- 0:59Speaker 4: brought us a guest. Yeah, she's going to introduce and
- 1:02Speaker 4: we will go from there.
- 1:03Speaker 5: Absolutely. I'm so excited to have this guest on the
- 1:06Speaker 5: podcast tonight.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Guys.
- 1:08Speaker 5: He is a son of West Virginia and also a
- 1:11Speaker 5: son of Marshall, so we've got a double thing going there.
- 1:15Speaker 5: Just wanted to give a little background to this guest.
- 1:18Speaker 5: He is currently the offensive line coach at the University
- 1:23Speaker 5: of South Carolina. He has twenty nine years of experience
- 1:26Speaker 5: coaching both at the collegiate and pro levels. He served
- 1:30Speaker 5: as the assistant coach for the Thundering Herd in nineteen
- 1:33Speaker 5: ninety two when they won the one Double A national
- 1:35Speaker 5: championship Bad and not bad at all, and he also
- 1:38Speaker 5: played on Marshall's football team through the year's nineteen eighty
- 1:42Speaker 5: six and nineteen eighty nine and so, without further ado,
- 1:46Speaker 5: from Charleston, West Virginia, mister Greg Atkins, welcome, Greg.
- 1:51Speaker 6: Hey, how you guys doing it well?
- 1:54Speaker 3: How you going?
- 1:55Speaker 5: How did you like that introduction? Greg?
- 1:58Speaker 6: It was really good. As soon as you came online.
- 2:03Speaker 6: There's uh, there's a fire truck driving by me. I
- 2:08Speaker 6: probably you put it on fire on fire introduction.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I appreciate it.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Hey, Greg, just just real quick, you probably have to
- 2:19Speaker 4: know Sterling Sharp. I'd have to think if you're if
- 2:21Speaker 4: you're down in South Carolina, have you met.
- 2:25Speaker 6: Well, I don't really, I don't.
- 2:27Speaker 2: I don't.
- 2:27Speaker 6: I wouldn't say I know him, But what I do
- 2:30Speaker 6: know is uh him as a golf course and he's uh.
- 2:39Speaker 6: I think he's a guy that absolutely loves to win
- 2:43Speaker 6: at golf.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Well, if by some chance you see him and you
- 2:48Speaker 4: walk up to him and say, hey, Carl Lee has
- 2:51Speaker 4: told you that I'm the reason he's playing golf as
- 2:54Speaker 4: good as he's playing it.
- 2:56Speaker 3: I introduced him to golf here in West Virginia.
- 2:59Speaker 5: I believe. Don't believe that, Greg, It is not a
- 3:02Speaker 5: minute of it.
- 3:03Speaker 4: He learned, played golf here and then went back to
- 3:06Speaker 4: South Carolina, took lessons and got better than all of us.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Well, just one thing. The one thing I know about
- 3:14Speaker 6: Sirlin Sharp is he likes to win. And I don't
- 3:18Speaker 6: know how good his golf game actually is really good.
- 3:22Speaker 6: He usually wins.
- 3:23Speaker 3: He's really good. But as a side note, well go.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Ahead, oh no, no, so, Greg, we were going to
- 3:31Speaker 5: have you just talk a little bit about some of
- 3:32Speaker 5: the successes you've experienced with the game Cocks so far
- 3:36Speaker 5: with your career.
- 3:38Speaker 6: Well, I mean, certainly, I had an opportunity. I was
- 3:42Speaker 6: coaching at Marshall when Coach Bamer got this job at
- 3:46Speaker 6: South Carolina, and that was the transition between Doc and
- 3:50Speaker 6: Coach Hull, and I got the opportunity to come to
- 3:53Speaker 6: South Carolina with Coach Baemer and Coach Baemer was actually
- 3:59Speaker 6: a graduate assistant at South Carolina UH at Tennessee when
- 4:03Speaker 6: I was coaching at Tennessee. Uh So, so there was
- 4:06Speaker 6: a connection. And uh and of course I've known his
- 4:09Speaker 6: father for a number of years. His father actually recruited
- 4:12Speaker 6: me out of high school a little bit at Virginia Tech.
- 4:15Speaker 6: It was his first year at Virginia Tech. So so
- 4:18Speaker 6: there's a lot of connections and and ultimately we we
- 4:23Speaker 6: we've done a good job here at South Carolina.
- 4:25Speaker 3: UH.
- 4:26Speaker 6: Coach Beemer obviously learned from his father, but he also
- 4:29Speaker 6: learned from another a number of other people that he's
- 4:33Speaker 6: worked for, Philip Falmer, Sylvester Chrome, she Spur. Uh So,
- 4:41Speaker 6: I mean, the guy's been around a lot of legendary,
- 4:44Speaker 6: legendary coaches, and he's well ahead of his time. I mean,
- 4:48Speaker 6: his birthday was yesterday. I won't say hell who he is,
- 4:52Speaker 6: but his birthday was yesterday, and I told him all
- 4:55Speaker 6: good people are born in March. And uh uh or
- 4:59Speaker 6: I guess today go now, I'm sorry, I forget it's
- 5:02Speaker 6: spring practice. There's a lot of a lot of stuff
- 5:05Speaker 6: going on, but uh, you know, we we've done a
- 5:07Speaker 6: good job. I mean, you know, it's all about a quarterback,
- 5:11Speaker 6: you know, and uh, it's all about the offensive defensive
- 5:14Speaker 6: line in this league and the Southeastern conferences. Uh is
- 5:19Speaker 6: a lot of scrimmage league, like a lot of places.
- 5:22Speaker 6: But if you don't have those kind of people on
- 5:26Speaker 6: the O lines and D lines, you you have no
- 5:28Speaker 6: chance in this league at all. And and we've done
- 5:32Speaker 6: a good job of of uh recruiting the line of scrimmage. Uh,
- 5:38Speaker 6: we actually have a quarterback that is phenomenal who is
- 5:42Speaker 6: just just any second year here and he played phenomenally
- 5:46Speaker 6: well for us last year. And uh, we're excited about
- 5:50Speaker 6: the future. Uh. We have done a great job. And
- 5:54Speaker 6: I'm sure we'll get into it. But the whole portal
- 5:57Speaker 6: situation is I'm going to.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Catch you off. That's what I wanted to ask you about.
- 6:01Speaker 4: You've been in the game for a long time, You've
- 6:04Speaker 4: been coaching for a while now, so and I know
- 6:07Speaker 4: generally assistant coaches they they are tasked with recruiting not
- 6:11Speaker 4: only their their specific position, but also a region. So
- 6:16Speaker 4: how has recruiting changed for you given the transfer portal
- 6:20Speaker 4: in what it is today.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Well, I mean, we all still have an area that
- 6:25Speaker 6: we're responsible for, but at the end of the day,
- 6:28Speaker 6: there's a lot of position recruiting going on now. So
- 6:31Speaker 6: you have to be you know, you have to be
- 6:34Speaker 6: you know, you have to be good to recruit, you know,
- 6:40Speaker 6: not only high school players because listen, we'll talk about
- 6:44Speaker 6: the facts. I mean, at the end of the day,
- 6:46Speaker 6: this is a still a developmental SEC program.
- 6:49Speaker 3: We're not gonna be.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Able to get the elite of elites all the time.
- 6:53Speaker 6: But we've been able to attract several five star players
- 6:57Speaker 6: UH to come here, and a couple offense linemen, and
- 7:00Speaker 6: and a receiver and a defensive end that everybody's going
- 7:05Speaker 6: to know about which they most Dylan Stewart, who will be,
- 7:09Speaker 6: you know, whatever he wants to be, you know. And
- 7:13Speaker 6: so at the end of the day, we have a
- 7:15Speaker 6: great product to sell here. But we've done a really
- 7:18Speaker 6: good job of the developmental stage of players. We have
- 7:24Speaker 6: an outstanding weight room, we have an outstanding culture here,
- 7:28Speaker 6: and you know, we have been we have developed players
- 7:33Speaker 6: and we've supplemented it with the portal. We're still going
- 7:37Speaker 6: to recruit high school players. We signed we signed one
- 7:40Speaker 6: of the most high school players of anybody UH in
- 7:44Speaker 6: the SEC. Last year. We signed twenty four high school players.
- 7:46Speaker 4: Well, because that was one of that was one of
- 7:49Speaker 4: the questions that I was going to ask you was
- 7:52Speaker 4: because we've talked about high school kids are all of
- 7:55Speaker 4: a sudden sudden getting left out because of transfers and
- 7:59Speaker 4: things like that. But you guys are saying you're pretty
- 8:02Speaker 4: much focusing on the top high school players.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Am I hearing that? Is that what I'm here?
- 8:08Speaker 4: You know?
- 8:09Speaker 6: We we we are. I mean, it's all gonna start.
- 8:11Speaker 6: I mean, it's all starts at South Carolina with high
- 8:13Speaker 6: school recruiting, and there's a you know, obviously in the
- 8:16Speaker 6: state of South Carolina has produced a lot of number
- 8:18Speaker 6: of great players. And then our footprint with you know,
- 8:22Speaker 6: being a tasted to North Carolina really at tasted to Tennessee,
- 8:27Speaker 6: attached to Georgia and Florida, UH and Alabama to to
- 8:32Speaker 6: some extent, we're gonna we're gonna live in those states
- 8:36Speaker 6: and we're still going to try to get the best
- 8:39Speaker 6: players out of that state. And the other thing that
- 8:41Speaker 6: we have is we have this little influx of d
- 8:44Speaker 6: m V players because of coach Beemer's connections, our our
- 8:51Speaker 6: dB coach Tory and Gray, who played at Virginia Tech
- 8:54Speaker 6: who's who played in NFL for a number of years,
- 8:58Speaker 6: and then starting uh Serling Lucas our d n coach,
- 9:02Speaker 6: and then Lennie Teasley, who who's from Jersey and uh
- 9:07Speaker 6: So we have this influx of d m V kids
- 9:11Speaker 6: that have done a great job for us over you know,
- 9:15Speaker 6: in our first four or five years here.
- 9:16Speaker 5: That's amazing. Hey, Greg, So you've talked a little bit
- 9:19Speaker 5: about some of the influences and the different teams are
- 9:22Speaker 5: actually coaches and teams that you've worked with. Can you
- 9:24Speaker 5: tell us a little bit about your history with football,
- 9:27Speaker 5: how you got started in coaching, you know, what kind
- 9:30Speaker 5: of things motivated you to this sport and actually to
- 9:33Speaker 5: this position in general.
- 9:36Speaker 6: Well, that's a great question. A lot of people asked
- 9:39Speaker 6: that question, you know, like how did you get started
- 9:42Speaker 6: in coaching? And you know, I was a player at
- 9:45Speaker 6: Marshall from eighty six to eighty nine, and I was
- 9:48Speaker 6: a UH. I played, I played under George Shomp and
- 9:52Speaker 6: uh and then coach Chump left to become the head
- 9:56Speaker 6: coach at Navy, and I was kind of a part
- 9:59Speaker 6: of the I won't say the search committee, but I
- 10:02Speaker 6: was a part of the informal interviews with potential candidates
- 10:06Speaker 6: to replace George Trump. And there were two guys that
- 10:10Speaker 6: I got a chance to meet with, and that was
- 10:13Speaker 6: Jim donnon and that was a guy named Larry Blakeney.
- 10:17Speaker 6: And uh, and so I'm I'm just hanging out in
- 10:22Speaker 6: grad school after I finished playing and and and like
- 10:26Speaker 6: four or five days after Jim Donnay got the job,
- 10:31Speaker 6: he said, what are you doing? And you know, and
- 10:34Speaker 6: I was like, well, I don't know. I'm just I'm
- 10:37Speaker 6: in grad school. Uh, you know, I'm trying to I'm
- 10:40Speaker 6: going to do it in my life, you know. And
- 10:41Speaker 6: he said, why don't you come out and help us
- 10:43Speaker 6: out in spring practice and say if you want to
- 10:45Speaker 6: do this coaching thing. And I did and and so
- 10:51Speaker 6: so I did and and uh, you know, I won't
- 10:54Speaker 6: get into the details of how I ultimately, you know,
- 10:58Speaker 6: kept going because it was an unforeseen situation that happened
- 11:03Speaker 6: to somebody on defense that I actually my first year
- 11:07Speaker 6: in coaching, I coached the defensive line and me and
- 11:11Speaker 6: Brad Lambert actually coached the defensive line at Marshall in
- 11:16Speaker 6: nineteen ninety one. And then I moved back to offense
- 11:19Speaker 6: and then you know, coach coach down got the job
- 11:23Speaker 6: at Georgia. I was twenty five years old, and I
- 11:26Speaker 6: had no I had I had no idea what was
- 11:28Speaker 6: going on.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I mean.
- 11:35Speaker 6: Like I was twenty five and I like, you know,
- 11:37Speaker 6: you had no idea what was happening in the world.
- 11:40Speaker 6: You know, you just like you have no idea at
- 11:43Speaker 6: twenty five years old, what like what's going on? And
- 11:48Speaker 6: and I'll never forget it. I was, I was at
- 11:51Speaker 6: my I'm sorry, my late wife grandmother's house and uh
- 11:59Speaker 6: and this is like, this is like the evolution of
- 12:02Speaker 6: cell phones, right, yeah, there's no there's no cell phones
- 12:05Speaker 6: in ninety four. You got a backbone maybe if you're lying.
- 12:09Speaker 6: And one of the things I always remember Jim donnad
- 12:12Speaker 6: I always said, was like like, hey, we're going to
- 12:14Speaker 6: have two weeks off. We lost in the National Championship game,
- 12:18Speaker 6: and he said, hey, everybody, uh, make sure you leave
- 12:21Speaker 6: a number, a couple of numbers where you might be
- 12:24Speaker 6: over the Christmas holidays and no, behold, on Christmas Day,
- 12:30Speaker 6: I get a call from Jim donnah and uh and
- 12:34Speaker 6: he said, hey, uh, where are you at? And I
- 12:36Speaker 6: was like, uh, well, I'm in Bell West, Virginia. Nice,
- 12:42Speaker 6: that's where that's where her grandmother lived. And uh. Between
- 12:46Speaker 6: Bell and I was just like all right, and he says,
- 12:49Speaker 6: how long before you get to Huntington And I was like, well,
- 12:52Speaker 6: I can be there whenever you need. This is Christmas
- 12:54Speaker 6: Day now and uh and uh. So I drove the
- 12:59Speaker 6: Huntings in West Virginia and I got a job at
- 13:02Speaker 6: the University of Georgia at twenty five years old.
- 13:04Speaker 4: And so let me let me ask you this coach,
- 13:06Speaker 4: just as like I said, you, you coached a lot
- 13:09Speaker 4: of particularly with that Marshall team. I believe William King
- 13:12Speaker 4: and Mark Mason and a couple of local guys were there.
- 13:15Speaker 4: So let me ask you, like, with all your experience
- 13:18Speaker 4: and where you're at, now, what are you looking for?
- 13:21Speaker 4: Because you know, and I'm asking this question because I'm
- 13:23Speaker 4: a I'm a I'm a old quarterback and I love
- 13:25Speaker 4: nothing more than a good offensive line. So so what
- 13:28Speaker 4: what are we looking for in in a in a
- 13:31Speaker 4: an elite division one offensive lineman?
- 13:33Speaker 6: Now, well, I mean, I think I think it goes
- 13:37Speaker 6: for every position. Truthfully, I think the world we live
- 13:40Speaker 6: in today in college football is a different world than
- 13:44Speaker 6: it was three years ago, and it'll be different two
- 13:47Speaker 6: years from now. I think you have to change with times.
- 13:51Speaker 6: I think you can't. You can't be so old school
- 13:54Speaker 6: like I like, I'm an old school guy. I'm gonna
- 13:57Speaker 6: coach your I'm gonna cut your yard. I promise you that.
- 14:00Speaker 6: But you also got to figure like, at the end
- 14:03Speaker 6: of the day, you really have to get to know
- 14:05Speaker 6: the player, and this player has to want to be coached,
- 14:11Speaker 6: because today the world is about nli and it's about
- 14:16Speaker 6: like what's cool and what shoes am I gonna wear?
- 14:19Speaker 6: And what uniform am I gonna wear? And all this
- 14:22Speaker 6: kind of stuff, and I could care less about all that. Truthfully,
- 14:28Speaker 6: all I want is guys who want to play football
- 14:32Speaker 6: and be tough, smart and dependable. And if they're tough,
- 14:36Speaker 6: smart and dependable, if their high school coach, and through
- 14:40Speaker 6: my investigation, if they can do all those kind of things,
- 14:45Speaker 6: then obviously they got to be able to play the game.
- 14:47Speaker 6: And if they can do that, then I'm really interested,
- 14:51Speaker 6: you know, And it's just a matter of how they're
- 14:53Speaker 6: gonna fit to our program here at South Carolina or
- 14:57Speaker 6: any other place I've really been. But the world today
- 15:01Speaker 6: is just like crazy, you know, in a number of
- 15:04Speaker 6: different ways. As we all know, but this whole thing's
- 15:07Speaker 6: hopefully gonna settle down here in the very in near future.
- 15:11Speaker 4: Do you think, coach and I'm gonna, we're gonna, We're
- 15:13Speaker 4: gonna let you go here. One one of my concerns,
- 15:18Speaker 4: you know, is when you start looking at players and
- 15:21Speaker 4: you're like, oh, man, I really like this player.
- 15:24Speaker 3: But next thing, you know, you know, everybody's looking for
- 15:27Speaker 3: that in nil.
- 15:30Speaker 4: How do you all approach the kid you know that
- 15:34Speaker 4: that you can't reach like that he's just putting a
- 15:37Speaker 4: number out there. And do people do parents understand and
- 15:40Speaker 4: do kids recruits understand that there could be actually a
- 15:45Speaker 4: limit that the school has, but everything.
- 15:48Speaker 3: At the school might be perfect for you.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Well, I think it's everybody's learning. I bet I learn
- 15:54Speaker 6: every day. I'm fifty, I'm fifty seven years old, and
- 15:58Speaker 6: I bet this is my thirty six years coaching, and
- 16:01Speaker 6: I learn every day about what's next, right, And I
- 16:08Speaker 6: think the people that are not learning about what's next
- 16:11Speaker 6: are the people that got to be in trouble. And
- 16:15Speaker 6: I think the people that are looking to the future
- 16:18Speaker 6: needs to also say, Okay, where are these gudrails? Where
- 16:22Speaker 6: are we going? Where is the revenue sharing where's the
- 16:26Speaker 6: NLI and all that. Listen. I'm all for players getting
- 16:29Speaker 6: paid like I love it. I wish I had it
- 16:32Speaker 6: when I was playing. I mean, I wish I'd got
- 16:37Speaker 6: my dad. When my dad gave me twenty dollars after
- 16:40Speaker 6: a game on Saturday, I was jacked up. What I'm saying,
- 16:46Speaker 6: I was jacked up, and my daddy gave me that
- 16:48Speaker 6: twenty dollars because I thought I made him proud, right,
- 16:52Speaker 6: you know. And at the end of the day, you know,
- 16:55Speaker 6: I think you've got to manage all that stuff. And
- 16:58Speaker 6: I'm not really involved than too much of that stuff.
- 17:02Speaker 6: What I am involved is is is just trying to
- 17:06Speaker 6: find the best players available and then and then and
- 17:09Speaker 6: and find and make sure they have the right characteristics
- 17:12Speaker 6: that we want, and then we go from there and
- 17:16Speaker 6: now they they you know, we have this whole other
- 17:20Speaker 6: entourage that can figure out all that other stuff.
- 17:24Speaker 3: I don't.
- 17:24Speaker 6: I don't.
- 17:25Speaker 3: I don't.
- 17:25Speaker 6: I really don't have to figure that out, even though
- 17:28Speaker 6: there's you know, I'll be honest, if a player brings
- 17:31Speaker 6: that up very early when I'm getting to know a player,
- 17:35Speaker 6: then that that's kind of a turn off for me,
- 17:37Speaker 6: to be honest with you. But if if a player
- 17:40Speaker 6: is trying to figure out, how are you going to
- 17:43Speaker 6: get me better? What are you going to do for me?
- 17:45Speaker 6: How do you see me fitting in and and asking
- 17:49Speaker 6: from an academic standpoint, and all the things that we
- 17:53Speaker 6: used to talk about. If they're asking those types of
- 17:57Speaker 6: questions and the parents are, then I'm gonna be more
- 18:00Speaker 6: intrigued by that human. Now with that being said, it's
- 18:04Speaker 6: not like there's not money available for certain caliber type player,
- 18:12Speaker 6: you know. But luckily I don't have to deal with that.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Like my my job is not to deal with that.
- 18:19Speaker 6: My job is to coach and uh and recruit the
- 18:24Speaker 6: best players we can get at South Carolina. And you know,
- 18:29Speaker 6: it's it's it's a beautiful thing. It's a beautiful thing,
- 18:33Speaker 6: but it's but it's I think the people that can change,
- 18:37Speaker 6: and I think like the old school guys, to be
- 18:40Speaker 6: honest with you, like myself, like us, well we're all right,
- 18:45Speaker 6: like us, all of us that can change are the
- 18:50Speaker 6: people that are going to be really good because we
- 18:53Speaker 6: were good when this wasn't wasn't an issue and uh,
- 18:57Speaker 6: and now when we're good in the past and we
- 19:01Speaker 6: don't really deal with that part of it we're still
- 19:03Speaker 6: gonna be good and we're gonna be great.
- 19:05Speaker 4: Actually, all right, well coach, we we're gonna have to
- 19:09Speaker 4: take a quick break here.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Man. We appreciate that information.
- 19:12Speaker 4: And actually when when we when we come out of
- 19:14Speaker 4: this commercial, then I'm gonna also kind of touch back
- 19:18Speaker 4: a couple of things that you said I gotta throw
- 19:19Speaker 4: at these times.
- 19:20Speaker 3: So we appreciate your time being here today. We really do.
- 19:24Speaker 5: Good luck with spring practice. Greg.
- 19:26Speaker 6: Thanks coach, all right, thank you. We're about a halfway through.
- 19:30Speaker 5: All right, talk to you seeing. Thanks.
- 19:32Speaker 4: All right, let me be before we before we run
- 19:34Speaker 4: off to a quick break. Hollis Lewis is gonna have
- 19:37Speaker 4: to leave us early, and so we're gonna we're gonna
- 19:39Speaker 4: give him a little bit of mic time.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:41Speaker 4: So again when we talk what I love about doing
- 19:45Speaker 4: this show is that we not only talk about current events,
- 19:48Speaker 4: we talk about the future of sports, we talk about
- 19:51Speaker 4: the past sports, and we also talk about all levels
- 19:54Speaker 4: and anything social issues concerning sports. So, you know, we
- 19:57Speaker 4: have a couple of bills in the West Virginia Legislator
- 20:00Speaker 4: that would be affecting sports here in West Virginia. So
- 20:04Speaker 4: the first one is a house built twenty five to
- 20:06Speaker 4: seventy six. And what that does is that codifies nil
- 20:11Speaker 4: you know, into West Virginia law. Again, not that it
- 20:14Speaker 4: was ever illegal, it's just that, you know, it's such
- 20:17Speaker 4: a new concept that most states didn't have it codified
- 20:20Speaker 4: in law. They would have like a policy and procedure
- 20:23Speaker 4: through like their landmark university such as ours as WVU,
- 20:27Speaker 4: and normally everybody else would follow that. So you know,
- 20:31Speaker 4: early on a couple of states like Virginia and Florida,
- 20:33Speaker 4: they had codified it. So West Virginia we caught up
- 20:35Speaker 4: when they actually codified in IL. Just to tell you
- 20:38Speaker 4: what it is and what it's not, different things of
- 20:39Speaker 4: that nature, it's really simple bill. Now along with that,
- 20:42Speaker 4: which we can have some discussion on, is House Built
- 20:45Speaker 4: twenty five ninety five, and basically what that does is
- 20:48Speaker 4: that codifies NIL collectives. Now, previously nil collectives they were
- 20:55Speaker 4: sort of a third party. They were associated with the school,
- 21:00Speaker 4: but not really. And now with sort of the revenue
- 21:03Speaker 4: sharing model that that most schools and most states are following,
- 21:08Speaker 4: n I L excuse me, NIL collectives are directly tied
- 21:11Speaker 4: to the school. So not only can they you know,
- 21:15Speaker 4: raise money, generate revenue for the school far as you know,
- 21:19Speaker 4: paying some of the athletes through the ni L, but
- 21:21Speaker 4: they can also have kind of property share agreements and
- 21:24Speaker 4: and and you know not only the physical property, maybe
- 21:27Speaker 4: some IP properties. So they're directly tied where those student
- 21:30Speaker 4: athletes are getting paid through the through the school, through
- 21:33Speaker 4: the NIL collective, so basically through the school.
- 21:37Speaker 5: So so let me ask you this Hall. So this
- 21:39Speaker 5: did not exist before when these when these non profit
- 21:42Speaker 5: entities were in play, there there were non profit unities
- 21:45Speaker 5: to do the money right, but they weren't associated with, not.
- 21:48Speaker 4: Directly speciated with the school. So like like I said,
- 21:51Speaker 4: they were a third party. Although you had like somebody
- 21:53Speaker 4: like Georgia Tech. They had their collective and they had
- 21:56Speaker 4: sort of a grayish area where they would kind of
- 21:59Speaker 4: tie to the school but not but for most part
- 22:02Speaker 4: they were These collectors were formed of independent boosters who
- 22:06Speaker 4: didn't like you know, these these school Now what was
- 22:10Speaker 4: going through the school is just like I said, the
- 22:12Speaker 4: NIL agreement. So again as I mentioned earlier twenty five
- 22:16Speaker 4: seventy six that were quodify as in IL the contracts
- 22:20Speaker 4: and the school would say, you know, you can do this,
- 22:22Speaker 4: you can represent these brands like for example, athletes, they
- 22:25Speaker 4: can't represent like tobacco and alcohol.
- 22:28Speaker 3: And gaming, different things to that nature.
- 22:30Speaker 4: So they was sort of, like I said, set the policy,
- 22:32Speaker 4: but the third parties would actually do the pain. So
- 22:35Speaker 4: I think maybe what this has the ability to do,
- 22:38Speaker 4: it can sort of hone in some of the things,
- 22:41Speaker 4: make more uniform rules across maybe the nation, and you know,
- 22:46Speaker 4: set maybe some parameters on exactly you know, pay scales
- 22:50Speaker 4: and different things of that nature. So that almost the
- 22:53Speaker 4: way I look at it, it's almost working like you know,
- 22:56Speaker 4: sort of like a almost like a GM sort of
- 22:59Speaker 4: if that makes sense, because not only can they you know,
- 23:02Speaker 4: pay the players, but they can also help with different things,
- 23:05Speaker 4: like I said, licensing and contract agreements, some educational stuff
- 23:10Speaker 4: and different things of that. And you're talking when you're starting,
- 23:12Speaker 4: when you start talking about you're talking about like contract
- 23:17Speaker 4: deals with Nike or something like that. So instead of
- 23:22Speaker 4: me dealing with that kind of on my own and
- 23:25Speaker 4: quote I don't have an agent, Yeah, that can be
- 23:30Speaker 4: managed through the school essentially. Yes, So like like exactly
- 23:34Speaker 4: so branding deals, maybe even some ips. So if I'm like,
- 23:37Speaker 4: you know, remember Johnny Manziel with the money sign and
- 23:40Speaker 4: cool nicknames a lot of a lot of kids. They'll
- 23:42Speaker 4: do now, they'll license those names and copyright those images.
- 23:46Speaker 4: So these n IL collectors we may probably be able
- 23:50Speaker 4: to assist with some of those things. So it basically
- 23:53Speaker 4: it's keeping things in house. Now again, you know, if
- 23:56Speaker 4: that's a good thing, is that a bad thing? It
- 23:59Speaker 4: can depend.
- 24:00Speaker 3: My my question to it.
- 24:02Speaker 4: I think it's great. I think you know to have
- 24:04Speaker 4: the school so you don't get tricked. You know, you
- 24:07Speaker 4: have someone there at the school that's gonna assist you
- 24:10Speaker 4: with this process. What makes what's strange to me is
- 24:19Speaker 4: if I get that, why would I leave? You know,
- 24:22Speaker 4: I don't mean to bring up another subject, but you
- 24:23Speaker 4: know what I'm saying, like, if this school's gonna do
- 24:26Speaker 4: this for me, and not saying that every school won't
- 24:28Speaker 4: do it, you know, and you're giving me an io
- 24:31Speaker 4: money and you're helping me get it set up and
- 24:33Speaker 4: to where I know I'm gonna get it, that's gonna
- 24:35Speaker 4: be structured and all this kind of stuff.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Why would I leave?
- 24:38Speaker 4: I think the thing that gives me pause is that,
- 24:41Speaker 4: for example, again it becomes much simpler, well not even so,
- 24:46Speaker 4: like let's say, let's say you get a Nike deal.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Let's say that and you are a sophomore in college
- 24:53Speaker 4: basketball football player. You get a Nike deal. The Nike
- 24:56Speaker 4: deal is structured and the collectors helps set that up. Now,
- 25:01Speaker 4: what happens when you go pro? If do do they
- 25:04Speaker 4: continue to get a piece of that contract? What happens
- 25:07Speaker 4: if you are a creative college student and you set
- 25:11Speaker 4: up some sort of IP you got some cool I'm
- 25:14Speaker 4: Johnny Cash and you start selling T shirts out of
- 25:17Speaker 4: your own you know, you you made your own brand
- 25:19Speaker 4: and your image, and the collective's help set that up.
- 25:22Speaker 4: As that grows and continuing you have a professional career.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Do they maintain some sort of IP.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Rights with that?
- 25:29Speaker 4: So I think it's a good thing, but I think
- 25:32Speaker 4: it could get tricky as we go down the line. Well,
- 25:35Speaker 4: especially when you start talking about the top player. Let's
- 25:38Speaker 4: say you're the top player on the team and I
- 25:40Speaker 4: got I'm working with you. Well, you're gonna be a
- 25:43Speaker 4: first round pick. I ain't letting you go. You know
- 25:46Speaker 4: what I'm saying, I want to keep that because now
- 25:50Speaker 4: I'm am I your agent or am I just that guy?
- 25:53Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying, and that's what I'm saying the
- 25:55Speaker 4: length of the contract. So I would be it's gonna
- 25:57Speaker 4: be interesting to see how these are going to be implemented.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Man, Yeah, well, I was just gonna ask you. Is
- 26:02Speaker 5: another reason that this this House bill was passed was
- 26:05Speaker 5: it kind of protects the schools from like the NC
- 26:08Speaker 5: double A, from stepping in like if there's any it
- 26:10Speaker 5: blocks them from changing things, like it kind of guarantees
- 26:14Speaker 5: that this is this is the way it has to
- 26:16Speaker 5: be because it's in law.
- 26:17Speaker 3: Rather than the end hundred percent.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Like I said, this state law, like I said, and
- 26:22Speaker 4: like I said, each state is doing it differently, So
- 26:25Speaker 4: it does give some protection to the schools.
- 26:27Speaker 3: Like I said, far.
- 26:27Speaker 5: As proceeds the NC double A.
- 26:31Speaker 4: I don't I'm not, I'm I'm I don't want to
- 26:34Speaker 4: say that. But even within the bill itself, it did
- 26:37Speaker 4: give some protections to from from the conferences in school
- 26:40Speaker 4: from coming down because again, everybody, unfortunately when it comes
- 26:44Speaker 4: in n I L everybody's kind of doing it a
- 26:46Speaker 4: little different from state to state. There's no uniform policy,
- 26:49Speaker 4: you know what I mean.
- 26:50Speaker 5: I just wanted to say something that's related to this
- 26:52Speaker 5: really quick, guys, But I was reading through the article
- 26:55Speaker 5: about this bill, and it was kind of layman terms,
- 26:58Speaker 5: not not not so much of the the legal jargon,
- 27:00Speaker 5: but basically it was talking about the money is available
- 27:03Speaker 5: at this time, right now for the schools. And from
- 27:06Speaker 5: what I read, and this was from a reputable news source,
- 27:10Speaker 5: that WU has twenty point five million available to share
- 27:13Speaker 5: with their student athletes through this new entity, Marshall has
- 27:17Speaker 5: one point five million.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Yeah, so it's going to be it's like, and I
- 27:20Speaker 3: think that's.
- 27:21Speaker 5: Been so the disparity.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Yeah, and we've we've seen that through like even like
- 27:25Speaker 4: the NCAA and March madness ain't really been much madness.
- 27:27Speaker 4: That's one and two, right, And another interesting thing we'll
- 27:30Speaker 4: move on. But another interesting thing about the collectives is
- 27:33Speaker 4: not only do they you know, help form contracts with
- 27:36Speaker 4: different things in that nxture for the student athletes, but
- 27:38Speaker 4: there can be property move between you know, the collective
- 27:43Speaker 4: and the school. So it could be a situation in
- 27:46Speaker 4: which maybe that collective could have naming rights over the stadium,
- 27:49Speaker 4: or they could buy and sell land that's you know,
- 27:52Speaker 4: that the school has. And so that's what I'm saying.
- 27:55Speaker 4: It's not a clear cut.
- 27:57Speaker 3: You're making me feel a little a little one comfortable
- 28:00Speaker 3: with it.
- 28:02Speaker 4: So I think it's gonna be one of them things
- 28:04Speaker 4: that's gonna have to be. We're gonna have to see
- 28:06Speaker 4: it in action, and then as the years going, it's
- 28:09Speaker 4: gonna be it's gonna need to be probably tightened up.
- 28:12Speaker 4: You can guarantee that somebody's gonna do something wrong.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's that's the nature of it.
- 28:19Speaker 4: That you know, somebody's gonna get greedy, somebody's gonna show
- 28:22Speaker 4: up and be like, you know, oh, this took place
- 28:27Speaker 4: behind behind closed doors.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Yeah, there's just no way.
- 28:30Speaker 4: That with that kind of money out there available. Man,
- 28:33Speaker 4: I just don't see how that stays clean and a
- 28:37Speaker 4: good thing is.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Just and it's kind of independent.
- 28:39Speaker 4: When you talked about the disparity disparity between Marshall and WVU,
- 28:43Speaker 4: the good thing about it is that collective will be
- 28:45Speaker 4: tasked with raising that money up, so they would try
- 28:48Speaker 4: to one of the probably the primary things to do
- 28:50Speaker 4: is try to raise that difference from one point five up. Yes, Now,
- 28:54Speaker 4: what bill I really like is of House Bill twenty four.
- 28:57Speaker 4: And again, just for the view for anybody listening, these
- 29:00Speaker 4: are all current. All these haven't necessarily passed, they haven't
- 29:03Speaker 4: gone to the governor's signed these or things that's been
- 29:05Speaker 4: introduced in some passing the House. It's house built twenty
- 29:09Speaker 4: four to ninety one, which allows online raffles to college
- 29:12Speaker 4: is So, for example, if you go into a college
- 29:15Speaker 4: sporting event or prior high school for that matter, there's
- 29:18Speaker 4: fifty to fifty fifty fifty tickets, right. So what this
- 29:22Speaker 4: would do is that it would end the goo fencing.
- 29:26Speaker 4: So basically you could sell these fifty to fifty tickets
- 29:28Speaker 4: online so you wouldn't necessarily have a fifty a physical raffle,
- 29:32Speaker 4: and you could sell them to anybody across the country.
- 29:35Speaker 3: So for example, if.
- 29:35Speaker 4: You're at a WUVU game, you could sell a fifty
- 29:39Speaker 4: to fifty raffle tickets to not only everybody in the stands,
- 29:42Speaker 4: but anybody perceivably probably in the United States. So what
- 29:46Speaker 4: I like about this is that you like Yeah, what
- 29:50Speaker 4: you like about it is that you smaller schools. So
- 29:52Speaker 4: if you had like a state, and I think it
- 29:55Speaker 4: could do two things. Number One, it can raise revenue
- 29:58Speaker 4: again because you're not limited to the people that are
- 30:00Speaker 4: in the audience. And number two, it might raise viewership
- 30:04Speaker 4: because even like it's like a West Virginia State University,
- 30:06Speaker 4: where we're having our games broadcasting on like a website.
- 30:10Speaker 4: On our website, you may be encouraged to watch the
- 30:12Speaker 4: game in order to see if you won the fifty
- 30:14Speaker 4: to fifty raffle. So I think I think it could
- 30:17Speaker 4: be a net positive, particularly where we're at with with
- 30:20Speaker 4: n I l okay. So I don't, I don't. This
- 30:26Speaker 4: is not quote gambling, right, this is not like that.
- 30:29Speaker 3: I mean, I guess, but cut the raffle.
- 30:31Speaker 4: But what what what kills me is the whole the
- 30:35Speaker 4: whole gambling thing, you know, and and NFL and NBA
- 30:40Speaker 4: and all that kind of stuff. How players, Oh my gosh,
- 30:43Speaker 4: you there's no way you can gamble because there could
- 30:45Speaker 4: be a chance that you're gambling. You may be betting
- 30:48Speaker 4: against your team or whatever whatever whatever. So we need
- 30:51Speaker 4: to keep gambling out of sport.
- 30:54Speaker 3: Really.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Now we got now we've got the major commercials at
- 30:59Speaker 4: sporting of scambling. And now and we're gonna we're gonna
- 31:06Speaker 4: we're gonna try to do in college. We're gonna try
- 31:09Speaker 4: to take a step down from actually gambling and and
- 31:13Speaker 4: and let's call it fifty to fifty or you know,
- 31:16Speaker 4: all this kind of stuff so that we can make money.
- 31:20Speaker 4: I mean, but to you at least's point, Lisa pointed
- 31:23Speaker 4: out why this is important to school like Marshall, where
- 31:26Speaker 4: you got one point five in your collective versus w
- 31:29Speaker 4: VU where you got twenty.
- 31:30Speaker 3: You need so so so if I'm a player.
- 31:34Speaker 4: And I and I and I'm out there and I'm
- 31:35Speaker 4: doing this, I'm I'm putting my money in it, and
- 31:38Speaker 4: I can't pay. No, no, no, this is for this is
- 31:40Speaker 4: a this is a fit. It's just like it's damed
- 31:43Speaker 4: a game. Yeah it's not to outside the game, but.
- 31:46Speaker 3: I can't but I can't. I can't put my money
- 31:48Speaker 3: like I think you probably would be prohibited from doing that.
- 31:51Speaker 5: I'm gonna say that.
- 31:52Speaker 4: But why why It's just like if you work at
- 31:54Speaker 4: the lottery, you can't play the lottery.
- 31:57Speaker 5: I mean, I understand what what what Hollis is saying
- 32:00Speaker 5: about a way it's another way to raise the revenues
- 32:02Speaker 5: for these smaller schools and well even for the bigger
- 32:05Speaker 5: schools for that matter. I don't know what it is
- 32:07Speaker 5: about it, and maybe it's because I'm old school, but
- 32:11Speaker 5: the fifty to fifty raffle with the paper tickets at
- 32:14Speaker 5: the ball game seems innocent to me. Going online and
- 32:19Speaker 5: selling it nationwide takes it to a whole different level.
- 32:22Speaker 5: And I don't know why. I feel like there's just
- 32:24Speaker 5: so many things that could crash and burn with that.
- 32:29Speaker 5: I don't know. I feel like that there's things that
- 32:30Speaker 5: could it could get dirty. Does that Does that make sense?
- 32:35Speaker 3: I don't think so. Because you're selling to your family
- 32:37Speaker 3: is my issue is.
- 32:38Speaker 5: But you're saying, like you said, yeah, to your family,
- 32:42Speaker 5: but it could be.
- 32:42Speaker 3: At fad fan base.
- 32:43Speaker 5: Yeah, so it could go outside of the family.
- 32:45Speaker 3: I mean that's true. But normally, like I said, if
- 32:47Speaker 3: you if it's like why stay clean? Like why would
- 32:50Speaker 3: this state? I mean, but why would he get dirty?
- 32:52Speaker 3: It's a fifty fifty?
- 32:53Speaker 4: Why would he get dirty? It's a fifty fifty when
- 32:56Speaker 4: we ever heard of a problem.
- 32:57Speaker 3: I just think you can manipulate it more, make fifty.
- 33:00Speaker 4: You can make it when making a simple thing, or
- 33:03Speaker 4: you could actually say okay, it's kind of like I
- 33:08Speaker 4: envisiited like this, all right, so we're we're gonna sell
- 33:11Speaker 4: you the virtual tickets online, so and then you can
- 33:15Speaker 4: actually steal you can make it a spectacle, right because
- 33:18Speaker 4: you can sell these virtual tickets online, put them in
- 33:21Speaker 4: a huge bucket, and then at the halftime you can
- 33:24Speaker 4: actually pull out the physical the ticket and you can
- 33:26Speaker 4: actually announce it during the game. So I can now
- 33:29Speaker 4: sit and then go on lines and I can call
- 33:31Speaker 4: out who won. So it could be a big spectacle,
- 33:33Speaker 4: and I'm selling it to the fan base that are there.
- 33:35Speaker 4: So if it's a pit WVU, those are the fans
- 33:38Speaker 4: that's gonna be watching that game.
- 33:39Speaker 5: And to your point, the protein, like we we went
- 33:42Speaker 5: to a spring training game down in when we were
- 33:45Speaker 5: in clear Water, and they actually had something similar to
- 33:48Speaker 5: what you're saying, Like it wasn't the tip paper tickets
- 33:51Speaker 5: like I'm thinking about fifty to fifty you know in
- 33:53Speaker 5: high school games. It was actually they had like a
- 33:56Speaker 5: machine that could take a credit card or cash and
- 33:59Speaker 5: then they printed out all these tickets and then you
- 34:01Speaker 5: didn't have to be present to win. You could go
- 34:03Speaker 5: on a website and check your number. Not quite you know,
- 34:06Speaker 5: the video production that you're saying, it could could happen,
- 34:08Speaker 5: but it's already here.
- 34:10Speaker 3: I think it would be a good thing.
- 34:11Speaker 4: And we'll go over house built twenty four excuse me,
- 34:14Speaker 4: twenty twenty seven to seventy four. That basic creates an
- 34:18Speaker 4: increases penalties if somebody attacks a culture official. So I
- 34:22Speaker 4: think that's a good thing. Twenty House Built twenty three
- 34:25Speaker 4: fifty five. This bill would have Again, this bill got
- 34:29Speaker 4: soundly defeated. So this is not going into law. This
- 34:32Speaker 4: is dead, this is DA This is not a bill
- 34:34Speaker 4: that we'll see. This would have allowed high school and
- 34:38Speaker 4: middle schools to play not only during the end season sport,
- 34:42Speaker 4: but they would have been allowed to play travel at
- 34:44Speaker 4: the same time. This was a horrible bill, horrible nobody
- 34:47Speaker 4: liked it. Like I said, it got soundly pitted the
- 34:50Speaker 4: pasture where it should have been because it was dramatically problematic.
- 34:55Speaker 4: All right, I'm going to break it. I'm going to

- 36:10Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we have lost our one
- 36:14Speaker 4: of our co hosts, Hollis Lewis.
- 36:16Speaker 3: We were in a fight anyway, when we were leaving.
- 36:19Speaker 5: Mike dropped in the last.
- 36:22Speaker 3: He made his point, got to get out of the way.
- 36:25Speaker 4: So all right, so so let's let's we're gonna kind
- 36:29Speaker 4: of change the direction a little bit. You know, we
- 36:34Speaker 4: we talked and again let's go to n Aisle and
- 36:36Speaker 4: let's let's talk the effect and impact that it has
- 36:41Speaker 4: on let's say basketball and collegiate basketball. Yes, in most cases,
- 36:50Speaker 4: every year, huge upsets, right, everybody like gets excited because
- 36:56Speaker 4: there's these upsets.
- 36:57Speaker 5: Sure not this year?
- 37:00Speaker 3: Not this year?
- 37:02Speaker 5: You plan basketball.
- 37:03Speaker 3: Ones and twos.
- 37:07Speaker 4: Are basically in the semis right.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Now, I'm going to make the case.
- 37:13Speaker 4: Now I could be dead wrong here, Nil, it is
- 37:17Speaker 4: all part of that. I think those particular teams could
- 37:22Speaker 4: very well be the strongest teams based off of their
- 37:26Speaker 4: nil or let's just say, the most skilled players that
- 37:31Speaker 4: any teams could actually feel like, what, what do you
- 37:35Speaker 4: think that?
- 37:36Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I would not disagree with that statement.
- 37:38Speaker 5: I mean, obviously, what happened this year during March Madness
- 37:41Speaker 5: was far from madness. We had no cinderellas. It was
- 37:45Speaker 5: you know, pretty much the teams that were supposed to
- 37:48Speaker 5: win won their games, and usually by quite a margin.
- 37:50Speaker 5: It wasn't a lot of close games. Now at the beginning,
- 37:53Speaker 5: I think there was maybe one or two and I
- 37:54Speaker 5: can't think of the names of the teams. It escapes me.
- 37:56Speaker 5: But there was maybe one that made it pass that
- 37:58Speaker 5: first round, but then the second game it wasn't even close.
- 38:01Speaker 5: So what you're saying with the nil and the and
- 38:04Speaker 5: the portal, I mean that that that is is just it.
- 38:09Speaker 5: It's tamed March Madness, so to speak. I think what's
- 38:13Speaker 5: happened is when you do get a Cinderella team like
- 38:16Speaker 5: you're I think the Florida Golf Coast, you know that
- 38:19Speaker 5: was one that years ago you had a had a
- 38:22Speaker 5: really great deep run as a Cinderella in the March Madness.
- 38:26Speaker 5: You've had teams like James Madison University. I'm just throwing
- 38:31Speaker 5: names that from the past. You know, probably what's happened
- 38:34Speaker 5: to those teams. They build a great team that could
- 38:37Speaker 5: that can compete with these blue bloods and these schools
- 38:41Speaker 5: that are typically you know, household names Duke, North Carolina,
- 38:45Speaker 5: and and they they those teams come in and and
- 38:49Speaker 5: they take those quality players, those players that that that
- 38:52Speaker 5: have been developed by that smaller school, and they end
- 38:55Speaker 5: up going to the bigger schools and building dynasties.
- 39:01Speaker 3: And I think there was like a.
- 39:05Speaker 4: Like maybe like a two or three hundred number of
- 39:09Speaker 4: actual NIL players that have gone somewhere else.
- 39:13Speaker 3: Sure, Just I mean, like now right, like to me.
- 39:22Speaker 4: What is the stability of collegiate sports?
- 39:25Speaker 3: Like, like, I.
- 39:27Speaker 4: Mean, are we can you get a team and say,
- 39:31Speaker 4: oh I love this team. I you know all the
- 39:33Speaker 4: way down to the sixth man, I you know, I
- 39:36Speaker 4: love this team.
- 39:36Speaker 3: This team is solid.
- 39:38Speaker 4: You have one season, right to enjoy that group, right,
- 39:44Speaker 4: and as soon as that season gets remotely close to
- 39:49Speaker 4: being over, three or four of those guys are going to.
- 39:53Speaker 5: Be gone, right sure, because they're gonna go where there's
- 39:55Speaker 5: more money.
- 39:56Speaker 3: They're gonna go where there's more money.
- 39:57Speaker 5: And name, you know the name of this and you know, do.
- 40:01Speaker 3: You think the name? Do you think the name matters
- 40:03Speaker 3: or does the money matter?
- 40:04Speaker 4: Well?
- 40:04Speaker 5: I think I think it's a combination, Carl, because I
- 40:07Speaker 5: mean they want a chance. I mean, if you're at
- 40:09Speaker 5: a smaller school, what are the odds that you're going
- 40:12Speaker 5: to make it in March Madness and make a deep run.
- 40:14Speaker 5: Whereas if you're at one of those schools, why do
- 40:17Speaker 5: not have a double bonus? Why not get the money
- 40:19Speaker 5: and have a chance to make a run in March
- 40:22Speaker 5: Madness in the national championship? To me, and they kind
- 40:26Speaker 5: of go hand in hand.
- 40:27Speaker 4: Anyway, here's what's interesting to me, and everything that you
- 40:31Speaker 4: said is one correct. I'm sitting here and I'm thinking
- 40:37Speaker 4: in my mind as you ask a question and answering it, right, Like,
- 40:42Speaker 4: I'm thinking to myself, well, what am I thinking about?
- 40:46Speaker 4: What would I be thinking about? I'm thinking about trying
- 40:49Speaker 4: to get the Sunday right, I'm trying to play on Sunday.
- 40:53Speaker 4: I didn't have the access to the money.
- 40:57Speaker 3: My access to.
- 40:58Speaker 4: The money was being able to get to Right. We're
- 41:03Speaker 4: we're paying kids now.
- 41:06Speaker 3: Who they don't eat. So how do I motivate them
- 41:09Speaker 3: to get to the NBA? You know what I'm saying.
- 41:12Speaker 3: When you can make life.
- 41:15Speaker 4: Changing money at the collegiate level, at the collegiate level,
- 41:18Speaker 4: right and do nothing after.
- 41:20Speaker 5: That, right, I mean like that could that could become
- 41:24Speaker 5: a problem for professional sports in the long run. I
- 41:26Speaker 5: mean I truly believe that because you think about it.
- 41:29Speaker 5: I mean, if they can make that kind of, like
- 41:30Speaker 5: you said, life changing money in their youth and they've
- 41:34Speaker 5: got that money and they really you know, if they
- 41:37Speaker 5: if they have risk for injury in the NFL, I
- 41:40Speaker 5: mean other than the NOTORIETI I think a player would
- 41:42Speaker 5: want to make it to the professional level for the notariate,
- 41:45Speaker 5: but possibly in the future, it won't be for the money.
- 41:48Speaker 3: And I'm going to make the case to to that point.
- 41:51Speaker 4: There's going to be a ton of players who will
- 41:54Speaker 4: make a bunch of money at the collegiate level, right
- 41:57Speaker 4: and not play.
- 41:58Speaker 5: It exactly, That's what I'm saying.
- 42:00Speaker 3: Other than that they don't have to. They won't have to,
- 42:03Speaker 3: nor will they maybe even be good enough.
- 42:05Speaker 5: Right, they won't have to, yep, or you're right, it
- 42:07Speaker 5: won't matter. They'll have that money and they won't have
- 42:10Speaker 5: that motivation.
- 42:12Speaker 3: How is that okay?
- 42:13Speaker 6: Like?
- 42:13Speaker 1: How is that?
- 42:14Speaker 3: Like? How are we just okay with that?
- 42:18Speaker 4: I get a parent, I get a parent from a
- 42:21Speaker 4: from a talented high school kid who's getting ready to
- 42:25Speaker 4: go to college, and there's a bunch of people talking
- 42:28Speaker 4: about a bunch.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Of money for him or her. I'm behind you, because, hey,
- 42:35Speaker 3: the future, what the future? Right?
- 42:40Speaker 4: But on the on on, on my on my professional
- 42:44Speaker 4: athlete side, I look at it, and I'm thinking, you mean,
- 42:50Speaker 4: if if I go back, if I could have gone
- 42:52Speaker 4: back to Marshall and been one of the better players
- 42:56Speaker 4: on our teams that were not very.
- 42:58Speaker 3: Good, how much Nio money could I have made, and.
- 43:03Speaker 4: Maybe now I don't have all the aches and pains.
- 43:07Speaker 5: That come along when with the professional football league. I
- 43:12Speaker 5: get it. Yeah, well, you know, I totally agree with
- 43:16Speaker 5: everything you're saying too, Carl. But something I saw and
- 43:19Speaker 5: I wish Hollis was still here, and I wanted to
- 43:21Speaker 5: bring it up, but I know he had to go
- 43:24Speaker 5: in that house spill twenty five seventy six. Something that
- 43:27Speaker 5: caught my eye. It has to do with NI our
- 43:29Speaker 5: discussion was allowing schools to keep nil deals private. This
- 43:35Speaker 5: was part of the verbiage of this bill in West Virginia,
- 43:38Speaker 5: and it also prevents other schools. What kind of the
- 43:42Speaker 5: intent of it is to prevent other schools from outbidding
- 43:46Speaker 5: for players. Now, I understand the intent of that. I
- 43:50Speaker 5: understand trying to keep it private, but can you really
- 43:52Speaker 5: keep it private? I mean other than maybe not release
- 43:55Speaker 5: it immediately to the media. But if a school see
- 44:00Speaker 5: a player and he's a quality player, let's say, let's
- 44:03Speaker 5: play along with WVU and and your Georgia Okay, okay,
- 44:07Speaker 5: and you know he is he is just a perfect
- 44:10Speaker 5: fit for your school. You're gonna find out one way
- 44:13Speaker 5: or the other where there's a will. There's a way
- 44:15Speaker 5: you're gonna find out how much WVU is paying that player,
- 44:18Speaker 5: so that you can obtain him on your on your terms,
- 44:21Speaker 5: with more money.
- 44:22Speaker 3: Probably if if that's if that's my son.
- 44:25Speaker 8: Yeah, and so WVU gave is going to give him
- 44:31Speaker 8: two million, two million dollars, yes, you know, And all
- 44:35Speaker 8: of a sudden here comes whoever, right, and they're saying,
- 44:42Speaker 8: we think we got a good deal, you know, and
- 44:44Speaker 8: we could really use yourself exactly, And.
- 44:48Speaker 5: So that the outbidding thing. I mean, I understand the
- 44:51Speaker 5: intent of it, but is that possible even? I mean,
- 44:53Speaker 5: I think that's what's happening with March madness as we speak,
- 44:56Speaker 5: with all these players going in the portal. You don't
- 44:58Speaker 5: enter the portal unless you know where you're somebody's already
- 45:01Speaker 5: somebody's already talked to you. Yes, you're not just going
- 45:03Speaker 5: to enter the portal. Oh, let's see what happens here.
- 45:05Speaker 5: You you have intent, you know where you're going.
- 45:08Speaker 3: I do think that there are some.
- 45:11Speaker 4: I'll call them kids, who jump into portal with the
- 45:14Speaker 4: idea of let me see if I could get some bites.
- 45:17Speaker 5: I think it's a small percentage at.
- 45:19Speaker 3: A small percentage.
- 45:20Speaker 4: But I think most of the players who are playing
- 45:23Speaker 4: on another team, who go into the.
- 45:25Speaker 5: Portal and are starting, and.
- 45:26Speaker 4: They're starting, there's a there's already been a conversation regardless
- 45:31Speaker 4: of whether or not you see.
- 45:33Speaker 5: Give that money up. I mean, whatever you're getting paid,
- 45:35Speaker 5: if you're a starter at Saint John's or whatever basketball team,
- 45:39Speaker 5: you're not going to give up what you have. And
- 45:41Speaker 5: they go to the portal and go to the portal
- 45:43Speaker 5: unless you have a better deal.
- 45:46Speaker 3: That you've got a better.
- 45:47Speaker 5: So I don't know how. I mean, I understand that
- 45:50Speaker 5: you know, and maybe Hollis can verify that for me.
- 45:52Speaker 5: But I did read that online and I thought to myself,
- 45:54Speaker 5: I understand the intent of it, but is it possible.
- 45:57Speaker 5: I don't know if that's possible.
- 45:58Speaker 4: I don't I don't know how you can. I don't
- 46:01Speaker 4: know how you can keep contracts like that quiet.
- 46:06Speaker 3: I mean, where is it? Where is it that it's quiet? Yeah?
- 46:10Speaker 4: And actually in the NFL it used to be quote quiet,
- 46:13Speaker 4: like you go in, you sign your contract and nobody
- 46:16Speaker 4: really is supposed to quote supposed to know. Well, within
- 46:21Speaker 4: within a couple of days, everybody knows what your contract is.
- 46:25Speaker 5: Sure, how that happened.
- 46:27Speaker 3: I didn't say anything.
- 46:28Speaker 4: I didn't tell anybody, right, but now all of a sudden,
- 46:31Speaker 4: guys now think, oh, well he got fifty dollars, I deserve.
- 46:35Speaker 5: One hundred, right right.
- 46:37Speaker 4: There's just no to me, there's two roadways being able
- 46:41Speaker 4: to keep that private or quiet or whatever you want
- 46:44Speaker 4: to call it.
- 46:44Speaker 5: There need to there needs to be more oversight of
- 46:48Speaker 5: this whole portal, of the of the nil contracts, all
- 46:51Speaker 5: the things. There has to be some rules. I think
- 46:55Speaker 5: there was a clip that maybe you shared in our group,
- 46:57Speaker 5: Carl about It was a sport commentator talking about maybe
- 47:02Speaker 5: a way to possibly remedy these situations with these players leaving,
- 47:08Speaker 5: you know, from one school to another to another and
- 47:10Speaker 5: not staying is to make a contract two years long
- 47:14Speaker 5: rather than just one, because then they have to fulfill
- 47:17Speaker 5: at least the whole season and they can't just jump
- 47:19Speaker 5: ship and take the money with them.
- 47:21Speaker 3: I think I think that's the only real way.
- 47:26Speaker 4: There isn't like a Okay, all right, so you're you're
- 47:30Speaker 4: you're coming in as a freshman, I'm giving you.
- 47:34Speaker 3: A million dollars.
- 47:36Speaker 4: To to to to play basketball, right, Okay, Well you
- 47:41Speaker 4: do exactly what we thought you were going to do.
- 47:45Speaker 3: But now after your first year, you're ready. You you
- 47:49Speaker 3: were so.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Good, everybody's trying to trying to get you to come
- 47:53Speaker 4: to their place. Well, now I've got a bid for
- 47:56Speaker 4: you again. Yeah, and and and I'm lose. So to
- 48:02Speaker 4: your to the concept of you can't have a one
- 48:05Speaker 4: year deal, right, you gotta have you gotta have either
- 48:10Speaker 4: a two.
- 48:10Speaker 5: Year exactly at least at least.
- 48:13Speaker 4: A two year deal and a max. So let's say
- 48:16Speaker 4: you really want to do the money, you got to
- 48:18Speaker 4: say you do a mix of three years, right, So
- 48:21Speaker 4: now in three years for you to leave your last
- 48:24Speaker 4: year makes no sense.
- 48:26Speaker 3: Okay, But but depending on whether the team is.
- 48:29Speaker 5: You I was gonna say it depends, but at.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Least you get I get you for three years, right,
- 48:34Speaker 4: and guarantee I can lock you up for three years,
- 48:36Speaker 4: so I don't have to.
- 48:37Speaker 5: Worry about it. And that's really gonna benefit these smaller scoes,
- 48:40Speaker 5: really will because what happens is when they get good
- 48:42Speaker 5: and they build a team and they develop players, immediately
- 48:46Speaker 5: those kids are snatched up by it. Like I said,
- 48:48Speaker 5: it's become a farm league. It's a farm league like baseball.
- 48:51Speaker 4: And let me let me make that picture even clearer
- 48:55Speaker 4: for people. So you're gonna send your kid to me,
- 49:01Speaker 4: I'm going to pour everything into him or her trying.
- 49:05Speaker 3: To get them to be the best player.
- 49:08Speaker 5: They can be well rounded, well rounded.
- 49:11Speaker 4: Student athlete, the picture perfect student athlete.
- 49:14Speaker 3: Sure, so I get that accomplished. He or she's playing
- 49:20Speaker 3: playing well, clearly has a future.
- 49:25Speaker 4: And all of a sudden, you come in and you say, well, coach,
- 49:28Speaker 4: thank you for everything that you've done. I be really
- 49:31Speaker 4: really appreciated. But I think what we're gonna do is
- 49:34Speaker 4: we're going to.
- 49:35Speaker 3: Go to Florida. Yeah exactly, and we're gonna play for them.
- 49:39Speaker 5: Or you have to pay the money back one or
- 49:42Speaker 5: the others. Either if you sign a long contract at
- 49:44Speaker 5: least two years with the school or wherever you're going
- 49:47Speaker 5: at least two years, or you give back your in
- 49:52Speaker 5: I own money or whatever it was your compensation.
- 49:54Speaker 3: I'll even make the case.
- 49:55Speaker 4: So let's say, let's say I give you I'll give
- 49:58Speaker 4: you a hundred thousand dollars as a as a freshman. It's
- 50:01Speaker 4: true freshman, one hundred thousand dollars, which you probably will
- 50:05Speaker 4: turn down.
- 50:06Speaker 3: But I'm gonna give you a hundred.
- 50:08Speaker 5: Buch of my mind. But yes, but one hundred.
- 50:10Speaker 3: Thousand dollars, you play X number of games, right, will
- 50:17Speaker 3: add to that if you win.
- 50:19Speaker 8: If you win, maybe you got for this incent in
- 50:23Speaker 8: base Yes, I like it.
- 50:25Speaker 3: You know, because that's how the league used to be.
- 50:29Speaker 5: If we're going that route, we might as well like
- 50:31Speaker 5: model after that route. Absolutely, contracts and all, so you
- 50:34Speaker 5: could even have a cap.
- 50:35Speaker 4: You could get a hundred, you could get one hundred
- 50:37Speaker 4: thousand dollars could be your contract, and then you have
- 50:39Speaker 4: these incentives that you have.
- 50:42Speaker 5: To reach right to get the rest of your money, to.
- 50:44Speaker 3: Get the rest of your money. And if you don't
- 50:46Speaker 3: reach them.
- 50:47Speaker 4: Yeah, now the one bad, the worst one, let's just
- 50:51Speaker 4: say for basketball.
- 50:53Speaker 3: Would be points point score.
- 50:56Speaker 5: Oh well, you couldn't go because.
- 50:58Speaker 4: Because now you get the challenge in the and that
- 51:01Speaker 4: is I'm going into the in the last week of
- 51:04Speaker 4: the game and I'm twenty five points short.
- 51:08Speaker 3: I'm shooting until I get twenty.
- 51:09Speaker 5: Yeah, you couldn't do it in basketball that way.
- 51:11Speaker 3: I mean, but there's just there has to be something.
- 51:15Speaker 5: Better than what we have.
- 51:18Speaker 3: That's what we have, and I just I really don't
- 51:21Speaker 3: know what it is.
- 51:22Speaker 5: And and I'll tell you, like I said earlier, this
- 51:25Speaker 5: was eye opening to me when I saw the available
- 51:28Speaker 5: you know, monies for student athletes. And this is just
- 51:31Speaker 5: in the state of West Virginia. When you see that
- 51:34Speaker 5: WU has twenty point five million compared to Marshall's one
- 51:39Speaker 5: point five, right, I mean, you think about that, and
- 51:42Speaker 5: you think about these large Ohio state Georgia, think about
- 51:46Speaker 5: the money is available to them if WVU has I
- 51:48Speaker 5: mean I thought that was a large amount. Actually I
- 51:51Speaker 5: didn't expect that amount for WVU, so that was kind
- 51:54Speaker 5: of like eye opening for me. But then I think,
- 51:57Speaker 5: you know, WU is not on the same level some
- 52:00Speaker 5: of these you know, National champ big you know, the
- 52:03Speaker 5: the SEC. And I'm not saying they're not great. They are.
- 52:06Speaker 5: I mean, I love w I don't want people to
- 52:07Speaker 5: take that the wrong way, and I love Marshall as well,
- 52:10Speaker 5: but I'm saying, you think about those teams that are
- 52:12Speaker 5: on a different level as far as Notre Dames, with
- 52:15Speaker 5: their with their alumni, with with with their fan base,
- 52:19Speaker 5: all of that, you know, just the sheer numbers that
- 52:21Speaker 5: these other people or these other teams have behind them.
- 52:24Speaker 5: It blows my mind to think how much, especially these
- 52:26Speaker 5: private schools that don't have to don't have to tip,
- 52:28Speaker 5: they don't have to tell us.
- 52:30Speaker 4: And again to your point, the difference in just the
- 52:32Speaker 4: difference in Marshall and WU speaks.
- 52:35Speaker 3: Volumes of.
- 52:38Speaker 4: What what's the difference between WU and Alabama?
- 52:42Speaker 5: That's what I mean. Yeah, yeah, so that that that
- 52:45Speaker 5: is to me just you can't even imagine, you know,
- 52:47Speaker 5: And and I don't know. I don't know how you
- 52:51Speaker 5: regulate that like it's it doesn't I don't know how
- 52:54Speaker 5: you regulate the money. I mean, it'll never be unless
- 52:59Speaker 5: you regulate it. I l because like we said, the
- 53:01Speaker 5: Marshall remember the ninety nineties with the Marshall teams that
- 53:04Speaker 5: we had back that those would never have existed. They
- 53:07Speaker 5: would have never They would have been destroyed within their
- 53:10Speaker 5: first year or two.
- 53:11Speaker 3: Everybody would have been gone. They would have been gone.
- 53:14Speaker 5: Chad Pennington, Randy Moss. There's no way.
- 53:18Speaker 4: Randy Moss plays one year at Marshall and he's gone
- 53:22Speaker 4: to wherever.
- 53:22Speaker 3: They are all sure team or the highest bidding team is.
- 53:27Speaker 5: Why wouldn't Why wouldn't he all of them? Chad Pennington,
- 53:30Speaker 5: all of them? You think about all the great quarterbacks
- 53:33Speaker 5: that came through Marshall, They would they would have been
- 53:35Speaker 5: there one year, one and done one and done.
- 53:37Speaker 4: And and you and you and you create a situation
- 53:42Speaker 4: to where now your history what you what your history
- 53:45Speaker 4: could have been?
- 53:47Speaker 5: Yeah, it's now gone, right, And that's what that's what's
- 53:50Speaker 5: happening now.
- 53:51Speaker 3: It is and I don't and it's getting.
- 53:54Speaker 5: I don't want to say boring, but March Madness was
- 53:59Speaker 5: not as much fun this year as it was five
- 54:03Speaker 5: ten years ago because especially if your team didn't like
- 54:06Speaker 5: w didn't get invited, So that was kind of a downer. Anyway.
- 54:09Speaker 5: We knew Marshall didn't have a chance, but you know,
- 54:11Speaker 5: we really didn't have a home team to broot for.
- 54:13Speaker 5: So when you go into March Madness, you're kind of
- 54:15Speaker 5: picking out this cinderellas, you know, like you want those
- 54:18Speaker 5: number sixteams and right for you know, just to give
- 54:21Speaker 5: them a shot to win, you know, and hopefully have
- 54:23Speaker 5: somebody to make it exciting. And that just didn't happen
- 54:27Speaker 5: this year.
- 54:27Speaker 3: And it's and and and.
- 54:30Speaker 4: Making the point it's it's not gonna be possible because
- 54:35Speaker 4: you're not even on those teams. They're not gonna be
- 54:39Speaker 4: that good player that's gonna stay around Now long enough.
- 54:43Speaker 5: Even if they do, they're gone.
- 54:44Speaker 3: They're gonna be gone.
- 54:45Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, you're you're not gonna be able to
- 54:47Speaker 4: hold two or three players on age.
- 54:49Speaker 5: And it's gonna happen the same in college football, car
- 54:52Speaker 5: it is. It's gonna be the same teams every year
- 54:54Speaker 5: competing for the national championship. It almost is now, it
- 54:57Speaker 5: almost is now. It's a rotation.
- 55:00Speaker 3: Hold me to this.
- 55:02Speaker 4: When we start getting into next season and you start
- 55:06Speaker 4: looking to who's gone where you know because of inn
- 55:12Speaker 4: I L.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Right, what's gonna happen is.
- 55:16Speaker 4: The teams that you thought going into the season was
- 55:19Speaker 4: going to be good, but they're not going to have
- 55:22Speaker 4: the players because those players are going to go wherever
- 55:25Speaker 4: the money is.
- 55:27Speaker 5: Yes, that's that's the trend, it seems so we'll see that.
- 55:32Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, we clearly you know where we
- 55:37Speaker 4: stand when it comes to in I L and all
- 55:39Speaker 4: of that kind of stuff. It's just crazy. But we've
- 55:44Speaker 4: got to get out of here. We our time is up,
- 55:47Speaker 4: all right. We will look forward to seeing it again.
- 55:50Speaker 4: Thank you, see you later.
- 55:52Speaker 5: See you later. Thanks guys.
