- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone, and welcome to my
- 0:20cottage bedroom. So right now the camera is
- 0:24propped up on a box that is sitting in my window sill and I
- 0:29had to take out the fly screen. So I recorded this once already
- 0:32and there was like a family that was buzzing around me and like
- 0:36buzzing in front of the viewfinder or like in front of
- 0:39the lens. And it was so distracting and
- 0:41annoying. So I'm hoping that this doesn't
- 0:43happen again. But this is take two.
- 0:45But yes, so welcome to my month of remote recording.
- 0:49I am hoping that all of this goes well.
- 0:51I'm hoping that the sound is OK. I'm sure it's fine for the
- 0:54video, but I am worried about the podcast.
- 0:57Obviously the podcast audio. It's just a different experience
- 1:00having something that is audio first when you're like consuming
- 1:03it versus video. You're like more down for kind
- 1:06of shit audio quality. I did buy this mic, but I don't
- 1:09think it's like the best. So hopefully it's OK.
- 1:12What a few days to have off from the Daily News podcast.
- 1:17There has been so much that happened.
- 1:19I really had to pick and choose my stories.
- 1:22Holy shit. But of course, we have to start
- 1:25with everything going on with Brooke Schofield.
- 1:27OK, so influencer Brooke Schofield is facing intense
- 1:31backlash after her racist past tweets resurfaced this week.
- 1:36So these apparently have resurfaced before.
- 1:40When I was doing research for this, I did see a few articles
- 1:43that were written in like February that were talking about
- 1:46her tweets. So I think this year's the first
- 1:48time that they've ever been covered because obviously this
- 1:51is the first time that Brooke has, you know, been really
- 1:53famous and canceled is so successful her podcast and
- 1:56stuff. So it makes sense that it wasn't
- 1:58really newsworthy, quote UN quote until now.
- 2:01OK, so I'm not going to read the tweets, but all these tweets
- 2:04came out from like 2012 to 2015 of Brooke saying really racist
- 2:08things, you know, supporting Donald Trump, all of these
- 2:12things. And I did want to read one tweet
- 2:15that everyone is kind of saying is like the most telling.
- 2:18So this tweet is about the murder of Trayvon Martin.
- 2:22And it reads from Brooke. Guarantee if Zimmerman shot a
- 2:25white guy, this wouldn't even be a story.
- 2:28News flash, this wasn't a crime of racism.
- 2:30It was self-defense, which is objectively untrue.
- 2:35It was cold blooded murder. So, you know, people are, of
- 2:40course, very upset. They've been calling on her to
- 2:43address these tweets, and after a few days of silence,
- 2:47essentially, she finally addressed them.
- 2:49She made a tick tock. And in it she said, You guys, I.
- 2:52Have had a lot to say about accountability lately and how
- 2:54important it is and how far it can go.
- 2:57And I feel like I'm not taking my own advice.
- 2:59Obviously right now. You guys have seen the tweets
- 3:01that are circulating around. They unfortunately are not fake.
- 3:05Those are real tweets, like real things that I said.
- 3:08She then talked about how she's like not a neppo baby.
- 3:10She said a lot of her comments are like, oh, of course this
- 3:12neppo baby is racist. And she was like, no guys, I had
- 3:15addict parents and I was adopted by my grandparents and my
- 3:19grandpa was like a raging Republican.
- 3:21And that was like just the majority of the video was her
- 3:25defending that she's not a neppo baby and her grandpa was a
- 3:28Republican. And it was such a bizarre
- 3:32deflection, especially because I don't know about you guys, but
- 3:34like I never saw anybody talk about how Brooke is a neppo
- 3:38baby. I have not seen that comment.
- 3:40I think it is fairly well known if you are in the fandom of
- 3:45cancelled or just even like vaguely follow the cancelled
- 3:48podcast and Brooke it all part of her story.
- 3:51Like something that is very pivotal to her story or like
- 3:53very pivotal is not the right word, but like very cemented in
- 3:57her story is that she had attic parents.
- 4:00Like that is a very well known fact.
- 4:03She told that story. And then she also said she was
- 4:05about 17 or 18 at the time of those tweets.
- 4:08Honest to God, you guys, it wasn't until like even after
- 4:11college that I really started telling shift my way of
- 4:14thinking. And there are people in my life
- 4:16who I might have looked up to forever.
- 4:17Who I do not agree with, and I think it's amazing now that
- 4:21people are like learning earlier on about politics and like
- 4:24forming their own opinions outside of like what their
- 4:27parents think or what they're hearing or whatever it is.
- 4:30But I that just wasn't the case for me.
- 4:32Whatever I heard, I passed. On she also started crying,
- 4:37which made me roll my eyes. It was just in general a
- 4:41shockingly bad response, especially for someone whose
- 4:45entire career is built off of being like chronically online
- 4:49and talking about like quote UN quote drama and other creators
- 4:53and things like that. It was truly a shockingly bad
- 4:57response. Obviously did not go over well.
- 4:59And a day later, she actually ended up posting a couple of
- 5:03responses because people were like, what the hell is this?
- 5:07So she admitted that her first video quote missed the mark and
- 5:11that her reason for talking so much about her grandpa being a
- 5:14Republican was to provide context and not shift the blame.
- 5:19She talked about how it wasn't until the murder of George Floyd
- 5:21that she started to understand the prevalence of hate crimes.
- 5:25And then she also said that she did her college thesis on racial
- 5:28disparity in public health. And I think that was as a way to
- 5:32explain that she started to do the work once she kind of got
- 5:37better educated. I'm not really sure why she
- 5:40brought that up, but she did. Then she posted two more videos.
- 5:44So the first one was in response to a commenter saying she should
- 5:47donate to the Trayvon Martin Foundation, but she said she
- 5:49already did. And then the other was her
- 5:54responding to a comment asking her why she liked a photo of
- 5:58Donald Trump recently. So I am not kidding.
- 6:01Amid all of this, Brooke liked a photo of Aidan Ross with Trump.
- 6:06So Aidan Ross posted this on Instagram.
- 6:09He was standing with Donald Trump and it was like a photo,
- 6:11like endorsing him. It was a photo of Aidan Ross,
- 6:14like celebrating Trump. I think the caption was like
- 6:16Make America Great Again. Like it was a positive photo of
- 6:21Aidan and Trump. And Brooke liked that within I
- 6:25think like 24 hours of her issuing this apology.
- 6:29The first video, I don't know if the like came before or after,
- 6:32but regardless, that entire video, like I said, was about
- 6:35how her grandpa was like a Republican and she's not a
- 6:38Republican and she doesn't kind of have those same like beliefs
- 6:42or morals. And then she likes that picture.
- 6:45It was just so bizarre. So she said in response to this
- 6:50that she has publicly stated that she is in support of Kamala
- 6:54Harris and that she was just mindlessly scrolling and saw
- 6:58quote, the last person in the entire world that I would think
- 7:00would be in the room with Trump, with Trump.
- 7:02So I was like, this is crazy. And then I guess she liked it.
- 7:05So far, there has been some commercial blowback for Brooke,
- 7:09as far as we know. So she had a collaboration with
- 7:12a clothing brand, Boys Lie that went live last week off the back
- 7:15of like, you know, her viral Clinton Kane series where she
- 7:19exposed him as a liar. And the clothing brand, I'm not
- 7:23sure if they've ever done like true collaborations like this
- 7:26before, but they did send clothes to Ariana Maddox and she
- 7:31did wear them like during scandival.
- 7:32And she did wear them to the reunion where they talked about
- 7:35scandival like she wore them to and from and she was paparazzi
- 7:37photo, you know, photo photographed wearing them.
- 7:41So they do kind of this brand just like capitalize on these
- 7:44moments. So they issued a statement.
- 7:46They wrote, we are in a weird position right now.
- 7:48We didn't want to end the weekend without saying that.
- 7:50We hear you, we see you, and we are adamantly working on a
- 7:52solution. We understand the severity and
- 7:55urgency behind addressing the concerns around our latest
- 7:57collaboration in a way that will align with our values as we have
- 8:01as a brand and our unwavering dedication to all of you.
- 8:04It is an understatement how grateful we are for the Boys.
- 8:06Live fam. We appreciate your patience as
- 8:09we navigate this with the utmost respect, respect, respect.
- 8:14And then they just kind of went on to talk about, you know, how
- 8:17their brand was founded and what they stand for and the
- 8:20organizations. They didn't like name the
- 8:22organizations, but they said they have like a highlight on
- 8:23their Instagram or they talk about different organizations
- 8:25that they support and stuff like that.
- 8:28So yes, that is the Brooke Schofield saga so far.
- 8:32I do think that Brooke and Tana will address this on cancelled.
- 8:36I'm interested to see if they come back this week.
- 8:38I'm not sure what day cancelled drops, but yeah, I wouldn't be
- 8:42surprised if they take a week or two off just to kind of figure
- 8:45out how to deal with this. I feel really fucking bad for
- 8:48her followers who are black and people of color.
- 8:51And it's an understatement to say that this just keeps
- 8:54happening. But like, it just keeps
- 8:56happening. One of my friends said, I don't
- 8:59think I can trust any white influencers anymore.
- 9:01And I feel like that's a completely valid sentiment.
- 9:05OK, the next story that I have for you guys also went wildly
- 9:09viral for the stupidest reason. This is a little bit of a levity
- 9:13after that really heavy story. So Reagan 777 is facing quote UN
- 9:20quote backlash or like drama for having a flop of a birthday
- 9:25party. And it wasn't even really a
- 9:27flop. So influencer Reagan Corsi's
- 9:31birthday party went viral this weekend after a smaller creator
- 9:34named Marina Saavedra said that she didn't have fun at Reagan's
- 9:38birthday party. So if you guys don't remember,
- 9:40Reagan is the one who made that TikTok that went absolutely
- 9:44viral recently. She was already a big
- 9:45influencer, but she went really, really viral when she showed the
- 9:49signs at that pizza slime revolve coach stage coach
- 9:53Stagecoach. Sorry, I'm so jet lagged.
- 9:56You guys almost didn't do this episode today because I'm like
- 9:59so so jet lagged Stagecoach after party where one of the
- 10:04signs was like go this way if you have over a million
- 10:07followers and the other side was like go this way if you have
- 10:10under a million followers. So that video absolutely blew
- 10:13up. And then recently you guys might
- 10:15remember I talked about it on mini scroll but she was accused
- 10:18of killing her cat like neglecting her cat and it dying
- 10:22when she lived in a creator house years ago.
- 10:24So that's what I know of Reagan. So she had a birthday party this
- 10:28time she is not the drama however.
- 10:31So Marina was a plus one and she did an OOTD like leading up to
- 10:37this birthday party and she seemed really excited for the
- 10:39birthday party and she was like I'm going to Reagan 777's
- 10:42birthday. So for contacts, Reagan has like
- 10:448 million followers and Marina has 50,000.
- 10:47So someone asked her in the comments basically like, how did
- 10:49the party go? Like how was it 'cause she was
- 10:51obviously excited to go as a + 1 to this huge influencer birthday
- 10:55party. And she responded that it like
- 10:57wasn't great. She didn't have a lot of fun.
- 10:59So she got a lot of comments about that and she decided to
- 11:02make a video explaining why. In this video where she explains
- 11:04it, she put this now notorious clip of like the squeaky
- 11:08sneakers, like that sound effect over the top of a pan of the
- 11:13club. And it looked like a pretty
- 11:14empty club. And she basically talked about
- 11:17how like over 400 people were invited but that it was like
- 11:20nearly empty. And she also said that her
- 11:23expectations were not met. So she said that she used to
- 11:26work for Bumble and when they threw influencer events, they
- 11:30would pay for everyone's food, the bar tab and Ubers.
- 11:36And this is such a wild and like this.
- 11:40It like misses the mark so much. Like this is such a wild
- 11:43comparison because when you go to like a Bumble event, like a
- 11:47brand event, like the point is, it's APR marketing event.
- 11:51Like the point is that they're inviting media and influencers
- 11:53and they're hoping that they have such a good time that they
- 11:56treat them to this like VIP experience that those
- 11:59influencers and that media go back and we'll give them free
- 12:04positive PR, right? So they'll talk about the brand
- 12:06positively or if it's media, they'll write about the brand,
- 12:10they'll mention they're more likely to mention them in
- 12:11articles and things like that. So like that's the point of
- 12:15that. So yes, they do pay for all of
- 12:17your stuff. They're not going to invite you
- 12:18to event that's like for work, like a work event, basically
- 12:21taking time out of your work day that you're not getting paid for
- 12:25that time. Usually some influencers, if
- 12:27they're big enough to get paid, but you know, like you're not
- 12:29typically getting paid. So yeah, they're not going to
- 12:31expect you then to like pay for your own drinks at a party that
- 12:35they're throwing or to pay for your own food and things like
- 12:37that. Whereas like Reagan's birthday
- 12:39party is not like APR event. Like it's not like a marketing
- 12:42initiative for her. Like it's just her birthday
- 12:44party. Like I don't think it's unusual.
- 12:46Maybe if it's someone's like, you know, 30th or 40th or like
- 12:49really, really big birthday, they might have, you know, it
- 12:52might be a sit down dinner that they've paid for or like a bar
- 12:55tab or something. But this was like her random
- 12:5722nd birthday. OK so anyways Reagan started
- 13:01getting bullied in her comments for having a flop birthday party
- 13:05which is how Marina referred to it.
- 13:07So she responded basically in this video and she was like you
- 13:10were a + 1. Like leave me alone.
- 13:12Why are you trying to take away my sparkle on my special day?
- 13:16All I wanted to do was have fun with my friends on my birthday.
- 13:19She also said she tried to reach out to Marina personally and
- 13:23also, of course, called Marina's video clout chasing.
- 13:26So Marina then made another follow up saying that she was
- 13:30getting bullied by Reagan for not liking her birthday party.
- 13:33And she shared these like, quote UN quote receipts to prove like
- 13:36why she had the expectations that she had, which in my
- 13:39opinion just kind of proved like nothing.
- 13:42Like she showed like the poster of her birthday party.
- 13:44And she was like, see, it's like, OK, it's just like the
- 13:46invite. I don't know.
- 13:49And then Marina also said in this final video that Reagan
- 13:52like came into her live. So I guess Marina goes live
- 13:55every day. She said that Reagan like came
- 13:57into her live and saw that all these people were commenting
- 14:00really hateful things to Marina. And instead of asking like
- 14:03Reagan asking her fans to stop or her supporters to stop like
- 14:08bullying her on live, she just started commenting like open my
- 14:11DM, like can you open my DM or whatever?
- 14:13Because like I said in her first video or in Reagan's like follow
- 14:17up video, she had said that she tried to reached out to her.
- 14:20So I guess that's what she was doing.
- 14:21Anyways, so that's that. I think Marina's turned off her
- 14:24comments, at least she had when I most recently checked.
- 14:27It's such a dumb like drama saga, but I can't even stress
- 14:32enough how much this blew up. Like this went everywhere on
- 14:35TikTok. Everyone was making videos
- 14:37responding to this. And I think that's just because
- 14:41it was just like the audacity. Like, you know, birthday parties
- 14:43are like a protected event the same way that, like weddings are
- 14:46almost where it's like you just kind of have to like, grin and
- 14:48bear it and like cop it. Like no matter what the birthday
- 14:50girl wants to do, like you do it.
- 14:53So like if you went to someone's birthday and you didn't like it,
- 14:54you didn't have fun. Like whatever, she had fun.
- 14:57It was her birthday. Why are you trying to go on
- 14:59TikTok and like, quote UN quote, expose her birthday party as a
- 15:02flop? So people took like great
- 15:04offense to this and it really blew up.
- 15:06Anyways, the next story that I have for you guys is that Tati
- 15:09Westbrook has settled her Halo beauty lawsuit and has actually
- 15:14exited the brand. So after four years, Tati has
- 15:17officially settled her Halo Beauty lawsuit with former
- 15:20business partner Clark Swanson. She revealed this news in an
- 15:24August 1st video, saying that she is also stepping down from
- 15:27the brand as part of the settlement.
- 15:29The lawsuit came after Swanson accused Tati and her husband
- 15:32James of breaching their agreement when she launched Tati
- 15:35Beauty. According to Swanson, Tati and
- 15:38her husband claimed that any beauty related brands that they
- 15:41wanted to launch would be launched under the Halo Beauty
- 15:45umbrella. So when Tati launched her makeup
- 15:47company Tati Beauty independently, he sued them.
- 15:51So Tati Beauty was her makeup brand with like the palette.
- 15:53It was like neutrals, volume one or whatever.
- 15:55Everybody really liked that. And Halo Beauty was her vitamin
- 16:00line that caused by sister. In case you remember just that,
- 16:04that little piece of drama by sister, you might, I've heard of
- 16:07it. It was definitely like the
- 16:09lawsuit situation was more complicated than that.
- 16:11We covered it a lot on site on Centennial's website,
- 16:15centennialworld.com. But I actually could do a deep
- 16:18dive if you guys want, like an Internet history deep dive into
- 16:21like Halo Beauty by Sister, this lawsuit, like how that all
- 16:25panned out. Let me know if you're interested
- 16:27in that. But yes, Tati also revealed in
- 16:30this video that she will be bringing Tati Beauty back
- 16:34independently. So that is a chapter closed, I
- 16:38guess. No more Halo Beauty.
- 16:40OK, And the last thing that I wanted to mention, you guys, I
- 16:43don't know if you've seen, but a new reality TV show has been
- 16:47announced. It is called The Secret Lives of
- 16:51Mormon Wives. And this could not be more on
- 16:55brand like this show could not marry my interests more.
- 16:59I am so freaking excited. So it's a new Hulu show.
- 17:03It's been announced it will follow a group of Mormon
- 17:05influencers who were involved in that TikTok swinging scandal
- 17:09from a couple of years ago. I am so excited.
- 17:12I am so fascinated by Mormon influencers.
- 17:15And I think that is like a much more common sentiment
- 17:19fascination now with TikTok, with the rise of TikTok because
- 17:23like that whole crew that like Nissan, TikTok is just so
- 17:27popular. But the cast, so the cast will
- 17:30be killer. Frankie Paul seems to be like
- 17:33the central cast member, which I think is an interesting choice.
- 17:36So she's a huge TikTok influencer.
- 17:38Like it makes sense on that on one hand.
- 17:41And like she was very central to this scandal.
- 17:43However, she also, I believe it was just last year, was
- 17:49arrested, I think, for something like child abuse, like something
- 17:53really, really dark and heavy. I know we did cover it on the
- 17:56podcast on viral news, but yeah. So she seems to be kind of like
- 18:00the central cast member. And then other members include
- 18:03Whitney Leavitt, Layla Wessel, Demi Eggman, Michaela Matthews,
- 18:08Jennifer Affleck, Macy Neely and Jesse Naktora.
- 18:13I hope I said that right. So I am so freaking excited.
- 18:16I think when this releases, I will do probably like a full
- 18:20deep dive the way that we did with, like, baby reindeer.
- 18:22I hope, I hope it comes out all at once.
- 18:24It might not. And it's kind of similar to the
- 18:26Skippity toilet stuff where it's like Hollywood tapping into like
- 18:30the TikTok or like, you know, online cultural zeitgeist like
- 18:33the new age media. And I think it's like about
- 18:36time. But this is going to, I hope
- 18:39it's going to be good. I hope it's going to be good.
- 18:42Anyways guys that's it for mini scroll today.
- 18:44Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate review
- 18:48and subscribe. It means so much.
- 18:49I really hope that this sound and everything is fine.
- 18:52I hope that you couldn't hear outside too much.
- 18:54There's like cicadas and birds and whatever 'cause we're you
- 18:57know in cottage country here in Canada, but I'm sure it might be
- 19:00like a nice ambient like ASMR vibe.
- 19:03Anyways, thank you so much for listening.
- 19:05I love you guys and I will talk to you tomorrow.
- 19:07Bye.
