- 0:32Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:35My name is Scott Switch.
- 0:36I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:37I'm so honored and privileged to have with me a CrossFit OG who has been to the games, I think, eight times?
- 0:45Yes.
- 0:46Yes.
- 0:46Eight times.
- 0:48You've competed for longer than that, and you just won the Legends 50 to 54-year-old division.
- 0:55I present you, Jen Dieter.
- 0:59Hey, how are you?
- 1:00Good.
- 1:01Did I get the last name right?
- 1:03Yeah.
- 1:03Dieter.
- 1:03That's perfect.
- 1:05Perfect.
- 1:06So, um, you've been around this space a very, very long time.
- 1:10You've seen, you've been through like all the iterations.
- 1:14Um, you've been to regionals, you've been to the games.
- 1:19What, what's the highlight of your career?
- 1:22Ooh, that's a tough question.
- 1:26Um,
- 1:27You know, I feel like it's hard to say like one specific highlight, you know, the first year I went to the games, it was like, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
- 1:35That was the highlight.
- 1:36And then the second time I made it, it was like, wow, this is so cool.
- 1:39I can't believe I made it back.
- 1:41And then we went to Madison and it was a whole new place, a whole new location.
- 1:44Like that was super cool.
- 1:47I mean, the thing that probably pops out is getting on the podium.
- 1:50So the year I've only been on the podium once, but that was certainly like, you know, finally kind of moment at the game.
- 2:00So that was that was pretty great, I would say.
- 2:02But there's just there's been a lot of just really great experiences and great moments.
- 2:05And even when performance or outcome hasn't been great.
- 2:10Amazing.
- 2:10There's always been some kind of positive experience that's that's come out of it, whether it was regionals or the games or legends or, you know, any water clues to any of the competitions along the way.
- 2:20So I guess it's hard to it's hard to say for sure a highlight.
- 2:24But if I had to pick one, I would say being on the podium would probably be a highlight.
- 2:30That's pretty obvious.
- 2:32But looking at your career, I have to ask you about this.
- 2:36You competed at regionals while you were probably technically a master's aged athlete.
- 2:43Well, back in the day, you know, master's didn't happen until 40.
- 2:47So these 35 year olds that think they're masters, you know, we didn't get to, we didn't get to call ourselves masters way back then.
- 2:54So that was, it happened.
- 2:55You know, I turned 40.
- 2:59And I was already doing CrossFit.
- 3:01So I didn't even start CrossFit until I was 38 years old.
- 3:05So that's the first time I even ever heard anything about CrossFit.
- 3:09And then, yes, I competed at regionals.
- 3:12I qualified for regionals as an individual twice.
- 3:15I believe I was 42 or 43, I think, in...
- 3:2316 and 17.
- 3:24So that would have put me 43 and 44, I guess, that I qualified as an individual for regionals.
- 3:31But I chose to go team those two years instead.
- 3:35So yeah, I was well into my 40s when I made it to regionals.
- 3:39So you were Jen Ryan before Jen Ryan.
- 3:43There you go.
- 3:44I'll take that.
- 3:48That's pretty awesome.
- 3:49And your team finished seventh the one year.
- 3:52Yes, I think we might have been tied for sixth, but we had a lower placing.
- 3:58It's like whoever has the higher finish gets the sixth place.
- 4:01So yeah, we technically missed the games by one spot, tied for sixth, and went up a seventh.
- 4:07But yeah, pretty close.
- 4:09We went for it big that year.
- 4:10That's why I didn't go individual.
- 4:12Yeah, pretty impressive.
- 4:14Thank you.
- 4:14So I've read in your bio that you're a mom of three.
- 4:18Correct, correct.
- 4:21And you're a full-time physical therapist.
- 4:23Yes.
- 4:24And do you own your own business?
- 4:28Yes, I do now.
- 4:29I have been a PT for 25 years and I was with a big corporation physical therapy company for 23 of those years, ran 11 offices, treated patients.
- 4:43My last five years with that company, I was inside a CrossFit gym.
- 4:46So that's where my clinic was.
- 4:48And then I left there about two years ago, started to kind of gradually start up my own thing and then also worked at a big sports med clinic
- 4:57here in Jacksonville, Florida, where I live.
- 5:00And then I just left that to just do full time my own business PT in June of this of 2023.
- 5:08Yeah, so it's like six months ago, roughly.
- 5:10So I've been doing that.
- 5:11So I coached some CrossFit, and then I see patients at two different locations.
- 5:17And I'm about to open my third.
- 5:19Oh, very cool.
- 5:20And it looked like on LinkedIn, and it's hard to tell everything, but that Dieter Dynamics, you not only do PT, but you do coaching in the same building.
- 5:32Yes.
- 5:33So I feel like the void that I'm trying to fill in the physical therapy and sports performance world is, you know, kind of a little bit of everything.
- 5:42So a lot of what I do is movement analysis and trying to help people move better, whether you want to call it physical therapy or.
- 5:52sports performance or personal training or any of those sort of things, I wind up seeing a lot of clients who have had injuries and maybe are afraid to move or they are CrossFit athletes and
- 6:03you know, they want to be able to get over an injury or prevent injury or improve their skill in some way, shape, or form.
- 6:10So I'm kind of doing a little bit of everything because I'm passionate about a little bit of everything, really, when it comes to helping people do whatever it is that they love.
- 6:21So whether it's volleyball or lacrosse or CrossFit or running or, you know, any of those sort of things.
- 6:27So I'll do some, you know, performance training, physical therapy, you
- 6:32all of that wellness you know, all in one.
- 6:36So, but yeah, so I, I do one of the locations is actually my garage gym.
- 6:42So people come to see me in my garage and I have a pretty nice setup there, physical therapy and you know, a bit of a cross CrossFit gym there.
- 6:52And then I'm in a CrossFit space called brazen CrossFit.
- 6:57That's you know, kind of in a different part of town as well.
- 7:00So yeah,
- 7:01i have some clients there and then i just um became a business partner with another crossfit gym in town we're kind of merging two gyms into one called first coast crossfit and i'll be uh in that space as well and i'm coaching there some and then also i'll be doing the physical therapy or you know performance training there as well that's really awesome that's how i hurt my back in 2017 and um the pt i used was out of our gym
- 7:32And it was really awesome to be able to be in a comfortable space.
- 7:38And then she used like all of the equipment from the gym to give me homework and to actually make me move in the gym itself.
- 7:49I thought it was brilliant.
- 7:50Yeah, it's really worked out well.
- 7:52And like I said, I was, even when I was working for the corporation, I was in a CrossFit gym for about five years.
- 7:58I can't, I mean, I probably maybe started that seven or eight years ago, something like that, I guess.
- 8:04So I'm very comfortable, you know, in that space and working, you know, in that field of not doing just traditional physical therapy exercises, but combining it into some of the big functional movement patterns as well.
- 8:17So this is going to veer off CrossFit for just a second.
- 8:20So I used to live in Tallahassee, Florida.
- 8:22Okay.
- 8:25My cousin, who is like a brother to me, was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida.
- 8:29Nice.
- 8:31So we used to go to the I-10 back and forth all the time.
- 8:35So I spent a ton of time in Jacksonville back in the day.
- 8:40Very cool.
- 8:40Small world.
- 8:42Yeah.
- 8:43And St.
- 8:44Augustine as well, which is where you got your master's degree.
- 8:46Yes.
- 8:47Yes.
- 8:47Yeah.
- 8:48University of St.
- 8:48Augustine.
- 8:49And now one of my kids goes to college down there.
- 8:51He plays lacrosse at Flagler.
- 8:54Yeah.
- 8:54Very cool.
- 8:55And so one of my highlights from there is, have you ever seen the fireworks on the 4th of July at St.
- 9:02Augustine?
- 9:03I have actually.
- 9:06That is one of the highlights of my life.
- 9:08Pretty incredible.
- 9:09Right over the water there, over the intercoastal.
- 9:11That's good stuff.
- 9:13It is right by the fort.
- 9:14So it kind of gives it that like,
- 9:17The only bad thing is after it's all over and you and a million other people are trying to leave downtown St.
- 9:23Augustine and it's not built for that.
- 9:26Stick around for a long time if you're going to go watch the fireworks down there.
- 9:32Just chill and relax for a while.
- 9:33That's right.
- 9:34Because you're not getting out.
- 9:37But yeah, we used to spend a lot of time there.
- 9:40And man, Jacksonville is a hustling, bustling place.
- 9:46That outer belt thing that is crazy.
- 9:49I'm so glad I don't live there anymore.
- 9:52Yeah, it's definitely growing a lot.
- 9:54I mean, everywhere is, right?
- 9:55People say that.
- 9:56But I mean, I've lived in Jacksonville 25 years now.
- 10:01Yeah, 25 years now.
- 10:03So a long time.
- 10:04I've certainly seen some things change over the years.
- 10:11It's been 24 years since I've been there.
- 10:14Okay.
- 10:15Okay.
- 10:16Well, so we overlapped one year.
- 10:20The crazy thing for me is that until when I was in Tallahassee in the late nineties, early two thousands, uh, Sean Woodland was doing local sports in Tallahassee at the exact same time.
- 10:31Right.
- 10:33Right.
- 10:33He was in Jacksonville for a while too.
- 10:35Yeah.
- 10:36So, uh, I, I got to know him as a sports anchor before I ever knew him as a CrossFit games announcer.
- 10:42Oh, that's cool.
- 10:44Yeah.
- 10:44He's he's talked about OG, right?
- 10:46Yeah.
- 10:47Yeah.
- 10:48That's awesome.
- 10:48So now let's get back to you.
- 10:52You have been so successful in the sport.
- 10:54What is your athletic background?
- 10:57I started off as a gymnast when I was younger.
- 10:59And I, well, I was like 11.
- 11:02So I started relatively late for a gymnast.
- 11:04You know, usually I start when they're like
- 11:05three.
- 11:07But so I did that until I was I competed in it until I was in 10th grade and I had a pretty hardcore coach.
- 11:16I actually just reconnected with her.
- 11:18She's 85 and she was in the Olympics four times.
- 11:23She's from Germany, like just hardcore.
- 11:25And we weren't we weren't known as being the most refined gymnastics club, but we were kind of powerhouses.
- 11:31So I think that developed a lot of strength and power for me early on.
- 11:35And then I competed through 10th grade.
- 11:37In ninth grade, I also started springboard diving.
- 11:40So my high school didn't have gymnastics or anything like that.
- 11:43So I started doing diving.
- 11:48And so I did that all through my four years of high school.
- 11:53I picked up softball my sophomore year and did that for three years of high school.
- 11:58And then I stopped doing gymnastics completely by my senior year.
- 12:01So that left me an extra second of time.
- 12:03So I picked up cross country and
- 12:05For those people who know me well, I'm a terrible runner.
- 12:09So it's hard to believe that I actually ran cross country for a year, but I did.
- 12:12And then I went on and I was a diver in college at University of Virginia.
- 12:18I dove all four years there.
- 12:20So that's my kind of history.
- 12:23It's always been a lot of body control, movement, flexibility, all that kind of stuff between gymnastics and diving being my two big sports.
- 12:31Yeah, I was a swimmer growing up.
- 12:32Oh, nice.
- 12:34And my senior year, our coach led us.
- 12:37There was a meet and she said, you can do whatever you want for this meet.
- 12:41And I said, I want to dive.
- 12:43She's like, you're joking.
- 12:44And I'm like, no, I want to dive.
- 12:47And so I dove in the meet, got disqualified, never got to finish.
- 12:52But I think the judges thought I was making a mockery of it.
- 12:56But I really wanted to do it, so...
- 12:59Well, it's good that you got a chance to.
- 13:01It was always fun to see swimmers come and try to dive.
- 13:04I mean, it's a little bit different, right, compared to the divers that go try to do a little bit of swimming.
- 13:10So good for you.
- 13:12Usually people are too scared to get up on a board and do anything.
- 13:14So good for you.
- 13:15Do you know what a crow hop is?
- 13:18Yes, I do, actually.
- 13:20That's what I got disqualified for.
- 13:27Right.
- 13:27I know I could do the dives.
- 13:28I just didn't know how to bounce on the board.
- 13:30Yeah.
- 13:31Correct.
- 13:32Yeah.
- 13:32They were being picky.
- 13:33They were being picky if they disqualified you for that.
- 13:36Yeah.
- 13:36I think it was, they thought I was making fun of the sport, but, but I could do the dives.
- 13:42Yeah.
- 13:43That's awesome.
- 13:45So, um, that's really cool.
- 13:47Cause you went, that's division one.
- 13:49Yeah.
- 13:50Division one.
- 13:51So, you know, I did it all four years in college.
- 13:53All four years.
- 13:54Yep.
- 13:55Sure did.
- 13:56So I, it was, I mean, I think being a athlete in college is, it certainly taught me a lot about discipline.
- 14:04We had 6am practices.
- 14:05I mean, I'm an early morning CrossFit person now.
- 14:09And I think it's probably because I did a lot of that, you know, for four years of college, getting up and having 6am practices is just sort of,
- 14:17And to feel good for me, you know, I mean, it doesn't feel good to wake up that early, but being done that early feels really good.
- 14:23So I think it taught me a lot about that.
- 14:26And then
- 14:28diving specifically taught me a lot about like the physical aspect body control and all that but certainly some visual imagery and really kind of it's such an individual sport kind of practicing within so when I got into weightlifting a few years back like specifically competing in Olympic lifting I felt myself like going back to all of these diving techniques like mental mental game kind of stuff diving techniques and
- 14:58It was like, wow, to really be like that focus on what your body is doing.
- 15:01And you get, you know, you're up on the stage at a weightlifting meet and you get like one chance.
- 15:06I mean, three altogether, but like, you know, you have a minute and then you got to go do what you're going to do.
- 15:12And so there's certainly a lot of like seeing the lift in my head and practicing it over and over.
- 15:17And yeah.
- 15:18I think that, you know, I'm a huge visual learner and I like to try to employ that on athletes or patients that I'm working with because I, you know, not everybody's like that, but the people that are really grasp that, you know, and it's, I think it's a powerful tool to have.
- 15:33So it's been fun in the CrossFit and weightlifting world to kind of come back into some of that, you know, centering, like really being in tune with what your body's doing.
- 15:48Because sometimes CrossFit is just like, go.
- 15:52So this is a weird question just kind of popped into my head.
- 15:56When I was swimming and the divers, we all hung out together, right?
- 16:00There was a lot of video review even back as old as I am.
- 16:04And I'm older than you.
- 16:06So there was video review, which made it natural when I got to a point in CrossFit where I could compete.
- 16:15like that became a natural thing for me to do.
- 16:18Is that something you do to this day or did you do that back then?
- 16:23We did back then.
- 16:24I mean, I remember my dad having the, you know, video camera that was up on his shoulder, you know, that sort of thing.
- 16:31And then my coach and I would review my dive and we would take a look at the angles and how to fix this, that, and the other thing, you know?
- 16:39And then certainly now, I mean,
- 16:41On a phone, I watch my own lifts all the time.
- 16:45I send my lifts or, you know, my whatever it is that I'm doing or working on in CrossFit to my coach.
- 16:52He reviews them that way.
- 16:53I work with my patients, whether it's I mean, even just like physical therapy exercises or like complicated exercises.
- 17:01movements like the snatch, I'll certainly, you know, I always ask permission before I start just videoing someone, but, but, you know, I'll video someone and then have them watch it back and say, do you see what I'm talking about here?
- 17:13Did you feel that with your body?
- 17:14Can you see that in your head?
- 17:16You know, and then that kind of ties into that whole visual imagery or visualization, I should say.
- 17:22So yes, for sure.
- 17:24All the time.
- 17:25Yeah.
- 17:26I didn't even think about that, but the PT I went to would video me doing the exercise she wanted me to do so I could see it and remember it when I got home.
- 17:35Right.
- 17:36Right.
- 17:36Exactly.
- 17:38It was just because where I swam, so I had private lessons for a while and they had an underwater window where they could video like your stroke from underneath.
- 17:50Mm-hmm.
- 17:51And that's where we do a lot of video review and stuff like that.
- 17:54And it just became natural and CrossFit for me.
- 17:56Yeah.
- 17:57I haven't thought about that underwater window in a long time, but we had that in my high school pool.
- 18:04And then, of course, in bigger facilities that I trained in and whatnot while I was in college.
- 18:09But we'd watch a lot of that of how someone was going into the water and with their hands and feet and all that kind of stuff we're doing too.
- 18:15So it's cool.
- 18:16Yeah.
- 18:18It was just a crazy time.
- 18:22Taking me back.
- 18:25When you were doing that, you said it taught you a lot.
- 18:29You have three kids, a full-time job, a business you're running, and you're a CrossFit Games athlete.
- 18:35Balance.
- 18:38As a college athlete...
- 18:42As a college athlete, you have to balance everything.
- 18:45Now, probably not this much.
- 18:49Now you're at the master class of that.
- 18:51Right.
- 18:53But did it teach you enough balance that when you got there, when you got to this point in life, you were more prepared?
- 19:01Yeah, I think so.
- 19:02I've always had a tendency to take on a lot, put a lot on my plate.
- 19:08You know, maybe as a weakness, I spread myself too thin.
- 19:11As a strength, I juggle a lot.
- 19:13Depends on how you want to spin it, right?
- 19:16But so certainly I think that that ability to...
- 19:21handle the responsibilities and the time management in college certainly helped me with taking on other endeavors in life.
- 19:31Even between the time that I graduated from college and when I started CrossFit, that was like 16 years or something like that.
- 19:38So I still stayed super busy.
- 19:40A lot of it was
- 19:41raising kids and having babies.
- 19:43And I mean, gosh, I taught childbirth classes for years back in the day when I was super in, you know, when I was in that phase of life myself, I was actually a cheerleader for the Jaguars for a year way back in the day.
- 19:57So I've always kind of grasped onto some different things over the course of my life and have stayed very busy.
- 20:04So I think that maybe, you know, that's helped to get me to what you call the master class now where I'm, you know, juggling.
- 20:13One of my friends called me a time bender recently, you know, trying to always get that extra couple seconds out of every minute.
- 20:19So it's pretty good.
- 20:22You are a professional juggler.
- 20:24Yeah.
- 20:24Juggling from all those things you mentioned.
- 20:26She's she's got it going on.
- 20:27I'm trying.
- 20:28That's right.
- 20:30Thanks.
- 20:31So I have to say, like, I take pride in my research.
- 20:33I try to research everybody before I interview them.
- 20:36And my job day job is actually used to be doing a ton of research.
- 20:40So I pride myself.
- 20:42I did not find Jacksonville Jaguar cheerleader.
- 20:45That was before digital pictures were a thing.
- 20:48So there's not a lot out there about that.
- 20:50And I don't usually lead with it.
- 20:52I'm not actually sure why I mentioned it right now, but I did.
- 20:55So there you go.
- 20:56But I think it did help me manage time because we had practiced every night or not every night.
- 21:02We had practices a lot.
- 21:03And it was, I think, like nine to 11 at night or I don't know, something ridiculous like that.
- 21:09Um, but it was just kind of one more thing that I decided to take on, even though I was working full time, I was married, but I didn't have kids yet.
- 21:17Um, so, and it was, I was already the physical therapist for the girls is kind of how I got involved with the team, the company that I worked for, we had the contract with the Jags.
- 21:26And so I was the PT for the cheerleaders for
- 21:31about a year or a year and a half.
- 21:33And then the coach and I had gotten to know each other and she was like, hey, can you still tumble?
- 21:38And this was back, so this was in 2000.
- 21:40This was back when the cheerleaders still used to tumble in the end zone.
- 21:43And I was like, yeah, I can still tumble.
- 21:45She's like, have you thought about trying out?
- 21:47I was like, nope.
- 21:49Sure haven't.
- 21:50And she's like, you should try out.
- 21:52And I never had done any cheerleading of any kind in my entire life.
- 21:57My high school didn't even have a football team.
- 21:59I grew up in like rural Connecticut.
- 22:01So no football team even.
- 22:03So I mean, I knew what the sport was from college, but didn't have a lot of experience and had never done any cheerleading.
- 22:09So I sucked when I started.
- 22:11Like I didn't know how to do, you know, five, six, seven, eight.
- 22:15I didn't know anything about dancing.
- 22:16So I had to do some pretty good practicing, but I did it for a year.
- 22:21And then at the end of the year, that was, that was a good experience.
- 22:25You know, check the boxes, got to go to Kuwait and Bahrain on a little USO tour for the troops, which was a really cool experience.
- 22:32And then, you know, went on to other things.
- 22:39That that's crazy.
- 22:40Yeah.
- 22:41Yeah.
- 22:41Corey says a first time trying out as a professional cheerleader makes the team.
- 22:46She basically human superhuman.
- 22:50Well, thanks.
- 22:50It was, I think they were all surprised because I was like their trainer, you know, and I went out there and did some back handsprings and side aerials and they were all like, wait, what?
- 22:59So, um, I had to, well, I had to surprise them a little bit.
- 23:03So maybe it was the wow factor, but yeah.
- 23:07like did all that early gymnastics just stick with you or did you still do stuff like that?
- 23:13Just messing around.
- 23:14I think it stuck with me.
- 23:16I have two younger sisters and I mean, they live in Oregon.
- 23:18I live in Florida.
- 23:19We live far away now and we have for 20 some years, but we were,
- 23:23always doing gymnastics of sorts of things, you know, and then even when I was in grad school for physical therapy, I picked up a little part-time job teaching gymnastics on the side.
- 23:37Um, I coach diving, you know, in the summers around college.
- 23:41So I just, it was part of my life to sort of always do those sorts of things.
- 23:45And, um, yeah,
- 23:48you know, part of my, even when I was having, you know, my kids were little and all that, I'd go to the gym and just do kind of normal, quick little workout sort of things.
- 23:57But I always started every workout with 10 pull-ups.
- 24:00You know, I just always stayed kind of,
- 24:03aware of body movement and i could still do a lot of stuff with my own body weight i just hadn't done a lot of lifting since college you know so that was that was certainly new for crossfit but um i mean i remember the first time i had to do a pistol and a workout i was at the crossfit gym you know and just they were talking about pistols and i was just in the middle of the gym and i just went ahead and did some pistols and people were like wait a second you can just like drop and do a pistol instead of holding on to something and you know again i've just had
- 24:30I've been fortunate in that I have some pretty good gymnastic skills.
- 24:34I mean, when you have been practicing going upside down and walking on your hands and doing back handsprings and all that for 30 years, it kind of sticks with you.
- 24:43So close to it.
- 24:47So, so you have a very big gap between college and when you first started CrossFit.
- 24:56Were you doing other types of fitness in that time?
- 25:00Because it didn't take you long from the time you started CrossFit.
- 25:04So you were regionals games quality.
- 25:08Yes.
- 25:09So I would say I dabbled.
- 25:13I never really found anything that stuck or that I loved until I found CrossFit.
- 25:19So I think I ran one five K and,
- 25:23in all of those years.
- 25:25I tried P90X, if you remember that, back in the day.
- 25:28I think you're supposed to do 90 days.
- 25:30It probably took me 300 days to get through all of them.
- 25:33I never got through all of them, actually.
- 25:36So I did a little bit of that.
- 25:37One of my neighbors I'm still really good friends with, she and I would go for a jog, find something in the morning, because we both had to wake up early, and we both would just be praying that the other person would cancel.
- 25:47You know, cause I didn't really love it.
- 25:49And then with my patients in the PT clinic, I would try to sort of demonstrate at least a couple reps of every exercise throughout the day to just sort of stay somewhat active.
- 25:59So I ran some, I, you know, did a little bit around the house, like working out kind of stuff.
- 26:08But nothing, nothing really extreme.
- 26:11And then I, I can actually remember at one point, I think it was after my third child was born.
- 26:17He was little.
- 26:17I think he was five when I started CrossFit.
- 26:20So it was somewhere before that.
- 26:22And I remember looking in the mirror and being like, I don't think I've intentionally sweat in like two years.
- 26:29Like there was definitely a period where I just didn't really do anything other than life.
- 26:35You know, wake up, kids, work, come home, kids.
- 26:41And then my sister, who, like I said, lives in Oregon, she was like, you need to try CrossFit.
- 26:50And I was like, I'm not going to pay someone to tell me what to do for exercise.
- 26:55I tell people what to do all day long as a PT.
- 26:57Like, no, I'm not doing that.
- 26:59I know what to do.
- 27:00I'm just not doing it.
- 27:01That was my excuse.
- 27:03And then she found a gym that was two miles from my house, remotely as she's on the other side of the country.
- 27:11She's like, just go try it.
- 27:13There was like a
- 27:14um group on or something like that to start she's like come on just go try it and i was like fine i'll do it for one month but i'm just gonna write down the workouts and then i'm just gonna do them on my own after that i'm not gonna like go to a place that would be silly why would i ever do that and so
- 27:30I remember my third workout vaguely.
- 27:33And I remember I was doing burpees and box jumps.
- 27:37And I think I was probably bleeding, crying, snotting, everything you could possibly imagine and thinking, I'm never going to stop doing this.
- 27:46I'll keep doing this forever.
- 27:47And that was 12 years ago.
- 27:50So, so awesome.
- 27:52It's funny when I started CrossFit, the same thing, like, and I started at 500 pounds.
- 27:58Oh man.
- 27:59Like when I, when I started, it was, it was a rough first couple of days.
- 28:05And I thought the same thing.
- 28:06I was going to the Y and I was, and I dabbled in CrossFit and I was like, I'll just write down some of these workouts and I'll just do them again at the Y.
- 28:16Then I went from like two days a week to three days a week to four days a week to unlimited to all the extra stuff and just got the bug like everybody else.
- 28:31Yep.
- 28:32Pretty amazing.
- 28:36So you find all this stuff.
- 28:37When did you realize like, I'm pretty good?
- 28:44Or was it like cheerleading?
- 28:45When I was at Legends a couple weeks ago?
- 28:47No.
- 28:47When you were at Legends.
- 28:51Great.
- 28:54So...
- 28:57I joined the CrossFit gym right around Christmas.
- 29:01And so then the open started like in that February, you know, right afterwards.
- 29:04So I was two months in and that year I didn't even, I was out of town for one of the weeks that opened.
- 29:09So I didn't even complete the open.
- 29:10I really didn't get it.
- 29:11You know, it was like, oh, I'll do the workouts, whatever.
- 29:14And so then the next year I'd been in CrossFit for about a year.
- 29:17And I think we were midway through the open.
- 29:19It was five weeks then.
- 29:22And someone from my gym came up to me and was like, hey, would you consider going to West Palm Beach for a CrossFit competition?
- 29:30I was like, there's competitions?
- 29:32What are you talking about?
- 29:35And they were like, I think we might have qualified a team for regionals.
- 29:38I was like, I mean, I guess.
- 29:41I don't know.
- 29:41And I...
- 29:43sort of you know nodded and went along and then we made a team to regionals so it's back when it was three girls and three guys and the three the two girls that were um you know with me they were 12 to 15 years younger than me or something like that and we all had to have matching outfits so they were like go to lululemon and go get these hot pink booty shorts and i was like
- 30:08what?
- 30:09So I go into the store and I try on these hot pink booty shorts and I'm like, no, I'm a mom.
- 30:14I can't wear that.
- 30:15There's just no way.
- 30:16And so I left and I didn't buy them.
- 30:17I was like, I can't, you guys, I can't do it.
- 30:23And then they like walked me back to the store and we went in and now, you know,
- 30:28The hot pink booty shorts live on.
- 30:30And now I don't want to work out in anything but, you know, booty shorts, I guess.
- 30:35But so, yeah, so and so we're going into West Palm.
- 30:40My first year regionals must have been 2013.
- 30:44And we're walking in there and I'm thinking to myself, okay, when's the last time I felt this kind of like nervous butterfly?
- 30:52And I counted it back and I was like, hey guys, the last time I competed in anything was 19 years ago.
- 30:59How about that?
- 31:01So it had been 19 years between any kind of like event that I had entered into other than I did one corporate 5k in that space between then.
- 31:12So yeah, it was a pretty long time with not doing a whole heck of a lot.
- 31:16So it was pretty exciting.
- 31:18And I think, you know, as far as like, when did I realize I was good?
- 31:21I, at that point I still was sort of like, okay, I'm just along for the ride, whatever.
- 31:26And then, um,
- 31:27I realized that I could do a little more and get a little better.
- 31:31And that there was this thing called the CrossFit Games and that they take masters athletes.
- 31:38And I was turning 40.
- 31:41And so I decided like, oh, this would be kind of cool.
- 31:45And then when I turned 40 that year, I finished
- 31:4920 something i didn't make it they took 20 that year and i i don't remember 23rd 24th somewhere in that um neighborhood i don't remember and then
- 32:00that kind of lit a little bit of a fire.
- 32:02I remember it was my son's birthday actually.
- 32:05And I'm like under the table, we're out to dinner and I'm under the table, like looking at my phone and I say I'm in 19th place.
- 32:10Then I saw I was in 20th place and then 21st place.
- 32:14And you know, it was like, Oh, I didn't realize how much I wanted it.
- 32:16And we're singing happy birthday and I'm all sad.
- 32:19And so, and then I was like, okay, it's time for me to put in a little bit more work.
- 32:24And then I was able to make it the next year.
- 32:29And that was 2015.
- 32:29Yes.
- 32:29And then you went on what I would call a Scott Pancheck run.
- 32:39Like six years, six years of just, just outside the podium.
- 32:45Yeah.
- 32:46Yeah.
- 32:48And then in that seventh year, you finally land on the podium.
- 32:52Yes.
- 32:53And you, you said at the top of the show, that was a highlight of your career.
- 32:59Did it mean more because it took the seven years to get there?
- 33:04I think so.
- 33:04I mean, one year when it was a four-day games event, because some years it was three days, some years it was four.
- 33:13But one day when it was a four-day event, I was in first place for two days.
- 33:19And I don't remember the event that dropped me.
- 33:22This was probably 2018 or 19.
- 33:26And then I got to the last event and it was like a double scored thing.
- 33:33We did Diane.
- 33:35And then we had to, that was a scored event.
- 33:39No.
- 33:39No.
- 33:42Was it Diane?
- 33:43Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:43It was Diane.
- 33:46And then we had a one minute rest after we finished it.
- 33:49And then we had to do four rope climbs and then 30 thrusters at 80 pounds.
- 33:55So it was like, okay, I had just dropped out of the podium.
- 33:58Let's say I was in like fourth or something.
- 34:00And it was like, there's a really good chance I could get back on the podium.
- 34:04And I went all out.
- 34:05I was actually just talking with like Pamela Gagnon and Ida Keplinger and
- 34:10about this over the summer because it was like the two of them were in it.
- 34:14I was in it.
- 34:15Um, there was several of us.
- 34:18We all were pretty like high gymnast kind of people.
- 34:22So we're flying through these handstand pushups.
- 34:26Um, and the deadlifts, we were just moving the bar fast.
- 34:28So we all basically PR or Diane, you know, we're going crazy through this thing.
- 34:32I'm dead.
- 34:33And then I just bonked.
- 34:35I, on the fourth rope climb, I'm just holding on for dear life, looking at the rope, like I'm going to fall.
- 34:40I'm going to die, you know, kind of thing.
- 34:42And then I got to the thrusters and no joke failed 80 pound thrusters.
- 34:46Like my max thrusters, 170, 171, and I'm failing 80 pound thrusters out there.
- 34:51I just, it was crazy.
- 34:52It was just done.
- 34:52I think I got last place.
- 34:53So that year was like my closest to the podium.
- 34:56But I felt that like that taste of being up there and then that significant drop.
- 35:02And I don't know if I finished fifth or sixth that year.
- 35:04I had a bunch of fifth and sixth finishes in there.
- 35:07But but yeah, so I think for sure it was just, you know, it took me long enough to get on the podium.
- 35:13So it felt a little bit better once I got there, perhaps.
- 35:19And even that year that I got on the podium, it was such a tight race.
- 35:22I was five pounds, five pounds, five points out of a second and 10 points out of first, if I remember correctly.
- 35:29So it was, it was a heck of a year.
- 35:34So in 2020, would you have made it to the games?
- 35:39Yes.
- 35:40And then they can't qualified second that year.
- 35:43Okay.
- 35:44And then 2023 is the only, like from 2015 to 2022 every year.
- 35:46Last year would have been your last year in 45 to 49.
- 35:48Correct.
- 35:49And you finished just outside the top 20.
- 35:50Yeah.
- 35:50Yeah.
- 36:02it wasn't a strong year for me i i debated you know i've been doing this a long time so i kind of debated taking a year off and you know several people i talked to my sister again she's like my biggest crossfit you know whatever um but so she was like you know a lot of people take off that end of the age group and then they start back up when they age up i was like i don't know i feel like if i
- 36:24stop maybe I'll never start back up again I don't want to just like not and then I tore my hamstring in the open during the handstand push-ups of all things coming off the wall my leg went you know I had one leg up one leg down and felt a zipper kind of go right down my butt and my hammy
- 36:49Um, that was the heavy snatch workout.
- 36:51Like the snatches went up.
- 36:52And so then I got to the final bar and just barely lift the bar off the ground and was like, Oh no, no, no, that's not happening.
- 36:59Um, and so then I had four weeks to recover before quarters and yeah,
- 37:04It just it wasn't there.
- 37:06And then I really didn't think I was going to even be able to do anything well in quarterfinals.
- 37:12But the first I was in first place after the first two days, because, again, the workouts were very well suited for me, like pretty heavy gymnastics kind of stuff.
- 37:22And then I think the last workout was rowing and thrusters.
- 37:26And so I hadn't been on a rower since I had hurt my hamstring.
- 37:28So then I tanked on that.
- 37:30And then semifinals, forget it.
- 37:32I just, you know, I couldn't get back in shape enough with my hammy before that came along.
- 37:38So I still gave it my best effort, but it just, you know, it wasn't there.
- 37:42So I'm using the hamstring as an excuse.
- 37:44How about that?
- 37:47So that brings up an interesting point.
- 37:48You're a physical therapist.
- 37:51If anyone should know their body, it would be a physical therapist.
- 37:56You tear your hamstring.
- 37:59You have your physical therapist on one shoulder, your athlete on the other shoulder.
- 38:04Who wins the battle?
- 38:06That's a really tough question.
- 38:08Um,
- 38:11Yeah.
- 38:12I mean, I've done some stupid things with my stupid athlete hat on.
- 38:16Right.
- 38:16And I've probably been too conservative with my physical therapist hat on too.
- 38:20So I would say it's a, it's a balance.
- 38:24I mean, I have had some injuries, especially in the last year.
- 38:28So I tore that hamstring in a
- 38:35February, March, no, probably March was the open, right?
- 38:39And then I tore my other hamstring in June.
- 38:45So when I didn't make it to the CrossFit Games, I was privileged to be invited by CrossFit to go be the guinea pig to test the workouts.
- 38:55So I went and tested the CrossFit workouts at the end of June.
- 38:59but the games workouts at the end of June this past summer.
- 39:02And on one of the events, I tore a ligament in my shoulder and tore my other hamstring.
- 39:09That's what happens when you don't stay super fit, right?
- 39:11I was kind of like, eh, I'm 49.
- 39:14I'm not going to work that hard.
- 39:15I'm not going to put CrossFit as a priority.
- 39:17Bang, tear my first hamstring.
- 39:19Eh, I didn't make it to the games.
- 39:20What's the big deal?
- 39:21Who cares?
- 39:22Hey, Jen, can you come test all the workouts for CrossFit?
- 39:25Yeah, of course.
- 39:26I'll be games ready.
- 39:27No problem, you know?
- 39:28And it was a great experience.
- 39:30I don't hold anything against.
- 39:31I mean, injuries happen.
- 39:32Like, no big deal.
- 39:34But I, in that situation, pushed hard.
- 39:37harder than i had in several months probably and um you know my body went yeah no this is not something that you can do right now so i've been coming back from that for the last six months um so i've interviewed a few pts uh amanda bart art um mathilde garness uh elisa fuliano i've asked them all that same question
- 40:04they all say they don't trust their PTs shoulder because the athlete always wants to win.
- 40:10Yeah.
- 40:12Yeah.
- 40:13I mean, I would say there's, we do this sport and compete for a reason.
- 40:19We all have whatever screw is loose that makes us push that hard.
- 40:23Right.
- 40:24So, um, yeah,
- 40:26so yeah i mean i think that there's certainly that time i mean i i try to be as smart as i can don't get me wrong like i try to not put myself into situations and i feel like that has helped me with longevity in the sport is that i kind of sometimes know when to back off um the little warning signs and then
- 40:47for the most part know how to try to, you know, help my body heal.
- 40:51And I just met with a good friend of mine who's a PT and a CrossFitter.
- 40:54And we did a nice little trade to work on each other for the things that we need, you know, fixing on our own bodies essentially and vowed to one another that we're going to do it more regularly.
- 41:04So I try, but I still, I still have my stupid athlete hat on a lot.
- 41:11Yeah.
- 41:11Amanda told me she actually hired a PT because she couldn't trust herself.
- 41:15Right.
- 41:16Right.
- 41:17Yeah.
- 41:17No, it's definitely helps the same reason I have a coach.
- 41:20Right.
- 41:20I don't want to I don't want to decide what's best for me because I hate cardio.
- 41:26Right.
- 41:26I hate monostructural stuff.
- 41:28So would I make myself do it?
- 41:29Maybe.
- 41:30Yes.
- 41:30But it's all it's a lot better to, you know, have that accountability, whether it's PT or coaching or any of that kind of thing.
- 41:39So there's a couple comments here.
- 41:41Jeffrey Birchfield said, doctor, heal thyself.
- 41:44And then Corey Leonard said, torn hamstring only hurts when you're awake.
- 41:49Exactly.
- 41:52He also adds, typical athlete response only hurts when I use it.
- 41:55Right.
- 41:55Yeah.
- 41:56When I'm not using it, it's fine.
- 41:58What's the big deal?
- 41:59No biggie.
- 42:01Right.
- 42:01So let's dive into legends a little bit.
- 42:07How excited were you to see a swim event to start off the event in such a cool pool?
- 42:15Yeah, that was awesome.
- 42:17I was very excited.
- 42:18I mean, I, you know, my background's diving, but I also swam in high school.
- 42:21And then every once in a while, they take us divers in college and throw me on a relay.
- 42:25Like, I had a decent freestyle.
- 42:27I, you know, I was okay.
- 42:29So, yeah.
- 42:31I don't train swimming much because of all the monostructural cardio that I was just saying that I don't like.
- 42:38Swimming is my best one.
- 42:39So I do okay when any kind of swimming event comes up.
- 42:45So I was happy about that.
- 42:46Because of my shoulder, I didn't really know what I would be able to do.
- 42:49I got in the pool the Sunday before Legends and tested it out.
- 42:53It hurt a little bit, but
- 42:55I was like, okay, well, we'll go for it.
- 42:57It should be fine.
- 42:57I didn't think it was going to like hurt anything per se.
- 43:01So I was thrilled to be able to do a swimming event for the cardio as opposed to running, rowing, biking or skiing.
- 43:09Did you catch any of the other dives or entries into the pool?
- 43:12A few.
- 43:14A few.
- 43:17I would say many of those athletes need some diving help.
- 43:23I think I had one kind of ugly one myself at the very end when I was tired.
- 43:28So I shouldn't talk too much.
- 43:29I don't think all mine were beautiful.
- 43:33Well, being from a swimming background, I'm out there like it's really hard for me to watch sometimes.
- 43:40And when you're a good swimmer, it is so apparent in CrossFit.
- 43:44Right.
- 43:46So you start off the weekend with a second place.
- 43:50You go into the lift.
- 43:52I'm sure your shoulder was a big fear going into that.
- 43:56Yeah.
- 43:57So, I mean, lifting is...
- 44:00something that i really love to do i mentioned the olympic lifting um earlier but in the previous so twice that i've been to the games we've had a one rep max snatch and i've won both times um so it's something that i really love to do i compete in olympic lifting i've got a couple world records in my age group so i know i can hold my own with all these ladies
- 44:23And, um, but I had only snatched up to about 115 pounds the week before legends, just because of my shoulder, just like the 10 days before legends was time for me to start testing things.
- 44:35So I was just, just kind of testing things going into it.
- 44:38Um, and I think I had jerked maybe one 25 or one 35 or something like that.
- 44:44And, um, I was warming up and my coach had me hit, I think maybe I had one 25 in the warmup.
- 44:49And then, uh, went out there, opened with one 25, missed it behind me.
- 44:53And I was like, ah, missed it behind me.
- 44:55Sounds like a make.
- 44:56So I went up to one 45 and, um, and then hit that.
- 45:00And then we jumped up again.
- 45:01Like I jumped to one 60 after that.
- 45:04Um, which, you know,
- 45:10I mean, my whole thing at legends this year was like, I don't, my shoulders probably like 75%.
- 45:15I have a new coach.
- 45:17We're like working together in an event for the first time.
- 45:20I don't know, you know, how good I am.
- 45:22My training's been a little bit different.
- 45:24So it was sort of just testing it out.
- 45:26And so then I, you know, jumped to one 60 and it was sort of one of those, like, let's just see what heavyweight feels like.
- 45:32I've got adrenaline, you know, all that kind of stuff.
- 45:33And
- 45:34Um, my coach and I talked about it afterwards, um, Todd wise.
- 45:37And he was like, I just wanted you to feel heavy weight with adrenaline and like, just be out there and have some confidence in your shoulder.
- 45:42It's not like we're trying to win.
- 45:43So I was just there for the experience, you know?
- 45:47Um, so, but it worked out.
- 45:48Okay.
- 45:51Um, Corey Leonard says, Oh, I'm using that from now on missed it behind me.
- 45:56That's a make I'm going up.
- 45:58Oh, a hundred percent, Corey.
- 45:59I can't tell you how many times I've used, I've used that for real.
- 46:02Yeah.
- 46:03If I miss it behind me, that's a make in my head for sure.
- 46:07So what I want to talk about is how you breezed over the fact that you hold world records in Olympic lifting in your age group.
- 46:15Yes.
- 46:17Right by that.
- 46:18We kept moving.
- 46:19I wanted to stop.
- 46:21So I know there was a point in your career you decided, hey, I want to try this.
- 46:26And I think you went overseas, right, to compete?
- 46:28I did.
- 46:29I went to Barcelona in 2018.
- 46:32That's where the world championships were that year.
- 46:36So I have a good friend, Mike Romero, and he was like, hey, did you know you could set some world records in lifting?
- 46:43I was like, what are you talking about?
- 46:45Like, what are you talking about?
- 46:46And he was like, yeah, like you're snatched, you're cleaning jerks, like you're right there.
- 46:50I was like, okay, well, what do I need to do for that?
- 46:53So I went into a little local meet and then that qualified me for a bigger meet.
- 46:58And then I qualified for the world championships, went over to Barcelona
- 47:03And, uh, I mean, it was a fantastic experience and my numbers were really good.
- 47:08So I, I think I opened as the last person and I followed myself for all three lifts for the snatch for sure.
- 47:17And I don't remember the clean and jerk exactly, but I was able to get, um, yeah, world records for snatch, clean and jerk and total.
- 47:24And I still have the world record for the snatch and 45 to 49.
- 47:27Somebody beat my, um,
- 47:31clean and jerk and total.
- 47:33So my last year in 49, um, the world championships was in Orlando in December, 2011.
- 47:42And I tore my other hamstring.
- 47:48I forgot about that.
- 47:51In the games in 2022 on day two, I was sprinting.
- 47:57We had the event where we had to sprint and jump over the log and do a bunch of other stuff.
- 48:02And I popped my hamstring in that.
- 48:05So anyway, that whole fall wasn't like a great training fall for me.
- 48:09And the world champs was in December.
- 48:11I was like, well, let me just go for it and see if...
- 48:14I can take a win.
- 48:15And if I can reset the world record, great.
- 48:17But I tied it.
- 48:18So technically, I didn't re-get the world record on that one.
- 48:23But I still have the snatch.
- 48:24And then this year, I didn't make it to the games.
- 48:27And I had signed myself up for world championships for 2023 because it was my first year as a 50-year-old.
- 48:34Because USAW says, whatever age you're turning that year, that's your age.
- 48:38So I was already 50 in their eyes.
- 48:40So I was like, well, if I don't make it to the games,
- 48:43I got to feed my ego a little bit.
- 48:45So I'll go to world championships and see if I can set some new world records as a 50-year-old.
- 48:50So I didn't make it to the games.
- 48:55And then I think three weeks later, I had this world championship event.
- 48:59So I started training for that.
- 49:00That's when I started working with Todd.
- 49:03And we just hit it hard with some Olympic lifting for two and a half weeks, I think I had, or something like that.
- 49:09and then was able to go set the records and win the world championship.
- 49:14No, no, no, it wasn't the world.
- 49:16It was Pan Ams.
- 49:16It was the Pan American Games.
- 49:19So set the world record there though.
- 49:22And then right before I left for that is when I got the call from,
- 49:26CrossFit HQ, like, Hey, you want to come test all the workouts?
- 49:29So then I turned to my coach and I was like, so you know how I haven't done any CrossFit in three weeks.
- 49:33You think you can get me CrossFit games ready in another three weeks.
- 49:36So, you know, we've, we've, uh, we kind of started off in a very funny situation there, but it's been good.
- 49:43Well, that's awesome.
- 49:44Uh, and so you love, but you love being able to do both.
- 49:48I do.
- 49:49I
- 49:51I do.
- 49:52And like I said, the the Olympic lifting, it's like so centered.
- 49:56It's so different from CrossFit.
- 50:00And there's something and I don't know if it's because of my experience with, you know, individual sports like diving or what, but it it feeds me somehow.
- 50:08I really enjoy that, that that stress or that sense of butterflies.
- 50:16more than I expected to.
- 50:18I mean, yeah, I, I do love it.
- 50:20Uh, but I don't think I would want to do just Olympic lifting.
- 50:23I, I love CrossFit more if I had to pick one, but I, I love being able to do both.
- 50:30Yeah.
- 50:30I, um, there's a lot in an individual sport.
- 50:33There's a lot into the mindset of everything.
- 50:37And, um, and some in my swimming career, some days I had it and some days I didn't like, and it was a struggle on the days you don't,
- 50:46Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 50:48You know, one of the things that I still use when I was in diving, we met with a guy named Bob Rotella.
- 50:57He's a big sports site guy in the golf world is kind of where he's excelled.
- 51:02And he met with I don't remember what the connection was, but he knew somebody at UVA.
- 51:05And so he met with the diving team.
- 51:08And he gave us some strategies that I still use.
- 51:10And one of them is, you know, closing your eyes or going to a place, you know, whatever, and seeing the dive in your head and seeing it perfectly before you make your approach down the board.
- 51:21Um, and it sounds simple enough.
- 51:23Oh, I'm going to watch it in my head, see it perfectly and then go do it.
- 51:27Well, half the time I watch myself do it wrong in my head.
- 51:30Like what's, what's up with that?
- 51:33Why would I do that to myself?
- 51:35And it's the same thing with snatching and clean and jerking, you know, like I'll try to, okay, I'm going to see it perfectly, but I'll still like, sometimes I'll see my hips rise too much.
- 51:43Sometimes I'll see my arms, not, you know, my elbows not come through enough or my arms not punch out enough or whatever it is.
- 51:48Like,
- 51:49our brain tricks us into seeing these little faults sometimes.
- 51:52And I think that there's something about that mental
- 51:58acuity or that that amount of focus that it takes in order to be able to achieve that and when I'm in an Olympic lifting meet I often lose that focus a little bit during the clean and jerk because I'm so focused during the snatch it's just fatiguing right like to be that focus and then you get to the clean and jerk and the change so sometimes I lose it a little bit um by the end of the the meet to be honest that's one thing that's one area that I could improve upon so yeah
- 52:27So we're coming up on the hour, so I'm going to speed through some stuff.
- 52:32You start off with a second, fourth, third, and then you go on a run of first, second, second, first, first.
- 52:43Yeah.
- 52:44What kind of... And then you win by 69 points at the end of Legends.
- 52:51Legends is a premier Masters competition in the offseason.
- 52:56What kind of confidence does that give you going into game season in your first year in the 50-54?
- 53:03It's pretty good, I would say.
- 53:08I mean, I think, you know, I have struggled a little bit in the last couple years between injuries and whatnot.
- 53:15So going into the event, there was part of me, I think...
- 53:22I gained momentum and confidence as I went on.
- 53:26My training, because of the shoulder, I've been doing a lot of like bodybuilding, strength training,
- 53:32cardio work, but not a lot of real CrossFit.
- 53:35So I went in going like, I don't know if I really remember how to go that hard in the paint, you know, like, I don't, I haven't done like that kind of intensity in a long time.
- 53:43And then I did it a couple times.
- 53:46And then I think, you know, that just sort of lit the fire and gave me more confidence and, and the workouts were very well suited for me.
- 53:54Like, I'm not naive to the fact that
- 53:56if it had been different workouts that, you know, maybe it wouldn't have been my day or, you know, my four days or, or whatever.
- 54:03So I think that, you know, on any given day, it could have been a little bit different, but this certainly did help, um, moving forward.
- 54:10I'm like, okay, I, I'm not as far off base as I, I really didn't, I didn't think that, um, you know, I, I had it in me, I guess that sounds funny, but I'm, I feel really good about how I performed and how I kind of like remembered, um,
- 54:24how to go hard.
- 54:25And, um, yeah, it was just great.
- 54:28It was, it was a really good experience for me in all ways, shapes and form.
- 54:34Well, coming off the injuries to say that the week before you were testing and then to win, I mean, that's a, that's a huge leap from like just seeing where my, where I'm at to winning the damn competition.
- 54:49Like, wow.
- 54:51Yeah, I was shocked.
- 54:52And my shoulder didn't hurt at all.
- 54:53My hamstring didn't hurt.
- 54:54Like, I don't, I can't even explain it.
- 54:57Like just everything worked great.
- 55:00And, you know, thankfully I did the rehab and I, you know, followed my coach's advice and, you know, did the right kind of training for the six months through.
- 55:11And it really worked out.
- 55:13Gosh, I mean, it worked out great, huh?
- 55:16It really did.
- 55:18I'm going to skip completely over your rock tape.
- 55:21time i used to be a rock tape addict yeah when i was competing um but you said something in one of your bios um where you said i hope to continue in the sport indefinitely yes and so your vision is all the way to 65 plus and beyond
- 55:45Yeah, you know, I was talking to, so I'm part of the Master Shatter podcast.
- 55:51So I was talking one year, we were at the games, Justin Sala and Mike Kern, and I think Clint Paddock.
- 55:57I think the three of us were sitting there talking and we were watching the 65 year olds.
- 56:02And I was like, guys, that's like 20 years from now.
- 56:06It was probably more like 18 years for me.
- 56:08But I was like, that's like 20 years from now.
- 56:11Are we gonna be doing this?
- 56:12Like, what do you think?
- 56:14And we were all like, yeah, I sure do hope so.
- 56:17You know, but I mean, I think longevity is one of the things that I'm passionate about.
- 56:22And I want my body to be able to continue to do CrossFit, whatever CrossFit is going to look like for me when I'm 65.
- 56:30I mean, I hope I can still do muscle ups and I hope I can still snatch and all that kind of stuff.
- 56:35But I...
- 56:37I don't feel like it's a season for me.
- 56:39I feel like it's a lifestyle, you know, whether it's CrossFit specifically or, or moving, right.
- 56:45Just like that's part of who I am as a PT too, is getting people back to whatever it is that they love doing.
- 56:49Um, but being able to move better.
- 56:53So that's, that's how I do it is through CrossFit.
- 56:58Uh, the winner of the ladies 90 to 95 division of the CrossFit games is Jen.
- 57:02Yeah.
- 57:05Just keep pushing that envelope.
- 57:11I had Tony Tursky on, and he was talking about how they went from bar muscle-ups to chest-to-bar pull-ups in their division.
- 57:23And they all kind of band together and said, let us do bar muscle-ups.
- 57:28Let us show what we can do.
- 57:31And that's such an inspiration as we age up that.
- 57:37And I think like 16 of the men were able to do bar muscle ups in the 60 to 65 year old division.
- 57:44Yeah.
- 57:45I watched that event.
- 57:46That was really cool.
- 57:48And so like,
- 57:50I love that it's still a challenge and I love that we still get to show it off.
- 57:55And I love that, um, that you all can be inspirations to the world of what health and fitness can look like, um, as we age up.
- 58:06Um, any final thoughts before we say goodbye?
- 58:11No, I mean, really, that's the I think finishing with that whole idea of, you know, longevity, outliving what you thought you could and, you know, maintaining that kind of lifestyle.
- 58:23That's what it's all about.
- 58:24People are all motivated this time of year in January.
- 58:26It's just making it a lifestyle, right?
- 58:28Sticking with it.
- 58:31Well, this has been a blast.
- 58:33Absolutely.
- 58:33I have so much more in my notes to get to, but you were such an interesting person.
- 58:38We got to veer off in all kinds of directions.
- 58:42I would love to have you back on again as we get through the season, see where you're at, and see how healthy you are this year.
- 58:49Yes, I hope very healthy.
- 58:51Thank you.
- 58:53With that, to everybody in the chat, thank you for making this a fun podcast.
- 58:56We love you all.
- 58:58And we'll see everybody next time on the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 59:02Bye, guys.
