- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here and it's the start of a new
- 0:14week. It's Monday, it's the 3rd of
- 0:16November, and it's good to have your company as we continue on
- 0:20this journey through the book of James.
- 0:23This week we are going to finish off James.
- 0:25It's only another three chapters.
- 0:27It's a tiny little epistle. And then we're going to move on
- 0:29to Paul's letter to the the Thessalonians.
- 0:31Oh, so much goodness to come this week and in the weeks
- 0:36coming up as we read through a number of epistles and then dive
- 0:39into Daniel and then start reading through the Gospel of
- 0:42Luke just in time for Christmas. Oh, I can't wait.
- 0:47But I don't need to wait because the goodness has already started
- 0:50in the book of James. And you will remember that this
- 0:53is James, the leader of the early church, writing to
- 0:57encourage and instruct the the Christians that were spread all
- 1:00around the place then, and many of them suffering persecution at
- 1:04the hands of those amongst whom they lived.
- 1:07So without further ado, let us continue reading through James
- 1:12Chapter 3. Dear brothers and sisters, not
- 1:25many of you should become teachers in the Church, for we
- 1:28who teach will be judged more strictly.
- 1:31Indeed, we all make mistakes. For if we could control our
- 1:35tongues, we would be perfect, and could also control ourselves
- 1:39in every other way. We can make a large horse go
- 1:43wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth, and a
- 1:47small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses
- 1:51to go, even though the winds are strong.
- 1:54In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand
- 1:59speeches, but a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.
- 2:04And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of
- 2:08fire. It is a whole world of
- 2:11wickedness, corrupting your entire body.
- 2:14It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by
- 2:18hell itself. People can tame all kinds of
- 2:22animals, birds, reptiles and fish, but no one can tame the
- 2:26tongue. It is restless and evil, full of
- 2:30deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord
- 2:33and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made
- 2:37in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come
- 2:41pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters,
- 2:45this is not right. Does a spring of water bubble
- 2:49out both freshwater and bitter water?
- 2:52Does a fig tree produce olives or a Grapevine produce figs?
- 2:56No, and you can't draw freshwater from a salty spring.
- 3:02If you are wise and understand God's ways, prove it by living
- 3:06an honourable life, doing good works with the humility that
- 3:10comes from wisdom. But if you are bitterly jealous
- 3:14and there is selfish ambition in your heart, don't cover up the
- 3:17truth with boasting and lying, for jealousy and selfishness are
- 3:22not God's kind of wisdom. Such things are earthly,
- 3:26unspiritual, and demonic. For wherever there is jealousy
- 3:31and selfish ambition, there you will find disorder and evil of
- 3:36every kind. But the wisdom from above is
- 3:39first of all pure. It is also peace, loving, gentle
- 3:44at all times and willing to yield to others.
- 3:49It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds.
- 3:52It shows no favouritism and is always sincere.
- 3:56And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and
- 4:01reap a harvest of righteousness. Jesus, you know full well the
- 4:16danger of the way that we speak, the danger of the tongue, as
- 4:21James writes in this letter. Yes, Lord, our sinful ways, they
- 4:28tempt us and drag us into speaking words that are unkind
- 4:32or cruel or hurtful or thoughtless or anything in
- 4:36between. But we want to be your Kingdom,
- 4:40people who spread your love and your mercy and your compassion
- 4:46so that people experience that sense of joy and inclusion and
- 4:50love. So as James ends off this
- 4:54chapter, I pray that you would do this work in us so that we
- 5:01would be peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield
- 5:07to others full of mercy. Lord, let that be our legacy.
- 5:13Let that be your legacy through us so that we can bring our
- 5:18world ever closer to the way that you want it to be.
- 5:22And thank you that even when we mess this up, you love us more
- 5:26than we can understand. So we bask in that love that you
- 5:30show us and we thank you for it. We love you and we praise you,
- 5:34and we pray all of this in your precious name, Jesus, Amen.
