- 1:30Speaker 2: and those who travel it wind up in the gut
- 1:31Speaker 2: of the prison of the grave. This time I tangled
- 1:34Speaker 2: with a mad scotchman, a phony English lord, and a
- 1:36Speaker 2: beautiful blonde cops in a fright house all because of
- 1:40Speaker 2: a butler who walked on his knuckles. It happened like this.
- 1:45Speaker 3: From the men of Raymond Chandler outstanding all through of
- 1:47Speaker 3: crime fiction. Comes his most famous character in the Adventures

- 2:34Speaker 4: must have your.
- 2:34Speaker 5: Help at once.
- 2:35Speaker 4: Carnelia's light is in danger man, and time means everything.
- 2:38Speaker 2: No, wait a minute, Wait a minute.
- 2:39Speaker 5: Who are you?
- 2:40Speaker 2: Who's cornadio? Is where you're calling from? And about what?
- 2:42Speaker 2: Let's have it a slow step at a time.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Huh Hey, my name's Wesley McDuff. Mister Marlowe.
- 2:47Speaker 2: All right. Later on macduff, I'm calling from.
- 2:49Speaker 4: A telephone booth opposite the BigMan Plaza hotel in Hollywood Boulevard.
- 2:53Speaker 5: With Ashley Duke.
- 2:55Speaker 2: Ashley who going.
- 2:56Speaker 4: For the BigMan Plaza, Lord Ashley Duke himself to get
- 3:01Speaker 4: to it, mister Mountain o'hourry.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Meet me in the hotel lobby.
- 3:04Speaker 4: Yes, but we've got to stop them there go to
- 3:06Speaker 4: kill carmelions.
- 3:11Speaker 2: My first reaction was to forget the whole thing with
- 3:14Speaker 2: curiosity is strong stuff with me and he triumvirate labeled
- 3:17Speaker 2: Wesley McDuff, Lord Ashley Duke and cornets had to add
- 3:20Speaker 2: up to screwball. Matter way you started, the word kill
- 3:24Speaker 2: was still big in my vocabulary, so I buttoned the
- 3:27Speaker 2: office up, quickly, got down in my car, and drove
- 3:29Speaker 2: over to the Beagman Plaza Hotel, where a ten minutes
- 3:31Speaker 2: stand in the lobby produced nothing closer to worried Scotchman
- 3:34Speaker 2: and the plaid covering in a sagging Morris chair, and
- 3:38Speaker 2: at the reception desk there was no Wesley McDuff registered
- 3:40Speaker 2: or ever heard of. I'm sorry, sir so at that
- 3:42Speaker 2: I was ready to call it quits. I turned for
- 3:45Speaker 2: the door, but before I got there, I was stopped.
- 3:47Speaker 2: The uniform said bell hop and the sprinkle of freckles
- 3:50Speaker 2: plus bonn Cowlick said all American boy, but the shifty
- 3:53Speaker 2: eyes and a narrow mouth had slid over to the
- 3:55Speaker 2: side of his face when he talked said something else
- 3:58Speaker 2: like racetrack top.
- 4:00Speaker 6: Yeah me, sir, but I haven't over here. You ask
- 4:02Speaker 6: after a scotchman, Wesley McDuff.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Was it, yeah, you know? Where are you?
- 4:07Speaker 5: Well? Yes?
- 4:08Speaker 2: And yes? And how much?
- 4:11Speaker 5: Ten?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Five?
- 4:12Speaker 6: Okay, sport five? But let's get out of the traffic.
- 4:15Speaker 6: Huh Over here at this map like I was pointing
- 4:18Speaker 6: out something to Yet that's a fresh idea, thanks the viver.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Oh here, Now where's McDuff on.
- 4:26Speaker 6: His way to Burbank?
- 4:27Speaker 5: Dead drunk?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Ye're crazy? I talked to him less than half an
- 4:30Speaker 2: hour ago. He was throwing sober and a long way
- 4:31Speaker 2: from the party mood could be.
- 4:34Speaker 6: But fifteen minutes ago I helped Lord Ashley do piling
- 4:37Speaker 6: indoor car.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Wait a minute, Ashley Duke, how does he fit?
- 4:39Speaker 6: He found this McDuff in the alley outside. I was
- 4:42Speaker 6: just coming back from dinner when I saw him pick
- 4:43Speaker 6: the guy up. He couldn't say a word, but a
- 4:45Speaker 6: blue Shield medical card we found on his wallet read
- 4:48Speaker 6: Wesley McDuff, thirteen Vineland Avenue, Burbank.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Boy, he was out cold in my old man and
- 4:53Speaker 2: I listened, Junior, here's another five? Fill me in fast.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Who's Lord Ashley Due?
- 4:57Speaker 6: A nightclub character entertainer, lives here with his wife, Lady
- 5:00Speaker 6: Ashley Duke when they're in.
- 5:01Speaker 2: La Wells seven. Is he legitimate this lord business?
- 5:04Speaker 7: Nah?
- 5:05Speaker 2: No, but he plays it to the hilt.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Why after we piled that McDuff ender the cab, he
- 5:09Speaker 6: dusted his white gloves off gently you like slip the
- 5:11Speaker 6: monically wears into his iron grab another cabin shoved.
- 5:14Speaker 2: He's a phony.
- 5:15Speaker 6: His real name is Burt Duke's and the lady.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Is girt and on her it shows what do you mean?
- 5:19Speaker 2: Shows that The.
- 5:20Speaker 6: Second she gets behind her door they got sweet three
- 5:22Speaker 6: twelve she climbs out of her accent like it was
- 5:24Speaker 6: a tight girl, especially when she and that Nissa hers
- 5:27Speaker 6: go at it. Yes, the famous Marrinac cabins are on
- 5:30Speaker 6: Route sixty six near Saint Louis. Oh good evening, mister Fisher.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Okay, where will we the niece? The niece, Oh yeah,
- 5:41Speaker 2: quite a doll.
- 5:42Speaker 6: Her name's Merle Bremmer acts as a business manager, so.
- 5:46Speaker 2: She must also have brains. Tell me who's Cornelius?
- 5:48Speaker 8: Cornelius?
- 5:50Speaker 2: What's breaking you up? Who is he?
- 5:52Speaker 8: Nobody got the.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Star of the act.
- 5:54Speaker 6: The Lord and the lady do a fast thing, a
- 5:56Speaker 6: takeoff on English drawing room stuff, and Cornelius.
- 5:59Speaker 8: Plays the place it in a derby and a boiled shirt, no.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Less, Why the giggles. You've seen a derby and boiled
- 6:04Speaker 2: shirt before?
- 6:05Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, sure, I have put on Cornelius. It looks different,
- 6:08Speaker 6: you see, mister, he's a chimpanzee.
- 6:15Speaker 2: If there Cornelius definitely added screwball. But I also knew
- 6:18Speaker 2: the prospective client macduff had been sapped and piled into
- 6:21Speaker 2: a cab for good riddance, which could add less than funny.
- 6:24Speaker 2: So I decided to look around a little longer, especially
- 6:27Speaker 2: in the vicinity of Milady's chamber number three twelve. When
- 6:31Speaker 2: I stepped out of the elevator on the third floor,
- 6:33Speaker 2: an owl faced waiter was just piloting a dinner cot
- 6:36Speaker 2: loaded down with dirty dishes out of the room, and
- 6:38Speaker 2: when the cod juggled out of the carridor rug, it
- 6:40Speaker 2: nearly upset a coffee pot, which left the waiter's mind
- 6:43Speaker 2: on the juxtaposition of cot and pot and not the
- 6:45Speaker 2: door did he left open inches. I waited till he
- 6:49Speaker 2: passed me. Then I moved up to where I could
- 6:51Speaker 2: both see and hear Lady Ashley Duke and her niece
- 6:53Speaker 2: Merle exploding at each other. Through and after dinner conversation.
- 6:57Speaker 2: The farm always built like an up ended blimp with
- 6:59Speaker 2: as much charm as a mooring mast. The ladder was
- 7:02Speaker 2: blonde and female spy beautiful, and also she was nonchalant,
- 7:06Speaker 2: lay slipping air shiny thirty two automatic purse.
- 7:10Speaker 7: Your response, Oh, now, wait a minute, Kurt, before you
- 7:12Speaker 7: snap a stey, you listen to me.
- 7:14Speaker 9: Why so you can explain once more how poor Uncle
- 7:17Speaker 9: Bird's idiotic mistake so just bad luck, ten thousand bucks
- 7:21Speaker 9: worth of bad luck. He nuts, we don't know anything
- 7:24Speaker 9: about investments. He shouldn't be allowed to touch a red
- 7:26Speaker 9: scent and my pretty from here on out. That's exactly
- 7:29Speaker 9: the way it's gonna be, believe.
- 7:30Speaker 7: Oh, cut it, Curt, and quit blaming Uncle Burton me.
- 7:33Speaker 8: Are you kidding?
- 7:34Speaker 9: Why shouldn't I blame the two of you? He's a
- 7:36Speaker 9: jerk and you I never wanted you with us in
- 7:39Speaker 9: the first place, my niece, Oh shut.
- 7:42Speaker 7: Up, and remember, dear Ed, your husband likes me around.
- 7:46Speaker 7: I'm good for his morale, he says, he'll never let
- 7:48Speaker 7: you fire me, So don't blacee your breath, Anti, get
- 7:52Speaker 7: out of here. Go on, get down to the freight house.
- 7:54Speaker 7: And keep your eyes open.
- 7:55Speaker 8: We don't want to lose Carnelius.
- 7:57Speaker 9: Don't worry, Darling. God dude, he's an old specialty of mine.
- 8:00Speaker 8: Yes, who is it?
- 8:01Speaker 2: Name's marlow I'd like to see Lord Ashley Duke.
- 8:04Speaker 6: Oh well, yes he's not in.
- 8:12Speaker 2: But what did you want to see him about?
- 8:15Speaker 10: Oh?
- 8:16Speaker 2: Business? Can you help me?
- 8:18Speaker 4: Perhaps?
- 8:19Speaker 9: You see, I'm his business to be his business manager.
- 8:22Speaker 8: She was just leaving.
- 8:23Speaker 9: Why don't you, Marle Darling.
- 8:25Speaker 7: Yes, Merle Darling was mister Marlowe.
- 8:29Speaker 9: Lady Ashley Duke.
- 8:31Speaker 8: Goodbye, Antie, I'm happy.
- 8:33Speaker 9: Huh oh, Rather an answer to save each other's time,
- 8:37Speaker 9: let me be blunt. Lord Ashley Duke is no longer
- 8:40Speaker 9: interested in making any investments whatsoever, nor will he be
- 8:44Speaker 9: interested at a future date. Is that clear, sir?
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yes, it's like well water, Lady Ashley Duke. And if
- 8:48Speaker 2: I were looking for an investor, I keep it in mind.
- 8:50Speaker 2: But you see, I'm a private detective working for Wesley mcdup.
- 8:53Speaker 9: A paper, a lousy paper pushing his way.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Are easy, easy, Gertie, go get your feel the hands off, sure,
- 9:01Speaker 2: just as soon as you get back in a neutral
- 9:03Speaker 2: I also want to save us time and I want
- 9:05Speaker 2: to save Cornelius too. How do we talk our wrestle.
- 9:08Speaker 9: Which all right, seven weeks ago, Lord Ashley Duke and
- 9:13Speaker 9: I bought Cornelius from that crazy monkey razor out in Burbank.
- 9:17Speaker 9: It paid McDuff thirty thousand dollars for a run down
- 9:20Speaker 9: seventeen year old chimpanzee.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Well then, wait, you want to kill him. McDuff thinks
- 9:23Speaker 2: you're going.
- 9:24Speaker 9: To mcduff's crazy just because we change our minds and
- 9:26Speaker 9: instead of staying here in La decide to go on
- 9:29Speaker 9: the road. McDuff thinks Cornelius will catch cold and die,
- 9:32Speaker 9: so he wants him back.
- 9:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but you get your money back.
- 9:35Speaker 9: Yeah, but what about the seven weeks of work just
- 9:37Speaker 9: to teach him to drop a glass? Not only that
- 9:40Speaker 9: he's a wonderful imitator.
- 9:41Speaker 2: I can see your point.
- 9:42Speaker 9: Besides, the deal's a deal, and we're taking the risk
- 9:45Speaker 9: of Cornelius his death. Not the loon who runs that
- 9:47Speaker 9: Burbank animal farm. Well that's Scotchman thinks every animal and
- 9:50Speaker 9: the joints related to him.
- 9:52Speaker 2: It's an old idea, honey, But look, lady, is.
- 9:55Speaker 8: What we bet I talked.
- 9:57Speaker 9: People, Now, get on, go on, want to get out
- 10:00Speaker 9: before I forget.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I'm a lady.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Over hair Tampkins.
- 10:16Speaker 6: What is it the telephone call, Sir Boofoor this way?
- 10:19Speaker 2: Please make God all right up, Jim Dandy.
- 10:23Speaker 6: Good Now.
- 10:25Speaker 2: If you feel I was on the page, I feel
- 10:27Speaker 2: we came out even buster. Besides, I'm running low on
- 10:29Speaker 2: Farthings unless yes, you know where the freight house going
- 10:33Speaker 2: It just calls home is located. Uh huh okay Salon
- 10:38Speaker 2: on Champions Hello Morrow, Yeah, yeah, yeah, you all right?
- 10:44Speaker 10: McDuff.
- 10:44Speaker 4: It takes more than a foul blue in the dark
- 10:46Speaker 4: to stop me. Man, It's just what Lord Ashley Dookie
- 10:50Speaker 4: is going to Discovery in many minutes, and I've run
- 10:53Speaker 4: out of patience.
- 10:54Speaker 5: I ain't going to act, not talk.
- 10:56Speaker 4: I'm about to take corn Eliots back with my own
- 10:58Speaker 4: hands and I won't get a help.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Wait a minute.
- 11:00Speaker 5: I'm in a drug.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Store at Pershing Square, close by the freight house where
- 11:03Speaker 4: Cornelia said cage for shipment.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I want you to you can't steal him, McDuff.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Ah, I can steal him in this guise the animal,
- 11:10Speaker 4: so they'll never be able to claim him again, so
- 11:12Speaker 4: they won't be able to kill him.
- 11:13Speaker 2: McDuff. I can't go along with that, then I choorge.
- 11:16Speaker 5: The wrong man.
- 11:17Speaker 4: I just little time lift mister Marlowe. Tomorrow they leave
- 11:20Speaker 4: Los Angeles, now.
- 11:21Speaker 5: Will you help me?
- 11:22Speaker 2: No, beside McDuff, you'll never get away with it. There's
- 11:25Speaker 2: a girl, Ashley Duke's niece who's got a gun, and
- 11:27Speaker 2: I McDuff McDuff all away from the phone booth, through
- 11:36Speaker 2: the lobby and of my car outside. I kept telling
- 11:38Speaker 2: myself three things. One, I wasn't working for McDuff too.
- 11:41Speaker 2: McDuff was about to commit a crime. In three, I
- 11:44Speaker 2: couldn't worry about the gun in merle Brimer's purse. It
- 11:47Speaker 2: was all none of my business. So when I was
- 11:49Speaker 2: in behind the wheel of my car, I pointed toward
- 11:51Speaker 2: my apartment on Franklin, lit a cigarette and forgot about
- 11:54Speaker 2: the whole thing. But a block later I threw the
- 11:57Speaker 2: cigarette out, turned and headed for Pershing Square. Scott's with
- 12:00Speaker 2: animal fumbs in Burbank. Obviously weren't the only crazy people
- 12:03Speaker 2: in Los Angeles. After arriving at Prussian Square, I was
- 12:14Speaker 2: thirty minutes piling up wise cracks, frozen stairs, and a
- 12:16Speaker 2: sort of giggles before I hit pay dirt. A bottle
- 12:19Speaker 2: boy with a great memory.
- 12:21Speaker 11: Yeah, sure, I know a place only spot around little ship,
- 12:26Speaker 11: live animals or the rest of the stuff that they handled,
- 12:31Speaker 11: anything from an eel to an olive.
- 12:34Speaker 2: About penguins, You got those two, I thought, Yeah.
- 12:37Speaker 11: I worked there Wenesday during the Christmas rush, made the
- 12:42Speaker 11: price of a fifth one day.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Look. Look, you'll do it again right now if you
- 12:46Speaker 2: can tell me one thing, the address? What is it?
- 12:49Speaker 8: It's yeah, hay, come on, warty two.
- 12:58Speaker 2: Four string, here's five crawled back in a bottle. I'll
- 13:04Speaker 2: see it. The neighborhood was half residential, half industrial, and
- 13:16Speaker 2: all run down, including the freight house, which was two
- 13:19Speaker 2: windowless stories of dirty red brick offering over a loading
- 13:22Speaker 2: ramp on a deserted, shadowy street. I started slowly towarded
- 13:26Speaker 2: when suddenly a side door flew open. An excited old
- 13:29Speaker 2: man with flashlight and giant key ring that spelled night
- 13:32Speaker 2: Watchman leaped out of the building, arms and legs, going
- 13:34Speaker 2: like twin beats on a mixmaster. Hey, hey, fine, hold
- 13:39Speaker 2: it is at the.
- 13:39Speaker 12: Chimpsh and he's raising the rupern there eh, you are
- 13:42Speaker 12: a shooting?
- 13:43Speaker 5: Are we fired?
- 13:44Speaker 2: He's worth of fortune, I know all about it. Come out,
- 13:46Speaker 2: give me a hand. Now, let's go.
- 13:48Speaker 8: Where is he upstairs? Hanging in one window at the back?
- 13:52Speaker 8: I just turned the lights.
- 13:53Speaker 5: Ordinary watch uh when do you see me?
- 13:55Speaker 10: Grabbed the stick from the board, started beating things wind.
- 13:58Speaker 2: Oh fine, And then he broke the window and began swing.
- 14:00Speaker 10: On the block and tackle.
- 14:01Speaker 5: You're running outside from the roof to the ground.
- 14:04Speaker 10: Car.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yes, hey, Bobby.
- 14:09Speaker 10: And away.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Well all right, pap we better call the corots.
- 14:14Speaker 5: Over there here he's empty cage. What's your girl doing
- 14:18Speaker 5: over her head?
- 14:20Speaker 2: Holy smoke? Merle Bremmer. She did, Yeah, beat the death
- 14:27Speaker 2: with his stick? That chimp just throw this?
- 14:30Speaker 10: Then then you think the monkey?
- 14:33Speaker 2: I don't know, maybe yes, maybe no. It's a great
- 14:37Speaker 2: imitat that Poppa could have been somebody else, the monkey
- 14:40Speaker 2: who the monkey's uncle a scotchman named mac duff.
- 14:55Speaker 3: In just a moment, the second act of Philip Marlowe.
- 14:58Speaker 3: But first, grouch ome Mark. We'll make another of his
- 15:01Speaker 3: famed personal appearances on most of these same CBS stations
- 15:04Speaker 3: this Wednesday Night. Groucho Marx, whose many activities include MCing
- 15:08Speaker 3: You Bet Your Life, one of the craziest quiz shows
- 15:11Speaker 3: on the air. You're cordially invited to hear Groucho Marx every.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Wednesday on CBS.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Now with our star Gerald Moore, we returned to the
- 15:21Speaker 3: second act of Philip Marlowe and Tonight's story, The Monkey's Uncle.
- 15:36Speaker 2: I walked around the body of the girl on the
- 15:37Speaker 2: freight house floor. I took a close look at the
- 15:41Speaker 2: cage lock. There was no doubt that it has been
- 15:43Speaker 2: forced from the outside. The watchman staring down at the
- 15:47Speaker 2: body was shaking like a motorcycle with square wheels. So
- 15:50Speaker 2: I took him by the arm and walked him down
- 15:51Speaker 2: the stairs and outside with some air.
- 15:54Speaker 10: It's terrible.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I don't know what to do.
- 15:56Speaker 8: Nothing like this ever happened here before. Never told me
- 16:00Speaker 8: what I'm supposed.
- 16:01Speaker 3: To do in a case like that.
- 16:02Speaker 2: It's easy. Just call the police.
- 16:04Speaker 10: Police.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll sell the SPCA and Frank Buck Chances I
- 16:08Speaker 2: will need him all before the night.
- 16:09Speaker 10: So okay, mister hey, who said getting out.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Of that cab from the top hat cape and spats?
- 16:16Speaker 2: I said it was one Lord Ashley Duke, the legal
- 16:19Speaker 2: owner of the champ.
- 16:20Speaker 5: What are you two players staring at him?
- 16:23Speaker 2: Just a moment, just a moment before you go inside.
- 16:25Speaker 2: I want to talk to you, Lord Ashley Duke. You
- 16:27Speaker 2: know my name?
- 16:28Speaker 5: Do you know Joe? That's interesting? I don't know you, sir.
- 16:32Speaker 2: I'll survive. Why'd you come down here tonight?
- 16:34Speaker 13: Because I heard that my niece was here protecting my
- 16:36Speaker 13: property that's now shootablelek toss for the girl not capable
- 16:40Speaker 13: to do that sort of thing.
- 16:40Speaker 5: You know, man's job, you know, and the beastly time
- 16:44Speaker 5: finding the.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Place to You haven't been here before?
- 16:46Speaker 5: Oh yeah, a couple of days ago, but that was
- 16:49Speaker 5: in broad daylight us.
- 16:51Speaker 2: One thing more, why did you slug Wesley mcdeath to
- 16:54Speaker 2: night and dump him in a cab?
- 16:56Speaker 10: Just?
- 16:57Speaker 1: Who are you?
- 16:58Speaker 2: Anyway? Private Detective Philip Mala's name sounds Brittish enough, about
- 17:02Speaker 2: as British as you are.
- 17:04Speaker 5: Oh yeah, and you I presume. Oh they watched one?
- 17:07Speaker 10: Yes, that's me, your highness.
- 17:09Speaker 2: What about macduff, Your highness, there's no choice.
- 17:12Speaker 5: The blighter wanted to welch on the transaction we've made.
- 17:14Speaker 5: I refuse.
- 17:15Speaker 13: He threatened me, so I bopped him and then made
- 17:19Speaker 13: out he was intoxicated, you know, packed him off in
- 17:21Speaker 13: a cabineless When a man sells me a monkey by George,
- 17:26Speaker 13: that monkey is mine. I thought that treatment might bring
- 17:29Speaker 13: McDuff to his bloody sense.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Well it did. It made him tougher. And what's more,
- 17:32Speaker 2: the chimpanzee is gone and.
- 17:34Speaker 5: The cornidius has gone.
- 17:35Speaker 10: Wait a minute, ante, come on, okay, wow, Yeah, what's.
- 17:49Speaker 5: Happened to it? Oh? No, Merle, merle baby. That's the
- 17:54Speaker 5: way she was when we found her.
- 17:56Speaker 8: And that crazy monkey was in here, just to jumping
- 17:59Speaker 8: up and down like he was.
- 18:00Speaker 5: It was mcdup, mcdup, that's what was that, madman.
- 18:05Speaker 10: Hoy mercrel. What was there? I don't know, but I'm
- 18:07Speaker 10: gonna find out.
- 18:07Speaker 2: You stay here, Screaming Company Architectural blunder next door. It
- 18:16Speaker 2: was one of those big gingerbread houses left over from
- 18:18Speaker 2: the eighteen hundreds. And I got there just in time
- 18:20Speaker 2: to meet the witch. The scaly front portal was jerked
- 18:23Speaker 2: open in front of me, and there she stood like
- 18:25Speaker 2: a pool cue and high panic, top by a head
- 18:27Speaker 2: of brittle orange hair, half done up tightened curlors, the
- 18:30Speaker 2: other half streaming over her face. She clutched frantically at
- 18:33Speaker 2: the stained Kimona with one hand and me with the other.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Take it easy, hold it, what's going on?
- 18:39Speaker 5: What face?
- 18:41Speaker 9: Oh protect me, it's take.
- 18:44Speaker 5: It easy with your.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Calm down and tell me what happened.
- 18:46Speaker 9: I was upstairs in my room taking my head down
- 18:49Speaker 9: when I happened to look over at the window and
- 18:50Speaker 9: there was that face, jumped right up against the glass. Oh,
- 18:54Speaker 9: I swear I never seen nothing like that before I
- 18:56Speaker 9: took the cure.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Missed it all right? Now listen, yeah, all over it?
- 19:00Speaker 9: Red eyes and big green in mouth? What was like
- 19:02Speaker 9: one of them giant go willas.
- 19:04Speaker 5: That cut in the moon.
- 19:04Speaker 2: That's cornad. It's all right. Where's the room?
- 19:06Speaker 9: I walked there at the ahead of them standing.
- 19:09Speaker 10: Alone.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Well then come along, Corne's a train champion. Won't hurt you?
- 19:13Speaker 8: Oh no, not me, brother, I didn't.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Where where? Tell me? Is that a passage out there
- 19:22Speaker 2: between the houses?
- 19:23Speaker 9: Oh no, that was the kind of an airshift me.
- 19:26Speaker 5: Up at the bay.
- 19:26Speaker 2: You mean you can't get through to the alley.
- 19:27Speaker 5: Yeah, that's right.
- 19:29Speaker 9: There's no way out of there except the street.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Right, come on, let's get outside. We got them cornered.
- 19:32Speaker 8: Oh you got your corner.
- 19:33Speaker 9: Baby, missed it?
- 19:33Speaker 14: Not me.
- 19:34Speaker 9: I didn't want nothing want to do with that.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I'd be pulled the air shaft was a scant eighteen
- 19:41Speaker 2: inches wide and as dark and cluttered as the inside
- 19:44Speaker 2: of a goat pen with odors to mash. I worked
- 19:47Speaker 2: my way back as far as the bashful light in
- 19:48Speaker 2: the street.
- 19:49Speaker 8: Road, so it would be careful in there.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Missed it, then I stopped and listened. But Cornads was
- 19:53Speaker 2: a genius. There wasn't a sound, and I couldn't see
- 19:57Speaker 2: my hand in front of my face, to say nothing
- 19:58Speaker 2: of a black hair chimpanzee was no doubt getting a
- 20:01Speaker 2: big kick out of the entire procedure. I decided to
- 20:04Speaker 2: try psychology on him. So I called, and what I
- 20:08Speaker 2: hoped was a firm but friendly voice, and it got
- 20:10Speaker 2: me no place. I groped my way along the wall
- 20:13Speaker 2: of the drain pipe and called again, this time shorter
- 20:16Speaker 2: on the friendly and longer on the firm, which was
- 20:17Speaker 2: a mistake. The drain pipe should have given me a hint,
- 20:20Speaker 2: but it didn't.
- 20:21Speaker 15: Oh he's going, Who's god?
- 20:43Speaker 9: It was up on the drain pipe. It hits you
- 20:45Speaker 9: on the head with something that ran right, asked me,
- 20:47Speaker 9: and got away in a taxi. Oh come on, let's
- 20:50Speaker 9: get out.
- 20:51Speaker 2: Wait a minute, baby, I could have sworn you said
- 20:54Speaker 2: that the monkey took a taxi. He did.
- 20:56Speaker 9: I watched the whole as soon as it got out
- 20:58Speaker 9: in the street. A man in a checked the can
- 21:00Speaker 9: with a crooked stick in his hand, came out for
- 21:02Speaker 9: between them buildings over there and called it. They ran
- 21:05Speaker 9: up to a taxi. The driver jumped out and drove away.
- 21:07Speaker 1: I seen him.
- 21:08Speaker 2: The driver jumped out and they drove away. I don't
- 21:11Speaker 2: think you took the cure soon enough.
- 21:13Speaker 9: Well, I've seen something else too. A fat brad in
- 21:15Speaker 9: a high hat and spat came charging out of the
- 21:17Speaker 9: freight house there. Saw the cab leaving gotten a green
- 21:20Speaker 9: coopd O.
- 21:22Speaker 2: He smoked, that's my car. Oh it's gone. How do
- 21:26Speaker 2: you like that?
- 21:26Speaker 9: Yeah, now maybe you believe me.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Huh, every scrowy word, sweetheart. And now look you didn't
- 21:30Speaker 2: happen to see.
- 21:31Speaker 9: Well, look that's the cab driver.
- 21:33Speaker 14: Then don't want to see what happened. I gotta have
- 21:34Speaker 14: a witness. My tax was hijacked off of me by
- 21:36Speaker 14: two crazy guys. One of them looked like an ape,
- 21:38Speaker 14: exactly like an ape.
- 21:39Speaker 2: Move over, Bud, we're on the same raft. My car's
- 21:42Speaker 2: gone too. Tell mean what happened? Well, you started at
- 21:44Speaker 2: the top.
- 21:45Speaker 14: Okay, tonight, I bring this big shot and a high
- 21:47Speaker 14: hat down here to the freight house.
- 21:49Speaker 8: He hops out, tells me to wait.
- 21:51Speaker 5: See.
- 21:52Speaker 8: So I drive down the block and thrown around.
- 21:54Speaker 14: I'm parked right over there trying to grab a quick
- 21:57Speaker 14: forty winks when.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Up comes this looon a scotchman.
- 22:00Speaker 10: Yeah him.
- 22:02Speaker 14: He throws me a fast a dress and starts getting
- 22:04Speaker 14: in say. I politely tell him the flag is down,
- 22:07Speaker 14: but he keeps coming.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I know. It's just like now, look, did
- 22:11Speaker 2: you ever see this scotchman before?
- 22:12Speaker 12: No?
- 22:13Speaker 10: Never.
- 22:14Speaker 14: I figure maybe he's got a snoot full of happy
- 22:16Speaker 14: days nothing more. So I'm reaching over to block him
- 22:20Speaker 14: when a pair of hands that feels like a door
- 22:22Speaker 14: mat with muscles grabs me around the neck.
- 22:25Speaker 8: I twist around and look and what do I see him?
- 22:28Speaker 8: I don't know, but an ape man is crawling in
- 22:30Speaker 8: my wing.
- 22:31Speaker 5: So help me.
- 22:31Speaker 8: I'm rubbing noses with a missing leak.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Yeah I know. Then what happened mac.
- 22:35Speaker 14: I jumped out of the taxi, and before I know it,
- 22:37Speaker 14: the old geezer gives me a cloud with his stick
- 22:40Speaker 14: piles in the next thing, My tax is gone, just
- 22:42Speaker 14: like that.
- 22:43Speaker 8: You gotta believe me. Somebody's gotta buy me.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:45Speaker 8: If I try this on the cops, that will have
- 22:46Speaker 8: me in a patter of selling no time.
- 22:48Speaker 2: I don't worry about it, fellow, Just reach hard for
- 22:49Speaker 2: that address the scotchman gave you. Can you remember it?
- 22:52Speaker 16: Oh?
- 22:52Speaker 8: Sure, let me see.
- 22:54Speaker 2: It was the the Rushmore Rushmore.
- 22:57Speaker 8: Yeah, that's down at the heels More.
- 23:00Speaker 14: They all out on burning somewhere surround the Beverly boulevard.
- 23:03Speaker 8: Ed Mason's stepped on something here on the sidewalk.
- 23:06Speaker 9: Oh, you sure did, cutey, you smashed it too.
- 23:09Speaker 2: It looks like somebody's watched Crystal.
- 23:10Speaker 9: Sure, ladies, watch Crystal. Oh nice one. See it had
- 23:14Speaker 9: this hung of black.
- 23:14Speaker 5: Ribbon with it.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Ladies, Hey, wait a minute, let me see that.
- 23:17Speaker 8: Sure here it's velvets.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, sure is. It doesn't fit not here. No
- 23:22Speaker 2: one's been here for the three of us in the
- 23:24Speaker 2: chimp so long. Kids. Hey, hey wait, I'm going to
- 23:27Speaker 2: talk to a liar about a murder. I'll see you
- 23:29Speaker 2: later at headquarters. I hope talk to the night watchman
- 23:32Speaker 2: in the freight house. Shall be good for each other.
- 23:41Speaker 2: I was two blocks on foot finding another taxi in
- 23:43Speaker 2: fifteen minutes getting from there out to the motel, worrying
- 23:46Speaker 2: all the way because I'd left my gun under the
- 23:48Speaker 2: front seat of my car. Business was slow with the Rushmore.
- 23:52Speaker 2: The only cabin that children light was the last in
- 23:54Speaker 2: the rear, next to the alley. I was sure of
- 23:56Speaker 2: what I'd find inside, in spite of the fact that
- 23:59Speaker 2: neither of us stole and cab, nor my coop was
- 24:01Speaker 2: any place in sight. When I heard the voices, I
- 24:04Speaker 2: decided to bluffet. I went up to the front door
- 24:06Speaker 2: and pressed my ear against a flimsy panel.
- 24:08Speaker 5: Anyway, a bargain's a bargain, uf, you'd have done better
- 24:11Speaker 5: to stick by it.
- 24:12Speaker 12: He stick wade if he had your scare of me, crew.
- 24:15Speaker 5: Gond reach for your chain. It's a little late for that.
- 24:18Speaker 5: You're in a real jam now. I'm gonna see you
- 24:21Speaker 5: playing for my niece's murder.
- 24:22Speaker 10: But I didn't kill her.
- 24:23Speaker 12: I pushed her down if she got me unlocking Carnelia's
- 24:26Speaker 12: cage and tried to stop me. But I didn't kill her.
- 24:29Speaker 16: You did that, yes, yes, but who knows that except
- 24:32Speaker 16: you and the monk there, and he can't talk, and
- 24:35Speaker 16: you won't late me.
- 24:36Speaker 5: Ay your daft man.
- 24:37Speaker 8: Why did you do it?
- 24:38Speaker 16: Because I had to, because Merle was pleading me to
- 24:41Speaker 16: death every cente I lay my hands on.
- 24:44Speaker 5: I had to buy her silence.
- 24:45Speaker 16: I had to pretend to lose thousands and poor investments. Well,
- 24:48Speaker 16: Merle got what was coming to her, and you gave
- 24:50Speaker 16: me that chance. I found her on the floor where
- 24:53Speaker 16: you left her and simply finished the job.
- 24:55Speaker 12: Then you ran off and came back in that taxi
- 24:58Speaker 12: fifteen minutes later, the very sp of innocence. I saw
- 25:01Speaker 12: you very well, Lord Ashley Duke. You've got me as
- 25:05Speaker 12: a thief tool.
- 25:05Speaker 5: So get on with it. Get on with it, filthy
- 25:08Speaker 5: evil plant.
- 25:08Speaker 10: I'm ready.
- 25:09Speaker 2: I'll be in a hurry. Mcdoubts say where you are, Ashley,
- 25:11Speaker 2: don't bother it turning around. Just drop the gun, you know,
- 25:13Speaker 2: let me down, Laddy, I knew it.
- 25:15Speaker 5: It's this o boy.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Let's get the accent, birch. You won't need it where
- 25:19Speaker 2: you're going. Drop that gun, I said, you will move.
- 25:22Speaker 5: Shoot me with that pipe in your pocket. Wallow. I've
- 25:27Speaker 5: got your gun here in my hand and you know it.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Want to bed well it with the light out?
- 25:32Speaker 5: Yes?
- 25:43Speaker 12: Oh oh, it's a very strange thing lead hit you
- 25:52Speaker 12: butt once there are two lumps on your skull.
- 25:55Speaker 10: You can missconditions.
- 25:56Speaker 2: You have a mind skipping. I don't want to talk
- 25:59Speaker 2: about it.
- 26:01Speaker 12: Where's Ashley dressed up there in the corner. He should
- 26:04Speaker 12: be coming around soon. You see, Cornelius, as you've no
- 26:08Speaker 12: doubt learned, is a great imitator. When he saw Ashley
- 26:11Speaker 12: bat you on the head with a gun, he grabbed McCaine,
- 26:14Speaker 12: leaped up on the dresser there and batted Ashley.
- 26:16Speaker 2: On the head with this headache. Okay, don't tell me
- 26:20Speaker 2: I'm indebted to that, just when I was learning to
- 26:22Speaker 2: hate him.
- 26:23Speaker 10: We both are for our lives.
- 26:26Speaker 12: But tell me what does a black velvet ribbon and
- 26:29Speaker 12: a watch crystal mean?
- 26:31Speaker 10: Mumble that over and over while you were out.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Oh, well, that's how I knew Ashley was a liar
- 26:37Speaker 2: and a killer. See the cab driver stepped on a
- 26:40Speaker 2: round piece of glass. It looked like a watch crystal
- 26:42Speaker 2: with a ribbon attached. Happened on the sidewalk in front
- 26:45Speaker 2: of an ass shaft. Actually the oh, actually the glass.
- 26:49Speaker 8: Was a monocle drop my lord Ashley duque.
- 26:52Speaker 2: Oh, Ashley never been at that spot. No, what if
- 26:56Speaker 2: Cornadi has had, and if Cornadias dropped a monocle, it
- 26:59Speaker 2: indicated that or Ashley Duke had been someplace with Cornadius
- 27:02Speaker 2: earlier night. You see, I could only be the freight
- 27:05Speaker 2: house it. Ashley claimed he hadn't been there for two days.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Oh oh you do? Oh how about you Cornelius. Oh well,
- 27:16Speaker 2: that's one of the best dances I've had tonight. It
- 27:33Speaker 2: didn't take long at police headquarters, maybe an hour altogether.
- 27:37Speaker 2: A killer was locked up for trial, and the key
- 27:39Speaker 2: witness ate three eRASS built a quarter of ink and
- 27:42Speaker 2: broke a window for the homicide boys finally gave up.
- 27:47Speaker 2: I watched the phony lord Ashley Duke walk down the
- 27:49Speaker 2: car to to his cell. Any connection he had with
- 27:52Speaker 2: man was just the category. And I watched mcduffin company
- 27:56Speaker 2: leave too. A couple of regular guys, a monkey, a
- 28:02Speaker 2: monkey's uncle, a genuine old Scotto loved life, and his
- 28:07Speaker 2: shuffling friend whose only limitation was his inability to speak.
- 28:11Speaker 2: But he communicated all right, and the only language that
- 28:15Speaker 2: means anything, love of one creature for another.

- 31:42Speaker 1: the award by Gerald Moore definitely well earned, brings a
- 31:47Speaker 1: lot to the role, and certainly this role as Philip
- 31:52Speaker 1: Marlow is just a very powerful and memorable performance. Speaking
