- 0:00Wednesday morning at this time, every Wednesday or every few
- 0:03Wednesdays at least, we get an opportunity to speak with
- 0:05Representative Laura Libby who is joining us now, talk over all
- 0:09things, main politics. How are things this morning,
- 0:12Laurel? Oh, things are are great here
- 0:15Matt, but golly, there's so much going on I don't even know where
- 0:18to start. Golly indeed, golly indeed.
- 0:21I was very much struggling out of the outset this morning to
- 0:25find a way to, in a PG kind of environment, describe the latest
- 0:30Grand Platinum isms. Good luck, I know.
- 0:33And it was. I failed.
- 0:34I think I definitely failed, but I gave it a good old college
- 0:37try. The latest scandal, of course,
- 0:40comes down to his his deleted account on Reddit, which, you
- 0:45know, probably was wise of him to be deleting.
- 0:47But as we know, the Internet is forever.
- 0:49So you can't always really hide a lot of that stuff.
- 0:51And unearthed posts from both I think 2017 and 2021 have raised
- 0:57renewed concerns about the guy's temperament, judgments, general
- 1:01weirdness, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
- 1:05We are now though in Laurel, the actual general election, let's
- 1:08just be honest, right the primaries overs and it was over
- 1:11as soon as Janet Mills dropped out.
- 1:12So you are looking at Platner versus Collins.
- 1:15My question for you is this latest thing that just came out
- 1:20and all the things that undoubtedly will be following
- 1:22it, how much will they matter? You know, in the in the modern
- 1:26era of politics, does scandal like this affect anybody anymore
- 1:31or is he ultimately at this point, have voters decided?
- 1:36I know he's weird. I know he's, you know, different
- 1:38and troubling and problematic or whatever.
- 1:40But I don't care. I have other things that I'm
- 1:42voting on. What do you think?
- 1:43What's your read on it? Yeah, I certainly it doesn't
- 1:47matter for the extreme left. The extreme left adores him and
- 1:51refuses to consider that he may be, as you say, unstable and
- 1:56unfit, but the rest of the electorate is largely sane.
- 2:02Matt, right. And so where the extreme left is
- 2:08still embracing Plattner as their their savior here, I think
- 2:12that Republicans and sane Democrats hopefully will save
- 2:19the day here, win the day and vote for a proven fighter for
- 2:24Maine that is is stable and that you don't hear all of these
- 2:28stories coming out about. So I'm optimistic that sanity
- 2:32will prevail. So so.
- 2:34Your contention is just basically that the Democrats
- 2:36have decided that they don't care, but that the rest of the
- 2:39state, whether it's Republicans, you know, unenrolled, the people
- 2:43that are sort of on the sidelines, kind of, you know,
- 2:46maybe not even paying too much attention to politics right now.
- 2:49They do or will. And by the time they actually
- 2:52have to make a decision on this, this stuff is all going to
- 2:54matter a great deal, essentially, is what you're
- 2:56saying. I think so, and what's more than
- 2:59that, I hope policy matters at some point here too.
- 3:02Oh, wouldn't that be nice? Wouldn't that be nice?
- 3:04I hope policy comes into play here because when you actually
- 3:08listen to Plattner, never mind the fact that many of the issues
- 3:12he's talking about are more drastically affected by state
- 3:14government and what Augusta Democrats have done under
- 3:17Governor Mills over the last eight years.
- 3:19Most of what he talks about is more affected by state.
- 3:22But the fact is his policies that he is openly advocating for
- 3:27are extreme and would drastically if implemented.
- 3:32No, that's the big question too, right?
- 3:34If implemented, would be extraordinarily a terrible
- 3:40detrimental dangerous to our country.
- 3:43They would indeed. No, they, they definitely would.
- 3:46You know, I, I think I mostly agree with what you're saying
- 3:49here. The thing that causes me pause
- 3:51is that we are in an era right now where I think that the
- 3:54public has been almost like, I don't know, like neutralized in,
- 3:58in some way. Like there's so many scandals.
- 4:00There's so much information. I mean, like, if you were to
- 4:02tell me, Laurel asks me a question, Hey, can you just name
- 4:05all of the grand platter scandals?
- 4:07I mean, I'm sure I would come up with like, you know, 50 or 60%
- 4:10of them, but I would be missing things.
- 4:12It's, you know, you almost get overwhelmed by so much.
- 4:15And I think that sometimes that makes people shut down a little
- 4:17bit and they're like, well, look, not my not my favorite
- 4:20dude, but you know, I really don't like Susan Collins or I
- 4:23really don't like Donald Trump. And there's like, other forces
- 4:26at work that they'll be voting based on because they've since
- 4:29given up on voting for like, nobility, you know, it's like.
- 4:32Yeah, we also assume that you know the folks who are listening
- 4:36to you every morning and who are really plugged into politics and
- 4:39paying attention to what's going on.
- 4:41They know most scandals, right? But when you talk to your next
- 4:44door neighbor that's not following me in politics, some
- 4:46folks still, you know, haven't heard of Grand Plattner, don't
- 4:50know what's going on, aren't following and won't be until
- 4:53closer. So I mean, I guess there's
- 4:55multiple questions there, right? How, how well do we get the
- 4:58message out there? How well do we turn out voters?
- 5:02How much do people care? Are they just so having so much
- 5:07information coming at them that it's just too much?
- 5:11Those are all, I think important questions and I don't know.
- 5:14I, I hope, as I said, I hope that sanity prevails.
- 5:18I certainly we working to ensure that sanity prevails because
- 5:22there's a lot at stake. Well.
- 5:23Tell me a little bit about that work because obviously, you
- 5:26know, elections have a lot to do with how people feel and TV ads
- 5:31and all that stuff. But on the ground level, I don't
- 5:34think there's a true appreciation in the audience or
- 5:36people who just follow politics about how much it matters what's
- 5:39done by the people that are in support of various campaigns and
- 5:44political activities, right? I mean, you've made basically
- 5:46your life now doing that kind of thing.
- 5:48So what does that look like on the ground right now and what do
- 5:51you expect to see as the year continues?
- 5:53You know, every kind of talks about social media like it's the
- 5:57be all end all, but that's not the nuts and bolts of campaigns.
- 6:00That's, you know, flash in the pan.
- 6:04Clicks don't mean anything, not like the real work does.
- 6:08And So what does that look like? That looks like folks knocking
- 6:12doors across the state and having actual conversation.
- 6:14That looks like individuals talking to their friends, family
- 6:17and neighbors and ensuring that they turn out.
- 6:19And this year we really have to make sure that low propensity
- 6:23Republican voters turn out. You know, a lot of folks are
- 6:27only paying attention to very high level national politics.
- 6:31And when they see Trump in the White House, they go, OK, I'm
- 6:34all set. You know, there's I don't need
- 6:36to vote this year. There's nothing really big
- 6:39stakes and maybe aren't paying attention to the Senate race to
- 6:42the state legislature. And so making sure that folks
- 6:46know there is actually quite a lot at stake.
- 6:50Our entire state is at stake, not just the Senate race and
- 6:54others. And so, yeah, at Lead Maine, of
- 6:57course, folks can learn more about us at leadmaine.com.
- 6:59At Lead Maine, we're going to be working to to educate Mainers on
- 7:04just what's at stake and then to turn out voters to make sure
- 7:08that folks do show up at the polls this fall.
- 7:11We're speaking with Representative Laura Libby,
- 7:13who's joining us, talking a little bit about what's going on
- 7:14in Maine politics. The other thing I'd like to ask
- 7:16you about while I have a couple minutes here is, you know, you
- 7:19mentioned there's a lot of other things going on.
- 7:21And one of those is the gubernatorial race.
- 7:23We're getting down to less now than three weeks.
- 7:26It is just a few Tuesdays around the corner, and we will finally,
- 7:30mercifully, be able to know who the nominees are for both the
- 7:33Republican and the Democratic primaries.
- 7:36Do you have a sense of what you're hearing on the ground
- 7:38from people right now in terms of especially the Republican
- 7:41side of the race? You know, are people still
- 7:44having a tough, difficult time making up their mind?
- 7:45Are they starting to make that decision?
- 7:47I mean, they have to because we're getting there.
- 7:49But like what's happening out there, you think?
- 7:52Yeah, I think there's two important questions there.
- 7:54One is, are they making up their mind?
- 7:55Are they making up their mind even how they're going to vote,
- 7:58not just who they're going to vote for?
- 8:00But we have ranked choice voting in play here and we've never
- 8:04seen such a big field when voting via ranked choice voting.
- 8:09And so I've certainly heard a fair amount of confusion and
- 8:12questions on that front. And there will be rank choice
- 8:18information forthcoming from lead Main.
- 8:19So stay tuned today. But I think if folks are
- 8:23starting to look at who to vote for, Matt, this is the same
- 8:28thing. You know, folks who are really
- 8:30plugged in, paying attention, they know perhaps who they're
- 8:33going to vote for. But I got a call yesterday from
- 8:35a close friend who said, OK, I'm, I'm starting to try to
- 8:39figure out who I'm voting for. And can you tell me about XY and
- 8:43Z candidates? And really knew nothing besides,
- 8:45you know, here are a couple names of folks running for for
- 8:48governor. And so, yeah, I think that
- 8:50everybody is starting to pay attention.
- 8:51Everyone that knows that there's a primary and starting to make
- 8:56those decisions. I am probably going to go vote
- 8:59this week or next week. I vote early and but I don't see
- 9:04folks turning out in droves to vote early this year.
- 9:07There is still a fair amount of confusion regarding retrace
- 9:11voting. Yeah, there is.
- 9:12Do you have a recommendation? I don't want to spoil anything
- 9:14you're releasing later today, but do you?
- 9:15I've been asked by people, including last night.
- 9:18I was giving a talk last night and it was like it was on the
- 9:21minds of people. They're like, what do you, what
- 9:23do you, what do you do? Like, what do you want to do?
- 9:24Like, what do you think I should do?
- 9:26Should I rank? Should I not rank?
- 9:27Because in the Republican side of the aisle, there's a giant
- 9:30conflict. I think in their heart, which is
- 9:31that they hate rank choice voting.
- 9:33They think it's bad. They think it's evil.
- 9:34And so do I, by the way, if anybody's confused, but it's
- 9:38there. And if you are going to be
- 9:40voting in this race, you know, and you you choose a candidate
- 9:44and that candidate gets knocked out in one of the rounds and you
- 9:47don't rank, then you now basically never existed.
- 9:50You never were there. You have been deleted from the
- 9:53from the election. So my recommendation to people
- 9:56has been actually, as much as I despise it to rank, but I also
- 10:00acknowledge that, you know, if you're so philosophically
- 10:02opposed to it that that that makes the, you know, a lot of
- 10:05the big ick, you know, I don't, I don't blame you for it.
- 10:09Do you have a recommendation for people or do you have a
- 10:11perspective on it at least? I certainly do.
- 10:14You know, I, I've never ranked before when we're looking at the
- 10:18ranked choice races that we've had, you know, not going to vote
- 10:22for Jared Golden. Why would I rank?
- 10:24So it hasn't even been a question in my mind.
- 10:27But there are candidates in the gubernatorial primary that I
- 10:30like, I think would be good for Maine.
- 10:31There are candidates in the gubernatorial primary that I, I
- 10:34do not like and I, I don't think would be good for Maine.
- 10:37So I am, I'm planning to selectively rank.
- 10:39I am planning to rank candidates.
- 10:42Yeah, I'm planning to rank a number of candidates, but not
- 10:45all. And I'll, I'll rank the
- 10:47candidates that I like and think would be good for Maine.
- 10:50And I won't rank the candidates that I, I think would be less
- 10:54good for Maine. So that's how I'm going to go
- 10:56about it. You know, I, I hear folks saying
- 10:59that they're going to just vote for one all the way across.
- 11:02You can. But like you said, that ballot,
- 11:05if that candidate that you vote for all the way across gets does
- 11:10not get enough votes to continue in the race, then your ballot
- 11:13will be exhausted and and move to the side and not counted
- 11:16moving forward. So I do plan to rank for the
- 11:19first time, Matt. You my wow, this is breaking
- 11:22news. Breaking news.
- 11:24Laura Libby will be sort of kind of a little bit ranking for
- 11:26sure. That's a that's a hell of a
- 11:28strategy. Actually.
- 11:29I haven't even thought about partially ranking, but that's
- 11:30it. That's an interesting way of
- 11:31going about it. Unfortunately, we're out of
- 11:33time, so we could break this down more, but alas, we have
- 11:35lost all of our time. So thank you as always,
- 11:37Representative Laura Libby, and we will talk again in a couple
- 11:40weeks. Appreciate it as always.
- 11:41Thanks so much. Have a good. 1.
