- 0:03Speaker 1: Hike and everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth podcast. Listen to what the Man said. Addition,
- 0:13Speaker 1: as we review what Joe Burrow told reporters at the
- 0:16Speaker 1: NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday. For most people, it put
- 0:21Speaker 1: to rest the notion that Burrow does not want to
- 0:23Speaker 1: play for the Bengals if he selected number one overall
- 0:27Speaker 1: in the NFL Draft. But not everybody. You'll hear what
- 0:31Speaker 1: I mean. Plus, at least one NFL draft expert thinks
- 0:35Speaker 1: that Tuatungo Vloa is actually the best quarterback prospect in
- 0:40Speaker 1: this draft. You'll hear why all of that is straight ahead.
- 0:44Speaker 1: But first, here's a quick reminder that you can have
- 0:47Speaker 1: the latest edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 0:51Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify,
- 0:57Speaker 1: or pod Bean. It's the greatest thing since America's obsession
- 1:02Speaker 1: with the NFL. Perhaps the greatest proof ever of just
- 1:07Speaker 1: how much we love the NFL is the fact that
- 1:10Speaker 1: the on field drills at this year's scouting combine are
- 1:13Speaker 1: moving to prime time. Who needs to watch the new
- 1:17Speaker 1: season of Survivor or The Bachelor? When you can watch
- 1:21Speaker 1: the three cone drill or the broad jump. You can
- 1:24Speaker 1: watch the drills from four to eleven Thursday through Saturday,
- 1:29Speaker 1: then two to seven on Sunday on the NFL Network. Now,
- 1:35Speaker 1: let's get to Joe Burrow. A gigantic media throng gathered
- 1:39Speaker 1: around a podium at the Indiana Convention Center on Tuesday
- 1:43Speaker 1: to hear from the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback, and after
- 1:47Speaker 1: weeks of hearing speculation that he doesn't want to play
- 1:50Speaker 1: in Cincinnati, Bengals fans were eager to hear from Joe
- 1:54Speaker 1: Burrow himself after somebody asked a softball question about his
- 1:59Speaker 1: dramatic improved from his junior year at LSU to his
- 2:02Speaker 1: senior year. Beat reporter Paul Dayner Junior, who covers the
- 2:06Speaker 1: Bengals for The Athletic, got right to the topic on
- 2:09Speaker 1: everybody's mind when he asked, if the Bengals select you
- 2:13Speaker 1: at number one, will you happily report to go play
- 2:17Speaker 1: for them? Yeah? I'm not going to not play. I'm
- 2:22Speaker 1: a ball player. Whoever takes me, I'm gonna go show up. Okay.
- 2:25Speaker 1: That put to rest the notion that he'll pull an
- 2:27Speaker 1: Eli Manning and refuse to play for Cincinnati, but it
- 2:32Speaker 1: still wasn't all that enthusiastic. One question later, Joe was
- 2:37Speaker 1: asked if it would be exciting to play in his
- 2:40Speaker 1: home state. Yeah. Absolutely, two hours, fifteen minutes from my
- 2:44Speaker 1: house and I could go home for dinner if I
- 2:46Speaker 1: wanted to. Not a lot of pro athletes could get
- 2:49Speaker 1: to do that, all right. That was more encouraging for
- 2:52Speaker 1: Bengals fans. About a minute later, Joe was asked if
- 2:55Speaker 1: he wanted to be the number one overall pick. Yeah,
- 2:59Speaker 1: of course, I want to be the first pick. You know,
- 3:01Speaker 1: it's that's that's every kid's dream, you know. I'm I've
- 3:04Speaker 1: worked really, really hard for this opportunity, and I'm blessed
- 3:06Speaker 1: to be in this position and a lot of people
- 3:09Speaker 1: help me get here. Um, so I'm I'm just really
- 3:12Speaker 1: excited to be in this place. Burrow is scheduled to
- 3:14Speaker 1: meet with the Bengals on Wednesday. Does he have any
- 3:18Speaker 1: concerns about the organization that he hopes to discuss. You know,
- 3:22Speaker 1: what's gonna talk ball, just like every other team. I'm
- 3:24Speaker 1: I'm excited to, you know, get to know what what
- 3:27Speaker 1: their offense looks like. Um, what they see from me,
- 3:30Speaker 1: what they see that I can get better at something
- 3:32Speaker 1: I'm I'm asking all these teams when when I'm interviewing
- 3:35Speaker 1: with him, when you think I could get better at
- 3:37Speaker 1: because I'm always trying to learn, always trying to improve.
- 3:39Speaker 1: So let's review Joe Burrow's comments. He will report to
- 3:43Speaker 1: the Bengals if drafted number one overall, it would be
- 3:47Speaker 1: exciting to play in his home state of Ohio. Being
- 3:51Speaker 1: the number one overall pick is every kid's dream, and
- 3:56Speaker 1: he's excited to meet with the Bengals and talk to
- 3:58Speaker 1: them about the raw fense. So what about all these
- 4:03Speaker 1: stories suggesting that if you read between the lines and
- 4:06Speaker 1: some of his previous interviews, Joe's been hinting that he
- 4:10Speaker 1: doesn't want to play in Cincinnati. You know, the only
- 4:13Speaker 1: thing that I've said is I just didn't want to
- 4:15Speaker 1: read presumptuous about the pick, and so that's why I've
- 4:18Speaker 1: been noncommittal, because I don't know what's going to happen.
- 4:20Speaker 1: You know, they might not take me, they might fall
- 4:21Speaker 1: in love with someone else, so that, you know, you
- 4:24Speaker 1: guys kind of took that narrative and ran with it.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But there's never been anything like that from my ends.
- 4:30Speaker 1: You guys took that narrative and ran with it. There's
- 4:34Speaker 1: never been anything like that. From my end, case closed, right, well,
- 4:41Speaker 1: not exactly. I watched that news conference on Pro Football
- 4:45Speaker 1: Talk Live on NBC Sports Network before arriving in Indianapolis
- 4:50Speaker 1: later in the day, and after watching Burrow Talk, I
- 4:53Speaker 1: continued to watch as Mike Florio and Chris Simms analyzed
- 4:58Speaker 1: his comments. For Joe Burrow to come out at his
- 5:00Speaker 1: press conference and say, I'm going to submit to the process.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I'm going to play for wherever picks me. That doesn't
- 5:05Speaker 1: mean he wants to play for a given team. Sure,
- 5:08Speaker 1: he's just accepted the fact that he has to go
- 5:11Speaker 1: wherever he's picked, because what's the alternative. You know, if
- 5:14Speaker 1: you're the first overall pick, you're not going to say
- 5:16Speaker 1: no to thirty six million dollars over four years, fully
- 5:18Speaker 1: guaranteed you're gonna go there. That doesn't mean in his heart,
- 5:22Speaker 1: but he's hoping that it works out a different way, right,
- 5:25Speaker 1: That's two different things altogether. I'm glad he answered that
- 5:27Speaker 1: the way he did. You know, you know, he even
- 5:30Speaker 1: tried to say, you know, the one reason I didn't
- 5:32Speaker 1: just come out definitively and say, oh, yeah, I want
- 5:34Speaker 1: to play for them. He goes out, I didn't want
- 5:35Speaker 1: to sound presumptuous like I definitely was going to be
- 5:37Speaker 1: the number one pick. So I think at least he
- 5:40Speaker 1: silenced some of the murmurs. Now we're going to get
- 5:43Speaker 1: more of a feel for this as we continue to
- 5:45Speaker 1: go on, too, because we'll hear, you know, after he
- 5:47Speaker 1: meets after the combine and his representatives get to meet
- 5:50Speaker 1: with the Bengals and there starts to get conversations, We'll
- 5:53Speaker 1: start to hear some of the rumors about how comfortable
- 5:56Speaker 1: maybe he is with the Bengals and so on, and
- 5:58Speaker 1: we'll see where it goes from there. What he said
- 6:00Speaker 1: today doesn't matter. It does not end this question. Whether
- 6:04Speaker 1: he hopes deep down they don't take him, that is
- 6:07Speaker 1: not resolved, And anybody who says it is relved. I
- 6:09Speaker 1: can understand Bengals fans saying it. People in the media,
- 6:11Speaker 1: who I would like to think are smart enough to
- 6:13Speaker 1: understand the distinction. Some of them aren't. Aren't seeing it.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Whether they're doing that on purpose to pander to Bengals
- 6:18Speaker 1: fans or not. As a different issue, but there are
- 6:20Speaker 1: two different questions here. So there you have it. Joe
- 6:23Speaker 1: Burrow apparently did not reveal his innermost thoughts well enough
- 6:29Speaker 1: for the guys at Pro Football Talk, but the Bengals
- 6:32Speaker 1: Director of Player Personel Duke Tobin was satisfied when he
- 6:36Speaker 1: was informed about what Joe Burrow did say. You know
- 6:40Speaker 1: what our research tells us about Joe Burrow as he's
- 6:42Speaker 1: his own man, He's not going to be talked into
- 6:45Speaker 1: saying things for other people's benefit. So if that's what
- 6:48Speaker 1: he said, that's fantastic. I'm looking forward to getting to
- 6:52Speaker 1: know him, getting to meet him through the process. Haven't
- 6:55Speaker 1: been able to sit down with him yet, but we've
- 6:57Speaker 1: got that on the horizon. So just looking forward to seeing, um,
- 7:02Speaker 1: you know, the fit for for he and us and
- 7:04Speaker 1: uh and uh, he's certainly exciting guy to watch on tape. Uh.
- 7:09Speaker 1: You know, I can talk on and on about the
- 7:11Speaker 1: things that he's done. You know, transferring in is not easy.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I'm a transfer quarterback. I know, Uh, I know the
- 7:19Speaker 1: the the pitfalls of that, and I know how hard
- 7:22Speaker 1: it is to to have a team buy into you
- 7:24Speaker 1: once you get there, and so I know that firsthand.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And in you know, his story is such a great
- 7:29Speaker 1: story of perseverance, and dedication, hard work, believing in yourself
- 7:34Speaker 1: and then uh and then yeah, ultimately winning at the
- 7:38Speaker 1: highest level. So it's a great story for everybody. Duke
- 7:41Speaker 1: transferred from Illinois to Colorado before playing pro football in
- 7:45Speaker 1: the Arena League. By the way, Bengals dot Com editor
- 7:49Speaker 1: Jeff Hobson reports did Burrow is scheduled to meet with
- 7:52Speaker 1: the Bengals coaching staff and front office on Wednesday afternoon.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Of course, it's still possible that the Banks won't select
- 8:01Speaker 1: Burrow number one overall. NFL dot Com draft analyst Bucky
- 8:05Speaker 1: Brooks has Burrow going number one to Cincinnati in his
- 8:09Speaker 1: latest mock draft, but also recently said that he considers
- 8:14Speaker 1: Ta Tungo Vloa to be the most talented quarterback in
- 8:18Speaker 1: this year's draft. I talked to Bucky about that at
- 8:22Speaker 1: the combine. Naturally, Bengals fans are interested in your opinion
- 8:26Speaker 1: of the top quarterbacks in this draft. I saw recently
- 8:29Speaker 1: the Tuah is your guy. But that's nothing negative against
- 8:32Speaker 1: Joe Burrow either. No, there's nothing negative at all. I
- 8:35Speaker 1: think if we're stacking, and I think the difference between
- 8:38Speaker 1: a mock draft and rankings, you're trying to look at
- 8:40Speaker 1: the talent and the upside. I think Tuah has more
- 8:43Speaker 1: talent and upside if he plays to his potential International
- 8:47Speaker 1: football league. Now that doesn't mean that Joe Burrow won't
- 8:49Speaker 1: be an our standing player. I think it's a rare
- 8:51Speaker 1: instance where you could have two QB one's two guys
- 8:54Speaker 1: that come out and play really, really well. I think
- 8:57Speaker 1: the difference between the two is also like this, Like
- 9:01Speaker 1: TWA talking about Lower reminds me of Drew Brees. He's
- 9:04Speaker 1: a quick, decisive thrower. He's deadly accurate. He consistently puts
- 9:08Speaker 1: the ball in the strike zone. So he's the left
- 9:11Speaker 1: handed version of Breeze. Whereas I see Joe Burrow as
- 9:14Speaker 1: a guy who is I think he's an RPO master.
- 9:17Speaker 1: His ball handling, his ability to get the ball out
- 9:19Speaker 1: of his hands, his basketball background allows him to be
- 9:24Speaker 1: the perfect distributor. And so I would say it's Drew
- 9:27Speaker 1: Brees versus Tony Romo. Both guys are successful, both guys
- 9:30Speaker 1: can win, Both guys can do it in their own style.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
- 9:35Speaker 1: It's just a matter of here's how I want to
- 9:37Speaker 1: play on offense. This guy best fits what I want
- 9:39Speaker 1: to do with two as injury and his past where
- 9:42Speaker 1: that is concerned. Would that be enough of a deal
- 9:45Speaker 1: breaker if you have the number one overall pick Oh,
- 9:47Speaker 1: I could be. I mean you have to take all
- 9:49Speaker 1: those things in consideration. Based on his past history, Yeah,
- 9:52Speaker 1: it would be a bit of a risk because he
- 9:54Speaker 1: has to hip, he has some lower by the injuries,
- 9:56Speaker 1: he has had some durability concerns, and so that has
- 9:59Speaker 1: to fact into the equation. Whereas when you look at
- 10:02Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, he has a pretty clean evaluation from what
- 10:05Speaker 1: we know on the medical side, and so if that
- 10:08Speaker 1: is kind of the deciding factor, Yeah, you can see
- 10:10Speaker 1: where people will opt for the health consideration over the
- 10:14Speaker 1: guy who may have a bit of a checkered history
- 10:16Speaker 1: when it comes to the injury situation. Does Joe's improvement
- 10:19Speaker 1: from junior year to senior year raise any red flags
- 10:23Speaker 1: in your opinion? It would worry me a little bit,
- 10:25Speaker 1: And that's something that maybe he can kind of answer
- 10:29Speaker 1: in the interview process, because you do want to want
- 10:32Speaker 1: Hey man, your production went up three and a half
- 10:35Speaker 1: times touchdowns and yards and all that, then you're junior year.
- 10:41Speaker 1: What was that? Is that? A scheme? Thing? Can that
- 10:44Speaker 1: be sustainable. Do you have to play in the scheme
- 10:47Speaker 1: that Joe Brady set up or is he a guy
- 10:50Speaker 1: that can be dropped into any offense and have that
- 10:53Speaker 1: kind of success. More importantly, when you're Zach Taylor and
- 10:56Speaker 1: you're looking and considering him as the number one Okay,
- 10:59Speaker 1: how much of this stuff that they're doing at LSU
- 11:01Speaker 1: can we put in our playbook? How can we get
- 11:04Speaker 1: him up and going and ready to play right away?
- 11:06Speaker 1: Because that's the way of the world and the way
- 11:08Speaker 1: the world is. Hey, we draft a young quarterback, we
- 11:10Speaker 1: put him on the field, we put him in an
- 11:11Speaker 1: offense that he's very comfortable in, and away we go
- 11:14Speaker 1: because we got a five year window to win the
- 11:16Speaker 1: Super Bowl while he's on that rookie deal, How can
- 11:19Speaker 1: we get him as many bikes at the Apple? So
- 11:22Speaker 1: it's part of that looking at Joe Burrow, seeing where
- 11:24Speaker 1: he is, what do we need to do to get
- 11:25Speaker 1: him going? But yeah, you have to ask that question,
- 11:27Speaker 1: what was the difference? What did you learn from your
- 11:29Speaker 1: junior to senior year to allow you to pop like
- 11:31Speaker 1: you did on a big stage. A couple more questions
- 11:33Speaker 1: for Bucky Brooks. The strength of this draft is it's
- 11:37Speaker 1: tough man. There are a ton of wide receivers that
- 11:40Speaker 1: are available that can make plays. But I also think
- 11:42Speaker 1: there are plenty of offensive tackles at the top of
- 11:44Speaker 1: the board that can come in and start right away.
- 11:47Speaker 1: On the defense of the ball, you have a number
- 11:50Speaker 1: of cornerbacks that I would say are B to B
- 11:53Speaker 1: plus level, and that's good enough to be starters. I
- 11:56Speaker 1: don't know how many All Pro candidates you have, but
- 11:58Speaker 1: you got a lot of corner is that man middle
- 12:02Speaker 1: to the top of the third round that will be
- 12:05Speaker 1: drafted and they will make a ton of plays in
- 12:06Speaker 1: this league. If you're the Bengals after the first overall pick,
- 12:10Speaker 1: what kind of positions are you targeting? I think it
- 12:13Speaker 1: has to be about the offensive line. I think if
- 12:15Speaker 1: you're gonna make the quarterback to priority, you want to
- 12:17Speaker 1: make sure that you put a fortress in front of him.
- 12:19Speaker 1: You have good skill players are ready. You got Joe Mixing,
- 12:21Speaker 1: there's a Pro Bowl caliber back. You got Tyler Boyd,
- 12:24Speaker 1: you Green back aj Green, you got a nice one
- 12:26Speaker 1: two points on the outside. Yeah, you can get a
- 12:28Speaker 1: tight end, but if you can fix the offensive line,
- 12:31Speaker 1: you get Jonah Williams back. But if you can fix
- 12:33Speaker 1: that offensive line, but that offensive line can all people,
- 12:35Speaker 1: then I think you have an opportunity to really see
- 12:37Speaker 1: them really kind of make a quick turnaround and get
- 12:40Speaker 1: back to being a competitive end the division. Appreciate your time,
- 12:42Speaker 1: thanks for having me. That's going to do it for
- 12:45Speaker 1: this episode of the podcast. I'll be talking to more
- 12:48Speaker 1: experts at the Combine for the next episode. Don't forget
- 12:52Speaker 1: to subscribe, and if you have a minute, please give
- 12:54Speaker 1: it a rating or share a comment. Those five star
- 12:57Speaker 1: ratings help more Bengals fans find our podcast. I'm Dan
- 13:01Speaker 1: Horde and thanks for listening to the Bengals Booth podcast.
