- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: How are you doing today?
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: I'm good.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: How are you?
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: I'm good too.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: I just I just finished this movie.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Like as I was saying to you, I I was running late and like just managed to finish it.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: So it's fresh in your mind.
- 0:46SPEAKER_02: That's good.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: It's very fresh in my mind.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Um yeah.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: You just had your birthday as well yesterday.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Happy birthday for yesterday.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Oh, thank you so much.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: How was that?
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: It was really nice.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: So with the pandemic, it's a little weird.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: We can't really do much celebrating right now, but I ordered myself a cake, as I'm sure you saw.
- 1:05SPEAKER_02: I sent the picture.
- 1:07SPEAKER_02: So yeah, that's good.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: And I was just, you know, spending some time at home, getting some stuff done and just hanging out and relaxing.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And what else have you been up to lately then?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Not much.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: I mean, I work from home and I've been rehearsing a show in my spare time.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: I'm getting ready to play Laura in a production of The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: So really excited about that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: We're recording that actually um first couple weeks of May, and then it's gonna be able to be streamed.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: So oh cool.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: I'll have to watch that then.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: Is it um is it going out as like a ticketed event then?
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Um, we're we're not able to have a live audience because of the pandemic.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: So instead, we're going to record it as if it were a movie, and then people will be able to buy tickets and watch it online.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Got you.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: That sounds really interesting.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: And like Tennessee Williams stuff.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: I I don't know too much about it other than like Cow on Hot Tim Roof, I think.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Good, but like it's very intense, isn't it?
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: It is, it's very intense, and this is a very small cast.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: There's only four people.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: Um wow.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: So everybody really has to carry their own weight.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Um but this ver this play, it's uh it's a memory play, so everything is kind of from the narrator's perspective, which um kind of influences the audience in a way, but it's really interesting.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: It's the first Tennessee Williams play I've been in, so uh interesting experience.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Have you done a lot of acting then?
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Is that is that your uh main uh is that like a hobby or is it like uh something you're like fully into?
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean I would consider it a hobby at this point.
- 2:44SPEAKER_02: I did it in middle school and high school, so when I was younger, I was involved in it at like a school perspective.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: Um when I moved to where I live now, where like I moved when I got this job, and I got involved with the community theater as kind of a way to decompress after work and everything.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: Um, and I just absolutely fell back in love with it.
- 3:03SPEAKER_02: And I've been um every year that I've lived here, I think I've done two productions.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: That's really cool.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the last one I was in was Harvey.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: Um a movie also with Jimmy Stewart.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: And then before that, I was in Blythe Spirit.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, it's been it's been really fun.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what was your favorite one?
- 3:25SPEAKER_02: Oh, my favorite one.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: Um honestly, it's probably what I'm rehearsing right now, the glass menagerie, because it's just so emotional and an absolutely beautiful piece of writing.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: And it I'm so excited um to be able to portray this because a lot of um big names have played this part.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: So I'm excited to kind of add my tape.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm I'm no Karen Allen or Sarah Paulson, but um Oh well, Sarah Paulson played the role.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: Oh well.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: When um Wednesday out again, sorry, I you said like uh it's gonna be out um what next month?
- 4:07SPEAKER_02: Yep, so we're recording it May 17th, and it should be able to be streamed the week after that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: So I will of course let everybody know.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely be checking that out.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Um cool.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So you've come on today to talk about the movie Repo the Genetic Opera.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Yes, I have the DVD right here.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Whoa!
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: I wasn't you're the first person to pull out the DVD.
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: It's honestly one of my favorite movies, and now that you've seen it, you're probably like, what is wrong with her?
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Well, I'll say this.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: Okay, so it has 40% uh uh from critics, so it just just qualifies.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, and it has 73% from the audience.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: I will say straight off the bat, I absolutely hated it.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: I was expecting that, honestly.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: It's not everyone's coming.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: I I had like a real, real, like terrible reaction watching this.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Um it can be quite graphic.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Um I'm okay with that.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: That may not be for everyone, but uh I don't know what it is.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: It's like I'm okay with I'm okay with like graphic stuff.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: I'm okay with mus I like musicals, um I'm okay with like low budget, I like rocky horror stuff, so like I'm okay with like this sort of stuff.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't know what it was that I really didn't uh like about it.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: It was probably Paris Helton.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Honestly, I think she was fine.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I didn't even have a problem with her in it.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: Um, that's the thing I always tell people about this movie.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: I'm like, Paris Helton is in it, and they're like, oh my god, why?
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, so I was 17 when this movie came out.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Um so what 13 years ago.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: And I honestly don't remember how I came across.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I think it was Live Journal or Tumblr or one of course, it's like that that seems perfect for those places.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, and it has a cult following, much like Rocky Horror does.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: So over the years it's kind of you know, um become one of those cult experiences.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: But um yeah, I genuinely don't even remember how I came across it.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: But to this day, I mean I have the soundtrack on Spotify.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: I I just love it.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: And I don't know, should we get into the backstory of it a little bit?
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: Like what it's actually for people who maybe wanted, yeah.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Do you want to describe it?
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Because it's very confusing as well.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, uh I'm a little bit like a lot to take in for me.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: There's kind of two stories going on at once.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: Um, so for anybody who may not have heard of this movie before, it is um set in a post-apocalyptic world, I think 2056.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: Something like something like around those, like around that time, yeah.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Um, and basically what's happened is illness and uh a whole bunch of different pandemic type stuff has taken over and really affected the population.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: So mega company comes in um called Gene Co.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: And they offer, you know, quote-unquote designer organs that they it's really weird, but basically, hey at the end of your contract with them, they repossess the organs.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: So they have these, they're assassins called repo men.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: And the main character of this um is a 17-year-old girl who is unaware that her father is like the head repo man.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: Um, and he got roped into that because her his wife um was dating the head of the Gene Co.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: And then left for him.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: So it's kind of both stories intertwined, like the connection with Gene Co.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: And then the story with um Shiloh, who is the 17-year-old, um, played by Alexa Vega of Spy Kids Fame.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: Another great movie, but unfortunately that was a great movie.
- 8:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: Um so Shiloh has been told her whole life that she suffers from this incurable blood disease, but um, that's not the case.
- 8:44SPEAKER_02: Her father just couldn't cope with the fact that he lost her mother.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Um, so he wants to keep her close.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: And without giving too much away, in case people want to watch it, um I don't really know how to describe it without giving spoilers, but give spoilers to be honest.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: Like we talk like we'll talk about the whole thing.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: So Hilo isn't actually sick.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: Um her father has been um kind of like a case of like Munchausen by proxy, I guess you would say.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: He is making her sick, um, because he's being he has been blackmailed by the head of Gene Co.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Um roti.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: Um to God, this is really confusing the more that I'm talking about it out there.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: It's very confusing.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: That's what I mean.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: It's like it was a lot to take in, especially like because it's all a lot of it is sung as well.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Well, it's all sung, I guess.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: Like it's yeah.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you add so you're like really focused, you've got to really focus on it.
- 9:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you add in the songs and all the connections with other characters that come in, like blind Meg, who is Philo's godmother, but she doesn't learn that until like right before Blind Meg dies.
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: And there there's a whole repossession undertone of you never know who's going to be affected, like who's going to be the next one to have their organs repossessed.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Um basically at the end, everybody dies except Shiloh.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it's a real tragedy.
- 10:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: But she gets a fresh start, I guess.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: And I guess.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: Oh no, she's not the only one that doesn't die.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: There are there are the kids that don't die.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the three awful children.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Um reminds me of Succession in a way.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: Like Yeah, exactly like Succession, isn't it?
- 10:34SPEAKER_02: Like who's going to take over the company from their father, and he doesn't want to leave it to any of them because they all suck.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Um they're all the weirdest kids.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Like, absolutely awful.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't blame him.
- 10:49SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't want to leave the company to them either.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Not that he's any better, but like he's like at least a person.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: They don't seem like people.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: Because you've got the one that's addicted to like plastic surgery, you've got the other one who has an awful temper and will just like kill anybody who gets in his way.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: And then the other one who just wears other people's faces.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: Like, but then like the two kids are like the two of them, like the brother and sister, are kind of like incestuous almost as well.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: And there's like that weird undertone to it, which when I first got into this movie, I kind of like was like, what's going on here?
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: But the creators of it actually had uh it's based on a play that they did.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: Um all this kind of built into what is now repo.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: And they said over the course of the play, putting on the play, all the characters have changed because the initial play was um the head repo man um and the grave robber.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Those were the two main characters.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: Um and the grave robber kind of acts as the narrator here.
- 12:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: I don't think I mentioned that.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: So um he's kind of like the kind of like the only He's kind of distant from the from the he's kind of like the he separates himself from the story, but he's also like got kind of a look kind of thing like some stuff dotted throughout the whole movie, but like nothing too big.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Like the only neutral character because I don't think he's really but um maybe the morally gray character, whereas everybody else is kind of on separate aisles, like you're the villain and you're clearly not the villain.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Um he's kind of in between.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: But also, I would put Nathan's kind of like a little bit in between both as well.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because he kind of got blackmailed into doing the whole repo stuff, yeah.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Um, and he really does care about Shiloh, he just doesn't know how to let her be a 17-year-old girl.
- 13:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: Um into that whole thing with where she's like telling her father, like, I'm 17, there's that whole sequence, and then Joan Jett shows up out of nowhere.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Just a cameo from Joan Jett playing guitar.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, it's kind of all over the place.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: It it it really is.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: I think like first of all, this movie looks like shit.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: It's very um, it's very dark throughout.
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: There's like no, it's just very dark and dingy.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: It's all filmed digitally as well, um, which for the time was not a usual thing, like not not a common, not as common.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: Um and it's all filmed on one sound stage, and I think it's very noticeable.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: Um it's a cheap movie, it's like eight eight million.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:54SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, you can tell.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: And they even ran, apparently, I read that they even ran out of money at one point, and Paris Hilton um this like out of her own pocket, she went to um, she did like a nightclub appearance, got 50 grand for it, and held like and used that to fund the rest of the movie.
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: Yep, I remember hearing that too.
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: And she didn't get a producer credit on it, interestingly enough.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: I mean, maybe she didn't want it, but yeah, I would definitely have credited her with that if she like saved my movie.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: And also, like, she's she was someone that was apparently like so desperate to be in this movie.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: She was like really into it.
- 14:36SPEAKER_00: Um with her.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: Like, can you just imagine reading this part and being like, oh my god, I have to play this?
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Absolutely not.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: If I'd read this, I would not want to be part of it.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: And it's like her character is you know, basically an addict, um, addicted to getting plastic surgery.
- 14:56SPEAKER_02: She's made to be the idiot daughter.
- 14:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: Um, so I don't know if she was thinking, like, no offense to Paris Hilton, but maybe she saw herself in a way, like possibly, you know, like or maybe she's like trying to do it satirically on herself, like a satirical version of herself.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: I just can't imagine, you know, having seen this movie multiple times, and each time I'm just like, oh, these parts, like how how would you get people on board with this?
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: So Anthony Head, I understand.
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: Because he is he's done, he he's used to doing these kind of roles, these kind of campy, like he's done Rocky Horror in the past, he's done Buffy, you know, like he's used to this style of thing.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: So I understand him being involved.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Um what's his name?
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: The um where is it?
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Paul Savino.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: I do not understand taking this role.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Because he's playing like kind of like the ultimate villain.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: He's just like this horrible person who is like, oh, they didn't pay for their surgery, go take their eyes back.
- 16:07unknown: Yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: But then his voice is not bad.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: And I wasn't expecting it.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: He has like one really good part in it where he's like, he does like this authoretic thing in in uh in the car, I remember, and it was like, oh, that's pretty impressive.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: And then like the rest of the time, he's kind of like fine.
- 16:29unknown: Right.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: It's kind of like that talk singing stuff.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Um and then Alexa Vega.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: Um before this movie I didn't know she could sing.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: I had no idea she could sing.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: No.
- 16:43SPEAKER_02: Um so I I really like the fact that she's in this role.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 16:49SPEAKER_02: And then I don't know.
- 16:51SPEAKER_02: Um the one who plays the grave robber, Terence.
- 16:55SPEAKER_02: Um, I can never pronounce his last name, but he's actually one of the co-creators of it.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: Oh, that makes sense.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: So and so Terrence and Darren Smith, the other person who wrote the screenplay, they're the ones that did the play behind it initially.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Um, so I'm glad that because I think Terrence portrayed the grave robber in the play as well, aside from just writing it.
- 17:19SPEAKER_00: Um got you.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: That makes sense.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: But then there's like Pavi, one of the sons, the son with the mask, um played by a kind of a guy called Ogre.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: And he's got this Italian accent, and no one else in the show, like no one else in the movie is Italian.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it makes no sense.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: But then he doesn't say that much as well throughout the whole movie.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: He's kind of like the the least involved out of the three, I would say.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: He's kind of like the sex-obsessed um kind of, you know, he's always wearing a woman's face.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: Um like do they repossess faces as well?
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't I mean, I think because he's like kind of the son of the guy that runs the whole company, I think he they just repossess what they want, essentially.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: And he's kind of got like that fetish for the for the women's faces.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: And he's always just talking about how he's a ladies' man, and I'm just like, okay.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but he kind of is as well, that's the thing, and it's disgusting.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: I'm like what I guess they just see just they like him for the power.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: That's what I would think.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: Like, if I was in this universe and I wanted to, you know, not lose my life, I would try to align myself with people in power.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: I'd be like, hey, best.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: But then you might get roped the problem is you might get roped into kind of roti's kind of thing of like, oh now I have to help now I have to work for him my entire life.
- 18:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: And it's like, well, I don't know.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: This whole you there's no winning in this movie, I don't think in this world.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: There's no winning.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: Um and kind of I like it, actually, because it kind of shows that you know, not everything is going to be a perfect, happy, yeah, beautiful ending.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: And it just kind of gives you the ugly side of life, you know.
- 19:28SPEAKER_00: Also, Blind Mag is a real opera singer.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Sarah Brightman.
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:34SPEAKER_02: My girl right there.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: I love her.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 19:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: Um I'm actually a really big fan of her music.
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: Um, and I just think she is absolutely perfect in this.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: Like, absolutely perfect.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Um she's great in this, to be honest.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: Her death scene.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: Like that's a great scene.
- 19:56SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: It gives me like I like get like oh, because it's just so visceral and so um that's probably the most graphic part for me.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, absolutely.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: She literally gouges out her eyes, and then they cut the rope that she's suspended on, and she is literally like staked.
- 20:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she gets impaled on the fence.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: And it's and then they're like, oh no, no, that's part of the show.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: Uh no, she's dead.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Like she's 100% dead.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: But just the scene where she is gouging out her eyes, she's like, I really don't care.
- 20:34SPEAKER_02: I'm done with this.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah, I'm done.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: Like you can like you can send someone after me, but I'm just gonna take things into my own hands, literally.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Because the whole thing is with her that she's she's um she was blind and they get they've like gave her some eyes.
- 20:50SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: Um, but she signed away like a blood contract, essentially, they call it, where so she signed in away her life to work for roti for the and like she has to perform on stage for roti for the rest of her life.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: And she decides it's not worth it.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: If if she ever leaves, they can repossess her eyes.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: And they're like they're like good eyes, like she can project stuff.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Like it the whole futuristic post-apocalyptic thing is really cool to me because we're literally in the middle of a global pandemic right now.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: But like, can I imagine if anything like this ever actually seemed to be a reality?
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: Like, who would the number one company be in this situation?
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: Probably like Apple.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: Apple, uh, Amazon, I don't know.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Amazon, they would definitely have no problem repossessing people's organs.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Like, oh, this is my Amazon lung.
- 21:52SPEAKER_02: Just kidding.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Bezos needs to Bezos and Musk would kind of like fire out, I reckon.
- 21:58SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, that's terrifying.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: It is absolutely terrifying to think about.
- 22:04SPEAKER_02: But that's what this movie does.
- 22:06SPEAKER_02: It makes me think about it.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Because it's 2021 now.
- 22:09SPEAKER_02: Like 20.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: I know it's not that far off of this.
- 22:13SPEAKER_02: Although I'm sure people in the 60s thought by 2021 we'd have flying cars and such by now, and that's not really the case.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: They definitely did think that.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:23SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, so are you a fan of opera in general then?
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: I guess you said you're fan of Sarah Brightman, so you must be like kind of aware of opera at least.
- 22:33SPEAKER_02: Um not really as like not big into opera.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: Um, I like Sarah Brightman just in general because um she does kind of more pop stuff also.
- 22:48SPEAKER_02: And she was also involved in like the Phantom of the Opera.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: Um uh I believe she's worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber before.
- 22:59SPEAKER_02: Um I think actually, wait, I think they dated.
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: I have to know I have to verify that though.
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Hang on.
- 23:07SPEAKER_02: I could be saying the complete wrong thing, or and people listening to this are gonna be like, she's an idiot.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: She's a lot younger than him.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, hang on.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: They were married.
- 23:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, okay, yep.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: So I just said completely the wrong thing.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: People are gonna be like, wow, Kate is an idiot.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: They were married for six years.
- 23:25SPEAKER_02: No, so yeah, they were married, and um, that's how um I kind of got um into her because she did like the Phantom of the Opera and Song and Dance and all those other things.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: And um the role of Christine in the Phantom of the Opera was I think he wrote that specifically for her.
- 23:49SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 23:49SPEAKER_02: Which I think is really interesting because obviously they're not married anymore, but that role is still absolutely iconic.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, now I'm just gonna like a deep dive into her career reading about she has a really good Instagram, actually.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: She likes her Instagram is absolutely fascinating to me.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: Um she posts like fan art and stuff that people send into her, and it's just really cute.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Oh I just I just love her voice, and I just think she's very, very talented.
- 24:24SPEAKER_00: Um she's also older than I thought she was.
- 24:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, in in Repo, she doesn't really look that like she's I think she's supposed to be playing 30-ish.
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: She looks about 30-ish.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:38SPEAKER_00: So when now I'm saying she's 60 now, it's quite surprising.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: So Repo was what 13 years ago?
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: So yeah.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Definitely looks younger.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: Although, you know, I don't look like I'm 30.
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: I'm 32 as well.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: So um we're blessed with the younger gym.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: We are blessed, yes.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: Um, so you saw it when it came out then, I guess.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Did you say?
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: Right around the time that it came out, yeah.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: It was So you didn't see it in theaters then?
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: I didn't see it in theaters.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: Um because I think it had a limited release, but um, I was very involved in online communities like Tumblr and Live Journal, and I forget how I watched it, but it was probably some illegal way.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: So I hope I for that.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but then I got the DVD when it came out.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: You write you own it now, so I think you you've probably spent more money than most of the people have.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I exposed my younger sister to it, and she has the same taste that I do.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: So she was very excited um that I was going to be talking about this today.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: Um, so hi Courtney.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: I hope you are listening and you weren't just kidding about Hello Courtney.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Um shout out to Courtney.
- 25:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: Um do you know how much it made at the box office?
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: This is really funny.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: I don't, and I'm scared to find out because I'm sure it was a very low number.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: Try and take a let's have you take a guess what it made at the box office.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 26:07SPEAKER_02: Um well, how much did it cost to make, first of all?
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Eight and a half million.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say two million.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: 188,000, 126.
- 26:24SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Oh like I know it's a limited release, but that is awful.
- 26:32SPEAKER_02: That is very awful, and I think um they were God, that's awful.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: Which is funny because a couple of the songs were actually like shortlisted for the Oscars.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: But are you serious?
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, a couple of these songs in here were shortlisted for the Oscars, but they obviously weren't nominated.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know which which songs.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: Harris Hilton won like worst actress for a couple different that's a bit unfair.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: God, 180,000 out of an eight million dollar budget.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: Also, this was this movie has 56 songs.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: 56 songs.
- 27:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: Um the set they released like one version of the soundtrack and then a deluxe version, but the um the musical or the first version that they did of this, uh the 56 songs, I think they included all of them.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: So ready.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's why I'm like which songs were shortlisted because I I wouldn't even like know where to pick from.
- 27:43SPEAKER_02: Um the one that Sarah Brightman sings, The Chase the Morning.
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: I remember that one was shortlisted.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: That does make sense then.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: That specifically.
- 27:52SPEAKER_02: But I don't remember the other two.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: I don't remember any of the songs other than that.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: I remember like the opening.
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: And then uh the one song The Grave Robber sings always in my head for some the Zydrate one where it's talking about all the drugs.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: So maybe uh the zy zydrate in the movie is basically like a drug that you inject before you get the surgeries done.
- 28:24SPEAKER_02: Um so that's what everyone's after for the most part.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: Um it's illegal, so yeah, because there's like um there's it's like a normal version that the the uh that gen Gene Co.
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: kind of like produce themselves, and then it's like the illegal version, like the the off-brand um that they take directly from the corpses, which is why grave robbing is illegal in the context of the movie.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Well grave robbing's illegal in general, but and that's kind of like the opening, but like um when she's cut when uh Shilo is like trying to capture like a bug.
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh that's not entirely clear what she's doing there.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Like I wasn't sure what she was doing there.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so Shiloh's whole thing is that she is supposed to stay inside all the time because of her blood disease that she thinks she has.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: Um, but he sneaks out and she likes to collect like things from the outside world.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: So she is trying to catch a bug because um that's cool to her.
- 29:32SPEAKER_00: But it looks like a special kind of bug.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: It looks like it's all like illuminated and um I don't know.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: It look it looks like it's got kind of like something special about it.
- 29:42SPEAKER_02: Maybe they'll have different bugs in the year 2057.
- 29:45SPEAKER_00: I hope not.
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: Um so that's so initially I thought she was trying to capture that because um it was trying it was gonna help her in some way, but like that then it's kind of just like it's nothing happens with that.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: So I was like, okay, fine.
- 30:02SPEAKER_00: And then um, but she's she's like basically um outside, and then like as she's outside with that going on, there's all the grave robbing going on, and she spots the grave robber, and she's not sure if like that's her imagination or not at first.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Uh she initially thinks that she's she's like making the whole thing up because yeah, she gets caught um and then the one guy says I'll let her go, yeah, which she then realizes her dad.
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: Um and he tells her like it was all a dream, like you d this wasn't real.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 30:37SPEAKER_00: Um, because she wakes up in her bed, basically.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: So you're like, Well, no, that definitely happened.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: But at the time she realizes she doesn't realize it's her dad, she doesn't know who it was.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: But at the end of the movie, when she learns that her dad is this awful killing machine, yeah.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Um, that's a whole thing.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: In the beginning, they were going to kill her because they thought she was, you know, she was the grave robber.
- 31:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: Um, but he saved her.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: And also, she's got no hair, but she wears a wig.
- 31:13SPEAKER_00: That's another thing about her.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Um so like when she wakes up initially, you see her without hair for the first time, you're like, oh well, maybe maybe she did dream it because um she doesn't have hair, but then she puts on the wig, and you're like, oh wait, no, I see what's going on here.
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: I don't think they ever really touch on the the wig part of that.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: Like, is that I don't think they ever really address that as being part of her supposed illness.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: No, but I guess it's because she's being poisoned throughout the whole movie.
- 31:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:46SPEAKER_00: Because of that, she's kind of like lost her hair.
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: I think that's a good thing.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: That's what I assume, yeah.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: But they never really address it.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: It only comes out when you realize, like, oh, her dad is making her sick.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:59SPEAKER_00: Um what is she what is she being poisoned with as well?
- 32:03SPEAKER_00: Do they ever say?
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: No.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 32:07SPEAKER_02: They just say, like, I think it's just addressed as like, oh, he's putting things in your in your drinks or something.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: Or something like that.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Um, kind of like the same thing that um Rati did to Marnie to make it seem like um Nathan killed her.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: So lots of feeling in this movie.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: It's it's a lot.
- 32:35SPEAKER_00: There's so much that happens as well, if it was like, and then and I don't know how they fit it into 98 minutes because like it's so many, so many songs, so many things happening.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Do you think that it would have been better received if they just stuck to one of the plots?
- 32:54SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:54SPEAKER_02: Also instead of having the intertwining plots.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: But do you also know that this was supposed to be like the middle part of three movies?
- 33:04SPEAKER_02: Yep, I do know that they wanted to do a prequel and a sequel, but um I think uh I think the rights were bought from them.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: So they don't have ownership of it anymore.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's sad.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but the two people who created um this, you know, Darren and Terrence, they made another movie that I haven't seen yet.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but another kind of really dark um movie musical called The Devil's Carnival.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, I've heard of that.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: On my list of things to watch.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: Um, I haven't yet, but a lot of the same cast members from Repo show up in that.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: Oh, interesting.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Is that before or after?
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Um, I'm not sure.
- 33:45SPEAKER_02: Uh I think Devil's Carnival was 2012.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: So interesting.
- 33:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I haven't seen it yet.
- 33:54SPEAKER_02: Um, I haven't found anywhere where it's streaming.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, it's on my list for sure because I love the dark apocalypse.
- 34:03SPEAKER_00: This was hard to find actually as well.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: This one was hard to find online.
- 34:07SPEAKER_00: Um the uh oh yeah, so the director is also the the director of this, um what's his name?
- 34:15SPEAKER_00: Darren Darren Lynn Boozman.
- 34:18unknown: Booseman.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: He's um he's most famous for like directing the Saw movies, a lot of the Saw movies.
- 34:25SPEAKER_00: And he's done the most he's doing the most recent one as well, uh the newest one as well, that's supposed to come out with Chris Rock and um I think Sam Leno Jackson's in it.
- 34:34SPEAKER_02: Right, the Spiral, right?
- 34:36SPEAKER_02: That's the first one that's coming out in May.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Oh and that'll be interesting because he like it these movies this movie does kind of have that like cheap saw vibe to it.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: Right, yeah.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: And it's like it like you know it was filmed professionally, but it doesn't feel like it.
- 34:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: It just feels very cheap.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: It feels yeah, it feels like uh uh like an indie production, I guess.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: Um so like oh yeah, it does say based on the necrom necromerchant's debt by Terrence.
- 35:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's the that's the play that um they did.
- 35:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: So Darren Smith, I thought you were saying Darren Smith was the uh director at first, because it was Darren.
- 35:27SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, there's two Darrens, it's confusing.
- 35:31SPEAKER_02: Terrence is the only one I think that appears actually in the movie.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: Right, okay.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: Have you seen the because you know that they made this originally as like a 10-minute like presentation?
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: They did.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: I did know that and I haven't seen that because I'm not available anywhere.
- 35:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I haven't been able to find it anywhere.
- 35:51SPEAKER_00: Like, if anybody has access to it, please I'm not sure if it was ever released, but yeah, I was curious.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: I'm very curious to see what that pitch was like and what how it looked and everything.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Because that's a completely different cast from what I remember.
- 36:05SPEAKER_00: Right, I can't imagine it was the same cast, yeah.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: I think um Shawnee Smith, I never know if I'm saying her name correctly, but I think she was in it as like the Paris Hilton role.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 36:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: But do you know what was part of it then?
- 36:21SPEAKER_00: Like was it just like a just random various scenes or something?
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: I have no idea.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: Oh, you don't even know it, yeah.
- 36:26SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: If anybody has access to it or knows about it, please.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: My DMs are open.
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Yes, please let us know, because I'm very good.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: I would watch that as well.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: Um Yes, I do you kind of like want to talk about let's talk about the music then.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:48SPEAKER_00: So like I said, I don't remember much about the music other than even though I've just watched it, I don't have much memory of it other than like the couple of songs.
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: But like who do you think kind of shines in this uh music?
- 37:04SPEAKER_02: Musically, I would definitely say um Anthony for sure.
- 37:09SPEAKER_02: Um his voice and his voice is great.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: It completely fits the character, and it's evident that he's done work like this before.
- 37:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:18SPEAKER_02: Um, but obviously, and then obviously Sarah Brightman, you have, who is a trained professional, also like this before.
- 37:27SPEAKER_02: Um, her voice just fits Meg to perfection.
- 37:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:32SPEAKER_02: But again, I I think I said earlier, I was really impressed with Alexa Vega because I did not know she could sing.
- 37:38SPEAKER_02: And I think she portrays the whole um the emotions of the 17-year-old girl really well.
- 37:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: And I think she would have been like 18, only 18 herself here, or like 19 or something.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: I think so, yeah, because I don't think she's much older than us.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: No.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Um, but she really like impressed me with everything that she sings, especially the um the song at the very end where her father's dying.
- 38:05SPEAKER_00: And that's probably her best performance out of it.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's really emotional, and you can hear how brokenhearted she is in her voice.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: And I think compared to everything else in the movie, I think that's the most memorable to me.
- 38:25SPEAKER_02: Um, but and I also love some of the, you know, I guess bigger ensemble numbers, like the Zydrate Anatomy one.
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Um that I think that's the probably the catchiest.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Or you know, that one is in my head all the time.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, I think Anthony, Sarah, and Alexa to me are the ones that stand out the most.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: And then obviously Terrence does a great job because he's so familiar with the character and the work, but um, those three I think stand out.
- 38:57SPEAKER_00: I would agree.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: Um, I guess like, what do you think about the Paris Hilton stuff in it then?
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: Like, do you think she's good in it or do you think she's kind of just there?
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, I have nothing against Paris Hilton.
- 39:15SPEAKER_02: I think she's a very smart person who has played a role very well throughout her.
- 39:20SPEAKER_02: I would agree, yeah.
- 39:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I just think for the purpose of this movie, I almost feel like they cast her just to kind of add a big name to the production and to try to get more people to watch it.
- 39:32SPEAKER_00: It's definitely possible.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: And in terms of her singing in it, um, no comment.
- 39:42SPEAKER_02: Um, I do think she plays the part very well.
- 39:46SPEAKER_02: I don't think she really deserved a worst actress award for it.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: No, no, um, because the daughter is supposed to be this, you know, spoiled brat, and that's the role that she's played for so long.
- 39:58SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm a spoiled rich girl.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: Like, that's that's the part.
- 40:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: Um, but in terms of singing, I think auto-tune may have benefited them in terms of in terms of Paris' character, but I think I don't think she's awful.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Um honestly, I think the worst in terms of singing in the movie is I'm so sorry to say this, but I think Paul Servino is probably the worst.
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I kind of see that.
- 40:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:31SPEAKER_02: And maybe it fits the character, like you know?
- 40:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:36SPEAKER_02: No, I'm not a casting director, so I don't know what went behind this, but yeah.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: And what about, I guess, like what about the kind the kind of graphic, graphic uh violence and and gore in this movie, then like do you think it fits or do you think it's kind of uh a bit too much, like taking it a bit too far?
- 40:58SPEAKER_00: Do you think it's like very much uh what it leans on to make it a movie?
- 41:05SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: So I mean the movie I you know, the plot of the whole repossession plot.
- 41:12SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's supposed to be graphic.
- 41:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Do I think sometimes it went too far?
- 41:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there are maybe some scenes where I was like, I don't really need to see this person's intestines being ripped out.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Um and play it like a puppet.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 41:27SPEAKER_02: Like that I can handle blood and gore, and it doesn't bother me at all.
- 41:32SPEAKER_02: But there are some scenes in this where I'm just like, okay, I'm gonna fast forward a little bit because I don't really want to see that.
- 41:38SPEAKER_02: But for the purpose of the movie itself, I think it all works.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't think they really went too over the top.
- 41:46SPEAKER_02: Um, because it is supposed to be a graphic representation of what this world is.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and the repo men are assassins, they're not just like friendly people, like, oh, we're here to take your car.
- 41:58SPEAKER_02: No, they're gonna take the organs out of your body.
- 42:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, there are definitely some scenes where I'm like, okay, that's a bit much.
- 42:08SPEAKER_02: Like you've got people hanging upside down, and he's just slicing into them.
- 42:11SPEAKER_02: And yeah, sometimes it's a little too much.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: I guess it kind of adds at the same time, it does kind of add to the I was gonna say the camp like feel to it, but I guess that's not really what it is.
- 42:28SPEAKER_00: It's more like um I saw the horror feel of it, I guess.
- 42:33SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 42:34SPEAKER_02: And there's this one uh um the thankless job scene where you see everything from Nathan's perspective.
- 42:40SPEAKER_02: He's literally just like dancing around with the organs that he's harvested and just you know, um kind of making a mockery of it.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: Um, and that, like you said, it adds to the the camp horror aspect of it.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: Like with another cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show, you don't really, I mean, the violence is more implied, it's not as yeah, but here it's just right in your face.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: Do you think it would have benefited though if it'd gone the Rocky Horror route, or do you think it would have uh held it back?
- 43:17SPEAKER_02: That's a really interesting question because if you have a whole movie built on this, you know, bloody, you know, bloody world, basically.
- 43:30SPEAKER_02: Um I don't know.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: But you look at like Sweeney Todd or something.
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: And that's like Yeah, Sweeney Todd, yeah.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know.
- 43:41SPEAKER_02: Hey, that's really in your face kind of too.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: I mean, you don't see as much of the violence, but when you are faced with the fact that they're eating these meat pies, which Yeah, but they don't show it as much as like this would show it.
- 43:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: Do you know what I mean?
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so maybe dialing it, dialing it back a little bit.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Would have attracted a wider audience because not everyone can handle that amount of blood and gore.
- 44:07SPEAKER_02: Like there's a reason, like horror is a very specific genre.
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: Very much so, yeah.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: And um, not everybody is comfortable seeing that.
- 44:18SPEAKER_02: Um, so while I may not have a problem with it, the next person listening to this might be like, oh, it's bloody, I don't want to watch that.
- 44:26SPEAKER_02: And that's totally fine.
- 44:28SPEAKER_02: So maybe they would have attracted a wider audience if it was more I think they would.
- 44:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 44:34SPEAKER_02: If it was more camp instead of horror.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: I think it kind of just tries to I think it leans too much into like one side of it and not enough into the, and it doesn't like balance it well.
- 44:47SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: That's a good, that's a really good point too, because you see a lot of the um a lot of the darker side of it and not really a lot from Shiloh's perspective, you know, like Shiloh's kind of like the good side of everything.
- 45:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: She is this innocent person who's not involved in anything that her father's doing.
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: She's kind of being used by both sides, and she is like not party to the violence at all.
- 45:17SPEAKER_02: Um but then you see so much of it from her father's perspective, from Roddy's perspective.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, a little bit of balance would have been good also.
- 45:30SPEAKER_00: Um, so you said this is a cult classic now.
- 45:33SPEAKER_00: Do you do you have you talked to people about it that are fans of it as well?
- 45:37SPEAKER_00: And do you know what what's like what's kind of the vibe there?
- 45:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, I've talked to a couple other people who have watched it throughout like throughout the years.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: Um uh I don't really talk to many of the people um before I lose touch with people over the years.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: Um, but when I first watched this, there was a a community of people on Live Journal that really enjoyed it.
- 46:00SPEAKER_02: And I know um from just hearing about it over the years and following up with what you know the creators and the directors are doing.
- 46:08SPEAKER_02: Um there are um people who will like watch the movie, like dress up as the characters and um kind of like people and dress up and do the songs and everything, and um I think it definitely has a very specific following.
- 46:31SPEAKER_00: So if you were to go and like so so, like you know, with Rocky Horror, they have like people that dress up as the characters, and you said that people dress up as these uh as these ones, who would you go as if you were to go to school?
- 46:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's a good question.
- 46:47SPEAKER_02: Honestly, I think I would dress up as Amber.
- 46:52SPEAKER_02: I think that would be really fun.
- 46:54SPEAKER_00: So you have she has some good outfits, but would you go with her with like the face off?
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: Ooh, no, I'd probably go with her specifically from like the scene with the grave rubber, like the Zydrate scene.
- 47:07SPEAKER_03: Right, right.
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: I love that outfit.
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: Like that feels very lard croft to me almost in a way, with like the leg bands and the leather and everything.
- 47:16SPEAKER_02: But if not Amber, I think I'd dress up as blind mag, like maybe like younger blind mag, because I just love that dress.
- 47:24SPEAKER_02: Um, or maybe do like like a gender bent grave robber or something.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: I was thinking I'd probably go as a grave robber.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: I think that'd be fun.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, that's really fun.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, like people dress up for and um at one of the Comic Cons, like the Comic Cons.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: Um I forget which year, but they did like a special screening of this too.
- 47:47SPEAKER_02: So probably it has people who Yeah, it's got a fan base.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: Um I mean do a screening at Comic Con.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: That's do you mean do you mean the San Diego Comic-Con as well?
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: Or like another one?
- 48:01SPEAKER_02: No, I think it was San Diego.
- 48:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think 20 either 2010 or 2011.
- 48:07SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:09SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 48:10SPEAKER_02: Yep, nope, it was re-released in a special screening at the 2010 San Diego San Diego Comic Con International.
- 48:17SPEAKER_00: Oh wow.
- 48:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:18SPEAKER_00: That's really cool.
- 48:19SPEAKER_00: I didn't I had no idea.
- 48:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: So clearly to get that kind of I mean that was 2010, that was what, 11 years ago, but still.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: And then so this came out in 2008.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: So two years afterwards, then, yeah.
- 48:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, two years after that awful box office performance.
- 48:39SPEAKER_00: Probably made more money there.
- 48:41SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, I'm still not over that number.
- 48:43SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 48:45SPEAKER_00: Oh that's so crazy.
- 48:50SPEAKER_00: Um so other than that, like I guess um yeah, we've kind of talked about like uh a lot of the characters and everything.
- 49:00SPEAKER_00: We talked about I don't know, you said Rottti is your is your worst the worst one for you.
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: I think so.
- 49:07SPEAKER_00: In terms of singing.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, is he like the worst character in jet in the whole movie for you as well?
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: No.
- 49:14SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's the worst character.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: He's one of them, but I don't personally for me, I don't think he's he's not my personal worst.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: I think um this might be controversial, but I think the worst character in the movie, um, just in terms of his actions and um I think it's Nathan.
- 49:35SPEAKER_02: Interesting, yeah.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Um and again, this might be a controversial take, but you have this man who um, you know, I know he was blackmailed into it, but um to do the things that he did to his daughter, I I don't I don't see any kind of redemption.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: It's not redeemable, is it?
- 50:01SPEAKER_00: I agree with that.
- 50:02SPEAKER_02: No, like you're making your daughter sick, you're telling her all these things are wrong with her, you're gaslighting her into thinking there's something wrong with her, all because you miss your wife.
- 50:12SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm sorry, go to therapy.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, also one thing we should make clear is that the wife died um during like not during labor, but like they could only save one of them, and he saved the baby, who that's why he's like being overprotective now.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: That's one of the reasons he's being overprotective now.
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: So I get the fact that you're maybe upset with the choice you had to make, but again, don't treat your daughter that way.
- 50:38SPEAKER_02: Like don't I don't know.
- 50:42SPEAKER_02: It just it really just rubs me the wrong way, the things that he does.
- 50:46SPEAKER_00: I agree.
- 50:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 50:48SPEAKER_02: And then obviously Roddy has his own horrible like he he is the one responsible for Marnie's death.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: He's also dying as well.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: I don't know if we mentioned that.
- 50:59SPEAKER_02: Yep, he's dying throughout the whole movie, and he does die at the end.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: Um he's dying, he's actually dying of a disease, and like um he's gonna leave it to like one of the kids, but he's like not clear who's gonna leave it to.
- 51:13SPEAKER_00: So that's where the succession thing kind of comes into play.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: And he doesn't want to leave the company to any of his idiot children, so that's why he takes an interest in Shiloh, because he still has a thing for Marnie after all these years, even after he's the one responsible for killing her.
- 51:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:31SPEAKER_00: Um God, this ready is like succession.
- 51:33SPEAKER_00: I guess it's kind of like a thematic thing, it's like a very uh it's like uh a trope, isn't it?
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: I guess.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 51:40SPEAKER_02: Like, yeah.
- 51:42SPEAKER_02: Um, like now I'm just thinking about like a succession recast of movie.
- 51:50SPEAKER_00: That would be better.
- 51:51SPEAKER_00: I'd like that.
- 51:52SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 51:55SPEAKER_02: I'm so sorry to all succession fans.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: I love succession as well.
- 52:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: Succession season three coming soon.
- 52:04SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, it's filming.
- 52:06SPEAKER_00: Is it finished filming yet?
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: I think it's still filming.
- 52:08SPEAKER_02: I think they're still filming.
- 52:09SPEAKER_02: Um the whole thing with the three kids, you know, two sons, one daughter, dad trying to figure out who's gonna succeed him.
- 52:18SPEAKER_02: Um it's it's a very interesting trope.
- 52:21SPEAKER_00: It's also the Trump thing, if we're really gonna get into it.
- 52:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 52:25SPEAKER_02: And the Murdochs and all that.
- 52:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 52:27SPEAKER_00: Well, the Murdochs is where it came from, isn't it?
- 52:29SPEAKER_00: Like that's where um Foot Succession came from.
- 52:32SPEAKER_00: Um but like uh I wish they'd kind of shown more of the mum and like the backstory there.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: Right, because she she really is a catalyst for so much of what happens.
- 52:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, her death, um the whole blackmail, um her choosing to leave Roddy first of all to be with Nathan, that kind of sets all of this into motion because Roddy just can't get over it.
- 53:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 53:02SPEAKER_02: Um, but I do wish they had shown more of her because I feel like she is such a vital character, and she's just kind of I think she's only shown twice.
- 53:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she is.
- 53:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:13SPEAKER_00: And the other thing is I wish they'd shown what made the kids that way.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 53:20SPEAKER_00: Because why are they so strange?
- 53:21SPEAKER_00: Like what is going on there?
- 53:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 53:24SPEAKER_00: Because they don't they don't like because Rossy is like still a like we said, like he's like kind of he's he's not a good person, but he's still a normal person.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 53:34SPEAKER_00: He's not a caricature of something, like he's like very they are really aliens.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 53:42SPEAKER_00: Whereas everyone else also everyone else in the movie is kind of just like they're not like they're they're weird, they're weird, but they're not like dis they're not insane.
- 53:52SPEAKER_00: Like they're they're not like those three characters.
- 53:55SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 53:56SPEAKER_02: Those three kids are just they're aliens.
- 54:01SPEAKER_02: That's the only way I can describe it.
- 54:03SPEAKER_02: Um, especially Pavi.
- 54:05SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 54:06SPEAKER_00: What is that character?
- 54:07SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 54:09SPEAKER_02: Absolutely bizarre.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 54:13SPEAKER_00: Absolutely bizarre.
- 54:14SPEAKER_00: I truly cannot explain that character.
- 54:15SPEAKER_02: Like what uh he looks- but now you're wishing we had gone with Cutthroat Island, huh?
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: I haven't seen that either, to be honest.
- 54:27SPEAKER_00: I hadn't seen that.
- 54:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, someone should go, someone should discuss Cutthroat Island with you.
- 54:33SPEAKER_00: Maybe you can come back and discuss that as well.
- 54:35SPEAKER_02: I would love to.
- 54:36SPEAKER_02: I will take an opportunity to talk about Gina Davis.
- 54:39SPEAKER_02: Let me tell you.
- 54:40SPEAKER_00: I was I was half expecting her to be in this as well, based on your like based on your movie.
- 54:45SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, I would die for Gina Davis to be in this movie, actually.
- 54:50SPEAKER_00: Like I was like, I was like, Kate is only gonna pick a Gina Davis movie.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: It was gonna be a Carol Kane or Gina Davis movie, but then I was like, no, I really want to talk about this.
- 55:03SPEAKER_00: What was Cutthroat Island racing?
- 55:05SPEAKER_00: Do you remember?
- 55:06SPEAKER_02: I think Cutthroat Island was 38.
- 55:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 55:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:10SPEAKER_00: See, I've heard things about that.
- 55:12SPEAKER_00: I've never seen it.
- 55:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's um it deserves the rating.
- 55:17SPEAKER_00: Would you have been able to defend it?
- 55:20SPEAKER_02: Uh for Gina Davis, I would try.
- 55:23SPEAKER_00: Okay, so let's let's hear your kind of defense of this then.
- 55:26SPEAKER_00: Like what what is redeemable about this movie?
- 55:29SPEAKER_00: What is defend what is defendable about it?
- 55:31SPEAKER_02: I think the concept in general is what redeems it because it's so unique in what it does.
- 55:39SPEAKER_02: And obviously there are post-apocalyptic futuristic movies that have been made before, but this presents the world in a way that I haven't seen in any other movie.
- 55:49SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 55:50SPEAKER_02: Where everybody is just so intensely concerned and obsessed with their appearance and everything is designer, and it you can basically genetically modify any part of your body in this movie, and it can be taken from you at any time as well.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: And I think it's a really good concept commentary, not just on you know, consumerism, capitalism, whatever, but it's just a commentary on us as a people.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: And maybe that's going a little too far, but uh that's what I think.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: And you know, I think it's probably the most interesting um apocalyptic movie that I've seen.
- 56:36SPEAKER_02: Um and I think that's what makes it worth watching because you get to see the world in a way that not a lot of other movies show, like because in other, you know, post-apoc you have robots and you have all kinds of other stuff, but this is just dealing with regular people um and the jobs that they have and the way that they've adapted to what the world has become.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: So yeah, and it makes me think if anything like this does happen in the future, how would I act?
- 57:09SPEAKER_02: Like, how would I respond to this?
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: You know?
- 57:12SPEAKER_00: And how would you?
- 57:15SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: That's the thing.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: I you're faced with this um dilemma, moral dilemma.
- 57:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like would you sacrifice your morals to survive?
- 57:28SPEAKER_02: You know, or would you just accept your fate and be like, okay, it's my time.
- 57:36SPEAKER_00: It's my time, but they're gonna take everything away.
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: They're gonna use my organs.
- 57:40SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 57:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's a horrible thought.
- 57:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's interesting.
- 57:46SPEAKER_00: Um one thing we haven't really discussed actually is like why it's an opera, I guess.
- 57:55SPEAKER_00: Like why have they decided to go that kind of uh what do you think?
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: Do you think it's because it's a tragedy?
- 58:04SPEAKER_00: Do you think that's why they went with it as an opera?
- 58:06SPEAKER_02: I think so, and I think just because the subject matter is so dramatic and theatrical, yeah, I don't think I don't think anything other than opera would have like I can't picture this being performed the way that like rent or hairspray is.
- 58:24SPEAKER_00: Oh god.
- 58:26SPEAKER_02: Like opera is the only thing that fits because it's the only genre that suits a tragedy, I feel like.
- 58:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's true.
- 58:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I would agree.
- 58:38SPEAKER_00: Um cool.
- 58:39SPEAKER_00: Do you have any um final thoughts on this?
- 58:41SPEAKER_00: Or if not, we can move on to the final segment.
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: If we've if you talk if we missed anything that you wanted to talk about it.
- 58:47SPEAKER_02: No, I'm just glad I got a chance to, you know, hopefully share this with more people.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: And if anybody watches it, you're really curious to hear what their thoughts are.
- 58:55SPEAKER_00: And um I would definitely recommend watching it, despite my absolute hate for it.
- 59:00SPEAKER_00: I would definitely say it's very much worth seeing because it's it's mind-boggling.
- 59:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's an it's an experience, it really is.
- 59:10SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, uh, I don't have anything else to really say about it except I will probably watch it at least once a month until the day I die.
- 59:21SPEAKER_00: So that's oh yeah.
- 59:23SPEAKER_00: So is that how much you have watched it?
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: I watch it very frequently.
- 59:27SPEAKER_02: Um not as often as I'd like to anymore, but it is one of the movies that I when I'm having a bad day or something, I it shouldn't be a comfort movie, but it is.
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is not a comfort movie.
- 59:39SPEAKER_02: It's familiar to me at this point, you know.
- 59:42SPEAKER_02: Um, but I really do love it.
- 59:44SPEAKER_02: And I love uh the look on people's faces when I tell them what it's about and everything.
- 59:52SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, I watch it frequently, not as frequently as I used to.
- 59:55SPEAKER_00: How many times do you think you've seen it?
- 59:58SPEAKER_02: Oh god, maybe 30.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: 30 or 40.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_00: Um I don't think I could watch this more than once.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_02: Well, I'm glad you did watch it for this.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm I'm glad you suggested it.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_00: Um, because it's so wild.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_00: I I've never seen anything like this movie.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's definitely something you have to watch at least once.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_02: And then if you're like, I hate it, you can say, okay, I watched it and I hate it.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I do appreciate trying something new.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_00: I'm always appreciative of that of that as well.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_00: And so like I I do like that they kind of like challenge themselves to make this sort of thing, and it's it's something that nobody has done before.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I really do want to see the one that they made after this, the Devil's Carnival.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: Um, I really I really want to find it somewhere to see how this um compares to Repo.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_00: I've heard less about that, so I reckon that this is probably the better movie, but like, yeah, it'll be interesting.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_00: I will I will definitely look that up as well.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_00: Um okay, so let's move on to the final segment then, which is the reverse of this, which is a movie that critics and fans universally love that you think is a bad movie.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_01: Oh god, I'm gonna get cancelled.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: No, you're not.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: I've had people say so many big movies, you're not gonna get cancelled.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_02: Okay, so a movie that everyone loves, but I think is bad.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_02: The social network.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_00: It's been said before as well, so you're not gonna get canceled.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_02: I did not like I do not like the social network.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: I thought it was boring.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_02: I did not think any of the performances were good.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_02: So that is my that is my choice.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_00: Uh so what what yeah, you said so you it's not like you don't like anything about it.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_00: So, like, do you want to go into more specifics then?
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: Can you go into more specifics?
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's just a thing that I have with the actors in it, but I'm not really fans of any of them.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_02: Um except maybe Rooney Mara.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_02: Um I I like her and I like Brenda's song.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_02: Um, but I'm not a fan of like Andrew or Jesse or like I just hated it because of that.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_02: If I don't like an actor, it's really hard for me to like anything that they're in.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_00: I get that.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: I get that.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: I I I don't like Justin Timberlake in it, and I'm not a fan of him.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_02: Not a fan of him either.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_00: I've got I've really gone off him, especially lately.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_00: I'm going more and more off him.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_02: I just he's awful.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_00: Um I like Jesse and Andrew in it.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_02: I just I just don't I don't think I've liked a movie that any of the like either of them are in.
- 1:02:56unknown: Right.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_02: Honestly.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_00: Do you think the writing's bad in it?
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's bad, but I don't think it's as great as everybody thinks it is.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I would agree with that.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: I think it's just overly hyped.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: And I am just like, mm-hmm, well I'm not a huge Sorkin fan, if I'm being honest.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_00: I I I find him kind of insufferable, his writing.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_00: And so like that's that's the one that I like the most.
- 1:03:23SPEAKER_02: It's pretentious.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_00: But yeah, it's pretentious.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_00: It's not it's not how people talk.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_00: And but if you're gonna do something based on reality, then I I don't think that's the the approach to go for.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_02: I think maybe if somebody else had been behind it, um, if somebody else had written it differently, maybe I would have liked it better.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: Um, but the writing is pretentious, I don't like most of the cast.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: Um I I really I just don't get the hype.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: I really don't.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_00: Someone else said to me, like the I can't remember who was who said it on the podcast as well, but like said it before, but like they said that it would have been better if it had been made now, because the story back then was so fresh at the time that the stuff the stuff that they focused on wasn't as interesting as if like what he's going through now and what's what's happened in the last 10 years or whatever since the movie was made.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_02: That's a really good point because it is a totally different story now.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_00: Um I think maybe it changes him as well as a person.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_02: That's really that's really interesting to think about if it was made now.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_02: Um I would actually probably enjoy hearing that story more.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_00: Because also like when it was made, we were like five years into Facebook.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_00: Which and we were five five basically five years into social media, take me.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_00: So now we have su now it's such a presence in our lives that it would have been it's it's a really different movie.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_02: And I think it would be um I think it would be much more interesting now, especially you know, given all the political and um more business aspect of it.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_02: Um it was such a like a baby network, yeah, and now it's now it's one of like one of like a multimillion dollar like conglomerate.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_00: Back then it was just a social, literally just a social network, and like now it's everything.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: It spawned Instagram, it spawned all these different things, and it would be a really much more interesting story today.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_00: Uh but yeah, like it it so you clearly you prefer repo the genetic opera then.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_02: I do, yeah.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, my taste is out there in general.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_02: Um, like my list of favorite movies is just a mess.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_00: Your letterbox is always quite interesting.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: Um I'm like, what wait, what is this movie?
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: I've never heard of this.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_02: Um, I can go from like a Barbara Stanwick marathon to like watching this.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_02: So it's always always always interesting.
- 1:06:19SPEAKER_02: But I credit a lot of my movie taste to my dad actually because we have the same sense of humor.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_02: Um, he's gotten me into a lot of really interesting movies like um The Lost Boys, um, Streets of Fire, um, like Warriors, all kinds of like the bad 80s.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_00: So a lot of the 80s ones, yeah.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_02: Um, but then he'll go from watching like The Patriot to watching Confessions of the Teenage Drama Queen.
- 1:06:46SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, okay, like I get this from my dad.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_02: Like my dad's taste is all over the place, and so is mine.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: Like if you ask my dad his favorite movies ever, it's always The Patriot, Sister Act, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, and then the 2007 version of Hairspray.
- 1:07:09SPEAKER_00: Okay, so I could put three of those together and then pay the Patriots the stat the Patriots the one where I'm like, wait, yep, that's my dad.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_02: That's my dad.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_00: So what are your favorites then?
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_02: So my favorites, if I had to name like my top four movies of all time, um Dodsworth, which is a William Wyler um picture from the 1930s.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_02: Um, The Wizard of Oz.
- 1:07:37SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_02: The Mummy, the 1999 version.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_02: And then Clue.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:07:45unknown: Yeah.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_00: So Clue fits in with this, I feel like.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_00: Clue is like that vibe.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_00: Um I was gonna say the mummy as well, but not really.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_00: Um, thinking about it, not really.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, that's that's interesting.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_00: That's a that's a wide range as well.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_02: Um, there are a couple others I couldn't invite.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_02: I really love Stepmom.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_02: Um and then my favorite Barbara Stanwick movie is one of her westerns, um, The Furies, um, which is very interesting.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure I've ever seen one of her movies.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_02: She's my favorite.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_02: Um she's I've I think I've been on a very big binge of hers lately.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_02: I'm trying to watch her entire filmography.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_00: Um Do you know how how many movies that is?
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_02: Uh I think um 104.
- 1:08:44unknown: Okay.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_02: She had a very long career.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_02: Um and I'm trying to finish Carol Kane's filmography also.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_02: She has bit parts in a lot of movies, so I love watching these movies just for like five minutes of the I love her though.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_02: Uh she's fantastic.
- 1:09:01SPEAKER_02: She's my other favorite.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:09:06SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_02: I I I watch some pretty out there movies.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_00: No, but that's good.
- 1:09:11SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_00: It's always nice to have like a different kind of like these different movies as well, because it kind of um it's more it makes it more interesting when you're kind of talking about something like this, because you've got that you come into it with that knowledge of like, well, it's a different style, and I can bring I can bring that knowledge to it.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_00: Explain what makes it interesting.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_02: Right, like this is definitely not a barber standard movie, let me tell you.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_00: I I gathered that given that you given when she was around.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_02: If she was around her, this is made today, she'd probably quit acting.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_00: Which of hers would you recommend most?
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_02: Ooh.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_02: Um my favorite is the Furies, which I already said, but I also love Babyface.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_02: I know Babyface.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_02: I have a poster of Babyface on my wall.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_00: Oh, cool.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_02: Um, and then her most well-known, I think, is Double Indemnity.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_02: I said that right, but um, I my pronunciation of things is awful, but um, that one, she's like the ultimate like femme fatale.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_02: Um, she you know, pays like she like manipulates an insurance salesman into murdering her husband, and it's a bull.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_02: Um that one, if you are interested in like Barbara Stanwood, I would watch that one and then work your way through everything else because that's like her career-defining performance.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_00: Got you.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, cool.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_00: I'll I'm definitely gonna check that out as well because I I've been meaning to watch that for a while.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts because everyone that I have told to watch it, they always have different opinions.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_02: Never anything bad, but just gonna say I've always heard good things about it.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, different things that they liked about it and like how they reacted in general and stuff.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_02: So I always love hearing what people think.
- 1:11:06SPEAKER_00: Great.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_00: I'm definitely gonna, yeah, I'll let you know once I've seen it.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_00: Yay! Um, okay, so how can we find you online?
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_00: And do you have anything you'd like to plug at the moment?
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't have anything I'd like to plug.
- 1:11:19SPEAKER_02: Um, I am not a comedian, contrary to what people on Twitter think.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_02: Um I am just a very funny.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_02: I am just a person on social media who does dumb shit.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, you can find me on Twitter.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_02: Um my ad is KateMarielle.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_02: Um I don't know if like you want to spell that out somewhere, but I'll tag you in it so like it'll tell me um and also on Instagram at the same handle.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_02: And um, I'm thinking now maybe I would love to start like a Barbara Stanwick podcast, but I wouldn't even know where to start with that.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_02: But if I do, then yeah, if I do, then you will be the first to know.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_00: So and I'll come on and talk about that at that level of dignity.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_02: Yes, if you'll have me on.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_00: Um cool.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you so much for coming on.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_00: It's really funny.
- 1:12:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, thank you for having me, and thank you for letting me talk about this horrifically awful but good somehow movie.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_00: Everyone check out Repo the Genetic Opera.
- 1:12:22SPEAKER_02: Yes, all right, thank you so much.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_02: It's been so fun.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_00: That's the end of the podcast.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_00: If you enjoyed it, please leave us a review and make us a legend so we can make any more episodes.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_00: And I'll see you next week for more movies that critics got the mode.
