- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition of Fair Territory. I'm
- 0:04Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo, and before we get
- 0:07Speaker 1: into it, I want to thank our co host the
- 0:09Speaker 1: last week while I was off, Robert Murray and Tim Kirchin,
- 0:13Speaker 1: and most of all, I want to thank Olana because
- 0:15Speaker 1: in any business you want to work with true pros.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Alana is a true pro. I am grateful that she
- 0:21Speaker 1: is my partner here. Now we can get into things,
- 0:25Speaker 1: and we can get into Alana's former team, but we're
- 0:27Speaker 1: not going to start with.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Them, all right, Can you start with the Dodgers?
- 0:31Speaker 3: It was great, Yeah, it was. It was great to
- 0:33Speaker 3: be with Robert and Tim. But I'm so happy that
- 0:37Speaker 3: you are back and you're right. Let's get to the
- 0:39Speaker 3: lead and those mighty mighty Brewers.
- 0:41Speaker 2: What's going on.
- 0:43Speaker 4: It's impressive obviously what they're doing.
- 0:45Speaker 1: And let's go through the numbers first and just explain
- 0:49Speaker 1: where they are in terms of the division, the races.
- 0:53Speaker 1: All of that twelve game winning streak twenty seven of
- 0:56Speaker 1: thirty one, they've won twenty seven of thirty one. They
- 1:00Speaker 1: have the best record in baseball by six and a
- 1:02Speaker 1: half games, By six and a half games, they're on
- 1:05Speaker 1: a one hundred and three win pace, and you wonder
- 1:07Speaker 1: how the offense works. We're gonna show you two different
- 1:10Speaker 1: full screens here to explain just what they do. Runs
- 1:14Speaker 1: per game right now, they are tied for first in
- 1:17Speaker 1: the majors.
- 1:17Speaker 4: With the Dodgers. It's incredible.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Batting average, second on base second, slugging fourteenth. Why is
- 1:24Speaker 1: the slugging fourteenth, Well, let's look at the next graphic here,
- 1:27Speaker 1: and this explains it. Home runs per game, they're nineteenth.
- 1:30Speaker 4: In the majors.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But what do they do well everything else? Strikeout rate
- 1:35Speaker 1: twenty six, one of the best teams in the majors
- 1:37Speaker 1: in that regard outs on the basis, that's whatob is.
- 1:41Speaker 1: How many outs do they make on the bases twenty
- 1:43Speaker 1: six in the majors. Fifth, best extra base taking percentage,
- 1:48Speaker 1: that's the last category. Extra base taking percentage fourth in
- 1:52Speaker 1: the majors. So all of these little things that they
- 1:55Speaker 1: do so well, as Brian Reynolds of the Pirates said yesterday,
- 1:58Speaker 1: they just do every thing right. In addition, a lot
- 2:02Speaker 1: of they pitch great. They're third in the majors in era,
- 2:06Speaker 1: eighth in strikeout rate. They've got it all going and
- 2:10Speaker 1: it's really interesting to me that they're doing this in
- 2:13Speaker 1: a sport in which what's valued right now power velocity,
- 2:18Speaker 1: pitch velocity, exit velocity.
- 2:21Speaker 4: They don't necessarily have that.
- 2:22Speaker 1: They have it to a degree on the pitching staff,
- 2:24Speaker 1: but that is not the way they go about it,
- 2:27Speaker 1: and they're shaming the entire sport doing it their own way,
- 2:31Speaker 1: a fundamentally sound way, and you'll wonder why more teams
- 2:36Speaker 1: don't follow suit. And there's one more point I want
- 2:38Speaker 1: to make on the Brewers.
- 2:40Speaker 4: We talk about small market.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Teams, how they can't win, they can't sustain success. Brewers
- 2:44Speaker 1: make the playoffs this year, which they are bound to do.
- 2:47Speaker 1: It will be their seventh playoff appearance in eight years.
- 2:50Speaker 1: And you'll say, oh, Camp, but they haven't won a
- 2:52Speaker 1: World Series. That is not the measure. The measure is
- 2:54Speaker 1: getting to the playoffs and then hopefully in any case
- 2:58Speaker 1: but big market, small market, being lucky enough to put
- 3:00Speaker 1: it together, healthy enough to sustain three or four rounds.
- 3:04Speaker 4: That's how this sport works.
- 3:06Speaker 1: And they are doing it at a higher level than
- 3:09Speaker 1: any other club and.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Ken because of the way that they're doing it, they
- 3:13Speaker 3: may go in as a division winner and not have
- 3:15Speaker 3: to go in as a wildcard team, which they have
- 3:18Speaker 3: been exited.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Early the last couple of years.
- 3:20Speaker 3: How big would that be for them to go in
- 3:23Speaker 3: as a division winner, perhaps a host in the first
- 3:25Speaker 3: round and not have to go the wildcard route.
- 3:29Speaker 1: It's big for any team, Alana, and obviously it's something
- 3:32Speaker 1: all these teams strive for. And we're going to talk
- 3:34Speaker 1: about the Dodgers and Padres in a second. Right now,
- 3:37Speaker 1: the two teams with the buys in the National League
- 3:40Speaker 1: would be the Brewers and the Phillies. And of course
- 3:43Speaker 1: you skip around, you get a buye into the division series.
- 3:46Speaker 4: You're in great shape if you do that.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Otherwise you're subjected to what you just mentioned. What the
- 3:52Speaker 1: Brewers have dealt with the wildcard round, all the problems
- 3:56Speaker 1: that can ensue in a two of three. So they
- 3:59Speaker 1: have done this again at an extremely high level. And
- 4:01Speaker 1: I want to also mention the Blue Jays here before
- 4:04Speaker 1: we get into the Dodgers and Padres, because the Blue
- 4:06Speaker 1: Jays do a lot of similar things. They don't strike out,
- 4:09Speaker 1: lowest strikeout rate in the majors, high batting average, high
- 4:13Speaker 1: on base they slug a little bit more than the Brewers,
- 4:16Speaker 1: but they too, are a fairly fundamentally sound team, and
- 4:20Speaker 1: it is showing in the American League East what they've
- 4:23Speaker 1: done there. They've played at an extremely high level all
- 4:26Speaker 1: season long, much like their friends in Milwaukee.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks like the NL West.
- 4:31Speaker 3: I thought it was going to be a two horse
- 4:33Speaker 3: race ken between the Brewers and the Cubs. Right now
- 4:35Speaker 3: it looks like the Brewers are pulling away, and it's
- 4:38Speaker 3: a much tighter race.
- 4:39Speaker 2: In the NL West.
- 4:40Speaker 3: The Padres have leapfrogged the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers
- 4:44Speaker 3: are now in second place. The Padres are playing tremendously well,
- 4:48Speaker 3: and they will face off six times in the next
- 4:50Speaker 3: ten days.
- 4:51Speaker 1: They will Alana, And let's show you exactly how this
- 4:55Speaker 1: has transpired over the.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Last six weeks. It's actually been one day less.
- 4:59Speaker 1: Than six weeks in which this whole thing has turned.
- 5:02Speaker 1: July third n West standings, Dodgers fifty six and thirty two,
- 5:06Speaker 1: a nine game lead over the Padres. Today, it is
- 5:10Speaker 1: a ten game swing in a span of forty one days,
- 5:13Speaker 1: including the All Star break San Diego sixty nine and
- 5:17Speaker 1: fifty two. The Dodgers one game back at sixty eight
- 5:19Speaker 1: and fifty three. That's as rapid a turnaround as you
- 5:23Speaker 1: will see. And Alta, We've been talking about this all year.
- 5:27Speaker 1: The one thing that has bugged me about the Dodgers,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and I understand it because they're coming off a deep
- 5:31Speaker 1: run into the postseason, a World Series title, but there's
- 5:35Speaker 1: been an overall lack of urgency. They've slow played injuries,
- 5:40Speaker 1: they've kind of just drifted along without putting down the hammer.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Now again, you had injuries coming off of the World
- 5:49Speaker 1: Series title, Blake Tryan and Evan Phillips, others who were
- 5:52Speaker 1: worn down from that, and you have, naturally this kind
- 5:57Speaker 1: of letdown every team experiences. It's, let's face it, old
- 6:01Speaker 1: hat for the Dodgers to make the playoffs, but at
- 6:04Speaker 1: some point, at some point, they've got to turn it on. Now,
- 6:07Speaker 1: maybe it's as you mentioned, these six games in the
- 6:09Speaker 1: next ten days against San Diego, first at Dodger Stadium,
- 6:12Speaker 1: then at Petco Park. But you wonder if the Dodgers
- 6:15Speaker 1: will be able to do that. And you've got with
- 6:18Speaker 1: the Padres a team that has shown urgency, a team
- 6:22Speaker 1: that acted with far greater urgency at the deadline. We
- 6:25Speaker 1: saw what aj Preller did. He basically fixed every weekness
- 6:27Speaker 1: they had. So yes, the Dodgers are going to get
- 6:30Speaker 1: Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates and Michael Kopek back. Okay,
- 6:35Speaker 1: but what level are they going to pitch at and
- 6:38Speaker 1: is everyone else going to stay healthy? We just saw
- 6:40Speaker 1: Brock Stewart go down. He just got there. So this
- 6:44Speaker 1: kind of thing. If I'm the Dodgers, I'm a little
- 6:47Speaker 1: alarmed right now. And if I'm Dave Roberts, I'm saying, guys,
- 6:51Speaker 1: it's time to go. They should know that. I understand that,
- 6:54Speaker 1: but it is time for them to go. And on
- 6:57Speaker 1: the other hand, the Padres all the credit in the
- 6:59Speaker 1: world what they've done offensively, the moves that they've made
- 7:03Speaker 1: with Loriano and O'Hearn and Freddy for meen transformed the offense, made.
- 7:07Speaker 4: It much deeper. And of course the bullpen is utterly ridiculous.
- 7:11Speaker 2: It's disgusting.
- 7:12Speaker 3: It was the best bullpen in baseball before they even
- 7:15Speaker 3: added Mason Miller. Now, the Padres haven't won the division,
- 7:18Speaker 3: Ken you know this since two thousand and six. Is
- 7:20Speaker 3: this the year that it changes? Do the Padres win
- 7:23Speaker 3: the NL West or do the Dodgers get it together?
- 7:26Speaker 1: If I had to bet right now. I would bet
- 7:28Speaker 1: the Padres. I just like everything that is going on
- 7:32Speaker 1: with them, the way they are going about it, the
- 7:34Speaker 1: way they're playing, just the overall vibe, for lack of
- 7:37Speaker 1: a better phrase, Dennis Lynn and the Athletic Today explains
- 7:41Speaker 1: by the numbers, just how the Padres have done this
- 7:43Speaker 1: in less than six weeks. I'm curious to your opinion.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Do you think the Dodgers can win this division as
- 7:50Speaker 1: they've done so many times over the last decade.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Well, I can tell you that I don't think that
- 7:54Speaker 3: they've gotten any sort of positive traction the entire length
- 7:57Speaker 3: of the season. Can we are very close to what
- 7:59Speaker 3: thirty games left in the year thirty thirty five something
- 8:02Speaker 3: like that. There's not been these amazing streaks of time
- 8:05Speaker 3: in which the Dodgers have rattled off, you know, nine
- 8:07Speaker 3: ten eleven wins straight, like what the Brewers are doing
- 8:10Speaker 3: right now. And I know that they keep saying that,
- 8:12Speaker 3: you know, everybody's not healthy. As long as the Dodgers
- 8:15Speaker 3: are healthy to the key components at the right time,
- 8:18Speaker 3: which is the end of the season going into October,
- 8:21Speaker 3: you know, end of September going into October, I do
- 8:24Speaker 3: believe that they win the division again, but it's not
- 8:27Speaker 3: going to be by a very comfortable margin. We're not
- 8:29Speaker 3: going to see a ten eleven game cushion. And I
- 8:31Speaker 3: honestly think whatever happens in the next six games with
- 8:34Speaker 3: the Padres determines the division entirely. So if they win
- 8:37Speaker 3: these next two series, then I think they win the division.
- 8:40Speaker 3: If the Padres win the next two series, I think
- 8:42Speaker 3: San Diego wins its first inn Al West title since
- 8:44Speaker 3: two thousand and six.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Well, I'll just add one more thing. I'll believe the
- 8:49Speaker 1: Dodgers are going to be healthy and reasonably full strength
- 8:53Speaker 1: when I see it.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yeah, you and me both, Yeah, you and me both.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Yeah, they're getting healthy. They're coming back. They're coming back.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Well.
- 9:02Speaker 3: The Foul Territory Network has both sides of this race covered,
- 9:05Speaker 3: Friar Territory and Dodgers' Territory. We're turning out multiple no
- 9:09Speaker 3: episodes every single week. Tune in for our crossover today
- 9:12Speaker 3: with Friar hosts Kyle Glazier joining Clympsius and me on
- 9:15Speaker 3: the Dodgers Territory Show at noon Pacific that's three pm
- 9:18Speaker 3: Eastern after Foul Territory subscribe on YouTube and wherever you
- 9:23Speaker 3: get your podcast to the entire Foul Territory network all right,
- 9:27Speaker 3: from the NL West Ken to the AL West and
- 9:30Speaker 3: the Houston Astros. I don't know how this team continues
- 9:34Speaker 3: to be a top of the division almost every single
- 9:37Speaker 3: year despite losing a lot of key pieces to their
- 9:40Speaker 3: starting rotation Alex Bregman as well as Kyle Tucker. How
- 9:44Speaker 3: are they doing this?
- 9:45Speaker 1: And then you're Don Alvarez in early May. We have
- 9:48Speaker 1: not seen him. It's amazing what they've done. And yes,
- 9:51Speaker 1: Christian Javier and Spencer Araghetti are back in the rotation.
- 9:54Speaker 4: It's a great thing for the Astros.
- 9:56Speaker 1: But the news on Josh Hater is rather disturbing, to
- 10:00Speaker 1: say the least. Joe's spot is saying yesterday it looks
- 10:02Speaker 1: like it's going to be more than two weeks because
- 10:04Speaker 1: of that shoulder. It just does not sound good here.
- 10:07Speaker 1: And if it's more than two weeks, then we're looking
- 10:09Speaker 1: at the end of August, assuming he is actually all
- 10:12Speaker 1: right to pitch. Even at that point, then he has
- 10:14Speaker 1: to build up again. So will we see Josh Hater
- 10:17Speaker 1: again this season? At this point that is a legitimate question. Now,
- 10:21Speaker 1: the Mariners had their eight game winning streak end yesterday
- 10:24Speaker 1: in Baltimore. But they made the two big moves of
- 10:27Speaker 1: the deadline, Naylor, who has been great, Suarez eh okay,
- 10:30Speaker 1: and they also have a pitching staff that we've been
- 10:33Speaker 1: talking about for years that is capable of doing big things.
- 10:37Speaker 1: To me, you've got to slay the Giant, and what
- 10:40Speaker 1: I mean by that is you've got to prove you
- 10:42Speaker 1: can beat the Astros and overtake them in a division
- 10:44Speaker 1: race before we really believe that the Mariners are that team.
- 10:48Speaker 1: But they are positioned to do that. It's just the
- 10:51Speaker 1: Astros have this way about them and even if Hater
- 10:54Speaker 1: is down, obviously it's compromising their bullpen.
- 10:57Speaker 4: If that's the case.
- 10:58Speaker 1: In a long term sense, Brian A. Brady proves he
- 11:01Speaker 1: can close, I'm sure.
- 11:02Speaker 4: He'll do that.
- 11:03Speaker 1: He did it last night. But everybody gets moved up
- 11:06Speaker 1: a notch. It becomes more difficult, as Eric Kratz pointed
- 11:09Speaker 1: out on Foul Territory yesterday, to go back to back
- 11:12Speaker 1: days and close out games because your A guys are used,
- 11:16Speaker 1: your A relievers are used in the first game, and
- 11:18Speaker 1: you might not have them for the second or the third,
- 11:20Speaker 1: whatever the case might be.
- 11:22Speaker 4: It's a difficult spot.
- 11:23Speaker 1: They're in without Hater, assuming it's going to be that
- 11:25Speaker 1: way for some time, but I would still pick them
- 11:29Speaker 1: until proven otherwise.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that the Hater loss, obviously is a
- 11:34Speaker 3: huge loss. I'd be surprised if we saw Josh Hayter
- 11:36Speaker 3: back with the Astros, certainly in this regular season. Much
- 11:40Speaker 3: more to come on Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal. It
- 11:42Speaker 3: so great to have Ken back, of course on his show.
- 11:45Speaker 3: Next we're going to have Grill and Ken, So get
- 11:47Speaker 3: your questions in for Grill and Ken right after the break.
- 11:50Speaker 2: And a word from our Foul Territory partners.
- 11:53Speaker 5: Hey, we love ripping flap packs on Arena Club. I
- 11:56Speaker 5: just ripped one in a ruby pack. Those are fancy schmancy.
- 12:00Speaker 5: And I pulled a Matt Shaw twenty twenty three Bowman
- 12:04Speaker 5: Draft Aqua Lunar Creator refractor card and I guess what.
- 12:09Speaker 5: Guess what? I got a little offer. You get the
- 12:10Speaker 5: instant offer right away. Okay, so they're offering me one
- 12:14Speaker 5: hundred twenty one bucks, sell it back and then I
- 12:16Speaker 5: can get a new slab pack.
- 12:17Speaker 4: What do I do?
- 12:19Speaker 6: I want to see this thing? Hold on, look at that.
- 12:21Speaker 6: That's a beautiful card. You know what I think that's
- 12:24Speaker 6: a safe bet. I think it's gonna make you a
- 12:26Speaker 6: little bit of money. I think the more more big
- 12:29Speaker 6: league time he gets, I'd almost take the deal, though
- 12:32Speaker 6: I'm in it for the chase.
- 12:33Speaker 4: I like opening more packs.
- 12:35Speaker 6: I think that one hundred and twenty one can buy
- 12:37Speaker 6: you a couple more slabs to open. And uh, I
- 12:39Speaker 6: think you keep chasing until you get someone you really like.
- 12:42Speaker 6: But that's the best part about it for me.
- 12:43Speaker 4: That's right.
- 12:44Speaker 5: You can sell it back one hundred and twenty one
- 12:46Speaker 5: bucks and then open up another slab pack. Use the
- 12:48Speaker 5: code foul to receive twenty percent off your first slab
- 12:50Speaker 5: pack or card purchase at arenaclub dot com slash foul.
- 12:59Speaker 2: All right, we welcome you back.
- 13:00Speaker 3: That's a fair territory as time now for Grill and
- 13:02Speaker 3: Ken an opportunity for you to ask Can Rosenthal some questions.
- 13:06Speaker 3: The first question is, in regards to you, Ken, whether
- 13:08Speaker 3: you believe in peaking too early? Are the Brewers peaking
- 13:12Speaker 3: too early?
- 13:14Speaker 1: It's a fair question, right, because the Brewers are so
- 13:16Speaker 1: incredibly hot, you wonder if they can sustain it, and
- 13:20Speaker 1: the answer is they probably cannot. Just that the Detroit
- 13:22Speaker 1: Tigers earlier this season could not sustain what they were doing.
- 13:26Speaker 1: The better question is which teams will be hot in
- 13:30Speaker 1: October going into October? And that is when this matters. Actually,
- 13:35Speaker 1: some teams have had recent success, the Texas Rangers in
- 13:38Speaker 1: twenty twenty three without even being hot going into October,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and then they got hot once the playoffs started. So
- 13:45Speaker 1: I don't know that the teams that were talking about
- 13:47Speaker 1: the Tigers the Brewers can peak too early. They're good
- 13:50Speaker 1: and they're going to be good, but how can they
- 13:54Speaker 1: sustain it and how can they regenerate themselves coming into October?
- 13:58Speaker 4: That's going to be the question.
- 14:00Speaker 1: What I like about the Brewers in this regard is
- 14:02Speaker 1: they are such a strong pitching staff and with Miserowski back,
- 14:06Speaker 1: presumably at some point they're going to be a dangerous
- 14:09Speaker 1: team in October. With Peralta Missowski, Brandon Woodriff doing what
- 14:13Speaker 1: he's doing, Quinn Priester, they've got a really good group
- 14:17Speaker 1: going right now. So I like that about them a lot.
- 14:20Speaker 1: They've got depth to in the pitching, so that's going
- 14:23Speaker 1: to be there. The offense can do what it's doing
- 14:26Speaker 1: right now, I don't know, but certainly they will drive
- 14:31Speaker 1: teams crazy, And I was thinking about this today. Let's
- 14:34Speaker 1: say the Brewers played the Yankees in the World Series.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Let's say it was this year's Brewers against last year's Yankees.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Those Brewers, these Brewers would have driven the Yankees' batty
- 14:43Speaker 1: much like the Dodgers did. And they're going to do
- 14:45Speaker 1: that to other teams as well. So I am anxious
- 14:48Speaker 1: to see how they look come the postseason.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Ken, Is this the best use of a twenty six
- 14:54Speaker 3: man roster? What Pat Murphy and mark on Tanasio in
- 14:57Speaker 3: the front office and the coaching staff is doing right now?
- 15:00Speaker 2: They're getting a lot out of a lot of guys.
- 15:03Speaker 1: You're absolutely right, Alana, And it really extends beyond twenty six.
- 15:06Speaker 1: They've got guys in the miners who have contributed, Chad Patrick,
- 15:09Speaker 1: Logan Henderson, and they're not even on the major league
- 15:12Speaker 1: team right now. So what they have done, with a
- 15:17Speaker 1: piecemeal budget and just a lot of different elements is
- 15:21Speaker 1: build what is almost an ideal team. When I say team,
- 15:26Speaker 1: I don't mean a collection of individuals, a group that
- 15:29Speaker 1: works together, cohesively and is all committed to the same thing.
- 15:34Speaker 1: And that's what the key thing to me is with them.
- 15:37Speaker 1: They have an ethic about them, a way about them
- 15:41Speaker 1: in which there's not much ego. They are all pulling
- 15:44Speaker 1: in the same direction, and it's a team concept. The
- 15:48Speaker 1: way they offensively go about it is a team concept.
- 15:51Speaker 1: It's not just guys swinging for the fences. It's one
- 15:54Speaker 1: guy doing this, the next guy doing that, going first
- 15:57Speaker 1: to third, sacrifice, moving runner, all these different things that
- 16:01Speaker 1: they do. And they will hit for power at times
- 16:03Speaker 1: as well. So from that perspective, they're gonna be a
- 16:08Speaker 1: difficult team to beat in the postseason.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Tommy Losorda used to say that everybody should be pulling
- 16:13Speaker 3: on the same side of the rope. That is the
- 16:16Speaker 3: twenty twenty five Milwaukee Brewers. Okay, on your article Ken
- 16:19Speaker 3: recently about Mason Miller, obviously we know that he's part
- 16:22Speaker 3: of that unbelievable uh Padres bullpen. But Armand wants to
- 16:26Speaker 3: know were when you're talking about the Mets being in
- 16:29Speaker 3: as one of the teams, would the Mets just have
- 16:31Speaker 3: gotten Miller back, or would have JP Sears or any
- 16:33Speaker 3: other a starter been a part of the package.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Armand That's a good question, and unfortunately it's one I
- 16:40Speaker 1: did not ask. I was just more concerned about whether
- 16:43Speaker 1: they were in on Miller and how seriously they were
- 16:45Speaker 1: in on Miller, And they were, and the way I
- 16:48Speaker 1: reported it was that they were perhaps the most serious
- 16:51Speaker 1: team after San Diego. They had extensive discussions about this.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I would imagine at some point Sears came up because
- 16:59Speaker 1: he came up in the other discussions with the Padres,
- 17:01Speaker 1: and the Mets certainly needed a starter as well. I
- 17:04Speaker 1: don't know that JP Sears would have been the answer.
- 17:06Speaker 1: Padres already have demoted him to the minor leagues. But
- 17:10Speaker 1: to answer your question, I don't know because I didn't
- 17:12Speaker 1: ask and Armand I should have asked.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Maybe Armand can be an apprentice with you one day
- 17:19Speaker 3: and just kind of like follow you around Ken, maybe
- 17:21Speaker 3: he can ask some questions.
- 17:22Speaker 2: He's had some good questions here on Grill and Ken. Likelihood.
- 17:27Speaker 2: As we talked about earlier of the Padres.
- 17:29Speaker 3: Winning the NL West, what is the likelihood of the
- 17:32Speaker 3: Mariners winning the AL West or do you think it
- 17:34Speaker 3: still needs to be Houston. You got to slay that
- 17:36Speaker 3: beast as you were talking about.
- 17:38Speaker 1: Yeah, as I mentioned before, to me, that's the whole
- 17:41Speaker 1: thing here.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Houston is the team that.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Has been at the top of that division most of
- 17:48Speaker 1: the last decade, and I don't see that changing until
- 17:51Speaker 1: it changes.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Right now. It's kind of a cop out answer, I
- 17:54Speaker 4: get it.
- 17:55Speaker 1: But to me, as I just said, you've got to
- 17:58Speaker 1: slay the dragon, you've got to knock them out, and
- 18:01Speaker 1: you gotta do it, it's kind of like what the
- 18:02Speaker 1: Padres have to do with the Dodgers, and there's something there.
- 18:06Speaker 4: So I would go with Houston until proven otherwise.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Let me ask you this before we go to break.
- 18:11Speaker 3: By the way, Duden, Dork of the Week is next.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I don't believe the Padres are scared of the Dodgers
- 18:16Speaker 3: at all. Are the Mariners intimidated by the Astros?
- 18:20Speaker 4: I don't believe.
- 18:21Speaker 2: So.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I don't know that it's the same thing as the
- 18:23Speaker 1: Padres and Dodgers, because the Padres in their minds, had
- 18:28Speaker 1: the Dodgers beat last year, and they knocked them out
- 18:31Speaker 1: a couple of years before that. Now, granted, the Dodgers
- 18:33Speaker 1: came back and won the Division series down two to
- 18:35Speaker 1: one in San Diego. We all know what happened. But
- 18:39Speaker 1: the Padres burn from what happened. They believe that they
- 18:43Speaker 1: were the better team, and certainly now if you look
- 18:45Speaker 1: at their roster, they have every right to believe they
- 18:48Speaker 1: are on equal, if not greater footing than the Dodgers.
- 18:51Speaker 1: The Mariners Astros thing is a little bit different because
- 18:55Speaker 1: the Mariners have been more of a little brother, I guess,
- 18:58Speaker 1: so to speak. But they have shown this year that
- 19:00Speaker 1: they can win in Houston, and they've.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Shown that they can beat the Astros.
- 19:03Speaker 1: So I don't know that it's that kind of thing
- 19:07Speaker 1: where they're scared of them or intimidated by them. It's
- 19:10Speaker 1: just a matter of which team is better.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Yeah, you ask any Dodger fan or player, even Dave Roberts.
- 19:15Speaker 3: The Potteris were the toughest team they faced in the
- 19:18Speaker 3: postseason all of last year. All Right, we're gonna come

- 20:24Speaker 1: Dude, dude, dude.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Time for due to the week with Ken Rosenthal. Who
- 20:35Speaker 2: do you have this week? Ken?
- 20:36Speaker 1: Well, I know we've been talking about them all morning, Alana,
- 20:39Speaker 1: but how can we pick anyone but the Milwaukee Brewers,
- 20:42Speaker 1: winners of twelve straight got free burgers for the good
- 20:44Speaker 1: citizens of Milwaukee by doing that, And it's just to
- 20:49Speaker 1: me a lesson for the entire sport what they've done. Frankly,
- 20:52Speaker 1: it's embarrassing the rest of the sport.
- 20:54Speaker 4: What they've done.
- 20:55Speaker 1: And there is so much to learn here. There is
- 20:57Speaker 1: so much that people can look at and say, oh, okay,
- 21:00Speaker 1: we can do it like that.
- 21:01Speaker 4: You see the twelve straight wins.
- 21:02Speaker 1: The George Web restaurants are going to have to I
- 21:04Speaker 1: don't know what they're going to have to do, but
- 21:06Speaker 1: Brewers are dudes of the week.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Yeah, the Milwaukee Brewers have single handedly put the George
- 21:11Speaker 3: Web restaurants out of business. I'm getting congratulations to the Brewers,
- 21:15Speaker 3: and good on you, George Web for feeding your community.
- 21:18Speaker 2: My dude of the week is a dudet It is Jen.
- 21:21Speaker 3: Powell, of course, becoming the first female Major league baseball umpire.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Congratulations to her. That was well earned.
- 21:27Speaker 3: I mean, she's had to toil through the minor leagues,
- 21:29Speaker 3: just as all umpires have had to do, obviously paying
- 21:32Speaker 3: her dues. Great to see her becoming the first Empire
- 21:34Speaker 3: ever to do a regular season Major league game. Of course,
- 21:37Speaker 3: the game between the Marlins and the Braves, and I
- 21:40Speaker 3: don't want to hear it about the call. Every single
- 21:42Speaker 3: person in their first major league baseball game doesn't have
- 21:44Speaker 3: a perfect umpiring scorecard. Just yesterday, Stebe Bugner missed seven
- 21:49Speaker 3: calls in the first inning. So congratulations to Jen Powell.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Hopefully the first of many. Okay, time now for dork
- 21:55Speaker 3: of the week, Ken, who do you have?
- 22:06Speaker 1: All right? Alta, we haven't talked about this yet, and
- 22:09Speaker 1: in any other week, when maybe less things were happening
- 22:12Speaker 1: or fewer things were happening.
- 22:13Speaker 4: We'd be talking big time about this.
- 22:16Speaker 1: The pole Ad family for deciding to keep the twins
- 22:19Speaker 1: instead of selling them.
- 22:21Speaker 4: They're the dorks of the week, and they're the dorks of.
- 22:23Speaker 1: The week, not for that decision in a vacuum. They're
- 22:26Speaker 1: the dorks of the week because of what has happened
- 22:28Speaker 1: in the last several years with this team, how they've
- 22:30Speaker 1: cut payroll, how they essentially oversaw a fire sale at
- 22:34Speaker 1: the deadline, how they brought this team down from a
- 22:38Speaker 1: pretty high perch, and yet because they couldn't get their price,
- 22:43Speaker 1: they said, you know what, We're not going to do
- 22:44Speaker 1: this and I want one more thing out there. At
- 22:47Speaker 1: least from my perspective on this particular issue, you're going
- 22:50Speaker 1: to hear as we get closer to the CBA talks that, well,
- 22:55Speaker 1: we need a salary cap because owners aren't getting enough
- 22:58Speaker 1: money for their teams. Franchise values are not what they
- 23:00Speaker 1: should be. It's not on the players to get the
- 23:02Speaker 1: franchise values higher. Players are doing a good enough job
- 23:05Speaker 1: just by performing on the field. That's what they're supposed
- 23:08Speaker 1: to do.
- 23:08Speaker 4: So you want to make an argument for a salary gap,
- 23:11Speaker 4: don't make that argument.
- 23:12Speaker 1: At least to me, it's weak. And for the Pole
- 23:15Speaker 1: Ads to kind of just bawl on this sale and
- 23:17Speaker 1: do what the Nationals and Angels have done reverse course
- 23:20Speaker 1: after putting the team on the market, it's bad news
- 23:23Speaker 1: for the fans of Minnesota, and that's who we should
- 23:25Speaker 1: care about the most.
- 23:26Speaker 3: That is exactly what I was going to ask you
- 23:28Speaker 3: in terms of the reverse actions here. How similar is
- 23:32Speaker 3: this situation with the Twins to Artie Moreno, with the
- 23:35Speaker 3: Angels and the group with the Nationals trying to sell
- 23:38Speaker 3: and then deciding not to and then perhaps we will
- 23:40Speaker 3: and then maybe we're not.
- 23:41Speaker 7: Are there similarities in this It's difficult to say without
- 23:45Speaker 7: knowing the particulars, Alana, but the similarity seems to be
- 23:50Speaker 7: they're not getting the prices they wanted.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Well, maybe they're asking too much. I don't know. It's
- 23:55Speaker 1: not something that we're privy to. But the Twins were
- 23:58Speaker 1: pretty clearly in search of one point seven billion, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: the minority investors coming.
- 24:03Speaker 4: In as the Athletic reporter.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Today the valuation is above one point seven billion, So
- 24:09Speaker 1: at that level they.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Could get it.
- 24:10Speaker 1: They just couldn't get the whole chunk, I would imagine.
- 24:13Speaker 1: And again, each situation is different. But maybe owners should
- 24:18Speaker 1: not be looking for X when they're only getting Why.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Yeah, it's unbelievable one point seven billion for the Minnesota Twins.
- 24:25Speaker 3: My dork of the week as the couple that decided
- 24:28Speaker 3: to get married in between a ballgame with the eph
- 24:31Speaker 3: Guardians a guaranteed rate field. Not only to me personally,
- 24:35Speaker 3: is it bad enough to have a JumboTron proposal, but
- 24:40Speaker 3: how about a wedding in the middle of a game?
- 24:42Speaker 3: I don't know, in between innings. I mean, honestly, I
- 24:45Speaker 3: don't know about this. That's not for me, but I
- 24:49Speaker 3: guess I don't know. Happy marriage is that? And my
- 24:52Speaker 3: old lady yelling at clouds I don't know?
- 24:54Speaker 2: This to me is so tacky.
- 24:55Speaker 4: I can only speak to my own personal situation.
- 24:59Speaker 1: My wife would not have gone for such a stunt.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Not the proposal, the wedding, not the ballpark, not any
- 25:05Speaker 1: of it.
- 25:06Speaker 2: To me, it is so unoriginal.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I obviously she has I would imagine she is a
- 25:11Speaker 3: large baseball fan, or she probably would have put the
- 25:13Speaker 3: kebash on this whole situation and the whole thought of
- 25:15Speaker 3: doing this. But in between I mean that that is
- 25:17Speaker 3: a rushed wedding, right, talk about shotgun wedding. You only
- 25:20Speaker 3: have in between innings, Like there's a pitchclock, Like, guys
- 25:23Speaker 3: gotta get on the mound and throw and throw the
- 25:25Speaker 3: baseball cain like do you I do?
- 25:27Speaker 2: Do you sure?
- 25:28Speaker 1: Okay?
- 25:28Speaker 2: Great? Go back to your seats and have a hot talk.
- 25:30Speaker 3: Hey.
- 25:30Speaker 5: An easy way to support the show and wear super
- 25:34Speaker 5: comfy clothing is by heading to foul Territoryshop dot com. Yes,
- 25:38Speaker 5: foul Territory Shop dot com is loaded with foul territory

- 25:49Speaker 5: out a hat, a T shirt, and a lot more
- 25:52Speaker 5: coffee mug in the morning. Foul Territoryshop dot com is
- 25:55Speaker 5: the spot.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Ken.
- 25:59Speaker 3: There was an interesting article from Tyler Kepner talking about
- 26:02Speaker 3: Pete Alonso and what he means to the New York Mets.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Should Steve Cohen and the Mets sign this man up
- 26:09Speaker 3: for a lifetime contract to retire as a Met.
- 26:13Speaker 1: I feel like I'm experiencing deja fulana. We were having
- 26:17Speaker 1: this conversation last year at this time, and it's going
- 26:20Speaker 1: to be a very similar conversation this offseason.
- 26:23Speaker 4: Alonso has an opt out.
- 26:24Speaker 1: He's going to opt out as he should and explore
- 26:27Speaker 1: the market again. He wants to be a Met. The
- 26:29Speaker 1: Mets wanted to stay with the Mets. The question is
- 26:33Speaker 1: will they pay him what he wants, what he thinks
- 26:36Speaker 1: is appropriate. With his agent, Scott boris Now, Pete said
- 26:40Speaker 1: the other day after breaking the team's franchise home run record,
- 26:44Speaker 1: that it's on Steve Cohen and David Stearns, and I
- 26:47Speaker 1: know what he meant. He meant it's got to start
- 26:49Speaker 1: with them wanting him. But ultimately this is a negotiation
- 26:52Speaker 1: between the two parties. And what happened last year, it
- 26:56Speaker 1: dragged on and on and on because they could not
- 26:59Speaker 1: agree on Pete's future value, and it's.
- 27:02Speaker 4: Going to be very similar.
- 27:03Speaker 1: He's a year older now, and heaven forbid a player
- 27:07Speaker 1: turned thirty in this day and age, but that's what happens,
- 27:09Speaker 1: and teams look at that. And while he should be
- 27:12Speaker 1: a Met forever, the question is going to be how
- 27:15Speaker 1: much is that going to cost the Mets. If it's
- 27:17Speaker 1: going to cost them in Scott Boris's mind, I'm just
- 27:19Speaker 1: throwing this number out six years, two hundred and ten million.
- 27:23Speaker 4: It's thirty five a year. Mets are probably going to
- 27:25Speaker 4: say no.
- 27:26Speaker 1: If they can get to some lower number that both
- 27:29Speaker 1: sides find acceptable, Yeah, it'll happen, But I don't know
- 27:33Speaker 1: that it's going to be easy because the same dynamics
- 27:37Speaker 1: are in place.
- 27:38Speaker 3: Anything for a price, right, it just has to be
- 27:40Speaker 3: the right price point for both sides of the equation. Okay,
- 27:43Speaker 3: you have on Fox on Saturday, the Cardinals versus the Yankees.
- 27:48Speaker 3: I'm not certain that that one is a barn burner
- 27:51Speaker 3: in terms of a fourth place team going up against
- 27:53Speaker 3: a third place team in the New York Yankees. But
- 27:55Speaker 3: what are you hoping ken to see from this matchup
- 27:59Speaker 3: this upcoming Saturday.
- 28:01Speaker 1: I'm just really interested to see the Yankees and are
- 28:03Speaker 1: they going to come out of it. They had a
- 28:05Speaker 1: decent series against the Twins, winning two of three, but
- 28:09Speaker 1: they have to at some point somewhat like the Dodgers
- 28:12Speaker 1: turn it on again, and they've been unable to do that,
- 28:15Speaker 1: and maybe they will be unable to do that.
- 28:17Speaker 4: So that's what I'll be looking.
- 28:20Speaker 1: At and focusing on here, just where the Yankees are,
- 28:23Speaker 1: the way they're playing, how it's all coming together for them.
- 28:27Speaker 1: One guy we should mention, gian Carlos Stanton. It's kind
- 28:30Speaker 1: of amazing to me, Alana, how he's turned it around
- 28:33Speaker 1: both with his career in some respects and with the
- 28:37Speaker 1: fan base.
- 28:38Speaker 4: Suddenly he's appreciated in New York.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Anthony Baldi, Austin Wells and all the other beleaguered Yankees.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Aaron Boom, there's hope for you all.
- 28:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's amazing.
- 28:48Speaker 3: One day they want to send you to the moon,
- 28:50Speaker 3: the next day they're over having you over for Cannoli's.
- 28:52Speaker 2: That's gonna do it for us.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Here on Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal, do not forget that.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Foul Territory is next, Scott Broun. Of course he is
- 29:00Speaker 3: your host. He's going to be joined by aj Przinski,

- 29:06Speaker 3: stopping by as well. Dodger's Territory follows that myself with
- 29:09Speaker 3: Clint Psias and Kyle Glazier, and of course Ken is
- 29:12Speaker 3: back with a fresh Fair on Monday.
