- 0:02Here's your host, Alex Garrett. Alright, well, it's Mother's Day,
- 0:10and I hope all the moms out there have had a beautiful day. Hope
- 0:14that you've honored your mom the right way and uh honored her fully. I
- 0:21hope it's been a beautiful Mother's Day. Also, I am intrigued that they've
- 0:26also included the term mother like figures as well. So anybody who's been as
- 0:33nurturing and as motherly, kudos to you. Also, Now, why am
- 0:40I doing this podcast almost every day and having fun with it and enjoying it?
- 0:49Well, I gotta tell you it's cause I'm my mom. Yeah.
- 0:53My dad had me at George Simon or suite, have me at different things
- 0:57over the years. But my mom at the age of five, when I
- 1:02was five years old Renumber now she's a journalism guru. She was a journalist
- 1:08for the Brooklyn Paper and other local outlets, daily News. We used to
- 1:12go to the Daily News building and all that fun stuff. So at five
- 1:17years old, when I really want to play the game of baseball and other
- 1:21sports but really maybe couldn't keep up with the bigger kids, I guess able
- 1:27body kids, if you will, Mom said, why don't you go into
- 1:32broadcasting. That was when I was five years old, and here I am,
- 1:36age thirty two with a podcast that continues to grow. We continue to
- 1:41get downloads, we continue to get great guests and people partnering up with us
- 1:46through popmatch and whatnot. And I love it. I absolutely love it.
- 1:53But I'm on the mic today because my mom, when I was at the
- 1:59age of five, had the best advice, which was going to the media,
- 2:02going to broadcasting. Call the games. You know, when I started
- 2:06that on my little Sega genesis, I was doing games at as I was
- 2:14playing the hockey games, I call the play the action going up the ice,
- 2:17down the ice on my Sega genesis, calling out the numbers. All
- 2:22right, so and so and so and so shoot score, you know.
- 2:25And I think that that advice from my mom, who by the way,
- 2:32is kicking ass in her college career. Maybe we'll get to talk about that
- 2:43and you'll see it this Friday. We'll see. But my mom not only
- 2:50has given me the best advice every time, but but she's also car her
- 3:00own path out in life through thick and thin. And let me tell you
- 3:10that I am so proud that she was continuing to be her own person while
- 3:17being a mom. She went out there and did events in journalism. She
- 3:23went out there and worked her butt off at different jobs over the years.
- 3:29Yes, to support my needs as someone with special needs, if you will,
- 3:34growing up, but also to advance her own career. She has continually
- 3:42carved out her own path while being a mom, and that is really with
- 3:47the challenges you know that I'm sure she faced for a minute one of motherhood
- 3:53on October twenty, nineteen ninety one, that is really honorable and something to
- 3:57be proud of as her son, that she was able to balance what we
- 4:03were going through as a family with making sure those columns were posted, or
- 4:11those blogs, or those galleries right with belief in it were posted. She
- 4:17really, what did I write today on Facebook? I had it kind of
- 4:24written out and I'll share it with you, because what she's accomplished in thirty
- 4:30and a half years as a mom and still accomplishing so much wouldn't make any
- 4:45son or daughter smile. Makes me smile. She's continually worked on getting her
- 4:56master's degree caught in public history. Even through the loss of my dad through
- 5:00some health stuff, she is continuing to master her own life and that's something
- 5:08to look up to in my own world when I may not be totally healthy
- 5:15all the time. But that being said five years old on the apartment rugs
- 5:27in East forty fourth, she said, just go into media. And boy,
- 5:32when she gave me that license to talk, I haven't shut up since.
- 5:38Literally have not shut up since. And I think that is worth something
- 5:46to podcast about. And from calling games on my TV screen to interviewing those
- 5:53who actually call the game like Bob Wolf and Kenny Albert and getting knows all
- 5:58these people in the sports media world now the NR Hour, there's no coincidence
- 6:03that my mom set a trajectory for my media path and I want to thank
- 6:10her for that on this podcast on Mother's Day twenty twenty four by giving me
- 6:14that simple advice, I'm not trying to play the game, well why not
- 6:19call the game? And I've been talking and calling and podcasting and going on
- 6:26radio and all that fun stuff ever since. And we can all have my
- 6:31mom to thank for that. And I want to thank her for always taking
- 6:35care of my needs, my care and never not being there even when she's
- 6:48not been as healthy or undergoing a recovery from different searcheries. I don't want
- 6:57to thank her for involving my stepdad Vic, who created the mantle, and
- 7:06I love you, Pops soap. I say, Vic created the mantle of
- 7:11stable fatherhood in my world. And I am so grateful my mom and him
- 7:15married. I'm grateful that she brought him into our world and that was yet
- 7:25another life changing decision she made that made everything almost seamless. Even through my
- 7:32health crisis. The emotional support made everything seamless. I could be sorry to
- 7:39say this, having a hot dog stuck at whatever age, but I always
- 7:44got through it because they were so calm about it. Yeah, maybe a
- 7:46little freaked out, but ultimately it was that calming when we got into the
- 7:49emmert into the operating room that she had that I'll never forget as I get
- 7:58older in my own years. Here. By the way, my mom also
- 8:05would be noticed. I noticed her voice as soon as she's walked into any
- 8:09place, any room, whether it be a Viscardi or any place we were
- 8:13at. I always knew my mom was in the same room because her voice
- 8:16resonated, and it'll always resonate on this and every Mother's day. So I
- 8:26hope tonight you take your mom's advice, whatever it might be, whatever situation
- 8:31you're dealing with. I pray you've had as a supportive mom as I've been
- 8:35fortunate to have, and that you had a really blessed day, and that
- 8:41never not listen to mom. Mother's instinct is real, and I know in
- 8:48my community, the mothers of our community, the instinct they had is why
- 8:54many of us thankfully are still here today. And the likes of Max Gold's
- 9:01mom Lynn gave him the best life he could have for as long as he
- 9:09was meant to be here. Same goes with Dono Mohan and you know Michelle's
- 9:16mom, Michelle Mohan's mom, They and Hillary Bernstein's mom and Barbara, they
- 9:22all fought for their kid and made sure they were here for as long as
- 9:26they possibly could, for as long as I guess you say God needed them
- 9:30here, powering through their disability and inspiring others. You know, Michelle Mohan
- 9:35had this minochondrial disease fundraiser that benefited foundations supporting kids with minochondrial disease. She
- 9:45made an impact. Hillary was a big part of our core even while she
- 9:52was at Blythedale or any rehabit from soldiery after surgery. That's because her mom
- 9:58made sure she would be involved even from afar. And what can we say
- 10:03about Max? Okay, Max and his mom were always there for everyone in
- 10:11the class they were. She was always present, always making sure Max was
- 10:18taking care of and gave him the best thirty two years of life thirty one
- 10:26and a half. Actually, and you know, we miss I don't know
- 10:33if I should say it. We miss Matt lin Blad's mom who did pass
- 10:37away, Colleen Lindblad, was a nurse and also an incredible mom to both
- 10:48Matt and Katie. And of course there's ADDIE's mom, Gloria, who continues
- 10:56to be by ADDIE's side as she's can ask in DC. And that's also
- 11:03because even as well all of us got older. I have to believe as
- 11:07much as our parents fight for us, we listen to them. That's why
- 11:11we're able to be here. That's why I'm able to be behind the mic
- 11:15for another Mother's Day because I've listened to my mom's advice on ways to stay
- 11:22here another year, to keep going, to keep living and living as best
- 11:33I can and as healthily as I can. So listen to your mom's advice.
- 11:46Your mother's instinct is never wrong. And I think of the woman that
- 11:54birthed my mom, my grandmother, Didi Shirley. It's amazing to me that
- 12:01one woman who had three kids, my mom, my Ricky, and my
- 12:05Nikki, created this incredible family of twelve grandchildren, right, and dozens of
- 12:16great grandkids who will probably go on to create more kids and expand our family,
- 12:24whether it be the Rosenbergs, the Fisks, and maybe one day I'll
- 12:31be fortunate enough to expand my own family tree. I don't know about that
- 12:35yet, not rushing into it, but maybe. But I'm always amazed at
- 12:43TCHIRLEI Brockway and not only lived to one hundred, but what she did in
- 12:46one hundred years on this earth. Her legacy is felt today this Mother's Date,
- 12:52every Mother's Day by the three women that she created and raised, and
- 12:58all also the offspring of those women who continue to tell the story of Shirley
- 13:05Brockway's life and legacy in the impact she had as a Senior Citizen's Center director,
- 13:16as a mother, as a grandmother, a great grandmother, and I
- 13:24will proudly continue to tell the story of my grandmother Shirley Brockway, because one
- 13:31hundred years is just the tip of the iceberg. It's what she made of
- 13:37those hundred years that matter the most. It's what's my mom has done in
- 13:43thirty two and a half years as a mom and before that as a journalist
- 13:48that continue to throw flow through my veins, my writing, my journalistic instincts,
- 13:58my need to be on the scene, that comes from my mom,
- 14:01who was a beat reporter, who was out on the street reporting different things
- 14:05happening in different areas of the city for different newspapers. That instinct, I
- 14:13think comes from my mom, and I am thankful I inherited that, And
- 14:22I'm thankful that my mom continues to be the amazing woman. She continues to
- 14:30accomplish so much and doesn't let anything stop her anything. And that's a lot
- 14:39to be proud of this Mother's Day. And yes, for keeping me alive
- 14:48for three thirty two and a half years, I do feel like the baton
- 14:52is being passed on to me to continue to staying alive. And even in
- 14:58moments where I feel kind of down or whatever, I think the efforts of
- 15:05my parents to keep me here and that gets me going, that fires me
- 15:11up, That motivates me. And I think the best Mother's Day present we
- 15:20can give our moms is that to show we're growing, We're going beyond where
- 15:26we were a year ago and expanding, whether it be expanding roles is at
- 15:33work or expanding roles when new job opportunities, We're always expanding. That is
- 15:41the greatest gift we can give our parents, especially our mom, because our
- 15:50mom is our foundation, our base or where we started and where we can
- 16:03learn from, where we do learn from. And I think I am thankful
- 16:14to have this stable home that my mom created, that my stepdad helped build
- 16:21even more after nine and I'll always be thankful for that stability and for that
- 16:33love and for that care and that drive. And I guess it's salvage just
- 16:48said that drive to keep me alive, but that drive to keep me alive.
- 16:52Yes, So I started to talking about the advice she gave me,
- 17:00But there's tons of other advice along the way that I'm learning to intake and
- 17:06utilize to the best I can each and every day. Love you, mom,
- 17:15and I'm proud to be your son. On Mother's Day twenty twenty four
- 17:22and forever, really hope you've enjoyed this Mother's Day, and thank you to
- 17:30you and all the moms out there for shaping us into who we've become today.
- 17:37And I want to end with this quote that I saw. It's from
- 17:40anonymous, because I don't know where it came from, but I'll just tell
- 17:44you, train up a child in the way he should go, even when
- 17:52he was old. When he is old, he will not depart from it.
- 17:59And it's true. Our mom's always known the direction to go, and
- 18:02no matter where this path and life takes me, I continue to lean on
- 18:07mom and always will. And yeah, she's on the money with her advice
- 18:15and I'm better for it. Love you, Mom. Happy Mother's Day,
- 18:22twenty twenty four.
