- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Hi, I'm Dr.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Patty Ferris.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: I'm a board certified dermatologist, and I'm your host of this episode of Skin Care Confidential.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: We're excited about our Skin Suiticals Takeover, and this episode with my good friend and colleague, Dr.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Jill Weibel, is going to be talking about some data that she produced in conjunction with the Skin Suticles team.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: I'm going to start by reading some of Jill's bio.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: And by the way, Jill, you have a two-page bio.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: So, like, you're so ridiculously accomplished.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: I gotta cut it down.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: Or we'll be here all night.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: But it's really impressive.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Of course, she's a board-certified dermatologist.
- 0:56SPEAKER_02: She does medical dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, and specializes in cutaneous laser surgery.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: She's based in Miami at the Miami Dermatology Laser Institute, where she serves as the medical director and she is also the owner.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: In addition to private practice, she's the subsection chief of dermatology at Baptist Hospital and the Medical Director of Miami Cancer Institute's multidisciplinary skin cancer clinic.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: She also serves as a clinical volunteer assistant professor at the University of Miami.
- 1:26SPEAKER_02: What she's most well known for is that she is a world-recognized leader and innovator in Durham laser surgery.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: She lectures all over the world, and I've heard her lecture many times, amazing lectures.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: In her own practice, this blew my mind, Jill.
- 1:41SPEAKER_02: You have 65 lasers?
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Very blessed.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: Very blessed.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: What do you have?
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: Like 100,000 square feet?
- 1:49SPEAKER_01: Well, we just yes.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Laser on top of a laser.
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: I just built a new facility.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: And it took 20 years to get all those.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: It didn't happen in one year.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: That's unbelievable.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: She uses these for both medical and cosmetic applications.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: The thing that Jill really specializes in is the treatment of scars.
- 2:07SPEAKER_02: And she's well known for this, where she's been really a trailblazer and an innovator.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: She has also published in so many peer-review articles, textbook chapters.
- 2:17SPEAKER_02: She's a member of Aslums and serves on the medical advisory board of many leading manufacturers, especially laser companies.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: She's received awards like Be the Person of the Week for ABC World News.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: That's so such an honor.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: And she in 2017 received the Aslums Leadership and Mentorship and Public Advocacy for Women and Medical Science Award.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: She's got lots of other awards, but right now I'm going to go ahead and turn it over to Jill.
- 2:43SPEAKER_02: So, Jill, welcome to Skincare Confidential.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Patty.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: That was such a nice introduction.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: And you are equally, you know, more accomplished than me.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: So it's a pleasure to be with you.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: It'd be ridiculous.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: I'm older than you.
- 2:54SPEAKER_02: It's the only reason.
- 2:55unknown: Not true.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: No, I I can assure you you're more accomplished than I am, but we're we're we've both been running in the same circles for a very long time.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: So I just sort of as an icebreaker, I would love to know how you became interested in laser surgery.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Well, it's it's a good story, especially for women.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: So I wanted to be a general surgeon in med school.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: And as you know, when you're in medical school, if you're going to do a specialty, you have to go all out.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: So I was I'm old enough that we didn't have hours.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: And so sergeant or Captain Turk, he was an army general surgeon, if you can imagine.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: And he was the head of the surgical fellowship in Cincinnati.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: And so you had to wake up at four in the morning and work all day long.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: And then at night, Dr.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Turk would take myself and the other one that was really interested to his house.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And he he never married.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: He had a curtain that opened up, velvet curtain, and he would lecture us from like 10 at night until one in the morning.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And then we'd go home and sleep for an hour, wake up and go back to surgery.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: I did this for eight weeks.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: This is crazy.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Crazy.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I'm killing it.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna match and surgery.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do it.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: And on week nine, he looks at me and he goes, You should be a dermatologist.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I was crushed.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: I was offended, but it really was a compliment.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: He meant it because he thought I had good hands.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: He knew surgery was going towards robotics, and he knew I had the intelligence or the grades because we're very blessed in dermatology.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: So he's like, On Monday, I want you to go be work with Dr.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Haney at University of Cincinnati.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: And I was bad attitude, Jill.
- 4:32SPEAKER_01: And so I tromps down in January to Dr.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Haney's office, and he's like, Today we're gonna be lasering kids with port wine birthmarks and hemangiomas.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: And I was done.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: I was a junior medical, you know, third year medical student.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: And when I saw those lasers, I'm like, that's what I want to do when I grow up.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: So I was very lucky that I got to do that when I grew up.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: That is a great story.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: General surgery to dermatology, that's that's an interesting transition.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:01SPEAKER_02: Well, let's talk about laser surgery.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: So we know that a huge part of all outcomes of any laser treatment is the post-procedure care, even the pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and and post-procedure.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: But how do you sort of in general go about selecting products uh for our listeners?
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: What what are some of the things you consider?
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: So actually, some of our number one complications post laser, no matter what laser you're using, come from using the wrong products after.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: Amen.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: Amen.
- 5:32SPEAKER_01: So on my post laser sheet, I literally say, do not use anything that we have not recommended because after years of using grandma's lavender and getting a lot of contact dermatitis or other issues.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: So one of the things you have to think is are you doing a light laser, a non-ablative, a hair removal, brown spots, rosacea, or are you doing something major like resurfacing?
- 5:55SPEAKER_01: So for the non-ablative devices, you know, we tend to use mild products afterwards.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: No active ingredients.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: You want to use even over some of the overcounted things like Cetophil and Cera V are great.
- 6:06SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: I love Avine.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: And what um each one of us, every doctor in our practice has the cut the picture of our products, and we circle them and hand them to patients.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: It's old school, but they love it because it's and I say use exactly this product.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm a huge vitamin C ferrulic fanatic.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: I was just gonna say, you did that great study with CE Farulic.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so we studied it after fractional ablative laser, and Dr.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Geronimus studied it after non-ablative.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: So the other thing I tell doctors and patients alike is you don't want to use anything after laser that hasn't been well studied because we don't want to rev up the skin.
- 6:43SPEAKER_01: And and Patty, you're obviously the world expert in uh skincare.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: And then you've sunscreen's another one you have to be careful with.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: You know, for the first 24 to 48 hours after laser, your barrier is down.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Um, and so you know, sometimes we put a hold on sunscreen for a couple of days.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then it can be a prop.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: It can be, and then you have to be very diligent a week to to a month out from having a laser with your sun protection.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: But you know, we only like to use skincare in general, and and Patty, you might want to talk about this, that is synergistically going to improve the skin.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: I don't let anybody use any product that's not gonna do something good for them.
- 7:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that's really brings us to the study.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and like I said, you did the great study with CE Farulic, and then you looked at another skin pseudicles product, a new one, which is RG-6, RG6, I guess they call it, and you tested it post laser.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: So tell us about this study.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: And this was published or was presented as I guess an abstract at the American Academy of Dermatology or poster.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: Yes, it was, and we're we're um we have the final data coming in and we will publish it.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Gotcha.
- 7:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this will be.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: I am lucky enough to have this is could be the first one seen um in the public.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: But this is launching in April in the United States.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: The United States will be the first to launch it.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: And they went back and forth be between calling RGN6 and Regen6, but it's regenerative six.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: And this is a complete innovation in skincare product.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: So I won't do this justice, but the way they developed it at Skin Suiticals here.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, I can't see it, is they took um a skin biopsy of normal skin, and then next door they lasered it with the Erbium, a blade of laser, and then they took another biopsy.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Then they analyzed the genomics, the different genes between the normal skin and the lasered skin.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: And then they went to AI and they wanted to know what I know this is amazing, what ingredients would help restore the genes that changed after laser to help it heal and regenerate.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: And their AI started with like two million products and got it down to six now.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: What's incredible is so we we did what we call, or we L'Oreal skinticals did laser genomics and used artificial intelligence and came up with six ingredients.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: Now, Patty, you can speak to this.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: No skincare products have six ingredients because they usually don't work.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: But what they put in this bottle was an anti-inflammatory chemical called 1% eperline.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: They have um an anti-inflammatory antioxidant, which is what they're known for.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: Then they did a barrier repair called glycorepair, which after laser is so important to have that hydration.
- 9:40SPEAKER_01: Then they did a bioceramide that is a L'Oreal exclusively made molecule.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: So that's the fourth one.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: The fifth one is a tetrapeptide.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: So an extracellular matrix protein that's going to stimulate collagen and elastin.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: And then they threw in some niacinamide really to help for all skin types, for skin cancer prevention and for PIH.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: Love barrier.
- 10:02SPEAKER_02: I love niacinamide.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so what a what what an interesting story.
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: What an innovative way to look at product formulation and ingredient selection.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: I know they I think it revolutionized this entire field to use genomics and AI.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: And then for the master chemists to be able to put it into one product.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, it really is mind-blowing.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: Um, and so that's why you know Skin Suticles is the leader in skincare.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they really are.
- 10:33SPEAKER_02: They've been so ahead of the curve for so long, and and all dermatologists love this brand.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: This episode is brought to you by Skin Suticles, the number one medical aesthetic skincare brand worldwide, and the leader in antioxidant science.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: To learn more, visit www.skinseuticals.com.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: So talk about the study.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: You did it with Erbium, didn't you?
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: We did.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: So the first thing to know is, you know, and again, um, so many products, you know, uh as you've probably talked about in other podcasts, cosmoceuticals aren't regulated by the FDA.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: There are some safety studies and some toxicity studies that everybody has to do.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: But, you know, I really respect that Skin Pseuticals is so robust about the efficacy data.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: So there were studies before me looking at just the monotherapy for safety, no problems, no adverse events.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: And then they used it topically only, and they showed improvement across the board with skin.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: All skin parameters.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah, skin parameters.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: So my passion is what we call an integrated skincare.
- 11:42SPEAKER_01: So you do a procedure and you do a product, and one plus one is three.
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: So the procedure is giving you efficacy, um, and then the product is giving you more than you would with just the procedure alone.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: And that that was a real aha moment with the C.
- 11:58SPEAKER_01: Rulex study.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: It was.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: Because I think a lot of us were like, well, the products are helpful, but they're not really improving the skin.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: But that's really not true.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: When you just did the laser, when you added the laser plus the right product, you got an increased um result from this.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: And so we always stress, and at your great meeting, Patty, that having the right skin care is so important.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: So in our study, we did a full face, Erbium, or CO2.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: We got to pick based and we did all skin types, and that was really important.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: You know, as the world is changing, and we have and I'm in Miami, we have a lot of skin of color.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: So we had all skin types represented.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: So based on the skin type, we chose the a blade of laser.
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: So this is the big kahuna.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: And then on one side, and I was blinded, we did the regen six product, and on one side there was the uh base.
- 12:49SPEAKER_01: So that's a the best study you can do because you took out the activists and just used the the the base of the product.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: Okay, so it was the vehicle, was the control.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: The vehicle was the control.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: And then we had the poor patients uh come in um and we took pictures for seven days, and we did biopsies um pre-ricular in a in a subset of patients, and we watched both the healing and the efficacy, and what it showed was unequivocally that the region six helped improve healing times and quality of the skin far and above what laser alone and vehicle did.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Did you look at any post-laser uh complications, uh erythema, um PIH?
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we had um no adverse events that we think were traced to the actual product.
- 13:40SPEAKER_01: It's always hard to fare it out.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: But we had the ush for the laser.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: You know, the you know, we had some prolonged erythema, we had we didn't have any infections.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: Um we had some PIH in a couple of patients, but but pretty boring, but great results.
- 13:56SPEAKER_01: And you could see um which side you've been trying to do it.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, much like the see fruit like one side was healing faster than the other.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: Now you're blinded, but you're not blinded because you're because you're looking.
- 14:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you suspect, and the patients loved this product.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, really?
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Honestly, one of the first times when they still come in my office, because you know you always do a study pretty far in advance to you know, it was last year, they're like, when is that product coming?
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, how long did they use it post procedure?
- 14:24SPEAKER_01: Um, they used it out to three months.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Out to three months, okay.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's amazing.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: So this is getting ready to launch, super exciting.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a great product.
- 14:37SPEAKER_02: That that story's unbelievable how they developed this.
- 14:39SPEAKER_02: I was not aware of that.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: No, and I, you know, honestly, I wasn't until uh towards the end, but it really makes sense that we're now using real science to come up with the formulation and then more science to validate that it works.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: And I I think this one's this one's special, though.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: I'm very so I would that my next question was you have tested a lot of post-procedure products.
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: How does this compare to others?
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: Like you sound super excited about this one.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: I am very excited about this one.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: You know, it's always hard for me to veer away from uh vitamin C fruit because I just feel like that's such a hero product.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: The science is revolutionary.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: Agree.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: This this will be my post-procedure go-to.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: Well, if it's good enough for Joe Weibel, it's good enough for me and any everybody else.
- 15:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:26SPEAKER_02: That is a great endorsement.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: Well, so just to kind of wrap things up, what what do you see on the horizon?
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Like, I I think you really put the integrated skincare, you and Roy, and I I've presented both of your data on the podium many times.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: You sort of started the integrative skincare revolution, where we really did start changing the well, I mean, changing the way we viewed skincare.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: We knew it was important, but what were you using?
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: Petrolotum and you know, back in the day, aquifore.
- 15:53SPEAKER_02: And now we're using things like this, which have six major incredible ingredients in them that barrier repair, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, um, mitigate pigmentation, help build the extracellular matrix, on and on and on.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: But so what do you think about the future?
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, does this kind of change the paradigm of the way we treat our laser patients?
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: I think it very much does.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: And, you know, I was having this conversation with a patient today.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: I'm like, we have never had better skin health.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: Um, I, you know, we now know that the you know, from Dr.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Avram and from, you know, Dr.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: Bitter, when you do lasers, it prevents skin cancer and it definitely prevents aging.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: And you have to have an amazing armamentarium of products because you might do a procedure two or three times a year, but you're doing your products every day.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: So I do think that integrating the the best procedures with the best products has really prevented aging.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: You know, we've really gone into a totally different world where, you know, it used to be that when, you know, 75-year-olds would come in and they'd never did anything and boom, we'd hit them with a hard laser and they'd look younger.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: But now we get 20-year-olds and you know, our 65-year-olds don't have any wrinkles, and and we're, you know, many of my patients have never even had any surgery.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: And so we have amazing tools to keep the skin safe and healthy and beautiful.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:18SPEAKER_02: We're really promoting prevention as well.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: It's it's a new world, and and the amount of science, you know, says let the science lead us.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: We are definitely leading on with the devices.
- 17:29SPEAKER_01: I mean, we we science our scientific studies on the devices, we're doing lots of genetic analysis there, and then we have the best products.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, I I really mean it.
- 17:38SPEAKER_01: Your meeting and Ted's meeting has really brought the skincare science much higher.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: And and I think dermatologists and plastic surgeons, we've all been a lot more um analytical of what's going on the face, the safety of it, the um, and the efficacy.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's one of the reasons we started the summit.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: We just thought it was so important to bring forward the science.
- 17:58SPEAKER_02: And then when you talk about the science that was used to formulate this product and then the way that they tested it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: And, you know, we all have a lot of respect for skin physicals for really probably being the leading company that did that early, very early on.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Many are doing it now, but it has become the standard.
- 18:16SPEAKER_02: So if you want the dermatologist to use your products and recommend your products, you better show up in our office with some studies, or it's not gonna, it's not gonna work well for you.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: I'm so glad to hear this.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: This is a great episode.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: I'm so grateful for your time.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: I know you're super busy.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: You got a house full of kids to get home to.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: So thank you so much for spending this time with Skincare Confidential.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: We appreciate it, Jill.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: And we'll see you in Austin at the Science of Skincare Summit in September.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Perfect.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Thanks, Patty.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Have a great night.
