Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Maybe we were too quick to write off the Comm games
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It took a while for the Commonwealth Games to get going,
- 0:01Speaker 1: but yesterday they finally did. Lewis Clarbert took gold in
- 0:05Speaker 1: the two hundred meters butterfly in an insane burst over
- 0:08Speaker 1: the last fifty meters. You've got to watch it. He's
- 0:10Speaker 1: incredible a race he even he called stupid. There we go,
- 0:13Speaker 1: but he won. And that's a great feeling for the
- 0:15Speaker 1: nation because no disrespect to the earlier medalists, it's gold
- 0:19Speaker 1: that gets us going. And it's been a funny Old
- 0:22Speaker 1: con Games thus far because no gold, but also it's
- 0:25Speaker 1: a scaled down replacement event after Victoria lost their bottle
- 0:29Speaker 1: and canceled their games and Glasgow said, okay, we'll have
- 0:32Speaker 1: a crack. And it's been plagued by no shows from
- 0:35Speaker 1: high performance athletes who thought it beneath their participation. But
- 0:39Speaker 1: I've always liked the Comonwealth Games. It's a good meet.
- 0:41Speaker 1: To win at the Commonwealth Games still supersedes any win
- 0:44Speaker 1: in a national competition. To be the best swimmer from
- 0:47Speaker 1: amongst nations like Australia or England or any of the
- 0:50Speaker 1: other seventy four nations present is a big thing. By
- 0:53Speaker 1: the way, this is a record attendance of countries now
- 0:56Speaker 1: when Christier is hosted. Back in nineteen seventy four, they
- 0:58Speaker 1: were called the Friendly Games. And I've been watching these
- 1:01Speaker 1: games on TV three and also on Sky with the
- 1:03Speaker 1: crowd goes wild, team right, and they've got that vibe
- 1:07Speaker 1: of the Friendly Games. They celebrate the great they celebrate
- 1:10Speaker 1: the sport, but also the wacky, the loose and the
- 1:12Speaker 1: fun aspects of the games. Their tongues are firmly in
- 1:14Speaker 1: their cheeks. It's a good watch. And the reason it's
- 1:18Speaker 1: a good watch at seven o'clock at night, it's a
- 1:20Speaker 1: healthy antidote to their cynical and world weary news. We
- 1:24Speaker 1: get day in and day out from a globe mired
- 1:28Speaker 1: and difficulty.
