- 0:03Speaker 1: This is In the Locker Room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and Willie Colon on Steelers Nation Radio, brought to you
- 0:11Speaker 1: in part by the Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
- 0:14Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop.steelers.com.
- 0:18Speaker 1: And by your neighborhood Ford store, the F-150 is the
- 0:22Speaker 1: official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 0:27Speaker 2: And thank you very much for being with us in
- 0:29Speaker 2: the locker room with Willie Colon and Max Starks.
- 0:32Speaker 3: I'm Rob King. Before we launch into the show, there's
- 0:35Speaker 3: a lot to get to.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I just have one question for my friend Max Starks. Max,
- 0:42Speaker 2: if you thought any one of the three of us, you, Willie,
- 0:47Speaker 2: or me, would be having technical difficulties with a laptop
- 0:51Speaker 2: or whatever, who would your selection be?
- 0:54Speaker 4: I mean, I probably, Rob, would have said you before
- 1:01Speaker 4: what Willie's going through currently.
- 1:03Speaker 2: That would be, under almost any circumstance, an outstanding guess. And,
- 1:10Speaker 2: you know, my technical deficiencies are well known among my
- 1:15Speaker 2: circle of friends. So it is with sadness that I
- 1:21Speaker 2: report that Willie Colon cannot see you right now.
- 1:26Speaker 3: And I can on Zoom.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Because, Willie, Max Starks is wearing a Florida Gators helmet.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Over the top of that helmet, he has the earbud
- 1:38Speaker 2: so he can hear us. And somewhere in there, I
- 1:41Speaker 2: don't know where, is the microphone. You got it jammed
- 1:44Speaker 2: up over your eye.
- 1:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Willie, you're missing a sight. You're missing a sight, Willie.
- 1:50Speaker 5: I'm not surprised Max is extra committed to the Gators
- 1:53Speaker 5: this week or any time in life. I don't know
- 1:56Speaker 5: if you noticed, at one point, well, not one point,
- 1:59Speaker 5: but this did happen, I was It was Ohio State
- 2:03Speaker 5: versus Florida Gators, Chris Leak at quarterback, and Troy Smith
- 2:07Speaker 5: was the quarterback for Ohio State. Max took me to
- 2:10Speaker 5: my first pet rally, first ever pet rally. It was
- 2:14Speaker 5: a Florida Gator pet rally. And I walked around this
- 2:17Speaker 5: pet rally. The place was rocking loud. People had live
- 2:19Speaker 5: Gators strapped to tables and saying, The first time I
- 2:24Speaker 5: felt like I was Max's security because people, grown people
- 2:27Speaker 5: walking up to Max, holding babies, telling Max that I
- 2:30Speaker 5: named my child after you. My son is now named
- 2:33Speaker 5: Max because of you, Max Starks. So this man bleeds
- 2:38Speaker 5: orange and blue. So it's no surprise that on a
- 2:40Speaker 5: Friday he's wearing a beloved Florida Gator helmet.
- 2:45Speaker 2: So, Willie, I grew up as a guy who grew
- 2:50Speaker 2: up outside of New York City before I moved upstate
- 2:52Speaker 2: New York.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I was a pro fan. I think if you grow up.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Around New York City, you're probably not a big college
- 2:59Speaker 2: fan unless you went to a college. My dad took
- 3:03Speaker 2: me to an Ivy League game. By the way, the
- 3:05Speaker 2: quarterback of that Ivy League game was Stone Phillips, who
- 3:09Speaker 2: went on to become a big correspondent on TV. That
- 3:12Speaker 2: was the year after Gary Fensick was his wide receiver.
- 3:14Speaker 2: He went on to be a great player for the
- 3:16Speaker 2: 86 Bears. We'll get to them in a moment and
- 3:18Speaker 2: the passing of Mike Ditka. But my wife went to Tennessee.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And then we played football on Saturdays, so high school football.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So I was never a college fan. I wasn't home
- 3:29Speaker 2: on Saturdays, and I grew up as a pro fan.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So my wife said, all right, we're going to– well,
- 3:35Speaker 2: then we were dating.
- 3:36Speaker 3: We're going to go to a Tennessee game, Tennessee-Auburn. Both
- 3:38Speaker 3: teams were ranked. It was a great game.
- 3:40Speaker 2: So I said, all right, as an hors d'oeuvre, as
- 3:42Speaker 2: an appetizer, I'm going to go to a couple Syracuse
- 3:44Speaker 2: games because we were living in Utica because it wasn't
- 3:46Speaker 2: too far away. My first college game that I went to,
- 3:51Speaker 2: Syracuse played Florida. Florida was ranked like three in the country.
- 3:55Speaker 2: And Syracuse absolutely smoked them. Sorry to report that to you, Max.
- 4:02Speaker 2: They ran a reverse off the opening kickoff, and I'm like, oh,
- 4:04Speaker 2: this is college football. I went to another game. I
- 4:08Speaker 2: went to Michigan. They were playing. They had Desmond Howard.
- 4:12Speaker 2: He did the Heisman pose at the game. And then
- 4:14Speaker 2: I went down to Tennessee-Auburn. So that was my introduction
- 4:17Speaker 2: that year. It was four great games to go to.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And so then I became hooked. I became a college fan.
- 4:25Speaker 2: And because Willie, my wife went to Tennessee. And in
- 4:32Speaker 2: the 90s, the biggest matchup in the SEC was Tennessee-Florida.
- 4:37Speaker 6: It was it.
- 4:39Speaker 2: It was the biggest matchup. And I had to watch
- 4:42Speaker 2: year after year after year as Steve Spurrier outcoached whoever
- 4:48Speaker 2: was coaching for Tennessee. and it didn't matter if they
- 4:52Speaker 2: had Peyton Manning, who they had, Florida always seemed.
- 4:56Speaker 3: To find a way to win.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Is that a trophy game, Rob? Well, so the winner
- 5:05Speaker 2: of that game in those days went to the Orange Bowl,
- 5:08Speaker 2: SEC champion. The loser of that game went to the
- 5:12Speaker 2: Citrus Bowl. So somebody asked Steve Spurrier, he was stumping
- 5:17Speaker 2: around doing his off-season stuff, They said, hey, Coach Spurrier,
- 5:22Speaker 2: he was in Tennessee. You think this is the year
- 5:25Speaker 2: the Volunteers finally get you and win the SEC? And
- 5:28Speaker 2: Spurrier looked at him and said, well, all I know
- 5:30Speaker 2: is you can't spell citrus without UT.
- 5:34Speaker 6: How about that?
- 5:35Speaker 3: Ice cold, Steve Spurrier. I had to watch him every year, man.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I'm like, come on, man. They got eight first-round picks.
- 5:42Speaker 2: They got Peyton Manning at quarterback. Surely this will be
- 5:46Speaker 2: the year. And it wasn't until Peyton left and T.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Martin came. Then they finally won.
- 5:52Speaker 6: Yeah, they won, and it was pretty funny.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Generally speaking, I have to say Florida in hushed tones
- 6:00Speaker 2: around the house. Even more than Alabama. I think my
- 6:04Speaker 2: wife does not care for Florida even more than Alabama.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Well, and you guys let Steve Spurrier leave the state,
- 6:13Speaker 4: you know, since you're now– You guys?
- 6:14Speaker 6: You as a tenant. Yeah, you're a Tennessee fan.
- 6:16Speaker 2: My big game is against University of Chicago, man.
- 6:20Speaker 6: Come on. No, no, no. Don't start now. Don't start now.
- 6:23Speaker 2: By the way, home of the first Heisman Trophy.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Winner, University of Chicago, home of the first Heisman Trophy winner,
- 6:28Speaker 3: Jay Berwanger.
- 6:29Speaker 6: Anyway, go ahead.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Max.
- 6:31Speaker 6: First of all, that is the most useless but interesting.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Fact that you could have thrown out out of all
- 6:37Speaker 4: of this in the middle of this conversation.
- 6:40Speaker 7: Man.
- 6:41Speaker 6: But no, I mean, no, I'm happy.
- 6:43Speaker 4: This is my first time calling a Florida game in
- 6:45Speaker 4: Florida this weekend.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Oh, you're calling it?
- 6:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm calling the Florida-South Carolina game on Saturday. So
- 6:51Speaker 4: I'm pretty pumped up about it.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Man, thanks, man.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's my first time back in the swamp.
- 6:55Speaker 4: That's why I had the helmet on. It was like
- 6:58Speaker 4: reliving that revelry. I'm looking at my game ball, my
- 7:02Speaker 4: first ever game ball in college against LSU on actually
- 7:07Speaker 4: a couple days ago, October 6, 2001.
- 7:11Speaker 6: We got my first game ball. We beat LSU 44-15.
- 7:14Speaker 4: But that's not the most important thing and the reason
- 7:19Speaker 4: why I got this game ball. The reason I got
- 7:21Speaker 4: this game ball is because we threw an interception in
- 7:25Speaker 4: the end zone. We're driving in the first quarter. And
- 7:28Speaker 4: a defensive back picks the ball off in the end zone.
- 7:30Speaker 4: And he's headed up down the sidelines. And I go
- 7:35Speaker 4: and I chase this defensive back. And I actually take
- 7:38Speaker 4: him down and tackle him. Preventing a touchdown because nobody
- 7:41Speaker 4: else is in the area. The significance about that tackle
- 7:45Speaker 4: and this game ball is.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Oh, yes. I know this. I noticed that.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Yeah, the defensive back from LSU that made that interception
- 7:54Speaker 4: and was trying to run it back was the one
- 7:57Speaker 4: and only Ryan Clark.
- 7:59Speaker 3: No.
- 8:01Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 8:01Speaker 4: I tackled RC on an interception, and my first ever
- 8:06Speaker 4: game ball came from that game and that play specifically
- 8:10Speaker 4: uh in that game so i always love to remind
- 8:14Speaker 4: ryan clark that he's slower than me that is that
- 8:17Speaker 4: is every time i get a chance to.
- 8:18Speaker 2: First of all i love the we through an interception
- 8:22Speaker 2: not the quarterback to intercept very nice max uh it
- 8:25Speaker 2: reminds me willie that i i only played one way
- 8:29Speaker 2: i didn't play both ways but i think i was
- 8:32Speaker 2: our leading tackler and I played quarterback.
- 8:34Speaker 3: So that's probably not a good statistic right there. So
- 8:38Speaker 3: probably not good.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Probably not a good stat. So, hey, listen, guys, lots
- 8:45Speaker 2: to get to. You know, I got to say, really
- 8:48Speaker 2: sad to hear that Mike Ditka passed away.
- 8:52Speaker 3: I mean, you know, just an icon.
- 8:54Speaker 2: You know, obviously a Pittsburgh guy, grew up in Aliquippa,
- 8:59Speaker 2: went to Pitt, you know, just– the hardest working person
- 9:04Speaker 2: anybody had ever been around at the Pitt campus. Everybody,
- 9:07Speaker 2: he was a two-way guy. Everybody, Mike Ditka included, thought
- 9:10Speaker 2: he was going to be a defensive end in the NFL.
- 9:13Speaker 2: And the only team that wanted him as a tight
- 9:15Speaker 2: end instead of a defensive end was the Bears. And
- 9:18Speaker 2: of course, he went on to become not only a
- 9:20Speaker 2: Hall of Fame player, you know, one of the signature,
- 9:23Speaker 2: one of the greatest players ever at the tight end position.
- 9:26Speaker 3: And then the Bears, and then, you.
- 9:27Speaker 2: Know, the Saturday Night Live skits and all that stuff,
- 9:30Speaker 2: Ditka and all the other stuff. And I'm just, you know,
- 9:33Speaker 2: went on to a TV career, but just, I mean,
- 9:35Speaker 2: it's harder to think of larger figures in the history
- 9:40Speaker 2: of the NFL than Mike Ditka.
- 9:43Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 9:44Speaker 5: So me and Max had the opportunity to meet Mike
- 9:48Speaker 5: every Superbowl.
- 9:48Speaker 7: He does the Dick and.
- 9:50Speaker 5: Jaws cigar party, which has kind of become a staple
- 9:53Speaker 5: for Super Bowl weekend. And I had the opportunity over
- 9:58Speaker 5: the years to actually sit and talk to Mike Dicker,
- 10:02Speaker 5: which is surreal.
- 10:02Speaker 6: And smoke cigars with Mike Dicker.
- 10:04Speaker 5: And smoke cigars, which is like surreal when you think
- 10:08Speaker 5: about it. And everything you mentioned, Rob, an iconic figure,
- 10:14Speaker 5: played obviously the 85 Bears.
- 10:16Speaker 7: I think he did in his own professional career. you
- 10:19Speaker 7: ball doing that.
- 10:19Speaker 5: And so when he was a true Ironman, but once again,
- 10:22Speaker 5: to circle back, when I met a man, it was
- 10:25Speaker 5: awesome to just hear him just talk, you know, just
- 10:28Speaker 5: talk about ball, just talk about the current state of
- 10:30Speaker 5: the NFL life. And, you know, there's, there's some things you,
- 10:35Speaker 5: you know, you, you get things, people get asked like, Hey,
- 10:39Speaker 5: if you had an opportunity to smoke weed with Snoop,
- 10:41Speaker 5: would you take it?
- 10:42Speaker 7: Yes.
- 10:44Speaker 5: If you had an opportunity to smoke a cigar with
- 10:46Speaker 5: Mike Dicker, you smoke a cigar. And it doesn't matter
- 10:48Speaker 5: if you smoke or not. You at least take a
- 10:50Speaker 5: puff or two.
- 10:51Speaker 7: And that's how I felt, man. And there's certain things.
- 10:54Speaker 5: When the opportunity and moment presents itself, you got to
- 10:57Speaker 5: recognize that the opportunity and moment is bigger than you
- 11:00Speaker 5: and your feelings. And so with all that said, you know, he's,
- 11:05Speaker 5: every time I met him, he greeted me with a
- 11:07Speaker 5: handshake and a hug and, and a laugh or a joke,
- 11:10Speaker 5: and we would talk ball, and he would go about
- 11:13Speaker 5: his merry way. But he was always a gentleman, always
- 11:15Speaker 5: a stand-up man, and he will be missed.
- 11:19Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I mean, I echo the same sentiments because
- 11:22Speaker 4: Willie and I shared the same experience, right? I mean,
- 11:25Speaker 4: it was just surreal, you know. A, when you first
- 11:29Speaker 4: get the invitation, right, you feel like you've arrived.
- 11:32Speaker 6: You know, you get an invitation. You've been accepted.
- 11:35Speaker 4: You know, you've been granted two tickets to Dick and
- 11:38Speaker 4: Jaws cigar party.
- 11:39Speaker 6: You're like, what? And then every year you're like, I
- 11:41Speaker 6: got to go.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I get like, I don't even know if I'm going
- 11:43Speaker 4: to Super Bowl, but now I got to go to
- 11:45Speaker 4: Super Bowl because I just got invited to Dick and
- 11:47Speaker 4: Jaws cigar party.
- 11:49Speaker 6: And, you know, you walk around and it's a lot
- 11:52Speaker 6: of legends around.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:53Speaker 6: You know, Mike Dick was a superstar.
- 11:56Speaker 4: So everybody who's everybody that's there at Super Bowl is
- 11:59Speaker 4: in this party.
- 12:01Speaker 6: And then it's like Mike. made it a point, you know,
- 12:04Speaker 6: to go mingle, be whatever.
- 12:05Speaker 4: Because, I mean, he could have just sat off and
- 12:07Speaker 4: kind of been like up on a stage or a
- 12:09Speaker 4: dais or whatever and just kind of waving, right? Like
- 12:11Speaker 4: the Pope, you know, which, funny enough, you talk about
- 12:14Speaker 4: who'd win in a fistfight, Ditka or the Pope?
- 12:17Speaker 6: You know, of course, Ditka, go Bears. You know, like
- 12:20Speaker 6: you think about those SNL skits.
- 12:22Speaker 4: But he was out there and he was also giving
- 12:26Speaker 4: you his recommendations of his favorite cigars in the place.
- 12:29Speaker 6: He had like 30 vendors come in.
- 12:31Speaker 4: But he's like, yep, no, this is the one that
- 12:32Speaker 4: I want to smoke. You want to smoke this one? Okay,
- 12:34Speaker 4: we're smoking this one. Like it was just kind of
- 12:37Speaker 4: cool to just have that kind of one-on-one with him.
- 12:40Speaker 4: And like you said, you just sit down with him,
- 12:42Speaker 4: and there's like all these tables and, you know, the
- 12:44Speaker 4: big cigar trays, ashtrays, and you're just sitting around, and
- 12:48Speaker 4: he's just talking ball, talking about, hey, you know, what
- 12:51Speaker 4: did you think about this?
- 12:52Speaker 6: You know, if I was at tight end, I would
- 12:54Speaker 6: have came and– I would have loved to have blocked
- 12:55Speaker 6: next to you.
- 12:56Speaker 4: You know, like all these just cool phrases and stories
- 12:58Speaker 4: and just such a legendary figure. not only in the league,
- 13:02Speaker 4: but I think just in popular culture, I think, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 4: SNL really popularized them. And, you know, it was something that,
- 13:09Speaker 4: you know, you pick a guy like Mike Dicka, who
- 13:11Speaker 4: was always tough. I still think about the movie kicking
- 13:14Speaker 4: and screaming with Will Ferrell. Do you guys remember that movie?
- 13:17Speaker 6: Oh my God. Hilarious. Cause he got the espresso machine.
- 13:23Speaker 4: They started going head to head with Will Ferrell and
- 13:26Speaker 4: Mike Dicka did not back down to a comedian of
- 13:29Speaker 4: Will Ferrell's ilk.
- 13:30Speaker 6: So it's just, all those kind of cool things.
- 13:32Speaker 4: It's a tremendous loss for the league today because you
- 13:35Speaker 4: had a true ambassador of the game that spanned more
- 13:38Speaker 4: than just football itself. He spanned into popular culture, kids, women, children,
- 13:45Speaker 4: you know, just everybody kind of knew who Mike Ditka was.
- 13:48Speaker 4: And that's, I mean, just like a John Madden type
- 13:51Speaker 4: was to the game of football, like Mike Ditka was
- 13:54Speaker 4: that as well. And so, yeah, it's a sad day.
- 13:58Speaker 4: We know he's been struggling, but we know that he's
- 13:59Speaker 4: in a better place. There's no more pain. He's back
- 14:03Speaker 4: up there with a lot of his 85 bears.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:09Speaker 2: One of the cool things for me in my job
- 14:11Speaker 2: is not getting to know these guys like you did,
- 14:14Speaker 2: but at least getting to sit down with them for
- 14:16Speaker 2: a couple of hours and interview them about things. We
- 14:19Speaker 2: were doing a bunch of pit specials, so I had
- 14:21Speaker 2: a chance to talk to Tony Dorsett and Dan Marino
- 14:26Speaker 2: and Mike Ditka. And his brother Ashton was a really
- 14:29Speaker 2: good athlete too. I don't think he, you know, he
- 14:31Speaker 2: didn't make the NFL or anything, but very good athlete.
- 14:35Speaker 2: His mom, Virginia, very cool to talk to, you know,
- 14:40Speaker 2: and you could see where the toughness came from. I
- 14:42Speaker 2: think it came from mom. And it just, he's just
- 14:46Speaker 2: one of those guys. He's just one of those figures that's,
- 14:50Speaker 2: you know, that's larger than life. And when you think
- 14:53Speaker 2: about the history of the NFL and whether it's Mike
- 14:55Speaker 2: Ditka or, Lawrence Taylor or Jim Brown. They're just certain
- 15:01Speaker 2: guys who are great players, no doubt a Hall of Famer,
- 15:07Speaker 2: but there's an aura about them, a bigness about them
- 15:12Speaker 2: that not every Hall of Famer has.
- 15:14Speaker 3: To me, guys, Mike Ditka had that.
- 15:19Speaker 5: I think for a lot of people, this generation may
- 15:22Speaker 5: not appreciate him, man, but you talk about a dude
- 15:25Speaker 5: who was not only a true Ironman, but really was
- 15:28Speaker 5: a patriot as well. I think a lot of times
- 15:31Speaker 5: when you talk about his, what he meant for the
- 15:34Speaker 5: game of football, you know, you go.
- 15:36Speaker 7: Back to those 85 Bears where.
- 15:38Speaker 5: When him and Buddy Ryan, remember that going through their
- 15:40Speaker 5: little skirmish on the sideline and how a lot of
- 15:43Speaker 5: people thought that would divide a team, but it actually
- 15:47Speaker 5: made the team hungrier, right?
- 15:49Speaker 6: And here we are.
- 15:50Speaker 7: Arguing about Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy and on the sideline.
- 15:54Speaker 5: So it just shows you that, you know, arguments and
- 15:56Speaker 5: discrepancies happen on the sideline, but it's all about attending
- 16:00Speaker 5: the ultimate goal.
- 16:01Speaker 7: So, you know, he was, he was just a man's
- 16:03Speaker 7: man once again.
- 16:04Speaker 5: And I think overall, man, I wish, I don't know
- 16:07Speaker 5: if they do it now, they can't do it, but
- 16:09Speaker 5: like some of those legends of the time kind of
- 16:11Speaker 5: need to go on 30 for 30, where we go
- 16:13Speaker 5: back in time and really see, you.
- 16:15Speaker 7: Know, what they meant to the game of football and
- 16:17Speaker 7: who they.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Were, you know, as a man, I know Nick Saban
- 16:19Speaker 5: has a thing coming out or is out right now,
- 16:22Speaker 5: on ESPN where they kind of talk about him as
- 16:24Speaker 5: a coach and his kind of manic and robust ways.
- 16:28Speaker 5: I would love to see somebody make something of Mike
- 16:30Speaker 5: Dickey because I know it would be damn good.
- 16:34Speaker 6: Absolutely. And I think that's something that you kind of
- 16:37Speaker 6: look at. You know, it was like what they call
- 16:39Speaker 6: the football life too. That would have been great.
- 16:45Speaker 4: I know they've captured interviews, but I think putting a compilation,
- 16:47Speaker 4: I think the biggest thing is like game film, right?
- 16:49Speaker 4: I mean, that's One of the things that's so tough,
- 16:52Speaker 4: because it's like you hear about these guys, but sometimes
- 16:54Speaker 4: you got to see them. And you got to understand that, okay, yes,
- 16:58Speaker 4: this guy talked, but this dude played tough. You know,
- 17:00Speaker 4: I'm looking at something my buddy Keith Reese had sent
- 17:03Speaker 4: it to me about Dick and his buddy Foge Fazio,
- 17:08Speaker 4: who obviously famously Pitt Panthers head coach and everything. But
- 17:10Speaker 4: they were teammates at Pitt in the 50s, and they
- 17:13Speaker 4: both wanted to be dentists. Like, that's why they went
- 17:15Speaker 4: to Pitt, because they were like, we need to go
- 17:17Speaker 4: to a great dental school.
- 17:18Speaker 6: We want to be dentists.
- 17:19Speaker 4: And then all of a sudden, It's like you're more
- 17:21Speaker 4: responsible for taking out teeth in a different way than
- 17:23Speaker 4: you were the way that you initially anticipated. But it's
- 17:27Speaker 4: just like you see these relationships and you hear this history.
- 17:31Speaker 4: I mean, that would have been a great thing to know. Like, hey,
- 17:32Speaker 4: what was your dream? Because not everybody's dream was being
- 17:35Speaker 4: in football. Some of them kind of fall into it
- 17:38Speaker 4: or you find a path and a passion, but you
- 17:39Speaker 4: still go to school for different reasons. And to hear
- 17:42Speaker 4: that Mike Dick wanted to be a dentist is just
- 17:44Speaker 4: hilarious and something that You wouldn't know, and I feel
- 17:47Speaker 4: like a documentary or some type of 30 for 30
- 17:50Speaker 4: football life stories were kind of telling you. You get
- 17:53Speaker 4: to show the film. I mean, Mike Ditka was one
- 17:55Speaker 4: of those guys. He played tight end, but he played
- 17:58Speaker 4: tight end like a defensive end.
- 17:59Speaker 6: You know what I'm saying? He took the fight to you.
- 18:01Speaker 6: He wanted to beat you up.
- 18:03Speaker 4: He didn't care about really catching a football. He was like,
- 18:08Speaker 4: I get to legally beat you within an inch of
- 18:10Speaker 4: your life. And he took that personally. And that's what
- 18:13Speaker 4: created that kind of determination, which then led him to
- 18:16Speaker 4: being a great head coach. And like you said, eventually
- 18:20Speaker 4: the identity of the 85 Bears is through his lens.
- 18:24Speaker 4: He molded and shaped that group.
- 18:27Speaker 6: So, yeah, once again, it's.
- 18:28Speaker 4: A tremendous loss. But what a tremendous man and what
- 18:31Speaker 4: a life well lived by Mike Dicca.
- 18:34Speaker 3: Man's man, as Willie said.
- 18:36Speaker 2: Foge Fazio was, oh, what another beautiful human being that
- 18:39Speaker 2: we lost way too soon.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Great guy. And Keith Reese.
- 18:42Speaker 4: Getting a keith reese shout out that's right my guy
- 18:46Speaker 4: one of the one of.
- 18:47Speaker 2: The great uh photogs in the country one of the
- 18:49Speaker 2: great videographers in the country keith.
- 18:51Speaker 4: Yes yes he'll be he'll be doing our game on
- 18:53Speaker 4: sunday rob is that right yeah yeah because it's the
- 18:56Speaker 4: a crew he's he's on the a crew for cbs so.
- 18:59Speaker 3: Well i'm never down in the field so i never
- 19:00Speaker 3: see those guys i.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Know i know you gotta take a lap in your
- 19:05Speaker 4: walkings when you're nervously figuring out your energy you should
- 19:08Speaker 4: just Walk over and say hello.
- 19:10Speaker 6: Keith's on the opposite sideline.
- 19:12Speaker 3: You know what?
- 19:13Speaker 6: I think I'll do that.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I think I'll pop out and say hi to our
- 19:16Speaker 2: buddy Keith Reese. So farewell to Mike Ditka from us
- 19:20Speaker 2: in the locker room. Just an iconic, iconic figure. When
- 19:24Speaker 2: we return, well, let's lay out what else we have
- 19:27Speaker 2: for you here today. Missy Matthews joining us at 1 o'clock.
- 19:30Speaker 2: We're going to relive what happened last night because that
- 19:34Speaker 2: Tampa Bay team looked like a different team, and that's
- 19:37Speaker 2: who the Steelers are going to be facing tonight. coming
- 19:38Speaker 2: up next week. So Tampa Bay is going to be
- 19:40Speaker 2: the team getting that extra rest. Of course, we're going
- 19:44Speaker 2: to break down the game on Sunday against the Colts
- 19:48Speaker 2: with our big-time matchup of the game. and our around-the-league
- 19:52Speaker 2: weekend predictions. This is when Justin's going to start.
- 19:59Speaker 3: It starts this week. We kind of got in.
- 20:01Speaker 2: There and out of there and wasn't as organized as
- 20:04Speaker 2: it needed to be. Everyone's going to make their upset prediction.
- 20:08Speaker 2: It's got to be an upset, so I'll have the
- 20:10Speaker 2: lines out for everybody. And Justin's going to keep score.
- 20:13Speaker 2: Justin Miller, our esteemed producer, will keep score beginning this week.
- 20:17Speaker 2: Because I think I picked seven upsets last week. No,
- 20:21Speaker 2: I didn't do that. That was my game to the week.
- 20:23Speaker 2: So get ready for your upsets. Get ready for the
- 20:26Speaker 2: big-time matchups. Get ready for Missy Matthews. All that's still
- 20:29Speaker 2: to come. We continue in the locker room here on
- 20:31Speaker 2: the Steelers Audio Network.
- 20:39Speaker 1: This is In the Locker Room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and Willie Colon on Steelers Nation Radio. Brought to you
- 20:46Speaker 1: in part by the Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
- 20:50Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop.steelers.com.
- 20:54Speaker 1: And by your neighborhood Ford store. The F-150 is the
- 20:58Speaker 1: official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Last night, Thursday night football, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- 21:07Speaker 2: Took it to the Dallas Cowboys 24-16. That is back-to-back.
- 21:11Speaker 2: The Cowboys driving late. Dak Prescott throws an interception. Back-to-back weeks.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I mean, they squandered one against the Ravens down in,
- 21:21Speaker 2: what is it, Buenos Aires?
- 21:22Speaker 3: Is that where that game was?
- 21:24Speaker 6: No, no, no.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Rio de Janeiro. Rio de Janeiro, yep. So they blew
- 21:29Speaker 3: that game.
- 21:30Speaker 2: And then this one, I don't know whether this one, Willie,
- 21:34Speaker 2: says more about Tampa Bay or Dallas. But I have
- 21:39Speaker 2: to figure, you know, all the stories about Jalen Daniels,
- 21:42Speaker 2: you know, six years at Kansas and waiting his turn.
- 21:45Speaker 2: It sounds like a team first guy. And the way
- 21:47Speaker 2: he plays, he played with a great deal of poise
- 21:50Speaker 2: last night, I thought. He didn't make any mistakes.
- 21:53Speaker 3: He was not.
- 21:54Speaker 7: Almost.
- 21:55Speaker 3: He played with some reckless.
- 21:56Speaker 6: Was that? He said almost. Yeah, almost.
- 21:59Speaker 2: But he played with some reckless abandon, too. Like, I mean,
- 22:01Speaker 2: you know, without getting crazy about things. You know, he
- 22:06Speaker 2: lowered his shoulder to try to pick up first downs,
- 22:08Speaker 2: and I would imagine he's the kind of guy with
- 22:11Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield probably going to miss at least one more
- 22:15Speaker 2: game the game next week against the Steelers. This is
- 22:17Speaker 2: a guy that they might be able to rally around,
- 22:18Speaker 2: and maybe he has a chance to salvage their season,
- 22:22Speaker 2: or maybe it just says more about the Cowboys. What
- 22:24Speaker 2: was your take on last night's game?
- 22:28Speaker 1: Oh.
- 22:29Speaker 5: I mean, so I'll start with the Bucs. I mean,
- 22:30Speaker 5: for the Bucs, it was a must win. You're 0-4
- 22:33Speaker 5: going into the Cowboys. Nobody gave them a shot. The
- 22:35Speaker 5: only way they could beat the Cowboys was running the ball,
- 22:37Speaker 5: and they did with Bucky Irvin.
- 22:39Speaker 7: I think he rushed for over 165 yards.
- 22:42Speaker 2: 21 for 165, Willie. They just jammed it down their throat.
- 22:47Speaker 2: They ran for 241 yards.
- 22:50Speaker 5: And they actually did it the Steeler way, how we
- 22:51Speaker 5: used to run our powers and sweeps and zones. They
- 22:54Speaker 5: actually just doubled teams across the board and Pulled some guards, man,
- 22:59Speaker 5: found the hole in Bucky Irvin, made him look silly.
- 23:02Speaker 5: And credit Todd Bowles, man, because he's been taking a
- 23:04Speaker 5: lot of flack. I think ESPN or somebody had.
- 23:08Speaker 7: Put out a poll.
- 23:10Speaker 5: As far as a hot seat poll, like what coaches
- 23:12Speaker 5: are in the hot season. I think he was in
- 23:13Speaker 5: the top three. So the response on Thursday night.
- 23:16Speaker 7: Football was big.
- 23:17Speaker 5: And defensively, they played a bend but don't break defense.
- 23:21Speaker 5: They understood that Dak and that offense and what they
- 23:24Speaker 5: can do. could be extremely explosive, and they know they
- 23:27Speaker 5: can put up point bunches. With all that said, man,
- 23:30Speaker 5: just credit the Bucs for just staying scrappy. It was
- 23:33Speaker 5: an easy deck. I mean, the Cowboys tried to throw
- 23:36Speaker 5: them a couple, but even the Bucs were, I mean,
- 23:39Speaker 5: there was some game management situations that you're kind of questionable,
- 23:42Speaker 5: especially out of the tied bowls. But with all that said,
- 23:44Speaker 5: the Bucs found a way to win, and it was
- 23:46Speaker 5: a necessary win in the division. But I think the
- 23:49Speaker 5: main headline is the Cowboys, man. You beat the Texans 34-30. Yes,
- 23:55Speaker 5: it's a short week, but the script was written.
- 23:58Speaker 7: Think about it.
- 23:59Speaker 5: If they beat the Bucs Thursday night, they now have
- 24:03Speaker 5: a 10-game stretch where they can recoup and get healthy
- 24:09Speaker 5: and get ready for the Packers. Possibly Michael Parsons is
- 24:13Speaker 5: waiting for you. You're at the top of the division.
- 24:16Speaker 5: Everything was building up for the Cowboys, and you blow it.
- 24:21Speaker 5: Multiple turnovers. The defense is absolutely atrocious on all levels.
- 24:26Speaker 7: I mean, they can't get a pass rush. The secondary
- 24:28Speaker 7: is horrible.
- 24:29Speaker 5: And Christian Parker, who's their new defensive coordinator, who's supposed
- 24:32Speaker 5: to be this young savant guru or whatever, is looking
- 24:36Speaker 5: small in real time. And the defense, it was just
- 24:39Speaker 5: a poor tackling job out of the Cowboys. And, you know,
- 24:44Speaker 5: this is where the Cowboys are. You know, it's hard
- 24:46Speaker 5: to get behind them when you have an outing like that.
- 24:50Speaker 5: And what's interesting, you know, there's been a lot of
- 24:53Speaker 5: talk about this Cowboys offense. You know, you talk about
- 24:56Speaker 5: Dak and CD and George, what is $ 120 million wrapped
- 24:59Speaker 5: up in between those guys. On top of that, they
- 25:02Speaker 5: did pay Jake Ferguson, who hasn't been, ever since they
- 25:06Speaker 5: paid him, he hasn't played well at all. And then
- 25:09Speaker 5: you talk about Deron Bland on the defensive side, he
- 25:13Speaker 5: hasn't played well as well. So Jerry has... Jerry has
- 25:16Speaker 5: paid everybody, right? Jerry has done his part. He's paid everybody.
- 25:19Speaker 5: He's got a new defensive coordinator. He's upgraded the roster.
- 25:23Speaker 5: He has stayed out of the headlines by being quiet
- 25:26Speaker 5: and saying, hey, I'm going to let the ball speak
- 25:28Speaker 5: for itself.
- 25:29Speaker 7: And there was a big push for this team to.
- 25:32Speaker 5: I mean, a lot of people were thinking of the
- 25:34Speaker 5: Cowboys as a contender, a dark horse, or a potential
- 25:36Speaker 5: NFC playing an NFC championship game because of what they
- 25:40Speaker 5: could do offensively and having a defense that could just be–
- 25:45Speaker 5: and competent and competitive. We have not seen that yet
- 25:48Speaker 5: out of Dallas Cowboys defense. And it's not a Jerry
- 25:51Speaker 5: Jones thing. It's not a Dak Prescott thing. This is
- 25:54Speaker 5: all wrapped around the Dallas Cowboys defense and their inability
- 25:57Speaker 5: to stop the run or pass.
- 25:58Speaker 7: They can't do anything right, and they're getting dinged up
- 26:01Speaker 7: as they go.
- 26:01Speaker 5: So this was a bad loss for the Cowboys, and
- 26:03Speaker 5: I think a lot of heads are going to roll
- 26:05Speaker 5: because of it.
- 26:07Speaker 6: All right there, Willie.
- 26:08Speaker 4: I think, you know, just like we had expectations for
- 26:11Speaker 4: the Rams– You know, I think a lot of expectations
- 26:14Speaker 4: were put on the Cowboys to be that team because
- 26:19Speaker 4: they went and, you know, like you said, you have
- 26:21Speaker 4: $ 120 million tied up there, but you overhauled this defense,
- 26:24Speaker 4: and this defense looks no different than it.
- 26:27Speaker 6: Did a couple of weeks ago.
- 26:30Speaker 4: So it's like– or, I'm sorry, a couple years ago,
- 26:32Speaker 4: and you're like all this money that was tied up
- 26:35Speaker 4: with it has not yielded fruition. You went and got the–
- 26:39Speaker 4: But the philosophy and the coaching scheme does not match.
- 26:42Speaker 4: And so, you know, I look at it and it's just,
- 26:46Speaker 4: you know, once again, even though I'm not a Stephen A. fan,
- 26:49Speaker 4: I still, you know, got to appreciate the troll job
- 26:52Speaker 4: of Stephen A. Smith when it comes to talking about
- 26:55Speaker 4: the Cowboys and just how everything is just the same.
- 27:00Speaker 4: Like it's been 30 years we've been toiling futility. And
- 27:03Speaker 4: like you said, to come out and have the game
- 27:05Speaker 4: that you did a week ago, but then to fall
- 27:07Speaker 4: flat on your face to an 0-4 team, the week
- 27:10Speaker 4: after just says that you're not providing the right culture
- 27:13Speaker 4: for success. You know, you hate to say it, but
- 27:16Speaker 4: that's the reality of the situation.
- 27:20Speaker 3: Willie, it sounded like you wanted to. The only thing
- 27:22Speaker 3: I will say about that is that.
- 27:24Speaker 2: I do wonder, you know, Tampa Bay, again, the two
- 27:29Speaker 2: really disappointing 0-4 teams are Houston. Remember, they started 0-3
- 27:33Speaker 2: last year, and then by the time they came into
- 27:36Speaker 2: Accresure Stadium, they were the one team you didn't want
- 27:38Speaker 2: to face.
- 27:39Speaker 3: You know, they got on a roll.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Now at 0-4, a bigger hole for them. I don't
- 27:43Speaker 2: think anybody thought they were an 0-4 football team. I
- 27:46Speaker 2: don't think Tampa Bay thought they were an 0-4 football team.
- 27:48Speaker 2: So that level of desperation, and, yeah, but the other
- 27:51Speaker 2: thing is, yeah, it's a Thursday night game for Dallas, but, man,
- 27:55Speaker 2: Tampa had to travel to Dallas.
- 27:58Speaker 3: I agree with you, Willie.
- 27:59Speaker 2: I think it says a little something about Tampa, but
- 28:01Speaker 2: I think it says a lot about the Dallas Cowboys.
- 28:04Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think it's unfortunate because for the Cowboys–
- 28:10Speaker 5: the schedule doesn't get easier, right? It tends to kind
- 28:13Speaker 5: of get a little tougher, and right now you were
- 28:16Speaker 5: projected to be the kings of the division.
- 28:19Speaker 7: Right now that's the New York Giants.
- 28:20Speaker 5: So it's just a wacky first month, and it continues
- 28:24Speaker 5: to be a wacky kind of month of football, especially
- 28:28Speaker 5: going into this week because there's some pivotal matchups, and
- 28:31Speaker 5: I know we're going to get into that later. But
- 28:33Speaker 5: the Cowboys right now, I just don't know how, I
- 28:37Speaker 5: just don't know where you turn from here. Because I
- 28:40Speaker 5: don't think Brian Schottenheimer is the problem. Obviously, there's a
- 28:43Speaker 5: big issue defensively. But I think there's more or less
- 28:47Speaker 5: a leadership problem, too. You watch that game, and sure,
- 28:51Speaker 5: they're coming off a– they play the Houstons.
- 28:53Speaker 7: It's a short week. Everybody's tired. They look tired. But
- 28:56Speaker 7: I honestly was expecting Quentin.
- 28:58Speaker 5: Williams or Kenny Clark or Sean Garrett or somebody to
- 29:01Speaker 5: get that– bring that group together on the sideline. I'm like,
- 29:03Speaker 5: all right, enough with the BS. We're playing like absolute
- 29:06Speaker 5: dog poop. How do we just get one drive, right?
- 29:10Speaker 5: How do we just win one drive? Let's get the
- 29:12Speaker 5: ball back to our office because we knew the Cowboys
- 29:14Speaker 5: could score.
- 29:15Speaker 7: And there was a moment at the end of that game,
- 29:17Speaker 7: the last drive, right?
- 29:18Speaker 5: If they stop before Bucky Irving capped off that game,
- 29:21Speaker 5: I think it was like a 20-yard run, whatever it was.
- 29:24Speaker 5: I mean, if they stop the Cowboys, they not only
- 29:27Speaker 5: get the short field, but they get an opportunity. Not
- 29:30Speaker 5: only did the Cowboys get a chance to stop the Bucks, rather,
- 29:33Speaker 5: but they get a short field and the Cowboys now
- 29:35Speaker 5: can go score for the tie.
- 29:37Speaker 7: And possibly the lead. So it was, it was just
- 29:40Speaker 7: bad to see that.
- 29:41Speaker 5: Defense, not one, that one, you can't put your hat
- 29:44Speaker 5: on one play where they stood up and really made
- 29:46Speaker 5: a stance for a Bucs team that was deficient in
- 29:49Speaker 5: multiple areas to come into Jerry's world and run the
- 29:53Speaker 5: ball about it, run the ball down the Cowboys throat was,
- 29:56Speaker 5: was disheartening, man. And, you know, like I said, this,
- 29:59Speaker 5: Dak can't– we're at the point where Dak has to
- 30:01Speaker 5: be perfect for the Cowboys to win, and it shouldn't
- 30:05Speaker 5: be like that when you have that much talent on
- 30:06Speaker 5: one team.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Why is it coming to that? Why does he have
- 30:10Speaker 2: to be perfect? I mean, I know a lot of
- 30:12Speaker 2: the reasons you just laid out. I mean, I would
- 30:14Speaker 2: think this offense should be able to score almost at will.
- 30:18Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Are they feeling the pressure,
- 30:20Speaker 3: do you.
- 30:20Speaker 6: Think, a little bit?
- 30:22Speaker 5: Well, so last night was– so a couple things. he
- 30:27Speaker 5: has to be perfect because the defense can't back him up.
- 30:29Speaker 5: It's one thing when you go into a game where
- 30:31Speaker 5: you feel like, all right, I don't have to be
- 30:33Speaker 5: perfect every drive. I can lean on my defense. He
- 30:35Speaker 5: can give me the ball back. That puts so much
- 30:37Speaker 5: pressure on the offense to stay ahead on the scoreboard
- 30:42Speaker 5: because your defense, you know for a fact, is going
- 30:44Speaker 5: to let up a score on the other end. And
- 30:47Speaker 5: what you're seeing right now from a run game standpoint,
- 30:52Speaker 5: they're not running the ball as efficient as they should be.
- 30:55Speaker 5: And they've kind of, they look like they took a
- 30:57Speaker 5: step back compared to what they did against the Texans.
- 30:59Speaker 7: And, you know, CD has, you know, CD had.
- 31:02Speaker 5: A great game against the Texans where I sat here
- 31:05Speaker 5: and was like, man, we need to start looking at
- 31:06Speaker 5: this dude for MVP.
- 31:07Speaker 7: He goes through his situation. He gets missed on a
- 31:10Speaker 7: downfield throw by Dak.
- 31:12Speaker 5: You know, Pickens, as much as you love or however
- 31:14Speaker 5: you feel about him, he's just an enigma. It's tough
- 31:18Speaker 5: to kind of, wrap your arms around a hell of
- 31:21Speaker 5: an athlete big time receiver big play big play making
- 31:23Speaker 5: ability but at times you can't find them on tape
- 31:26Speaker 5: because of effort so i think what you're talking about
- 31:29Speaker 5: the offense offensively why you're just talking about inconsistencies there's
- 31:32Speaker 5: times where they look like the greatest thing to ever
- 31:34Speaker 5: happen and there's times where they just they're just kind
- 31:36Speaker 5: of benign and stagnant so and and overall man it's
- 31:41Speaker 5: a it's a lot of ball left but you can't
- 31:45Speaker 5: You've got to find a way to kind of dig,
- 31:47Speaker 5: and I think that was the most disheartening thing.
- 31:50Speaker 7: Yes, I understand being tired.
- 31:52Speaker 5: Me and Max have played in short weeks where you
- 31:54Speaker 5: have a dogfight on Sunday and you're trying to recoup
- 31:57Speaker 5: and get your body together. You've got to play Thursday
- 31:59Speaker 5: nights a lot. But, man, there has to be some
- 32:02Speaker 5: type of pride. The Bucs were 0-4. There's multiple times
- 32:05Speaker 5: where they try to give you the game, and the
- 32:08Speaker 5: Cowboys just couldn't capitalize it. It definitely says more about
- 32:13Speaker 5: the Cowboys than the Bucs.
- 32:14Speaker 2: You know, Max, when you look at that NFC East now, too,
- 32:18Speaker 2: and I think that there were a lot of people
- 32:21Speaker 2: because of the John Harbaugh hire who were bullish on
- 32:24Speaker 2: the Giants.
- 32:25Speaker 3: You know, we went through this last year.
- 32:26Speaker 2: Which team did we think, you know, going into the
- 32:30Speaker 2: offseason with the draft picks you had and the cap
- 32:34Speaker 2: space that you had and the team you already had
- 32:36Speaker 2: in place, who was going to be the team that
- 32:39Speaker 2: kind of took that step forward? My team that I
- 32:43Speaker 2: was adamant about Willie, just, you know, flying in the
- 32:46Speaker 2: face of what most people were saying. But the team
- 32:49Speaker 2: that I picked was the Tennessee Titans. So, not looking
- 32:54Speaker 2: too good at 0-4 right now. Shows what I know.
- 32:57Speaker 2: A lot of people said the New York Giants and
- 33:01Speaker 2: John Harbaugh. And you look up now at this stage,
- 33:03Speaker 2: I mean, there's a lot of reason to think Washington
- 33:06Speaker 2: would bounce back with Jalen Daniels. And, you know, there's
- 33:09Speaker 2: no real reason to think that– The Eagles wouldn't remain good.
- 33:14Speaker 2: And the Cowboys always have that great offense. You look
- 33:18Speaker 2: up now, the Giants are 3-1, Max. They're in first
- 33:22Speaker 2: place in the NFC East. Is it their division right now?
- 33:25Speaker 2: Are they the pick to win that division?
- 33:29Speaker 4: I think you have to say it right now because
- 33:31Speaker 4: you look at what the Philadelphia Eagles are and their
- 33:33Speaker 4: trades and the sudden retirement of Lane Johnson and the
- 33:37Speaker 4: struggles that Jalen Hurts has had. And then you look
- 33:40Speaker 4: at the commanders like, you know, you just kind of
- 33:42Speaker 4: laid out, right, Jaden Daniels. And you're not sure if
- 33:44Speaker 4: he's even really the leader of that squad, like how
- 33:47Speaker 4: the team feels about him. And then we've talked ad nauseum.
- 33:53Speaker 6: Cowboys are still cowboying, so to speak.
- 33:56Speaker 4: I mean, I hate to say that phrase because I
- 33:57Speaker 4: feel like I curse myself when I say it. But
- 34:00Speaker 4: that's just kind of the state of where this is.
- 34:03Speaker 4: And the Giants and Harbaugh and company, have figured out
- 34:07Speaker 4: their recipe for right now. They are a hard-nosed run
- 34:10Speaker 4: team that uses.
- 34:11Speaker 6: The play action.
- 34:12Speaker 4: They have guys on the outside that they can make
- 34:14Speaker 4: big plays to, but it's ball possession, bully-style ball.
- 34:19Speaker 6: That they're playing.
- 34:20Speaker 4: And right now, until otherwise noted, just like we had
- 34:23Speaker 4: to put the Cleveland Browns in this situation, they're the
- 34:25Speaker 4: tops of their division until otherwise noted, until the other
- 34:28Speaker 4: teams figure themselves out because there's inconsistency because teams are
- 34:32Speaker 4: trying to probably be more than what they are as
- 34:34Speaker 4: opposed to taking– you know, the current status of where
- 34:37Speaker 4: it is because sometimes you just got to go slug
- 34:38Speaker 4: it out. And New York's a team that does not
- 34:41Speaker 4: fret at slugging things out. So, you know, when you
- 34:45Speaker 4: have that physical nature, sometimes you can bully your way
- 34:48Speaker 4: into victories and until it's otherwise seen, you can start
- 34:51Speaker 4: to believe it because it's going to give you confidence
- 34:52Speaker 4: the more you do it.
- 34:56Speaker 7: Yeah, I agree.
- 34:57Speaker 5: I think right now it's interesting because I think like
- 35:01Speaker 5: a lot of these games that are starting to come up.
- 35:03Speaker 7: Like our game coming up, Steelers versus Colts, as.
- 35:07Speaker 5: Much as we want to sit here and think, you know,
- 35:10Speaker 5: it's going to be an air and out game considering
- 35:12Speaker 5: that the Colts secondary is bad and we seem to
- 35:15Speaker 5: have the edge from the receiver.
- 35:16Speaker 7: Standpoint, man. We've said all week, man, it comes down
- 35:19Speaker 7: to running the ball, right?
- 35:20Speaker 5: This Steelers team coming up Saturday at 1 o'clock, we
- 35:24Speaker 5: got to establish some dominance up front with our run game.
- 35:27Speaker 5: And so you would like to see that trend continue
- 35:30Speaker 5: moving forward.
- 35:31Speaker 7: Give the ball to Jalen Warren. Let Samara to pass
- 35:33Speaker 7: off it, and let's get this thing moving in the
- 35:35Speaker 7: right direction.
- 35:37Speaker 2: I really hope that, you know, for Jaden Daniels' sake
- 35:41Speaker 2: and for Washington. Remember they had RG3, and he got
- 35:45Speaker 2: hurt and had injury issues and was never the same
- 35:47Speaker 2: after that rookie year. I hope for the commander's sake
- 35:50Speaker 2: that that's not the way Jaden Daniels is going to go. And,
- 35:53Speaker 2: you know, hurt last year and nicked up again this year.
- 35:56Speaker 2: And after that great week, we saw him a couple
- 35:58Speaker 2: of years ago in D.C., and he was just dynamic. But, again,
- 36:05Speaker 2: if you're the Giants, what was the expression again? Nobody
- 36:09Speaker 2: cares that you're hurt?
- 36:11Speaker 7: Nobody cares that you're hurt. They're just happy you got them.
- 36:13Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:13Speaker 6: Yeah, exactly.
- 36:15Speaker 7: That's right.
- 36:16Speaker 2: So, interesting stuff in the NFC East for sure. We're
- 36:19Speaker 2: going to be looking forward to our upset prediction of
- 36:22Speaker 2: the week, our big-time matchups for the game, our keys
- 36:25Speaker 2: of the game on offense and defense.
- 36:27Speaker 3: Guys, you know what?
- 36:28Speaker 2: Let's save the Colts-Steelers talk. And let's come back next
- 36:33Speaker 2: week with our predictions and our.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Upset of the week.
- 36:36Speaker 6: You mean next segment, right?
- 36:38Speaker 7: Next segment.
- 36:38Speaker 3: What did I say?
- 36:39Speaker 6: Next weekend.
- 36:41Speaker 3: Sorry, next segment.
- 36:44Speaker 6: I was like, wait a second. We don't air on
- 36:47Speaker 6: the weekends, and next weekend.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Max took that gator helmet off. He's ready to go, man.
- 36:51Speaker 2: That's right.
- 36:52Speaker 6: The Florida education is catching it right now, baby.
- 36:55Speaker 3: All right. Okay, stick around.
- 36:56Speaker 2: That's what we're going to do next when we continue
- 36:58Speaker 2: in the locker room here on the Steelers Audio Network.
- 37:04Speaker 1: This is In the Locker Room with Rob King, Max Starks,
- 37:08Speaker 1: and Willie Colon on Steelers Nation Radio, brought to you
- 37:12Speaker 1: in part by the Steelers Pro Shop. Get it direct
- 37:15Speaker 1: from the team at the Steelers Pro Shop at shop.steelers.com.
- 37:19Speaker 7: And by your.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Neighborhood Ford store, the F-150 is the official truck of
- 37:24Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 37:27Speaker 3: And welcome back inside the locker room.
- 37:29Speaker 2: Wanted to remind you, Missy Matthews coming up in a
- 37:31Speaker 2: little bit, and we are going to We are going
- 37:33Speaker 2: to get into the key matchups of this game between
- 37:36Speaker 2: the Colts and the Steelers.
- 37:37Speaker 3: We'll ask Missy what this house.
- 37:39Speaker 2: Cleaning that Mike McCarthy's talked about, what the guys are
- 37:41Speaker 2: expecting to see as well this weekend. We will all
- 37:44Speaker 2: weigh in with our opinions on that and the big-time
- 37:46Speaker 2: matchups of the game. But we are now going to
- 37:49Speaker 2: take a look at our upset pick of the week
- 37:53Speaker 2: and some weekend predictions. I'm going to go ahead and
- 37:57Speaker 2: say it's too late for me to pick Tampa Bay
- 37:59Speaker 2: over the Cowboys since that already happened. So that will
- 38:04Speaker 2: not be my upset.
- 38:05Speaker 6: So clairvoyant of you, Rob.
- 38:09Speaker 3: I was thinking.
- 38:10Speaker 7: No, I wasn't.
- 38:11Speaker 2: This is all brought to you by your neighborhood Ford store.
- 38:14Speaker 2: The F-150 is the official truck of the Pittsburgh Steelers. So, Willie,
- 38:20Speaker 2: do you have a game where you are eyeing an upset?
- 38:27Speaker 3: Ooh.
- 38:29Speaker 7: See, I'm struggling.
- 38:31Speaker 5: Raiders.
- 38:31Speaker 7: Raiders.
- 38:32Speaker 6: Raiders!
- 38:33Speaker 7: That's where I'm going.
- 38:34Speaker 3: I know it.
- 38:35Speaker 7: That's where I'm going.
- 38:36Speaker 6: I know.
- 38:38Speaker 7: It. I want to believe.
- 38:39Speaker 5: A lot of people, I think the Patriots are favoring
- 38:41Speaker 5: going into this game, but the Raiders, I'm just a believer.
- 38:44Speaker 5: And I've talked to Nazem about how much I'm a
- 38:46Speaker 5: believer of Clint Kubiak and.
- 38:47Speaker 7: Everything he's been able to do.
- 38:49Speaker 5: As much as I'm happy with Kirk Cousins' decision-making and
- 38:53Speaker 5: him looking like he's turning back the clock with his play,
- 38:57Speaker 5: the defense is really– something I'm surprised about because, you know, listen,
- 39:03Speaker 5: we know Kurt can play. We know Clint Cooley is
- 39:05Speaker 5: a hell of a coach. We know what Ashton Gentry
- 39:07Speaker 5: and Brock Bowers and all those.
- 39:08Speaker 7: Guys can do.
- 39:09Speaker 5: And their office in line is playing a lot better.
- 39:12Speaker 5: But defensively, man, led by Max Crosby and Coots and
- 39:15Speaker 5: Hezekiah Massey, the young stud who's actually popping off the
- 39:18Speaker 5: tape and making big plays. Collectively, this is a defensive
- 39:21Speaker 5: unit that really a lot of people didn't have high
- 39:24Speaker 5: hopes for. uh but since they had the emergence of
- 39:28Speaker 5: nicole b dean and some more veteran pieces man this
- 39:31Speaker 5: defense looks legit it looked legit so now we got
- 39:34Speaker 5: to see uh this defense control i think they i
- 39:37Speaker 5: think they're at home i think they go to new
- 39:38Speaker 5: england right am i right with that yes they're in
- 39:40Speaker 5: new england rob yeah yeah so they got to see
- 39:42Speaker 5: if this defense can travel now um Max talked about
- 39:46Speaker 5: covering the game against the Pats and Bills. Pats started
- 39:49Speaker 5: off slow, but they were able to rally and beat
- 39:50Speaker 5: Josh Allen and Bills. So I'm a believer that the
- 39:55Speaker 5: Raiders took a lot from that loss to the Chiefs. Nevertheless,
- 40:00Speaker 5: they went pound for pound with a really good outfit,
- 40:03Speaker 5: and they can't see the Chiefs. So I think they're
- 40:04Speaker 5: going to say, you know what, we don't stack more victories.
- 40:07Speaker 5: We're going to actually go get us one, and they're
- 40:08Speaker 5: going to beat the New England Patriots.
- 40:10Speaker 3: Three and a half points. That's a pretty– It's tight.
- 40:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's lower than you would have– would have thought,
- 40:16Speaker 2: by the way, I'll just run through some teams that
- 40:20Speaker 2: I think are, that it's interesting that they are underdogs.
- 40:25Speaker 2: I think that it is interesting that the, the 49ers
- 40:32Speaker 2: at four and O are an underdog. I understand why
- 40:35Speaker 2: I get it. They're on the road at Seattle, the
- 40:37Speaker 2: defending champs, three point underdog. I think that's interesting. I
- 40:40Speaker 2: think on Monday night football, the three and one bills.
- 40:43Speaker 2: And I, again, on the road, They're three-point underdogs to
- 40:46Speaker 2: the Rams. So there's a couple of top teams who
- 40:49Speaker 2: are underdogs this week. Not going to be my selections. But, Max,
- 40:55Speaker 2: do you have your underdog selection for the week?
- 40:58Speaker 4: My underdog selection is I'm going to go Saints over Vikings.
- 41:05Speaker 7: Okay. Saints over Vikings.
- 41:08Speaker 3: All right.
- 41:10Speaker 7: Okay. Okay.
- 41:13Speaker 4: I mean– Yeah, I mean, because I feel like it's
- 41:15Speaker 4: a rock fight with the Vikings. They're not showing anything
- 41:18Speaker 4: that lets me believe that that 4-0 is a real number.
- 41:24Speaker 4: And I think, you know, for the Saints, you know,
- 41:27Speaker 4: Tyler Shuck is still, you know, figuring himself out, but
- 41:31Speaker 4: he's doing a good job along the way. And then
- 41:34Speaker 4: Chris Olave, you know, Chris Olave is, you know, got
- 41:37Speaker 4: almost 500 yards receiving. So I think they have some pieces,
- 41:41Speaker 4: and I think if there's any game to be an
- 41:44Speaker 4: upset is to take this team lightly if you're the
- 41:50Speaker 4: Minnesota Vikings.
- 41:52Speaker 3: That's interesting.
- 41:54Speaker 2: It's interesting, and you're a 4-0 Vikings team, and you're
- 42:00Speaker 2: only a 2.5-point favorite against a 1-3 team, which I
- 42:03Speaker 2: think says something about the Saints because they've scrapped.
- 42:07Speaker 3: They've scrapped, and they've been in there.
- 42:08Speaker 2: The other game, you know, Willie, that– by the way,
- 42:12Speaker 2: did you grow up a Giants or Jets guy in
- 42:14Speaker 2: New York?
- 42:15Speaker 7: I grew up a Giants fan, diehard Lawrence Taylor fan.
- 42:21Speaker 5: You know this, Rob, because, I mean, you're from New York,
- 42:23Speaker 5: but you're up top where the mountains are. We– it's
- 42:28Speaker 5: broken up by boroughs, you know, so usually if you're
- 42:31Speaker 5: from the Bronx or Harlem, you're a Giants fan. If
- 42:36Speaker 5: you're from Queens or Brooklyn, sometimes you're a Jets fan.
- 42:41Speaker 5: Brooklyn is a Giants as well. So, Queens, Staten Island
- 42:45Speaker 5: are definitely Jets fans. So, me being from the Bronx,
- 42:48Speaker 5: I grew up a diehard Giants fan. Loved Lawrence Taylor,
- 42:51Speaker 5: Leonard Marshall, that whole defense. Carl Banks, Pepper Johnson. So,
- 42:56Speaker 5: that whole squad, big Bavaro fan.
- 42:59Speaker 7: Loved him as well.
- 43:00Speaker 3: Oh, great player.
- 43:01Speaker 7: Hostella Sims, all that. Rodney Hampton. You can go on
- 43:04Speaker 7: and on. Yep.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Well, that was my team growing up, too, by the way.
- 43:07Speaker 2: I think I saw every game Lawrence Taylor played.
- 43:10Speaker 3: Oh, wow. Harry Carson.
- 43:13Speaker 7: Harry Carson, yeah.
- 43:14Speaker 3: Yeah, John Mendenhall. I go back a little further.
- 43:17Speaker 2: John Mendenhall along that defensive line was a heck of
- 43:19Speaker 2: a player. It was a real defensive in those years,
- 43:25Speaker 2: a real defensive, low-scoring type of division. You had the
- 43:31Speaker 2: Hogs with Washington. They were going to play a certain way.
- 43:33Speaker 2: The Giants had that great defense. You know, Philadelphia had
- 43:37Speaker 2: some talent, but everybody in that defense was hard-hitting. That
- 43:40Speaker 2: was a good– if you like defense, that was a
- 43:42Speaker 2: good division.
- 43:43Speaker 7: To root for.
- 43:44Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. I just wanted to know.
- 43:46Speaker 2: And it brought me– I ask that because I'm– we
- 43:51Speaker 2: have just– we just got finished talking about the NFC East,
- 43:54Speaker 2: and I didn't realize this because.
- 43:55Speaker 3: They weren't my pick.
- 43:57Speaker 2: The Washington Commanders are four-and-a-half-point favorites over the Giants, who
- 44:04Speaker 2: are three-and-one.
- 44:04Speaker 7: Wow.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Four and a half point favorites.
- 44:07Speaker 7: What?
- 44:07Speaker 3: Very, very.
- 44:08Speaker 7: They don't believe in the James Winston experience.
- 44:11Speaker 3: Very tempted to pick the Giants.
- 44:13Speaker 6: They really don't.
- 44:14Speaker 3: But they weren't my pick because I didn't realize that.
- 44:16Speaker 2: I didn't see that. So my pick's already in. And
- 44:20Speaker 2: I don't want to go with that. No, you know what?
- 44:24Speaker 2: I'm changing my pick. Oh, you're going to take it now.
- 44:27Speaker 6: You know why?
- 44:28Speaker 2: Because my pick was the Browns. I think the Browns
- 44:31Speaker 2: are going to beat the Jets. And the Jets are.
- 44:34Speaker 2: Two and a half point favorites. I think the Browns
- 44:35Speaker 2: are going to win the game.
- 44:36Speaker 6: I really do.
- 44:38Speaker 3: But I don't want to pick the Browns. All right.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Justin Miller's giving me the side eye. Justin, do I
- 44:43Speaker 2: go with my original? Do I go with my original?
- 44:46Speaker 2: Do I go with the Browns over the Jets? I'm
- 44:48Speaker 2: getting the head nod. I hate to do it, but
- 44:50Speaker 2: I'm going to pick the Browns over the Jets.
- 44:53Speaker 5: Oh.
- 44:53Speaker 2: I'm going to pick the Browns over the Jets. I
- 44:55Speaker 2: just don't think that– I'm not– I just– I think
- 44:59Speaker 2: the Browns are pretty good, and I don't think the
- 45:01Speaker 2: Jets are.
- 45:02Speaker 3: What's that?
- 45:02Speaker 7: It's supposed to be rainy in MetLife. It's supposed to
- 45:04Speaker 7: be rainy and cold.
- 45:06Speaker 5: I mean, it's brown weather, so what am I saying?
- 45:10Speaker 2: Well, the other thing is, I mean, that's a reason
- 45:12Speaker 2: to like the Giants in D.C. That game might be 3-0,
- 45:16Speaker 2: you know, with the weather conditions you have there.
- 45:19Speaker 3: But I'm going.
- 45:21Speaker 2: To pick the Browns. So you got them duly noted, Justin.
- 45:26Speaker 2: I got the Browns. Willie, who's your pick again? I'm
- 45:30Speaker 2: going with the Raiders.
- 45:32Speaker 3: The Raiders.
- 45:33Speaker 7: Las Vegas.
- 45:34Speaker 3: And, Max, you got the Saints.
- 45:36Speaker 6: I got the Saints.
- 45:38Speaker 3: I have to say something else, too, before we go
- 45:40Speaker 3: to the break, guys.
- 45:42Speaker 2: You know, when I look at the Colts on paper,
- 45:44Speaker 2: I'm like, eh, you know, they don't really– I mean,
- 45:47Speaker 2: I like Jonathan Taylor, obviously. I like DeForest Buckner. I
- 45:52Speaker 2: don't get that excited. So, Willie, over the course of
- 45:55Speaker 2: the week, I will– parse out because my main job
- 45:58Speaker 2: obviously the one I got to be good at hopefully
- 46:01Speaker 2: hopefully is Sunday right calling the game so I try
- 46:04Speaker 2: to watch the watch a game or two I'll watch
- 46:06Speaker 2: the preseason games especially early because then that's where you
- 46:10Speaker 2: see all the guys are going to be on special
- 46:11Speaker 2: teams play more right and that then I build my
- 46:14Speaker 2: way up through the week trying to watch a game
- 46:16Speaker 2: and then as we get later I'll probably watch two
- 46:18Speaker 2: games a week but there's not that much inventory right
- 46:20Speaker 2: now so I've only watched the first three Colts games
- 46:22Speaker 2: now I watched part of the last week game but
- 46:25Speaker 2: I've already flushed it from my memory. The Colts, who
- 46:30Speaker 2: on paper I'm like, eh, they should have beat the Chiefs.
- 46:34Speaker 2: They should have won that game. And they should have
- 46:36Speaker 2: pounded Houston if it wasn't for the Daniel Jones turnovers,
- 46:40Speaker 2: and I know that's part of his game. I'm beginning
- 46:42Speaker 2: to think this Colts team might be a little bit
- 46:46Speaker 2: better than I was thinking at the beginning of the week.
- 46:49Speaker 3: Offensively, yeah.
- 46:51Speaker 7: Defensively, no. And I forgot the insider we had on.
- 46:55Speaker 7: Matt Taylor.
- 46:56Speaker 3: Yeah, the play-by-play guy.
- 46:57Speaker 7: Yeah, Matt Taylor. Credit him. He was amazing.
- 46:59Speaker 5: He was really insightful and did a hell of a job. Nevertheless, man,
- 47:02Speaker 5: the secondaries is really poor.
- 47:04Speaker 7: For the Colts.
- 47:06Speaker 5: You know, Sauce Gardner's had a really bad outing last Sunday.
- 47:09Speaker 5: I think we highlighted that. Their linebacker core is made
- 47:12Speaker 5: at best. Their defensive line, which is going to be
- 47:15Speaker 5: a big test for our offensive line, considering what our
- 47:17Speaker 5: offensive line put.
- 47:18Speaker 7: On tape last week. And that's where the game's going
- 47:20Speaker 7: to be won, Rob. I agree. To be honest with you, Max.
- 47:23Speaker 5: The skills are going to be the skills, and Aaron's
- 47:25Speaker 5: going to be Aaron's. But if our offensive line comes
- 47:28Speaker 5: to play, then we should be fine. But if they don't,
- 47:32Speaker 5: it could be a long, rough day for our offensive line.
- 47:35Speaker 5: So if there was one matchup to watch once again,
- 47:38Speaker 5: it's definitely the Steelers' offensive line against DeForest Bruckner and
- 47:42Speaker 5: their defensive line.
- 47:43Speaker 3: Totally agree. I like Grover Stewart. I think he's a
- 47:45Speaker 3: good player.
- 47:46Speaker 2: And they've got a lot of edge guys, and they
