundreds, but I don't think the
- 10:40Cubs are going to go into the three hundreds.
- 10:42So, yeah, I think it's walking time.
- 10:45And up until that last week before he got hurt, when he got
- 10:50hot again, I, it didn't look like it was a good marriage
- 10:53anyway. He'd been struggling like the
- 10:55the longest, the longest slump of his career.
- 11:00But I I do think that he's a very, very good player who does
- 11:04deserve a big contract. I just don't think the Cubs are
- 11:07going to be the team that gives it to him.
- 11:09So before the season began, Ken talked me into the Texas Rangers
- 11:13and I invested. And I think you like the.
- 11:15Is it always my? Fault.
- 11:16Well, I got to blame you every once in a while.
- 11:19Like I know your password. On your app.
- 11:21That's true. He didn't twist my arm, that is
- 11:23for sure. But you sold a good case.
- 11:25I don't know how many times this year we throw in dirt on this
- 11:28team hanging around and they've pulled themselves out now five
- 11:31games above 5. They win.
- 11:32I want full credit by. The way you will get that full
- 11:34credit, absolutely. This Rangers team, you know
- 11:37Seeger had have an aftermath because it's just the way the
- 11:39season's going. But he's going to be back here
- 11:41pretty soon. Suddenly the Rangers and what we
- 11:44talked about at the top, a wide open American League.
- 11:47Are there crazier things that can happen?
- 11:49The Texas with all that pitching, gets hot.
- 11:52They absolutely could if they get healthy and and make the
- 11:56playoffs, which is like Nathan Duvaldi's out for the season,
- 12:00but like Tyler Molly on the way back, Marcus Simeon, Adolis
- 12:04Garcia, as you mentioned, Corey Seeger, all her.
- 12:07If they get all those guys back and they get to the postseason,
- 12:10they could be dangerous there. The Grom needs to hold up and
- 12:14that's the one of the biggest question marks for me last week
- 12:19for CBS Sports HQ, they asked me to pick the most important
- 12:23pitcher in baseball for the rest of the season.
- 12:24And I said Jacob the Grom because the Rangers need him to
- 12:29continue to pitch like an ace as he has been doing.
- 12:32But he's now at 155 2/3 inning. He hadn't thrown over 100.
- 12:36He didn't thrown 100 since 2019 coming off Tommy John surgery.
- 12:41I know it came back late last year.
- 12:42So it's not like it was, you know, he missed all of last
- 12:45year. So he's had a little bit of
- 12:46recovery time. But man, it feels like we're
- 12:48pushing the limit with him right now.
- 12:50But if he holds up, they've got Merrill Kelly now, like I said,
- 12:54Tyler, Molly on the comeback trail.
- 12:55They could piece together a nice rotation for the playoffs.
- 12:58They have plenty of offensive players who could get really,
- 13:02really hot, assuming they all get healthy enough.
- 13:05And then Bruce Bocci has like, bullpen superpowers in the
- 13:08playoffs. Oh yeah, it they could well be
- 13:11very, very dangerous. There's no question about that.
- 13:14Oh my gosh, it can be fascinating.
- 13:16And I, I'd put Bochy and there's a lot of good managers right
- 13:20now, you know, that look as though they're headed to the
- 13:22playoffs, but Bochy's on anybody's list.
- 13:25I mean, that this guy is an elite manager.
- 13:27Who did they finish up with? Texas.
- 13:29I know that Seattle finishes up with the Dodgers, yours Texas's
- 13:35last 9-3 with Miami, three with your twins, Trent and then three
- 13:39in Cleveland. That's pretty good.
- 13:41Pretty good season will be over by then.
- 13:43Probably would be it's. It's OK, but.
- 13:45The Rangers now, they beat the Brewers last night and they just
- 13:47took two or three from the Astros.
- 13:49They're in the middle of a gauntlet here because they have
- 13:51two more against the Brewers. Then they're at meds and at
- 13:53Astros. If they emerge, if they emerge
- 13:55from that, though, you know, then like you just said,
- 13:59Marlins, Twins at home, then at Cleveland, who's not going to
- 14:02have anything left to play for it this next week and 1/2 is
- 14:06going to tell us a lot. No doubt what we go through.
- 14:11Seattle's always been such an intriguing team.
- 14:12They hold that final wild card spot at that.
- 14:15At this point in the season. The Seattle team, like they're
- 14:19pitching, got some young stars. Of course, what they got with
- 14:23Cal Raleigh throughout the course of this season is he.
- 14:25Got No 5153? Ridiculous. 53, yeah.
- 14:29So the Seattle team, I mean, it's wide open again.
- 14:33I don't know. What do you think of them and
- 14:35their chances come playoff time? They are completely unreliable,
- 14:39but they have very, very good upside.
- 14:42Like it's they were playing so, so, so terribly, but then they
- 14:46outscored the Braves like 28 to 4 in the last two games in that
- 14:50Braves series. They beat the Cardinals last
- 14:52night. Luis Castillo had been really,
- 14:55really awful recently, but had a good outing.
- 14:57If they got Logan Gilbert, George Kirby right, which for
- 15:02most of the year, and then they've got Woo Woo at the top.
- 15:05Then those other 3, you could see them being a really, really
- 15:09good playoff rotation. And then they've got the pieces
- 15:12on offense because to to Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez and
- 15:15Randy Rosarina, they added Josh Taylor and he was far as in
- 15:18front of the trade deadline. That's five really, really good
- 15:22hitters. That's a great offense.
- 15:24It can be at least a ballpark that suppresses offense, but you
- 15:29know, they can hit. So it's it's going to be
- 15:33interesting to see. I could see them falling on
- 15:35their face and missing the playoffs by like 5 games and I
- 15:37could see them going all the way to the World Series.
- 15:39It's obviously it will probably be somewhere in the middle, but
- 15:44they're very, very intriguing, much like the Rangers.
- 15:47Giants out of it. I I am inclined to say yes.
- 15:52I think they were just too hot for a quick second there where
- 15:57they went three out. Man three's workable.
- 16:02I, I don't, I don't think they will make it.
- 16:04I I think the Mets are much better but man 3's workable.
- 16:08It looks as though if there is a team on the other, if there is a
- 16:12team on the outside of the playoffs, a wild card team, it
- 16:15has to be Texas has to be the right answer, right?
- 16:18Absolutely. Yeah, Yeah.
- 16:20The Reds look at. The National League side and I
- 16:22know the Giants, Red Snow, Diamondbacks, only four and half
- 16:25out. Cardinals, only four and a half
- 16:26out. Wow, I know it.
- 16:28All those teams, you go to the AL, I just the Guardians are hot
- 16:32again, but I just you feel like another one of those awful
- 16:35stretches is right around the corner.
- 16:37The Royals just had too many injuries and on the pitching
- 16:40staff so. They'll win 84 games and finish
- 16:43a couple of games out. Yeah, it's the 12.
- 16:46In all likelihood, it's the 12 teams in playoff position.
- 16:48Right now, I think you're right. Breaks through that force field,
- 16:51then it's the Rangers. Yeah, I think you're right.
- 16:53Want to take you all the way back to the beginning of the
- 16:54season. My final thing for you, Torpedo
- 16:56bats, they're still around. But you know, as we think back
- 17:01upon that, why was it such a big deal?
- 17:04And then has there been any studies done to see why there
- 17:08was that onslaught? It was the Yankees hit all the
- 17:09home runs in that game, the Brewers, Yankees, Brewers.
- 17:12I remember who it was when. The Brewers.
- 17:14The Brewers started O and four and got their teeth kicked down.
- 17:17Yeah, it's a long season, man. I part of it I think was it was
- 17:22the Yankees. Everything's always in it.
- 17:25And it was the start of the season.
- 17:26It wasn't like in the middle of the season, the series where the
- 17:29Yankees went crazy offensively. It was the very first series.
- 17:32It was the Yankees. It was these bats that look
- 17:35weird and people hadn't talked about much and it just took off.
- 17:38But I mean, remember, Adler Rushman had tried one like two
- 17:42or two or three years ago and there were a lot of other guys
- 17:45around baseball who were like Dansby sponsor.
- 17:47The Cubs, I think, started using one last year.
- 17:50So it's it was just one of those things where it was kind of a
- 17:53perfect storm where, you know, baseball just started.
- 17:56The Yankees went crazy. And it's easy for a viral moment
- 18:00to happen when somebody online, hey, the Yankees are using these
- 18:03bats, shouldn't these be illegal?
- 18:05And then it takes on takes on a life of its own.
- 18:07Yeah, it was the Brewers in Tampa Bay, and Tampa Bay was
- 18:10hitting all. Nobody would have cared because
- 18:11nobody would have noticed. Yep.
- 18:13Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com, CBSSports.com.
- 18:16He writes on baseball, he see him on CBS HQ, etcetera.
- 18:20He's with us every single week right through the World Series.
- 18:23Matt, thanks for doing this as always, brother, Appreciate it.
- 18:25Have a good week. All right, take care.
- 18:27Yeah. Good to talk to you, Matt
- 18:28Snyder, our weekly check in on MLB.
- 18:32That's where I will be tonight. You will be.
- 18:36What are you going to? Watch.
- 18:37There's nothing on not that I need to twist my arm to watch.
- 18:40Baseball, a lot of baseball. I'll be watching a Little League
- 18:42action down in Norwalk tonight at the Tigers.
- 18:45Make the trip South will be facing Urbandale this evening.
- 18:48That will be IS. That a tough trip.
- 18:50It's. You know it's a road trip.
- 18:51Sure. So last night quick story for
- 18:54you what flip it on the game and Jack is learning about home
- 18:58field advantage. So we've had the back and forth.
- 19:00The girls are on the Vikings. The boys are on the Bears and
- 19:03when he saw the opening shot before they went to bucket,
- 19:07Aikman of the Bears got home field advantage.
- 19:11He thinks it's the biggest thing in the world.
- 19:13And he went to bed. It was 17, six and he dreamed of
- 19:16a big Bears victory. And then first thing in the
- 19:18morning, we want to watch the highlights.
- 19:20Yeah, to just let him down before he watched the
- 19:22highlights. I said it didn't go well, but he
- 19:24still wanted to watch him. Yeah, we're making our little
- 19:26football fan and I couldn't be more excited.
- 19:28Well, I saw the picture of his bear's gear last night.
- 19:32Man, he is going to have a rough life.
- 19:33He is sorry buddy. He's.
- 19:34Going to be a Hawkeye fan, too. Yeah, Kirk Fern still be
- 19:37coaching when he's in college, probably.
- 19:40I'll take your time out. Come back, We'll talk about the
- 19:42Kansas City Chiefs that stinking quarterback Patrick Mahomes
- 19:48used. To be quarterback and what he
- 19:49used in college. Yeah, he probably will be be my
- 19:52nightmare Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 19:55I'm Miller and Condon Welcome back Iowa sports Radio Network
- 19:58flagship here at Des Moines sports station one O 6.3 KX&O
- 20:04still to come this hour trends plays of the day Mr. Monday
- 20:07night put one in the win column last night Circa sports sponsors
- 20:10those coming up here at about 01520 minutes or thereabouts
- 20:14want the audience to know just because the even good.
- 20:17Times are bad times. We talk about the Chiefs last
- 20:20place team in the AFC West notwithstanding, we're still
- 20:22going to talk talk about them. Here's Nick Athan,
- 20:24chiefsplitz.com, to talk. Old old intro.
- 20:29That I've been waiting for that one for about 8-9 years now
- 20:32brother. Good to talk to you.
- 20:33There you go. Nine straight seasons.
- 20:36It's all good. It's just a game, right?
- 20:38They're looking up at everybody in the AFC West and I couldn't
- 20:41be happier except for one thing. Except for one thing.
- 20:46You know what drove me nuts the other day?
- 20:47And and because I'm anxious to see where it goes.
- 20:50Patrick Mahomes, instead of running out of bounds because
- 20:54the DB had pulled up, wasn't going to touch him because he
- 20:56knows if he does, he's got 15 yards coming against him.
- 20:59That flag is going to fly. And Mahomes decides to lay a
- 21:02lick on that guy who was who was pulled up and not expecting it.
- 21:06What's going to happen the first time that a DB decides in the
- 21:10back of his mind remembers what Mahomes did the last time he was
- 21:13in that spot? Is the flag going to come?
- 21:17I mean, if you're ADB, how do you play against 15 in that
- 21:20respect? Yeah, you know what I you know,
- 21:23first of all, kudos to the password for knowing how to lay
- 21:26the pads down. OK.
- 21:27Number two, I was surprised by the uproar over it.
- 21:31But you're right, you know, the the what's to prevent a
- 21:34quarterback going after the quarterback?
- 21:36I mean, the rules are to protect the quarterback at all costs.
- 21:39Now, if the quarterback wants to lay the hit there, the league
- 21:42loves it. I mean, that's entertainment,
- 21:43that's theater. But at some point, you know, the
- 21:47reverse is going to happen and people are going to say, well,
- 21:49why? And I hope they just don't look
- 21:51at it just as Catherine Holmes is the only quarterback that
- 21:53does that. There's there's a few others
- 21:55that have done it. So it's like, you know, I think
- 21:58everybody's just nitpicking on the Chiefs because they lost.
- 22:00That's all I think it is. So when you look at this game,
- 22:04Chargers have battled them before.
- 22:06We've seen good matchups, we've seen upsets in this game before,
- 22:08so you don't want to overreact to a divisional game.
- 22:11What was the most concerning thing, though?
- 22:13You're a pretty optimistic guy in general, Nick, but was there
- 22:16something that's kind of been sticking to your mind here the
- 22:18last four days? You know, I think the thing that
- 22:22that makes me the most angry about the game is the Chiefs
- 22:25decided to travel on on Wednesday instead of Tuesday
- 22:28like the Chargers did. I think they needed the extra
- 22:31day's rest. I think they were jet lagged.
- 22:32I think they were flat. Obviously losing, you know,
- 22:35Xavier Worthy 3 plays in when he makes up about 45% of your
- 22:40offensive, you know, situation, and that's using him as a
- 22:43receiver, a decoy, a runner. I mean, all sorts of things run
- 22:46through Xavier Worthy. So, you know, he just didn't
- 22:49adjust very well. They did play better in the
- 22:51second-half offensively, you know, missing, I mean,
- 22:54opportunities in the, you know, to score touchdowns, how to
- 22:57settle for field goals. But I thought to me, the biggest
- 22:59thing that I was upset about was they just didn't have any
- 23:03passion, especially in that first half.
- 23:05And that shocked me. After everything you, the three
- 23:09of us have talked about since, that's your pro loss.
- 23:11They're going to come out with health fury in their in their
- 23:14hearts and minds and bodies. They laid an egg.
- 23:18Yeah, they did. Conversely, the Chargers,
- 23:21Quentin Johnson looked like he was headed toward being a bust.
- 23:24He had a really good opening night lad.
- 23:26Mcconkey. I mean, he's going to.
- 23:28I think he's going to be a star in the league.
- 23:29Keenan Allen. Still Keenan Allen.
- 23:31But I want to ask you about Justin Herbert, who really got
- 23:33my attention with the three touchdown passes.
- 23:36I thought he played very well. Are the Chargers now the team to
- 23:41fear most in the West in your mind?
- 23:45Well, I'm going to, you know, I've been, I've been on Justin
- 23:47Herbert just as much as you have.
- 23:49And I thought that was the best game he played in the NFL from
- 23:53the from the first quarter to the fourth quarter, he was on.
- 23:56He had a few low periods. He had a couple of stacks.
- 23:59You know, he didn't have a turnover.
- 24:01He didn't make any mistakes. I thought he was terrific.
- 24:04And I think the charges overall are, are a good team and a
- 24:07better team. But you know, I, you know, I'm
- 24:11going to be honest with this, the Denver Broncos are, I think
- 24:15the best team in the division right now.
- 24:16Bonex was awful. Bonex was awful man.
- 24:19OK, let me finish. Let me finish.
- 24:21Defensively, they're they're the best.
- 24:23There's nobody better. Benita.
- 24:25I would have given my, you know, my my entire life salary to have
- 24:30him on a Chief's roster. I think Shantay has been true,
- 24:33but the problem is Bo Nick. So if Bo Nick plays like he did
- 24:38against the good team, that defense isn't going to be able
- 24:41to save him. But I kind of expected, I
- 24:45expected him to struggle a little bit early just because he
- 24:48had a great rookie year. You know, expectations are high.
- 24:52I mean, a lot of people are picking the Broncos going so,
- 24:56and again, I think it's 1/2. I think it's Chiefs, Broncos,
- 25:00Chargers, Raiders still, you know, but there's not going to
- 25:05be a team that's going to go 5 and one in the AFC West or six.
- 25:07No, it's not going to happen. So four and two with a
- 25:11tiebreaker is probably going to win it in the division this year
- 25:14because I think these games are all going to be close.
- 25:17But you know, Bonex, hey, hopefully he steps up.
- 25:22I want the division to be as competitive as possible.
- 25:24But Justin Herbert really surprised me.
- 25:26The fact that he could play that well for four quarters and then
- 25:29you say, well, where the heck has this been in the post
- 25:31season? He won a big game.
- 25:33He's now two and two and nine against the Chiefs and that's a
- 25:37start. So kudos to him and he deserves
- 25:39the props. He was the best player on that
- 25:41field. Travis Kelsey had a touchdown,
- 25:44nearly had another if he would have taken another step and kept
- 25:46going with Kelsey retooling the body a little bit, looks a
- 25:52little different in his 13th season, trying to try to keep
- 25:55that tread off the tires right as he makes his way through
- 25:57potentially his final year. What'd you see from him and your
- 26:00thoughts of what he's going to be throughout the course of this
- 26:02year? You know, I thought I was
- 26:06impressed with Travis, that touchdown path, even though it
- 26:09was wide open, he still had to turn The Jets on a little bit,
- 26:11beat the corner, and I didn't know if he was going to get
- 26:13there. And then he displayed that.
- 26:16I love the fact that he got into Juan Taylor's grill and tapped
- 26:19him on the help instead of wake up.
- 26:21You know, that to me was very impressive because John Taylor
- 26:25just isn't isn't the guy and he isn't getting it and just it's
- 26:28not a good he's not a good player for the Chiefs.
- 26:30But Travis Kelsey, I thought he did well.
- 26:32He probably obviously felt bad for running into Xavier Worthy,
- 26:35though. I don't I can't say that was his
- 26:36fault, but he looks good to me. He's looked good in the
- 26:40offseason. He's looked good in training
- 26:42camp. He looked good in the one three
- 26:43season game where he got some reps and I thought he played
- 26:47really well. And so they're going to count on
- 26:49him and they're going to be it's going to be Patrick and Travis.
- 26:52And again, you're right, he should have he should have kept
- 26:54going and he would have had two touchdowns.
- 26:56And maybe it's a different outcome in the football game,
- 26:58but I was impressed with, you know, with Travis being that age
- 27:04to still be that productive. Speaking of of of Kelsey, there
- 27:07was there was a play in the game and it wasn't his fault.
- 27:10I mean, Tart, I think the guy's name tier Tart or something like
- 27:13that. Yeah.
- 27:14How was he not kicked out? What what?
- 27:16What am I missing here? He threw a punch and hit Kelsey
- 27:19square in the face, knocked him over.
- 27:21And I think he really did. I don't think it was
- 27:22embellished, maybe a little bit, but Tart flat out cold cocked
- 27:25him. Why was he not tossed?
- 27:28I don't know. You know, the NFL needs to make
- 27:30up their mind to be open hand 5th.
- 27:32I mean, come on. Is that what they called it?
- 27:35Yeah, Oh, they called it because it wasn't a 5th, that it wasn't
- 27:39a disqualification. And Troy Vincent, who does not
- 27:43like the chief, he makes these ruling immediately from, you
- 27:47know, Park Ave. And the relay message was no,
- 27:53it's no, it's no ejection. And of course, we didn't have
- 27:57the best officiating. That didn't help either.
- 28:00That was a poorly officiated game on both sides, I thought.
- 28:04But you know, it doesn't make any sense.
- 28:06And and the fact that he hasn't been suspended as of today.
- 28:09He's got to be fined, He's going to be fined.
- 28:11I'll be shocked if he's going to.
- 28:12Be fine big time. But I think, you know, if
- 28:14they're serious, they spent they had all these reps, all these
- 28:17officials come to all the training camps and say, listen,
- 28:20the NFL has made it an idiot that they're not going to have
- 28:23players fitting, cussing, hitting, pushing, you know, none
- 28:28of this stuff. We're going to be prime, you
- 28:30know, you know, best behavior if we're going to lead by example
- 28:34and they come out in the first instance.
- 28:36Well, second, if you look at what Carter did, you know,
- 28:38opening night. But in this instance, I mean,
- 28:41there's no reason he shouldn't have been injected.
- 28:43And it was huge for the Chiefs. He thought he batted down a
- 28:46would be two point version. He batted down a screen pass
- 28:49that probably would have been a touchdown.
- 28:51You know, so that happened after that incident.
- 28:53But Andy Reid was Andy Reid was pissed yesterday.
- 28:56I don't normally see Andy Reid get that upset, but he was very
- 29:00upset with the fact that he wasn't ejected.
- 29:02And as he said, you know, I don't have that much money to
- 29:06say any more about it because the league fines these coaches
- 29:08for having an opinion was also ridiculous.
- 29:11So not a good, not a good look by officiating.
- 29:14I think in the opening weekend, there were a lot of games on
- 29:17Sunday, too. There were some questionable
- 29:19calls and penalties. And it's just, I just don't want
- 29:23this to be a year of that again. Last year was bad enough.
- 29:26Let's turn the page to this week.
- 29:28It's Philadelphia. I thought Philly played a very
- 29:33vanilla game on Thursday night. Didn't seem like they really had
- 29:36to dig deep into the bag of tricks and maybe they needed to.
- 29:39But regardless, they got the win and move on.
- 29:41Of course, Super Bowl from a year ago going to have that
- 29:43narrative. That's going to be out there.
- 29:46Tough game here and very quickly staring in the face of oh, and
- 29:49two, if you don't get it in your reading company, they've been
- 29:52great in these kind of spots. You have to feel good about that
- 29:54part of it. But this is a really talented
- 29:56Philadelphia team. Well, I think there's a couple
- 29:59of things going in the Chief's way.
- 30:01One, it's the home owner, B, they don't have to travel 12
- 30:03hours to play a football game. But I think Andy Reid, again,
- 30:07Andy Reid's been pissed off. He was pissed after the game.
- 30:10He was pissed the fact that he had to talk to the media before
- 30:12the game. I mean, all these things that
- 30:14took place. And I think the players got the
- 30:17message. And it's my understanding that
- 30:19Patrick Lavon Mahomes, the second was pretty high rate on
- 30:23the plane ride home and had a lot of conversation.
- 30:25And I think they're going to come out motivated.
- 30:27I think they're going to play well.
- 30:28It's a must win there. They have to win this game.
- 30:31You know, they got the Giants my Sunday Night Football week
- 30:35later. Then they get the Ravens at home
- 30:38and the Ravens are going to either be really good at that
- 30:40point or they're still going to be realized that embarrassing
- 30:42loss against the Buffalo Bills. But this is a must win for the
- 30:46Chiefs. I expect them to come out with
- 30:47energy. I expect them to play well.
- 30:50I make them a slight favorite only because they're home.
- 30:54And I think you guys want to make a statement that, you know,
- 30:57last week's embarrassment loss and to the Chargers was just
- 31:00nothing more than that, that the dynasty is still intact.
- 31:04Vegas also made them a slight favorite point and a half.
- 31:07The Chiefs favored. Oh, did they?
- 31:08Yeah, at the at the Eagles. Nick, great stuff.
- 31:11So before we let you go, chiefsplitz.com, the regular
- 31:14season is here. Are you guys now
- 31:15dailycontent@chiefsplitz.com? Yeah, we, we post articles, we
- 31:20do our podcast four days a week. I've also opened up a shop if
- 31:24you're looking for Chiefs memorabilia.
- 31:26Memorabilia. I am.
- 31:28I am selling my collection of 50 years.
- 31:31How about that? I know I got 1000.
- 31:34Well, I haven't posted them all yet, but I got about 1000 pieces
- 31:36that I'm selling. I've had them long enough to
- 31:38find other people get a chance to have some of the some of the
- 31:42history from the Super Bowl 4 to the current guys.
- 31:44How about that, that underground vault Speaking of history, and
- 31:48we haven't talked to you because we have, Mitch, every every day
- 31:50during the month of August. You have.
- 31:52So how did the The public can't get down there, can they?
- 31:57The public can anybody can get down there.
- 31:58I used to own a delivery company back in the 30 years ago, 20
- 32:01years ago, and a lot of my clients were in The Cave and
- 32:05it's a nasty, nasty little tunnel.
- 32:08It goes from, it goes for about a mile and a half, all sorts of
- 32:11directions. You can get lost.
- 32:14It's weird because it's like it's definitely, it's
- 32:16underground. But yeah, I mean, I've been to
- 32:19about, I don't know, maybe 20 or 30 businesses in there.
- 32:23And it's just it's it's cold and you can't get it.
- 32:26You can't get into the buildings themselves, but you can get into
- 32:30the tunnel pretty much at any time.
- 32:32And it's it's a fascinating place.
- 32:34And in a point of history, when Derek Thomas was up for his
- 32:39first contract negotiation, Carl Peterson took Lee Steinberg down
- 32:43to that chief's cave and into that office and negotiated his
- 32:48first contract extension or his first contract, I'm sorry.
- 32:52And Stanberg to this day will tell you the story about he
- 32:55didn't know what to expect. But they picked him up with
- 32:58Derek and they went into this cave and they sat there in that
- 33:01room until they negotiated a contract.
- 33:03It was one of the biggest takeaways from watching the
- 33:05Kingdom. I was just blown away.
- 33:07AI didn't know it existed. And the entire history of the
- 33:10Kansas City Chiefs organization from when they started in
- 33:13Dallas, how they got from Dallas to Kansas City.
- 33:16It's fascinating. It really is, Nick.
- 33:17Good stuff, brother. Chiefs blitz.com.
- 33:19Chiefs blitz.com. Thank you, Nick Athan.
- 33:22We'll grab you next week. Thanks bud.
- 33:24All right, Sounds good. Thanks for having.
- 33:25Me on guys appreciate it yeah, good to talk to you Nick Athan
- 33:28on the chiefs O and two can you see it?
- 33:32Yeah, I can too. Oh absolutely, I can absolutely
- 33:35see it Chargers they play the Raiders.
- 33:38We have a double dip next Monday.
- 33:40We do a true double head. Yes, they're not on top of each
- 33:42other. Yes, 6:00 and 9:00, right?
- 33:44Yes. So maybe a little overlap there,
- 33:47but that's OK. This the first driver too, maybe
- 33:49of that Raiders Chargers game. But Bucks, Texans, I like that
- 33:53game beforehand. Where will Buck and Aikman?
- 33:55Be great question. At the on the ABC because ABC's
- 33:59got the early game tap at Houston.
- 34:01So that would be my anticipation.
- 34:03With you, I think that's where. Did you watch any manicast?
- 34:07No, I did not. Game matter too much.
- 34:09Yeah, I'm with you. It was fascinating.
- 34:12Maybe next week. Yep, maybe.
- 34:15Will the Manicast do both games? Oh yeah, I mean, how can they
- 34:20just do one right? It could be a late night for Eli
- 34:23out in the East Coast. He'll be all right.
- 34:25He will be like those Michigan State fans.
- 34:27He's. How about that?
- 34:28Can play about their 11:00 PM kick off against the.
- 34:31Hustle. Look at it.
- 34:33Maybe Michigan State this week, it might be Iowa coming up,
- 34:35right? Everybody's going to get it,
- 34:37Clone fans. You're going to get it too,
- 34:39Arizona. It's coming.
- 34:42Now, the USC game has already been announced for the kickoff.
- 34:44Has it this year. Yes, that is a 2:00 central time
- 34:47kickoff noon Pacific that was announced when these schedules
- 34:51came out really way back in May, so 2.
- 34:53O'clock 2:00 our time that's. Odd isn't?
- 34:55Who's got it, do you know? Don't think that was announced,
- 34:58but it was announced a 2:00 kickoff.
- 35:00All right, all right, we'll take a time out.
- 35:02Trent's plays of the day are coming up next.
- 35:05Miller and Condon talking sports with you.

- 35:29He's got to have, I don't know, a dozen sponsors.
- 35:32Good for him that pop up in the middle of that.

- 35:37Chicago. But he will join us tomorrow at
- 35:40just to start, hour number two, Kate Horton, Spencer Strider
- 35:44tonight, Cubs, Braves. What are you betting?

- 35:56weekend, I'm not going to root any.

- 36:01Real soccer. Both.
- 36:02Both. Yeah.
- 36:03West Ham, maybe, it might be my squad.
- 36:05Yeah, maybe. I don't know, Tottenham.
- 36:08You've just had enough. Yeah, Hawks did it to you.
- 36:10The Bears if they drove the final nail.
- 36:12Into the sport. It's September 9th.
- 36:16Yeah, it's so much fun, isn't it?
- 36:18It's over. Not over my betting though.
- 36:21My bank. My bank, Mr. Monday night what
- 36:24it O There you go, the rest. Of the picks didn't go very
- 36:26well. Mr. Monday night was on on.

- 36:32Let's start there tonight. Seattle, Golden State.
- 36:35What is the What is the regular season over this week?
- 36:38It's coming up. Don't know the exact date, but
- 36:40it's coming up. We're going to grab the points.
- 36:41Give me the Valkyries plus the 6 1/2 in that one.
- 36:45To baseball we go. I'm going to start with my lone
- 36:48favorite of the evening, that is the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 36:50No starter announced. Could be Hauser this night.
- 36:53No announced starter yet. I'll meet Lay though the -130
- 36:55against the White Sox this evening after the Twins explode
- 36:59for 12 runs last night. They're not going to do that two
- 37:02times in a row. Angels plus one O 5 In that one,
- 37:05it'll be Kyle Hendricks against Zebby Matthews.
- 37:07Talk about two guys that do it differently.
- 37:09Those are definitely. Hendricks, in his final starts
- 37:12of his Major League career dwindling, seems to be right.
- 37:15This has to be it. Going to grab the Reds, they
- 37:17jump out to a three nothing lead last night home for no it wasn't
- 37:20home free. We'll go back to the well again
- 37:22with the Reds this evening, plus 165 against Mitch King coming
- 37:26off the IL for the second time this season.
- 37:29We'll see if he can do it again. Only two starts since he had
- 37:32that initial injury so far, and then I'm going to grab the
- 37:35Cardinals. We mentioned the inconsistency
- 37:37of Seattle. Liberator's been OK.
- 37:40Yeah, Kirby's been inconsistent. Consistent and that goes that
- 37:43direction. So we'll grab big money plus 183
- 37:47on that one. At Circa you shop at some of the
- 37:50other shops you might get 1 + 6165.
- 37:54Not the case at Circle plus 180. Three.
- 37:57All right, so your dogs, just to recap, you're taking the Angels,
- 38:01yes, the Cardinals, correct? Reds.
- 38:06The Reds and your one favorite is Tampa over the White Sox.
- 38:10I mean it looks like 5 and O on paper to me.
- 38:12Smells like it to me, Trent. But if you've been watching my
- 38:14what? Go ahead and spend your money,
- 38:16no. Really.
- 38:16Yeah, that confident, yeah, last 30 days we're down 13 units, so.

- 38:34Okay, so every Saturday just getting down to those 5 picks,
- 38:38right? Get down to those 5 picks more
- 38:40difficult. Narrowing it down and you always
