- 0:22SPEAKER_00: One of my very best friends is a guy named Eric Elder.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: He's a musician, author, and a creative genius who runs the Ranch.org.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: It's a spiritual retreat center on the internet.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: A few years ago, Eric and I were on a Zoom call and he showed me how he keeps motivated to finish the books that he started writing.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: And on this call, he held up another person's book, and to the front of that book, he had taped a mock-up of the cover for the book that he was writing.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: He already knew in advance the print size of the book that he wanted to write, so he made sure to choose another print book of the exact same size so the cover would fit.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Now I thought this was a pretty genius idea, and I have been doing the same thing ever since.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: So anytime that I'm working on a book, I always have the cover designed as early as I can in the process.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And then I find another print book of the same size that my book is going to be, and I tape a printout of my cover to the front of that book, and I keep it on my desk during the whole writing and publishing process.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: And what this does is it helps make the book tangible and real to you instead of just a file that sits on your computer.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: It also helps you make it through the rough spots in the writing and the editing and the publishing processes whenever you get discouraged or a little bit tired.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: And I think when you keep the vision of the final product clear in your mind and it's and a mock-up of that is sitting right there on your desk, you're going to feel much more motivated to keep on writing and to make it through those rough patches.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: If you're working on a book project, do you have the cover designed yet?
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And have you printed it out and attached it to another book of the same size so you can keep your vision clear and have a tangible idea of what your book is going to look and feel like when it's published.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: By the way, you can find out more about my great friend Eric Elder and his books, music, and more by visiting theRanch.org.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening, and I'll see you tomorrow.
