- 0:00Speaker 1: Third Nephi, Chapters one through four. Third Nephi Chapter one.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Now it came to pass that the ninety and first
- 0:07Speaker 1: year had passed away, and it was six hundred years
- 0:10Speaker 1: from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem. And it was
- 0:13Speaker 1: in the year that Laconius was the chief judge and
- 0:16Speaker 1: governor over the land, and Nephi, the son of Helaman,
- 0:21Speaker 1: had departed out of the land of Zarahemla, giving charge
- 0:24Speaker 1: unto his son Nephi, who was his eldest son, concerning
- 0:28Speaker 1: the plates of brass, and all the records which had
- 0:31Speaker 1: been kept, and all those things which had been kept
- 0:34Speaker 1: sacred from the departure of Lehi out of Jerusalem. Then
- 0:38Speaker 1: he departed out of the land, and whither he went
- 0:40Speaker 1: no man knoweth, and his son Nephi to keep the
- 0:44Speaker 1: records in his stead, Yea, the records of this people.
- 0:48Speaker 1: And it came to pass that in the commencement of
- 0:50Speaker 1: the ninety and second year, behold the prophecies of the
- 0:54Speaker 1: prophets began to be fulfilled more fully, for there began
- 0:58Speaker 1: to be greater signs, in greater miracles wrought among the people.
- 1:02Speaker 1: But there were some who began to say that the
- 1:05Speaker 1: time was passed for the words to be fulfilled which
- 1:07Speaker 1: were spoken by Samuel the Lamanite, and they began to
- 1:11Speaker 1: rejoice over their brethren, saying, behold, the time is passed,
- 1:15Speaker 1: and the words of Samuel are not fulfilled. Therefore your
- 1:18Speaker 1: joy and your faith concerning this thing hath been vain.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they did make a
- 1:25Speaker 1: great uproar throughout the land, and the people who believed
- 1:29Speaker 1: began to be very sorrowful, lest by any means those
- 1:33Speaker 1: things which had been spoken might not come to pass.
- 1:36Speaker 1: But behold, they did watch steadfastly for that day and
- 1:41Speaker 1: that night and that day, which should be as one
- 1:45Speaker 1: day as if there were no night, that they might
- 1:48Speaker 1: know that their faith had not been vain. Now it
- 1:53Speaker 1: came to pass that there was a day set apart
- 1:56Speaker 1: by the unbelievers, that all those who believed in those
- 1:59Speaker 1: tradition should be put to death, except the sign should
- 2:03Speaker 1: come to pass which had been given by Samuel the Prophet.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Now it came to pass that when Nephi, the son
- 2:10Speaker 1: of Nephi, saw this wickedness of his people, his heart
- 2:15Speaker 1: was exceedingly sorrowful. And it came to pass that he
- 2:19Speaker 1: went out and bowed himself down upon the earth, and
- 2:22Speaker 1: cried mightily to his God in behalf of his people, yea,
- 2:26Speaker 1: those who were about to be destroyed because of their
- 2:29Speaker 1: faith in the tradition of their fathers. And it came
- 2:32Speaker 1: to pass that he cried mightily unto the Lord all
- 2:36Speaker 1: that day. And behold the voice of the Lord came
- 2:39Speaker 1: unto him, saying, lift up your head and be of
- 2:43Speaker 1: good cheer, For behold, the time is at hand, and
- 2:47Speaker 1: on this night shall the sign be given. And on
- 2:51Speaker 1: the morrow come I into the world, to show into
- 2:54Speaker 1: the world that I will fulfill all that which I
- 2:57Speaker 1: have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my
- 3:00Speaker 1: holy prophets. Behold, I come unto my own to fulfill
- 3:04Speaker 1: all things which I have made known unto the children
- 3:07Speaker 1: of men from the foundation of the world, and to
- 3:10Speaker 1: do the will both of the Father and of the
- 3:14Speaker 1: Son of the Father, because of Me and of the Son,
- 3:17Speaker 1: because of my flesh. And behold, the time is at hand,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and this night shall the sign be given. And it
- 3:23Speaker 1: came to pass that the words which came unto Nephi
- 3:26Speaker 1: were fulfilled according as they had been spoken. For behold,
- 3:32Speaker 1: at the going down of the sun, there was no darkness,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and the people began to be astonished because there was
- 3:38Speaker 1: no darkness when the night came, and there were many
- 3:42Speaker 1: who had not believed the words of the prophets, who
- 3:45Speaker 1: fell to the earth and became as if they were dead,
- 3:49Speaker 1: for they knew that the great plan of destruction which
- 3:52Speaker 1: they had laid for those who believed in the words
- 3:54Speaker 1: of the prophets had been frustrated, for the sign which
- 3:59Speaker 1: had been given was already at hand, and they began
- 4:03Speaker 1: to know that the Son of God must shortly appear.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yea in fine all the people upon the face of
- 4:10Speaker 1: the whole earth, from the west to the east, both
- 4:14Speaker 1: in the land north and in the land south, were
- 4:17Speaker 1: so exceedingly astonished that they fell to the earth, for
- 4:21Speaker 1: they knew that the prophets had testified of these things
- 4:24Speaker 1: for many years, and that the sign which had been
- 4:27Speaker 1: given was already at hand. And they began to fear
- 4:31Speaker 1: because of their iniquity and their unbelief. And it came
- 4:36Speaker 1: to pass that there was no darkness in all that night,
- 4:39Speaker 1: but it was as light as though it was mid day.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the sun did rise
- 4:46Speaker 1: in the morning again. According to its proper order, and
- 4:51Speaker 1: they knew that it was the day that the Lord
- 4:53Speaker 1: should be born because of the sign which had been given.
- 4:57Speaker 1: And it had come to pass, yea all things, every
- 5:01Speaker 1: whit according to the words of the prophets. And it
- 5:05Speaker 1: came to pass also that a new star did appear
- 5:08Speaker 1: according to the word. And it came to pass that
- 5:12Speaker 1: from this time forth there began to be lyings sent
- 5:15Speaker 1: forth among the people by Satan to harden their hearts,
- 5:19Speaker 1: to the intent that they might not believe in those
- 5:22Speaker 1: signs and wonders which they had seen. But notwithstanding these
- 5:27Speaker 1: lyings and deceivings, the more part of the people did
- 5:30Speaker 1: believe and were converted unto the Lord. And it came
- 5:34Speaker 1: to pass that Nephi went forth among the people, and
- 5:37Speaker 1: also many others baptizing unto repentance, in the which there
- 5:41Speaker 1: was a great remission of sins. And thus the people
- 5:45Speaker 1: began again to have peace in the land, and there
- 5:49Speaker 1: were no contentions, save it were a few that began
- 5:52Speaker 1: to preach endeavoring to prove by the scriptures that it
- 5:55Speaker 1: was no more expedient to observe the law of Moses.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Now in this thing they did er, having not understood
- 6:02Speaker 1: the scriptures. But it came to pass that they soon
- 6:06Speaker 1: became converted and were convinced of the error which they
- 6:09Speaker 1: were in. For it was made known unto them that
- 6:12Speaker 1: the law was not yet fulfilled, and that it must
- 6:16Speaker 1: be fulfilled in every whit. Yea, the word came unto
- 6:20Speaker 1: them that it must be fulfilled. Yea, that one jot
- 6:24Speaker 1: or tittle should not pass away till it should all
- 6:27Speaker 1: be fulfilled. Therefore, in this same year were they brought
- 6:32Speaker 1: to a knowledge of their error, and did confess their faults.
- 6:36Speaker 1: And thus the ninety and second year did pass away,
- 6:39Speaker 1: bringing glad tidings unto the people. Because of the signs
- 6:42Speaker 1: which did come to pass according to the words of
- 6:45Speaker 1: the prophecy of all the holy prophets. Then it came
- 6:49Speaker 1: to pass that the ninety and third year did also
- 6:51Speaker 1: pass away in peace, save it were for the Gadyatin
- 6:55Speaker 1: robbers who dwelt upon the mountains, who did infest the land,
- 7:00Speaker 1: For so strong were their holds in their secret places
- 7:03Speaker 1: that the people could not overpower them. Therefore they did
- 7:07Speaker 1: commit many murders and did do much slaughter among the people.
- 7:12Speaker 1: And it came to pass that in the ninety and
- 7:14Speaker 1: fourth year, they began to increase in great degree, because
- 7:18Speaker 1: there were many dissenters of the Nephites who did flee
- 7:20Speaker 1: unto them, which did cause much sorrow unto those Nephyites
- 7:24Speaker 1: who did remain in the land. And there was also
- 7:27Speaker 1: a cause of much sorrow among the Lamanites, for behold,
- 7:31Speaker 1: they had many children who did grow up and began
- 7:33Speaker 1: to whack strong in years that they became for themselves,
- 7:38Speaker 1: and were led away by some who were Zoramites by
- 7:41Speaker 1: their lyings and their flattering words, to join those gadyantin robbers.
- 7:47Speaker 1: And thus were the Lamanites afflicted also, and began to
- 7:50Speaker 1: decrease as to their faith and righteousness because of the
- 7:54Speaker 1: wickedness of the rising generation Third Nephi, Chapter two. And
- 8:00Speaker 1: it came to pass that thus passed away the ninety
- 8:03Speaker 1: and fifth year also, and the people began to forget
- 8:07Speaker 1: those signs and wonders which they had heard, and began
- 8:10Speaker 1: to be less and less astonished at a sign or
- 8:12Speaker 1: a wonder from heaven, insomuch that they began to be
- 8:16Speaker 1: hard in their hearts and blind in their minds, and
- 8:19Speaker 1: begin to disbelieve all which they had heard and seen.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Imagining up some vain thing in their hearts, that it
- 8:27Speaker 1: was wrought by men and by the power of the devil,
- 8:30Speaker 1: to lead away and deceive the hearts of the people.
- 8:33Speaker 1: And thus did Satan get possession of the hearts of
- 8:37Speaker 1: the people again, insomuch that he did blind their eyes
- 8:40Speaker 1: and lead them away to believe that the doctrine of
- 8:43Speaker 1: Christ was a foolish and a vain thing. And it
- 8:47Speaker 1: came to pass that the people began to wax strong
- 8:50Speaker 1: in wickedness and abominations, and they did not believe that
- 8:54Speaker 1: there should be any more signs or wonders given. And
- 8:57Speaker 1: Satan did go about leading away the hearts of the people,
- 9:02Speaker 1: tempting them and causing them that they should do great
- 9:05Speaker 1: wickedness in the land. And thus did pass away. The
- 9:09Speaker 1: ninety and sixth year, and also the ninety and seventh year,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and also the ninety and eighth year, and also the
- 9:17Speaker 1: ninety and ninth year, and also an hundred years had
- 9:21Speaker 1: passed away since the days of Mosiah, who was king
- 9:24Speaker 1: over the people of the Nephites, And six hundred and
- 9:28Speaker 1: nine years had passed away since Lehi left Jerusalem, and
- 9:32Speaker 1: nine years had passed away from the time when the
- 9:35Speaker 1: sign was given, which was spoken of by the prophets,
- 9:39Speaker 1: that Christ should come into the world. Now the Nephites
- 9:43Speaker 1: began to reckon their time from this period when the
- 9:46Speaker 1: sign was given, or from the coming of Christ. Therefore
- 9:51Speaker 1: nine years had passed away, and Nephi, who was the
- 9:55Speaker 1: father of Nephi, who had the charge of the records,
- 9:58Speaker 1: did not return to the land and of Zarahemla, and
- 10:01Speaker 1: could nowhere be found in all the land. And it
- 10:04Speaker 1: came to pass that the people did still remain in wickedness,
- 10:09Speaker 1: notwithstanding the much preaching and prophesying which was sent among them,
- 10:14Speaker 1: and thus passed away. The tenth year also and the
- 10:18Speaker 1: eleventh year also passed away in iniquity, and it came
- 10:22Speaker 1: to pass in the thirteenth year there began to be
- 10:25Speaker 1: wars and contentions throughout all the land. For the Gadyatin
- 10:29Speaker 1: robbers had become so numerous, and did slay so many
- 10:33Speaker 1: of the people, and did lay waste so many cities,
- 10:38Speaker 1: and had spread so much death and carnage throughout the land,
- 10:42Speaker 1: that it became expedient that all the people, both the
- 10:45Speaker 1: Nephites and the Lamanites, should take up arms against them. Therefore,
- 10:51Speaker 1: all the Lamanites who had become converted unto the Lord
- 10:54Speaker 1: did unite with their brethren, the Nephites, and were compelled
- 10:58Speaker 1: for the safety of their lives and their women and
- 11:01Speaker 1: their children to take up arms against those gadyantine robbers Yea,
- 11:06Speaker 1: and also to maintain their rights and the privileges of
- 11:09Speaker 1: their church and of their worship, and their freedom and
- 11:13Speaker 1: their liberty. And it came to pass that before this
- 11:16Speaker 1: thirteenth year had passed away, the Nephites were threatened with
- 11:21Speaker 1: utter destruction because of this war, which had become exceedingly sore.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And it came to pass that those Lamanites who had
- 11:29Speaker 1: united with the Nephites were numbered among the Nephites, and
- 11:34Speaker 1: their curse was taken from them, and their skin became white,
- 11:38Speaker 1: likened to the Nephites, and their young men and their
- 11:41Speaker 1: daughters became exceedingly fair, and they were numbered among the
- 11:46Speaker 1: Nephites and were called Nephytes. And thus ended the thirteenth year,
- 11:52Speaker 1: and it came to pass in the commencement of the
- 11:54Speaker 1: fourteenth year the war between the robbers and the people
- 11:58Speaker 1: of Nephi did to continue, and had become exceedingly sore. Nevertheless,
- 12:04Speaker 1: the people of Nephi did gain some advantage of the
- 12:07Speaker 1: robbers in so much that they did drive them back
- 12:10Speaker 1: out of their lands, into the mountains and into their
- 12:14Speaker 1: secret places. And thus ended the fourteenth year. And in
- 12:19Speaker 1: the fifteenth year they did come forth against the people
- 12:22Speaker 1: of Nephi. And because of the wickedness of the people
- 12:26Speaker 1: of Nephi and their many contentions and dissensions, the gadientin
- 12:31Speaker 1: robbers did gain many advantages over them, and thus ended
- 12:37Speaker 1: the fifteenth year. And thus were the people in a
- 12:41Speaker 1: state of many afflictions, and the sword of destruction did
- 12:45Speaker 1: hang over them insomuch that they were about to be
- 12:48Speaker 1: smitten down by it. And this because of their iniquity
- 12:54Speaker 1: Third Nephi, Chapter three. And now it came to pass
- 12:58Speaker 1: that in the sixteenth year, from the coming of Christ, Laconius,
- 13:01Speaker 1: the governor of the land, received an epistle from the
- 13:04Speaker 1: leader and the governor of this band of robbers. And
- 13:07Speaker 1: these were the words which were written, saying, Laconius, most
- 13:12Speaker 1: noble and chief governor of the land. Behold, I write
- 13:15Speaker 1: this epistle unto you and to give unto you exceedingly
- 13:18Speaker 1: great praise because of your firmness and also the firmness
- 13:22Speaker 1: of your people in maintaining that which He supposed to
- 13:25Speaker 1: be your right and liberty. Yea ye do stand well
- 13:29Speaker 1: as if ye were supported by the hand of a God,
- 13:32Speaker 1: in the defense of your liberty and your property and
- 13:35Speaker 1: your country, or that which ye do call so. And
- 13:39Speaker 1: it seemeth a pity to me, most noble Laconius, that
- 13:42Speaker 1: ye should be so foolish and vain as to suppose
- 13:45Speaker 1: that ye can stand against so many brave men who
- 13:48Speaker 1: are at my command, who do now at this time
- 13:51Speaker 1: stand in their arms, and do await with great anxiety
- 13:55Speaker 1: for the word go down upon the nephytes and destroy them,
- 13:59Speaker 1: and knowing of their unconquerable spirit, having proved them in
- 14:03Speaker 1: the field of battle, and knowing of their everlasting hatred
- 14:07Speaker 1: towards you because of the many wrongs which ye have
- 14:09Speaker 1: done unto them. Therefore, if they should come down against you,
- 14:14Speaker 1: they would visit you with utter destruction. Therefore I have
- 14:17Speaker 1: written this epistle, sealing it with mine own hand, feeling
- 14:20Speaker 1: for your welfare, because of your firmness and that which
- 14:23Speaker 1: you believed to be right and your noble spirit in
- 14:25Speaker 1: the field of battle. Therefore I write unto you, desiring
- 14:29Speaker 1: that ye would yield up unto this my people, your cities,
- 14:33Speaker 1: your lands, and your possessions, rather than that they should
- 14:37Speaker 1: visit you with the sword and that destruction should come
- 14:40Speaker 1: upon you, or in other words, yield up yourselves unto us,
- 14:44Speaker 1: and unite with us, and become acquainted with our secret works,
- 14:48Speaker 1: and become our brethren, that ye may be like unto us,
- 14:51Speaker 1: not our slaves, but our brethren and partners of all
- 14:55Speaker 1: our substance. And behold, I swear unto you, if ye
- 14:58Speaker 1: will do this with oath, ye shall not be destroyed.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But if ye will not do this, I swear unto
- 15:05Speaker 1: you with an oath that on the morrow month I
- 15:07Speaker 1: will command that my armies shall come down against you,
- 15:11Speaker 1: and they shall not stay their hand, and shall spare not,
- 15:15Speaker 1: but shall slay you, and shall let fall the sword
- 15:18Speaker 1: upon you even until ye shall become extinct. And behold,
- 15:21Speaker 1: I am Gideon, hi, and I am the governor of
- 15:24Speaker 1: this the secret Society of Gadianton which society and the
- 15:28Speaker 1: works thereof I know to be good, and they are
- 15:31Speaker 1: of ancient date, and they have been handed down unto us.
- 15:35Speaker 1: And I write this epistle unto you Laconius, and I
- 15:37Speaker 1: hope that ye will deliver up your lands and your
- 15:40Speaker 1: possessions without the shedding of blood, that this my people
- 15:44Speaker 1: may recover their rights and government, who have descended away
- 15:47Speaker 1: from you because of your wickedness in retaining from them
- 15:49Speaker 1: their rights of government. And except ye do this, I
- 15:52Speaker 1: will avenge their wrongs. I am Gideon Hi, and now
- 15:56Speaker 1: I came to pass. When Laconius received this epistle, he
- 16:00Speaker 1: was exceedingly astonished because of the boldness of Gideon Hi
- 16:04Speaker 1: demanding the possession of the land of the Nephites, and
- 16:08Speaker 1: also of threatening the people and avenging the wrongs of
- 16:12Speaker 1: those who had received no wrong, save it were they
- 16:14Speaker 1: had wronged themselves by dissenting away unto those wicked and
- 16:17Speaker 1: abominable robbers. Now behold this. Laconius, the governor, was a
- 16:22Speaker 1: just man and could not be frightened by the demands
- 16:26Speaker 1: and the threatenings of a robber. Therefore he did not
- 16:30Speaker 1: hearken to the epistle of Gideon Hi, the governor of
- 16:33Speaker 1: the robbers. But he had cause that his people should
- 16:36Speaker 1: cry into the Lord for strength against the time that
- 16:39Speaker 1: the robbers should come down against them. Yea, he sent
- 16:41Speaker 1: a proclamation among all the people, that they should gather
- 16:44Speaker 1: together their women and their children, their flocks, and their herds,
- 16:49Speaker 1: and all their substance, save it were their land unto
- 16:53Speaker 1: one place. And he caused that fortifications should be built
- 16:56Speaker 1: round about them, and the strength thereof should be exceedingly great.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And he caused that armies, both of the Nephites and
- 17:04Speaker 1: of the Lamanites, or of all them who were numbered
- 17:07Speaker 1: among the Nephytes, should be placed as guards round about,
- 17:11Speaker 1: to watch them and to guard them from the robbers
- 17:14Speaker 1: day and night. Yea, he said unto them, as the
- 17:18Speaker 1: Lord liveth, except ye repent of all your iniquities and
- 17:21Speaker 1: cry unto the Lord, ye will in no wise be
- 17:24Speaker 1: delivered out of the hands of those gadiant and robbers.
- 17:27Speaker 1: And so great and marvelous were the words and prophecies
- 17:30Speaker 1: of Laconius, that they did cause fear to come upon
- 17:34Speaker 1: all the people, and they did exert themselves in their
- 17:37Speaker 1: might to do according to the words of Laconius. And
- 17:40Speaker 1: it came to pass that Laconius did appoint chief captains
- 17:44Speaker 1: over all the armies of the Nephites, to command them
- 17:48Speaker 1: at the time that the robbers should come down out
- 17:50Speaker 1: of the wilderness against them. Now, the chiefest among all
- 17:54Speaker 1: the chief captains, and the great commander of the armies
- 17:58Speaker 1: of the Nephyites, was a pointed and his name was Gidgadonai.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Now it was the custom among all the Nephites to
- 18:07Speaker 1: appoint for their chief captains, save it were in their
- 18:10Speaker 1: times of wickedness, someone that had the spirit of revelation
- 18:15Speaker 1: and also prophecy. Therefore, this Gidgadonai, was a great prophet
- 18:19Speaker 1: among them, as also was the chief judge. Now the
- 18:23Speaker 1: people said, unto Gidgadonai, pray unto the Lord, and let
- 18:26Speaker 1: us go up unto the mountains and into the wilderness,
- 18:29Speaker 1: that we may fall upon the robbers and destroy them
- 18:31Speaker 1: in their own lands. But Gidgadonai said, unto them, the
- 18:35Speaker 1: Lord forbid, for if we should go against them, the
- 18:37Speaker 1: Lord would deliver us into their hands. Therefore, we will
- 18:41Speaker 1: prepare ourselves in the center of our lands, and we
- 18:44Speaker 1: will gather all our armies together, and we will not
- 18:48Speaker 1: go against them, but we will wait till they shall
- 18:51Speaker 1: come against us. Therefore, as the Lord liveth, if we
- 18:55Speaker 1: do this, he will deliver them into our hands. It
- 19:00Speaker 1: came to pass in the seventeenth year. In the latter
- 19:03Speaker 1: end of the year, the proclamation of Laconius had gone
- 19:06Speaker 1: forth throughout all the face of the land, and they
- 19:10Speaker 1: had taken their horses and their chariots, and their cattle,
- 19:14Speaker 1: and all their flocks, and their herds, and their grain,
- 19:18Speaker 1: and all their substance, and did march forth by thousands
- 19:23Speaker 1: and by tens of thousands, until they had all gone
- 19:26Speaker 1: forth to the place which had been appointed that they
- 19:30Speaker 1: should gather themselves together to defend themselves against their enemies.
- 19:36Speaker 1: And the land which was appointed was the land of Zarahemla,
- 19:39Speaker 1: and the land which was between the land Zarahemla and
- 19:42Speaker 1: the land Bountiful yea to the line which was between
- 19:45Speaker 1: the land Bountiful and the land Desolation. And there were
- 19:50Speaker 1: a great many thousand people who were called nephytes, who
- 19:54Speaker 1: did gather themselves together in this land. Now Laconius did
- 19:59Speaker 1: cause that they should gather themselves together in the land southward,
- 20:02Speaker 1: because of the great curse which was upon the land northward.
- 20:06Speaker 1: And they did fortify themselves against their enemies. And they
- 20:10Speaker 1: did dwell in one land and in one body, and
- 20:13Speaker 1: they did fear the words which had been spoken by
- 20:16Speaker 1: Laconius insomuch that they did repent of all their sins,
- 20:20Speaker 1: and they did put up their prayers unto the Lord
- 20:22Speaker 1: their God, that he would deliver them in the time
- 20:26Speaker 1: that their enemies should come down against them to battle.
- 20:30Speaker 1: And they were exceedingly sorrowful because of their enemies. And
- 20:35Speaker 1: Gidgadoni did cause that they should make weapons of war
- 20:38Speaker 1: of every kind, and they should be strong with armor,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and with shields, and with bucklers, after the manner of
- 20:46Speaker 1: his instruction Third Nephi, Chapter four. And it came to
- 20:52Speaker 1: pass that in the latter end of the eighteenth year,
- 20:55Speaker 1: those armies of robbers had prepared for battle, and began
- 20:59Speaker 1: to come down and to sally forth from the hills
- 21:02Speaker 1: and out of the mountains in the wilderness and their
- 21:04Speaker 1: strongholds in their secret places, and began to take possession
- 21:09Speaker 1: of the lands, both which were in the land south
- 21:12Speaker 1: and which were in the land north, and began to
- 21:15Speaker 1: take possession of all the lands which had been deserted
- 21:17Speaker 1: by the Nephites, and the cities which had been left desolate.
- 21:22Speaker 1: But behold, there were no beasts nor wild game in
- 21:25Speaker 1: those lands which had been deserted by the Nephites, and
- 21:28Speaker 1: there was no game for the robbers, save it were
- 21:30Speaker 1: in the wilderness. And the robbers could not exist save
- 21:34Speaker 1: it were in the wilderness for the want of food.
- 21:36Speaker 1: For the Nephites had left their lands desolate, and had
- 21:40Speaker 1: gathered their flocks and their herds and all their substance,
- 21:43Speaker 1: and they were in one body. Therefore there was no
- 21:47Speaker 1: chance for the robbers to plunder and to obtain food,
- 21:49Speaker 1: save it were to come up in open battle against
- 21:53Speaker 1: the Nephites, and the Nephites, being in one body, and
- 21:56Speaker 1: having so great a number, and having reserved for themselves
- 22:00Speaker 1: visions and horses and cattle and flocks of every kind,
- 22:03Speaker 1: that they might subsist for the space of seven years,
- 22:07Speaker 1: in which time they did hope to destroy the robbers
- 22:09Speaker 1: from off the face of the land. And thus the
- 22:12Speaker 1: eighteenth year did pass away, and it came to pass
- 22:16Speaker 1: that in the nineteenth year Gideonhai found that it was
- 22:19Speaker 1: expedient that he should go up to battle against the Nephites,
- 22:23Speaker 1: for there was no way that they could subsist, save
- 22:26Speaker 1: it were to plunder and rob and murder, and they
- 22:30Speaker 1: durst not spread themselves upon the face of the land,
- 22:33Speaker 1: insomuch that they could raise grain, lest the Nephyites should
- 22:37Speaker 1: come upon them and slay them. Therefore, Gideonhai gave commandment
- 22:42Speaker 1: unto his armies that in this year they should go
- 22:45Speaker 1: up to battle against the Nephites. And it came to
- 22:48Speaker 1: pass that they did come up to battle, And it
- 22:51Speaker 1: was in the sixth month. And behold, great and terrible
- 22:56Speaker 1: was the day that they did come up to battle.
- 22:58Speaker 1: For they were girded about after the manner of robbers,
- 23:01Speaker 1: and they had a lamb skin about their loins, and
- 23:05Speaker 1: they were dyed in blood, and their heads were shorn,
- 23:09Speaker 1: and they had head plates upon them. And great and
- 23:13Speaker 1: terrible was the appearance of the armies of Gadeonhi, because
- 23:16Speaker 1: of their armor, and because of their being died in blood.
- 23:20Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the armies of the Nephites,
- 23:23Speaker 1: when they saw the appearance of the army of Gideonhai,
- 23:26Speaker 1: had all fallen to the earth and had lift their
- 23:30Speaker 1: cries to the Lord their god, that he would spare
- 23:32Speaker 1: them and deliver them out of the hands of their enemies.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And it came to pass that when the armies of
- 23:38Speaker 1: Gideonhai saw this, they began to shout with a loud voice,
- 23:43Speaker 1: because of their joy, for they had supposed that the
- 23:45Speaker 1: Nephites had fallen with fear because of the terror of
- 23:48Speaker 1: their armies. But in this thing they were disappointed, for
- 23:53Speaker 1: the Nephites did not fear them, but they did fear
- 23:56Speaker 1: their God, and did supplicate him for protection. Therefore, when
- 24:00Speaker 1: the armies of Gideonhai did rush upon them, they were
- 24:04Speaker 1: prepared to meet them. Yea, in the strength of the Lord,
- 24:08Speaker 1: they did receive them, and the battle commenced in this
- 24:11Speaker 1: the sixth month. And great and terrible was the battle
- 24:15Speaker 1: thereof Yea. Great and terrible was the slaughter thereof insomuch
- 24:19Speaker 1: that there never was known so great a slaughter among
- 24:23Speaker 1: all the people of Lehi since he left Jerusalem. And
- 24:27Speaker 1: notwithstanding the threatenings and the oaths which Gideonhai had made behold,
- 24:32Speaker 1: the Nephites did beat them, insomuch that they did fall
- 24:35Speaker 1: back from before them. And it came to pass that
- 24:40Speaker 1: Gidgadonai commanded that his armies should pursue them as far
- 24:43Speaker 1: as the borders of the wilderness, and that they should
- 24:46Speaker 1: not spare any that should fall into their hands by
- 24:49Speaker 1: the way. And thus they did pursue them and did
- 24:53Speaker 1: slay them to the borders of the wilderness, even until
- 24:56Speaker 1: they had fulfilled the commandment of Gidgadona. And it came
- 25:01Speaker 1: to pass that Gideonhai, who had stood and fought with boldness,
- 25:06Speaker 1: was pursued as he fled, and being weary because of
- 25:10Speaker 1: his much fighting, he was overtaken and slain. And thus
- 25:15Speaker 1: was the end of Gideonhi the Robber. And it came
- 25:19Speaker 1: to pass that the armies of the Nephiites did return
- 25:22Speaker 1: again to their place of security. And it came to
- 25:25Speaker 1: pass that this nineteenth year did pass away, and the
- 25:29Speaker 1: robbers did not come again to battle. Neither did they
- 25:32Speaker 1: come again in the twentieth year, And in the twenty
- 25:36Speaker 1: and first year they did not come up to battle,
- 25:39Speaker 1: but they came up on all sides till lay siege
- 25:42Speaker 1: round about the people of Nephi. For they did suppose
- 25:45Speaker 1: that if they should cut off the people of Nephi
- 25:48Speaker 1: from their lands, and should hem them in on every side,
- 25:52Speaker 1: and if they should cut them off from all their
- 25:54Speaker 1: outward privileges, that they could cause them to yield themselves
- 25:58Speaker 1: up according to their wishes. Now they had appointed unto
- 26:02Speaker 1: themselves another leader whose name was zem Nariha Therefore it
- 26:08Speaker 1: was zem Nariha that did cause that this siege should
- 26:10Speaker 1: take place. But behold, this was an advantage to the Nephites,
- 26:15Speaker 1: for it was impossible for the Robbers to lay siege
- 26:18Speaker 1: sufficiently long to have any effect upon the Nephites, because
- 26:21Speaker 1: of their much provision which they had laid up in store,
- 26:25Speaker 1: and because of the scantiness of provisions among the robbers,
- 26:28Speaker 1: For behold, they had nothing save it were meat for
- 26:30Speaker 1: their subsistence, which meet they did obtain in the wilderness.
- 26:35Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the wild game became
- 26:37Speaker 1: scarce in the wilderness insomuch that the robbers were about
- 26:40Speaker 1: to perish with hunger, and the Nephites were continually marching
- 26:45Speaker 1: out by day and by night, and falling upon their armies,
- 26:49Speaker 1: cutting them off by thousands and by tens of thousands.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And thus it became the desire of the people of
- 26:57Speaker 1: Zemnariha to withdraw from their design because of the great
- 27:00Speaker 1: destruction which came upon them by night and by day.
- 27:05Speaker 1: And it came to pass that zem Naraiha did give
- 27:07Speaker 1: command unto his people that they should withdraw themselves from
- 27:11Speaker 1: the siege and march into the furthermost parts of the
- 27:14Speaker 1: land northward. And now Gidgadonai, being aware of their design
- 27:20Speaker 1: and knowing of their weakness because of the want of
- 27:22Speaker 1: food and the great slaughter which had been made among them,
- 27:26Speaker 1: therefore he did send out his armies in the night time,
- 27:29Speaker 1: and did cut off the way of their retreat, and
- 27:31Speaker 1: did place his armies in the way of their retreat.
- 27:34Speaker 1: And this did they do in the night time, and
- 27:37Speaker 1: got on their march beyond the robbers, so that on
- 27:40Speaker 1: the morrow, when the robbers began their march, they were
- 27:43Speaker 1: met by the armies of the Nephites, both in the
- 27:45Speaker 1: front and in the rear. And the robbers who were
- 27:48Speaker 1: on the south were also cut off in their places
- 27:51Speaker 1: of retreat. And all these things were done by command
- 27:54Speaker 1: of Gidgadonae. And there were many thousands who did yield
- 27:58Speaker 1: themselves up prisoners unto the Nephites, and the remainder of
- 28:02Speaker 1: them were slain, and their leaders, Zevnarihah was taken and
- 28:06Speaker 1: hanged upon a tree yea even upon the top thereof
- 28:10Speaker 1: until he was dead. And when they had hanged him
- 28:13Speaker 1: until he was dead, they did fell the tree to
- 28:16Speaker 1: the earth and did cry with a loud voice, saying,
- 28:20Speaker 1: may the Lord preserve his people in righteousness and in
- 28:23Speaker 1: holiness of heart, that they may cause to be felled
- 28:27Speaker 1: to the earth all who shall seek to slay them
- 28:30Speaker 1: because of power and secret combinations, even as this man
- 28:34Speaker 1: hath been felled to the earth. And they did rejoice
- 28:38Speaker 1: and cry again with one voice, saying, may the God
- 28:42Speaker 1: of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God
- 28:45Speaker 1: of Jacob protect this people in righteousness, so long as
- 28:48Speaker 1: they shall call on the name of their God for protection.
- 28:53Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they did break forth
- 28:56Speaker 1: all as one in singing and praising their God for
- 28:59Speaker 1: them the great thing which He had done for them,
- 29:02Speaker 1: in preserving them from falling into the hands of their enemies. Yea,
- 29:07Speaker 1: they did cry Hosanna to the Most High God. And
- 29:10Speaker 1: they did cry, blessed be the name of the Lord
- 29:13Speaker 1: God Almighty, the Most High God. And their hearts were
- 29:18Speaker 1: swollen with joy, unto the gushing out of many tears,
- 29:23Speaker 1: because of the great goodness of God in delivering them
- 29:25Speaker 1: out of the hands of their enemies. And they knew
- 29:28Speaker 1: it was because of their repentance and their humility that
- 29:31Speaker 1: they had been delivered from an everlasting destruction. End of
