- 0:46stories behind popular car brand logos you see on roads, in
- 0:50parking lots, and on TV commercials.
- 0:53We will look at where the shapes, letters, and colors come
- 0:57from and how they connect to real companies and their
- 1:00histories. So let's get on with today's
- 1:04episode. First, what is a logo?
- 1:16A logo is a special design that helps you recognize a company
- 1:20fast. It can be a picture, a shape,
- 1:24letters or a mix of all three. Companies choose logos to show
- 1:28their identity so people can spot them on a car grill, a
- 1:32steering wheel or a key fob. Think about times you have
- 1:36guessed a brand just from a small badge on a car.
- 1:40That is a logo doing its job. Let's start with Toyota.
- 1:43Toyota's logo has three ovals that overlap.
- 1:47Two ovals cross to form a shape that looks like AT and a bigger
- 1:52Oval surrounds them. The company explained that the
- 1:55design lets you trace out all the letters in the word Toyota
- 1:59inside the shapes. Did you know Toyota began as a
- 2:03maker of weaving looms before building cars?
- 2:06The logo we know today was introduced around the late 1980s
- 2:09to work well in print and on car metal.
- 2:13Next up is Ford. The Ford logo is a blue Oval
- 2:17with a curly old fashioned script that spells Ford.
- 2:21The writing style is based on an early designer signature from
- 2:25more than 100 years ago. The Oval shape helped the name
- 2:28stand out on car parts and dealership signs.
- 2:31Did you know? The Ford Oval has appeared in
- 2:34many shades of blue over time, but the idea stayed the same, so
- 2:38drivers could recognize it right away.
- 2:40Now take a look at Volkswagen. The VW badge shows AV sitting on
- 2:45top of AW, both inside a circle. The name Volkswagen is German
- 2:51and means people's car. Over the years, the logo has
- 2:55become cleaner and flatter, which makes it easy to read on
- 2:58screens and badges. Did you know the letters line up
- 3:01so neatly that the white spaces are carefully measured to look
- 3:05balanced on a car grill? Here is a star that many people
- 3:09know, Mercedes-Benz. The three pointed star stands
- 3:13for the company's goal to power machines on land, on water and
- 3:18in the air. It is simple, it is centered and
- 3:21it is easy to spot from far away.
- 3:23Did you know? Early versions of the star
- 3:25appeared on postcards sent by a company founder before it became
- 3:29the official emblem, now to BMW. The BMW roundel has a black ring
- 3:34with the letters BM and W, and a center with blue and white
- 3:40quarters. Those colors come from the flag
- 3:43of Bavaria, the region in Germany where the company began.
- 3:47Some people think it is a spinning propeller, but the
- 3:50official link is to the Bavarian colors.
- 3:53BMW did make engines for airplanes a long time ago, which
- 3:57helped that propeller idea spread.
- 4:04Audi's logo is also very clear. Four rings in a row.
- 4:09Each ring stands for one of the four companies that joined
- 4:12together to form Auto Union in the 1930s.
- 4:16That history is why the rings remain today.
- 4:19Did you know the rings have been shown in silver, Chrome, and
- 4:22black depending on the model and the year.
- 4:25Honda keeps it simple with a bold letter H.
- 4:28Before Honda made cars, it became famous for motorcycles.
- 4:33The strong block H works on a small motorcycle tank and on a
- 4:37large car grille, so it is flexible across products.
- 4:41Did you know Honda racing teams often use different colors
- 4:44around the H, but the basic letter shape stays the same?
- 4:48Hyundai has a slanted H inside an Oval.
- 4:52The company explains it as a stylized letter H for Hyundai.
- 4:56Many people also see it as two people shaking hands, which is a
- 5:00friendly idea about customers and the company agreeing.
- 5:04Both the clean letter shape and the handshake idea help people
- 5:07remember it. Did you know Hyundai is a South
- 5:10Korean brand that grew from building small cars to making
- 5:13electric vehicles and large SUVs?
- 5:16Nissan's modern logo shows the name Nissan across a circle
- 5:20outline. Earlier versions used a solid
- 5:23bar across a red circle. The round shape was easy to
- 5:26print on signs and badges. Did you know Nissan has updated
- 5:31the thickness of the lines in the logo to make it look sharp
- 5:34on digital screens? Subaru's logo shows 6 stars.
- 5:38This connects to the Pleiades star cluster that you can see in
- 5:41the night sky. The name Subaru is the Japanese
- 5:45word for the cluster. The six stars can also remind
- 5:48people of companies that came together under Fuji Heavy
- 5:51Industries, which later took on the Subaru name for its car
- 5:55brand. Did you know?
- 5:56The exact sizes of the stars in the badge are arranged on
- 5:59purpose to match real positions you can map in the sky.
- 6:08The Mazda symbol is AV shaped wing like M that points upward.
- 6:13It stands for the name Mazda and the company's aim for motion and
- 6:17progress. The current version first
- 6:19appeared in the 1990s and was refined for smoother curves.
- 6:24Did you know? Mazda's name connects to Ahora
- 6:27Mazda, a term from ancient culture, and also to the
- 6:31company's founder surname, Matsuda.
- 6:34Tesla's T logo looks like a simple letter, but it also
- 6:38represents the cross section of an electric motor part that fits
- 6:42the company's focus on electric cars.
- 6:45Did you know the company name honors Nikola Tesla, a real life
- 6:49inventor known for work with electricity and motors?
- 6:52Chevrolet uses a shape widely called the bow tie.
- 6:56The exact origin of the bow tie story is debated.
- 7:00Some say it came from a wallpaper pattern, others say it
- 7:03is a stylized cross and there are more ideas too.
- 7:07What is certain is that it has become one of the most
- 7:10recognized car marks in the world.
- 7:12Did you know the bow tie has been used in gold, blue, black
- 7:16and Chrome depending on the model and the era, here comes
- 7:19some quick questions to add new facts you might not have heard
- 7:23yet. Which car brands logo is 3 red
- 7:26diamonds forming a triangle? Mitsubishi.
- 7:33The name combines 2 Japanese words that mean three and
- 7:36diamond, and the logo reflects that history clearly.
- 7:40Yes or no? Is the company that makes MINI
- 7:44part of BMW Group today? Yes, BMW owns the MINI brand and
- 7:52builds MINI cars in several countries, including the United
- 7:56Kingdom. Which country's flag inspired
- 8:04the red circle? In early Nissan signs outside
- 8:07some dealerships Japan, the red circle refers to the sun disk on
- 8:15Japan's national flag, and older Nissan signage used that idea
- 8:20before the current simplified batch.
- 8:22Yes or no? Is Subaru also a Japanese word
- 8:26that means to unite or come together?
- 8:31Yes. Besides naming a star cluster,
- 8:35Subaru can mean to unite, which matches the company's origin
- 8:39story about several firms joining.
- 8:42Which car company uses a lightning bolt inside a circle
- 8:45on many of its badges? Opal Opal is a German brand and
- 8:54it's bolt symbol has been part of its identity for decades.
- 8:57Before we wrap up, here are a few tips for spotting logo
- 9:01details in the real world. Look at how shapes line up the V
- 9:06over West in Volkswagen, the balanced 3 point star of
- 9:09Mercedes-Benz and the equal sized rings of Audi.
- 9:13Notice how letters are drawn, the curl in Ford script, the
- 9:17clean block H of Honda, and the simple T of Tesla.
- 9:21Check how colors are used, Toyota's Chrome against red or
- 9:25body color, Nissan's thin outlines, and BMW's blue and
- 9:30white center. Watch for history hints, Subarus
- 9:33stars from the sky, Mitsubishi's family Crest, diamonds and Opals
- 9:38lightning that suggests energy. Let's do a fast recap.
- 9:42Logos are quick to read signs that help you recognize Toyota's
- 9:47three ovals form AT and can outline the letters in Toyota.
- 9:52Ford uses a blue Oval with classic script.
- 9:56Volkswagen stacks AV and W inside a circle.
- 10:00Mercedes-Benz has a star for land, water and air.
- 10:05BMW's blue and white center reflects Bavaria.
- 10:09Audi's four rings come from four companies.
- 10:11Joining Honda's strong H works on motorcycles and cars.
- 10:16Hyundai's slanted H is a stylized letter that many people
- 10:20read as a handshake. Nissan's modern badge is a name
- 10:24across a circle outline, with older versions using a red sun
- 10:28idea. Subaru shows six stars linked to
- 10:32the Pleiades and a story of companies uniting.
- 10:35Mazda's M suggests motion and growth.
- 10:39Tesla's T also matches a motor cross section.
- 10:43Chevrolet's bow tie remains a mystery in origin stories but is
- 10:47very recognizable along the way. You also learned that Mitsubishi
- 10:52uses 3 red diamonds. Mini is owned by BMW.
- 10:56The red sun idea connects to Japan for Nissan signage, Subaru
- 11:00can mean to unite and Opal uses a lightning bolt.
- 11:09The next time you walk through a parking lot or a ride in the
- 11:12back seat, try spotting these details.
- 11:15You will know the shapes, the letters, and the stories behind
- 11:18them. That is it for today's logo tour
- 11:21and now you can read a car badge like a pro.
