The Fall of Timbuktu: Songhai's Last City Surrenders
In March 1591, the Battle of Tondibi shattered the Songhai Empire. But the real tragedy came when the Saadian army marched on Timbuktu—the intellectual jewel of West Africa. This episode reconstructs the siege and surrender of the fabled city, the arrest of its greatest scholar Ahmed Baba, and the looting of its libraries. We trace how the Moroccan invasion ended not just a dynasty but a golden age of African learning. The Pashalik of Timbuktu begins, and the empire's heart goes dark.
