- 0:07Detroit Tigers faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for a Sunday double header on July 3rd, 1960.
- 0:13The Tigers were managed by Jimmy Dykes and were an average team.
- 0:16They had finished in fourth or fifth place in the American League for six straight seasons.
- 0:20They added some new power to the team in 1960, however, adding Rocky Calabito and Norm Cash to the roster.
- 0:26The Yankees were on top of the American League with a 41-25 record entering this game under manager Casey Stengel,
- 0:32who was looking to lead them back to the World Series after a third-place finish in 1959.
- 0:36The Saudi recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto and Mel Allen.
- 0:42Well, the Yankees are in good shape as we approach the time when, according to the baseball axiom,
- 0:49the team in first place on the 4th of July is the team that is supposed to be there
- 0:54when the last game of the season has been played.
- 0:57That is held true in more cases than not, however, it is not something in which you can always bet all of your possessions.
- 1:04But it's a nice place to be any time, and the Yankees are substantially better off than they were a year ago at this time
- 1:10and look to be really coming on as of right now.
- 1:14With the lineups being exchanged, let's take a look and see what the batting orders will be.
- 1:18For the Detroit Tigers, Eddie Yost leads off at third base, Frank Bowling at second,
- 1:25Charlie Maxwell will be in left field, Cash at first base, Colavito in right, Al Kailin in center,
- 1:34Chico Fernandez at shortstop, Red Wilson catching, and Don Mosse pitching.
- 1:41For the Yanks, Richardson at second, Lopez in left, Maris in right field, Mantle in center,
- 1:50Skowron in first base, McDougall at third, Alston Howard will catch,
- 1:59and Cletus Boyer will be at shortstop as Tony Kubek rides the bench as we start this doubleheader, and Charlie will pitch.
- 2:14No need to tell you that the Yankees have taken the field as that roar goes up.
- 2:19The Sangal and Yanks exchange a few words at home plate before breaking up, and now we'll all rise for our national anthem.
- 3:19On the scoreboard in the American League, Kansas City and Boston just getting underway, Chicago and Baltimore likewise just starting,
- 3:30Cleveland and Washington have gone four innings, and at the end of four, it's all tied up 1-1.
- 3:37National League, the Giants and Phillies, Phillies won last night, making Tom Sheehan's woes a little more woeful.
- 3:46The Phillies and the Giants at the end of two, San Francisco leads 1-0.
- 3:51Los Angeles playing at Pittsburgh, that's just starting. Cincinnati at Chicago and Milwaukee at St. Louis, games that will start later.
- 4:00Following today's ballgame, the Yankees move down to Washington. They'll play a single game there tomorrow afternoon.
- 4:16Eddie Yost for the Detroit Tigers, moves into the batter's box, that's played on by Bill McKinley, gives home plate the Whistler treatment,
- 4:26and Bob Turley is set, and we're about set for the first pitch of the ballgame at two minutes after two.
- 4:37Turley's first pitch comes in a fastball for a foul strike.
- 4:42Red Barber is handling the play-by-play description of the first part of today's ballgame, and we'll be picking the redhead up in just a moment.
- 4:53Here is the next pitch, swung on and foul back up the screens, strike two. Red.
- 5:01Bill McKinley is back at the plate, Jim Warnock takes it first, next to Child Act is second, John Stevens is the third base on fire.
- 5:08Yankee infield, Schouen, Richardson, Boyer, and McDougal.
- 5:13The outfield is the same as it has been recently, this tremendous surge the Yankees let loose starting early in June.
- 5:19Lopez, Mantle, and Maris. Curveball is outside for Bryce.
- 5:25Now it is catching.
- 5:29The Yankees have four starters in the all-star game by the election of players in the league,
- 5:33Berra, Schouen, Maris, and Mantle.
- 5:37One-two pitch, curveball, foul strike three.
- 5:42Boy, you really bent that one.
- 5:45Yost is about to straighten up, keeps getting hit on the head, and the ball just goes round and round.
- 5:52Frank Bowling, hitting a two-forty-three.
- 5:56Outfield is one step to our left.
- 6:02The Yankees really won one heroically.
- 6:06They came as close to getting beat just as they could and still pulled it out.
- 6:09They had two men out in the last half of the ninth inning, got three runs to win it.
- 6:14And I was open to Detroit Dugout for a while, and I very carefully didn't bring up anything about yesterday.
- 6:21And I guarantee you that none of them volunteered anything about yesterday either.
- 6:27Passball is over for a strike, one-and-one.
- 6:30You know, when you think about it, great as it is to win one like that,
- 6:34the Yankees, of course, are just ecstatic, single out the game.
- 6:36Such a first one like that in a year and a half that we snatched back.
- 6:40It is just equally painful for the ball club that loses it.
- 6:46One-one pitch, passball fouled off.
- 6:51I had a pregame television show to do over in the Detroit Dugout, so I was over there half an hour before the show,
- 6:56and Dyches was sitting over there in the dugout, and I walked in, and he nodded.
- 7:01I've been friends a long time. I nodded right back, and that's all the conversation we had.
- 7:11That's how you end a broadcasting career, you know.
- 7:15I'd gone and said, hey, Jimmy, won that a game yesterday, huh?
- 7:24Two balls and two strikes.
- 7:27One man out, Frank Bowling, slender right-hand hitter, one of the top second baseman in the league.
- 7:32Charlie Pitches, called strike three, threw his slider right over the outside, hand high.
- 7:37Boom. That was a power pitch.
- 7:41So the first two fellows looked at third ones, and here's old Paw Paw, Charlie Maxwell.
- 7:48We call him old Paw Paw because his hometown is Paw Paw, Michigan.
- 7:59Maxwell standing right up on that plate, the left-hand batter, hitting two-eleven.
- 8:02He's the power man for them.
- 8:05The last time that the Tigers beat the Yankees ballgame, he did a home run-off during the win at Detroit, if you'll recall.
- 8:13Pitches inside, ball one.
- 8:18It's a beautiful July afternoon, and you've got a fine crowd here.
- 8:23Change of places high outside, ball two.
- 8:27Two balls, no strikes.
- 8:35Two-one-oh.
- 8:37Two men down, nobody on.
- 8:40Look at the first two batters, that's the story of the ballgame.
- 8:43Up to here, they play Maxwell around toward right.
- 8:48Fastball is outside, ball three.
- 8:54Three balls and no strikes.
- 9:02Charlie ready.
- 9:04Charlie behind now, three-and-oh.
- 9:10Delivers low inside, ball four.
- 9:12Maxwell drops the bat and drops out the first base.
- 9:14So Charlie starts out with two strikes, now comes up for the base on balls.
- 9:19And Norman Cash getting in.
- 9:2217-173.
- 9:38Cash steps out.
- 9:48That's in, hit it.
- 9:52Third ball is in there for a strike.
- 9:56It's a fellow they got from the White Sox.
- 10:02Well, they didn't get him from the White Sox.
- 10:03Cleveland got him from the White Sox, and they got him from Cleveland.
- 10:06Traded Steve Demeter to the Indians for it.
- 10:12Change of places, low inside, ball one.
- 10:14One-and-one.
- 10:16Cash started out in Pro Ball and 55 at Waterloo.
- 10:20The White Sox are part of 13 games in 58, just 250.
- 10:24Last year, they hit 240 in 58 games with Chicago.
- 10:34It's more than close this time.
- 10:37Swings on, fouls the ball back.
- 10:40Strike two.
- 10:41One-and-two.
- 10:45One ball, two strikes.
- 10:47Maxwell is first base on balls, two outs, no score.
- 10:57We have a breeze that is pleasant and strong and blowing from right field toward left.
- 11:09Big Charlie steps off the rubber.
- 11:12Maxwell runs the strike on.
- 11:15Now Bob is ready.
- 11:18Pitches a curve just outside, and it is ball two.
- 11:22Charlie thought he had the third strike.
- 11:23Started to step off the mound toward the dugout.
- 11:26McKinnon says, no fouls outside.
- 11:31All right, two-and-two.
- 11:38Cash swinging from the end.
- 11:41He's not a big fellow, but he's very scivvy to build.
- 11:45He gives the impression of strength.
- 11:49Somebody over in the Yankee dugout is getting up, and I just want to turn around and grin.
- 11:54Look, grins all the time.
- 11:56Cash takes strike three.
- 11:58Oh, that was a fastball in there.
- 12:00Charlie strikes off the side.
- 12:04So at the end of half an inning, it is Detroit nothing.
- 12:06As we start the big afternoon, the Yankees coming in for their first lick.
- 12:19Never stop to think about the little things that add up to having a good day.
- 12:23Things like a bright, sunny morning, hot coffee, toast, done the way you like it.
- 12:29And when you hop in your car and you want the engine to start right up,
- 12:32you idle smoothly to give good performance while you're on the go.
- 12:36Many times it's the little things that keep an engine running at its best,
- 12:39like a clean carburetor.
- 12:41Today's Atlantic Imperial Gasoline is specially designed to clean your carburetor as you drive and keep it clean.
- 12:49A clean carburetor means smoother performance and greater gasoline economy.
- 12:54Make every day a good day.
- 12:56Start off with Atlantic Imperial Gasoline and keep your car on the go.
- 13:07Bobby Richardson, Hector Lopez, and Nicky Mantle, or Roger Maris, rather.
- 13:18Now as we look around the big ballpark, we see some of those areas up in the extreme right and left field corners filling up rather rapidly.
- 13:25While the ballpark is not capacity, you would not find a variety of good seats available.
- 13:32Let's put it that way.
- 13:34You might have to sit behind a poster, too, and even those seats, the way the crowd still keeps coming in, maybe filled up.
- 13:40Now this will come close to being the largest crowd of the season.
- 13:56All right, Don Loffey, touching to Bobby Richardson.
- 14:02Take low, ball one.
- 14:06The Yankees have made a change in deference to the left-handed pitching Mosse.
- 14:13Vance Kubeck, with McDougall of short, and Boyer, or rather McDougall of third.
- 14:20There is a pop-up of cash in foul ground at the moment next to cash.
- 14:27Kubeck is out, and they have two right-handed swingers on the left side of the infield, and they kill those on Boyer.
- 14:36There is Hector Lopez and Red Barber.
- 14:48That's real shady, except for left. He's got his forward foot right up against the plate, and his back foot drawn back of him.
- 14:57Pitchers on the outside, ball one.
- 15:06One ball, and off right.
- 15:09Don Mosse, left-hander.
- 15:14Neal's curveball is low inside, and it is ball two.
- 15:23Mosse is very much a blue net.
- 15:33Pumps, pitches.
- 15:37Low inside, ball three.
- 15:40Three and out.
- 15:43That was exactly overawed by that last decision.
- 15:49You can see pitchers winch, you know.
- 15:56Three-nothing pitch, and there for the strike.
- 16:00I think Hank Bauer put it most graphically when he was talking about a close call going against the pitchers.
- 16:06He was sitting up in the stands with us one day down at the training camp, and he says,
- 16:09Look at that old pitcher fumes. He thought that was a strike.
- 16:15And pitches won't strike.
- 16:17The three-one pitch, low inside, ball four.
- 16:21Throw it up that walk.
- 16:24And he's on with one out, last of the first inning, no score, and here is Roger Marich.
- 16:29He's got it in the backhand.
- 16:46Roger Marich hitting a three-29.
- 16:49Twenty-five home runs, sixty-four RBI.
- 16:53He's the starting right fielder for the American League All-Stars.
- 16:56The curve is over, right wing.
- 17:01This year as last year, the players in the league voted for those who would start,
- 17:06that's the pitchers.
- 17:08And the only stipulation was you could not vote for anybody on your own squad,
- 17:12which meant that Marich got no Yankee votes.
- 17:15There was no stuff in the ballot box.
- 17:19He was elected as a star by the players of the seven other teams in the league.
- 17:24And the other players in the league regarded him as the best right fielder in the league.
- 17:27Same thing for Madeline Center, Minosso on the left.
- 17:31Schouen at first base.
- 17:34A surprise, I think, was Reynolds.
- 17:36The players elected him.
- 17:38And Boston.
- 17:40And this rookie shortstop at Baltimore, Hanson.
- 17:43See, that must be meaningful to him.
- 17:46And the third baseman, Malzone.
- 17:48That's no surprise.
- 17:49And Mr. Bauer is still by the vote of his opposing players, the top catcher.
- 17:55Marich swings and hits a hard-fired ball out into short center field.
- 17:58The second baseman is moving under it.
- 18:01He has it.
- 18:02The ball was hung up there long enough.
- 18:04He is the second baseman of the shortstop.
- 18:06Make an easy play of it.
- 18:07Now we have two down and there's Mantle.
- 18:18And Mati hitting 269.
- 18:21Batting right-handed against Mati.
- 18:27Matfield deep, well around front left on Mantle.
- 18:30Howl's coaching at first base.
- 18:31Serzetti at third.
- 18:34The Detroit infield is cash at first, Bowling at second.
- 18:37Fernandez is doing a great job as a short and the veteran third baseman, Eddie Yost.
- 18:42Down Mati pitches and Mantle fouls it back on the screen.
- 18:47And there's Winston who drove in three runs yesterday.
- 18:52Out in left field is Charlie Maxwell.
- 18:56Center fielder.
- 18:59K-line.
- 19:00And the right fielder is the bronze boy who had four hits yesterday.
- 19:05Looks like he's about ready to get off the reservation.
- 19:07Rocco Calavito.
- 19:09All right, no score.
- 19:10Two down.
- 19:11Lopez at first.
- 19:12Mati pitches a curve just outside under the ball once.
- 19:17One and one.
- 19:20Don sort of thought he had that.
- 19:22And apparently there's a yip that comes out of the Detroit bench probably from Dyches.
- 19:27McKenna, the play down fire, turns over to the Detroit bench and points to the outside of the plate,
- 19:31meaning the pitch is wide.
- 19:34One ball, two strikes.
- 19:46That was a decided change of pace from Mati who had been working with curves and suddenly he let that one loose.
- 19:54One ball, two strikes.
- 20:00Catch holding first against Lopez.
- 20:04The pitch swung on in line in the center field for a base hit.
- 20:07Lopez goes down the second and holds on on K-line's arm.
- 20:12Throw in and it's cut off the short.
- 20:14So a man will get the first hit of the game, the line single to center.
- 20:18And the moose comes up to the plate.
- 20:24Just when it looks as though all was gone yesterday in the night time with two men out,
- 20:29failing by two.
- 20:31Up comes Mr. Skaren and buzz the home run.
- 20:34McGoogle followed with a triple.
- 20:36Richardson followed with a single.
- 20:38Hipsmop pinched it a double.
- 20:40And Damesha got his first hit of the Yankee, a single, and the tournament was over.
- 20:50Yankees are first and second.
- 20:52Two men out.
- 20:53No score.
- 20:55First inning, first to two games.
- 21:04Lopez starts to walk out second base, bowling the second base and broke in and Maddler hollered at Lopez.
- 21:09Look out.
- 21:13The mighty moose up there hitting 316 and he gets saved in his last seven.
- 21:18Takes a slider low inside, ball one.
- 21:23One ball, no strike.
- 21:29Not too around toward left.
- 21:38Left hand delivers and it's a curve low inside, ball two.
- 21:43Two and 0.
- 21:49Monta being a little bit more deliberate now.
- 21:58Infield is back.
- 22:01Two men gone.
- 22:04Lopez steps up second.
- 22:05Maddler has a long lead with the first baseman deep at first.
- 22:08Monta checks second pitches.
- 22:10Darn swing, hits the ball toward the right corner.
- 22:12It is foul.
- 22:15It was in there but just the wrong side of the foul pole.
- 22:21You know when Sharon hits the ball and it goes just as far in any direction, you don't have to pull it.
- 22:27You knew that one had more than enough distance but you had to wait because it was going right down the line.
- 22:32The moose was apprehensive about it staying fair too because you could see he started to run and then hesitated and ran another step.
- 22:44Two balls, one strike.
- 22:53Sharon sets that foul for figures.
- 22:55Monta delivers and Sharon hits the line, drives foul right back to the first base coach, Ralph House.
- 23:01Boy, he hit that ball hard toward right side.
- 23:05Two and two. Two balls, two strikes, two outs. No score.
- 23:19Well, Monta is said to have been warned about pitching outside the challenge.
- 23:23With his first two pitches he tried to pitch him low inside and ball one, ball two.
- 23:30You can always get that ball just where you want it.
- 23:33Now let's see. Monta is set.
- 23:36Head Bob checks the run out of the pitch.
- 23:38Sharon swings and fouls it back and knocks the mask off of Wilson to catch it.
- 23:42Throw it off of his head.
- 23:51Listen, don't think those foul balls don't jaw you.
- 23:56You get in the back eye or broken nose, missing some teeth, cracking a tinnitus, but it does not minimize the impact.
- 24:09I've heard catches played on par, says these foul tips, it's like a fellow hits you in the face with his fist, the jaw.
- 24:17All right, two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 24:22Monta delivers and Sharon's swinging, hits a high foul, out of play, back to first base.
- 24:29Nine-twenty-two.
- 24:44Monta, ready with another apple.
- 25:01John comes down, front of the stick that leads. The pitch is hung on foul back.
- 25:14Felling out, Sharon is making Monta work.
- 25:31Nine-twenty-two.
- 25:47John has a goal to third base and Sharon holds the first with a solid single and a date straight game for it.
- 26:03Well, a date straight for the Moose, it's not one or nothing to play for the Yankees.
- 26:11Monta came down with a change of pace and Sharon's properly taken it out.
- 26:15John McDougall went into pinch hit yesterday and came up with a double to right center.
- 26:20And then when the Yankees were run behind and two out in the last of the ninth inning, triple to deep left center.
- 26:26That's the first stop for McDougall since June 6th when young Boyer got in there and became just simply sensational.
- 26:34That's where it stands. Swings it to the curve, hits it to the right field corner. It is a face hit. There's Campbell in the score and it's a Brown-Rose double.
- 26:46The ball is touched by a fan down in the corner. So McDougall has really come back to work with a vengeance.
- 26:53It did not do nothing in favor of the Yankees. He'll double down the right field corner.
- 26:59And the Brown-Rose is held to third base. Maddow's course is scored.
- 27:05Hank Agari is in the bullpen. The left hander fits one man and walked him without throwing a strike in the jam yesterday.
- 27:13Maddow is scored.
- 27:19The Yankees are now ahead two-nothing.
- 27:24There's Elton Howard. Howard hitting two-fifty-three.
- 27:32And they're going to put him on at first base. Leverett, based on balls, is now a forthcoming.
- 27:39It means they'll put him at first and pitch to Boyer.
- 27:48There's ball three. All of them are purposely wide.
- 27:56And ball four. So Howard is on.
- 28:03Leverett Boyer, who has been the third baseman, is now starting in shortstop today.
- 28:07Hitting two-eighteen.
- 28:12The Yankees are leading two-nothing.
- 28:17First of the double-header.
- 28:21First inning of it.
- 28:24Three on Boyer.
- 28:31Not too ideal. Then it's a curve in, therefore a strike. Nothing in wide.
- 28:41No balls, one strike.
- 28:52Pitch is outside.
- 28:55They're hard, one-and-one.
- 29:01Ball strike two-down. The Yankees have got two in the bank.
- 29:06So they have man-terrally to work on. They're trying to get more right here at the start.
- 29:16There's a ground ball to third. And it gets through Yost. Everybody is safe, and another run is in.
- 29:25The ground ball right at the third baseman, and Yost is charged with an error. It is no run batted in.
- 29:32So E-five is scoring.
- 29:37So everything is happening to the Tigers now.
- 29:40It's three-nothing in favor of the Yankees, and the pitcher Bob Curley is coming up.
- 29:46This third run is not earned, and any other runs that may be scored in this inning cannot be earned.
- 29:54Only two can be, first of.
- 29:57Well, the single turn to a pitcher Dittmar, and he pinched it a double yesterday. Coach is hitting 344.
- 30:03I imagine Curley is up there with a base hit on his mind.
- 30:07If he could gather it would make his afternoon much more pleasant, work easier.
- 30:11He swings at the curve ball, strike one.
- 30:15And that's the way Dittmar is going to do the starting pitch of the second game.
- 30:27Nothing in one.
- 30:31He's ready.
- 30:34Curley swings and hits a high five ball out to left field.
- 30:37Well, Charlie Maxwell is camped under it, so left field are waiting. He's got it.
- 30:42So that's it. Three runs are in. Nine men bat, three men are left.
- 30:47There were three hits. There was one error, and they are across the third run.
- 30:51Score at the end of the first inning, the Yankees three, and the Tigers nothing.
- 30:57First of a double header at Washington at the end of six innings.
- 30:59It is Cleveland five and Washington one.
- 31:02Held and seen as a home run for the Indians, and Lemon as it is 19-4 Washington.
- 31:07Terry is pitching this to Cleveland.
- 31:09And the National League at the end of three and a half innings at Philadelphia,
- 31:12San Francisco five, Philadelphia nothing.
- 31:16North Shore end of inning and a half, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.
- 31:21Cincinnati is ready to start at Chicago, the same as Milwaukee, upstate Lloyd.
- 31:29Well, head right a fair bit. Calabito hitting 252. He had four single-goers today.
- 31:41All right, hand batting.
- 31:44So Troy is limbering up calisthenics, as you know.
- 31:51Three-nothing, save in New York. And there's a bounce ball over the mound.
- 31:54Troy the jump can't get it. In comes Richardson and makes the throw and gets him at first base.
- 32:07That ball was dying on the pitching side of second base, and Richardson came in.
- 32:10He's been playing deep.
- 32:12Grabbed the ball through across his chest without any waste of time and just nipped him.
- 32:21One up, one away. And the hitter is K-line batting 234.
- 32:30That's the other step toward left. Surely the fastball is outside, ball one.
- 32:51That's over. Good hog. It's the both knees on the outside, one and one.
- 33:00Surely his one is last five, not five and one.
- 33:05This ball is starting in the second game, his one is last four.
- 33:08Fastball's thrown on, bounce over the mound, and Baia comes up with it.
- 33:11It's draw, throws to first and gets him.
- 33:15You've had two base hits in a row. That's these young men, first pitcher and now Baia, taking away from the Tigers.
- 33:23That's draw.
- 33:26Now we have Chico Fernandez hitting 259 and giving them a great job at short stops.
- 33:32They got him during the winter from Philadelphia.
- 33:37That feels straight away, not too deep.
- 33:44The swings and bounces of all two Baia.
- 33:46That's a short hop, but there's a draw at the first.
- 33:48Ten times.
- 33:50What a fast infield.
- 33:54The crowd are letting out for the big draw of approval.
- 33:58And the draw at the end of an inning and a half, the Yankees three and the Tigers nothing.
- 34:06Buenos dias, señor. You are an Atlantic dealer?
- 34:08Yes, sir. I'm an Atlantic dealer. Can I help you?
- 34:10I am Luis Andalingo Cordoba, greatest bullfighter in all the world. Never have I known a bull to snort like this automobile.
- 34:17Snorts, huh? What type of car is it?
- 34:19Taurus.
- 34:20Well, maybe Taurus. Maybe your car has a dirty carburetor.
- 34:22El carburador, señor?
- 34:23Yes. When a carburetor gets dirty, it can cause rough engine performance and waste gasoline.
- 34:27Muy malo, señor.
- 34:28But now we can fix that with Atlantic Imperial gasoline. It cleans your carburetor as you drive and keeps it clean.
- 34:34Muy bueno, señor. And this Atlantic Imperial, it works fast?
- 34:37Fast as you can say, ole. Like to try it?
- 34:39Let's see. It is time to take the bull by the horn.
- 34:44Ah, the car's performance is almost as smooth as one of my own.
- 34:47If this were a bull, I would award Atlantic both ears and the tail. Atlantic keeps the car on the go.
- 34:54The last of the second inning, it'll be Richardson, Lopez, and Maris.
- 35:10Bobby Singleton, my mother, knocked in the tying run last night.
- 35:12That projected the string through seven straights.
- 35:15And the Yankees are really hot while they're on their way.
- 35:18You can just tell. They're failing. They're just going to take it away from everybody.
- 35:23Bobby swings on what looks to be a screwball as low as down like once.
- 35:34See nothing to be off here in the first one.
- 35:39Bobby swings at the high foul, close over by the Vista's dugout.
- 35:43Let's see, Wilson coming back to catch her. And, oh, he's got it right on in.
- 35:47But he does not stay with it.
- 35:49Oh, he's rugged.
- 35:51Boy, that rail in front of the back seat didn't mean anything to him.
- 35:58And I tell you one thing, whoever built that railing really constructed it.
- 36:04Probably used to back up the line, you know, for Wisconsin.
- 36:08All right, no balls, two strikes.
- 36:13Watch the deal. High, and it is ball one, high and outside.
- 36:38Let's send our pitchers in.
- 36:43There's a base hitter lined single into left center.
- 36:46That's a great game for Bobby.
- 36:48Takes his turn, first and holds on.
- 36:50The tail ironer saves the ball, throws it in.
- 36:52So Richardson, a foot swing lines out to left center.
- 36:55Oh, this Yankee ball comes on fire.
- 37:02Here is Hector Lopez.
- 37:05He walked in the first inning.
- 37:07And then the two men out, Maddell single, Sharon single, and McGoogle double.
- 37:12Now it walks and came an hour and a third.
- 37:20Lopez sets.
- 37:24Cash holding first base against Richardson.
- 37:26Massey pitches, and Lopez bunch up for a first base.
- 37:29Coach feels it close to the second base and bowling coming just in time.
- 37:32And they sacrifice Bobby neatly right on over.
- 37:35Lopez laid down a well-not-perfect bunch.
- 37:43Now we have Roger Maritz, who pops up second in the first inning.
- 37:48After a broad right.
- 38:00Let's end it here.
- 38:10Let's end it here.
- 38:12Let's end it here.
- 38:14Don Massey, let's end it here.
- 38:16Delivers and Maritz swinging at the high foul ball.
- 38:19Wilson is charging back, charging back.
- 38:21He's getting under it closer to the fans than he has it.
- 38:25Maritz fouled out.
- 38:27Two men gone.
- 38:29And the middle is Maddell.
- 38:31We've got the first hit of the game.
- 38:33The line single the center in the first inning.
- 38:47He's got his average up now about 270.
- 39:02Massey taking a long time to read the sign,
- 39:05because the sign will have to be given in a sequence to run a rip
- 39:08and second base can fit as well as a pitcher.
- 39:12He's got his eye outside, ball one.
- 39:25One ball, no strike.
- 39:30Yankee's leading three-nothing.
- 39:33Now the Detroit left-hander deals and Mickey swings
- 39:36and grabs it down the goal.
- 39:38And nobody can't recover and climb the thrall, so that's a base hit.
- 39:42Knocks the ball down just inside the foul line deep back to third,
- 39:45but cannot recover for the thrall.
- 39:49So it is a single for Manil, giving two to two.
- 39:55Richardson moves over to third base.
- 39:58And a five-hit for New York.
- 40:00And here's Cowan, who's single,
- 40:02but not in the first run in the first inning.
- 40:08Yankee's leading three-nothing and going for more.
- 40:16That's his gate.
- 40:19Two steps around toward left.
- 40:25First three-nothing New York. Yankee's at first and third.
- 40:32Two outs, second inning, first game.
- 40:35Cowan hits a high five ball to D. Bright.
- 40:37Salavado is on risk, coming in as the wind catches it, makes the catch.
- 40:44That's all for the Baird. No runs, two hits.
- 40:47And at the end of two innings, it's the Yankees, three runs, five hits, and no errors.
- 40:51And the Tigers, no runs, no hits, and one error.
- 40:57A clean carburetor gives smoother driving performance,
- 41:00so use new Atlantic Imperials, the gasoline that cleans your carburetor and keeps it clean.
- 41:05Now we have Wilson first up as we move into the third inning.
- 41:09The big catcher drove in three yesterday.
- 41:16Wilson hits 243 right now.
- 41:20Yankees on top three-nothing, Kelly Beal, high outside ball too.
- 41:26Two-and-oh.
- 41:36Two balls, no strike.
- 41:45That is in there for the strike.
- 41:50This is the last time the Yankees will be here until they return with a white stock, Friday night, July 22.
- 41:59That's a big weekend.
- 42:02Friday night game, Saturday afternoon, July 23, and a double hit on Sunday, July 24.
- 42:06Ground ball hits the start.
- 42:08Boyum over the first and Wilson's out.
- 42:14And here's Mosse coming up to use for himself.
- 42:21Cleveland will come in on the heels of the white stock, or Tuesday night, July 26,
- 42:27and a double hitter Wednesday, July 27, and a night game, which your schedule is not thorough, Thursday, July 28.
- 42:34That's because of that Sunday, Raynard double header you'll recollect.
- 42:41Pitch is high outside, ball one.
- 42:47Back from July 22 through August 4, two weeks the Yankees will be home top of it at that time.
- 42:5321 open day in there now.
- 42:56Going on, ground down to short, and bounces now, but Boyum jumps up to close the first.
- 43:00Boyum's reflexes are amazing.
- 43:04The ball was hit promptly, and he was charging it in to play it on the routine hop,
- 43:08and suddenly the ball, actually, had kangaroo blood in it.
- 43:11It took a good big hop, and Boyum was hesitating.
- 43:14I don't see how he did it. He just went right up in here and pulled it down.
- 43:19Well, he's thrown out four straight men.
- 43:22Now, we have two up and two down, and the hitter is yours.
- 43:29And he is remarkable for his eyes and his ability to get it based on balls.
- 43:35The fellow who drew the most walks, of course, is Babe Ruth, 2056.
- 43:41Ted Williams at the start of this year was second for the 1,943.
- 43:46I don't know how many he's gotten this year. Where he's gotten some.
- 43:48There's a fastball inside the hip.
- 43:51Mel Hatt was third with 1,708, and Yost stands fourth all time with 1,547.
- 43:58Gary gets fifth, 1,510.
- 44:021,050 is one long grounded foul outside third. It made the third base coach, Billy Hitchcock, move.
- 44:07But I would contend that Yost's record is much more remarkable than that of the other four,
- 44:11because they were all sluggers.
- 44:13Ruth, Williams, Geregg, and of course, the big men in the air walks who just didn't want to pitch to him.
- 44:19But nobody has been not wanting to pitch to Yost. He's had to earn his.
- 44:251,150, go outside, ball two.
- 44:28I know that when Eddie Stanky set the National League record for the most walks in the state,
- 44:34he worked to do that. He had to work to get the walk.
- 44:42I know he would just go up there and take two strikes and then foul off pitches.
- 44:47There's a high foul ball deep back at third. Let's see. It's coming out of right into the fan.
- 44:54I know that he got so in the league with Stanky that the pitchers bitterly resented their walking.
- 45:02And they'd do anything in their world they could not to walk.
- 45:05And he still set the record, 148 for that league.
- 45:08Set the record for the most walks in the season, set by Ruth, of course.
- 45:17Two balls, two strikes. Two outs.
- 45:25Ruth's record total for one year on bases on balls is 170.
- 45:34Right into, actually when you think of a set of statistics, you've got to interpret them.
- 45:44Big two pitchers on there, there's a high foul ball deep out to that field.
- 45:47Lopez is going back to the wall and he's trying to, but he can't catch it.
- 45:52He can't catch it. It's a home run.
- 46:00Yes, got it in the left field field. And this is the first hit off, Kelly, on the first run.
- 46:04And it's now a 3-1 ball game.
- 46:11And Lopez made a desperate attempt. He went over and Leith retuned it, but the ball was too high.
- 46:21Well, here we go. So the torch starts dancing back.
- 46:24Now we have Frank Bowling.
- 46:26He puts a third strike in the first inning.
- 46:33Makes a full try ball for a tall strike.
- 46:43Nothing in one.
- 46:49Big Kelly deals.
- 46:50Curves one on. The ball is hit by the left field line and it is called foul.
- 46:54But that's what the dish.
- 46:57Well, well, well.
- 47:03Nothing in two.
- 47:15No ball, two strikes.
- 47:19Two down.
- 47:21High inside curve is all one.
- 47:44Curve outside.
- 48:03That ball is rounded down to third to McDougall.
- 48:06That's the goal of the move.
- 48:08And that's the side.
- 48:11One run, one hit, the old home run and the score at the end of two and a half innings.
- 48:17The Yankees three and the Tigers one.
- 48:20Field McDougall just hit him away.
- 48:25Doubled in the first inning. He had a pinch of double and a ninth inning triple yesterday.
- 48:31Takes a curve in for a strike.
- 48:34Well, we've got the news for you that just came in about the disposition that will have to be made Friday night.
- 48:41It was rained out here.
- 48:42Remember when it rained all afternoon and evening?
- 48:45No chance to play.
- 48:48Macduffers swings that line the ball into the left field for a clean single.
- 48:54Well, well, well.
- 48:56I guess Gale is just telling everybody that he didn't like it on the bench.
- 49:01He's four for five.
- 49:04Since he got left loose.
- 49:16Detroit comes in here for a night game on Monday, August the 1st.
- 49:22An afternoon game on Tuesday, August the 2nd and a night game on Wednesday, August the 3rd.
- 49:28Here's Howard.
- 49:32Curve inside for one.
- 49:34So a nice rained out game has got to be put in on Tuesday night, August the 2nd.
- 49:39So there'll be the regular afternoon game.
- 49:41Then as a metallic peppered ball game, there'll be a night game.
- 49:46So what that series will be the 1st of August is three night games and an afternoon game.
- 49:50Howard's swing hits the ball out to left field.
- 49:52Charlie McFarlane makes the grab and we have one out.
- 49:58So you got that all straight.
- 50:02You can have a schedule.
- 50:03Just simply add to it a night game Tuesday with Detroit August the 2nd.
- 50:10So there'll be four ball games.
- 50:11There's another double header on the 2nd.
- 50:13An afternoon game at 2 p.m. and a night game at 8.
- 50:19Two separate admissions.
- 50:23And here's Boyer who hit a ground ball in the 1st inning that Yost Aradon had let in the 3rd run to the Yankees.
- 50:29They lead 3 to 1.
- 50:31Martin Texas runs it to two and Boyer hits a fly ball out close to the right field line.
- 50:36Calivator is hiding it.
- 50:37He's under it.
- 50:38He has it.
- 50:40Now he hits two down and the 5th is Charlie.
- 50:45Racing from the Yankee dugout, Martin up towards the plate.
- 50:49Gets his bat from the on deck hitter who was out there for him, Richardson.
- 50:55Bob gets the big hand.
- 50:58Charlie swings it to high fly.
- 51:00That's the 3rd base when he's under.
- 51:03And Yost makes the cut and that's it.
- 51:07No runs, one hit.
- 51:10So the total is at the end of three innings.
- 51:13Three runs, six hits, no errors for New York.
- 51:15One run, one hit and one error for Detroit.
- 51:21Now we've got Mr. Regiddo moving in here.
- 51:27Right there on the 2nd inning he saw a little infielding didn't he?
- 51:30Oh that kid Boyer, it just looks like any place you put him he can do the job.
- 51:37That goes with all the Yankee ballplayers.
- 51:39Charlie 4-4 Maxwell who walked in the first inning leading off for Detroit here on the top of the 4th with New York leading 3-1.
- 51:47WLKO Albany.
- 51:49Now swings into the windup.
- 51:53The pitch to Maxwell is hit on the ground on the right side.
- 51:55Garand's up with it.
- 51:56Flips underhand and Charlie covering in time to retire Maxwell.
- 51:59It's one away.
- 52:03Brings up Norm Cash who was called out on strikes in the first inning.
- 52:09On deck Rocky Colavito.
- 52:23One out, nobody on top of the 4th.
- 52:26Yankees 3, Detroit 1.
- 52:34Up 10 hitting first baseman Norm Cash ready.
- 52:36Takes the pitch low, ball 1.
- 52:51Charlie's 1-0 delivery is low inside ball 2, 2-0. Cash reaches down for some dirt.
- 53:04Bob Charlie out on the mound, he's won his last five straight games.
- 53:152-0 pitch high outside ball 3.
- 53:24Elston Howard rubs up the ball before firing it back to Charlie.
- 53:28Yogi Berrett sitting out the first game.
- 53:40Charlie takes that big deep breath before releasing the pitch.
- 53:43Here's a 3-0 delivery. It's high for ball 4.
- 53:48That's the second walk given up by Charlie and here's Rocky Colavito.
- 53:52Rocky was thrown out on a fine fielding play by Bobby Richardson in the second inning.
- 53:57He tapped one over Charlie's head and Bobby coming in on the dead run through across his body as only he can, just nipping Colavito.
- 54:05Rocky argued a little bit on the play.
- 54:08He's turned in for Rocky's brother Dominic outside the ball park and he's built even more powerfully than Colavito, who is quite a ball player in his own right and has quite an influence on Rocky.
- 54:25Cash leading off for a scour and holding him on. Here's the stretch by Charlie.
- 54:29Popped in the air in short right field. Richardson's moving back for it. Under it and he's got it. 2-way.
- 54:39Colavito trying to go to the opposite field.
- 54:42Here's Al Kailin who was thrown out on a nice play by Cletus Boyer in the second inning.
- 54:48Boyer playing shortstop in place of Tony Kubek today.
- 54:51This is the first game that Kubek has not started all year.
- 55:04Kubek is the only Yankee ball player who has been in every game up till today.
- 55:112-out, 3-1 the Yankees lead.
- 55:132-K line is a curve over, strike one call. Beautiful change up curve ball.
- 55:26K-line came into this game batting 234.
- 55:35Charlie set.
- 55:37Fastball is low, gets by Howard. There goes Cash down to second base.
- 55:41That ball hit in the dirt in front of Howard.
- 55:44It's a wild pitch charged to Bob Charlie.
- 55:47Cash advances to second base. A one-on-one count on Al Kailin.
- 55:51And it looked like Bob tried to put a little extra on that fastball and got away from him.
- 56:01Al Kailin has a lifetime batting average of 311 up till this year.
- 56:07That's why every time we look at that batting average of the 230s it's hard to believe.
- 56:13Here's Charlie's pitch. Curve ball, line of left field, a base hit.
- 56:16Here comes Cash around third and Lopez's throw comes in at second base.
- 56:20It's a 3-2 ball game.
- 56:29So the wild pitch was costly to Charlie.
- 56:32Letting Cash get in scoring position down at second base and then he hung a high curve ball
- 56:36at Kailin and he ripped the single of left field.
- 56:40For Kailin, his 29th run batted in on the air.
- 56:42It's a 3-2 ball game with two out the bat of Chico Fernandez who bounced to the shortstop in the second inning.
- 56:55On deck, Red Wilson.
- 57:01Kailin leading off first.
- 57:04There goes Kailin, a pitch high inside to throw to second.
- 57:07Kailin is long enough. He goes back to first and he tags out.
- 57:12That play going from 2 to 4 to 3.
- 57:22Kailin went halfway down. How his throw had him beat.
- 57:25So Kailin tried to get back to first but Richardson throw to Garand, put the tag on him.
- 57:294 to Troyd in the top of the fourth inning, one run on one base hit.
- 57:34No Yankees errors and nobody left to score at the end of the 3-1 half inning.
- 57:37The Yankees 3, the Tigers 2.
- 57:45In the bottom of the fourth inning, Bobby Richardson leading off for the third time in the ball game will be the batter.
- 57:50Bobby popped to first and single is center field.
- 57:55Richardson has now hit an eighth consecutive ball game as has Bill Garand.
- 58:01Watch his curve ball is popped to center field. Al Kailin moving in under it and makes the catch one away.
- 58:12Brings up Hector Lopez who has not been up officially as yet.
- 58:15He walked in the first inning and scored and sacrificed successfully in the second inning.
- 58:27One on, nobody on. 3-2, the Yankees lead the Tigers.
- 58:34Hector Lopez fastball line to left center field of eight hits.
- 58:38Kailin digging fast over to his right.
- 58:40Stop with the Lopez around first, starts for second and ends, starts back and the throw is too late.
- 58:45Hector was well on his way to going, suddenly realized he couldn't make it.
- 58:49He should have seen him put on the brakes and start back.
- 58:52It looked like he was running in one spot for about ten seconds but he made it.
- 59:07Brings up Roger Maris who is open to pop the second base ball out to the catcher.
- 59:15One away, Lopez leads off first. The pitch is a curve over, strike one, call.
- 59:21Yankees have seven base hits off down Marcy.
- 59:32Left hander stretches, once again the stretch position by Marcy.
- 59:38Pitch is hit on the ground at second base, balling up with it over to second for one.
- 59:42Back to first, not in time.
- 59:44And that was a fine play by Frank Bowling on a wicked hop.
- 59:49They got Lopez but they couldn't get Maris.
- 59:53And here comes Mickey Mantle.
- 59:56With Maris at first and two out, Mantle is two for two, single of center.
- 1:00:00Go out in the first inning and beat out an infield single in the second.
- 1:00:05Pitch to Mickey is just outside ball one.
- 1:00:10On deck, Bill Scharer.
- 1:00:27Throw to first base, Maris back in plenty of time.
- 1:00:36Time call while Mantle drives off his hands.
- 1:00:42Holding that bat right down on the end, batting right handed.
- 1:00:47Jump outside, ball two, two and nothing.
- 1:01:11Maris with a short lead off first base.
- 1:01:14Two nothing pitch is over, strike one.
- 1:01:18Looks like a screw-jee, a screwball.
- 1:01:22Wasn't throwing up there too fast.
- 1:01:26Two and one on Mantle.
- 1:01:42One pitch is top ball and going out of play,
- 1:01:46Cash chasing it to the box piece but it goes back about five or six rows.
- 1:01:53Two balls, two strikes, two outs. Mickey Mantle to bat.
- 1:02:17John Marcy who holds a 12-9 lifetime edge over New York, got a 5-5 record this year.
- 1:02:25Here's a stretch by the left-hander.
- 1:02:30A 2-2 pitch is outside ball three, both out on Mickey so Maris will be off.
- 1:02:36Two men out and three and two on the bat.
- 1:02:51Yankees three, Detroit two, here in the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:02:56Ready now for the payoff pitch to Mickey. Here it is and it strikes a swingy one after a high curve ball.
- 1:03:06Four New York in the bottom of the fourth inning, no runs on one base hit.
- 1:03:11No Detroit errors and one man left. A score at the end of fourth inning.
- 1:03:16New York three runs, seven hits, no errors. Detroit two runs, two hits, one error. We pause for station identification.
- 1:03:23The UOKO Albany three twenty-seven.
- 1:03:27Right now I'd like to mention that the second half of this game is being brought to you by Ballantine Al.
- 1:03:32The only Al that gives you the big, big case that comes from Brewer's Goal.
- 1:03:36Here's Chico Fernandez who was at bat when Al Kaelin was picked off attempting to steal.
- 1:03:42Then the top of the fourth. Fernandez bounced to the shortstop in the second inning.
- 1:03:53Right hand hitting shortstop. McGoogle in at third. Here's the pitch by Charlie. It's lined to left field, a base hit.
- 1:03:59Lopez over to his right, up with it. Fernandez is on with a line, single or left.
- 1:04:05That's hit number three off Charlie.
- 1:04:09That brings up the catcher, Ed Wilton, who was thrown out by Boya in the third inning.
- 1:04:15That one time Boya had four consecutive assists.
- 1:04:25Yankees three, Detroit two, around the top of the fifth inning.
- 1:04:42The stretch by Charlie, and then he steps off the mound, keeping an eye on Fernandez who has six stolen bases this year. Top of the Tigers in that department.
- 1:05:00Here's the stretch. The pitch is bounced. No, it gets away from Howard. There goes Fernandez to second. He's around second.
- 1:05:07Wait a minute now. Wilton says he didn't foul the ball. Here comes Jimmy Dyke. Elton Howard went after the ball as though it did not foul.
- 1:05:15Ellie thought that it was a pass ball, started to charge back. Fernandez was going the third base.
- 1:05:21And then Ellie suddenly stopped, played up by Bill McKinley, said it was a foul ball. And Jimmy Dyke is out there arguing with McKinley.
- 1:05:28And Red Wilson is saying he did not foul the ball. And look at Dyke.
- 1:05:34And you can see why Dyke is mad after losing that ball game yesterday. Things have been going against him.
- 1:05:41And Dyke is pointing to Howard, and you can see what he's saying. Howard didn't think it was a foul ball. How come you did?
- 1:05:47Red Wilson and Jimmy Dyke, jaw to jaw with Bill McKinley. And they're going to lose this argument, that's for sure.
- 1:06:05It looked like a foul tip until Howard threw off his mask and started to charge back after the ball.
- 1:06:12And then as Ellie got halfway down, and I think he put Dyke out of the game, it looked like McKinley waved Jimmy Dyke out of the ball game.
- 1:06:25And they are really arguing down there. And McKinley is pointing to the dugout for Jimmy Dyke.
- 1:06:33As soon as we get word on whether Dyke was going out or not, we'll let you know.
- 1:06:39Now it looks like Jimmy's still in the game. He's standing on the top step of the dugout.
- 1:06:46But we'll wait and see.
- 1:06:50It's a strike on Red Wilson. A little bit of a rhubarb here. A very unusual play. We haven't seen that very often.
- 1:06:59Fairly into the stretch position.
- 1:07:02And steps off the mound. They're trying to get Fernandez to commit himself.
- 1:07:07A lot of the fans yelling balk, but anytime the pitcher steps back off the mound, he's not any trouble.
- 1:07:19Once again, Fairly gets set.
- 1:07:23The pitch is popped in the air outside of third. McGoogle moving over near the stand.
- 1:07:28And he can't quite get it. He got it! Holy cow, what a catch!
- 1:07:34McGoogle was leaning on the rail with his stomach, both feet off the ground, parallel to the ground.
- 1:07:43And we saw a lot of fans stick their hands up and then never saw the ball.
- 1:07:47And it looked like Gill couldn't possibly have gotten it. But he came out of there with third base umpire.
- 1:07:52John Stevens right on his neck and he saw that Gill had made the catch. Wilson is out of there.
- 1:07:57A fine play by McGoogle.
- 1:08:01One away.
- 1:08:06Brings up the pitcher Don Marci who bounced to the shortstop in the third inning.
- 1:08:09Now McGoogle comes in looking for the possible sacrifice.
- 1:08:13Torrance holding first against Chico. Here's the stretch by Fairly.
- 1:08:18Fairly steps off the rubber again and Marci steps out of the batter's box.
- 1:08:28Fairly ready again.
- 1:08:31Pitch is funded. A good one. Skaren is up with it. Runs to first base for the unassisted put out.
- 1:08:38Going down to second base, Chico Fernandez.
- 1:08:45And that time if Skaren was charging in he could have caught that ball on the fly.
- 1:08:49Usually when Moose is expecting a body he comes charging in.
- 1:08:53The ball was funded in the air. It took one hop. The Moose picked it up.
- 1:08:57Steps on the bag. Moving to second. Fernandez the tying run at second base.
- 1:09:01And here's Eddie Yoast who struck out in Homer's.
- 1:09:05His fourth home of the year and his fourteenth run battered in.
- 1:09:08Last year his first with Detroit. Yoast got off to a tremendous start.
- 1:09:13He had about 15-16 homers this time of the year.
- 1:09:23Fernandez leads off second. Fairly set.
- 1:09:26Curve is a little bit low. Ball one.
- 1:09:35Yankees started out this ball game just the way they left off yesterday.
- 1:09:38They scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win it.
- 1:09:40They scored three times in the bottom of the first.
- 1:09:43But since then Moci has settled down.
- 1:09:46New York leads 3-2 here in the top of the fifth.
- 1:09:54Fish high inside ball two. Two and nothing.
- 1:10:15Frank Boling is on deck.
- 1:10:22Charlie are cutting him back off. Fernandez and Charlie steps off the rubber.
- 1:10:26So that Cletus can get back to his position.
- 1:10:36All right now the stretch by Charlie. Richardson bluffing Fernandez back at second.
- 1:10:41Fits at the curve outside ball three. Three and nothing.
- 1:11:02Charlie stretches.
- 1:11:13The three and nothing fish high inside ball four.
- 1:11:16And Eddie Yoast gets his 70th walk of the year.
- 1:11:1970 base on balls this year for Eddie Yoast.
- 1:11:23And he's always amongst the league leaders.
- 1:11:26If not leading the league in base on balls year after year.
- 1:11:29Yoast is at first. Fernandez is at second.
- 1:11:32Frank Boling who's struck out and bounced to third the batter.
- 1:11:36On deck Charlie Maxwell.
- 1:11:51All right Charlie into his stretch position.
- 1:11:55Fits to Boling as the curve flung at him and missed strike one.
- 1:12:02Charlie goes back to the rosin bag.
- 1:12:06Mantle not playing too deep in center nor is Maris in right.
- 1:12:11Mopet's fairly deep in left field.
- 1:12:15And the infield playing way back.
- 1:12:22Charlie looks back at Fernandez. Another curve is hit deep to left field.
- 1:12:27Way back there.
- 1:12:29And it's a home run for Boling.
- 1:12:35Frank Boling hits a three run homo with two out and Detroit takes the lead five to three.
- 1:12:40For Boling his fifth home of the year.
- 1:12:43And it gives him a total of 30 runs batted in this year.
- 1:12:50Charlie looking a little dejected out on the mound.
- 1:12:55Charlie Maxwell will walk and bounce to first the batter.
- 1:13:02Fits to Maxwell.
- 1:13:04He's off to short center field rather than short.
- 1:13:06The boy had trouble in the sun. He makes the catch.
- 1:13:09He hit that right off the end of his bat.
- 1:13:12And had a field that's kind of sideways with the sun right in his eyes.
- 1:13:17So Detroit bounces back with three big runs here in the top of the fifth.
- 1:13:21On two base hits no Yankee errors and nobody left to score.
- 1:13:24At the end of four and a half innings Detroit five and the Yankees three.
- 1:13:36There's a baseball cap and a glove lying out on the field.
- 1:13:48Nobody's moving out there to get it.
- 1:13:51Chico Fernandez is not out of his position so it's probably there.
- 1:13:54It's Chico's hat and glove.
- 1:13:55Now he picks it up on the way out to his position.
- 1:13:59Bill Scorin who's singled and flying to right field leads off to New York here on the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:14:04Now the Yankees are two runs behind.
- 1:14:15Scorin has an eight game hitting streak going.
- 1:14:22Hits to the moose is in there strike one call.
- 1:14:26Yankees had Mossy on the ropes in the first inning.
- 1:14:30One more base hit and he might have been out of there.
- 1:14:33Nine men went to bat and they fought three times but he settled down.
- 1:14:37There's a curve foul at the plate strike two.
- 1:15:01Nothing into one scour the pitch inside for one.
- 1:15:08On deck Gail McGoogle.
- 1:15:26One ball two strike pitch curve foul out of play.
- 1:15:34No they have to give Bob Delaney another error and I'll have to check over there with the official score.
- 1:15:50Mossy into the windup. Pitch is foul back out of play.
- 1:15:59One ball two strikes.
- 1:16:16Pitch is a little low ball two two and two.
- 1:16:30Mossy turns around to rub up the ball.
- 1:16:34He's thrown a lot of pitches to the moose and the three times that scour has been to the plate.
- 1:16:41Two pitch curve hits to left field Maxwell moving under it and he's got it.
- 1:16:46Garen hits the ball right on the nose.
- 1:16:49Go ahead and get it up in the air enough.
- 1:16:51Garen only needs one more home and I have a hundred.
- 1:16:54Major League home run one away.
- 1:16:57Gail McGoogle who doubled and single.
- 1:16:59Gail is driven in one run.
- 1:17:02Now it looks like the rest has helped Gail.
- 1:17:06He's been hitting the ball hard and pinch hitting rolls and today starting.
- 1:17:12First pitcher McGoogle is in there strike one call.
- 1:17:30One strike pitch low outside ball one.
- 1:17:33This is Gail's first time since June the sixth.
- 1:17:39Elton Howard on deck.
- 1:17:50One one pitch strike call on the outside corner one ball two strikes.
- 1:18:15Now the pitch curve strike three swing.
- 1:18:23McGoogle goes down on strike.
- 1:18:28That's the second strikeout for Marcy in the ballgame.
- 1:18:30Got the medal in the fourth inning.
- 1:18:32Here is Elton Howard who walks and flying to left field.
- 1:18:36Detroit five the Yankees three were in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:18:44Marcy's pitch is low ball one.
- 1:19:07One nothing pitch is hit high in the air to left center field.
- 1:19:15K-line going back under it and has it for another three.
- 1:19:19And the Yankees go down one two three for the first time in the ballgame against Marcy.
- 1:19:23Nothing of course in the bottom of the fifth to score at the end of five full innings.
- 1:19:27Detroit five and the Yankees three.
- 1:19:30Norm Cash who walked in the fourth inning and scored struck out in the first inning leading off here in the top of the sixth.
- 1:19:36Detroit leading this ballgame five three.
- 1:19:40Charlie pitch is low ball one.
- 1:19:42Another big ballgame to go here at Yankee Stadium.
- 1:19:52Charlie flips the ball into McKinley who looks it over.
- 1:19:58K-line has nothing wrong with it and throws it back to Bob. Norm Cash had to ask the umpire to look at it.
- 1:20:12One nothing pitch outside ball two.
- 1:20:31Here's the two nothing delivery a foul back in the upper deck out of play.
- 1:20:39Two balls one strike.
- 1:20:53Charlie swings into the windup.
- 1:20:55That's all foul. I was chasing it but that ball is coming back on the screen and out of play.
- 1:21:10Charlie's two two pitch curve ball.
- 1:21:25Line to right center field. Marist going and it's off the wall.
- 1:21:30Cash thought it was a home run and had started to touch and has to go fast to get into second base.
- 1:21:36Norm Cash thought that ball was a home run.
- 1:21:42And the ball just missed going into the bleachers heading off the auxiliary scoreboard in right center field.
- 1:21:51Maybe it was the way Marist played the ball or maybe Cash thought he hit it higher than he actually did.
- 1:21:57But he started into his home run shot down to first base and then suddenly realized he had a seam in a second.
- 1:22:04For Cash's seventh double of the year.
- 1:22:07Brings up Rocky Colabito bounce to second and pops to second.
- 1:22:16The joy's five New York three top of the sixth.
- 1:22:26Charlie's pitch side on fastball pops up in the air to the right side. Richardson back.
- 1:22:30Marist coming in Richardson calling for it and he's got it.
- 1:22:35And all three times Colabito has hit to the second baseman one grounder to fly balls.
- 1:22:40Here's Al Kailine bounce the short single left as driven in one run.
- 1:22:57Now is out to the mound talking with Charlie.
- 1:23:07Bobby Chance and Johnny Gabler are up in the Yankee bullpen.
- 1:23:21Charlie ready for his first pitch to Kailine. Fastball is low ball one.
- 1:23:45One ball no strikes on Kailine. Cash leads off second.
- 1:23:49Pitch is popped in the air to short left field.
- 1:23:53Exelope is moving in under it.
- 1:23:56He's got it. That's two way.
- 1:23:59Brings up Chico Fernandez bounce the short single left. He scored in the fifth inning.
- 1:24:04He was on base when Frank Bowling hit the free run homer.
- 1:24:09Eddie Oates homer in the third inning.
- 1:24:17Five three Detroit lead two outs cash down at second.
- 1:24:34And the ball clearly started to deliver the pitch and it slipped out of his hand.
- 1:24:38Boy that's the first time we've seen that in a long long time.
- 1:24:43He had kicked his left leg and was ready to deliver the pitch.
- 1:24:48When it slipped out of his hand and rolled about six feet in back of the mound.
- 1:24:52Cash moves to third on the ball.
- 1:25:03Now Charlie will fish with his wind up motion.
- 1:25:10He's taking no chances not playing too deep at third.
- 1:25:14Slow curve is over strike one call.
- 1:25:23Chico's a pretty good runner.
- 1:25:30Fairly into the wind up.
- 1:25:33Third outside the ball one one one.
- 1:25:52One ball one strike two outs.
- 1:25:56That's for the line at center field Mickey Maddler right there makes the catch.
- 1:26:04Four Detroit in the top of the sixth one no runs on one hit.
- 1:26:08No Yankee errors one man left the score at the end of the five and a half inning.
- 1:26:12Detroit five and the Yankees three.
- 1:26:19They've got that big day.
- 1:26:31Next time you're in the mood to enjoy good food enjoy it even more with a refreshing glass of Valentine.
- 1:26:37You know more than a third question.
- 1:26:39Different than any beer.
- 1:26:40Valentine has a big big taste that really goes over big with food.
- 1:26:45A big big taste that comes from Brewer's Gold.
- 1:26:50Try Valentine ale with any meal.
- 1:26:51See what a difference an ale makes.
- 1:26:59Special right now.
- 1:27:19In the bottom of the sixth inning, Cletus Boyer, due to lead off for the Yankees, took
- 1:27:38a little bit of time coming out of the dugout, thought for a minute that Casey might be pinch
- 1:27:43hitting for him.
- 1:27:44Boyer reached on an error in the first inning and flying to right field and a serve.
- 1:27:47The Yankees trailing by two, five to three.
- 1:27:50In the bottom of the sixth, Charlie due to be the next hitter, but we have action in
- 1:27:54the Yankee both ends.
- 1:27:55Don Mossy out on the mound, the left hander swings into the wind up.
- 1:28:02Mr. Boyer is a curve foul down the left field line out of play, strike one.
- 1:28:25One strike hit is fouled in the upper deck and back of first base, strike two.
- 1:28:43Nothing in two on Boyer.
- 1:28:52The wind up and a fastball is inside, almost hit him, ball one.
- 1:29:08One ball, two strikes.
- 1:29:09Nobody out, nobody on.
- 1:29:10There's the pitch.
- 1:29:11It's lined up, center field, a base hit, maybe extra bases.
- 1:29:12Maxwell backhands the ball and Boyer's on with a long, single or left hander.
- 1:29:13Maxwell got over there real fast to keep that ball from going up the alley for two and possibly
- 1:29:30three bases.
- 1:29:31That's hit number eight off Mossy and let's see who's coming out.
- 1:29:36Bob Derv is coming out to bat for Caroling.
- 1:29:44Derv batting 253, has three doubles, a triple, eight homers and 21 runs batted in.
- 1:29:54He's been getting on bases of pinch hitter lately.
- 1:29:57Base on balls, base hit.
- 1:30:02Boyer's serve is really built like an old oak tree, I'll tell you.
- 1:30:15He is solid.
- 1:30:16Full back hitter made in football.
- 1:30:21Cash holds first against Boyer.
- 1:30:26Here's the stretch.
- 1:30:27The pitch to serve is outside ball one.
- 1:30:36The stretch by the left hander.
- 1:30:48Pitch is over.
- 1:30:49Ball one on one on deck, Bobby Richardson.
- 1:31:00Mossy kicking around out of the mound.
- 1:31:05Pitch is up his belt.
- 1:31:12The pitch is a curve a little bit high, ball two, two more on it.
- 1:31:28Two balls, one strike.
- 1:31:38Boyer leads off first.
- 1:31:39Here's the stretch.
- 1:31:40Pitch is high, ball three, three and one.
- 1:31:45And Mossy's walking in off the mound and Wilson not too happy with the curve.
- 1:31:57McKinley motions that the pitch was high.
- 1:32:03Detroit bench getting on McKinley a little bit.
- 1:32:05Three balls, one strike.
- 1:32:07Five-three, the Tigers lead here in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:32:23Mossy looks in for the sign from Wilson.
- 1:32:24There goes Boyer.
- 1:32:25The pitch is going in and missed.
- 1:32:26A throw to second and he takes a second.
- 1:32:27The ball goes in the center field.
- 1:32:28Boyer goes to third.
- 1:32:29That'll be a total of six.
- 1:32:30A stolen base for Cletus Boyer and an error on the throw by Red Wilson, allowing Boyer
- 1:32:48to go to third.
- 1:32:49Third swung at the pitch and missed.
- 1:32:50Boyer had a good job.
- 1:32:51Wilson took a lot of time getting rid of the ball, threw it in the third, bowling, trying
- 1:32:56to get the ball on a short hop.
- 1:32:59It went off his glove and stopped halfway out the center field.
- 1:33:02Cletus Boyer easily got upstormed in the third.
- 1:33:05And now we have a full count on Bob Serve with nobody out.
- 1:33:10Detroit leading five-three.
- 1:33:11Cletus Boyer over third.
- 1:33:12The infield is back.
- 1:33:13Boyer's first stolen base of the year.
- 1:33:14Here's the payoff pitch.
- 1:33:15A high pop up to the right side in foul territory.
- 1:33:16Norm Kess coming in front of the Yankee dugout.
- 1:33:17And he's got it.
- 1:33:30And Serve bangs the bat down on the ground as he fouls out to the first baseman.
- 1:33:37One away that brings up Bobby Richardson.
- 1:33:39Bobby pops the first, singled and lying in the center.
- 1:33:44And remember with Richardson's clutch, two-out single that tied the score in yesterday's
- 1:33:48ball game in the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:33:51Now, Yost moves in at third.
- 1:33:54Cash moves in at first.
- 1:33:55And the infield moves in halfway.
- 1:33:57Fernandez is short and bowling at second.
- 1:34:00And of course they've got to be on the alert for possible squeeze plays.
- 1:34:14Here's the wind up by Marcy.
- 1:34:16The pitch is taken low.
- 1:34:17Ball one and Bobby walked up his own to bump that ball.
- 1:34:22The suicide squeeze sure enough wasn't on because Boya didn't break from third.
- 1:34:44The one-nothing pitch is a curve that's low.
- 1:35:07Ball two, two-nothing.
- 1:35:08Now the Tiger infield comes in a little more.
- 1:35:09They figure with the two-nothing count, this might be the time to put the squeeze on.
- 1:35:11Here's the wind up.
- 1:35:12The pitch is over, strike 12.
- 1:35:15Two-and-one the count.
- 1:35:27Axel Osez in the on deck circle.
- 1:35:36Here's the wind up.
- 1:35:38The pitch is strike two on the outside corner, and Osez hit the end of the bat.
- 1:35:42As McKinley makes the foul-tip sign, rubbing his two hands together.
- 1:35:49He called it a strike and then made the motion.
- 1:35:51Two-and-two on Richardson.
- 1:36:03The lead is Boya at third base with Wilde. Yankees trailing 5-3.
- 1:36:08The wind up.
- 1:36:09The pitch is inside.
- 1:36:13And Wilson and Mawthee arguing a little on that play.
- 1:36:16A mighty close pitch.
- 1:36:17Bobby started to swing at it.
- 1:36:19Checked it.
- 1:36:23The count on Richardson, three-and-two.
- 1:36:43Now the payoff pitch.
- 1:36:45Curves popped in the air to left field.
- 1:36:48Not too deep, but Boya is tagging.
- 1:36:50Maxwell's under it.
- 1:36:51Makes the catch.
- 1:36:52Here comes the throw.
- 1:36:53He flies and he's in there with a perfect throw.
- 1:36:57A one hopper.
- 1:36:58A perfect throw to Wilson, but Boya beat the tag.
- 1:37:01He slid underneath it.
- 1:37:04Bobby Richardson's sacrifice slide.
- 1:37:06A not too deep left field brings in Cletus Boya.
- 1:37:11And it's now a 5-4 ball game with two out in the bottom of the sixth in the batter, Hector Osez, who has walked, sacrificed, and singled, one for one.
- 1:37:21No destroying error by Red Wilson.
- 1:37:24Gives the Yankees a break.
- 1:37:34Two out.
- 1:37:39Hector is lying to right field.
- 1:37:41That's in there for face-in.
- 1:37:43Alivito's up with it.
- 1:37:45And Hector Lopez lines the single to right field.
- 1:37:54W-O-K-O Albany.
- 1:37:58And that big round of applause for Roger Maris.
- 1:38:03Although Roger is 0-3 today, pops a second, fouled out to the catcher, and hit into a fourth place.
- 1:38:11He's been the big man for the Yankees this year.
- 1:38:15And the fans appreciate the fact.
- 1:38:19Two out.
- 1:38:20Lopez is second.
- 1:38:24Roger Lopez is first base.
- 1:38:27Hector Maris is outside for one.
- 1:38:30When Hector's got that right field stroke, there's nobody that can hit the ball there better than he can.
- 1:38:36On deck, Mickey Mantle.
- 1:38:43Getting a little action in the Tiger bullpen now.
- 1:38:47Rich Maris outside for two.
- 1:38:49Two-nothing.
- 1:38:56Hitchers have found out this year that there is no breathing space in this Yankee lineup.
- 1:39:03They got a bear down on every hitter.
- 1:39:10Two-nothing on Roger.
- 1:39:12Mitch is fouled over towards the Yankee dugout.
- 1:39:17Two-and-one the count.
- 1:39:30Norm Cash asking for time over at first base runs over now to talk with Marci.
- 1:39:48Two balls, one strike, two out.
- 1:39:49Detroit 5 Yankees 4, bottom of the sixth.
- 1:39:55Curve is popped in the air.
- 1:39:57The second baseman Frank Balding, moving under it in fair territory, makes the catch.
- 1:40:05For the Yankees in the bottom of the sixth, one run on two base hits.
- 1:40:09One Tiger error.
- 1:40:11One man left the score at the end of sixth full inning.
- 1:40:14Detroit 5 runs, five hits, two errors.
- 1:40:16New York 4 runs, nine hits, no errors.
- 1:40:18And we pause for station identification.
- 1:40:20Your station for music, news, and sports, this is Quality Modern WOKO, 1460 on the radio dial.
- 1:40:27Eleven minutes after four.
- 1:40:31And right now, with Gabler ready to go, and Red Wilson stepping into the bend.

- 1:42:09Don Mosse coming up.
- 1:42:13He started out shakily in the first inning, but has grown stronger as the game has progressed.
- 1:42:30Mosse grounded his short and sacrifice, drowning to Skaren. Gaber's pitch is over for a strike.
- 1:42:50One strike delivery. Swung on, there's a fly ball into left. Lopez moves under it, makes the catch.
- 1:42:58Two down.
- 1:43:01Now Eddie O, who took a third strike, then hit a home run and walked.
- 1:43:13It's 5-5, Yankees 4 at the seventh inning.

- 1:43:46Gaber to the windup again, the pitch swung on and missed. Strike two, nothing in two.
- 1:44:02Two balls, two strikes, and the pitch. Curve is low for a ball, one and two. Could have been a knucker.
- 1:44:09Sometimes it looks like a curve from upstairs by the way it acted the last second.
- 1:44:15The knuckleball.
- 1:44:21Two pitch, curve outside, 2-2. Hope it'll crossfire in the motion.
- 1:44:41Now the 2-2 delivery, swung on, lying down the left field line, and it's in there for extra bases. Bounces into the stands and becomes a ground rule double for Eddie O.

- 1:44:57Here's Frank Bowling who changed the game around with one swipe of the bat.
- 1:45:02After striking out in the first inning, rounding the third in the third, he had a three run homer with two out in the fifth inning.

- 1:49:08An error charged to Fernandez on the throw that bounced by Norm Cash.
- 1:49:20Mantle seems to have hurt his, re-aggravated his injured right knee, his first time at bat today.

- 1:52:05Fair hands, it throws to first, just in time to get him on a very close play.
- 1:52:10A good play by Eddie Yost.
- 1:52:14Boy that was a touch and go play at first base.
- 1:52:18McDougall is credit with a sacrifice, Eddie Yost just did get him.
- 1:52:22Mantle moves to second, two outs and the batter is Elston Howard.
- 1:52:32Howard was purposely passed in the first inning, line to left in the third, fly to center in the fifth.

- 1:54:21The left hander to the stretch, looks over at Mantle, here's the pitch and it's inside for ball three.
- 1:54:27Howard had the jackknife there for it being hit by that one.
- 1:54:32A three one count.
- 1:54:39Three balls, one strike.
- 1:54:48Two men out, Mossy into the stretch, Mantle leads off second.
- 1:54:51Here's the pitch and Howard swings and bounces it foul down the third base line, Crisetti catching it.
- 1:54:57Four count now.

- 1:58:00Get one off Ray Herbert to right field.
- 1:58:03Casey's called Richardson back over to the dugout.
- 1:58:08And now Bobby is coming out, McKinley is going over to ask Casey what's the delay.
- 1:58:20And McKinley pointing to somebody in the Yankee dugout,
- 1:58:31Joe Demastri is coming up to bat for Johnny Gabler.
- 1:58:36Mossy's pitch is inside for a ball.
- 1:58:41So Cleve Boyer comes through with his fourth homer and 17 runs batted in.

- 1:58:50Mossy's next pitch is outside for a ball, two and nothing.
- 1:58:56Boyer has been a full hitter and Casey's been trying to get him to learn to hit the right field
- 1:59:01and once in a while, lately he has been.
- 1:59:05He rolled that outside pitch to right field, all the way.
- 1:59:11Two nothing pitch to Demastri and therefore strikes.
- 1:59:16I was kidding Demastri, I asked him how many hits he got this season now.
- 1:59:19I knew he was nothing for two.
- 1:59:21He says, well, he says let's put it this way.
- 1:59:24Let's say that I just came out of my batting club.
- 1:59:28Two one pitch, swung on and fouled off upstairs, strike two, two two.
- 1:59:48That home run takes Bob Curley off the hook.
- 1:59:53The two two delivery is a little high, ball three.
- 2:00:01He cannot now be charged with a loss and so is not involved in the decision at all.
- 2:00:12The three two pitch to Demastri, swung on and missed, strike three and the side is retired.

- 2:18:30McLeish and Grimman relief. Anderson and Post homing for Cincinnati.
- 2:18:34Santos with two on for the Cubs.
- 2:18:37And the Cardinals lead the Braves, no they're tied up at three three last of the ninth.
- 2:18:41Buell and Klein, homers Bruton and two for Aaron.
- 2:18:45Fernandez leading off in the ninth inning. The pitch is in there for a strike.
- 2:18:49Chico grounded to Short. Single to left, lying to center.
- 2:18:53New York seven, Detroit six. Bobby Shantz in relief of Gabler who had relieved Turley.
- 2:18:59Bobby to the windup round comes the left arm. The pitch,
- 2:19:03swung on and loose out into Short right and it's in there for the base hit.
- 2:19:08He just punched it over second and the Tigers get the lead man on in the ninth inning.
- 2:19:16Time is called. Fernandez is going to get a runner.
- 2:19:22Fernandez normally doesn't need a runner, but apparently he hurt himself.
- 2:19:28Casey Wise going in to run for him.
- 2:19:32Fernandez has a muscle injury.
- 2:19:38And Casey Wise is going in to run.
- 2:19:45Now Red Wilson is the batter.
- 2:19:48Grounded to Short, fouled out to third and popped to second.
- 2:20:08McDougald and Shantz have gotten together.
- 2:20:14Red Wilson at bat. Wise on first, nobody out in the ninth.
- 2:20:19And Johnny Gross is on back to hit for Maupie. Bobby to the stretch.
- 2:20:23And the pitch. Swung on, there's the drive, hits it deep right.
- 2:20:27But Maris is getting under it near the barrier, right at the barrier, one away.
- 2:20:33That ball started out like it was going to go all the way.
- 2:20:37Wilson riding at screwball, breaking away from the right hand hitter.
- 2:20:41And it looked as if it was going all the way until you saw Maris finally stop and get under it right at the barrier.
- 2:20:48One down and Casey Singles coming out of the dugout now as Johnny Gross comes up.
- 2:21:06Gross heading for Maupie. Eddie Yost to follow. Now Casey's talking to Bobby.
- 2:21:16Let's see how he is.
- 2:21:29Casey's trying to decide whether to bring in Fisher or not. He's going to leave Shantz with it.
- 2:21:44Johnny Gross, 3-4-11, hitting 273.
- 2:21:53One out down the ninth. Yank seven, Tigers six. Gross back to right handed. Bobby to the stretch.
- 2:22:00Check of the runner and the pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike one, sharp curve.
- 2:22:07Gross was really wheeling.
- 2:22:10Again the stretch by Shantz, Wyves moves away. Here's the pitch.
- 2:22:14Swung on, hits foul down the left-field line. Ball going into the mezzanine. Strike two, nothing in two.
- 2:22:22No balls, two strikes, one out, one on.
- 2:22:31Shantz into the stretch. Wyves leads away from first. Here's the pitch and Johnny Gross takes a two ball way outside.
- 2:22:36Almost a wild pitch. Howard at the backhand. The ball breaking off to the right of the plate.
- 2:22:43One and two.
- 2:22:48Bobby again to the stretch. Wyves moves off first. Here's the pitch and Gross takes it outside. Ball two, so sharp, two-two.
- 2:23:00Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:23:06Again the stretch and the pitch to Gross. High, ball three now. Full count. Nothing in two and now the count runs to three and two.
- 2:23:19Bobby is trying for a little extra on those last three pitches and they are nowhere near the plate.
- 2:23:25Casey Wyves on first and one out may be traveling. Full count on Gross.
- 2:23:35The stretch, Wyves leads away and the pitch. It's just outside for ball four.
- 2:23:43Down to second goes Wyves, Gross walks. Casey's out of the dugout.
- 2:23:50Howard and Shantz picked on the pitch. That's ball four. Now the Tigers have two men on, one out and Casey's out of the dugout.
- 2:24:04That means Shantz, of course, automatically out now.
- 2:24:16Bobby came onto the eighth inning and pitched one and one-third inning, allowing two hits.
- 2:24:24Walk one, truck out one.
- 2:24:28And of course the runners are his responsibility. Bobby departs.
- 2:24:43Boy, I tell you, we've had some struggles here yesterday and today. Johnny James is coming in.
- 2:24:59Jimmy Dykes is countering the change of pitchers by sending up Neil Chrisley. They were power hitting left-handed batter to hit for Eddie Yost.
- 2:25:21Johnny James making his 22nd appearance. He worked one inning against the Tigers yesterday and gave up two hits in one run.
- 2:25:30Neil Chrisley will bat for Yost. Chrisley hitting.258.
- 2:25:41Casey Wyse on second, running for Fernandez and Gross, who batted for Mawsy and drew a walk on first base.
- 2:25:55Mantle and Maris throwing the ball back and forth in the outfield.
- 2:26:00The White Sox got a run on the 11th inning to beat Baltimore 2-1, Bailey in relief of score got the win. Jack Fisher all the way, the loser.
- 2:26:12Neil Chrisley comes up to bat for Eddie Yost with Wyse and Gross aboard. One out, ninth inning, Yanke 7 Tigers 6.
- 2:26:28James to the test and the pitch outside ball on.
- 2:26:50James to the test, here's the pitch.
- 2:27:03Yankees lead 3-0, 3-1, 3-2, then it was 5-3 Detroit, 5-4, then 7-5, then 7-6.
- 2:27:12That's where we are right now with Wyse on second, Gross on first, and a one out, ninth inning, Chrisley batting for Yost.
- 2:27:20Johnny James ready, delivers, and it's low ball 2-2-1.
- 2:27:28Two balls, one strike.
- 2:27:42Johnny James getting set, runners lead away. Here's the pitch to Chrisley, swung on line to right field for a face hit.
- 2:27:49Roger Maris cut loose a perfect throw from deep right field. On the line, an arm never hit the ground.
- 2:27:57And Casey Wyse has thrown out the plate on Neil Chrisley's pinch hit, swing to the right.
- 2:28:07Gross dropping at second. Now Casey's out of the dugout. Wow, what a clutch throw.
- 2:28:13One of the finest throws you've ever seen. And he had him out for something to spare, considering plays at the plate.
- 2:28:22And with Frank Bowling coming up, Casey's bringing in another pitcher.
- 2:28:31Roger Maris, who went hitless in his five times as fast, charged that ground ball and cut loose with a low line throw all the way into Howard.
- 2:28:42And Wyse was cut down at the plate. Two down and two on.
- 2:28:57So Jern's taking his warm-up tosses. One of them bounces away from Howard.
- 2:29:24And he's gone a while with a couple of his pitches there and wants a new ball to throw.
- 2:29:31With two men on base and Charlie Mack will do up next. I guess Wyse is not something you could afford at a time like this.
- 2:29:43And still a while with his fast ball that tails into the header.
- 2:29:48Frank Bowling steps in. He took a third strike, grounded a third, did a three-run homer off Charlie and grounded a third.
- 2:29:57And in growth on second, Neal Chrisley on first, two outs in the ninth, Yank seven, Tigers six.
- 2:30:18The Tigers lead away, Jern into the stretch, and the pitch. High ball one. That ball failed. One ball, no strikes.
- 2:30:43Growth leads off second, Chrisley off first, Jern into the stretch, and the pitch.
- 2:30:57That's outside, ball two. Two balls, no strikes. Two on, two out, and a two-nothing count on Frank Bowling.
- 2:31:26Howard returns to the plate. Jern checks with him, into the stretch now, runners lead away.
- 2:31:39And the two-nothing pitch in there, strike one, good one. Two balls, one strike.
- 2:31:58Bowling standing up there, ready. Growth moves off second, Chrisley off first, Jern into the stretch. Next around, and the pitch.
- 2:32:11Outside, ball three, three-one. He didn't miss a corner much. Wasn't very wild with that one, but enough, and it's a three-one count.
- 2:32:23Now, I don't know what Jimmy Dax will do here, whether he puts a take sign on or not, but Charlie Max will do up next.
- 2:32:33Three balls, one strike. Runners lead away from first and second, and the three-one pitch. Strike two, call, full count.
- 2:32:50So, we're down to the position where we keep going or don't go anymore. Growth and Chrisley will be off and running with the pitch.
- 2:33:05Full count, two out. Yanks, seven, Tigers, six, nine, winning the stretch by Jern. Runners ready to go.
- 2:33:13There they go, and the pitch is outside, ball four, and they're loaded up. And here's Charlie Maxwell coming up.
- 2:33:26One almost knew it had to come to this. Growth to third, Chrisley to second, bowling to first, and the batter, Charlie Maxwell,
- 2:33:37who walks, grounded to first, pops the short and triples the right center.
- 2:33:48Three men aboard and two out in the ninth inning. Charlie Maxwell digs in. A windup, and the pitch.
- 2:33:59Going on and missed, strike one. No balls, one strike. Whichever way the ball game goes, the crowd is loving it.
- 2:34:17Chrisley on third, Chrisley on second, bowling on first. Charlie Maxwell up there. A windup, three men lead away.
- 2:34:29And Maxwell takes it low for a ball, one and one, laid off the center. One ball, one strike.
- 2:34:52Time call for a moment.
- 2:35:02Three runners lead away to wind up the pitch to Maxwell. Inside, ball two, two and one.
- 2:35:16Two balls, one strike.
- 2:35:26Growth and Chrisley and bowling leading away from third, second, and first.
- 2:35:31And getting the sign to the windup. Here's the two-one pitch. Swung on and fouled off. Coming back towards the screen, and Howard cannot get it. It's up onto the screen just inches. Howard is right back to the screen. The ball missed, missing the screen by a couple of inches, and it's a two-two count.
- 2:35:52So the tension is still here. Fingernails back in time at Yankee Stadium.
- 2:36:06Two balls, two strikes, two outs, three men on, nine-punching, Yanks up and Tigers sixth.
- 2:36:12Yurin pitching to Charlie Maxwell. Gets the sign, the crowd beginning to roar.
- 2:36:22Gross Chrisley and bowling leading away. The windup, around comes the right arm, and the pitch is hung on in this strike three, and it's all over. The Yankees win it seven to six.
- 2:36:35Ryan Dern stayed with them.
- 2:36:39And the man in right field, Roger Maris, made the great throw.
- 2:36:48Now at C.
- 2:36:52The big start of the next game will be about 540. Whoa, another one. No runs, two hits, no errors, and three men left on.
- 2:37:06Tigers had two singles and two walks in the ninth inning. Now a great truck throw by Roger Maris knocking off the tying run, and then Dern, after walking the first man he faced to load the bases, tracks out Charlie Maxwell.
- 2:37:21So the total, the Yankees, seven runs, 11 hits, no errors, Tigers six runs, nine hits, and three errors. Don Mossey all the way. The loser, the winning pitcher is Johnny Gabler. Gaber, a record of three and three. Mossey now a record of five and six.
- 2:37:38Well, while you catch your breath after that exciting ball game, we'll give you about 20 minutes back with your individual stations while you talk that one over. Boy, there was more action in that ball game than you might find in a half a dozen other ones.
- 2:37:53A real crowd placer that had everybody on the edge of their seats until Smokey Maxwell struck out to end the ball game.
- 2:38:03Now the Yankees had won two thrillers from Detroit yesterday and then today an uphill battle. Pulling it out with three runs in the seventh and the standout today was Cleetus Floyd, the shortstop, who turned in some brilliant defensive plays.
- 2:38:21And then came through was the free run home run in the seventh inning, but actually was the measure of victory. So we'll have another one for you in about 20 minutes.
- 2:38:33Check around and who knows what may happen in that second one.
