- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to another episode of Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and today we're doing a quick review of one of my favorite question words. Luna: Ooh, which one? We've done a few lately — bila, di mana, mana. I loved those. Lucas: Exactly. Today we're revisiting kenapa — the word for why. And since a few of you have been asking about it, we're going to practice it with some real-life situations. Luna: Why is always a good word. So, just to get me warmed up, how do I say why again? Lucas: Kenapa. Simple as that. Kenapa. Luna: Kenapa. Got it. So if I want to ask why someone is coming, I say... kenapa kamu datang? Lucas: Perfect. Kenapa kamu datang? And if someone asks you that, you can answer with sebab — because. Like, saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa kamu. Luna: Oh, that's sweet. So that means, I came because I wanted to meet you. Saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa kamu. Lucas: You got it. And if you don't know the reason, just say saya tidak tahu — I don't know. Simple. Luna: Saya tidak tahu. That's one of my favorites. I use it all the time in real life. Lucas: Same here. And kenapa dia menangis? Why is she crying? A useful one for empathy situations. Luna: Kenapa dia menangis? Hmm, maybe because she watched that sad movie again. Lucas: Maybe. So today we're going to put these together in a tiny story, so you can hear them in context. But first — quick honest thing. A handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these episodes. Luna: Yeah, it's true. We keep this whole show ad-free because of that. Even a small tip helps keep the lights on. Lucas: So if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay, and you want to keep it going, you can find us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. No pressure, just an option. Luna: Totally. Now back to kenapa. Let's start with the basics again. Kenapa. Lucas: Kenapa. And remember, you can use it alone as a question, like just why? Or with a sentence. Kenapa kamu datang? Luna: Kenapa kamu datang? Now, what if I want to ask why he is crying? That was kenapa dia menangis? Lucas: Exactly. Kenapa dia menangis? And the answer might be sebab dia sedih — because he is sad. But we haven't learned sedih yet, so let's keep it simple. Luna: Right, right. So the main pattern is kenapa plus a question. And to answer, you use sebab. So, kenapa kamu datang? Saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa kamu. Lucas: Beautiful. You're already putting the pieces together. Let's do a tiny scene. Imagine Luna, you're at a coffee shop and you see a friend. You ask, kenapa kamu datang? She answers, saya datang sebab saya mahu minum kopi. Luna: Oh, that's a nice one — I came because I wanted to drink coffee. Saya datang sebab saya mahu minum kopi. Lucas: Exactly. And if you don't know why she's there, you could say, saya tidak tahu. Simple and honest. Luna: Saya tidak tahu. That's perfect. So now, let's do a little role reversal. You ask me why I'm here, and I'll answer. Lucas: Okay, kenapa kamu datang? Luna: Saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa awak. And awak is another way to say you, right? We've used kamu before, but I've heard awak too. Lucas: Yes, both are common. Kamu is a bit more general, awak is a bit softer sometimes. Both work. Saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa awak — I came because I wanted to meet you. Luna: Great. So kenapa is the question, sebab is the because. And if you want to be extra polite, you might say maaf, saya tidak tahu — sorry, I don't know. Lucas: Nice addition. Maaf, saya tidak tahu. So let's say we have a little mystery. Someone is crying — kenapa dia menangis? Maybe she lost her phone. We don't know. So we say, saya tidak tahu. Luna: Saya tidak tahu. That's a good pair. Kenapa dia menangis? Saya tidak tahu. Now, let's do a quick fire practice. I'll say a question, you answer with sebab, then translate. Lucas: Okay, kenapa kamu belajar Bahasa Melayu? Luna: Saya belajar sebab saya suka. I study because I like it. And I love that we can use suka from that episode. Lucas: Perfect. Kenapa kamu suka kopi? Why do you like coffee? Luna: Saya suka kopi sebab ia sedap. I like coffee because it's delicious. Sedap — that's tasty, right? Lucas: Yes, sedap is a great word. So today we've got kenapa, the question; sebab, the because; and you can combine them with what you already know. Kenapa kamu datang? Saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa kamu. Luna: Saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa kamu. I love that sentence. It's so warm. Now, let's do one more with dia. Kenapa dia pergi? Why did he go? Lucas: Good one. Kenapa dia pergi? And you could say, sebab dia letih — because he was tired. But letih is a new word, so let's keep it simple. Saya tidak tahu. Luna: Right, saya tidak tahu. So we've covered kenapa, kamu datang, sebab, and jumpa. I'm feeling pretty confident. Lucas: You should be. Let's do one more quick scene. You're at a party, someone asks you why you're there. Kenapa kamu datang? Luna: Saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa kawan-kawan. I came because I wanted to meet friends. Kawan is friend, right? Lucas: Yes, kawan is friend. And you just made that sentence from memory. That's fantastic. Luna: Well, I had a good teacher. So, to wrap up, let's practice the main phrases one more time. Kenapa? Lucas: Kenapa. And you can say it with a rising intonation, like you're curious. Kenapa? Luna: Kenapa? Now, kenapa kamu datang? Lucas: Kenapa kamu datang? And the answer, saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa kamu. Luna: Saya datang sebab saya mahu jumpa kamu. And if I don't know, saya tidak tahu. Lucas: Perfect. And kenapa dia menangis? — just to remember the dia form. Luna: Kenapa dia menangis? Saya tidak tahu. Maybe she's happy crying. Lucas: Could be. So that's our quick review of kenapa. You've got the question word, the sebab answer, and a few useful sentences. Practice these till we chat again. Luna: Yes, and if you want more, you know where to find us. Until next time, selamat tinggal — well, that's goodbye, right? Lucas: That's right. Selamat tinggal. And thanks for listening to Learn Malay with Fexingo.
